A few good men...

With slightly less than two weeks remaining of the summer transfer window, the positions of several of our current players are still looking far from secure.

As much as there is constant speculation of one of two big name and bigger money signings and departures, such as Bentley and Jenas, while talk of Sissoko and Young still regularly feature on the back pages, talk of some less heralded names seems to have slipped down the ladder of importance.

One of the first clues to the futures of a couple of Spurs men will perhaps be clearer tomorrow, as Ledley King will almost certainly be missing at Hull, leaving Vedran Corluka to move inside and the need for a replacement right back needed. Who Harry picks will potentially leave one and maybe two players in no doubt that their time is up at White Hart Lane, as Alan Hutton and Pascal Chimbonda battle the young pretender Kyle Naughton for the full back up role.

The favourite for the role seems to be Hutton, but should Harry go for the Sheffield man, you can be certain that both Hutton and Chimbonda will be heading for the exit as soon as a sensible offer comes in. The injuries to Dawson and Woodgate may yet be a reason why they remain at the club in the short term, but I would expect at least one to be allowed to leave as soon as possible, the selection at Hull will just rubber stamp Harry`s intentions.

As the future of Dorian Dervite will continue to be an issue until he signs a new deal or is sold and sadly I see the latter as being the only solution as the signing of Bassong has pushed the young Frenchman a place further down the pecking order and he is our sixth choice at best and for his own development, I honestly can`t see him signing a deal and can we honestly blame him for wanting to move? Once the fitness of Daws and/or woody is clearer, so will the future of Dervite.

Sadly for Gareth Bale, his knee injury has halted his ability to impress the coaching staff or get a loan move to further his development. The fact the club haven`t bought cover for Benoit Assou-Ekotto, surely means they are happy with Gareth as cover or see others as adequate back up should BAE suffer injury or to fill in when he potentially heads for the African Cup of Nations in January. With Sebastien Bassong also likely to be away, we are not exactly flush with options, leaving a right footer to fit in or move Jamie O`Hara back to a defensive role. Should no other left back come in, It wouldn`t seem unreasonable that Harry is happy with Bale as back up and he remains part of his plans, but I think it will be a close run thing and may again be down to no positive interest from other clubs.

With the "Ghetto kid" growing up and becoming respectable, there is potential for Boateng to have a future at Spurs, but as things stand I honestly can`t see where this future lies. If we assume that Hudd and O`Hara stay, along with Palacios and Modric, even if we do sell Jermaine, it will almost certainly bring in another midfielder and not give an opportunity for The Prince to show his worth. With emerging talent in the form of Bostock, Livermore and Parrett, all potential Spurs stars of the future. The likelihood that Boateng will be anything more than an occasional bench player seems remote and he will again be seeking regular football.

For many the most frustrating player on our fringe, will be Giovani Dos Santos. The new king of Mexican football, following his outstanding performances in the summers CONCACAF Gold Cup and his countries first away win against the USA in ten years. As much as this has raised his profile, it may have actually hindered his progress at Spurs. With no pre-season, although 100% fit, Gio will be a stranger to many of his team mates and therefore I can only see a peripheral role unless he takes a rare chance or others leave and Harry takes a chance.

With four top quality strikers to keep happy and others like Bentley and Danny Rose pushing for playing time, I really don`t see too many opportunities for Gio to impress and I almost feel an embarrassed silence from the club as they seem happy to ignore his achievements for Mexico, whilst shouting lesser success by other squad players from the rooftops. It is as if the club are trying to forget he exists.

Going by Harry`s history of selecting and building teams around small and skillful players, such as Modric, Joe Cole and Eyal Berkovic, the idea that Gio isn`t a Harry player seems unlikely. So whether there are deeper rooted issues or there is simply no room at the club for another flair player I don`t know, but the silence is deafening for me..

Should Spurs look to bring in more new faces, some of these players could be needed as sales to balance the books as well as the squad and as disappointing it would be for some to leave, it looks likely that the majority are on their way at some stage in the near future, if not for Tottenham's sake, but for the players themselves...

Chimbonda (no need)and Dervite (not good enough) can go, no-one is going to buy an injured Bale so he is here til Jan when we will probably need him. KPB should be given some game time, maybe off the bench in games like Hull away. GDS should be on the field whenever and whereever there is the chance that we cannot win or lose.
TeddyLyon
As always your articles is a good read. Ox do you not sleep? I think Gareth Bale will be given time and really do think that everyone at Tottenham is stumped as to what to do with Gio. A lot will depend on whether he is prepared to keep biding his time. He is still very young despite his acheivements. Hutton on Wednesday for me, BUT if he is not first choice he is an expensive backup. Dervitte will have to go and what to do with the prince??
KiwiSpur
Just had another though after reading your comment Teddy. Will Harry be brave enough to play the likes of Gio, Prince and others in the CC games?
