'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Spurs embrace a new partner. So What!

With the official announcement that Tottenham have joined forces with a 4th club to partner in Hong Kong side South China, should we as fans be excited?

South China, who are apparently the major force in what is clearly a potentially massive football market, are probably a great team to link with, as are the other three partners, in South African league champions SuperSport United, MLS side San Jose Earthquakes and Internacional of Brazil. The scope for marketing is huge, but as a fan, does it make the slightest difference to us?

Perhaps our relationship, will ease the occasional deal, such as Sandro opting for North London, over Milan or Madrid, but am I being naive when I read about exchanging training methods and players for development?

Firstly I have to say I don`t really have any issue against Tottenham linking up with any side as long as there are some benefits heading our way. If all we get is some goodwill, it is a lot of effort for very little, but the potential to increase our profile in expanding markets, has to be something we look to, if we are to compete with the elite of the game and if this is the only benefit, then bring it on...

Wherever you travel, you always see shirts of the big four and taking some of this market is essential to increase merchandising sales and increased profile, will no doubt also increase the impact in companies looking to invest in the club.

This alone is good enough reason for me to be at least a little excited at the partnership. On the pitch it won`t make much difference to the players of today, until they look to renegotiate their new contracts or have to do a little more promotional work with a few Chinese phrases in, but the benefits will be the unseen ones from a fans perspective in putting money in the pot to strengthen the side.

Let`s not get excited about new training ideas or even the prospect of nicking their best players and I am certainly not going to start watching their games or even following their results, but if we increase our profile in the regions, we increase our bank balance with shirt sales etc and let`s not kid ourselves that is the main motivation and that is a good enough reason for me...

Sandro will not be coming to WHL. He will just look and see what happened to other such young super strars as: Dos Santos, Tarrabat, Boetang, etc. and think what did Spurs do for their careers? Played them in the resreves, then loaned them out, eventually will sell them on and then realise what a great talent they have lost. So Sandro to WHL is a no brainer.
johna
feck me.......we have more partners than katie price.
paddypower
paddypower dont be silly weve got FOUR not FOURTY
jljyid
fourty one :p ahahaha audere est facere :D
RamsesV
££££££££££'s, Silly pre-season tournaments that we can't get to unless we're loaded ourselves and jet lag our players!!.........God i'm a harsh sceptic!
RODSPURS
johna, Sandro won't look at Gio and Taarabt situations! if hes offered Prem football and a wodge of cash he will come! Plus hes a regular for Internacional and is now in the brazilian squad and not a barca reserve or a young kid from france/morocco with no experience like them two. or if he did look at some youngsters he could look at lennon who is now an england regular!!
Jabberyid
Paddy Powe that made me laugh :) Hmm i am confused about this.
spurs4evaa
rodspurs i think the result on saturday has had a really negative effect on you. deep breaths mate think of rainbows and bunnys and breaking cesc's jaw with bat............feel better?
jljyid
jljyid I think your right, I just pictured OldBarnDoor stamping on Van Persie's eye and I feel much better now..Great advice Ta!!
RODSPURS
The only thing that will stop him from joining is a barca or a real or one of the milans or utd chelsea etc
Jabberyid
i dont believe any of these rumours about us signing this player and that player until i see them holding up the shirt for photos. and glad i could help rodspurs
jljyid
what number were you jljyid? sounds like you were number 39 mate.lol.....i think this is all tying in with mansion not renewing their shirt sponsership deal and we could be looking for a far eastern giant to emblaze their name on the shirt and stadium......south america for players and far east for money..simples. i would rather a 'Sandro' from brazil than 'he play lik dung' from china
paddypower
Its all about shirt sales. If each of these sides are the top side in their countries no doubt they have the highest following. Those countries would also watch the prem in addition to their own league and I expect they all have their favourite prem team. If they then see their side is a partner with Spurs they then have a slightly more invested reason to make us their favourite prem team and therefore buy a shirt. The stuff about sharing training techniques etc is most likely the sweetner from thier perspective as they will benefit from us sharing a few training ground pointers. As for Sandro no doubt the partnership with International will ake negotiations simpler but will have no effect on whether the guy himself will actually want to come so if Real and Barca come a knocking we can kiss that one goodbye.
MJBSpur
like i said b4, it looks like there getting everything in place for a possible sale.
liamyid
Agreed with MJBSpur. It's all about the extra revenue in sales through shirts and more exposure in foreign markets. There are also benefits though unknown training techniques and increased scouting networks etc..

HONG KONG (AFP) - English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur have offered a trial to a Hong Kong international striker who scored against the London giants in a pre-season friendly, a news report said Wednesday. Chan Siu-ki, 24, will have 10 days to impress Spurs boss Harry Redknapp next month, the South China Morning Post said. The forward has scored 22 goals in 27 appearances for his club South China, the newspaper said, and netted with a long-distance volley against Spurs when the two teams met in Hong Kong in the summer. The Hong Kong champions and Tottenham on Tuesday agreed a "club partnership", the paper said, in an effort to boost the English side's profile in Asia.

