'If It's Football, It's Vital'

A cosy chat with Vital Wigan

Firstly, is Roberto Martinez the real deal?

Absolutely, he is a fantastic coach and knows the game inside out. He is attempting to change the whole philosophy of the club and drag us into the 21st Century, we have adopted a new playing style and it is fantastic to see us knock the ball around instead of the aimless hoof up the pitch hoping for the best.

There was a fans forum in the week with Roberto, 350 packed into a room listening to him speak impeccably for over 90 minutes, the guy is just brilliant and we have ourselves a top, top manager.

Have to say I was a massive fan of his from his time with Swansea and am delighted he looks to be doing so well as a replacement for Steve Bruce, in what could have so easily been a nightmare, ala Paul Ince at Blackburn. Do you worry that he will be poached, by the big boys from England or Spain?

I don`t worry I know he will be off one day, I`d guess back to Spain, but for the moment he is our boss and also he is a Wigan fan, the club is really in his heart, we he left as a player back in 2001 he refused to accept offers from clubs in the same division as we were at the time because he said he could not face playing against his beloved Latics, the guy is a legend.

It has been a mixed season for you guys. Brilliant wins at Villa and demolishing Chelsea, but heavy defeats against United, Arsenal and bottom of the table Pompey. Which one is the real Wigan, and where do you see yourselves at this time?

We are still searching for consistency, the superb performances against Villa and Chelsea have also been matched in the win against Burnley and the draw at home to Manchester City, in other games we have played quite well in spells, believe it or not against Manchester United for 50 minutes there was nothing in it then we fell apart but there were other factors behind that.

We are a club in transformation and aiming to become more than just perennial relegation candidates with European qualification a target to aim for, the boss himself says this will take time to achieve and he has talked about a three year plan, I believe we are well on course, there are some excellent players in the squad and the promise of more to be brought in.

What I like about Wigan, is that you have a great mix of silk and steel and from the outside looking in, appear to be a fantastically run club despite being considered a Rugby town. Where do you see the future of Wigan Athletic?

Ahhh the great old myth, we are a rugby town.

Wigan is surrounded by Manchester, Liverpool, Bolton, Blackburn, Burnley, Oldham and Preston and up until recently we were the least achieving club in the area, this allowed a large number of Wigan football supporters to grow up supporting the more successful teams of the area, the two Manchester clubs and two Liverpool clubs for example have large fan bases in the town especially males aged 25-50, but slowly and surely the club is winning over the youngsters who have only known Wigan Athletic as a successful Championship/Premier League club and we now have the largest percentage of under 16 season ticket holders in the Premier League, so the future is indeed very bright.

Please don`t take this question as a put down as it is certainly not meant to be one. But do you realistically see yourselves as a side who can come to places like White Hart Lane and win or are you still looking at preservation. What is the clubs and fans mindset?

We have to do, we are in the same division and we are competing on a supposedly level playing field, what we are doing is shaking off the little Wigan mindset that former boss Paul Jewell instilled in the club in an attempt, I think, to give us some sort of siege mentality, Martinez says that he wants us to play without fear, we did that against Chelsea, went like for like and to be honest played them off the park, now I am not saying we are going to be challenging for the title any time soon but surely it is better to have a go than give up the ghost even before a ball is kicked.

Not all fans are comfortable with the way we are playing at the moment, some fear it is a recipe for relegation but personally I think it is a breath of fresh air and to answer your question yes I do believe we can go to places like White Hart Lane and win we have proved this by going to Villa Park and winning and being the only club to beat Burnley at Turf Moor this season.

Sorry about that, it was more about establishing your ambition and your own feeling of where you see yourselves as a Premiership side. Are you now part of the establishment?

We are but I am sure that there are parts of the establishment that aren`t happy with us being here, this is our fifth season in the Premier League, 3 mid-tableish finishes and one dice with relegation in the previous four but still we get the Mickey taken by Match of the Day, I won`t dwell but recently there has been a massive issue with the way the program portrayed our club and town following the game against Fulham, stirred up a lot of vociferous complaints from fans.

What about Spurs? We obviously have our opinion, which changes with every performance, but what do you think of us and our prospects?

Well you look to have a decent team and you`ve certainly made a good start to the season, Keane, Crouch and Defoe are all goal scorers so obviously you carry a big threat to any side that you face, your midfield looks really strong and with Wilson in there he will be making it tick no doubt.

