'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Tottenham Hotspur Vs. Wigan Athletic.

A welcome return to real football, as Spurs take on Wigan in a game which should embrace two teams looking to play good football, or at least try to...

Spurs will want a return of some fluidity to their game, whilst Wigan for all their new brand of Champagne football, desperately need some consistency and for a little luck to go their way. Although I stand to be corrected tomorrow, I wonder if the break could prove more welcome for Tottenham than for Wigan, who perhaps need games to establish a better understanding, where as Spurs could have perhaps welcomed a chance of scenery.

In many ways Wigan may well fancy their chances tomorrow, based on our stuttering form in recent weeks and a positive start is sure to make the home players and fans nervous after five, shall we say unconvincing performances from the boys. The break may well have taken the players` minds off of domestic issues and they can come back refocused and refreshed, still very much in contention for the CL places and they will know very well that four points from tomorrow and the trip to Villa Park would go a long way to re-establishing their momentum.

Wigan are playing "Brazilianesque" football under Roberto Martinez (well at least for them) and have probably deserved better from recent games and performances. Changing the style and mindset from the Steve Bruce Reign, is a very big and tough task for Martinez and I am delighted that he has stepped up to the Prem and a potential banana skin of a job and looks to be establishing himself as a genuine contender for the top jobs in the very near future.

Wigan travel down to the game, with only Maynor Figueroa out, which looks likely to give a WHL return to Erik Edman, who was so prematurely dumped for Lee Young Pyo, a favourite of Martin Jol (obviously behind the back of Damian Comolli...

Despite Wigan being without Figueroa, they will have the equally impressive Honduran Hendry Thomas to put fire in the belly of our own Wilson Palacios. This is a game where I genuinely hope we see the re-emergence of Palacios, after a few months of personal turmoil. Not that he has played badly, but I get the feeling that the edge has been lost from his game following the confirmation of the death of his brother, and in a way the potential banter between fellow countrymen, may have sparked something into Wilson and put a smile on his face and some fire in his belly. For me he has the toughest job on the pitch for Spurs and if he isn`t firing on all cylinders, we lose something as a team.

For Spurs, much will depend on the mindset of Robbie Keane. After the heartbreak of the Republic missing out on the World Cup, Harry may opt to give him a rest for tomorrow, but Robbie could just as well come back and be desperate to play. This will be a 50/50 call for Harry and could easily go either way. If he does play, it has to be as a striker. I am a huge Keano fan, but in attack, not a left midfielder, which in the continued absence of Luka Modric, could be his place this weekend, but I sincerely hope not, for him and the team.

The good news is that we look likely to see a return of Aaron Lennon and possibly Sebastien Bassong, with the former, certain to start and perhaps Bassong left to sit on the bench in favour of Dawson and Woodgate. The additional pace of Bassong could give him the edge over Daws, but that would surely depend on the new boys fitness.

Despite some disappointing results in recent weeks and three league wins in eight since the loss of Luka Modric. The truth is, that despite not playing very well, we have battled ten points from those games, which included playing the best three teams in the country (two away). Would we have done this prior to Harry coming in, is up for debate, but what is indisputable is that getting points when not playing well, has to be a positive, especially when others around you are also struggling.

What is important, is for Spurs be play with the freedom of early in the season and appear to be enjoying their football. This hasn`t been the case in recent weeks, for whatever reason, but this could be an opportunity to play to our strengths against a side who are trying to play an open and attractive style Perhaps this is a game where we can expect a straight fight between two sides playing 4-4-2, which hasn`t been the case as we have seemingly looked to match the other side`s formation and bolster our central midfield, at the detriment of our own game.

I don`t believe that Wigan will win for the first time at WHL, though they are certainly capable of springing a shock, as Villa and Chelsea know very well. I have a sneaking suspicion that Spurs will find some form and get a decent win here and a result that may flatter, but look good on paper. I will go with a 3-1 home win and go with a couple from Robbie Keane with a stiff two fingers towards the French border.

My team for tomorrow would be: Gomes, Corluka, Woodgate, Bassong (Dawson), Ekotto, Lennon, Palacios, Jenas, Kranjcar, Keane and Defoe. An unlucky drop out for Hudd, but I wouldn`t be disappointed to see him in, instead of JJ, as long as we play with a team playing to our strengths, rather than look to counter the opposition...