KiwiSpur
oxspur, always a good read but don't you sleep
cyprus yid
Kiwi, yes I think he will, we have Doncaster in CC round 2 and that will be the perfect place to start. You could start that with say Pav and GDS playing as a second forward and bring on Defoe or Keane in his place if needed. In addition to playing time they need to be played in their correct positions. If we are 2-0 up at home with 15 minutes to go against Wolves bring them on. If we are 3-0 down at Old Trafford same thing bring them on. There are 6 spots on the subs bench plus the keeper, 3 for experienced players and 3 for the "young uns." Against Liverpool we had two RB's on the bench why can't one of those spots go to GDS?
TeddyLyon
I have no idea where Gio fits in and to be honest, I missed the CONCACAF Gold Cup. However, it really is an extremely weak field for that tournament, other than the USA and Mexico. USA may just have had an off day - it happens. So while Gio and Vela seem to have done exceedingly well, I think we should note that the stats may be flattering to an extent. I was excited about Gio's arrival, but I'm a bit lost as to his place in the squad to be honest, as he certainly ain't a midfielder for a 442 system and I don't see him making it into the 1st team as a striker, although I think he could do a job as a 2nd striker if needed. I'm guessing a loan to a club where he'll play more often is most likely for now - perhaps back to the Tractor Boys. As for the RB berth, it's clear we're waiting for bids. I think Harry would sell either Hutton or Chimbo for a good offer tbh and I'm ok with that, although I'd MUCH rather see Hutton stay of the 2 ideally.
wayne king
After villa's poor start don't be surprised if they come looking for someone here.
weststandenclosure
Over these next 2 weeks I want to see 3 or 4 of the players move on so we can buy a Pallacios MkII type player. That for me should be our priority. Chimbo is probably favourite with a decent reputation and his affordability. I'll be keeping an eye on the bench again on Weds as it was clear that with our 4 key injuries (Woodgate, Dawson, Jenas and Bale) there were players like Chimbo, Boateng, Gio, Rose, Dervite, Bostock etc who are still not in the first 22. Some will be loaned out as they're not established yet. Others though like Boateng, Gio and Chimbonda now have to be favourites to move on. I wouldn't be surprised if there is still a fringe player like Bentley who may move on as well. Any way you look at it a squad of 28 with only 2 keepers is too big to have tight knit squad when you only have league and domestic cups to worry about.
muttley
For me, the only real investment in playing staff we need to make is in a player that can opporate as a left winger and central attacking midfielder. Unfortunately these types of players dont come cheap, especially the caliber of player we will need if we want to improve on Jenas. There are a few out there; Arda Turan and Rafael Van Der Vaart for example. It would mean then that the players that Ox has mentioned above could well play a massive part in our season, in the sense that it could take at least 2 or 3 of those to fund this sort of aquisition. I still have reasonably high hopes for the likes of Bale, Bentley, Hutton and Gio but if it would mean losing 2 of those so that we could bring in a player that would improve us as a team and offer an extra dimension, I couldnt really complain. Saying that, maybe a stop gap type player like Martin Petrov or Kieron Richardson would provide an extra option from the bench and not cost anywhere near the likes of VDV. Obviously these types of player lack the quality of the all action Dutchman, but what it does do is allow us to hold on to our potential world beaters. At least until 2010.
KierzoSBC
i think van der vaart is class so is sneider and if u want a left try harder for robben
Hackspur
Against weaker teams we should play with the midfield of Lennon on the right, Modric behind the two strikers and Gio on the left with Palacios being the glue holding it all together and allowing them to do what they all do best...Terrorise defences! COYS
OnlyOneAaronLennon
Have been reading posts on here for some time now as a guest and have decided to add my two pence worth ! Lifelong Spurs fan, get to about 10/12 games a year due to work commitments. Firstly I have concluded that over the last 10 years Levy has basically not been that concerned about the title. Happy with a top 6/7 finish, buy up and coming players cheap and sell 'em on at a profit. Embellish this with a cup or two and everyone's sort of happy. This philiosophy is at long last looking to change with the development of a solid squad and cover at all positions. For example we now have a combative holding midfielder (Palacios) in the Viera, Makele mould that all serious sides need. My view is that we should not expect too much more transfer activity and then only in January when Levy/Harry assess where we have got to by then. The squad has the ability to perform and perform well, what is needed is that performance on a consistent basis. To achieve this, in my opinion what is needed will be three signings of serious but proven quality. The three positions have been clearly identified and the 3 I would go for are Robben, Gudjonsen (sp?) and Jap Staam. As for the sell before you buy policy well frankly there comes the time when Harry will have to say to levy "Whaere do you want me to get this side" If Levy wants to go all the way he is going to have to bite the bullet, sign the cheque and balance the books 6-12 months later. If we assume the imbalance on transfers is say £10m then frankly if we can't stand that for 6 months we shouldnt be bothering.
Fredspur
Gio isnt really that effective on the left OOAL, he's more suited to coming in off the right. However, Lennon could operate on the left in these lesser games you're talking about, although i'm sure how effective that would be. If GDS stays, it's vital that he get's some playing time, but for me, we cant take the chance on starting him against anyone because, in The Prem, 20th can beat 1st and every game is worth 3 points so I would be more comfortable introducing him with the result more or less confirmed. At first anyway, then if he plays well, a place in the odd starting line up could be a possibility.