I think that the top four may be out of your reach this season but the FA cup final in May could be a great way to end the season for yourselves, so I see you finishing 7th but winning the FA cup

Now to the game. How do you see it panning out and how will Wigan set out and look to play on Sunday?

I think we will have the lion`s share of possession, that`s our style and I see the game ending in stalemate, I am going for a 1-1 draw

Just out of interest. If Wigan won the Cup with a Thierry Henry handled goal, would you feel you cheated or take the result, regardless of how it was achieved?

I don`t like cheating and there is an almighty inquest ongoing into the Irish elimination from the World Cup play-offs, but I`d take winning the FA cup like that any day.

Was it actually deliberate or just instinct? Have any of our or your players ever handled and got away with it or dove and won a penalty or free-kick? It just feels bad because we were all rooting for the Irish to win, if it had been down the other end and Keane had done what Henry had and Dunne headed the ball into the net would we still be debating this, I don`t think so. Just a pity that the smug Monsieur Platini got his wish to see the French qualify. Personally I found it more scandalous at how the decision to seed teams was brought in at the last minute

Cheers for the chat worbo, I would wish you the best of luck for sunday, but you know I wouldnt mean it ;-)
oxfordspur
cant see a draw spurs 3-1 at least
glendalough yid
I stayed up in Wigan after the game last season. A friend and I walked into a packed pub and were the only Spurs fans in there. We stayed all night, and I've never been made more welcome on our travels. Top lads. I'm a bit worried about this game, and until the team sheet is made public, it would be pure folly to predict a result.
Scottspur
Agree Scott. This is a tough game, and until i see what Harry is going to do with the starting 11, i wouldnt want to. I hope at some point, he will stop experimenting. I rate Harry higher than any manager we have had since Venables, but i am still nervous about who he will pick this weekend.
Machineguncupid
wigan have a very athletic (excuse the punn) side. dont think we will match them for pace without lennon and they will probably keep the ball better than us. i honestly cant see us winning with no modric or lennon or bassong. is woodgate ok now after his heroic clearence?
pachna_spurs
I am looking forward to getting back to normality following the international break, I see a 1-1 but also looking forward to seeing Palacios Vs Thomas, should be a good duel
worbo
It will be a tight, tough game, unless we can get back to our proper home form, rather than the last 2 home games where we got a poor result against Stoke, and Sunderland where we were second best, and mugged a result. We must play 4-4-2 with width. team has to be Gomes, Corluka, King, Woodgate, BAE, Lennon, Wilson, JJ/Huddlestone, Kranqcar, Defoe Keane/Crouch. If Lennon is out I would reluctantly play Bentley to start RMF. CMF a up front it is down to how Harry sees it.
Frank
From a league ambition point of view, we must see this as "must win" game and 3 points, in readiness for difficult away trips to Villa, and Everton. We can't afford any more slip-ups against lower teams at home, given our obvious difficulty in getting results against the top sides either home or away. To keep up with Man City, Villa, Liverpool we must win these home games.
Frank
Incidently I would agree with the Wigan guy's opinion of Martinez. He is an intelligent, articulate young manager with a refreshing football philosophy. He deserves to succeed, as he surely will, either at Wigan, or later elsewhere.
Frank
Good News that Lennon IS BACK!! (on the spurs website) that will give us the Pace! I would say Have Krankjar on the Left! Have Keano and Defoe Upfront! Anyone??
GrinsteadYid
Palacios has been weak as of late. Hopefully this wakes him up.
WhiteHartSpur
Also good news on the website about Bassong, Gio and Modric also. Gio back in full training next week, Modric now running and doing ball work and Bassong ready. As for Krancjar, i have been surprised that he didnt play against Arsenal and Sunderland. He has been porforming well. We need that width. Without question.
Machineguncupid
GrinsteadYid, that would be my selection. I wonder if the banter between the Honduran lads will be a real tonic for Wilson. he has had a terrible time personally in recent months and this game and the rivalry may just give him the spark that has been missing.
oxfordspur
I respect this side like their manager and loved it when they stuffed chelski want us to win though.
Uskok
