Luis Martins signs on as first team coach.

I suppose this will be a case of Luis who? But as far as the fans and players are concerned, it should be a case of who cares, as long as he can do the job.

As yet we have had no news of a No2 for AVB, but this appointment of a fellow Portuguese coach might not be the most exciting news of the day, but what is important is that he and Villas-Boas share the same philosophy of football, which seems to be the case. Martins has spent much of his time coaching the academy age of 16 and above players, spending six years with Sporting Lisbon, before moving to SC Braga in 2008 as the Head of Youth Development.

48 year old Martins moved to Saudi Arabia in 2011, where he worked with the national team and also assisted in the countries preparations for this summers Olympics, but if I am honest, I have never heard of him, but in reality that doesn't matter a jot, as long as he has the capabilities, to make our better individually and also able to work as a cohesive unit. I assume he speaks very good English like the rest of the new managerial recruits, but I am sure we will find out much more of the new man in the next few hours and days...

Having read the link about this guy off an earlier article, coupled with the positive things I've read about AVB, I'm very optimistic indeed. We could have a coaching set up that is the envy of the Prem & if the inadvertantly blabbed news on SSN about Modric, VDV & Ade turns out to be true, well, watch out everyone, the Spurs are gonna get ya!!!

Pedro Pinto from CNN said Moutinho to Spurs was as close to a certainty as you'll get. He broke the AVB story before anyone and he has his finger on the pulse of all things relating to Portuguese football. He also said he'd choose us over United if it came to a straight shoot out.

looks as though he has real experience working and developing youth will fit well with our new training complex...as for Moutinho he's a good player but imo not on Luka's level yet....he's also quite small and despite pitches now favouring small players he'll need to be strong to deal with the big fast physical players he'll find in the prem....he may take time to settle...if we get him of course!!

To me, Ideal Modric replacement would be Benat Etxebarria, Spanish International. We were linked with him a month back for 12mEuros. The guy is pure class and has represented Spain as recently as Pre- Euro friendly. He is being considered to fill Xavi place in their midfield. Just look at his skills & assists & vision, you will know what I mean But if it comes to Moutinho, I would support it too, but he could be expensive acquisition

What are Sherwood and Clive Allen's roles likely to be, if it is as familar spare parts, to keep die-hards happy, then get rid,we can't afford passengers, or dissenting views, getting in the way. If AVB is going to sink or swim by his own footballing philosophies then we must give him the chance to do so. Allen and to an extent Sherwood (although he did a great job with the future generation side) are boh tainted by the Redknapp era, perhaps a totally clean break would be best.

sydqcb5 I'm not sure what the situation with Madrid is. One place will say they need to sell, the next says they've turned down a bid for Granero from Liverpool so if they need to sell they surely can't afford to be turning down offers? I get the feeling 1 or 2 of their surplus will be coming our way to ease their bloated squad and lower the cash payment to us. I'm thinking it'll be Diarra and Carvalho they're the names that crop up the most.

It's great news all round lately. I think anyone who had any doubts about AVB are slowly starting to part with them.

The great thing about having this Portuguese connection is the fact we'll be more likely to entice Portuguese / Brazilian football players, that seem to fit the style of our football quite perfectly, over our rivals. Arsene Wenger at his best was able to do the same with his French revolution. Players like Thierry Henry, Anelka, Viera, Pires and co, all preferred to work under a countryman and the results were blinding. In the future this could mean the arrivals of Moutinho, Rodriguez, Hulk etc but lets not get too carried away.

There is also the fact that we're broadening our range of possible transfers. AVB is a man that has a passion for football in an almost obsessive compulsive disorderly way. Instead of watching match of the day to see what has been we can buy to fill the gaps, we're going to be linked with random names of players the likes of you and me have never heard of from around the globe.