With TWO Frenchies in our team (Zog and Diame) I think Keane will have more heartache tomorrow, 1-1
worbo
Gotta be 4-1 or 3-1 Defoo :) Unlucky Keano on Not getting throughh (Y)
spurs4evaa
Worbo I dont think you will be far off although I really hope you are! I'm going to go for a tight 2-1 win against a good resilient wigan performance. I jonly hope we put on a decent display after a below par period. In an ideal world we will produce an electrifying display and win 5-1! :-)
TornadoYid
I don't know worbo maybe Keane will take comfort in the fact that Zog and Diame aren't going to the World Cup either ;) haha. As for who wins, well it depends from both parties which team turns up. Wigan have the ability to beat Chelsea but get royally butt fecked by Pompey. We, on the other hand can play silky attractive football and beat teams by 4 or 5 goals, or we can throw the kitchen sink at Stoke and come away with nothing. Really looking forward to it though, Wigan play how football's meant to be played. Should be a good game, COYS!
bernio3000
I hope Harry drops Crouch and plays Keane upfront instead of wide on the left because Kranjcar really deserves to start. He changed the game against sunderland after coming on.Some tough decisions for harry. Bassong has to start ahead of Dawson.A tough call between JJ and Hudd. I think Lennon's return will give us the needed attacking ammunition to win the game. I will also go for a 3-1 scoreline with a goal each for Defoe, Kranjcar and Keane.
Yid_from_India
Well the *********sacrosstheway lost to Sunderland so im very chuffed at our result against them. Spot on team selection Ox but im actually hoping for Hutton or Naughton to get some game time today. Cheeky dig at International football hey ox!How many pints u have last night ox, so many mistakes in ur article...;)
Mix26
Results this weekend have really gone our way again so this is a real opportunity to take advantage - it is an absolute must win, as we have villa away next week and on recent form thats a hard one to predict. I think we must play Krank and two strikers (defoe and keane for me, so that we keep the ball down and try to outplay wigan not outjump them), in which case I would opt for JJ over Hudd. A midfield including Krank, Lennon and Hudd doesnt have enough defensive capability for my liking. One interesting stat I read somewhere yesterday is that we have conceded more goals to opposition midfielders this season than any other team - maybe I'm being harsh but that implies to me that when Hud plays we have a soft centre. I would bring him on as a sub to give Wilson a rest oif we are winning comfortably, or if we are behind and desperate to liven things up.
suspiciousminds
IF HE STARTS 3 STRIKERS AGAIN IL HAVE A SEIZURE
HuddersfieldYiddo
these next five games are massive, we have wigan and wolves at home which need to be 6 points, we have everton and villa away in a row then Citeh at home, after that theres three very winable games of blackburn fulham and west ham, its not all or nothing but a very important part of the season for us.
liamyid
Liamyid the games against villa, citeh and the toffees are all very unpredictable - we know we are clearly weaker than the current top three and that we are clearly stronger than the likes of hull but those three games could/should be close and will collectively tell us whether the current squad (in Mod's absence) have any chance of qualifying for the CL. A good win against Wigan will put us in good stead whereas another performance like Sunderland would have me worried.
suspiciousminds
A win at home to Wigan, is a complete must. Although our level of football has dropped slightly, we have been well and truly blessed by results going our way. With a win today, we will go 3 points above 5th (Villa), with our next game being away to Villa, so this will allow a set-back there (not wishing it) and will also make Citys game in hand, count for nothing. A win would mean, that we are taking full advantage of the poor results of teams around us, and give us a slight edge. We are a third of the way through the season, and the time between now and christmas is the most vital to all clubs, top and bottom. This is the peiod where gaps are going to start forming, and it will be easier to drift away and harder to catch up. Usually, in most seasons, the top four have broken away just before Jan and a team at the bottom is far behind and stays there. I really would like to see us win today, along with beating Villa and City, so when 2010 starts, we have some room for error, if needed, and really make a gap between 4th and 5th place (ofcourse, with us in 4th). COME ON YOU SPURS!!!!!! This is as good a chance as any!!!!!
Machineguncupid
Have to confess Mix, that I was mid session and that isnt an ideal time to write ;-)
oxfordspur
lol thought so ox ;)
Mix26
4-0 win, 3 points clear of villa, 4 of vity, 5 of liverpool! cheers
j dog!
I think we may come unstuck away at Villa, Everton have to come good at some stage and City are so hard to beat. I really cant see us getting anymore than 3 points in those 2/3 games. This is why today is so vital. 3points today and then we can afford a defeat of two in them very tricky games. Lose and our season could easily go south.
HuddersfieldYiddo
2-0, COYS!
yidinchina
Harry plays a 4-4-2 with Krankjar on left and i think we will should win. My team would be Woodgate and Dawson Jenas and Palacios and defoe and Keane. The rest picks itself in a 4-4-2.
asherthesmasher
erm asher what about lennon are u sure
j dog!
Gomes, Corluka, Woody, Bassong, BAE, Lennon, Palacios, THudd, Krancjar, Defoe, Keane.
TornadoYid
I put a message on the"cosy chat with Wigan" thread, that i wrote at about 4.40 yesterday, just before Villa equalised, and i said i see no reason why we can't finish 4th this season. Not that we WILL but we CAN! Not sure why people think Villa are so great! So they demolished Bolton last time out, but by all accounts were incredibly poor yesterday at Burnley and were lucky! Everton are no where near considering at the moment, they have so many injuries and i feel for them a bit, but that is a game we can win, make no bones about that. City! City could be there for the taking, they are a mess! Burnley have been atrocious away from home getting tanked by 4 or 5 EVERY GAME! And City draw 3-3! Their ability to defend is laughable and i see no reason why we can't beat them, especially as this will be before January and they open there substantial chequebook! This is all dependent on us re-capturing the early season form, even the way we played against Chelsea and Man Utd would have easily resulted in a win against any of Villa, Everton or Man City! If we play like we did against Arsenal or Sunderland then we could lose all three, but i am fairly confident that we are better than all three, regardless of the players City have, we have a better TEAM and far better manager (really don't rate Hughes at all) COYS!!!!!!!!!!!
Jabberyid
must admit i think Lescott is an abysmal defender. He made his name in a good Everton dide, but only really because he scored alot. Defensivley hes average at best, and 20m or whatever City paid for him is a joke
HuddersfieldYiddo
Think this could be a very entertaining game, given that Wigan will try to play - I would opt for Thudd for this one, as the style of game should suit him. As for who to play with Defoe, not too fussed, I got a feeling either Crouch or Keane will do the business today - assuming we have Lennon & Kranjcar on the flanks. Results keep going our way - 3 points going into the Villa game next week COYS
DJW
HuddersfieldYiddo, i agree 100%. it makes me laugh to think that City payed in excess of 20 million for him while we paid just under 9 million for Bassong who in my opinion is a better defender.
Yid_from_India
I dont think Lescott is terrible but Everton got the better end of that deal for sure.
Himwhatwhats
Wigan have returned 14 points from 12 games played. Based on this, and the fact that we are at home, mean that this must be 3 points, no excuses, what ifs, or maybees. If we have ambitions to finish top 4,5,6 then we must win these home games, it is as simple as that. Wigan try to play football so we wont be able to use the negativety excuse as we did against Stoke. There must be no more slip-ups against lower half teams at home.
Frank
Thats what i said Frank, i think we have to look at winning all home games now. If we turn everyone over at home it could give us room to drop a few points away.
Himwhatwhats
Personally I think we have all seen enough to know that Keane cannot play LM so harry has to stop accommodating and play his best 11 in their positions, it's time to stop having favourites. If Harry feels Keane deservesa starting place it has to be in attack and he has to decide who partners him whether he starts with keane and defoe or Keane and crouch or keane and Pav or drops keane and sticks with crouch and defoe or tries defoe and Pav I really don't care as long as he doesn't play players out of position just to accommodate. On recent perfomances defoe and Crouch imo but I also think we don'tplay such good football when crouch plays but that's not Crouch's fault. I thinki Pav is on his way and is out of the equation which is a shame as I think he deserved more starts especially when Keane has been poor but I think the situation ith pav has got worse and can't see Harry playing him. If harry starts with keane and defoe that's ok, as although I don'tthink they have a partnership both are capable of sneaking a goal and if it isn'tworking bring Crouch on. If Harry plays 3 strikers to accommodate I will not be happy and if I was Kranckjar I would be very unhappy if keane plays left again and Kranckjar doesn't start. My team would be Gomes, Corluka, Dawson or Bassong don'tmind which one, Woody, BAE, Kranckjar, Palacios, JJ or Hudd again don't mind, lennon and defoe, Keane or crouch don't mind. can't predict this one until I see the team.
loz
Results definately went our way yesterday and we need to take advantage of this and make sure we get three points. Weshould win all our home games except for the top four and then we should be looking to take points from them at home if we are looking to improve.
loz
The thing that concerns me is that it would be very Spursesque to throw away the potential advantage we have on our rivals. If we're to grow as a club we have to win games like these so we can push ahead. It can be quite demotivating for people like Liverpool if they look at the table and they're 5 points behind a Champions League spot.
bernio3000
Defoe and Crouch up front in a 4-4-2 line up. Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice :-)
TornadoYid
Harry has done the right thing and has picked a good team to start and hasn't accommodated players. He has chosen dawson over bassong which is justifyable due to bassong just recovering from injury. He has chosen Hudd over JJ which is acceptable, there's not much between them, both have faults and both have different attributes. Crouch keepshis place over Keane and that is sensible as Keane hasn't been on form and deserves to be dropped and made to realise he has to up his game and also after international duty his head may well be elsewhere, can be a good impact sub imo if Crouch and Defoe don'tdo the business. With Kranckjar back in that is best option at the moment to cover Modric, he has done ok and he is better than Keane on the left. So I'm happy with the starting line up and so happy to see Lennon back. When Modric is back I would like to see Kranckjar pushing for a CM spot if we don't buy anyone better in the Jan window. On this team I predict a win today but if we don'tget of to a good start it may well be closer than we think!
loz
I was hoping Bassong and JJ woud start. Also i think crouch playing might work against us as we will hoist it long and give the ball away a lot and wigan dont give the ball back easily aswell. So it might be frustrating at times for us today
Yid_from_India
Yid_from_india, Bassong may well not be 100% due to just getting back from injury and Dawson hasn't let us down. Hudd over JJ is probably the closest call Harry has had to make and I think he may well have gone for Hudd due to being at home just to spread the ball a bit and hold back a little in the middle as Kranckjar goes more forward and so does Lennon! Good line up though.
loz
An early goal will make it so much easier. Hopefully defoe gets an early chance and bangs it in.

