Could Barca come calling for Jermain?

The latest rumour across the Sunday media, is that Barcelona are interested in signing Jermain Defoe.

Clearly if the offer was serious, it would severely test the resolve of Defoe to stay loyal to Spurs and Harry, as there are very few opportunities to play for one of the elite sides in world football, but much would depend of his confidence that he could break into and become a regular starter in the side.

I suppose the obvious position for him would be to play the role currently occupied by Henry, but is he a player Barca would be happy to put out to grass at this stage?

One thing we know is that Jermain is happy at Spurs and has said on many occasions that he is enjoying his football and wants to remain at Tottenham for the long term, but could any player seriously resist a chance to play for the best club in Europe and perhaps the world?

Spurs would obviously demand very big money for the player and could easily expect to double the fee they paid Pompey less than a year ago, but I hope they would have the resolve to put building a squad to play Barca in the CL over profit, assuming the player was happy to stay.

Before we panic or dismiss this as rubbish, we have to assume that Jermain or any other Spurs player doing well for club and country will be on the radar of several top sides, but that doesn`t mean there will be an offer or ultimately a move. I am sure in the coming weeks we will get similar talk of Aaron Lennon moving to Madrid or Roman Pavlyuchenko joining Rotherham, but we know from past experience that 99% never happen, even if there is logic behind them.

I actually think that Jermain has that positive arrogance needed, to feel he can play for the very best and could we honestly blame him for wanting such a move, if an offer came his way? It is always something that I think we dismiss as Spurs fans, in taking player loyalty into account. Jermain may love it at Spurs, but just like you and I, he would surely want to test himself alongside the very best, I only hope he and Spurs would say a polite "No Thanks" if an offer came their way...

Good players attract this type of speculation. Paper talk!
michael.thfc
lets hope so Michael, and we know there will be plenty more of it in the comming weeks. One point that I havent read anywhere else is that some of our players may well attract bids from clubs still in europe as none of them are cup tied.
oxfordspur
He would be awesome for Barca. I think he would easily be top goalscorer in la liga with the service he would get from messi et al. Just papertalk though it will never happen.
TornadoYid
barca could also offer him twice his salery, nice weather and a huge tax reduction on what he gets here. to be honest he would be mad not to join if they were interested but lets hope he's mad
pachna_spurs
we need to keep him but it wouldn't happen this year anyway, doesn't make sense to move when you're on top of your game playing regular football in a world cup year. What if he gets frozen out...
mossy
Mossy is right he could not risk it this particular season so everyone stop panicking. He is however the closest thing to the player(Etto)who was pivotal to how good they were last year. The swap with inter was a mistake so I could see why they would want him.
spurdon
A message to Daniel Levy. For the first time in your reign as Chairmen of Tottenham Foottball Club you have officially given one of your coaches the opportunity to create and pick his own team without interference from upstairs. Harry has re payed you by creating a very entertaining team that has all the potential to win trophy's and compete in the Champions League. During the January transfer window and again next summer it is clear that many of the big guns will be making approaches for our top players as a result of their excellent form. Defoe, Palacios, Lennon, Huddlestone etc etc will all now be receiving a lot of attention from the likes of wise old Fergie and the big guns of Europe. Big offers will obviously be made for these players and I ask you Mr Levy not to sale any of Harry's prize assets in return for cash profits! Chelsea have managed to keep their top players for many years now which has been the key to their success. Be strong Mr Levy and resist these tempting offers. This will be the difference between success and failure ON THE PITCH!!!
geoff stern
Can they afford £70m? Why would we accept anything less! Its of course probably *********!!
Jabberyid
Why would we at least expect to "double what we paid Pompey"! He's scored 11 goals in the Prem this season and is probably europes leading scorer (i don't know this) or at least the sharpest striker in europe, alongside Rooney! Sorry if Ibrahimovic is worth 60m euros, is at least worth that!
Jabberyid
jabber, firstly we dont need to sell & he is under a long contract, putting us in the driving seat (unless he were to demand a move). We also have to consider his England form and that has greatly improved his status in the game. If you were Spurs would you even answer back to an offer of 20m? It would take strong money for Spurs to consider selling and we all know strikers are always at a premium.
oxfordspur
It's not about the selling and asking price, but what would Barcelona, or others, offer him as wages!!! That's the way to turn players heads. Could we compete with with the higher wages on offer. We would have get him more personal sponsorship to compete with largest clubs in Europe. On a lighter note has anyone seen that Billy Davies is now talking about Michael Dawson as well as Gareth Bale. Is he for real, although I admire his ambition, and his taste!!!