KierzoSBC
KSBC I seemed to have thought he played left but to be fair I have only ever seen highlights of him or the cup game against UTD that I can remember. He needs a few chances like you say with the result confirmed, playing alongside our full strength team not with our reserve side like the UTD game.
OnlyOneAaronLennon
Fredspur, Jaap Stam???? you sure about that. Think he is well past sell by date
Lasse
so what is gio's best position kierzo i ask because i can never figure it out and i didnt see much of his recent mexico games
jljyid
Gio's best position depends on what you want. I guess you could say the same about Lennon too. If you put them on the opposite side of their preferred foot, they will probably score more, but then again probably assist fewer. But Gio has a better shot than lennon, so many will say his best side is left cause his shot is so dangerous. Don't know what to say really, I guess his best position is striker :) And with Keane unable to be subbed, Defoe our first choice, Harry's love for Crouch and Pav's desperate try to get in the starting 11, I will give you 3% chance that Gio will be involved at all this season :(
NorwaYid
thanks norwaYid. i hope he does get some game time but i hear he has real attitude probs thats why barca let him go, if he brought them with him i suspect thats the reason he wont get any matches rather than his ability or competition from other players
jljyid
fredspur welcome to the debate and great read apart from jaap stam (6-8 years ago) and which gudjonsson are we talking about. but yes if we are happy just going for europa then we are fine but if we want to challange for the league and lets face why else are any club playing if its not to win then a MAJOR investment is needed on 3-4 truely world class players we should have never let arshavin get away when we already had pav, the same with huntelaar. there are some world class player surplus at real madrid and we should be trying to buy them and not stop when the price gets to 16.5m which seems to be our limit. get robben and vdv in sell jenas and bently and the defecit in money wouldn,t be that great and with the likes of hutton and prince and lets face it gio cos he isn,t ever going to get a chance we will with wages saved and sells probably be no different but levy hasn,t got those ambitions so it aint going to happen never mind we will just have to keep dreaming wont we COYS.
norwichspur
Aye, I'd agree with norwayyid re GDS. He's similar to lennon in that he has pace and can go past a player and it's his work in the final third that lets him down. However, one plus with GDS is that he has an awesome strike on him. This is why he is best suited to playing on the right, or in the hole behind a striker or 2. I'm sure if needed he could do some kind of job out on the left but he aint a great crosser and is far to direct to hold the ball up if isolated out there. It's quite frustrating as we have a player who SHOULD be a nailed on starter for the left wing but unfortunately due to certain aspects of the way he plays the game (and maybe a few things off things off the pitch) would prove ineffective in most cases.
KierzoSBC
Gio should not be sold or let out on loan, he is a class player... fair enough if he was playing poorly but he's playing class, player of the CGC....every time he got the ball something happened... he must get at least one chance at spurs...it was a good article but WOODGATE to be sold???what the hell is that about...
kikihotspur
People saying "let's get van der Vaart... let's get Robben... let's get Sneijder...", without your Spurs heads on, please tell me why they would even consider coming to us at this stage?
Othello
Woodgate to be sold? I think I missed that!! I did nt really say that surely...
KierzoSBC
Woodgate to be sold? You don't work for the Daily Mail by any chance, Kikihotspur? lol
Othello
Crap. My comment should have read "It didnt really say that that" not "I did nt really say that". But then you all knew that anyway!! :P
KierzoSBC
othello not saying they would but lets show the balls and try and if we stump up the asking ammount maybe these players will see we are serious in our ambitions and say yes but if we dont try then they def wont come all it takes is a phone call from levy a deep breath and some balls. if he isn,t prepared to take us forward then maybe its time to sell us on to someone who would and before all the but look what levy has done for us lovers on here, tell me truthly are you really happy to be fighting for 5-10 then if you are your as bad as he is dont tell me your not looking at man city at the moment and thinking if only that was us cos i know i want more and so do the rest of you.
norwichspur
World Cup in June Othello!!
KierzoSBC
Norwichspur... remember Glenn Hoddle coming out and saying we placed a bid for Rivaldo, only to be turned down with a letter of thanks? The board showed balls then, and got turned down. The board we have are a little more realistic. That in no way doesn't mean they are not prepared to take us forward. There is a slight difference in going for unrealistic targets and having no ambition. On the final point you make, ask anyone on here and I'm sure they will tell you that I am in no way jealous of Man City's newfound wealth. We're doing things the proper way and we are not that far behind. If there wasn't too much knee-jerking from the fans and ultimately Levy, we would have achieved the holy grail of the top four under Martin Jol by now. But that's by the by. We have to start again. And going for targets that will not even consider us or for players that will only join us if we're willing to bankrupt ourselves to feed their pockets is not the way I like to see Spurs going "forward". If we have the stability, we will get the rewards. I'm happy that Harry kept the nucleus of the side the same, whilst everyone (and you all know who you are!) was all for "sell 12 players, bring in 15... sign all these World Cup winners because we are Spurs and everyone will want to play for us!! If they don't come, sack Harry Redknapp and get lost Levy!!". I knew that wouldn't work, as I'm sure most in the know didn't either. I would like success, but not at the expense of our future.
