New contract for Steven Caulker!

Caulker who has continued to grow with one outstanding loan after another, with Yeovil, Bristol City and last season with Swansea in the Premiership could very well cement his place in the Tottenham squad and who knows, team, next season as he continues his development, that I remain convinced will lead to his becoming an integral player for club and country, perhaps sooner than many people expect.

It is easy to forget that Caulker is still only 20, but already has approaching a hundred senior games under his belt and I can see many more to follow, and such is the hight of which I rate this young man, I will confidently predict he will follow in the line of superb home grown centre halts of Sol Campbell and Ledley King, though I hope he has the loyalty of the latter and the knees of the former.

If we assume that We retain Michael Dawson and Younes Kaboul, conclude the deal to sign Jan Vertonghen and bring back Caulker, I believe that we have four outstanding centre backs, and it will be a difficult task for Andre Villas-Boas to keep them all playing and happy, as you can't see any of them being happy to sit on the bench for any length of time.

Over the last 12 months, it has become increasingly obvious that we are bringing through several players that are not only outstanding footballers, but who also have a strength of character about them. I look at the likes of Sandro, Bale, Walker, Livermore and also include Caulker in that group.

I met Caulker when he was playing for Yeovil and even as a teenager, he had an aura and presence that was almost intimidating, and all I wanted was an autograph for my son. That isn't meant to be anything but a compliment to Steven who was extremely polite, but was also still in game mode, and was probably still fuming from an FA Cup defeat, though his performance was excellent.

Following on from the appointment of a new manager and a big money signing in Sigurdsson, this new deal is another excellent and positive piece of business for Tottenham, and I almost feel greedy in wanting more...

Looks like we are forming the basis of a squad for the next few years based on youth, quality and potential. I think this is the best strategy we could have formulated. We only need to look at Ajax and Barca to see that it works with the correct people in the right positions. It is exciting times again. Lets hope that potential signings like Siggy can see that as well.

@ YT_Boy ..... Hope you're right mate and we're looking to keep our best players. Don't want to see us cashing in on players who may well be capable of emulating some of the greats we've had in the past. For me it's important that we make Tottenham Hotspur Football Club somewhere that the best players want to spend their whole careers, or at least the years when they're in their prime and that means winning trophies. Hopefully this is the start of something big for the club, God knows we've been waiting long enough. Keep 'em coming Mr Levy and this old sceptic may soon ending his posts with ILIT. This is good. I hope we can see a lot more of this promising lad. I had a thought. I know Modric is most likely on his way. What if Madrid lose interest. Things have gone quiet and Modric has not said anything since the Euro's. What i we kept Modric and he signed a new deal like Bale has. What if brought in Joao Moutinho as well lol! I m dreaming I know but you never know. Imagine a 4-2-3-1 with Moutinho and Modric, Bale, Gylfi/Oscar and Lennon. Wow, title challengers or what? For some reason i am getting excited. I feel like this is going to be our bigget transfer window ever.

Well done Steven, I have no doubt that he is going to be a top top CB for us. On Modric, well I would be very worried if I were him. A lot of players have failed at Madrid that were better than him, there are players there that you could argue are already doing a great job in his position? He could find himself in limbo if a move does go through, but maybe, just maybe he is having second thoughts? I would if I were him. He could really shine next year with us, but i don't want him if he is not 100% behind us and what we are obviously trying to do.

I was looking at an ESPN list of average wages of sports teams across the world and Le Arse average is $101,000 whereas we are around $74,000 (half of what number one team Barcelona pay). On that basis we need to keep bringing in young players with sell on potential, which has always been the DL preferred way.

TonyRich, that was assuming we are going to bring at least two forwads in. I don't expect Defoe to be with us next season. I do not see how Defoe can fit nto AVB's plans. I still expect a lot of outgoings and most of the money received going straight back out on players.

