Purple patch or real contenders?

I have always been a little reluctant to think Champions league and usually a draw, even at Villa Park, wouldn`t get me thinking of the big four, but if not now, when?

It is easy to consider that Villa weren`t at their best and many Spurs fans have been looking at the lack of quality or a bad day for the home side, in preference to actually considering that their showing was more about the quality of Spurs than any off day from Villa.

After going a goal down in an opening period, that Villa probably just edged, Tottenham looked to step up a gear and actually press forward and dominate territory, possession and chances. Villa may have sat too deep, but was that their decision or did we force the issue with the manner in which we played?

Aaron Lennon was not the devastating player we saw against Wigan, but he terrified Villa and in the second half forced Ashley Young deeper and deeper, more in fear than actual play. In keeping Lennon quiet, it not only lost Villa their main attacking creativity, but also allowed more space for our midfield and Hudd and Kranjcar dominated the centre, with Niko looking outstanding before being replaced by Robbie Keane, who worked tirelessly for the final 20 minutes or so and covered every blade of grass.

The last two games may well be just a mini purple patch, but we are sitting nicely in third place for now. I am not really thinking beyond the 4th place and our battle with Villa, City and of course Liverpool. To me, United, Chelsea and probably Arsenal, remain a level above, although it will be interesting how our beloved neighbours cope with the loss of Van Persie until march.

A home game against City next month, could again be a CL 6 pointer and as City look ill at ease with their role of Billionaires, a win there and a much needed unbeaten run around that could really put us ahead of the opposition going into the second half of the season.

Unlike Villa of last season, I think we have the squad to maintain a consistency to the final game and if we develop a winning or at least unbeaten habit, we will look a far better and stronger side as time passes. When you consider the players who didn`t start yesterday, it really hits home our strength in depth, which is arguably the best outside the best three. Watching the sky coverage yesterday amongst a crowd of 99% Villa fans, there were so many envious comments about our bench and who can blame them.

Fourteen games in and looking strong in a top four place, doesn`t make it job done, far from it. But looking at the way we controlled a game against one of the sides sure to be a huge rival, has to give us confidence that if we maintain our form and heads, we have a real shot at the final place and yesterdays result tells me more about our side and their chances than any 9-1 win...

I thinkwe're fully jusitifed to think we can finish top 4. A few seasons ago people thought we were mad to think it and we only lost out on the last day. We're a lot stronger squad wise now and have reached two cup finals, winning one of them giving the players a belief that we can compete. I agree with you about the top 3 being above us for now but you never know, if the arse lose today we stay 3rd. If we concentrate on us and not on what we cant control, other teams could do us a favour and help strengthen our grip on 3rd place giving us a bit of room to fall back in to 4th as a safety net. Like you said Ox, if there is a time to think about CL football, its now. COYS!!!!!

I don't think Villa chose to defend a 1-0 lead, their gameplan was obvious right from the off and that was to stop Spurs passing and get amongst them. Spurs imposed themselves on the match in the end. Of course Villa were always dangerous on the counter and it wasn't all one way traffic but it was the Spurs team who believed they could win that match. Good point made by a pundit yesterday was that he couldn't see Spurs, City or Villa going on a long unbeaten run whereas he could with Liverpool so he didn't think those three could crack the top 4. Personally, if Spurs do, I think it will be in part due to Spurs improving but also due to Liverpool starting to fade.

Yes, it seems odd to say about a draw, but I thought we were outstanding. The home side were clearly very happy to play for a draw at the end, though they almost stole it with Emile Heskey's clever header at the end that had Gomes beaten but, to my relief, went just over the bar. But Niko Kranjcar. What a player! What a performance! He showed skill, passion, determination, an appetite for work, ambition and courage before being retired to the bench for the last 10 minutes or so, having run himself into the ground. I really don't know what Harry's going to do now that Modric is back in training. Can we play both of the Croatian geniuses? Croatia does, but in the Premier League it might just be a luxury too much. My man of the match, with no doubt. Bassong (I haven't always been a fan) impressed me too. He's developing into an exciting attacking centreback, and he seems to be getting licence to go forward. Spurs are playing really well, and I hope that the lads get their reward.

