The best Spurs 11 that never was...

In the last few weeks we have come face to face with a few old boys who had the potential to bite us on the backside. Although it is very easy to be wise after an event, I thought I would select my best 11 of the ones that got away.

I think it is only fair to leave out the big money sales who actually impressed in a Spurs shirt. It would be too easy to pick players like Berbatov and Carrick, but not only did we get great money from them, but they were also players that we would have probably preferred to have kept in footballing terms. I also wanted to stick to players who would be able to play for us today, so have tried to keep any selection recent.

Marton Fulop: This could have so easily been Paul Robinson, but in Fulop we had a player who seemed so full of confidence in his ability and we swapped him for a keeper (Ben Alnwick) who looks a million miles from being a Prem keeper. Fulop has of course established himself as a quality keeper at Sunderland.

Pascal Chimbonda: Dumped not once but twice by Spurs, but some think he is a better right back that the ones who replaced him. I thought he was given terrible press since leaving Wigan and although I doubt he will return to haunt us, is certainly as good as the RB`s we currently have.

Younes Kaboul: At the time of buying him, I wanted Curtis Davies (Now Villa), but as the club made so much effort to buy him, then as so often the case, dump him far too early. Defensively he was never outstanding, but surely the main ides of signing him was to play him alongside an experienced partner, which never happened. He may have been sold early, but the reality was that we probably shouldn`t have bought him, if we weren`t going to work with him.

Ricardo Rocha: Damned for one mistake! I always thought he was a decent player and again one never given a chance, but managers or fans. He wasn`t a player to challenge the likes of Ledley, but was an excellent player to bring in to maintain a steady ship.

Chris Gunter: This boy still has time to prove Spurs wrong and could still go either way. I think his sale was more about Harry wanting the more pacy full back in Naughton than actually not rating Gunter.

Wayne Routledge: Very unlucky at Spurs. To get a long term injury on your debut and then see your understudy take the Prem by storm, must be a sickener. His confidence seemed to take a real battering as a string of injuries and loans to struggling sides hampered his progress, but I have a feeling that now he has regained his form, fitness and confidence at QPR, I think we will see him in the Prem next season with someone.

Danny Murphy: I have always liked Danny as a player since his time at Crewe, but Spurs fans never forgave him for twice "rejecting" Spurs for firstly Liverpool and then Charlton. I feel both were reasonable decisions, but you can`t turn down a club twice and be forgiven. A very capable player and decent leader, but on a hiding to nothing.

Kevin "Prince" Boateng: I have always been a massive fan and feel he will be a big player in the next year or so. Big, brave and technically excellent. At a time we are again rumoured to want Sully Muntari for around 15m, we sell a player who is just as good for a quarter of that figure. Am I missing something???

Andy Reid: He is not fat it is glandular! Another player who was dogged by injuries, but was also the victim of a lack of vision from Martin Jol, who only saw him as a left winger a role where Reid clearly doesn`t have the pace.

Mounir El Hamdaoui: The only player here who never wore a first team shirt, but has since shown himself as a very good player and goalscorer. Last season`s leading scorer in Holland and an established international with Morocco. He is now touted as one of Europe`s top strikers. Scoring in Holland doesn`t of course make you a great striker in the Prem, but...

Darren Bent: What can I say that hasnt already been written...

I bet we will read a number of people claim these players were or still are not good enough and this article isn`t meant to be critical of past managers, as this is the same with every top club. This is more about what might have been if things had panned out differently for players or the club. Perhaps there are others I have missed? Simon Davies, Teemo Tainio, Dean Marney, Luke Young and Stephen Kelly could go some way to making a good bench, whilst there may be a few I have forgotten altogether.

Let`s hope that in a couple of seasons time we aren`t writing the same article, but with the likes of Adel Taarabt, Dorian Dervite and Giovani dos Santos as additions to that eleven...