It certainly would be difficult to keep all playing and happy - in fact impossible. 38 games times 2 equals 76 CB starts in the league - and divide that by 4 CBs leaves 19 games each. Your best CBs should play 30-odd league games, so that leaves little room for Caulker. The only way to do it is to say to Caulker, "You are the Europa and cup first choice". That would guarantee 8 games for him - at least - if fit. But perhaps a better plan would be to send him back to Swansea. Think what he could learn under Laudrup... He would be in a familiar scenario, but is bound to have a tougher season - perhaps a struggling one. A defender has to go through that in order to improve. I say a whole season at Swansea will put us and Caulker in a better position in the long term.

Caulker is great news, now a striker and IMO Ade is not the man to lead our line, he's more likely to cause conflict with AVB and technically he isn't that great. First touch is awful. Lets get a young hungry goalscorer in. We have Bale and Siggy that are going to chip in with their fair share of goals, I believe we need a 25+ goals a season man. I have faith in AVB pulling something special out of the bag, I just don't have a clue who it will be. COYS

You sound like Harry TonyRich. I doubt we will be deviding players for the cups and league as muchas we did last year. There wil be a rotation like there should be, but not to seperte teams. Caulker is probably ready for our first team squad now and if he is good enough, he should eventually break into the first team. I am not a huge lover of Dawson and Caulker should force his way in front of him. Only way to find out is to give him a place in the squad. Lets not forget that Vert is also very good at LB, and may provide competition for BAE, or fill in if and when BAE is injured.

Great news re Caulker, a really top young CB. If the Vertonghen deal doesn't work out, and you never know, then he is ready to challenge for a spot. Looked good at Swansea last year, now we need to keep him at Spurs and give him game time, there are cup games in FA, CC, EL and hopefully some rotation will see him getting some games in the PL. I think he is already better than Dawson and is still learning.

If AVB decides to persist with his high defensive line pressing game I really don't see much of a future for Dawson and possibly Hudd. There's no way they would be able to close down quickly or track back at pace to cover anything that gets through. Both good players at what they do but what they "do" isn't likely to what we are going to be doing so I wouldn't be surprised to see them both shown the exit sooner rather than later.

Asher, I would suggest that it is not unfeasable that Modric will still be a Spurs player next year. 4 years left on his contract does not exactly give him a lot of bargaining power. RM do not seem to be anywhere near Levy's valuation and I have to believe that if any of City, United or Chelsea want him they will have to pay even more. Modric wants to go, but we don't have to sell. In fact, Levy's words were we will not sell him at any price. Granted we are a year down the road but I have yet to hear Levy state anything contrary.

As to the conundrum of keeping 4 CB's happy, it really is not an issue and is not enough. If King is a player/coach, then we should be ok. One injury like that Dawson suffered last season and we will be stretched. 4 competitions could well mean 55 games. That's a lot. Kaboul, while improving. has a ways to go IMO. His coverage on set pieces is poor. Dawson can only play on the right. Same goes for Kaboul. I am not sure how comfortable Caulker and Vertonghen are on the left, but King himself has said many times he is lost on the right. Fact is we need a CB and cover that are proficient on the left. Caulker, when I have seen him, has been on the right. I believe he is a top talent. Can he play on the left? That I don't know. COYS

Great news. Dont think there will be any problem keeping them happy. With the Addition of Vertonghen we will have two very good cbs, One very promising cb and one average. if you are challenging on all parts then we will keep eveyone happy. Dawson will have to decide if he is happy playing a bit part for us or if he wants first team football at QPR ect.

Won't be a problem keeping any of the 25-30 players happy. Because going forward we will be fighting on ALL 4 fronts in the hope of winning trophies and finishing in the CL places. We need them all. If anyone needs a reminder to get away from the 'Top 4 or nothing' syndrome then look at the scum down the road. Keep on losing their best players cos they never win anything and the club is run like a bank. Lets win the Cups AND finish in the Top 4.