Othello
"We should have never let Arshavin get away.....same with Huntelaar" FFS give me strength!! Please please please will people stop saying that ***** - they didn't want to come to us!!
LizardSpur
Hear bloody hear, Othello. Amen to that.
LizardSpur
othello i,m as you can see not asking for wholesale changes and a new team every transfer window just a LITTLE bit more commitment and balls from the board. arshavin deal wouldn,t have bankrupted us nor would robben and vdv we must raise our wage structure to do this if we want to compete and yes i know that means others will want pay rises but if we aren,t prepared to do this then we are conceding that we aren,t prepared to do anything better than 5-10
norwichspur
i think he's a really good player who can make something out of nothing. he is fast, clever, skillful and has a good shot. i think you can use him on the left at the end of games when their defence is tired and he will terrorise them and he can then grab a goal and kill the game off which we have had problems doing in the past.
arraza the yid
No disrespect to Hull, of course. They're a good team with committed fans.
Othello
We were in for Arshavin, but Zenit didn't want to agree a price with us. A fee was sorted each time, but Zenit kept moving the goalposts each time, and Levy became miffed with it and called off negotiations. He only left for Arsenal as they put in one offer, Arshavin was *****ed off with Zenit and pretty much forced the move through. If we had gone in as late as Arsenal did instead of trying to do the deal early, he may be with us now. None of that was Levy's fault. As for raising the wage structure, who pays for that? Unless you wanna pay something like £80 for a cheap seat to watch us play someone like Hull, then it's never going to happen.
Othello
lizard huntelaar never said he didn,t want to come we didn,t either bid or bid enough for him arshavin was bit different cos zenit kept moving the posts or so the papers said and also as usual we wanted to put down a £10 deposit and then £5 a week thereafter. i know no buisnessman wants to lose money that would be stupid so maybe levy and the board aren,t quite big enough buissnessmen for us to challenge.
norwichspur
Which clubs, apart from Man City and Real Madrid, have £22million that they can just hand over these days?
Othello
I think it's unfair to say we cant get top players and I dont think we need to raise the wage bill. Now i'm just speculating here, but if we sold Bentley and Bale, wouldnt that give us enough cash to buy Van Der Vaart AND afford his wages? He would make us a much stronger team, defensively and going forward. Obviously it's easier said than done but I wouldnt just write it off.
KierzoSBC
as i said othello arshavin was different and i haven,t checked but are chelsea or united or city charging £80 to see hull. i,m just saying that levy and the board have taken us as far they are prepared to go and its not going to be enough for the next step is it.
norwichspur
I'm so proud of this team. Harry is developing them. I want to see Gio develop into a class player, and a 1st choice backup to Modric on the left or behind the striker. Our defense is shaping up with Bassong. maybe we could use a L1/L2 young English CB to mentor off of King and Woody? I hope to see more goals from corner kicks. However, I think one area we need to approve is goals from free kicks. The BAE goal was great. there is no doubt but can he produce that again, and again, and again? Modric is getting better with his kicks with time and Hudd is coming into his own, even if it might be a little slower. I just feel we could use more goals coming from a free kick specialist. COYS!!!!!!!!!!!!
WDC_Yiddo
PS. ..All this this talk about Arshavin and Hutnelaar is DEAD. I would of loved to have seen them come. I would have been the first to fly from USA to congrats levy, but THEY DIDN'T COME TO US. END OF STORY. CAN WE PLEASE LET SLEEPING DOGS LIE?
WDC_Yiddo
Makes sense Othello - stability does appear to be growing at the club and it may be due to a policy of not embracing the horror of enormous changes to the squad - as in past seasons. Sensible additions this time round appear to be working and that's from January onwards and includes Sargent Wilson, Defoe, Keano etc. I also think that a number of players that some of us were looking at in January as maybe not cutting the mustard (Thudd for instance) now look a lot more likley to reach a consistant higher standard. All in all it must go down to HR an CO doing a fine job - long and gloriously may it continue.
andyspur4life
Norwichspur, two of those teams you mentioned can easily subsidise themselves, while the other has a worldwide fanbase and is subsidised by that, a 76,000 seater stadium as well as Champions League money. Hence, ticket prices are low for all three.
Othello
kierzo yes we could do that but it would mean his wages would be higher than anyone elses, i dont know what he is on but i bet its more than our top earners
norwichspur
I think GDS will come good, not sure when he will get a chance but i think he will play CC games, hopefully with Bostock!! I also really like Bentley and Jenas they are quality players who woul get in all the teams except the top 4 and possibly Man Rich. Also found out that you can watch Premiership games on your PC through Sky Player and if you have Multiroom you can get it for free. What a result!! Thought I would spread the word.