I am enjoying the game on TV back in Norway:) But if the iraq link is breaking away very often, u should enter the site via something called ultrareach/ultrasurf..... http://www.ultrareach.com/download_en.htm That should solve your problems...

Defoe and Kranjcar both been good first half....! Shows how important good players out wide means....
NorwaySpurs
Good fisrt half but would've like a 2nd goal. Did let Wigan back in the game in the last 15 mins. Hopefully start the 2nd half the same as the 1st.
crazyspur

Thanks for the link Irish. Pity it's like trying to endure a visual representation of a Gareth Gates sentence...
coopsieyid
Need to kill it off. Lennon's proving how much we've missed him, he's looked fantastic. Defoe looks very sharp, very very sharp. Been so unlucky and Kirkland has kept Wigan in this one. Huddlestone also went very close. Can't see anything other than a win the way the first half went but at 1-0 stranger things have happened!
bernio3000
Here fellas (and Loz), lets see if this one works? http://www.tv2t.com/watch/Live/1500_GMT_English_Premier_League_-_Tottenham_Hotspur_vs_Wigan_Athletic/flash

The link I put up is working perfect
coopsieyid
Defoe looks like he has the beating of the whole wigan defence and i would not be suprised to see him hot a hatrick in the second half but we need to up the tempo and put the pressure on. Then again we could hit the woodwork and Kirkland have one of those games and we could get suckered.