I cant see one player from that 11 having any hope of making our starting 11 now. Maybe steed and Bent will make the bench but that's it. It shows how effective we have been in the transfer market.
Yid_from_India
I'd defo have Kevin Prince Boateng here I never would of sould him in the first place but maybe he needed that move to make him a better player? I also would of had Luke Young starting 11 , but hey!! the only one you may have left out that I can think of is Matthew Ethrington. I think he is a tidy little player.
JonnyArdiles
I think the article should be 11 we were glad got away, if we lined up with that team in the carling cup against a championship team i'd be worried how many we'd lose by!
daveeeeed ginola
I even posted about Mounir El Hamdaoui being Dutch foootballer of the year yesterday and we let him go. He was always injured but seems to have got over that.
chappers
David Beckham.
cockeril
Out of that list of 11 I have to say Chimbonda and Boateng are the players I did not want to leave...Steed is a player on my list who I thought was good for Spurs and playing well at the moment. But at the end of the day the only player I do miss is Chimbonda cause I think he used to link up with Lennon so well and would play his heart out being dangerous in attack too.A real decent right back..Just a bit unfortunate I suppose
Daz Hotspurs
Darren bent proved the point why he is not here anymore, under pressure he dos'nt produce..........ok banging in tap ins at sunderland and charlton but when he is up against it, no bottle............anyone remember him playing in last years CC final???
WestStandEnclosure
although I tend to agree that Bent may not have the temprement for the highest level, I have always thought that he was treated badly at Spurs and is perhaps a player whi needs to feel loved and an automatic starter. In many ways his ability to score so many of his goals as a lone striker and/or away from home does slightly contradict that opinion though.
oxfordspur
In the spirit of things my 11 would be Fulop, Chimbonda, Luke Young, Rocha, Konchesky, Simon Davies, Zokora, Andy Reid, Atouba, El Hamdaoui, Kanoute. However, that 11 would struggle to finish in the top half of the Premiership. I think that this lement that's going around about how many promising players we get rid of is a bit short sighted. Literally none of the players in that starting 11 would start for us today and in actual fact, other than maybe Kanoute and Konchesly, none would make the bench. I think we have been brilliant in the transfer market over the last few years and the sales of players like Boateng and Bent, who although look in decent form for their new clubs, would never, in a million years get enough consecutive games to get their form up to where it is now if they'd stayed with us. So if you ask me, £20m or 2 ineffective benchwarmers? It's a no brainer.
KierzoSBC
just noticed that I didnt put in Steed, although he was written into my team on the scrap piece of paper... must be getting old.
oxfordspur
i agree with the chimbonda one, every week he continues to play corluka RB, who his is a CB, and proberly 1 of the slowest players in the league, i dont knw how harry can rate him a better RB then hutton, yh hutton has made mistakes but never given a decent run of games, and when he has played we looked a lot better, and still say if he started against stoke we would of won, corluka doesnt overlap, hutton does, and need any other evidence look how arshavin took him to pieces the other week, bloody corluka made him look like usain bolt
birdmanspurs
Agree Jonny. I would have Etherington in there. He good for his side this weekend.
Machineguncupid
birdmanspurs - 1st of all Corluka is a RB. He's always played RB for us, City and Croatia except when injuries force him inside. 2nd, Corluka's pace has never been in question for me. He's so composed on the ball that a quick pull-back generally leaves enough space for him to make the forward passes needed and chasing back he's got enough pace and positional sense to be as solid as any other RB in the Prem. 3rd. It's all a matter of opinion whether Hutton is as good or better that Corluka. I like Hutton's marauding runs but other than that I cant see any reason to play him ahead of the Croatian. He's never where he should be defensively and gives the ball away far to easily. In fact, his bombing into the box usually results in nothing more that a goal kick or the opposition counterattacking down the right hand side with only Lennon to beat. I'll agree that Hutton hasnt had a decent run of games but that has been down to injuries and the form of Corluka. Unfortuantely for the Scot there isnt much can be done about that. For Harry to just randomly drop Corluka and start playing Hutton, given that Hutton has not once proved himself to be a reliable player in a Spurs shirt, would be moronic. So i'm afraid Hutton will just have to wait for an injury or drop in form to get in, which, if recent history is to be taken into consideration, doesnt look likely. Lastly, to say that if Hutton played against Stoke we would have won is completely speculative, for all you know we might have been beatin by 2 or 3. It's the same with the match against Sunderland. Other than a dodgy header back which resulted in nothing, Corluka had a solid game. If you'd have stuck Hutton in there, would we have crumbled under the pressure they put on us? You obviously have a liking for Hutton but in reality, he is nowhere near the solid RB we need. I'm not saying Corluka is the best in the world, but I do think he's the best RB we've had at the club since Stevie Carr went to Newcastle.
KierzoSBC
Ox, can't agree that Bent should be there, when we sold Keane, Berbatov and Defoe, Bent was starting for us and was making a very poor job of it. Is it any wonder that as soon as the January window opened we made steps to get Keane and Defoe back.
RichmondSpur
I was really saddened that we sold Mounir El Hamdaoui, I remember in a pre season tournament for the Peace cup, he was outstanding. We decided instead to stick with "who eat all the pies" Mido. Bad move.
RichmondSpur