Spur'61
Yeah, you gotta give it to Davies, cheeky f'ker. Daws aint going nowhere, he knows King ledley is on a countdown now and for me he's a shoe-in for that position. Give him a couple of seasons to iron out those lapses and we have a john terry type player here. He might not be as good as terry but he wont be far behind him. The guy would put his head in the way of a boulder if it kept the ball out of our net, i love the guy.
Himwhatwhats
our top players will always get linked to other clubs - this happens when we are mid table, so it will certainly happen when we are amongst the top 4. Its unavoidable - regardless of whether there is any truth in it or not. Look at it this way, if we didnt have these rumours about our players, it would indicate that we didnt have a good team - cant have it both ways.
DJW
Is it realy worth worrying about right now? Lets get into CL and go from there.
asherthesmasher
I think its worth worrying about, look what happened with Berba' and Keane after they had a good season. We were left well short going into the next, ok berba' was kind of in the post as we knew he wanted out but keane, that hit me from nowhere.
Himwhatwhats
It is gonna fckn happen this season is it! If we make CL then our credentials go up big time as well as being able to pay higher saleries..i we dont make CL then i worry.
asherthesmasher
he wont go, he loves his wags to much, he only goes for the stupid ex-big brother girls like danielle, chantelle and imogen, who would ****** all the talentless wags if he went spain???
liamyid
O'Hara would :)
DJW
:)
Himwhatwhats
Cant remember the last time i wanted chelsea to win.
Himwhatwhats
Defoe isn't a £70m player ... £20m max. He's great at bullying poor defenders / reserves only to disappear and be nullified against the best defences. He would not be that difficult to replace.
kernowboy71
Sell him, Keane's better anyway ;-).....
coopsieyid
I think gooners are going to beat chelski today
DJW
hi kernow71 i have missed your dolcet negativity - welocome back. what do you think? HR to be sacked?
kernowspurcoach
Damn it Kernowboy, I thought I'd easily made the most stupid comment on this story, then you come along... You never fail to amaze me with your constant, total crap... Man Utd, Holland etc. Are they not regarded as teams with the best defences?. Why didn't you have anything to say about the little fella last week?..
coopsieyid
kernowspurscoach, does it sicken you that HE shares half of your name?. AND do you live in Cornwall mate? Or are you from there and live elsewhere?.
coopsieyid
Listen, Kernoboy is one of those that thinks he is smarter than everybody else. He may very well be academically smart but somewhere in all those books he left behing any common sense he may of had. Defoe isnt a 60m+ player. Those king of players are few and far between. Any top striker can find it difficult against the best defences and vice virsa. I believe that Dofoe can score out of nothing against any defence. He will convert more chances than anyone else in the prem IMO.
asherthesmasher
i think we should sell Defoe and replace him with Dean Ashton, what do you reckon KB?
HuddersfieldYiddo
0-2 to the chelski .... KB71, I heard HR was looking at doing a deal with notts county ... we were going to give them 25 mill plus defoe for lee hughes good deal ???
E17YID
No keep the squad togther if there was any truth in the rumour in the first place .
Uskok
kerno can u just go support arsenal please? my mum knows more about football than you! you are simply an idiot.....how often do u go to white hart lane????
stuboi10
haha damn, it seems you lot shut him up. but seriously, save the insults for keane KB71. just kidding. talking ***** about defoe right after he got 5 in one game is stupid tho
attwooll9
Xavi And Yaya Toure and you have a deal. I would even take 30-40 million straight cash and you all know Levy will! I doubt he is good enough for them to be honest and It won`t happen.
cockeril
he is good enough the problem is he wont take it past the opposing team eight times then chip it up and bicycle kick it into the top corner from 40yds every week. kb71 is a flid is there anyway to get him banned i get more sense from my socks
jljyid
Pure speculation. Being a notorical goalscorer is not good enough for Barca. (Hence the Eto'o move). He scored goals for fun, but didn't entertain much. Defoe is lethal, but not an entertainer.