JonnyArdiles
AS4L, it's how the Sky Sports' Favourite 4 do things. Since we first finished 5th, we were only 2 or three additions away from pushing on. But each season we changed numerous players, meaning that they needed time to bed in, meaning that we had an awful start each time. Now even though it's only one game played, we're seeing what familiarity is doing with the team. We would have been much further on in our development if we hadn't have had a revolving door policy for so long. Also, Ramos' complete team change last season was just absolutely stupid. He didn't need to make 5 or 6 changes to the team as he did.
Othello
hey everyone! just registered, always had a soft spot for tottenham but only really started following them after that little magician modric signed (i was born in croatia but i live in sydney) but now i think i have caught this bug that you all seem to have.i find myself nervous and excited as hell waiting for games to come, taking days off work or coming late and needing 3 red bulls just to stay awake coz i stayed up all night watching spurs.i'm hooked and there ain't no turning back.anyway enough of that just wanna add my 2 cents and say that gio must stay, the kid is class and it would be foolish to let him go.i have read a few posts on getting in sneijder or van der vaart and i totally agree.my pick would be sneijder as he is a master at set pieces and we don't seem to have one.plus i think we need someone to play with modric, just watch luka go when he finally has someone to pass to.it's like when luka plays for croatia and kranjcar isn't there we really seem to struggle. i'll be happy with either sneijder or van der vaart and ill even toss up another name in misimovic the wolfsburg playmaker who lead the bundesliga in assists last season.could cost a bit more though.
dwight schrute
Regarding Gio....I am his biggest fan (I guess?), and I would want him on the teamsheet. But, he does not fit in Harry's plan. We are still looking for more steel in the midfiels, and we have 4 very good strikers, which leaves him way out of a place in the team. Maybe a swap with Lpool would be good? Babel for Gio? Lpool certainly would have good use for him, either as a second striker or a LW. Haha, funny...our "rejects" is good enough for Lpool :) So long good old days where we bought all of their downhill players like John Scales :)
NorwaYid
otello i,m not really dissagreeing with what you are saying but our fan base isn,t to shabby and size of stadium will go up. and i know the whole thing is a catch 22 situation, but are you saying lets just stick with an also ran team. a lot of this is still down to the board i,m thinking they are just enjoying the profits they make every year but not worried about trying to be the best ,that will take a different board.
norwichspur
I haven't seen anything of this team which suggests it's an alsoran team. It just lacked guidance. The same team which got 2 points from the first 8 games went in to become the 5th best club in the remaining 30. We have the players, it was just a case of utilising them in the right way, which Harry has done. A lot of the players we have cost somewhere in the £13-£17million bracket, so you can't say that the board have no ambition. Levy has stumped up the cash when we have needed it. If Harry wants a player, I'm sure Levy would do what he can to get them, as he has in the past.
Othello
lets be honest we aren't going to win the league (this season) but we are building stability because you CANNOT build anything on dodgy foundations all this build from the back and left sided issues are all true but the club as a whole not just the first 11 needs to be stable and if that means we have to settle for top six for a season or two then so be it because i believe the rewards will be reaped in the longer term and the rewards when gained this way will be longer lived
jljyid
othello 5th best but dont you want to be 1st, the team is getting better and yes levy has paid out a lot and with better management in the past maybe that money would have been better invested but it wasn,t. do YOU think this team will win the league if not what do we need to do to win it. i would like nothing more than this current bunch of lads do it.
norwichspur
This team won't win the league, that's true. To do that, we would need a better class of striker than Crouch or Keane (my opinion, KSBC. ;-) ), another hard centre midfielder and another playmaker along with another left back. All that, plus consistency. We're not going to get all these ex-Real Madrid stars and what-not because they will simply not come to us. So we have to build slowly and give time for the team to grow. Arsenal got to the top in this way, so unless we are going to be taken over by an Arab/American/Chinese megalomaniac, it's the way we're going to have to build success. As said, we would have been nearer to challenging for the top three places if there wasn't so much knee-jerking and if Ramos and his "Sevilla blueprint" philosophy had not come anywhere near N17.
Othello
so it comes down to a take that song (patience) or we need a bloody rich billionair with very deep pockets.
norwichspur
Pretty much. Or you can try the "get success quick" scheme and pray that you sustain it. I'm sure Leeds will tell you what the flip side of that can be.
Othello
In my opinion, Chimbonda, Dervitte and Jenas can all leave. The money we get should be put towards Sissoko. We have very talented players that can cover for any major injuries. Gio, Rose, Bostock, Naughton, O'Hara... all of these players should be able to fill in if required. Giovanni especially.... if Modric gets injured then we should make sure that he is able to take his place on the left.
Kermad
still think vdv is achievable though
norwichspur
this is why i posted my earlier statement i dont want a leeds scenario so couldnt agree with you more othello.
jljyid
Exactly, Jljyid. I can never understand it when some people say "Levy, break the wage structure!" as if we have infinite amounts of money. Or maybe some people just don't think about these things at all when they speak. Norwichspur, if van der Vaart is willing to come to us for reasonable wages, and forego Europe for one season in a World Cup year, then I will welcome him as well.