HR did the right thing today. He picked the perfect line up 6-1? i mean we have played so well it could be 10 or 12 to 1. There goal was a handball our defense didnt really slip up much and our attack was so balanced from both sides and even middle with hudd over jenas i like that. We played a perfect game today something we have not done since the early part of the season
Andyflag679
442 from now on pls ....
123spurs
Oh well, we'll have to settle for that then i guess.
Himwhatwhats
unFRIKENbelivable!!!!! 9-1! WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the best day ever
Andyflag679
keane will never play again haha
Andyflag679
best game i have ever seen! we need to see this result as a confirmation that we are serious. we can push on this season. villa next week? lets go and have a go! we are tottenham super tottenham!
yidinchina
WOW!!
Uskok
great game.. surely no one can have a bad word on 2days match..
s23sgn
Lets hope that we're back on form now, not just a one off. If we take that into the next couple of away games we can def pick up some points.
Himwhatwhats
Fantastic even better than the 13-1 cup replay against Crewe when I was a boy!Good half time pep talk from Harry--we we crap in first half...only joking!!
wentworth
Looks like you had a solid day at the office guys ;)
Mikey Delap
who gets MOTM....i cant give it to a single player defoe or lennon both equally deserving of it. and the team as a whole there no wrongs done here the entire team deserves it
Andyflag679
i love my club. TOTTENHAM TILL I DIE
kenfish
Enough of the Keane argument its boring. Both Keane and Defoe are quality. Personally i rate Defoe better, but its not important. Whats important is that finally Harry played our best formation and what do you know we look like Brazil. And as for Aarron Lennon....I mean just WOW. Hes unstoppable. Hes light years better than any right winger in the premiership. Walcott???? Dont make me laugh. Only SWP comes close. All this without Modric aswell. Yes boys
HuddersfieldYiddo
Just you all watch M.O.T.D 2 tonight. The ONLY thing you'll hear is how poor Wigan were. We will receive NO praise at all...
coopsieyid
"your only as good as your last win"....we be f'cking roaringly good then.

who cares if we get no praise! 9-1 lalalalalala! and they were terrible what can you say there is no argument there to lose like that is embarrassing and we played really well but they played absolutely terrible
Andyflag679
Wigan have been MAULED by a rampaging Cockerel!! 9-1! Well done boys.
LongTimeSpursFan64
that was amazing, only while watching the end i was nervous as hell as i wanted tha ball to just appear for Defoe infront of goal.
chappers
shame that handball can't retrospectively be erased so we can have the 9-0 credit we actually deserve for that.
yidinchina
I think we should also applaud players like Hudd who has done a good job and was unlucky not too score, dawson did good too but for me Woody is vital now that king is as good as finished. Cursing my luck at missing the chance to be there....grhhh!!!!
cockeril
Andy, I bloody well care.. As a Spurs supporter of 34 years, I've had enough of us NEVER getting the praise we DESERVE.. Today we were AMAZING, Wigan WEREN'T crap. Will we hear that later?. Well I very much doubt it..
coopsieyid
9-1! is that even legal??!!?!? too happy!

Died and gone to heaven!! Lennon MOTM Defoe MOTM Krancjar MOTM Huddlestone MOTM Palacios MOTM Redknapp MOTM Un-f***kin-believable!!

coopsieyid...thats what i'm thinking. All we ever get is "they wont finish in the top4"..."not good enough"..blah blah. Surely we have to get praised after that.
Himwhatwhats
Bit dissapointed with Defoe's finnishing today....should have had 7 or 8!!
MJBSpur
WOW! we played excellent.lennon defoe kranjcar too good.all our goals were superb as well.would have been a top goal if defoe put away nikos excellent through ball after he ripped melchiot. the only thing worse today then wigans defense was sharners hairdo, what the hell was he thinking.if modric played it would have been 34-1.well maybe not that much.
dwight schrute
Coopsie you just beat me too it, You just know it`s going to be Wigan were awful and my gran could of scored.. It would kill them to give us any credit.
cockeril
Get your money on spurs for the title boys! worth a punt surely, however unlikely! What are the odds on that? about 150-1?
LongTimeSpursFan64
there is no I in team
123spurs
There can be no more arguments until Modric returns. The best midfield is Kranjcar Huddlestone, Palacios, Lennon. They were all outstanding! Well done Harry for being brave enough to drop JJ. Brilliant performance!!!
geoff stern
i wonder wot harry will say in hispost match interviews..

Oh how i wish with all heart i was at the match! Absolutely superp football! So proud of us!! COYS!

