Did Harry want Prince stay?

Reading comments from Harry Redknapp about Kevin Prince Boateng, make me wonder if the player was sold on orders from the top and not at the whim of our manager.

After speaking of The Prince in glowing terms in the summer, Spurs moved the player to Pompey not only at a small loss on the purchase price, but also with Jamie O`Hara heading south, seemingly as a bribe to take the German. Hardly the deal of the century for Spurs and one that looks more and more likely to be one to bite us on the backside.

Harry gives an insight to his dealings with KPB, a mixture of less than glowing references and a get rid order from Mr Levy seem to have ended Kevin`s Spurs career and suddenly propel him towards legend status at his new club, as harry says: 'when I came in Boateng was injured, I think he'd had problems and they'd loaned him out.

'I was only listening to what other people were telling me about his character, the way he was behaving off the field, and it wasn't painting a very good picture to be honest.

'But when I looked at him play I thought 'this kid can really play'.

'To be honest, I wasn't keen to sell him. I think it was a good offer and the chairman obviously felt that maybe he needed to move on for his career.'

The situation that our Chairman was so desperate to get rid of a player, may have justification and we clearly don`t know all the facts, so I don`t want to take a cheap shot at Levy, as Boateng does appear to carry more baggage than the average player, but I would like to think that this is a one off and in future, the man employed to run the team will make decisions on who stays and goes or we could have problems down the line.

I may have got the wrong impression of Daniel Levy, but I am guessing he, like anyone in his position, is one to bare a grudge towards those who mess him around. However if that is the case, KPB must have really upset the top men at WHL as they seemed happy to forgive and forget with the likes of Keane, Defoe and Chimbonda, but were happy to get rid of Boateng whatever the cost. A case of getting rid of a problem or sell in haste and repent at our leisure???