kierzosbc, u must be watching a different player, if anything that kyle walker looks better than the both of them, corluka is ideal for away from home, but when your at home and the away team is gonna be on the back foot u need a rb thats gonna back the right winger up, and he doesnt, and would say he is the downfall for bentley, bentley needs a rb to overlap so he can get the space to whip the ball in, ive been to all the carling cup games this year and when bentley had hutton behind him he looked brilliant, u just got to look back to his blackburn days where brett emerton would do that for him, dont get me wrong corluka is a good player, but good enough to take us to the next level i dont think so
birdmanspurs
WHAT!!! that is a terrible 11
liamyid
wheres kanoute on the list top scorer in in spain for 2 of the last 4 seasons only being beaten by eto and forlan
birdmanspurs
Chimbo was & still is pony. I liked both Kaboul and "the Prince" but can understand why they were moved on, one sale that still puzzles me is Steed, was nearly the fans player of the year and we sell him ??? Simon Davies was another player that i rated highly, the rest we are better off without imho.
Aussie'spur
anybody remember reto ziegler, why did we ever sell him he was 18 and a first team player, we could go on all day.
birdmanspurs
Its amazing how may teams in the prem have ex Spurs players in them.
MJBSpur
birdman - I think you mean Kyle Naughton because walker is a CB on loan to Sheff U. I'll admit he has "potential" to be a decent RB but in reality, right now, you wouldnt be able to trust him with playing week in week out in a team pushing for the Champs League. "Corluka is ideal for away from home, but when your at home and the away team is gonna be on the back foot". You may not realise this but the days of "Home team attack and away team defend" are long gone. It depends on the teams playing. If you look at our game against Sunderland. They were away from home but at no point would anyone have considered them to be "on the back foot" and then there's the game against Stoke which we completely dominated away from home. It's obvious that different players provide different tactical positives and negatives but have a different RB at home to the one that plays away breaks up the unity of the back four. It's essential for every team in the top flight to have as close to a consistent back four as possible so it's simply common sense to go with the player that covers more of the bases, then if needs be the other player can be introduced as a sub to change the game. Given how rarely Hutton comes on as a sub is testiment to how well Corluka has done this season. I get what you're saying about Bentley but again, in reality mate, it's touch and go whether he will ever play for us again. Lennon will be back for Wigan and Bentley will probably go in January which means the solidity of Corluka will be as important as ever. So important in fact that you may find Harry selling the Scot in order to bring in another Corluka-esque full back to cover Lennon. As I said before, I dont think Corluka is the best in the world but he most definately the smartest choice at RB from the players we currently have at our diposal.
KierzoSBC
birdman - Funnily enough. I put Kanoute in my 11! It really was a shame he went. For the first part of the season he was with us he was absolutely fantastic. Remember the goal he scored against, Leicester I think it was, where he caught it sweet in the half volley from about 35 yards? Absolute belter. I think the whole "I'm gonna play for Mali now lads" and pishing off to the ACoN when we were in the bottom 3 was maybe a bit too much for some of the Spurs back room staff to take. Tbh, I'd take him ahead of Crouch and Pav now.
KierzoSBC
walker is a rb mate, have u seen sheffield united games recentley, i admit he,s not ready at the moment, but in raw talent for a 18 year old, looks brilliant and is a better player than naughton, harry only kept naughton here because he can play lb and bale was injured, watched walker last nite and looked really gd, reckon he could give lennon a decent race aswell
birdmanspurs
It was against Everton Kierzo, but yes, remember it well! I would up until the 30 mark have accepted him back, thought he was a good player. The ACN ruined him, when he came back he didn't look the same. My biggest regret out of the players mentioned in the article is Younes Kaboul. I think we could have crafted him into a decent centre mid. He was pretty shoddy defensively but he could tackle, and his ball control was fairly decent. Bringing him away from the back line where he's slightly untrustworthy and bringing him into a position where losing the ball wouldn't have been as crucial could have been a masterstroke. He also had a killer shot on him. El Hamdaoui looked a relatively decent player, and when he went on loan to Derby my mate raved about him. The thing that would worry me about him is that he obviously didn't show enough in the premiership to warrant a place in the starting XI, yet he was an instant hit in Holland. Could be a case of Holland being a s**t league. Out of curiosity, I do for some reason want to see him back at the Lane!
bernio3000
u could say atouba aswell LMAO, remember when he be doing tricks in our own box
birdmanspurs
Chris Gunter is the only one on the list that I would have kept. Don't think any of the rest would have made our bench now. I'm more concerned now about holding onto some of our loaned-out players like Jamie O'Hara, Danny Rose, Taraabt etc.
ParkLane67
I guess we will be adding taarabt to this list soon eh after his recent comments :-( sob sob. Reading that 11 I have to say I am not disappointed whatsoever that they moved on - not one of them is good enough to grace our current starting 11. We have done well in the transfer market over current years.
TornadoYid
Steeeed yes, Bent yes, Etherington yes, Boeatang yes, Kanoute yes,
johna
I know we never got rid of these players and we sold them for a big profit but can you imagine If Carrick and Berbatov were still at Spurs today.Carrick would have sorted the CM Role and Berbs,we all know and miss Berbs im sure but thats beside the point..I have heard rumours about Kanoute coming back to Spurs in exchange for Pav but thats the Tabloids winding me up again im sure.