Totally agree Frank! Formation, ambition and about Martinez. But I think we have better chances of winning a game like this than the one against Stoke. Wigan wants to play football, and not just destroy the game. Our biggest concern should be if they outplay us, which I don't think they would have if Modric played.........Will be very exciting! COYS!
NorwaySpurs
This has to be 3 points, the players have to be thinking that. If we want to keep pace up top this game, all our home games have to be "must win" games. Yeah GrinsteadYid, krank for the left mid' position and i hope thats true about lennon, lets get modders back now and rediscover that early season form. COYS!!!!!
Himwhatwhats
I think our side will be: Gomes, Corluka Dawson Woody BAE, Lenny Thudd SWP Kranjcar, Keano Defoe. Bench: JJ, Bassong, Crouch, Pav, Bale, Walker, Bentley. One other idea if we need pace in midfield is to put Thudd to pair with Woody at CB and play JJ midfield. Their threat though I see is Rodellega so a strong Daws display will be necessary.
COYS R US
What is Shaun Wright Phillips doing in your midfield? ;-)
Scottspur
Sergeant Wilson Palacios if you don't mind. Wouldn't want that ***** when we have lenny. HEARD THAT THEIR THOMAS IN CM missed his plane from International duty so is a doubt for Sunday.
COYS R US
Dont worry about Major Thomas, he'll be back
worbo
Worbo, from our point of view I hope he turns out like Corporal Jones on Sunday. Don't panic. LOL.
COYS R US
but long hopeful hoofs up field is the wigan tradition! martinez is ruining it!!
attwooll9
great news on lennon, im feeling a lot more optimistic on sunday now. he requires so much attention from the opposition that just him being on the field will cause wigan to double up on him and neglect other areas of there game and create more space for the likes of keane and defoe and niko and hudd
pachna_spurs
also great news that luka is finally doing ball work again. and gio in full training next week hopefully means he may feature at some point in harry's plans
pachna_spurs
Can't predict this one until I see the team news.
loz
Another grind of a game against a nonentity of a team from ooop north. God it's so tiresome to have to bother with these kinds of matches.
jinkin jimmy dimmock
In more exciting news some old grainy footage of GDS actually playing has been discovered!
jinkin jimmy dimmock
Bit harsh jinkin jimmy, I'm sure Chelsea thought like that before they got stuffed by them! WORBO, if you're reading, what's the heads up on Sarge Palacios' brother? I hear Wigan are finalising a deal with him. I know nothing of him, thought you could shed some light? Oh and on the topic of Palacios... What kind of reception do you expect him to get on Sunday?
bernio3000
Certain rumours flying that Robbie Keane won't be playing this weekend! He is mentally and physically exhausted by Wednesday night in Paris! Personally i would like to see Pav chucked in with Defoe! Why not hey? Its hardly a massive gamble, we know they can play well together and it could give Pav the opportunity to make or break his Tottenham career now he had nothing to do in June/July next summer! My team would be (if all fit): Gomes; Corluka, Woodgate, Bassong, Bale; Lennon, The Sarge, Jenas, Kranjcar; Pav, Defoe! Contoversial!
Jabberyid
Jabber where did u come with that? Heres Harrys take...http://goal.com/en/news/9/england/2009/11/21/1638120/tottenham-hotspur-boss-harry-redknapp-brushes-robbie-keane No fing way that russian will be seeing that pitch for a while! Harry wont play players unless they deserve to be in the line up. If he does come on he will get a chorus of booooooooooos! *****!
Mix26
Really? I've been to the lane a few teams this season and whenever he comes out to warm up the Park Lane End starts singing his name! The Robbie thing was a link on Twitter than comes up from a Tottenham news thing! Could be utter crap! I hope if Keane does play he is the ROI captain from Wednesday not the PSB we get! Pav's comments are getting tiresome, but the world cup dream is over and Harry's press conference yesterday stated he didn't want him to go unless good money! He's not quite at Berba beginning of last season yet! Don't think we've seen the last of Roman yet!
Jabberyid
How long has he been here?the funny thing is u say it can make or break his carreer at spurs so that must mean he has been uninspiring for far too long! With 5 goals in 36 games for spurs and a thunder cloud over his head how on earth do u want him to start???
Mix26
My money is on him getting the booo even when the team sheet is read out. Im not a fan of it,but would welcome him getting some stick.
Mix26