NorwaySpurs
it does sicken me that he is a Kernowboy - i even considered he was possibly my best mate from cornwall who hates spurs. I do live else where now and go home 2 -3 times a year but have always been a yid from the age of about 5 as they were the first team i ever went and saw. Went to WHL with a spurs supporter family friend and caught the bug instant. I don't know what KB71 gets his ideas from but he is just so negative all the time.
kernowspurcoach
Can't see it happening but the longer our good form continues we'll have to cope with more and more of this. we've got some very good players and there are clubs out there who would love to there hands on Luka, lennon, Defoe, Gomes, Palacios and so the list goes on. The best way of keeping players it to be succesful.
jinkin jimmy dimmock
If we want to be taken seriously we need to ditch this imiage of a club that sells it's best players for profits, and is happy to well in mid table like Villa, Everton, etc.. like us they all want it but how badly. This is as close as were likely to get, so IMO we should be thinking about strengthening our squad, staying above the pikeys, and preparing to embrace CL football for the first time. IF there's any truth politely tell the to FFAAARRRKKKAAARRRFFFF !
YidEdy
Out of interest KB71, if he's so easy to replace, just who would you replace him with. Don't include le'arse players we wouldn't welcome anyone from your team.
YidEdy
I have always said that Defoe was a flat track bully which he is. He is outstanding against lower league teams or in friendlies but against the very top teams he has always been easily contained. He scored against ManU and then disappeared for 80mins. He scored against the 9th Dutch CB pairing. If we ever want to be consistent Champions League contenders we need a striker who will constantly be a threat to them. The link to Barca is pure tabloid nonsense because he is not good enough.
kernowboy71
And low and behold, the troll scum crawl out from under the stones to offer abuse against anyone who might have a different opinion from them. Defoe for £70m, swap him for Xavi is the biggest load of ignorant nonsense ever spouted on this site. It sickens me that KernowSpursCoach allegedly comes from
kernowboy71
.....Cornwall - personally his comments on this article would suggest he was from Devon. You are a liar as you know I have never once called for Redknapp to be sacked.
kernowboy71
Stuboi10, you are the idiot if you think fans change their lifelong allegiance, but maybe then you are not a genuine fan so would probably not find it that difficult.
kernowboy71
jljyid, based on your pathetic comment, it would appear I lose more brain cells every time I take a dump than you have ever been blessed with. Now ask mummy to wipe away that drool from the corner of your mouth.
kernowboy71
Of course Asher I have no common sense .... like I had no common sense saying we should sack Ramos four months before all bar three (Me, Frank and Wentworth) of you cottoned on to the idea he was in fact a charlatan. Defoe isn't too easily dealt with by defences better than Wigan. He lacks height. His one asset is pace but that can be easily dealt with by defending deep. You all say five goals against a demoralised Wigan in the second half, but he spurned countless opportunities in the first. Against the best of teams you only get one or two chances the entire game. He is the Andy Cole of the 21st century - a decent enough Premiership striker, but certainly not world class and if someone wants to make a silly bid for him, then the club should bite their hands off for it.
kernowboy71
And as for the Dean Ashton comment, I was reading an interview with Fabio Capello where he said of all the English strikers the one he was most excited about pairing Rooney with was Ashton. If he'd been able to have recovered from his injury, I definitely think Redknapp would have bought him. So there you are, you all know more than one of the most heralded managers of European football.
kernowboy71
And it wasn't so long ago that you were all in a queue to abuse Michael Dawson, not only wanting to sell him, but even prepared to help him pack his backs. Few of us supported him and now look, those cowards have either slunk away or developed a memory block. Funny how so people are so precious about some of their players.
kernowboy71
YidEdy = Moron
kernowboy71
Huntelaar is now out of the blocks at Milan but his wages are too high. A player we should be linked to is Andre-Pierre Gignac of Toulouse and France, who would be in the £15m range and cheaper on wages. He is a first choice striker with France, not just starting because of injuries, and will be a star at FIFA2010 at which point his fee will double. I did say last season we should try to sign Yoann Gourcuff - Bordeaux splashed out £12.5m and he has now tripled in value.
kernowboy71
kb71, i'm not saying I agree or disagree with you regarding Defoe. But surely you're just as bad as these people that strongly disagree with you and subsequently abuse you by doing the very same in return? I read more than I comment on this site and have witnessed a lot of similar situations like this. You are a very very opinionated user and at times make some very good points. However, you are not always right. In this situation, I believe you actually are. He isn't good enough to play for Barca and shine, because he isn't "World Class". But he is a fantastic striker and could take us to another level (along with others) if he keeps putting the ball in the net. If we can get Modric fit again, and keep him, we could do something special. I'm not saying win the league but possibly break the big four strong hold. I believe we need a player like Defoe to do this. He isn't the creator, he puts in what is created. All i'm saying is try and get behind your team a bit more, at least when on here. This is a site to debate, I get that. But at least sometimes when we are doing well have something constructive to say. Its a stupid rumour regarding Defoe, granted. But there is no need for the subsequent beat down he received from you. We're not going to get any better than him right now.
