Champions league or Cup Success?

It seems as though our beloved 'Arry is looking to utilise his squad for tonight's Carling up showdown with Manchester United at the fortress that is Old Trafford.

This is a real mark of his intentions and says a lot about the faith that he has in his squad that he will not be solely relying on the Carling Cup as a platform to guarantee a position in Europe next season.

Harry admits, 'Wembley is a great day out but I would love to get into a Champions league position with Tottenham,'

Strong words to say the least. A long shot - yes; an impossibility - certainly not. It is clear that there are players short of match fitness and a Carling Cup tie against a young Man United side would be an ideal opportunity to play the likes of Alan Hutton, Gareth Bale, Jermaine Jenas and Robbie Keane.

What I like about this is the option that we have at the moment. It is a way to for some of the fringe players to make Harry take notice and prove themselves to be indispensable. Robbie has not made a start since the Irish were eliminated due to a former scum handball and he will be up for the challenge.

I love Harry`s comment about Robbie jumping four foot high off the bench when asked to warm up. That is just the dedication and commitment to the cause we have wanting to see for too long now.

I do feel in many ways that Harry should take the Carling Cup very seriously. Football is a funny old game and you can never tell how thing are going to work out at the end of season. Although Champions league football is the epitome, the citadel and the summit, are we not getting a little ahead of ourselves a little early in the season.

I would take a Champions League place at the expense of cup success right now but I am also aware of the fact that qualifying for the Europa League without any silverware at all will still leave a tingle of a bitter taste in the mouth.

Who does Harry play tonight? Does he give Gio a run, allow Alan Hutton to show what he can do, give Robbie the chance to prove that he is still worthy of a first team starting place. Will Bentley take over from Lennon? Nice to have options hey 'Arry?