watching the game yesterday it was def 2pts dropped.we are a better side than villa no doubt about it.this as to be the year we take our chance with city next year being bought to be a top side it might be a long time coming round again.things are looking better all round as a team there is more in deffer and work-rate so come on you spurs.
bazdog
Yep bazdog, good point. Next year Citeh will pull out all the stops and buy anyone who has a good worldcup, is rated over £20million and so on to get into the CL and liverpool will be itching to put this season right, ( if it goes according to my plan ) so this year has to be as good a chance as we're gonna get. Though if we get in it we can attract a better class of player too...hate saying that but its true.
Himwhatwhats
City were pityful against Hull I watched the whole game in disbelief. Villa are not as good as last year, loosing Barry and Petrov-Sidwell-ReoCoker, not good enough. We are improving faster than I sometimes think even harry realises. With Kranjcar looking excellent yesterday and Hudd looking like a real player and Lennon (notice no one is talking about the final ball anymore) We are the best of the rest. So are Liverpool going to really implode and can we beat them to a top4 finish? That's the big question, and I think we can, we have a better squad than Liverpool for the first time in years, and a better manager! Gerrard and Torres aside then what do they have? Game on me thinks
michael.thfc
Great to Dawson as captain. The guy is a true leader and i for one hope he keeps his place in the side.
jayspur
City do look very average - the danger is that they will click soon and just win 10 in a row... I understand the point, but suggesting that city are dangerous cos they can buy in january seems a bit silly to me - theyve already got an unbelievable side on paper, if they can play as a team they will be amazing. what are they missing in terms of players?
Joshtottenham
I really do think Spurs have an excellent chance to make the top four this season. Also many comments have been that there is one place up for grabs, I like to think there are two. I believe the Ar5ena1 may fall away without Van Persie until March, unless they buy another class forward in January I feel they are very light in the forwards/goal scoring department. Also let us not forget Modric will return, hopefully after christmas at the latest, What other team has been without one of their world class players for so long and not suffered that much? Harry could also buy in January, Pav to go? another forward maybe? Hutton to go? another defender maybe? Spurs will be that much stronger. No I think Spurs have the best chance for a number years of making the top four come the end of the season.
Ox Yid
Totally agree, I would have taken a draw before the game but after watching it was disappointed that we didnt win. However, I certainly was not disappointed with the way the team played. The team seems to be capable of playing their football away from home which will inevitably cause teams problems. What impressed me the most was the way they responded in the 2nd half after a good bit of pressure from villa in the 1st when they were doing a great job cutting off the supply to lennon. We adapted to the situation in the 2nd half and overcame this problem. I thought it was a very mature performance from our players.
TornadoYid
We are not pretenders this year. We wont be more than a couple of points off 4th. Between us Citeh and Pool.
asherthesmasher
Ditto to many of the above posts. I thought draw before the game yesterday but was a bit miffed we didnt get all 3 points in the end. Villa stifled us in the first half, but you're never going to have it all your own way against a top 5 side on their won ground. They had to double up on Lennon which negated Ashley Young and from half hour in I thought we were far the best side. There's confidence throughout the side at the moment and Kranjcar has turned out to be a gem. He's the new Ginola for me (although he's probably more consistent!) We definitely have the squad and the desire, but more importantly we have the Manager. The club is in a better place than it's been in years. There's no stigma of who's calling the shots as there was when Martin Jol had to contend with the likes of Comoli and Harry is without doubt his own man. Times are sweet and although there's bound to be a few ups and downs along the way I believe we are in it for the long haul and have every chance of a top 4 finish. Another thing too, there's no guarantee that Liverpool will go on a run as they've done in previous seasons. They are a club in turmoil at present. City can't seem to defend and Villa aren't as good as they were last season, so we may get a helping hand from our rivals. We just need to keep the intensity and the confidence flowing and hope that key men stay fit and well.

Tottenham are a top squad top manager, who has built belief and demands excellence and a bit of humility from his players . Harry has welded this team and taught them self belief, they have that sense that they are working to a future goal and not getting carried away, not too mention they have played so well with their key player missing. Imagine how good we will be with Modric back ,scary ,Niko has played his heart out and should receive alot of credit for helping the team at the right time. At this present moment the french inspired scum our down 2-0 to chelski at the immigrants got to love it haha

damn sorry about the triple post

For once we really do look like true contenders. Teams will not be so confident about attacking now as they did when we were known to have a soft southern centre. They'll approach us with trepidation and respect which in turn will allow us to dictate games more in the manner that the likes of Man Utd and Chelski do. With our pace and passing skill, this suits our game. Harry may well unload a couple of players in January (Pavyluchenko and Hutton come to mind) and use the money to bring in another "Palacios" and "Krancjar". After all we still have a tendency to ship soft goals like yesterday and if we can cut that out, we are truly on our way to the CL.