We've already 'thrown' enough cups under the Harry regime and for what? To be told we are 4th best and 5th best in a competition. Memorable stuff. With the likelihood of us playing a high line 4-3-3 formation we will need to rotate and use all 4 of our central defenders. We will need them to be quick and they will have to cover quite a bit of ground each game so they will tire more quickly. Using all 4 will be easy and they will all get reasonable game time. I hae a problem with Dawson as I don't think he'll have the pace to play a high line. He could be a weakness and would be the least preferred choice of the 4 central defenders for me.

Agree with you all, I am full of optimism at the moment, and may it continue. In fact I know it will, because AVB is not going to stop with one signing and one contract extension. Bale just signed a new deal, Siggy chose us over Liverpoo, Lennon, as much as he can be a one trick pony lives and breathes Spurs, then you get Modric. I rest my case.

As regards my earlier post, you'll notice how I didn't get involved in the emotional attachments of our forwards to our beloved football club. That's because we haven't got any! Seriously though, Defoe has in heart in the right place and deserved more of a crack (see Spurs v Aston Villa 2011/2012 season), but I'm not convinced about JD, and if I'm not convinced after all these years... Ade I won't comment on as he is not our player. Which leaves VdV -- I love VdV, not his free kicks, I think he rates himself maybe a bit too much, but would he give his all to the club, I'd say yes. All that aside, my choice for Captain would have to be Scotty Parker. Not a bad poll, Ox, what do you say? Who should be club Captain?

BIG C, I disagree that he is not Captain material, I think he is exactly what Captains should be made of. That said you have a point that he won't play enough to qualify for the role. Out of the current squad I'd have to agree with you, Kaboul it is. But Vert if he joins? I know the best part of nothing about the guy, but he does Captain Ajax so surely he has it in him? Would worry though about giving it to the new boy through the door - that's assuming he makes it through the door! Come on, get the deal done. We all know it makes sense.

I'd say Kaboul captain, Parker 1st vice captain, Sandro 2nd vice captain.

Wilts Spurs - The players I would say guaranteed to start would be - Kaboul, Walker, BAE, Modric, VDV, Lennon, Bale. Then either Sandro or Parker is guaranteed. That is 8 out of starting 11. Vert will be 9th. Then it depends on us signing a keeper and ST.

On Caulker, didn't he sign a new contract last summer before he went on loan? I'm assuming Liverpool were sniffing around him so we made sure he was on better money. Great potential this guy has though, still a bit to learn but future England CB in my opinion. With us going all out in 4 competitions this season, am sure he will start at least 15 games this year.

Still think Parker will have a major role this season. He runs himself into the ground every game. Hopefully we have a manager now to rotate and keep players fresh. I think Sandro Is a quality player and should get more games this season. But still want Parker in the starting 11 more often then not, not nesaseraly in place of Sandro.

Spurspanther, I really don't think AVB will rate Parker as highly as HR did. Outside of his defensive capabilities he is really not a great attacking player and technical skills are far below par. I don't see him as a must in the starting 11. He is not a better player than Sandro and he isn't this teams future and I do not think him and Sandro can play together either. He plays with a lot of heart and there is playing time for him here but he is beyond the most overrated player. I just don't see running around as a skill and sure he is a workhorse but he just lacks a lot of skill and to me England at Euros summed it up. Tackling a ton and once he possessed the ball he had nowhere to pass it because he would just lose it cheaply. Sandro is 1st choice for me by a mile.

Ox - that mentality you talk about is sooo important. The arrogance and hatred some of the goon players show to us gives em pride and is why they were determined to catch us and won several in the dying seconds. We whimpered along near the end and showed less pride, no guts and you are right. Tough players, winning mentality (like sigurdsson) is what we need. Glad caulker is back in the fold, young, strong and good on the ball. Hope ledley starts coaching these guys.

I don't think Parker should be captain because this becomes a issue that we made with Keane. You are automatically on the sheet and I don't feel that anyone but a goalie should be automatic(assuming we get a decent signing there). Captaincy should be given to a player who will always be on that starting 11 outside of a few rotation games. Is Parker that player? No.