to be honest, I would 100% take 3 pts at Everton over a win at United tonight. In truth we should expect to give them a good game with our fringe players and if we cant we dont deserve the cup. Irrespective of beating United, we still have the likes of arsenal, chelsea and Citeh as potential semi and final opposition and for me we have to concentrete on a top 4 finish and take our chances elsewhere.
oxfordspur
I'm greedy. I wan't both! ... and unlike A***nal, we have enough real depth in the squad to do just that. COYS
ParkLane67
Concentrate on TOP4 sure! We are destined to finish in 5th place anyway in my view. For me though having our name on one of those cups will last for eternity, who will remember who came 4th in the league in less than three or four years? Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! we want to go all out for CL it's the prize right now that we all want
michael.thfc
I say both also as that is why we have 24 - 30 quality players. When will they play if they do not step up tonight. Yes keep your strongest eleven for the league, but suggest we might see: Gomes, Hutton, Dawson, Bassong, Bale, Bentley, JJ, Thudd, GDS, Keane,Crouch/Pav(depending on harry's view of Pav now). He could put Krancjar left and play GDS up with Keane. Good options and one that Manure may not know too much about. Again let them worry about us like at Villa and lets go for it.
COYS R US
Surely got to concentrate on the league. If we get through 2nite then it’s a bonus. Then if we make it to the final even better, but CL is where we deserve to be. Michael, who will remember in 3 or 4 years, I think everyone TBH. The first team in how long to break the “top4”, an I firmly believe that once we break into it we will have the Kudos to stay there. By the way Gio lovers, hate to say this but looks like he might be Arsenal player in February. Wenger apparently putting in a bid in Jan as well as Chamakh (spelling) as VP is out. With Gio not playing and Vela already progressing at the scum id say it snatch Paedo’s hand off.
hudderspur
top four everytime
jljyid
BOTH. Of course play different team as each league game is going to be vital. Im not worried about over playing our first 11, its not as though we are in Europe this yr but more worried about gettting injuries to the likes of Lennon. Defo put Keane, Jenas, Bentley and Naughton ( Hutton) in - thats what the squad is for. I play Crouch though & forget about Pav. we would be very unlucky to sustan injuries to both Keane & crouch and Keane should be fairly fresh at the moment. I know we never win at OT but think we have a decent chance against their youngsters.
DJW
I'm with ParkLane67. I want both, and I'd like to see our fringe players show that they are worth every penny by making us competitive in the Carling Cup. As for the league, it is still early days yet, but nothing I've seen from Liverpool, Villa or Citeh this season has made me think that they are as good as, let alone better, than us. Everton, who might have been contenders at the start of the season are wallowing just above the relegation zone. Arsenal, and even Man U, have even shown a lack of consistency too. As for cup glory and memories, coming fourth once in the league might not equate to having our name on a cup - although having said that, I'm wary of mentioning victory in the Carling cup in exalted company because, when all is said and done, it is only the Carling cup, the one where all the quality teams field under strength teams. However, regularly winning CL football, even without winning anything for years - see Arsenal - allows you the elite monicker of being one of the Big Four. Nice!
darkenvai
I think we need to create a winning mentality, whether it be in the cups or in the league. I remember before Chelsea became major title challengers they took the cups seroiously, we need to do the same and I think we can with our squad.
function
Due to flagrant favouritism for the home side, Redknapp should have compiled a 'Rafaesque' dossier on all the dodgy decisions that have gone against us. Then, he should of demanded that the game be played at a neutral venue. Obviously this request would have been turned down, which would've given him an excellent opportunity to pour scorn all over the competition by entering the academy side. Not only would this have been funny, it would've protected more important players for the battle of top 4 and also out 'kiddied' red nose and the paedo.
Scottspur
It would be great to win at United tonight. Harry has to work out the best formula to advance in both the league and the cups. Wenger has made it a rule that the League cup is for the fringe players. Chelsea and Man Utd have been taking the tournament more seriously in recent years even with their European commitments. Based on the fact that we have no Europe this season I think we should go for it with the strongest team possible! The players need to get used to the 3 games a week thing. Good practice for the champions League next season!!!
geoff stern
Nice to win silverware aswell though. We have a tradition for winning silverware - keep the cabinet fully stocked! Think we are long overdue an FA cup Would be over the moon with A CL place for sure, but long way to go and remember you still have to win a two legged affair before entering the CL proper - I believe Everton fell at that hurdle, so lets get some trophies too
DJW
Lets not put all our eggs in one basket I would hope harry is taking the pressure of the game and will take it seriousley but also give Bentley, Gio and Pav a run out. No Europa cup repeats please!!
cockeril
Bearing in mind they could not beat in the final last year after 120 mins they only won by pens could be the same tonight but this we might have the edge on the pens
Shropshire Spur
top 4 all day long! if we win the cup we get europa leauge, dont really want to get in that anyway! our 2nd team is stronger than united! people like bale hutton bentley jenas keane are better than neville fabio nani gibson macheda! we can win both!
j dog!
I gotta agree with Harry..Champs league is no 1 on our list...the good thing is that we can still field a good "2nd team" for the carling so I would say we are in a good postion...I wonder if Pav will play..
Daz Hotspurs
I thought Gio was still injured? If not, he has to play. Will need him if we sell Pav, as I wouldnt buy a replacement before the summer in that area. I dont think any of the cups are easy to win - there are alot of teams that have to win something & not enough trophies to go around. The FA cup is taken very seriously nowadays & you can only see the winner of that coming from top 4 or 5 teams. I would rather have a go at CC as its done & dusted earlier in the season