I always find it funny how Arsenal fans always call Spurs fans deluded, and jump on us at the earliest opportunity to take the ***** ----- yet season after season after season of blind faith in "Le Professeur winless" and his "Kids" (who surely are all in their mid 20s by now) they still think theyre this great team. Walcott, Vela, Eduardo, Bender, these are all players that would struggle to make our bench. Arshavins overrated too. Take Van Persie out and theyre completley toothless. And it must of been embarrassing watching 40,000 fans leave a stadium early.
HuddersfieldYiddo
arshavin is a fantastic player huddsyid but everything else i couldnt agree more. wonder kids hmm they just looked like kids today against chelskis men lots of pretty passing and naff all else i cant wait to get them at the lane in our current form its another spanking for wingers little boys me thinks
jljyid
wenger will start looking for another job lol Harry is the real professor.
Uskok
i watch the arse chelski game but chelsea is much better def title this year arse are no better then us esspecially now that they know what its like to play chelsea with in injured squad so fku gooners we had a 3-0 too
Andyflag679
i thought we played really well, and if I was a villa fan i would be worried they seem to be playing to null our strengths and more like the away team. The top 3 got stuck into us and tried to force us on to the back foot, where they got a scrappy goal and never really showed anymore ambition after that.
WestStandEnclosure
We have to believe we can do it & its exciting stuff - every game is important. We were the better team yesterday for sure. When you think about some of the peripheral players we could sell and use that money for one or two quality replacements - it looks good. Arry said how pleased he was with Jenas/Keane when they came on & the positive attitude. Gooners lost, we are still THIRD !! I know they beat us fair & square & are lethal when in full flow, but without Persie rest of season, they look like dropping a fair share of points. Modders to come back too. Would be great if Daws could make that extra step up & become a top player because he would be an ideal captain in a year or two - cant fault the guys attitude & committment
DJW
4 years without a trophy an there still happy with mr whinger, cant they admit he has taking them as far as he can, big kids at mid 20's

Two great positives from yesterday...Dawson and Kranjcar...brilliant displays and commitment from both.Dawson could become a superb captain.Kranjcar's skills are a joy..great control, quick feet, great passer, good shot. What a bargain buy!Delighted with yesterday's performance...so unlucky not to have all three points. We fully deserved to win;we had so many good shots on goal.

While i was watching the game, especially the second half, i couldnt believe my eyes, wondering how they were managing to dealt with what we were throwing at them, and how they kept us out. What a second half performance again. May not of given us 8 goals, but gave me great belief. I was dissapointed with a point after seeing it, but i didnt expect more before. I was very surprised, to be honest. I must admit, after Krancjars performance, what will happen when Modric is back? I really want to see Lennon, Palacios, Huddlestone, Krancjar and Modric in the middle. The only way we could do that, is with a 5 man midfield and Defoe up top on his own. That would be sick!!!!!! However, dont know if it truly would work, or if Harry would do it.
Machineguncupid
I loved our effort, I am satisfied with one point. But now the next test is Everton away. You all know it is doom and gloom with us :) If we lose, we will all moan " here we go again" :p And if we win, we will warn ManU about their 2nd place :p I'm just enjoying our run right now :)
NorwaySpurs
Good performances and results build confidence, as does continuity of selection. Ox I know you like me rate Hudd and it is no accident that he is the only ever present in midfield. He is so good on the ball and just keeps us ticking all the time. Kranj is proving a real bonus and an added threat; the only problem is he does wander all over the place and BAE although good in defence kept on having to pump hopeful balls forward because he had no one to help him down the left and was probably under instruction not to get caught out of position...that is why Keane was brought on later. With little threat through the middle subbing JJ for The Sarge gave us some more attacking threat without dropping off of the energy we needed. Yes I think we are developing into a real threat. Hats off to Harry and his coaches who are improving players in the way we all hoped they would...but no other managers have! We remain a long way behind chelski and manure but will give the rest a run for their money this season
Forever Spurs
Everton could be very tough - I saw the Mersey derby on sky & thought the toffees were much the better team. On the plus side - despite Pool picking up 3 points - they look weak to me
DJW
I was pleased with the result and going into third position but the thing I enjoyed most was watching Daws and Basong click. I hope they get a good run together that will firstly give them (and the rest of the team)some defensive confidance and secondly it will give woody and king the chance to get proper fit.
spurkent
and for arsenal, the moment has gone