MrJ70
Well chaps we know how good we were so f'ck em all. Wigan didnt play that bad its just that we played some of the best team football i've seen in ages and top top finishing. NEXT!!!!!!!!
Himwhatwhats
Perfect team selection today from Harry. Thought Thud an Wilson were back on top form dominating that midfield. Lennon and Defoe were sublime. To think I very nearly missed watching this one today! :-) :-) :-)
MJBSpur
by the way.. o'hara is getting great comments in the stoke portsmouth match..
s23sgn
the difference of playing a 442 with the players in there positions. we have perfect combo up with crouch and defoe linking up front. we can go to air with crouch and defoe is speed makes great runs with lennon providing great crosses today and niko with some good through balls...even palacios had a great thru ball to defoe. please HR you did so well i dont mind keane but play him up front and not anywhere else we looked fantastic today they didnt know if lennon was going to blaze them or kranjcar cut in and provide a good pass. hudd had some great balls aswell i mean there wasnt a player who played slightly bad everyone deserves a 10/10.
Andyflag679
Unbelievable! and we did it without Modric!! Bring on the Villa.
Officer X
so did a couple of the youngsters out on loan yesterday.
Himwhatwhats
Oh my god. That was probably the best match ive ever seen. Perfect. Lennon has proved again that he really is the best winger in the premiership. Defoe was absolutely magnificent. I havent seen a more natural goalscorer in the premiership this year. And how the hell did we get krancjar for 2 million? The guy is absolute class. That was just a breathtaking performance. Holy ***** 9-1...
laneno14
Thats what i'm saying andy...some of the best TEAM football i've seen in ages. Everyone knew what they and teammates were doing and were comfortable with it.
Himwhatwhats
oh BTW i cant wait for FIFA 10 updates on form everyone has to be up after this! its going to be a good week haha
Andyflag679
8 goals in 1 half must be some sort of record, Never mind Keane what must Pav be thinking LMAO!!!!
cockeril
Ridiculous LOL can't really ask for more
kernowboy71
Wigan didn't deserve the scoreline, that's football, great day for us. Kudos to 'Arry and the boys utterly brilliant second half performance. Only fault was the handball not being given by the ref.
Audere est Facere
i am just excited that all these guys are doing so well....lennon crouch and defoe at the world cup its going to be fun to watch them play man very fun. FFS it was lennons first game back comes in with 3 assists and a goal!!! what a comeback right. I really truly hope we can keep this going against villa because that is a game we must get at worst a tie to be a top 4 team there is no dropping points against them it would be a huge slip up
Andyflag679
Villa ia a massive game we win we go 6 points clear we lose and we are level. Our defence and fullbacks will be test more that is for sure. Harry must stick to 4-4-2 and the same team.
cockeril
Bring on the Villans. If we play even a quarter as well as we did today, we will kill 'em. LOL Best day ever!!
MrJ70
Even the Yanks would of liked this one 10 goals, :>D
cockeril
honestly when we are healthy with modric back...WTF is HR going to do about CM he is going to have it rough when we have so many great midfielders right now hudd niko jenas maybe even put modric theres a dilema for us
Andyflag679
Andyflag679, spot on mate! 4-4-2 with that awesome starting midfield all the way!!!
geoff stern
not bad ive seen better LOL.
jljyid
Modric to come as well... Wow!!!
geoff stern
LENNON, WILSON, NIKO, MODDERS. That would be my midfield
jljyid
its just a beautiful thing to have a bittersweet problem of which players to play when all is healthy because we have that kind of quality...
Andyflag679
jljyid that would be my midfield too - though I would probably have to toss a coin between Niko and Thudd. That would be my midfield 4 to play any team at the Lane. Away from home I would probably use Jenas a bit more in place of Hudd/Niko. Lennon, Wilson & Modders pick themselves.
TornadoYid
Hey where is Scottspur? Can't wait to hear his comments lol!
TornadoYid
Whoa, whoa dont get carried away fellas. Anyone would think you lot won the league! You put in 9 past a static wigan defence, which though by no means an easy task, was made rather easy by some shocking defending, previously never seen in the Premier League level. Good win, but you'll get 3 points out of them, that's it. And I still maintain Modric's crap, so maybe that's why you lot won 9-1 without him. :o)
JT_daniel
Why oh why did I decide against swapping Drogba for Defoe in by dream team this weekend!? Curses! lol
MJBSpur
Ah, keep him on, MJB. The Drogs has decided to score a hattrick against Arsenal next sunday and has privately informed me.
JT_daniel
MJB I put Defoe in and made him my captain haha!!!!!! Iv also got Lennon in there too - my day just gets better and better!!! :-)
TornadoYid
lol I'm only kidding, I'm not raving- honest! :-)
JT_daniel
Thts 60 points off defoe alone!!! woooo hooooo
TornadoYid
Damn you Tornado!! ;-)
MJBSpur
so much better without keane dont care what you say! kranjar is different gear!!!! lenon and defoe nailed on for SA!!! and without super modric aswel haha! taking the p***!!! champions leaguee!!!!!
j dog!
What do you have to do to get a 10/10 rating on sky play for the big four? 5 goals and you still only get 9/10. defoe and Lennon were 10/10 today and wilson, Kranj and Hudd were 9`s. Can`t wait for MOTD2..........
cockeril
lol just looked at that now cockeril! Surely any player who scores 5 in a single game (and gets an assist) should be rated 10/10 - surely??? Not that anyone cares Lol.
TornadoYid
regardless of the score i just feel so incredibly proud of my club and the team tonight.
jinkin jimmy dimmock
From a Swansea fan, thank you for tearing a new one on the team who knicked our whole management team and a few players to boot. Amazing scoreline, good luck for the rest of this season.
Originalxor
Modric is awesome. So good on the ball, it so evident how important he is to our side, although Niko is doing great filling in for him. My first XI midfield would still be Modric, JJ, Wilson and Lennon. At home against weaker sides maybe put Niko in for JJ. Against the top sides playing both Niko & Luka is a risk.
HuddersfieldYiddo
i agree huddersfiled. as much as i like niko im still not sure on him tracking back defensively even though he has done well recently i wouldnt be to sure on him in CM and tracking back but on creativity he brings us more then jj or hudd and it would still be risky. we will have to see how it goes when it comes around and hopefully we can stay healthy
Andyflag679
Agree with you both - thats why I would play JJ instead of him in away games cos he tracks back and has a fantastic engine. Im just buzzin after today - the spark has been reignited!!!! COYS
TornadoYid
I don't often give credit to another team, but I just wanted to say credit where credit is due, well done - a superb performance. Chris, a Villa fan, West Mids
PiperUK
Did you realise that te credit must go to me. Got in from work and switched on the radio at the start of the second half to hear we were 1-0, then it all started to change...enough said(?)