Well he hasn't scored 5 goals for Spurs has he! He's scored about 15! Basically he's not been starting this season, and quite rightly as we've had players scoring goals, but thats not to say he isn't a good player. I won't be devastated if he doesn't start, its just an option, considering the clamour on here for Robbie to be benched and if Crouch starts we just lump it to him! For a time when Defoe came back, him and Pav looked good and i seem to remember we beat Stoke at home and them two ripped em apart! Not saying it will happen again but why not! If i wanted to play devils advocate, has anyone seen the words come out of Pav's mouth?
Jabberyid
I was refering to the prem jabber. His other 10 came in the cc. he has been poor for us since his arrival. He has not been starting cause he aint good enough. no cause he had to have his interpreter say it in english. I bet hes hoping the translation was wrong. I want whats best for spurs, pav wants whats best for pav. Thats that!
Mix26
I agree with Jabber, it's far too easy for the players to just lump it up to Crouch from the off if he starts. Even though Pav will definitely be offski in January, I think it would be a good opportunity for him to regain some credibility and also some value. Give him a half, and if he looks disinterested, take him off and that'll be that - adios. What Redknapp must do though is to play with width. Lennon will be back, but to avoid being predictable, we also need width on the left; either Kranjcar or Bale. If we can get behind their defence and get the ball over, I think either Pav (if he's got his head out of his arse) or Crouch are more suited to that kind of service rather than the big lump forward. What Redknapp must avoid, is trying to fit all three CMs or Keane into the midfield. Width will (hopefully) win it.
Scottspur
Fair enough mix, it's just its easy to make judgement on these comments when we don't know who they've come from and they all seem to have come after "Pav has spoken to a Russian newspaper" because they didn't have an ulterior motive did they? The frequency of them and the content was getting boring but its all rather irrelevant now isn't it! He's nothing to have instant first team football for now for the short term anyway! Also, goals are goals, this was Franks point last season that he was scoring loads league goals and fair enough, but i'd like to see how he fairs now! He might have a different attitude and i agree completetly Scottspur, exactly what Harry could do! Wigan could easily have us sussed, especially as Stoke game drew a blank and Sunderland wasn't a good performance. Mix it up a bit (no pun intended) COYS!!
Jabberyid
No I was having a dig at him thats all, however his agent has been jabbering abit... In fact Jabber are u pavs agent??? Lol! I just dont see him getting game if the truth is that he wants out, we cannot set a precedent for players who moan and then get in the team. I hope Harry plays kranc or bale, i cant see him mixing it up too much as we know what happens if we begin to experiment too much... i would like to see keane defoe again but i think aary may go with Crouch.
Mix26
If i only i was Pav's agent i'd be getting so much air time ha ha! In all honesty i can't see Pav starting, and he may never start again and be off in Jan, but what i will be really concerned about is if Harry tries to cram Keane, Defoe AND Crouch into the first 11! Especially after Niko changed the game against Sunderland, although the change of formation will have helped. If he goes with Crouch and Defoe, Harry has to hammer home to them not to spank the ball 50-60 yards at Peter's head, but we do need someone who can cross a ball at his head! I agree Mix, and i had Bale and Kranc in my first 11 for today cos i'm losing faith in BAE's ability to defend!
Jabberyid
Exactly Mix, if we play Pavlyuchenko now then Harry is Pavlyuchenko's biatch and more players will start quoting how unhappy they are and how they want to move just so they can get in the team the following week! IF Pav was being genuine about how he was wary that his place in Russia's world cup team was in jeapardy and that was his reason for being a whining little nob, then I'd like him to now come out and say that he's ready to fight for his place, that he wants to be successful here. Only then would I consider him a Spurs player.
bernio3000
Agreed Jabber, Harry really needs to drive it home that Crouch's head is not a target and you're a lazy coward if you lump a ball up to him. Takes no effort or ability to put a ball 20 ft in the air with the hope that itll drop on Crouch's bonce. Play it to his feet and we might actually get somewhere.
bernio3000
I have to agree with tha bernio he probably should come out with some kind of comment saying he's willing to fight for a place especially as Harry has still said he's wanted!
Jabberyid