modric-kranjcar-palacios-lennon, it will be great, you`ll see

I don't think of City as genuine top4 contenders. not this season. You can't just walk into top4 like that, being a top team has much more to it than just buying players. HOWEVER, they do have the potential to beat just about anyone in the Prem. Soooo, if we can beat them, it will be sweet sweet 3 points, because you can be sure they will cause trouble for Liverpool, Villa and Arsenal who are the real rivals to us.
cajic
Do we still needa top striker to partner Defoe someone big quick direct and strong???? and will we lose any players in Jauary?
gabidan
HUDDLESTONE! HUDDLESTONE! JESUS WEPT PEOPLE! He was utter utter utter utter utter utter TOILET! He is ONLY good when at home against a poor side! His passing was atrocious, he tried to shoot at every opportunity within 30 yards, he turns slower than a snail and can't tackle! It was Dawson, Kranjcar, Palacios, Crouch, Defoe and Lennon that dominated at Villa! Sarge seemed to have run out of puff after putting a shift in as usual, but i was STILL annoyed he went off instead of Hudd! My brother is Hudd fan cos he passes like Hoddle but even he couldn't defend him! I feel like i'm being negative after a great performance against a supposed CL chasing team who played like a relegation threatened team! I'm speechless that some people thought Hudd was good! He cannot play away from home! As we have said a few times since Wigan, we CAN get 4th, we have to go on a huge unbeaten run and get some luck! Theres no point looking too far into the future its about playing each team as they come and getting the results needed! We have made an awesome start and its going really well we just have to stay focused and keep the faith! In Harry we trust! Yiiiiiiiiddddooooos!!!!
Jabberyid
i agree hud and sarge both played off. prob the only thing stopping us from winning but they werent 'toilet'
attwooll9
Jabber i dont want to seem like a player hater, but Hudd has been a thorn for me for too long. Im not ganna say JJ is way ahead of him but I 100 % feel that on Modrics return Hudd will be warming the bench. I do feel one of kranc or modric will fill the role. It seems kranc has found an eye for through balls not to mention his silky smooth possesion play. We may regret putting him CM but is he faster,stronger,fitter,focased,experienced....than Hudd???
Mix26
i think hudd will be the one to make way for modders.............
WestStandEnclosure
I started a post on just this point Jabber and mix. Based on Chris Waddles comments that he felt Huddlestone was the one element in our side that against top opposition will come up short. Apparently he is desperate for us to get one more class CM then he thinks we can make it. And by the way he used the words We, so a clue to where his loyalty lay.
spurdon
Thank F other people saw it. Hudd & Sarge were bloody awfull.
hudderspur
Sorry atwooll9, Hudd was toilet! Sarge wasn't toilet, he was doing a lot of grafting but wasn't as influential as he has and can be(en)! Hudd is such a weak link, but i think Harry wished he would play as well as he does against s h i t e teams at the Lane! Theres no presence there, he just drifts when over run and is rushed into passing quickly, Sunderland showed him up at the Lane and our midfield looked ropey! If i was Harry, i'd be looking at Mod or Kranjcar in the middle with Sarge.
Jabberyid
There just seems a pattern developing where Pallacios is fading badly in games due to being completely knackered. It's OK pairing him with Hudd but for a lot of the game he is doing more sprints than he should be to cover for his partners lack of pace and inability to get goal side. He is then out on his feet in the last 3rd of the game. Bringing Jenas on was inspired by Harry. He completely changed it by injecting pace and energy into the middle and was sprinting into the channels to support the forwards. It was just what we needed.
muttley
Well people just do not seem to get the context that football is a team game. Whether you like Thudd, JJ, Keano etc or not we have improved as a team. Are Arsenal slagging Fabregas for yesterday's effort ? Doubt it. Not everyone is gonna play well every week. So, When was the last time we dominated an away game against top 7/8 opposition like that. Villa died for the cause in defense throwing everything in the way. Had our goal come earlier we probably would have got all 3 points. Harry has the problems to come to pick the right midfield but we should all embrace his choice but have our opinions but not be so vindictive to players. This is exactly the time they need our support and togetherness.
COYS R US
Agree 100% Coys r us! You Huddlestone knockers must have felt such relief when the Villa Keeper brilliantly turned over Hudds outside of the foot full volley. "Thank god that one didn't go in" eh Huddlestone haters! Stop knocking and start to enjoy the Hudd. Brilliant full volley, Brilliant save! Thats entertainment!!!