Bloody amazing, What a game, best day ever. So proud of the spurs boys, everyone played very well. Kranjcar was great, huddlestone worked hard along with palacios, defoe on fire. What a game. Bentley free kick was superb. spurs have been threatening to do this to a team all season. Good on ya lads
ohwellnextseason
Tornado/huddersfield, I don't want to start the whole JJ talk again but every one of our best performances this season have been with Wilson and Thud in the middle. When JJ plays we don't dominate in there. Granted Thud doesn't seem to do it against the top 4 in which case maybe Modders or Kruncjar should play in there instead but against all other opposition I'd stick with Thud and Wilson. For me JJ has got to put in some consistent performances from the bench before he's earnt the right to displace Thud.

Anyway awesome performance today :D :D so those starting 11 have picked themselves for the villa game in my opinion.
MJBSpur
jT dANIEL FoFF with Modric on it would have been probably a few more but was great team performance jtdaniel your team sux
Uskok
Gotta be impressed boys...there's no arguing with them stats. Well done
hammersmithblue
Great day and well deserved too. I know what I'll be watching over and over again this week! Defoe and Lennon different class. Kranjcar great game too. He's a must for home games, especially against teams that want to come and play, but if it's tight and teams are pressing us I'd still use him off the bench when there's more space as teams tire second half. That's why we looked so much better against Sunderland once he'd come on. Sometimes you have to graft for it. Today though was just about getting cream, cream and more cream! COYS!

9 bloody 1!!! that wont happen again in out lifetime in the prem
asherthesmasher
@Tornado - I'm here. As I've been saying for ages, Keane and Jenas must be dropped. Finally Redknapp has the courage to do it and look what happens. There is no doubt that I should be the boss. I'm also glad to see that some on here understand that when Modric is back, the midfield must be Modric, Kranjcar, Palacios, Lennon. Kranjcar and Modric will cause havoc swapping in and out on the left and centre. And with Lennon on the right we'll be nigh on unplayable. Leave Palacios to protect the defence. Kranjcar was pure class today and although big Tom had a good game, there just isn't enough room for him when all are fit. What can you say about Defoe and Lennon today? Simply perfect. Keep Jenas and Keane on the bench and we've got a good chance of CL footy.
Scottspur
Sorry folks but Hudd is a must but Krancjar is a great asset and with the others provides great cover when injury, loss of form or tactics dictate. The best of Hudd is till to come
Forever Spurs
my son was born tuesday, got his first spurs top wednesday, the scum lost, results all went our way.watched game online with my son flynn on my lap today, does life get any better????????????????????????????
macyid
Soooo disappointed. We should have had 5 in the first half.Krancjar is a gem...he can play football and has a brain.Yep, our midfield could be Lennon,Palacios,Modric and Krancjar with Hudd ,Jenas and Keane ready to come on what a bench. But it was Harry's ranting at half time that produced the result...we were not good enough first half!!!!!!
wentworth
I see that started debate about how will look Spurs midfield when Modric comes back. Well here are few of my thoughts about it. For several years Modric and Kranjcar were perfecting how to play together in Croatian national team. And even better, they done it under the guidance of Robert Prosinecki, real midfield genius, where they improved significantly their level of play. So, Spurs will fortunately be able to use this situation, and we shall hopefully be able to see it soon, if there will not be injuries and if Modric will not be sold for some big money in January. It's true that they play on similar positions, but in a quite different way. And as someone noted here, they are able to interchange positions and create chaos in defense. While on the other side they are able to combine and hold the ball and that way dominate the midfield. Actually, I don't remember Croatia way ever outplayed when they were both in a team (please note that in this world cup qualifications in first match with England, Kranjcar didn't played since he was injured, while in second Modric was missing. Also, add to that that Prosinecki was missing, which was also very important factor, especially for Croatian midfield) In any case, it's exactly as one reporter once said, it is evident that they are best when they play together. So, you can expect even better Modric and better Kranjcar when they will play together.
neno
One more note. I understand that there are other good and ambitious players, like Hudd and JJ. If spurs want such players to be there (and there will be big need for them, since always is somebody injured or can't play for some reason), Harry will have to implement squad rotation. It will be wise move, but as I said, Kranjcar and Modric should get a chance to play together and show what they are able to do then. I would certainly play them against a top 4 (or 3 now?), and will look forward to see how they will cope with it. It would be fun to look, that's for sure.
neno
MJB i agree our best performances have been with Thudd. Especially at home he really can boss things. But also our worst performances (Arsenal, Chelsea, Man Utd, Sunderland, Pompy) were with Big Tom looking horribly slow and out of his depth. Against weak sides Tom looks great but you have to admit hes often found wanting against good opposition. I rate Tom as a better player than JJ but he needs to improve against top sides, and i just wish he was faster. Hes like an Oil tanker turning sometimes.
HuddersfieldYiddo
Good man neno, another one who knows his stuff.
Scottspur
285 comments and MoD 2 still to come.Should easily break the 300 barrier.
wentworth
Whoops, I got my 1-1 prediction wrong, just missed 8 off, anybody got any rope?
worbo
I have never been a fan of Hudd. He has made his way to be a first choice infront of JJ for me. Hudd is improving his consistency. The way i see it, if Hudd can play cm then Krankjar may be able to.. Both slow and lack mobility but Hudd is more so. I dont see Modric playing Center midfield. We would miss Hudds passing range but overall i think Krankjar is better and more mobile. He is big and should be able to put his foot in. When Modric comes back i can obly see Hudd making way or else it will be Krankjar on the bench.
asherthesmasher
Hope you're going to hang your back four and not yourself worbo!
bernio3000
unbelievable! best performance i have ever seen from a spurs team! this is the reason we pay £700-odd quid for the season ticket lol!! we scored 9 could have ad 15! defoe got 5 could have had 8.....i feel sorry for chris kirkland (well, i am sure i would if i wasnt in such a good mood)