Apologies birdman. I honestly thought you meant Naughton as he's actually played for us. As opposed to the bigger, bulkier Walker who I unfortunately havent seen a lot of. Fair shout then if he's looking good but again, can we really expect to rely on someone so young and so inexperienced to help get us into the top 4? I dont know.
KierzoSBC
I do miss Zakoras energy too..He is playing pretty well at Saville the last time I checked
Daz Hotspurs
kierzo, i agree with u mate, but hate to say it, but the scum manage to bring these players through, so why cant we, every spurs supporter knws we got just as gd youngsters as them but ours never get a chance, look at livermore pre-season, he was out shining thudd then he,s sent out on loan? redknapp looks to here and now and has admitted that thing that scares me is if redknapp leaves in a few years time without winning nothing, were gonna have no silverware, and all our best youth players will be gone
birdmanspurs
true bird, they think wenger is god, now lets say if we were in arsen position an fin top 4 every year, say last 4, an fin 3rd an 4th and not winning anything, im sure we wud as fans want the manager sacked
123spurs
We were talking about this the other day Birdman. The main reason why Arsenal seem to be able to do it yet we cant is that Arsenal are secure in their success in that they seem happy enough to get to the odd semi-final and finish in the top 4 year on year meaning Wenger has the freedom to blood youngsters in competitions like the Carling Cup without any pressure being put on his job. Whereas we're constantly striving for something more than what we have meaning there is hightened pressure on the manager, board and players. From the manager's point of view, he needs results and almost instant success because, as you've no doubt seen this week, Spurs fans are notoriously fickle and will jump on his back even if the team wins!! This means that Harry's gonna be thinking to himself, "Why should I put my job in jeopardy just to bring on youngsters that I'm not going to get the benefit of?". It's understandable if you think about it. I dont think there's one person to blame for the attitude at Spurs, I think it's everyone form the fans, right up the Chairman wanting more and more every year. If we use loads of experienced players and the young kids end up getting sold at profit and we go on to become Champions League regulars, tbh, I'll be delighted. It's not ideal but if it works, the end will definately justify the means. The only gripe I would have is that we sometimes spend stupid money on these youngsters half knowing that they wont get the chance. If we make a profit or the players come in on the odd occassion and do a job for us that's fine but when we pay extortionate money for players like KPB or Kaboul who end up being as much use to us as solar powered lamposts and then move on for less than we paid, it makes you wonder what the point is when you can pick up players like Krancjar for £2.5m!!
KierzoSBC
kierzo couldnt agree more mate, but some of the young players we have got could be just as good as the ones were bringing in if they were given the chance, but il guess were never knw, its harrys way and i understand that just think if jol was in charge he would
birdmanspurs
Maybe so birdman but then Jol wasnt buying his own players. Arnesen and then Commolli were doing it and maybe he felt the youngsters were actually better than some of the dreggs that Commolli in particular decided to bring in. Harry, on the other hand, holds his and the clubs near future in his own hands and he maybe feels that to achieve what the club want is best kept in the hands of experienced players. I must admit that I cant really argue with him given where we're sitting in the League and how we've been brushing teams aside in the cup.