I know we're eager to get the season underway and can't wait to see how everything pans out for us, but please remember this is a transitional stage. I'm not saying we can't win the PL or finish in a top four spot, but i certainly don't expect it in the first season, especially if we're resigned to losing Modric, and seeing our rivals strengthen with additions in Kagawa, Hazard, Marin, Giroud, Podolski etc. I know some clever clogs is going to bring up the fact their have been big losses around us also with the likes of Drogba and RVP making moves, but as the smaller club losing Modric is definitely the bigger blow. Hopefully AVB will get to grips pretty fast, and his spell at Chelsea would have contributed to his much needed PL experience, but a CL spot this season would be a dream, making next years transfer window something to get excited about.

I guess the biggest difference between English clubs & other European clubs like Ajax, Sporting, Barca are - when English player looses star players, they loose their way as a team, as the emphasis is on the individual. But teams like Ajax,Sporting, Porto survive & perform year after year because their game play depends on the system & philosophy they play. So,when they loose a star player,set back is temporary but long term they just go on & on. Simple example of this is Scum - who year after year loose top players, yet they continue to some how hang in there. So, if we need a self sustained model ,we need to work to a system. When we start playing this way, then any future investment could then help us safe guard our investent in players and prolong their stay at the club. Its a gamble but its gamble worth taking.

According to Spanish newspaper AS AVB has turned down Diarra. He's interested in Carvalho though so perhaps Madrid are trying to offer another player to replace Diarra in the deal. Sahin and Higuain are both reported to have turned us down.

It would not surprise me if Modric is not training, he is on his way out for the right fee. However Levy will not allow him to do an RVP rant, if he does DL will make sure he goes nowhere. I think they want AVB to start with a clean slate and so keeping away from training someone on his way out makes sense to me

"Though Moutinho's buyout clause is €40m (Dh180,515m), Tottenham believe they may be able to secure the player for as little as €22m. The deal, however, is likely to be complicated by third-party ownership and sell-on values.

Moutinho forced a €10m transfer from Sporting in the summer of 2010 and the Lisbon club are due 25 per cent of the profit on the player's next move. Reports coming out of Portugal suggesting Moutinho's coming for Spurs talks. Hope this Modric saga ends one way or the other soon. €35m plus Carvalho and a.n. other is a decent deal IMO and Moutinho's a good replacement, just get it done.

Well a bit but think about it. The lad has played at the top level. He has experience against the best. He can play anywhere across the midfield. He runs like there's no tomorrow. He wouldn't be a starter but he is a squad player who'd happily sit on the bench. Put it this way, I'd have him over Pienaar, Bentley and Jenas any day.

First time I've felt a little worried. On talksport their Portuguese correspondent was saying how he and the rest of the Portuguese media were a bit mythed with this signing, as he's a bit of a nobody. Surely after AVBs nightmare at CFC, he'd look to get a experience coach with PL experience. The players may not take to this 'nobody'. Is it a bit of a 'yes man' safe bet from AVB, someone who will do as he says no matter what?? Let's hope this blokes a hidden gem cos u-19 manager and Saudi assistant coach doesn't get the blood pumping!

liamyid - How many assistant coaches can you name who have better credentials in terms of management? Managing at International level in a very distant country must have been quite the learning curve. His CV speaks volumes more than some of the suggestions i've heard previously!

Slurms McKenzie - No. You don't have to be a good player to become a great manager/coach which is extremely evident on a global scale. I'm happy with AVB's choice. He obviously knows the guy and it's important there is a bond between the two (as long as it isn't Kevin). The fact that your assistant coach has has the opportunity and experience of managing at International level is a bonus.

Slurms McKenzie - I'm not solely basing my agreement on the mans CV. It's hardly stand out from the crowd. It's more-so faith in AVB. You don't need a massive reputation if the potential is there.