Dawn we saw the Old Palacios playing today, he was awesome He was really good today man. The pass for defoe was world class too!
anggelo
Defoe ..great goals.Lennon ...great runs. But undoubtedly my Man of the Match....Nico Krancjar...sublime skills, super passes, quick feet, always available, good brain, great entertainment and scored the best goal. That is what really made the difference. We must accommodate him when Moddy is back.
wentworth
worbo sorry mate i still remember the newcastle score when gerry was in charge of us and it still stings. but its really good to be a spurs supporter today. the media have startded putting us down already saying defoe only scores against the so called lesser teams. have these guys got selective memories or are they just *****s im sure defoe banged in an overhead kick against utd
jljyid
wentworth... kranjcar made a huge difference he opens up lennon and lennon frees him up as well but you cant take that MOM away from Defoe who scored 5 goals! you dont see that everyday or even year....id say defoe deserves it but lennon and kranjcar tied for second
Andyflag679
as for lennon him and corluka are so good on the right this is why hutton gets no playing time.......not because charlie is this crazy good defender or amazing in attack but he gives lennon this freedom and these short passes to create great crosses like he did today and as much as we complain about BAE he gave kranjcar great freedom to attack as well today........woodgate and dawson are a must in back though
Andyflag679
Absolutely terrific result, i suppose with the strike force we have, this was going to happen to someone sooner or later. Congratulations to all concerned, especially Defoe, Lennon and Kranjcar, although its chirlish really to single out players from a fantastic all round team performance. For once we have cashed in in full on the weekends results, not only gaining points on Villa, Man City and Liverpool, but also transforming our goal difference. Well done Harry and the lads, what I would say is, when you pick the right team, you get your rewards, no names no pack drill.
Frank
Thought for a while we were going to emulate the 10 goals against Everton in the old 1st division, which I remember well.
Frank
krancjar is lookin the buy of the season o this performance. we paid pea nuts. he's a £10-15m player all day long at his age. lennon was electrifying today, we have missed him so much and if defoe gets any better at finishing i think real madrid mill come knocking soon. one of the best finishers in the world
pachna_spurs
Great performance, Defoe was great, missed a few too :), Lennon great first game back and Kranjcar was unbelievable......every player was good today!!!! Looking forward to the next game confidence will be soaring. Can't wait for Modders him and Kranjcar add Lennon and Sarge and I think we got something special....

