The FA Cup deserves a Champions league place.

The FA Cup deserves a Champions league place.

After much thought on the matter I can only see positives in having a CL place for the FA cup winners. Over the years the FA cup has become a reserve team cup, it is at least fourth priority for teams behind League Title, CL, CL qualification or in some cases survival. The reason for this is the reward is not great enough.. channel 5 football isn't enough to satisfy most clubs.

Now before you say, well the 4th place team has deserved it over the season, which you'd be right, I'd point you to the World Cup. The WC is a cup competition, you don't play the top 19 teams in the world home and away to become World Champions? I think if your champions of the English FA Cup you deserve a 'Champions' League place. I mean 4th???? Why award mediocrity, you don't get a medal for fourth in the Olympics do you???

The other argument is that the other year Portsmouth and Millwall got to the cup final. Would we want them representing our nation in champs league football?? Well let me tell you a team like Millwall wouldn't get anywhere near a FA cup final if there was a CL place up for grabs. In the 20 years before the CL started, when the FA cup was sort after, it was won, more often than not by a team who finished in the top four anyway!!

And why not a teams like Pompey, or West ham who reached the final the other year , there a lot better than some of the rubbish in the CL at the moment. Imagine what it could do to clubs like that, the money, the players?? They have great support and would deserve it if they come through what would be a very hard cup competition. But more than that, it would give hope to so many teams. It would give the top half a realistic chance of something special come the end of the season. It's getting very boring having the same old teams every year!!

It would only be good news for the PL, if a club had the chance to qualify for CL through the FA cup, maybe teams would find it easier to keep hold of players? It would make teams in England a lot more attractive to foreign players who would think, hey they've got a shot of CL football next year, look how well they did last year in the FA cup.

You cannot get the same excitement from league football as you get from cup competition. Extra time, penalty shoot-outs, a final at Wembley!!! I mean can you imagine the games it could throw up. Spurs v Arsenal FA cup final, Arsenal have finished 2nd and qualify already, Spurs finished 6th after a good season and Liverpool finished 4th but got beaten in the semi's by Spurs..... Now that would be MASSIVE, every football fan in the country and all over the world would want to see the outcome of that, an Arsenal win and Liverpool go through, a Spurs and we would!!!! Come on, how would that feel, every year that last game of the season would give you a dream end to the year for all fans.

At the end of the day it would make the FA cup Great again, every team would want to win it and all sides would put out there strongest sides... as for fourth spot, if it's got to a point in football were 4th is seen as a massive triumph over winning a cup then footballs become a very boring sport in my opinion!

So winning 6 games is now good enough for a CL spot? Behave...

And 4th is....

Perhaps UEFA should see the logic of offering the biggest and best leagues an extra couple of places? I am completely serious here and we could offer a place to 5th place and the final to either the FA cup winners or 6th, dependant on who won the cup. The CL is already not a competition for champions and the competition would be far stronger if there were more teams from the best leagues instead of force feeding the crap from lesser nations.they still get the chance to compete, but in the prelims instead of having too many walkover games in the group stages

Liamyid - I totally agree with the whole article!

I'm with liamyid on this all the way. The CL has been a joke for far too long, CL?...nope, "Secret handshake league for the big clubs to earn more money and make the gap wider" is more like it but thats far too long to fit on the cup. If the FA cup winners went in at least they would be champions of something. Lets just hold of on it for one more season though as we'll be needing that 4th place to get in it ourselves this year :)

I have always maintained that the Champions League should be for Champions. Uefa bottled it by giving in to the big teams in the fear that they would form a breakaway league, they belittled what was a great competition, this is just taking the *****......

You can critisice the CL all you want but brush the chip off ya shoulder first! If Spurs had been in the CL for the past five years you would be all for it. I totally agree with Liam. To maintian the importance of the FA Cup make it a CL place along with the champs and then the other two places for 2nd and third (or even a play off)

back in the day sucess was judged on what u won, you would prefer to win the fa cup and finish 10th then finish 4th. now it seems clubs like arsenal, liverpool are happy with fourth where as clubs like us, villa, man city would give our left nut to finish there, I would be happier to see us go to win something and get rewarded that way.

what a laugh i had reading this article...sp*dsies always trying to find a way through....i pity you

NO, the FA Cup should never be given a Champions League place. What next? The League Cup? Or heaven forbid, the Championship winners? The Champions League should be for winners of the top league in European countries only. As in 1st place only! There's more than enough countries in Europe to cater for places, including the unseeded qualifying rounds. Justifying The FA Cup over 2nd-4th is as BS as justifying 2nd-4th.
Yid Singer
singer, the point is that if u can justify 4th then the fa cup could be justified, Im with u in thinking it should just be for champions.

The Europa Cup came from the Uefa Cup which came from the Cup Winners Cup. That's where Cup winners go and that's where they belong. I thank you...
Squiddy
Totally disagree with absolutely everything! Everything you've said is completely one sided, all geared to improve the value of the FA Cup but how much would it devalue the champions league... and to say it wouldn't is just complete blindeness!!! I'm a Spurs fan but can see no glory in qualifying for the CHAMPIONS league through the FA Cup. If it was up to me it would be the Champions only... the next 2 would qualify for the Europa League and that would be it. I already don't care about watching Liveropol Vs Debrechin (however it's spelt) I really wouldn't care (and neither would the rest of Europe) had it been West Ham instead of Liverpool. Seriously, this article is ridiculous... Europe should be harder to get into, not easier!! Now, you want an FA Cup, where teams like Millwall don't get anywhere near the final...?? You're an idiot, I'm not normally this blunt, but the magic of the FA Cup is that teams like Millwall can win it... I'm not ging to go on cos I feel embarrassed, this just looks to me that your explaining a way for Spurs to qualify for the CL because we can't do it in the league!
Dan Mac
Squiddy... The UEFA cup didn't come from the cup winners cup at all.. they ran side by side... The EUFA cup was for the 2nd and 3rd in the big leagues and 2nd in the smaller ones.!
Dan Mac
I agree, but lets wait and see if Spurs finish 4th as then I would not agree!!!!!