39 who told you paddy she said she would stop stalking and talking about me lol. have i missed something i didnt even know mansion wasnt renewing the deal??????
jljyid
cant remember where i heard the mansion story from, but i have heard it a couple of times now.....maybe if there are any ITK's out there can they clarify this?
paddypower
come on oxford you seem to know alot more about our club than me with regards this sort of thing help us out
jljyid
johna if Sandro had that little confidence in his own ability then I wouldn't want him anyway. Maybe he'd look at other people like Lennon and Huddlestone to show him that youngsters do sometimes break through
bernio3000
i have thought a little bit more about this, we have only had a couple of successful asian players play at the very top level and they have been signed from european clubs due to the fact that not many clubs send scouts there, so maybe there is untapped well of talent waiting to found in china , a country of 1 billion people in it must, by law of averages have some superstars in the making, so maybe this could be a chance to set up a proper scouting network in this far flung places as well as making a few bob in the process
paddypower
Paddypower- If you speak as you write, have you ever contemplated swimming the Channel? That was one hell of a sentence.
lordjohnny
contemplated drinking it....but never swimming it
paddypower
bernio: I am actually still waiting for Thudd to break through. I am not happy with his total performance so far this year. On topic again, I was in asia this summer. Visited 3 different countries. I found, shirts from all the big four, plus one other club.......guess who it is......oh no, it was the magpies.....just shows how much two runs for the PL title counts. Regarding Sandro: I haven't seen him, and I guess none of you either have....but I am willing to take the chance....not happy about our midfield.....3 out of 12 possible points against the top four, and 1 out of 6 points against "Fighting teams" (Bolton and Stoke).....we do lack something in midfield....wish Modric was everything we missed, but I really think JJ/Thudd never will be good enough!!!
NorwaySpurs
as long as they pump us full of cash we can keep buying quality players from Europe and SAmerica and dont have to take their players.Dont count on china producing any stars there womens team could probably beat their mens.
Uskok
As for them wearing our shirts trust me I travel through asia alot theyll just wear whose, winning and at the top of the league ,fickle star chaser style fans, so might as well let them know the gooners shirt is due for the bin and get yourself some Spurs kit lol.
Uskok
might be able to shed some perspective on this! :D firstly south china are not really a force in china. in china there is the csl (chinese super league) and this incorporates the entire MAINLAND of china, hong kong however is separate entity and they also have their own league, of which this team belong. that means they only play teams within hong kong, and let me tell you, hong kong may have a large population but it is still only a city. I see it more as a stepping stone into the asian market more than trying to drum up support and options in china. secondly, i really can't see that much development of talent coming from china in the future, sure they have a huge population but believe me when i say that football is not that big a deal here, basketball, table tennis even snooker are more popular here and although you see football pitches at every school they are only used for morning exercise routines and military marching. i played in my city's local league and finished top scorer by 52 goals more than the next guy. i'm hardly good either, more of a chris armstrong! finally shirt sales, no one wears english football shirts here, they have no idea what they are. occasionally you see a street cleaner wearing a rip off england training tracksuit top or something random like that but people are not really buying shirts, japan korea thailand yeah but china no! the only shirts i see for sale are in the underground knock off markets and they only sell shirts that are hand made in china. they comprise of man u chelsea liverpoool ajax juve milan madrid and barca, oh and brasil. but to be missing out on that market is nothing, only tourists buy them. if we want to do any good on this front we should try indonesia or korea or something where they enjoy football. or if the club decide china is to be tried we should take on proper development with a club in the CSL and a large city like shanghai or chengdu. sorry about the huge post :)
yidinchina
Very insightfull yid in china no wonder the national team sux.
Uskok
Norwayspurs, of course Jj and Hudd are not good enough to take us to the next step, they have been around long enough and had many a chance and failed. So I agree with you. Jol took us to two top 5th spots soto progress we have to get into top 4 and I do not think we have the players to do it at this moment. As for the China trip,it's money in the bank I guess but I do think there must be some hidden talent around in Asian Countries,I am suprised there hasn't been a influx of Indian players coming through the ranks becuase I know loads of Indian-English born football players and they love the game although cricket is popular in India. Wearea multi-cultural Global World now and football is big business in loads of Countries so I bet there willbe some hidden talent around ready to be spotted!
loz
Norway, definately, my point was that he broke through, not that he's the finished article. Can't argue that he hasn't broken through because he's started very consistently this season. I'm not happy at all with some of his performances and hopefully he can add to his game.
bernio3000
I don't hold any hope of unearthing a superstar in china. Its either not in the their make up or not in their interest. Just think of how many Indian's and others from that area of the world we have in this country now and how many if any have broken through into pro football? The africans do well as they are generally big and athletic guys so are perfectly suited for a physical game like football where as asains tend to be slighter, probably more technical but don't have the physical build to cope with it. The fact that you can name the successful oriental players on one hand says it all - Nakata, Park, YLP and the guy at celtic (or rangers, I forget). Plus, like yid in China said, we would be far better off getting associated with a team in the Japanese leage as they are he ones who are fanatical about Football. (None of the above is in any way meant to offend or be considered racist, it's simply my personal observations)
MJBSpur
although there is a guy who plays for shanghai shenhua who can throw the ball like delap from throw-ins. i think chinese players can actually physically make it. i've never seen any players tire and they can run all day, they also don't mind the ruff stuff. they just have such a low level of coaching here. i think the biggest problem would be the fact that the government will not issue visa's to their own citizens lightly. the national team here really does suck ass! :D