espen bardsen stephen kelly, ramon vega, gary doherty, paolo tramezzani dean marney, moussa saib, sean davis, jose dominguez rory allen, paul mcveigh now thats a dream team!!!

On an unrelated note. I was playing a gig last Sunday along with a couple of French bands, one of which were from St Etienne. I got talking to their drummer who was a massive Saint Ettiene fan who didnt seem to have a lot of time for me when he found I was a Spurs man. It was broken English but the message from him was that Damien Commolli is despised at that club aswell and he was blaming us for dumping him on them along with stealing their best player back in 2006!! lol
KierzoSBC
Ramon Vega? Stuboi, I think the glues really starting to get to you!! He had a cool name though.
KierzoSBC
bs birdman Corluka is world class Cockeril hates him but he dosent know fa anyway and neither do you
Uskok
Im sorry, I cant agree that our kids are as good as arsenals. Spurs have maybe 3/4 who are even close to that level - arsenal can field a premiership level side of youngsters. And although they are good at bringing the young ones through they only get the chance (other than carling cup, which spurs are playing youngsters in too) when they are good enough. You could argue that spurs simply dont develop them well enough to get them to that level...or possibly that none of our youngsters are really as good as we like to think.
Joshtottenham
What are you lot talking about. I think Corluka is the 10 x better than Hutton, Hutton is ****, that's why HR won't play him, I like Corluka and would play him week in and week out. I agree with very few of those in your starting 11 but for sure Mounir El Hamdaoui, is one I saw pre season, and he was never ever given a chance. This kid is quality, and we should have kept him, I'm gutted we let him go. I also think Kanute would have done a job for us. I'd certainly have him over Crouch. Crouchy does his best for us and is a lovely guy, works he's guts out but some of his close control OMG, it made me cringe. Good in the air obviously, but for me an impact player from the bench. I'm sure we will be saying that about some of the others soon, shame. Oh and bring back Jose Dominguez, if our current players had his comittment and entertainment factor we'd be top of the prem. lol
YidEdy
we've got the new Dominguez in Adel Taarabt... well, entertainment wise anyway. Not sure his work ethic is quite the same! Still, he's had 4 MOM performances this season for QPR so fingers crossed he decides to stick here till the end of his contact and 'Arry gives him a run out next term. With regards to the article, Routledge, Etherington, Kanoute, Chimbo, KPB, Fulop, STEEED.... so many that had we kept hold of, we may have got further than we have in the past
Dave the Yid
Totally agree on Taarapt, (gio as well) I would have liked us to give Thomas Peckart a run too. Surely he can't be a mug with a record of 20 goals in 20 games for our reserves. I know he wants to leave through lack of opportunities, but not even sure if he has yet.
YidEdy
Josh shut the fck up about Are5ea1 kids do you support them or something;>O tongue in cheek before you get excited! Uksok the Spurs expert hahahaha