harry tells the supporters generally what they want to hear, he prides himself on taking troublesome talented players in and sorting them out. so i would suggest that he didnt fancy him, but knows he isnt a bad player, it deflects any blame for getting rid. a bargain im not sure, but the lad does look half decent altho he had to in our midfield
Super Bock 1898
I guess Harry would want KPB to stay, as long as KPB were ready to play second/third fiddle of our midfield options. He may become good, but I don't think he is in the same catgory of talent as Taarabt and Gio. So, good decision from both club and player. I wish him the best of luck, always liked him.
NorwaySpurs
I have no reason to doubt Harry was undermined by Levy and to be honest I am not suprised I just hope Levy does not push Gio or Adel out the door to balance the books.
cockeril
Boateng might be doing ok at pompey but lets face it - he is not a top quality player & not the quality of player that will take us to the next level. Brilliant bit of business getting rid of him. Every player has a good spurt of form when they join a new club because the fire is re-ignited in their belly (a la bent - another player who is far from top quality and not worthy of playing in our team.) Give it another 10 games when the pace really sets in and then it will be there to see both KPB & Bent are far from where they need to be to have been good enough to play for spurs.
TornadoYid
Chimbonda? What did he do wrong? Or Defoe come to think of it? Some of you lot have some rather odd ideas that players are or should be obliged to sign contracts they don't want to by the sounds of things! Chimbo moved on without so much as a squeak out of place while he was at Spurs! And Defoe was a model employee! He wasn't playing regular football so he didn't want to sign a new deal, so what! I agree with Superbock anyway, Harry always seems to feed us whatever we want to hear - triffic player here, triffic player there, triffic player every bloody where! Wouldn't pay it too much heed tbh. If Harry had really valued the player so highly he'd have made sure he stayed and perhaps loaned him out rather than selling. And personally I'm not so sure O'Hara will come back either, especially if we eventually buy one of these CM players we're perpetually linked with (eg. Sandro, Muntari, whoever really). He wants to play for a living not sit on the bench and I think that's fair enough really.
wayne king
big fish now in a little pond. Regular football always improves players and KPB is no different. Would he play week in week out for us so we could see that improvement? NO. Will he at Pompey? YES. simples. Fringe players always look like 'the one that got away' purely by dropping down in class (no offence) and getting regular football.
whitey0372
he's a slightly above average mid fielder playing in a below average midfield (making him look even better than he is) who scored one goal against us, christ keep it in context. if we kept him where would he fit in ? If we try and keep all the MD players that we go on about being "the man" or "maybe really good in time to come" we would have a team of nothing but MD's (JJ, Modric, Niko, Hud, Gio, Wilson, O'Hara, Lennon etc) and we apparently keep looking at more each day according to the media. KPB was (if all is to believed) a young average player with an aattitude and loads of baggage we could do well to be shot of.
spurkent
Yes, the Sandro rumour appearing again today. Really think there is something in that one, as we have signed a first option buy deal with his club. Just hope it is not a new Lucas Leiva:) Big chance to take though...14m for someone who still plays in south america....
NorwaySpurs
He looks really good. But I suppose he would considering the ability of the other footballers who play for portsmouth. Good Goal though against spurs All the best in the future KPB :)
spurs4evaa
not to worry fellow yids, he will be bought back for double the price within 12 months ;)
123spurs
Whats all the fuss about KPB all of a sudden. he has had a decent game or two for the team who are bottom of the league, big deal. He was 3rd,4th,5th choice in CMF for us, and given the choice between him and Kranjcar I know who I would have, all day.
Frank
As many people have said, he is just a run-of-the-mill midfield player , he is no Modric, no Sgt. Wilson, no Hudd or a JJ. He had to move to get first team football. In my opinion we have better than him and he would not be playing in the side at present if he had still been with the club. Also, in the current poll on "Has your opinion changed on KPB" at present 53% think the club were right to sell him. I think most people agree he is not good enough.
Ox Yid
Well we only forgave Keano & Defoe after they left a returned! January Swoop for KPB on the cards? Lol I doubt it this time but!
stu_u2k
we have a decent sized squad at the moment and "balancing the books" as some have said with derision is actually quite important (ask Leeds/pompey/Newcastle) so to turn it around - who do the ~49% who think we should have kept him wish we'd sold instead?
Joshtottenham
Comon now in reality if he Harry really wanted to keep him do u guys honestly think we would have sold him??? Ill decifer harrys words for u. "the little cocky snotnose boy has been mouthing off far too long here bout getting a spot on the team He may have some ball skills but his brain is full of German sausage. So we sent him to Portsmouth were he could attempt to take on the world with Pinky and the Brain"
Mix26
KPB like Bent is not a spurs type player................you would expect him to play well against his old team. Lets make sure we keep things tight against Bent, so as not to allow him another streaky goal against us!!
WestStandEnclosure
Mix, I am sure if harry really wanted him to stay he would have fought his corner, but I believe that he perhaps chose to believe the info several people allegedly gave him and prior to his arrival at the club, KPB was deemed as trouble and a definite for the exit. I think Harry went with that over his belief in the players ability.
