Champions League Spot For Winners?

Champions League Spot For Winners?

Spurs manager Martin Jol has agreed that the winners of the UEFA Cup should get a shot at qualifying for the Champions League.

UEFA are currently considering changing how teams qualify for the tournament.

New UEFA President Platini has already suggested cutting down the English clubs in the competition from four to three.

Other suggestions which are more likely to be more welcome, would be the move to give one spot to the winners of the FA Cup and also give the winners of the UEFA Cup a chance to qualify for the Champions League.

When asked about a Champions League spot for the winners of the UEFA Cup Jol told Sky Sports News: 'It would be a good idea, there are big teams and it's a big competition'

And who would argue! It would boost the importance of the UEFA Cup and make the competition stronger than it currently is, but the move to give the FA Cup is an even better idea.

The FA Cup is the best competition in the world and if it had a Champions League spot up for grabs it really would spice up the competition!

Here's an extraordinary idea. How about only the CHAMPIONS qualify for the CHAMPIONS league?

How on Earth will UEFA make any money out of an idea like that! ;)

Money. But the rational is good. It means the UEFA Cup is taken far more seriously. As are the domestic places need to qualify for the competition including the various cups – win the Carling Cup and then the UEFA and you’re in the CL. Also it means that in the group stages of the CL, teams will consider 3rd place to have more merit, so there will be fewer dead games. I reckon this might come about because with a quick glance of the European Leagues 6 of the G14 (18 clubs) won’t get into the CL next season if it stays the same. Dortmund, Marseilles, and PSG haven’t been in the CL for ages and this is another possible route for them.

Dortmund, Marseilles, and PSG haven’t been in the CL for ages cos they have not been the best teams in the respective countries (PSG are going down this season). Leeds and forest will never get CL again but that doesnt mean we have to start finding ways to make it easier for them to get it. actually kernowboy im not even sure i understand what you mean lol. Just leave it the way it is.

The G14 are the "biggest" clubs in Europe acting together as a body to force UEFA to try and protect their interests, hence why kernowboy suggests that they are trying to think of ways to get the G14 to qualify.

i think (and i realise this wont ever happen) that we should have top 2 places in league champions league then 3-5 place uefa cup and the fa cup and league cup into cup winners cup....this would make 3 very good european trophies with none of them being devalued right now all we have is one competition which is where the money is and a secondary competition, that in many parts of europe isnt respected

Chances of it happening are zero, but its not a bad Idea. Afterall dont loosers from chapions league come into the UEFA cup, well why not the winner going into C/L would seem fair enough, and like someone said would make the UEFA cup "more competative" cup (having said that the UEFA cup this season has produced far better games than c/l)

The Champions League is going to look a right mess, with the FA Cup winners and UEFA Cup winners all getting a place in a competition that was meant for league winners.... but the way I see it, if a team is a "champion" of a competition, then maybe the "Champions League" is the right competition for the team. Let's face it, the Champions League is no longer a competition for league champions, so let's make it a tournament for champions of respective competitions.

What I also mean is in the final stage of group fixtures, it will increase the incentive of the 4th place team to get to 3rd in the group and go into the UEFA Cup as here will be another route back into the UEFA Cup. I makes the UEFA Cup a more attractive option and might stop teams fielding weakened teams once they have lost the chance of being in the top2

i think top 3 from leagues go through with the cup winners too. uefa winners should get a place too. and defending holders of cl. however with the possibility of 6 teams from one nation qualifiying i doubt it would happen. money is the object here.