Eemton
Well done to Chelsea today for deservedly winning 3-0 against Arsenal. It helped Tottenham, who never mind being a happy fourth are now third in the league placings. Despite the loss of Van Persie, though, I think Arsenal, though dropping points, will have enough good players to stay competitive for the length of the season.
Airwave
Well said Eemton! He does get abuse when not needed, but he does also talk some nonsense sometimes! Don't see the point in slagging each other off, save that for the Chelsea, Arsenal and Villa fans who come on here and talk crap, but he does give back just as well, and only when we haven't won! As for Defoe, he isn't worth £60m no one is! But when some players are going for stupid money without any real substance ie Ibrahimovic, why isn't Defoe worth that! And why would we accept a low amount like £20 just because Barca come knocking with large wages! We sold Berba for £30m when that was a ***** load of cash, Real and Man City have changed all that! Lescott worth £24m, do me a favour, so why isn't Defoe £40-60m! Seems reasonable to me when he has a long contract! Anyway this is paper crap, so its irrelevent!
Jabberyid
You couldnt blame him if he left. Especially if it was at the end of this season and spurs hadnt got a CL place. As long as he treats the club with respect and we get good money for him Im not gonna begrudge him the chance. Still be gutted tho.
Joshtottenham
I never said £20, I said £20m which is decent amount these days and a 25% profit. Just because Real and ManC have inflated the market, does not mean that these are the clubs who will bid for him. Clubs constantly sell, buy more cheaply and get better. The problem with Defoe is he is one-dimensional and easily contained. He has Plan A, and err, Plan A. There are other strikers out there, who we need to be constantly on the eye on.
kernowboy71
And Eemton, it is almost immeasurable the amount of cretinous mentality required to call a Spurs fan a Gooner, sugges they go support them, or call for them to be banned because they have a different opinion. Since when did this become VitalFascist?
kernowboy71
I really can't see anything in this story. Firstly Defoe would be no more than a reserve at Barcelona. He didn't like being on the bench with Keane and Berbatov forming their great partnership and I doubt he'd want to repeat that experience. He will be at his peak as a player for the next few years, a period covering the next World Cup and European Championship and will want to spend that time playing. Secondly its most unlikely Barca would offer the kind of money that would interest Spurs and Levy does not have a track record of selling players cheap.
jod
Kernoboy never has anthing positive to say and its annoys the spurs fans. This isnt a "slag off spurs site", which is why some people rightly so are calling him a gooner. I would love for him to be a gooner personaly. He certainly doesn,t act like a fan. I wonder what he does when spurs score? Does he jump up and down with delight? Or does he talk about how poor th other team were in defending?
asherthesmasher
Any player offered CL football would have to think about the offer even if he were enjoying his football and life at Spurs. If we were to get into the CL ourselves then I think he would like to stay where he knows he starts, enjoys his football, gets the ball and enjoys his life. Oh but lets not forget the sun does shine in Spain more than London!!!!
chappers
Asher, your words would carry more weight if there was a semblance of accuracy about them. I did not go overboard about us tonking Wigan as most rational people would call it a fluke. I did not criticise the team or Harry when we lost to Chelsea and Arsenal, because it is clear we are not at their level, but it is clear that some of the deluded comments by our fans bare little resemblance to reality, and were happy to lay in to the manager and team with their irrational assessment. As many fans, I have had to read the ill-informed criticism of Keane, Huddlestone, Jenas and Dawson, but many fans constantly over rate the likes of Defoe, Palacios, Gomes and indeed Modric because they offer 'youtube' performances. It is called balance, but it seems some who think this site is 'VitalFascist' where people aren't allowed to have opinions, can't accept that, and come up with the totally pathetic and moronic statement that someone who doesn't criticise the same players they do must be a Gooner. The lack of intelligence in making such a comment suggests they can only be considered special needs in terms of lower than average intelligence. How convenient it must be to call yourself a fan, yet be able to criticise a number of our players simply by jumping on a bandwagon rather than using your own eyes and brain and making your own assessment. I said Defoe was worth no where near the silly figures being suggested, and for a striker who has never scored more than 13 league goals in a season, suggesting he is and always had been a hot and cold striker, that £20m is a figure that a chairman would look at.