Hitting long balls up to crouch isnt a bad thing, its not my preferd style of football but it works IF we get the support up early. Thats been the problem when we do it, no one is on the same wave length so it comes straight back. Hopefully lennon plays and they'll double up on him leaving space inside for someone to run on for that dreaded 60 yard hoofs. I dont see it as a hoof when Thud does it though, the guy can be the best "quaterback" in the prem if he finds 3rd gear. I dunno about pav, i honeslty believe if he had a decent run in the first team (prem games) he'd get his fair share of goals but i dont hink he wil now ad he'll be gone by the end of jan'. 3-1 win for us on sunday is what i'll be writing on my betting slip today.
Himwhatwhats
I don't know who started all this 'quarterback' nonsense (probably some idiot SKY commentator), but nonsense is exactly what it is. Exactly just how many assists has Huddlestone got.
Scottspur
If pav is man enough to stand up and fight then im behind him 110%! But to me he has not improved at all since he came so im over it. I too will be annoyed jabber if the 3 strikers get the nod. Also once modders is back the bean pole wont be used as an outlet too much. The key to us having to launch it up there is because modric aint here to link up the play. Im hoping kranc can show more of that tomoz.. Im actually ganna go for a Defoe crouch start.
Mix26
I personally think that Huddlestone is a brilliant Match of the Day player because they show the 2/3/4 excellent passes he seems to do every game. What they omit is the 10 passes that don't pull off. Thudd needs to work on his timing and decision making if he's ever going to excel. Also, hitting long balls up to Crouch isn't bad, what is bad is continuing to do so when it's not working. Against Arsenal he was beaten time and time again in the air by the two centre backs, and yet we soldiered on with that style of play. That my friend is bad. It's lazy, and it's terrible to watch. I have no problem with it occasionally if it works, but the players need to realise it's an option, one of many, rather than the neccessity that it's turning into. Hopefully with Lennon back tomorrow we can have some width on one flank, skill and precision on the other.
bernio3000
Thast why i said he could be, even 'arry has said he's a fantastic passer and feels relaxed when he has the ball as he doesnt give it away that much...as for the quaterback thing, i just think its an easier way of saying the guy can sit back and spot the runners to pass to them...or maybe a lazier way.
Himwhatwhats
I tell you what! I know i may regret saying this, but why can't we get 4th this season! If we get our s h i t together and start playing like we did at the begining of the season we can do it because Liverpool, Man City and Villa are not that good! Liverpool and City are currently playing a circus of a football match and drawing 2-2 with not long left, Villa are improving but we shouldn't be scared of them. Next weekend at Villa WILL be the biggest game of the season for us! If we beat Wigan tomorrow (which at home we really should) then beating Villa away will tell us where we are at the moment and may dictate where the second half of the season will take us! If you think about it, its virtually December at we are 4th. It can happen! Believe! COYS!!!
Jabberyid
I'm of the same opinion. We've had a couple of injuries to key players, didnt have any of our main CD to call on for the first couple of games and have had our main striker banned for 3 games...we sit 4th. I might be wrong but have villa or man city had anything close to that yet?. I dont think we've been playing well lately either so when modders gets back and we start to hit form again i think we can make a top 4 finish. Its 2-2 at liverpool, that keeps us 4th...COYS!!!!
Himwhatwhats
day going well so far. excellent result for us at anfield
pachna_spurs
Also bernio, i've just scrolled up and for the life of me i cant find where i said hoof the ball up the pitch for the whole game and use it as our only tactic.
Himwhatwhats
all we need now is burnley to keep up there incredible home form and deny villa 3 pts
pachna_spurs
Yep, we're all burnley fans then i guess. Robbie blake special please.
Himwhatwhats
COME ON BURNLEY!!!
Jabberyid
I would like to add i did not know Burnley were leading when i said that! But.....YEEEEESSSS! COME ON BURNLEY!!!
Jabberyid
The result tomorrow will depend completely on which Wigan turn up. As reflected n the article - they are a bit jekyll & hyde - stuffing chelsea and beating villa but also losing to pompey. If the chelsea conquering wigan show up then we will more than have our hands full, otherwise it should be a spurs win. I have an orrible feeling it will be a 0-0 or 1-1 game. Though the way the results are going today with scousers and citeh drawing and burnley beating villa - the lads should be fired up to pull clear of those teams and cement our place in 4th spot for the time being. In regards to team selection I agree with Grinstead - Lennon Krancjar Defoe and Keane - they are both our best strikers - I dont think anyone can really argue against that.