I like Corluka even though he is slow I rate him but I also rated Chimbonda, rather had kept Chimbonda for cover than Hutton any day. Gunter is proving to be a very good player for Forest and he still could make it in the PL. It'slike wepaid somuch money for Naughton sold Gunter and we never play Naughton! I think England and Spurs fans ruined Robinson. Fulopis established and I would rather have kept him than Alnwick. Kaboule had a raw deal and he has potential tobe a very good player but prefer dawson. Rocha again slaughtered for one mistake, true professional how he handled himself at Spurs and could have provided steady cover but like Kaboule he wouldn't make 1st 11 while we have Woody,King and Dawson. Routlege, decent player on his day but another inconsistent player. Murphy wasn'tthat impressed with him but a steady player and KPB I think needed more opportunites, like a lot of players they just don't seem to improve at Spurs. Reid would have been good squad player and back up but not good enough to make our 1st 11 now if we want to push for CL. Hamdaoui, no idea about him! bent, willscore goals but willbottle it as shown against us when the pressure is on,a bit like how players do when they put a England shirt on! Malbronque was a bad decision one of the most hard working consistent versitile players we had and would be great cover in this present team. Carrick and Berby are the ones who would be prolific in this Spurs side. carrick with Palacios and berby up front with Defoe of today or Keane of yesterday and Modric in the side and lennon of today, awsome. Berby is never going to be liked by Utd unless he solo scores ana attrick to win the CL cup. They don't rate him and he is gettingolder and should have stayed at Spurs and not had his head turned. He may look back at his trophies when he lives PLbut can he hold his hand on his heart and say he played enough to win them! Getting a bit like that with Carrick! looking at who we let go at least we didn't lose someone like Ronaldo like Utd, haaaaaaa
loz
birdman Corluka is . Your entitled to your opinion. cokeril please turn off that running tap of complete bs.And save your old school supporter ********* I couldnt care less ,this isnt a communist club as far as i can tell so I cant say what i like.

Yeah got to agree our kids aren't as good as Le Scum's! Otherwise they would havcome through! Harry isn't going to ignore them for no good reason his pedigree speaks for itself on that front Lampard, Ferdinand,Cole et al, so if they were good enough, or strong enough or just plain ready for the first team i'm pretty sure they would be there!
Jabberyid
I would imagine the Fulham manager would turn them into a Champions League team.
ronwol
Timotee Atoube - the goal against Newcastle and the general fact no one (including himself) knew what he would do next quality! I also remember when we played Leicester some years ago and the impact of Dalmat and Mabezalia (?? the South African), Rohan Ricketts seemed really good for a season. A friend of mine is a NOtts County fan and raves about Jonnie Jackson - remember he was going to be the next big thing
TamworthYid
Timothee Atouba, was a talented player, but probably should be sectioned under the mental health act. Dalmat though, I liked him I remember his cc hatrick well. With the right manager, I think he was worth a punt.
YidEdy
Didn't Dalmat have a 'bad attitude' so was sent back from his loan? Another one I've remembered was Blondell - one of David Pleat's signings I think. In fact I think he only ever played when Pleast had a few games in charge?
TamworthYid