Othello
as i stated the other day i have wanted vdv before he went to madrid when jol was incharge (i think) but im not willing to risk a lot more to bring in a player who is class but still wouldnt win us the league and could destabalise what arry is trying to create by having a bigger wage than the rest of the squad and thus causing unrest and dissention amongst the other players because lets face it even mediocre footballers (chimbonda cough cough) have huge egos and believe they deserve the same and thats when the back stabbing and winging starts. we all know from the berba scenario what damage this sort of thing even from 1 player can do to a teams confidance and unity
jljyid
As much as I would love a Robben, VDV or Sneidjer player for the team I still believe we need to add another midfield enforcer first. Any period without Pallacios will just be back to the usual suspects and this will undermine the good foundational work Harry has done. Just think how the Liverpool match could have worked out without Pallacios in there doing what only he can do out of our midfielders.
muttley
That is a realy good point muttley who would you suggest? i havent seen this sissoko but he sounds realy good but so did zokora and i have a suspicion he's probably the same sort of player (dont get me wrong i did like zokora but this is about moving forwards) the only one i have seen that i feel would cover for palacios and possibly add a bit in his own way to the team is cattermole. i know that isnt going to be a popular choice but any one who disagrees needs to take a long hard look at that boy and then if you still think i am wrong have some basis for telling me so
jljyid
it took us an eternity to find palacios where are we going to find another one that somebody is willing to let go and we are back to having to pay big money for them which is what we have been debating on today. we got lucky with palacios as he was proven in prem i cant think of anyone like that is about now so probably have to be somebody from abroad. but agree we need another like him.
norwichspur
cattermole has moved hasn,t he but i thought he looked a good shout and didn,t he play with palacios
norwichspur
i,ve been on vital hull today its a bit quiet on there nobody wants to play
norwichspur
Jenas, Bentley, Dervitte and Chimbonda out... Sissoko in and a left midfielder. I still think there's one more surprise up Harry's sleeve, I doubt that left midfielder will be Young, Robben or Cole but you never know. Players like Robben, VDV & Sneijder are all waiting for CL teams to come and buy them, until those teams officially make their moves nothing will be happening and i fear that any moves for those guys will be last minute. Unfortunately we are way down the pecking order but after the good start that we had on Sunday and a solid team performance, that may help our cause with potential targets. One thing's for sure is that we have an interesting 2 weeks before the end of the window and I've no doubt that Harry's dealings aren't done yet.
Doctor Yid
Cattermole's gone back up to the north east and signed for Spurnderland.
Doctor Yid
yes he did paly with palacios but i think that was in the games against man u etc when they felt they needed to keep the other team from playing i dont think it was a all season partnership. and i didnt know he had actually moved the last i heard was that bruce was offering around 10mil but nothing had been agreed. i am surprised vital hull is quiet with the prospect of negrado being at the game
jljyid
to be fair its gone a bit quiet on here now how about a hull thread ox
norwichspur
If we fail in our bid for Sissoko i think the Scott Brown deal might rear it's head again. If none of those transfers go through I can't see Jenas leaving.
Doctor Yid
meant to say play
jljyid
doctor yid your probably right, i know i,ve been on here all day moaning but i do expect at least one more signing before end of window and who knows if we keep up good form maybe one of the players you mentioned we be tempted
norwichspur
We can live in hope NorwichSpur but i just can't see teams like ManUre, Chavs, bindippers, L'Arse and Citeh, plus all the other big CL teams in Europe not going in for players like VDV, Sniejder and Robben. Especially noting that Real need to sell them, the transfer fees will be relatively cheap in terms of value for money. Yes their wage demands might be high but all those teams mentioned can accomodate those wages and offer champions league football, we can't offer either. So in summary we'd be looking at left wingers more of the ilk of Petrov and Richardson, not Robben and Cole.
Doctor Yid
a good replacement for palacios is hard to find.brown is ok but how about jermaine jones from schalke? he is strong, fast, can tackle and i don't think he would have any trouble fitting in in the EPL.also he just switched allegiances from germany to the U.S
dwight schrute
i see harry is saying that jenas and bently aren,t for sale
norwichspur
i think that he wants these two to stay is a good thing jenas for cover in the mid and surely bentley hasnt lost all his ability hopefull arry who has a good track record of getting the best out of players can make him play again like he was at bburn
jljyid
True Norwichspur, but what do you expect him to say if asked. No manager would come out and say any of there players were for sale, that would just reduce their ability to negotiate a good fee if they admitted they wanted to sell them... smoke and mirrors my friend. Unless Harry has secured the services of another centre midfielder Jenas will not be sold. As for Bentley i'm not too sure whether he'll still be here on 1st Sept, i think he's in the last chance saloon bar without his car keys!