I left my flat at 4-1 well and truely satisfied! I then followed the rest on my mobile and whilst watching the Stoke and Pompey game! It was hilarious to be honest i couldn't stop laughing! Best thing was at half time of Stoke game when Richard Keys was announcing that we were 8-1 up with the graphic on screen, and then he put his finger to his ear and said "Its actually 9 now"! and Jamie Redknapp just went " WOW"! Superb! Seen the goals a few times now and as much as Wigan were poor defensively, we just utterly ripped them apart, and Defoe was unbelievable! Its still hard to believe looking at that score line! 9 (NINE) - 1!!!!!! Every single player must take credit and the referee should get dropped for allowing an Henry-esque goal for Wigan! 9-0 would have equaled the best ever in Prem history! Still, brilliant result! Brilliant performance and we need to take that into Villa next week! I hope they are quaking in their boots! YID ARMY!!!!
Jabberyid
Hudd was awesome too spraying the ball around with some sublime passing. Kranj was awesome today and Lennon and Defoe were simply unplayable. This will never happen again in my lifetime I am sure of it as scoring 9 goals is very very difficult alone but 8 in one half will not be repeated. Love the way harry was so cool about it and not getting carried away. :)
cockeril
even dawson and bentley played very very well! and they dont get chances 2 often
attwooll9
Bentleys goal was amazing and Kranj`s was a fine finish and infact every goal was well taken and none were sitters that makes it even sweeter. I bet MON has a headache tonight and has a few sleepless nights befor the weekend.
cockeril
Of course our best performances have been with Hudd, hes been the one playing when teams have collapsed against us and should be the pick at home against lower to mid table sides - against the big boys he gets bypassed tho. Do people really think that spurs would have played much worse with Jenas in? Loving how good Kranjcar was today, means we can let modders come back slowly and make sure there's no relapse.
Joshtottenham
Yep i think we would of been worse with JJ today no doubt did you not see the passing of Hudd today Jj could only dream about making those passes. JJ has his positives but he is not a patch on Hudd with his passing and the play would of broken down more often.
cockeril
rediculously happy with this! long may it continue! i wouldnt want to be modric trying to get back into that team! our team is incredible. destroyed them. they looked like a friggin conference team! although (i do feel guilty btw!) part of me is a bit dissappointed we didnt get more! easily could have been 15-1! actually 15-0 as their goal was handball! anyway! COYS! bring on the next challenge. lennon crouch and defoe on the plane to SA and buckled in already IMO!
Simgee
i just cant turn my tv off! i need to watch every channel so i can hear if from everyone 9-1! haha u dont want this to end please dont let it be over
Andyflag679
also heard a good shout on the radio regarding formation with modders. 4-2-3-1 - midfield of hudd and wilson with niko and lennon wide and modders in the hole behind crouch. would definately give us a different look and varied attacks. the opposition would never know if we were gonna go 442 or as i this way.
Simgee
simgee, how can you even contemplate that team with no Defoe after he has just banged in 5 goals lol?!?
funsize
PALACIOS MOTM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
anggelo
I have to say re: Kranjcar that he is everything I hoped he would be and more. I think his workrate has improved ten fold since his move from Pompey, maybe because he's not a shoe in for a starting place. His skill and strength on the ball remind me of a certain Mr. Berbatov. His passing for the most part has been sublime and his delivery has been great. Not to mention the fact he's banged in a couple of goals already, he really is proving himself to be a bargain. £10m would have been a bargain at this rate. My question marks about him were that he wouldn't be bothered about tracking back or getting stuck in, but on the evidence he's shown I see no reason why Modric and himself can't fit into the same side.
bernio3000
60 mil price on defoe's head.......the sharks will start coming... i think that is a very fair price, when you consider he is one of the best finishers in world football.
lillywhites101
great game from Defoe, Lennon and Palacios. Pal was back to his best form.
jaag
totally agree bernio.what about when he chipped melchiot and then with the outside of the foot sent a great through ball to defoe.would have loved to see that one go in.i have seen the game twice now and the goals about 237 times.good times.

an not only that thudd does it with ease, he has an eye to pick the pass an the accuracy
123spurs
funsize i was just saying it would be a good way of keeping all our outstanding midfielders on the pitch and giving us a different way to line up. lets face it defoe wont score 5 every game and its always good to be vesatile. look at manure last season, they had about 3 or 4 different formations they could line up with depending on who they were playing. just gives that extra option.
Simgee
btw pompy fans who were saying niko is lazy and not prem material must be kicking themselves now! bet they'd take him over the Prince any day!
Simgee
Watched MOTD three times and going to watch it again. Awsome display and result. Lennon was outstanding and Defoe was clinical and his movement was great. Kranckjar was brilliant and Crouch was excellent as well. Palacios and Hudd had one of their best games and the defense had little to do but did what they had to do as so did Gomes. The movement and passing and workrate was immense. Can't drop any of them for next game but I expect we will come back down to earth at some point b ut I'm enjoying this display and victory and it was great to see some exciting football with everyone working for eachother. Defoe and Crouch were playing as a partnership, they knew were eachother were and Lennon's crossing was intellegent and with Kranky providing some creativity and Hudd popping balls all over the pitch and Palacios doing the dirty work as well as getting involved in some good build up play and the defense and GK looking solid we were class. I am so glad Keane wasn't involved so I can buy the dvd and not have to see him on it.

The only travesty for Spurs that afternoon was that David Bentley had his goal struck off & given to Kirkland as an OG. Wow, the little man done brill for us .... now all these Keane lovers cant give the he scored 4 goals for us nonsense now as JD has scored 5!!!!! in one game, HR did the best thing by dropping Keane, he got a real team effort they all dug deep and performed a class show .... Long may the pikey not play .... but I doubt it will be same 11 starting at villa next week. we cant have the pikey moaning .... he will go waffle to the papers he wasnts on to score 6 now ..... MOM Defoe for me or Lennon or Sarge or Niko or erm I do not know .. our worse performer had to be Gomes he didnt hardly touch the ball lolol. well done spurs

tottenham sowed why they are destined for a top 4 finish by thumping wigan 9-1. Jermain defoe is a fantastic player and striker and proved it with 5 deluxe goals
leeimp95
same as most fans, i can't stop watching the highlights of our monster demolition of wigan. i'll like to mention 2 observations. 1. dawson has a lovely long range pass...immense 2. so many people laying the blame to the goal at BAE's door. I watched it and saw niko stand and watch as scharner ran past and illegally score. He needs to work harder in tracking back if he is to play alongside modders when he comes back. still solid performance