DJW
Why is it either or! As has been said we have a strong deep squad and the United and Arsenals and Chelsea are playing weaker or even just kids in their sides! We start with Keane and Bentley Hutton and GDS and Pav (maybe) i call that bloody strong! Theres no reason we can't compete on both stages and the FAcup with the squad we have and maybe one or two additions in january! COYS!!!!
Jabberyid
A trip to wembley is a trip to wembley and would be a great day but if push came to shove then it would be Top 4 at the expense of the goons and villa to pip pool!! Kranjcar is cup tied! Is gio Fit?? If so my line up would be Gomes--Hutton/Naughton-Daws-Bassong-Bale--Bentley-Thudd-JJ-Gio--Keano-Crouchinho either in a 4-4-2 or a 4-3-3! Spurs win 3-1 and get the goons in the semis!! COYS!!
MullerTheYid
well to answer the question its obvious we want the champs league but its obvious we want to do well in cups. We have great players who are waiting to play, lets see if they can do it?
Mix26
FFs why can't we go all out for both. What is the point of playing in these comps if they dont go all out to win. We have a strong squad and a desire to win so get out there and win damn you. I really really get *****ed off with this " I would rather finish in the top 4 than win the C cup" Unfortunately we cant simply make a decsion like that. Playing a weakened team does not gurantee a win on Saturday. ffs if the boys are not up to giving a 100% for 90 mins twice a week then we aint got a cat in hells chance of acheiving either.
johna
Seems the fans are as hungry as our boys marcspur.
Mix26
I want both. We are capable of both and we could a good run in the Fa cup if we get drawn against chamionship teams and teams from the bottom half of the premier league table and play and bug gun in the final. That will look immense. TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR:4TH IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE, CARLING CUP WINNERS 2010 AND FA CUP RUNNERS UP. What a great way to get money and to get big players interested in us help uskeep the 4th or maybe the third spot our own
spurs4evaa
Lots of reason to be!!
marcspur
I would like us to give this cup ago its a quicker way into europe, and the final is early enough to put in a good CL place challenge after. I feel we would probably finish in the top 6 at the very least. If Harry can buy a couple of good players in the window, we should really expect us to be challenging on all fronts. After all the match tickets ar'nt any cheaper when we field a weakened side in the cup is it???
WestStandEnclosure
Come the end of the season I would take a top 4 finnish over a cup win but were are a long way of the end of the season and have to take every game as it comes. I would play the fringe players tonight but still with a strong intention of winning the game. Defoe, Lennon etc should be on the bench in case we need them.
MJBSpur
Champions League without a doubt. We won the CC as we all know but it really made little difference in the long term in fact we followed it up with our worst EVER start to a league season. A run in the champions league however means more money and attracting better players. If we can achieve a Champions league place it MIGHT lead us to even bigger and better things and personally I have been waiting a long time for this to happen so for me, sod the cups this season if it means qualifying and earning the right to play against the best.
nomorewhlegends
DJW, very good point that few seem to be considering. Finnishing 4th doesn't actually garrauntee CL football. It means a 2 legged play off which after all their effort to get there Everton stumbled on and never actually played in the CL proper. We also saw MON throw away a good UEFA run last season cause he thought they'd get 4th and they ended up with egg on their faces and empty hands.
MJBSpur
You all have very valid points but after reading all of them I am siding with nomorewhlegends- Champions league brings a lot more sparkle to a season than a run in the Tin pot trophy!! Dont get me wrong I want us to win tonight but would like to see Defoe and Lennon rested as the last thing we need is for one of our best players to go and pick up a stupid injury, plus if fit?? gio and Bentley deserve a crack!!
MullerTheYid
Cl for me too I am afraid. But maybe in reality it isn't (or doesn't have to be) a choice between the two - cup or CL. Technically we do have the players available to get somewhere in the cups and it's a pity it Manyoo tonight as we dont have a great record - especially at OT. We don't have to choose - but if we did I'd go for CL. One other point worth making is that if we do win tonight it gives us an incredible boost that would overflow into our league performances and really set us up for a cracking approach to the Christmas games. For that reason I'd be very careful and get a strong team out - maybe not the first team but certainly something near to it. Tonight Mathew I'd choose Gomes, Kyle, Daws, Bassong, Bale, Lennon, Sarge, JJ, Krankjar and Keano with JD up front. Means Hutton, Hudd, Crouch, Pav, Charlie, Bentley etc to fight it out on the bench. Also it is a good point DJW - finish 4th aint CL it's a qualifier, but I'd take that place now and cash in th ecups if it was on the table!!!! Spurs in the CL - fantastic.
andyspur4life
Apparently Kranks out cup tied - so he won't be playing! can't wait for tonights game. COYSS!!!
andyspur4life
I would agree with others above and say both. We have a quality squad at present and would assume that all fringe players will be busting a gut to show harry that he is capable of starting at everton at the weekend by putting in a good performance tonight. The longer we stay in the cups the better as it will condition our squad hopefully ( fingers crossed ) for europe next year. There is no reason that harry shouldn't mix it up a little with players such as bentley/bale/hutton and possibly gio and pav getting a chance to impress. Really impressed with the 2nd half performance on saturday against villa. I never seen a home team pegged back so much so that the were employing away team tatics that would normally be used against the top four. We are heading in the right way, long may it continue.
Caoimhin
Champions League has to be the priority or we will never develop as a club. Obviously we want to win the League Cup, but it is important Harry continues to field a weakened team in this competition and makes sure our best 11 are fit for the league matches. If we want to compete with the likes of Man U and Arsenal then we have to follow their example of playing reserves in games like this. That said, as we no longer have a reserve squad, all of our second string are pretty much first teamers anyway, so there is no reason they can't win tonight against Fergie's kids.