Doctor Yid
Hi, new poster but been watching for a long time! Carrick back at the lane anyone?
whitey0372
whitey one player we should never have sold although i was one of those who didn,t appreciate how good he was untill he had gone. and now gone forever i,m afraid
norwichspur
i see its still quiet on vital hull maybe thats cos negredo is about to sign for zaragoza according to ssn ,have they signed anyone yet cos they have had a lot of knockbacks (shame)
norwichspur
An observation: Would the person/people who thought Pav was our best player on Sunday (poll on right) put their hand up and explain how?
whitey0372
Sympathy vote? or just for a giggle I guess! I'm surprised that Bassong nor King got many of the votes, I thought there was nothing to choose between them two, Palacios and Corluka. All were fantastic. Bassong for me though, got the winner, defended very solidly, a perfect perfect perfect debut for a centre back! I'm interested to see how well he plays as a CB leader. He's still young. Against Hull, we'll have Corluka aged 23 and Bassong aged 23. I hope that this lack of experience doesn't cost us. Bassong seems ahead of his years and Corluka at least looks 30 so hopefully they won't be exploited :)
bernio3000
Tongue-in-cheek voting, Whitey. Probably just to keep Keane at the bottom of the list. lol Doctor Yid, I think during the early part of the summer, Harry intimated he may be interested in selling Bentley. He never made such intimations about Jenas. Looking forward to both staying, especially to those with ill feeling towards Jenas. Although I've been critical of Bentley, I would like to see him given a chance if possible
Othello
i thought Corluka was awsome, and that is something i doubted i would ever say. He looked calm and gave great service to Lennon (shame the same cant be said of him!). Dont ask me why but i think there may be some mileage in the rumours starting that 'Arry has tentatively asked about the availability of Carrick following an alleged bust up with old blue nose. Nothing to back it up... just a hunch.
whitey0372
Well whitey obviously that would be a sensational return, and would improve our team no end! I would sacrifice any of our midfielders to get Carrick back, in my opinion he's better than Hargreaves, better than Barry, he is the hybrid of Huddlestone and Jenas we've been looking for since.........well....Carrick, but I can't see there being any truth in this, probably the bog roll journalists making mountains out of molehills. Stranger things have happened though. Ferguson has had a tendancy to sell once he falls out with a player (Beckham, van Nistelrooy), but I think that any rumours involving us are because we've had a habit of buying players back recently.
bernio3000
You will see in time that i am not one of these supporters that thinks we have a divine right to buy anyone we want and that every player wants to play for us. And i also believe that a player of Carricks calibre should be showing that talent in the Champions League. However, that all being said... 'Arry is a crafty ole bugger and if you said to me that Keane, Defoe and Chimbo would return i would have said you were mad! Carrick to return?... we will see
whitey0372
You know that ***** player we had... Darren Bent? That really crap player? Well, he's so ***** that he's just scored his second in two games against Chelsea... so glad we got rid of him, eh! Anyway, I digress...
Othello
For the love of God, I hate these 'told ya so' style comments. Yes he's scored 2 in 2 games, but when's he going to hit a dry spell? People seem to forget he went patches last season, quite long patches without scoring, and when he's not scoring he's doing **** all else. If we'd lost on Sunday then I could begin to appreciate simple minded comments about how we shouldn't have sold Bent, wah wah wah, lets just get on with it, we're a better side without him. Sunderland are happy because he'll get goals, we're happy because we got our money back, lets leave it there.
bernio3000
I agree Bernio, for too long in too many games he was a passenger. When he is hot, he's hot, when he is not, you are playing a man light as he contributes nothing else. At least when Keane or Defoe have a baron patch they are evident on the pitch and suplpying others. Good luck to him, a good move on Bents part and we get back to 11 players each week. Both clubs get exactly what they want. Let him have his honeymoon period. There is no doubt the guy knows where the back of the net is. In my opinion he just did not fit our style.
whitey0372
Better late than never but in answer to question above, I'm not really sure about where we find Pallacios MkII. Saying that Pallacios had a good reputation with the Wigan fans but I'm not sure our fans raved about him like we do now. Inevitably there are other players out there like that and I wouldn't mind betting Harry has a shortlist. Also, as we have Pallacios we can look for a younger player who still has runway to develop but shows the similar attributes. I think that is why Livermore got given an opportunity in pre-season as Harry was looking for that potential for him to be the muscle in midfield. I also think that is why we had our scouts looking at Capoue and Sissoko with the former being the most linked. Finally, Scott Brown doesn't look the best football player but certainly gives the best of what he has for 90 mins. I also wouldn't mind betting Harry is monitoring his ex players Diarra and Muntari as he knows with the talent that RM and Inter have there's always hope.
muttley
Bent is full of confidence and something to prove, that's natural after his unwanted spell at the lane. However, when he misses a chance or two and Sunderland loses becuase of it then his confidence will be knocked and it is then that he will struggle I'm sure and then Sunderland will see that he will contribute little else while not scoring. New challenge, something to prove alwatys brings the best out of players.
loz
As for Gio I really want to know what Harry plans to do with him and I would like to see him on the pitch before I make my mind up.
loz
Bernio3000, simple minded or not, throw whatever adjectives you want at me, it's still the truth.
Othello
Cattermole would have been perfect. Think we look set for the season with this squad. With a couple out or sold. Maybe if we get good offers for the likes of Hutton,Chimbo,JJ,Bentley,Gio, then i believe we may get the cheque book out again.