TornadoYid
Go on sunderland!!!!!!
Himwhatwhats
bent u beauty. lol
pachna_spurs
Bent scores with his arse! Possibly! Unsubstantiated! Probably closed his eyes walloped it and hoped for the best!
Jabberyid
I suppose an everton win is too much to ask for.
Himwhatwhats
Hmm! I know we were crap but i wonder how Arsenal would have gotten on against us without Van Persie?
Jabberyid
We woulda lost..look at that farce from the kick off when we let that spanish dwarf run down the middle of the pitch....balls villa scored.
Himwhatwhats
HESKEY! ******** HESKEY! JESUS WEPT!
Jabberyid
True Himwhatswhats, my point really was that Le Scum appear s h i t without Van Rapey!
Jabberyid
Well they've got a few to prove they aint coming up but i hope they are. Villa scoring doesnt change much if we win tomorrow so i hope to god we dont waste this chance.
Himwhatwhats
Ah well at least they only got a point! That makes them 4th on goal difference until tomorrow! COYS!!!
Jabberyid
Yes mate COYS.!!!
Himwhatwhats
Iv always admired Darren Bent lol!
TornadoYid
lol yeah, i've never read anything but admiration for the man on this forum.
Himwhatwhats
Mix 26, I agree wholeheartedly with your thougts on Pavyluchenco. As you correctly state he has only scored 5 goals in the PL and plenty against lesser teams in the CC, hardly an acceptable return for a £13M striker. He doesn't start for Harry because he ain't bloody good enough, simple.
Frank
The results involving Man City, Villa, Liverpool Arsenal today, make it imperative that we get 3 points tomorrow, and pull a bit away from them, and also off-set the rise of Sunderland into a challenging position after they beat scum. We must beat a team who have returned 14 points from 12 games, there can be no excuse for any result but a Spurs win.
Frank
I believe that it was Harry who started to quarterback stuff when he first took over at spurs and restored Hudd to the line up.....was definitely in an interview I read, although I think it was with Tom and he quoted Harry.........The 'lumping it up to crouch' argument is silly, if harry cant get them to stop doing it without taking pete off then we might as well go home now cos the team is screwed. I reckon we'll see 4-4-2 with keane either up front or benched and crouch starting (probably the latter). Very interesting to read what mix posted from Harry on keane: http://goal.com/en/news/9/england/2009/11/21/1638120/tottenham-hotspur-boss-harry-redknapp-brushes-robbie-keane
Joshtottenham
Himwhatwhats I'm not accusing you of saying anything, you were saying knocking balls up to Crouch isn't a bad thing and I was simply saying its okay as an option but not all the time as it ends up being. What part of that makes you think I'm accusing you of saying "we should hoof balls to Crouch all the time"? As for the results today...FANTASTIC. I was hoping whole heartidly for a draw at Anfield, could not see anything other than a Villa win today so the bonus that they dropped two points is brilliant. HOWEVER, it's all in vain and counts for absolutely nothing unless we beat Wigan tomorrow. COYS!!!
bernio3000
bernio3000.........Palacios's brother is a defender and supposedly very good, we have been linked with him since the summer and apparently due to sign him in January....As for Wilson, he will always get a very warm reception from the Latis fans, the guy is a legend
worbo
Nice to know worbo, the trend in recent years is to boo whoever comes back to a club, regardless of the circumstances. Nice to know some fans can respect what a player has done for a club still.
bernio3000
Ok Wigan fans please leave your commenets here............
cockeril
Quote "I think we will have the lion`s share of possession, that`s our style and I see the game ending in stalemate, I am going for a 1-1 draw" have to say I laughed when i read that thinking you were nuts Wigan having more posession aginst us in our back yards but it looks......even so redicolous now hahahhahahahahah!!!!
cockeril
Well I hope I am as magnaminus in victory as you are cockeril
worbo
worbo, that is a statement mate!!! only Man u cud come to spurs and have more possesion it just doesnt happen, we have been solid at home ewvr since harry took charge, also like to no if u still think were finish 7th?? Im not a dreamer but i exect at the very least 5-6th place!
liamyid
I don't know if anyone will read this but does anyone remember when the guy from Vital Wigan predicted a 1-1 draw?? Hehe.