Cgan - good call about kaboul as captain. I remember him ( and vdv in fairness) being the only two players who were fired up and trying to fire others up in a drab 1-1 draw with Stoke at the lane at the end of last season and thought, yes - next captain for years to come. Interesting that during the period ledley, Gerrard and Terry have been club captains, the goons have had five and all have asked to leave.

I still think our defense is our weakest part to our game. I think Walker is very exciting player but a defender he is not. He got away many times with the likes of King and Kaboul having to pick up on his mistakes but there is no more King! Lets face the loss of King is huge and that nobody in the other 4 is anywhere near that quality. Kaboul is obviously the best option but he is still kind of a raw player. He has much potential but he isn't at Kings level. Dawson had 1 great season in his career but he has been shown to school often and has been facing many injuries. Caulker is still raw potential and not a CB who I can say we can put all our faith in for a little longer. Vert? That would just have to happen first and we need him. I don't think any of the 4 would have the right to be upset. There will be injuries and there will be games for them all but I would like to see a more consistent pairing so they build some relationship there.

That's fair raging. Don't agree tho. The amount of last ditch tackles in his own box was second to none. Agreed he is not the most gifted footballer but when you have a midfield as gifted as our you still need a player like Parker. Don't think it's just Redknapp who rates Parker in the football world.

Raging - walker is young and needs to work on areas of defending, but to say a 'defender he is not' makes me wonder if you watched him play this season and take a look at his stats. Maybe why as a defender, he was voted young player of the year. Strange.

I think we already have some natural captains in this team. I don't think an armband is needed for them as there are players who can look to each other and be leaders. My fear of giving captaincy to certain players is that they are automatic starter. Who is that in this team? Bale? Yes. Modric? Yes(was but not if he leaves). Outside of that if its given to Parker that means he is expected to be in the side every week! Is that right? I don't think so. Kaboul is at least best CB option and probably will see most the games but I just don't look at him as our long term captain. If we get Llores from Lyon I think that is ideal. He is head to toe the best in his position at WHL and unless he gets injured he will not be rotated. The arm band sometimes just means you are automatic pick but I feel we have leaders on the pitch without having to give them the band.

Spurspanther, I honestly have not heard many great things spoken of Parker from everyone. He has a lot of mixed opinions from people. I think in the end he is a workhorse but outside of that he isn't a great footballer all around. He has more heart than any player on the pitch and puts in 100% every week but he does so because he lacks the abilities in some areas. I don't mind him at the Spurs but I just can't rate him as a lock in our team.

Windle, I don't care what statistics say for his defending. I can tell you I have watched him be out of position more times than not. He isn't a great defender. He has pace and he is exciting to watch but to say he is a RB who can defend is a bit over the line. He is young a will probably improve but last season as defensive attributes go I was not overly impressed.

RagingSpur - Walker has work to do on his defensive game. However to say "a defender he is not" is harsh. His defensive game came on massively last last season. He is going to amongst the best RB's on the planet in years to come. Also, Kaboul is no longer raw, he is now amongst the best CB's in the premiership. The guy is a beast now, and will only get better. If Vert signs we are looking at having a defence that isn't far off being as good as Man City's.
I rate Parker highly but think it is time for Sandro to be first choice and Parker to come in when required. Parker does tend to work too hard at times, something AVB will need to look at. However Sandro has the potential to be best DCM on planet, this year is his time.

Spurspanther, Parker winning the EPL player of the year...that is very sad for the league. He isn't even in the PL first 11. There is so much more talent than that in this league that I am shocked when he won. He was in a side who wasn't ever supposed to get relegated! I don't get it...I'm sorry he isn't a terrible player but the fact that he is going to win that award is shocking to me. Heart is heart but ability is what I go off..

Couple of pointers, not for us, but Wet Spam have a Real Madrid player training with them, it's ok all relax, his name is Guti, WHO? Well his 35yrs olds and then they do a VWS forum with ''Spammers not on TV'' i should think not, one you don't put disgusting programmes on until after 21-00pm. Chelski have started pre-season training early, starting the session with a light warm up, then placing a football on the half way line, they all jogged backwards in 2 lines of 12 focusing on the ball as it moved towards them. This continued for 65 mins on day one.