No1Yido
We will see about Darren Bent, I think he is nailed on to score more PL goals than either Keane, or Pavyluchenco, or Crouch, but we will wait and see, perhaps Sandra Rednapp will be playing by Xmas.
Frank
She should have been playing on Sunday... we could have won the game 5-1 instead!
Othello
Not even read all the comments yet but still - No point chasing players who have stated or intimated they only want to play for CL team's. On the one side it makes us look a bit silly and basically other players will think if he does not want to go there, why the hell should I? It just puts a natural downside on the club and if nothing else will just be detrimental when pursuing real and reaslistic targets. Also if we waste time chasing these players we have no hopes of signing, we might miss out on a player who is realistic and would have proven to be an excellent signing. If we were wasting time chasing say Diarra last Xmas when Madrid bought him, we might have missed out on Palacios for example. Also in terms of offers we can probably compete with most clubs for most players, which means we can talk to pretty much any club in the world for just about any player. But it is not as easy as that, you need to negotiate to perhaps get the club interested in selling, then need to get a price, etc, etc, etc. All clubs always say transfers are not as easy as they seem. Think of it in terms of when you bought your house, perhaps not as easy and quick as you thought - And in that situation its not as if you have to consider the house's sentiment on the matter, which in transfer terms, the players sentiment is one of the most important and crucial parts of striking the deal - like Harry said today about Bent and Crouch and their protracted moves. So lets say we agree a deal with Madrid for Robben or VDV etc after weeks of negotiating and they turn around (which effectively have done) and say not interested. Better to know this from the start and not waste man hour's and resources pursuing what is unavailable to us at the present time.
El Jefe
As for Bent, as already said elsewhere expect him to score quite a few up there, but the fact is he did not fit into our system or style of play. He was not a Spurs kind of striker. Neither really was Ferdinand and he was prolific elsewhere. We need a certain breed of striker, like Sheringham, Klinsmann, Berbatov. None of them were particuarly considered athletes or pacy etc, but they still scored loads of goals and created loads aswell. Its not easy being a striker at Spurs, scoring goals is not always considered enough - as has been proved with the likes of Ferdinand, Bent, etc.
El Jefe
You need to offer more than just goal-scoring if you want to be a success with our club. At the end of the day, thats all Ferdinand, Bent etc were and it sounds silly, but it is true. The other 3 were just as clinical in front of goal but they still offered much more than just this.
El Jefe
Even Robbie Keane, although at the moment clearly not flavour of the month for many.
El Jefe
As for Gio, he is no winger, be it left or right. His ideal position is in the final 1/3 off the front man. Anywhere that potentially entails him having to get stuck in or get back and defend is completely pointless. Problem is we have 4 quality strikers and Modric would be ahead of him for that role anyway. Best thing is to loan him out and get more game time and experience. If we want him back long term, loan to Prem side only, if we want to make money on him, loan to Spain ideally or if we sell him, insist on a serious sell on fee like 50%. Perfect club for him and who actually want him, is Deportivo (not just because they are my club in Spain). He will get 1st team guaranteed and they play a similar formation to Liverpool, which means he would get to play in his proper and appropriate position. Also as Guardado (quality LW) is also there and these are probably Mexico's 2 best at the moment it will mean easier to settle in. If he develops as he should, we can either bring him back to play for us if we want or make a lot of money on him.
El Jefe
Probably not to Deportivo as we are in serious debt, but by show-casing his skills in Spain guaranteed to get very rich suitors. So all in all, both teams would be happy.
El Jefe
I'm not sure what truth you mean Othello? That Darren Bent scores goals? Well feck me, really? Didn't know that! He's going to score goals wherever he goes. That doesn't go to say that we made the wrong decision in selling him. Who could we play him with? Answer me that. He looked s**t with us no matter who he played with. His runs aren't intellegent, he doesn't particularly hold the ball up well, not good in the air and he missed a lot of chances. He scores goals, but how many of them did he make for himself? What are the odds that Bent could pull something out of the hat when the chips are down. Fact is he DID NOT fit our style of play one bit. Another fact is, he's adored by Sunderland fans right now, he is their superstar. Its a honeymoon period. Are we missing him Othello? Because personally I think we're going to shatter the (haha) staggering 45 goals we got last year. Like I said, I could understand if it was a knee jerk reaction to a loss on Sunday, but we won fella, won and dominated and our strikers did fairly well.
bernio3000
Oh and he scored yesterday when the adrenaline was still pumping and the crowd was singing loud. Where was he when Chelsea put pressure on? I didn't notice him at all second half. Didnt notice him come back and get stuck in, didnt notice him gearing up for a counter attack, chasing the ball, nothing.
bernio3000
Well said Berno. Bent was a decent player for us but he would never be anything more, he wasnt suited to our style of play and although had a decent scoring record, it didnt warrent his lack of involvement in other areas of the pitch. This fella will never be anything more than a good goalscorer for a mediocre club.
KierzoSBC
Loan Gio out to another english team. Put a clause in to allow us to recall him & it is happy days.