kernowboy71
No Kernoboy boy your just an as shole. Fans can deluded because they are passionate about there club. Somewhere deep down they probably know the truth. People can make comments coming from there heart not there head. That does not make them stupid. Please fck off our sight. I think i can speak for the most when i say, you are not welcome.
asherthesmasher
How Fascist of you Asher, to assume that because fans display passion in a different way to you, that some how that means that they are not fans. I notice you don't criticise fans how slate Huddlestone and Keane and before them Jenas and Dawson, who ironically fans are now hailing as a future captain. How pathetic of you to try to evade the censorship of swearing on this site. Dear boy, I've probably been a fan of Spurs for longer than you have been been in existence, and I have not the slightest intention of going anywhere, and I will continue to offer my own thoughts and opinons, if only to annoy nasty little wannabe Hitler's like you who would want to deny others the right to think for themselves
kernowboy71
Asher, I see you criticising Crouch, Jenas and Huddlestone on another article = HYPOCRIT!!
kernowboy71
Asher, I see you criticising Crouch, Jenas and Huddlestone on another article = HYPOCRIT!!
kernowboy71
Dofoe is a great striker, his is amongst the top scorers of the best league on the planet, first to score 5 goals in a game for 10 year,(did henry ever manage that), If he continues to score this season and does well in the world cup next year. His sale price would certainly merit at least 40 million. Berbatov was sold for 30mill, what exactly had he acheived other then 2 good seasons at spurs??! I personally think he'll play for us at least for another 2 seasons, especially if we qualify for champs league.
Tsunami
I'm fed up with this claim and counter-claim slagging off of each other. Enough guys otherwise I am definately off this site. Disgraceful.
COYS R US
Your so right KB71 it's either you or everyone else on this site that's a gooner you pr 1ck
YidEdy
YidEdy you really are completely pathetic calling a Spurs fan a gooner simply because they have a different opinion that yours. Act your age for once, rather than your shoe size.
kernowboy71
hahaha kerno......maybe you should say somthing positive for once, and how dare u say about genuwine fan to me....£700odd quid for my SEASON TICKET says otherwise, when woz the last time u went to white hart lane??? true fans are positive and support their team, not just moan about anything and everything. i am the first person to respect peoples opinions but me and everyone else has just had enough of your negativity!! plus how can u call someone pathetic and then use the phrase "act your age not your shoe size" my 12 year old nephew dont even use that! i may be wrong sometimes but u will never hear me slating players etc unnecessarily. some of the things you say are just simply ridiculous! also, coys r us, chill mate you gotta love the banter....especially against someone who aint got a clue! haha. besides dont have to worry about running into kerno at white hart lane will i lol! :)
stuboi10
Stuboi10, define 'unnecessarily' - isn't that just your opinion? And therefore surely other people are entitled to theirs. I was certainly far less negative about our results against ManU, Chelsea, and Arsenal than most fans so exactly where is this 'alleged' negativity coming from. I have been a supporter of some players like Dawson, whose contribution fans are finally respecting - maybe you should direct your comments towards those who constantly heaped abuse on him - I didn't which is a recordable fact. I have never rated Defoe, for numerous reasons previously stated, and I don't see the need to change my opinion simply because he knocks a few past a devastated Wigan. Its the goals he didn't score against Villa which I measure him by. But I don't expect to be called a Gooner, because I don't rate him and some do, like I have never called a fan on here a Gooner - which is a bit like calling someone a paedophile in my book.
kernowboy71
nah being a called paedophile is much better then being a gooner! lol. how can u not rate the premier leagues top scorer? by unnecessarily i mean when the team is playing well, just having such negative comments.....we have a growing side, many of the players are absolutely at their peak yet, ie huddlestone, dawson, bassong even modric....thats the exciting thing, their is more to come and i hate people being negative! plus being controversial is much more entertaining!
stuboi10
I will state a fact here. There are potentially 24 points to win against the top four sides. There are 90 points to win against teams outside of the top 4. Even if Defoe does not score against the top 4 sides but does against the lower league teams we are laughing. He is a quality striker who scores goals. Be it 5 against Wigan , 3 against Hull. It is more important to win against the teams outside the top 4 as there are more points available.
kernowspurcoach
If a top club came in he will now go becuase he is not automatic first choice and I think he knows he is second fiddle to Hudd and Palacios and I expect Harry to bring in another midfielder and Jj isn't stupid he will go if he gets the chance of a big move and Levy will cash in and use the money.