Cgan, I rate Kaboul very high! I think he has been fantastic but he still has to work on his attitude that has cost him/us in the past. I still see room for improvement there. His physical attributes are of coarse up there with the best and if he had the King consistency I do think he has what it takes to be a great player. I have very mixed feelings about Dawson however. I think Dawson is hard worker but he just isn't young and he isn't consistent. I have seen him on his best and his very worst in the same month and thats why its hard for me to have faith in him. I will compare our defense to City when we do what there defense did. Nobody in this line is Woodgate and King! We lost 2 CB who were class!!! I don't believe we have that City defense...maybe in a few seasons as more development happens but not yet.

Walker is the best young player in the league but thats because he is exciting to watch. Bale had the same issue at LB but he always looked dodgy in defense and luck for us we moved him closer to goal he looked amazing in attack. I wouldn't mind seeing Walker moved more forward to see if he could replicate Bale on the right. Ideally I see Bale and Walker both as wingbacks in the 352/532. They are good enough defenders...I wouldn't cry to see Bale or Walker at LB in my team but more so for the damage they can do going forward because I do not have enough faith in there defense always.

I agree with whom ever said it, Parker will not be AVB's type of player. He simply is not technical enough. Add to the fact that he is getting on and his body is struggling to cope. Big fan of Sandro but i think we need another CM with the technical ability especially if Modric leaves. Moutinho is that man and AVB brought him to Porto.

Asher, If AVB didn't rate Lampard...he surely will not rate Parker. I agree there is a few players I don't see fitting into his team currently and they might be out of luck. I would like to see Moutinho, Sandro, and Modric midfield but I think its too late for that...Ideally AVB only uses 1 holding player in his midfield with 2 interchanging attacking players and all who are technical players. Its all about triangles and possession with AVB and the 433. We need that striker though...

RagingSpur - Completely disagree mate. He is the finished product. Captained his team to the title last year and getting the Dutch player of the year is process. He was voted into CL team of year last year. This guy is one the best CBs in Europe, now, not in future. He is a game changer. With him and Kaboul we could have in theory the best CB pairing in PL next season.

if AVB is going to earn his corn it has to be to sure up our defence...you only have to look at the capitualtion that took place at the Haemorroids last sason 2 - 0 up and we just stood and stared whilst RVP (RIP) was allowed to hook his foot around the ball and into the net past Friedel ,only Parker was alive to the situation......if we can show a solid back four keep our shape more and get 8 back in front of goal when we lose the ball then and only then will we stop leaking goals..and lets face it how many times have we given a lead away over the last few seasons...if AVB has been brought in because of his technical knownse he has to improve our defence....Kaboul and Dawson have to be our second CB Pairing, Walker and BAE are too inconsistent at the back ,great going forward but flakey when against better sides....the whole of the back four need looking at and somehow AVB has to get under the skin of BAE and get him to be more disciplined and less of a wild card.....we need to be difficult to break down .....passing the ball along the ground last season was great to watch but when we lose possession we lose our shape and we have to scramble to protect our goal...I want to see more control at the back ....maybe AVB can bring that to our game

RagingSpur - But Lampard isn't a defensive midfielder. Parker has much higher levels of mobility and workrate than Lampard. Parker definitely has part to play considering we will be going all out in 4 competitions next season. However I would like Sandro to be first choice. Would imagine our midfield 3 will be VDV - Sandro - Moutinho (Modric gone) for start of season with Sig, Parker and possibly Oscar in reserve.

OyVeh Maria - No way do we need a whole new back 4. Walker will continue to grow defensively, BAE is fantastic, Kaboul is one of the best CBs in PL. I think the issue has been who has been next to Kaboul, Dawson I'm not convinced by and unfortunately Kings injury problems became so apparent in latter stage of season. Put simply, Vertonghen will solve any defensive issues. It is like having Kompany, Vidic, Vermalen in their respective defences. He's that good.