oxfordspur
Agreed ox. I think if the player was more humble he would have been given a shout from the manager. In todays game u must be paitent to get a chance. Its one thing to think u are the best(mentally strong and all that) but this is a team sport and no individual should be bigger than the team. Look at Messi, the guy is as cool as a cucumber...
Mix26
no doubt Bent will get a lucky goal (leave the beachballs at home) against us but it will be one to our three. it will be a tap in or a pen and he'll go mad cos he's a twit(ter). as for KPB. BOTHERED! The End!
Jabberyid
The Prince, Taarabt, O'Hara, Davids, Mendes, Zokora, Davids, etc etc.. All of these players were shown the door by our Fantasy football Chairmen Daniel Levy. Harry himself called Taarabt a 'Genuis' so why would he send him away? The Prince was never given a chance at Spurs nor has Dos Santos. When Bent was sold in the summer he said "there is a lot of politics going on at Tottenham" and he was right! The biggest question of all has to be... How in the world has Jenas Survived for so long? Why has Modric not been given a chance to play in his natural position in the centre since he arrived? JJ is the answer! Tainio, Davids, Hudd, Prince, Dos Santos and Taarabt were all played out of position to accommodate the most overrated play maker I have ever seen in a Tottenham shirt! The truth is that JJ is Levy's boy. He plays because levy demands it! Sure Harry, unlike Jol, Santini and Ramos has been allowed to buy a few of his own players, but it is 'Mr Fantasy Football' Daniel Levy who is really running the show!!!
geoff stern
I think we got the better of the deal letting KPB go to pompey, even at a deficit, as Krancjar was a pawltry amount coming to us. Krancjar looks the better team player and creator to fit our system. In the Prem it is all about the team NOT individual flair. Taarabt, GDS etc I like alot but you have to be able to play in a team ethic to get results. It does mean defending when we haven't got the ball from the front. It does mean NOT giving it away cheaply when we have it. I believe we are seeing this now hence our results from 2009 have been good. Top 6 form.
COYS R US
We're third in the league, so we must be doing something right. Its almost inevitable that there will be mistakes in the transfer market, but I haven't so far seen anything from KPB or Taarabt to suggest they come into that category. There is a limit to the number of players you can have on the books, partly financial, partly morale as the more players you have the less some of them are going to play. The books have to be balanced or we end up doing a Leeds United, thats Levy's job not Harrys.
jod
Geoff i agree with what you are saying but maybe you are exaggerating a little. I also think Levy calls the shot sand always did along with his slime ball DC. Levy is a top business man but a very cold business man and would do his own grandmother for a buck. I still don`t buy this I love Spurs thing with him. There are a lot worse chairman out there don`t get me wrong but Levy is not the saint most paint him to be. He would sell the club in a flash if the right offer came along and I have always felt that Enic and Levy only bought Spurs to sell on and make money but then again most chairman do and even some of these sugar daddies. I cannot complain too much like I said there are lot worse out there.
cockeril
The one thing Levy does not play is Fantasy Football. He knows you have to balance books and there is a limit in how many fringe players you can keep around the place without a hope of getting a game. Harry, of course, would like a squad of 50 players but even he knows we have to live in the real world. Anyway KPB was pants every time he played for us; the only thing he kicked was the opposition
Forever Spurs
One thing I would say about KPB at least he attracted the attention of a PL club, hence his move to Pompey. As good as some of you seem think that Taarabt is, he has so far apparently not attracted serious interest, or a bid, from a PL club, I wonder why. It is a long way from scoring goals at QPR to holding one's own in the PL.
Frank
I guess it's not just the manager decision to seel, or in fact the chairman I guess it's down to manager, chairman and PLAYER. I guess KPB had a say as well because he wanted first team football.
loz
Geoff show me a sport without politics??? Truth is those politics are about having the right attitude!!! All the players u mentioned we have heard stories about partying, drinking, moaning about not playing etc? I dont give a monkeys about Bents comments! He was not good enough!!! Look at DB, he was bought by levy but the wrong attitude with Harry gets u a seat on the bench. Pav anyone? They have sent out a stern msg. U want to play for Spurs? SHOW ME!
Mix26
I feel so sorry for you small-minded Tottenham fans. I want to watch the Team I love play in the Champions League every season! To do this You have to have a deep squad. The 2 top teams in the country Man Utd and Chelsea have very deep squads! Every season we watch our two main London rivals Arse and Chelsea play the top teams in Europe! Every season we struggle to make it into the little EUFA Cup or whatever it is now called? Last season are tiny minded Fantasy football chairmen instructed Harry to exit the Eufa Cup. Yes the team that defeated our reserves went on to win the cup. I want the Club sold and that disgusting Red gambling logo Mansion removed from the holly white shirt. What kind of role model are you Levy! Get your bosses at Enic to sale up and bring in the money we now need to build that new stadium and team. I want big time Tottenham! If the Chelsea scum can do it, so can the Yids!!!
geoff stern
Franks got it spot on as usual, hes playing well at the moment..but he had his chance and didnt take it. Hes really trying to impress at the moment and hes a decent player, so he stands out a million miles in a crap pompy team. But fact is Jenas would too.