RMH
Interesting slant on this from Martin Lipton in the Mirror this morning - The gist of the article is that tonight is a great opportunity to lay the ghosts of our abysmal record against Man U in recent years. Although, he points out, we've come close on many occasions (esp. the Mendes goal), we just cannot seem to kill them off - He puts this down to a bit of an "inferiority complex". Although the CC is not in itself a measure of success, we can, if we win tonight, raise our own self esteem and this could have a very positive effect on our remaining games against the "Big Four".
ParkLane67
Parklane, slowly but surely the curse in Spurs is breaking...Spurs are evolving which is a good sign and change is always needed...I do see the beginning of a new era...the sleeping giant is awakening.but the Man U curse is really *****ing me off as the majority of the human race support Man U and I get stick from alot of people when Man U beat Spurs....
Daz Hotspurs
i wouldnt worry about them daz half of them dont know anything about football. my old man ''supports'' man u and i know more about his parasitic club than he does and the fact i used the word parasitic shows the depth of my love for that club
jljyid
Daz - and that's why it could be so important to get the victory tonight. One small step, or could it be a giant leap?
ParkLane67
parklane totally agree and anyone remember 5-1 against chelsea that seemed to help us break our form against them, liverpool aswell in this comp. we did the scum aswell and on the whole these games have seemed closer, also i dont want to lose any match and i,m sure the players tonight will feel the same
norwichspur
I've been thinking that myself...about going into the last round of qualifying for the CL proper if we finish 4th. Everton did crash out of that and have a really bad start to the prem as well but that was down to squad size and injuries as much as anything else, something they are suffering with again. I think we are better equipped for it and have been planning for it so we'd be ok i hope. Yeah it is a risk to go all out for CL but with the amount of proven prem' quality we have i wouldnt see it as a second string 11 if he puts out the likes of bentley, hutton, jj and keane etc.
Himwhatwhats
Totally unrelated but, i love the fact that vital spurs is seriously active yet most other teams have virtually nothing going on. COYS!!!!
Himwhatwhats
very true norwichspur a win 2nite is long overdue no matter what team is out
glendalough yid
The 4th place in the league could be a poison chalice this term, world cup season best players probably unavailable due to having break after world cup so probably not play in qualifying round. Would lov for us to have that problem but I feel we cant just roll over in the cup matches to get there. Look at the uefa cup last year, and the fa cup too.......................
WestStandEnclosure
Want Gio to play, Want a TOP performance, Want a win... Just paid 9 bloody quid just so I can watch the game on SkySports 2. PLEASE just let it be a good game with a good performance from us.... As for the topic, I'm with the guys and gals that say "let's go for EVERY bloody competition were in"..
coopsieyid
our bench is rediculously strong. those that didnt play on saturday should start tonight with maybe defoe coming on as an impact sub for 20 mins. at the end of the day manure arent going to play a full strength side either.
Simgee
Why not both with the squad we have, we can play a strong team even with our 'secound' eleven, players like bentley, hutton, gio, bale, pav, etc would walk into at least 12 of the prem teams. Pick the players for the matches, we need a win agaisnt everton more the a win 2nite but that doesnt mean rest every player we want to play sunday cos some players thrive on games, some need rest. I think we can win 2nite, our 3rd 11 is better then basiktas's 1st!
liamyid
It will feel good to have bragging rights...You are right jljyid, most Man U have not a clue...I would prefer it if Man U scored 1st because they always ruin my few minutes of glory when we score 1st..
Daz Hotspurs
My team for Manu - Gomes, Hutton, Dawson, Bassong, Bale, Bentley, Jenas, Palacious, Gio (if Fit), Defoe and Pav
taniban
Hahahahah, jljyid, i was trying to work out what a parasitic club was.... though it was some old peoples club ur old man went to... oh dear, no more beer 4 me!
liamyid
I agree with taniban about our starting X1, a mixture of squad players and regulars. With regard to CL or cup success, I must go for the CL option. Remember the season we lost out on the last day to Ar5sena1 we got knocked out of both cups in the first round we joined them, at Grimsby and Leicester I believe. I realise we have a much better and bigger squad now than we had at that time but I feel CL and the league position must be Harry's main option. My feeling is put out a mixed side tonight, if they get a result great, if they lose I don't think Harry or any of us should lose any sleep over it.
Ox Yid
BOTH.....4 games aint gonna make much difference even if we do make it to the final! we have enough players to utilise the squad and cope with the odd injury (as lons as defoe, modric and lennon aint all out at the same time). i love my days out at wembley, theres nothing better! but i must admit i would love champions league nights at white hart lane!!
stuboi10
f we can beat man u tonight we will win the cup
leeimp95
Again, reitterating what people have said, but both. We have no Europe this season and this is definately aiding our campaign so far, but I hate teams that will surrender the League Cup or F.A cup to focus solely on the league. Winning cups is what Spurs have traditionally been great at. If we beat United (possible if we play a strong team as they'll field a weak one), then we have an amazing chance. I'd prefer to face Arsenal or Man City in the final than United anyway, we'd have a better chance in my opinion. The league is very important, but if he's making wholesale changes to escape injury woes (understandable) then I hope we don't play Dawson and Bassong. Might as well play 2 youth players in there if all we want to do is escape the match unscathed.
bernio3000
I hope there is a good rotational selection ,with bench players getting a run, then bring on key players to seal the deal, beating Man U at OT would be a good psychological boost whoever they field.
Uskok
CL please harry as you have ridiculed the cup and sent out the wrong message to the players!