Not having a striker is the big issue right now for me. If the rumours that Ade is permanent signing this weekend are true that means one of two things: a) He has taken a massive pay cut or b) There is no salary cap anymore. If B then that means there is some serious money coming into the club this summer and maybe Higuain isn't such a ridiculous thought.

Don't agree with loaning out Caulker this season. We need all 4 (I assume Gallas is gone) of Kaboul/Vert/Daws/Caulker with 16 cup games (FA/CC/EL) with any luck at all that amounts to approximately 30 games for each person for the season. That assumes that we will have some injury time also. That's enough games for each to be happy and keep sharp.

Dawson is okay, but a lot of his defending is last ditch, so it stands out, but real quality defenders like Ledley King or our prospective new lad, Vertonghen, make defending look easy by positioning themselves perfectly.

Dawson has played quite a bit of 1st team now including Champs League, he was our captain before getting injured and has been in the England side a couple of time. He clearly hates playing a high line and it's almost as if his best performances are when King has coached him through games. He also failed miserably as a left side centre half which by the way made him even deeper. I'm just not sure he'll be relishing Harry leaving and I'm not sure AVB will trust him enough for him to be happy at Spurs.

Yeah Raging, i think you are very understanding of what AVB is all about tactically. The 4-3-3 is his baby. Last year ABV did try and change too much too soon as he said. The biggest problem he had was that he didn't have the players to adjust. Chelsea is and have been very much about physicality, pace and power. Very boring to watch. At Spurs AVB should be able to hit the ground running. We already have half an AVB team. The young players will listen and learn. Players like Oscar and Moutinho are just what we need. I too am a big fan of the 4-3-3. A midfield three of Sandro Modric and Moutinho would be a formidable trio and AVB really could not ask for much more for his system if that could happen. I think we will see less of the hugging wingers, but with the total football philosophy Bale should adapt just fine. I could see Lennon losing out on minutes next season with Gylfi and hopefully Oscar coming in. One think that is so important for AVB is the age of the players. The younger they are, the easier they are to coach.

Peterbalb, great point about our CB's, however regarding Caulker, he seemed to bounce between LCB and RCB while at Swansea, although I can't say what his preference might be. Kaboul has deputized on the left a few times without too much drama. I reckon even if Vertongen falls through, which I wouldn't be surprised, Caulker adds enough cover provided Gallas is still on board. With respect to Naughton though, probably another loan season for him.

So, let me say this again - Vertonghen deal COMPLETED. Ezikel Fryers is joining us in next few days. Oscar has admitted that his agent is in talks with Tottenham. We are heavily linked with Jack Butland
And to top it, we have signed AVB & Sigurdsson and signed new contract with Bale & Caulker.
Now apart from the above deals, we need 2 strikers & 1 experienced center half. I guess we will be ready for top4 or even much more, if things fall in place.

Must be "manager watch" first three stories I read in papers all about other managers moaning about Spurs. First Rodgers who says he tried to sign Sig for same deal as he did at Swansea ? So Liverpool are not a bigger club than swans ? He is sulking nearly as much as their fans.
Then Moyes on their website I dont talk about other clubs players and then does so! That reminded me of someone , forget his name.
Finaly SAF, moaning about he might lose Fryers. That will be 3rd? member of his youth team he has lost this year. Is this more about how they see their advancement rather than money ?

TV FIXTURES ! - a few years back I was chatting to someone from sky about exactly this subject and the lack of Spurs early on. He said that they have to try and spread the games out over the season to all clubs (apart from utd of course) and sometimes they look at who they think might be in the mix come the end of the season. Now this might be twaddle but thought its worth a mention.

MODRIC - Not a defence of, but it did occur to me that when he first asked to go it might be as we were not back in CL and he might have felt we would do so again, which of course we didt. If he realised that former manager wasnt going to do it he would want out. He has been quiet this year, but most of the stuff last year came out of Chelseas regular tapping up approach and bored press people. He is a class act and yes I agree at times this year he has looked at less than his best. just a thought