Side stepping a little but GDS has suddenly changed his tune. It wouldnt suprose me to actually see GDS shine under AVB at THFC....lol anyway I think that maybe AVB wants to see what GDS is all about. Spurs Allday, RM need to offload salary, not so much players. Most La Liga teams do not have 25 senior players. If memory serves Barca had 22. They pay more guys higher wages and take on less players. Frankly, Harry should have pitched that to Levy given his reluctance to play guys who were not his favourite in anything other than cup competitions he considered a distraction. I don't think RM can afford to add Modric on with what his wages must surely become without dumping a couple of senior players. COYS

The big news, proper news, for today and probably for the week ahead, was the return to training at Tottenham. Are players involved in the recent Euros for a few weeks and then their holidays, back in training already? I'd have thought it was a bit early for that. The photos from the training ground today showed those uninvolved in the recent Euros and the forthcoming Olympics, among them junior players, new arrival Siggy, and recovering from their injuries Messrs Huddlestone, Dawson, Walker and Bale. It will be good to see Parker, Modric, VdV, Defoe, Rose, Sandro, GDS and the rest back on the training pitch before long.

Picture of the lads doing push ups made me think a bit. I doubt they've done fitness training for 4 years - most of them probably had to have a push up explained to them. Have people who were involved in the Euros got an extra bit of time off or something?

peterballb - I think we've agreed on this for a long time. 25 senior players is a maximum. We should have 20 as far as I'm concerned, 22 maxumum (ie 2 senior players for every position). Instead of paying 25 players average wages when 10 of them are guaranteed to be bench warmers, when we could have more top class players on higher wages, backed up by players coming through out system, that are on £10-20k a week, rather than £40-70k. That could be the compromise until we get a new stadium in place anyway.

If Modric leaves then we'll sign Moutinho, unless the demand for Modric is high enough that Levy wants to sign his replacement first, safe in the knowledge there'll be a bidding war for his services. Just saw Harry Kane goal Euro-EngU19 vs FraU19 . It was a really good finish, but whats satisfying to see is before taking the volley, he makes good space inside the box. As I have been saying over the past 6 months, this lad is great talent. He looks to me more of a second striker and the fact is, he is ever improving. His hold up play has improved, his shooting has improved and so is his movement. If groomed properly, he could make our First XI in a season. We should play him at Europa & Carling cup start of season.

syd, Kane is a very decent player. He's intelligent and confident and would thrive with decent players anticipating his movement. Very composed finisher and I'd like to see him involved a bit more.

Unless AVB has said to Levy that he'd prefer to work with a fully motivated Joao Moutinho than a demotivated Luka Modric. Very possible.

All depends on AVB Yidmarks. If he wants a 100% committed Moutinho over a sulky Modric then I think Levy will sell and rightly so. Modric had quite a few on the field spats with Bale last year and I'm not sure he's a good guy to have around if his hearts not in it. Moutinho's an excellent player and we'd be making a profit out of those deals so AVB needs to decide if a 100% Moutinho is better than a 75% Modric. AVB has pulling power and plenty of contacts losing Modric with him at the helm isn't as big a disaster as it would have been previously, I have faith that he'll find an adequate replacement.

Quite funny the change in Chelsea if this happens. They've had success through powering through teams and now they're going into next season with Marin, Oscar and Hazard?? Talented players but too many lightweights for the PL. You can get away with one or maybe two but three and none have PL experience, they'll get eaten alive.

So obviously the Chavs are annoyed that we are refusing to sell them Modric so are going after one of our target in Oscar. Don't believe for a second the deal is done to Chavs. Likely he will choose Chavs over us but bare in mind Oscar has met AVB couple of times when AVB was in Brazil. Moutinho is ours i think though, if we sell Modric and lose out of Oscar, definitely worth throwing a bid in for Ganso to see what happens.

I would look to sign MARCO VERRATTI of Pescara, who almost made the Italian Euro squad aged 19, who PSG are after and who is being called in Italy, the new Pirlo, as he is a deep sitting playmaker who has excelled in the 4-3-3 formation. Would cost about £10m

there is no doubting Modric is a quality player but when up against the Man U's, red gooner scum, blue nose chelsea scum..... he was nowhere last season and how many goals does he score per season? So if he doesn't want to help the mighty cockeral crow next season let him score next to no goals elsewhere. The money we get for him would cover Moutinho no problem and if we have this war chest of 100 million (inclusive of sell ons) then get that bloody Torres from the scum! Given a run of games he would score bag fulls for us with the supply from midfield and our wingers
