Spurs public training session in LA

Spurs public training session in LA

Sunday: There was a day of various sessions at the Galaxy complex, including Spurs coaches working with LA coaches training US coaches; a meet and greet with the players; and then a 90 minute public training sessions where AVB and the coaches worked with the squad.

Four sections to the training - Warm up; a session where two goals faced each other 18 yards apart, and the players in two teams had to score from crosses or defend them (great to watch - Freund, VDV and two coaches crossing the balls); a game with posts quite close; a game with posts about half a pitch apart.

The temperature out there was about 75F, maybe a bit higher. Maybe about 1000 people watching from the side, many of them kids and families (typical LA Galaxy crowd). $50 a seat, proceeds to charity. A few things of note from the public session:

Good vibe between the players - looked settled, enjoying it, mind you who wouldn`t love being paid to kick a ball around in the sun. Almost as good as working for the wardrobe crew on Baywatch.

The big one for me - AVB looking relaxed and appearing to have authority/command without wielding it - the lack of ego in our squad was apparent, and it seems likely that if a squad does not block his methodology, then he has an infinitely better chance of success. Maybe he`s strong and humbled at the same time, more on this in a bit. Reassuring.

Hudd and Daws look fit and relaxed; Gallas too, and sharp. Kane looked sharp. I won`t go through the whole squad as it could be different tomorrow. Good to see Bale free from the injury that kept him out of the Olympics in a week`s time(?). Walker too. Lots of kids had latched onto Bale.

Vertonghen - looked focused, assured, strong, with a captain`s stature. Him and Kabs playing together is very promising. Looked quite serious too, no high fives or comparing this summer`s tattoos. Stood apart sometimes during rests, rather than socialising.

Bentley - tiny shorts puffed out at the sides like a nappy. Like he had Speedo`s on, looked a bit of a cock - literally. LA is pretty forgiving and you can do your thing here, but there were comments in the crowd. Given he`s got to fight for a place this year, looking like an adolescent member of Buck`s Fizz can`t help.

Gomes - the low note really. In the first actual session with the goals 18 yards apart, it was pretty frantic. Archer (looked good), Carlo, Brad and Gomes were swapping in the two goals constantly. The other 3 goalies were fairly standard, some saves, some goals conceded. Gomes comes on, and literally does 3 world class saves from close range in one minute, one a soaring Superman type save to tip it over the bar two handed, and two low down to his right - all a la v Ars*nal in the 2010 run up to 4th. Astonishing, the last two were like Banks v Pele - and on the second of those, he does his right ankle in, goes off for ice for 40 minutes and then hobbles off not to be seen again. Those three saves really got me thinking - but we know the two sides of that discussion.

Part of this kind of event I suppose is also winning hearts and minds. Last May Man City swaggered into LA touting the FA Cup around, donating funds to a run down part of LA for a pitch, and throwing an evening bash at the British Ambassador`s residence. Had the feel of an aggressive campaign to raise their global profile, and I think left that taste in the mouth (rather than genuinely making friends and spreading a good feel, which would count for much more here). Haven`t seen any City shirts around town this year or any mentions in the paper.

So even somewhere like LA is sensitive to how a team / organization comes across, how it and its fans behave. Leaves quite an impression one way or another, from the motherland of soccer. From this event Spurs came across well, applauding the fans, enjoying the session, signing for maybe 300 fans at the meet and greet. Heard someone come out of that saying "really nice guys". The relaxed rather than aggressive approach went down well. I sat next to four kids 7-10 years old - very informed. "What`s Spurs ground like?" Paddyspurs lecture - the atmosphere, greatest ground the world has ever seen etc. "But it`s not much bigger than here is it?". No he`s right, it`s only 8,000 more than LA. So then he gets the picture of the new stadium out and asks about the training complex too.

At the end AVB came out and was interviewed for 8 minutes by the LA Galaxy presenter. I recorded it to transcribe here, but there was so much chat around and he came over muffled/Portuguese that I can only give some highlights:

"Warmth of fans here, very very special" - great reception for Spurs in LA [and also, square brackets, some other clubs where I've managed the fans have not been warm]

"Spurs - great tradition, want to play in the way of that tradition" [ergo, some other clubs I've managed don`t have a tradition]

"Defend the colors of Spurs"

"Expectations - to go one step further than last season, to the Champions League

Eventually a shot at the title

Europa League a good competition to win, wonderful competition, access to European Supercup, Spurs have won 'it` in years past"

Interesting emphasis..

Question - when will Spurs be Premier League champions? "Definitely try" - he said more on this that was positive, along the lines of 'in time', but I didn`t get it

Mentors who have influenced him? "Jose Mourhino, Barcelona" [no mention of Terry, Cole, Lampard, maybe just ran out of time].

Round of applause for him and then he signed a crowd of autographs.

Sounded like he doesn't mind living with high expectations. One thing I concluded about Harry was that he preferred to labour without heavy expectations upon himself. He would try to deflate and defuse expectations and targets upon himself (and there`s some wisdom in that, but I think Harry had a comparatively low threshold for pressure) and so the focus was often fuzzy. AVB seems clearly focused, and on four trophies, especially Top 4 and the Europa Cup. Which suggests he`s going to have to manage and utilize a different size of squad.

The highlight for me was the reassurance about AVB - and of course just a massive kick out of seeing the mighty Spurs over here.

As for Galaxy (current MLS champions)... been poor this season but recently and suddenly greatly improved for a run of 3-1-0 in the last four games. Beckham, Keane and Donovan usually amongst the scorers and assists - but their overall team level is maybe mid-Championship (hard to say). Real Madrid won here 4-1 last year. It was 1-1 with Man City (aggressive marketing campaign, 'let's draw') who then won 7-6 on penalties. Quite a few holes in the Galaxy overall game.

Keane is the main attacking threat but the defenses here don't play the offside trap very well. Kabs should swallow him. Donovan is an honest player, and Beckham`s delivery is still often classic, albeit into much more space than a Premiership team would allow. Here the occasion will be more important than the result. If we try then we could win around 4-0 to 5-1. We`d be legends though if we just pipped them 3 to 2 in the last. LA likes a good show.

Great post Paddyspur, only fly in the oinment is Modric's behaviour. It really is the last thing AVB needs so soon into his stewardship of the team. Although its great to hear about the real positive vibes in the team and the attitude of and to AVB.

Tott-10 I agree with you he should walk into that team but with so many attacking midfielders being signed by chelski will he get the oppertunity? Are they going to play like Spain - with no strikers? or go one better and play with no defenders either? Just 10 attacking midefielders and a goalie? Sorry 9 JT is undroppable!

if we dont get a new keeper then we have to start the season with Gomez. People say friedal is reliable and you know what you get with him. i agree but the fact is you know you are going to get an average goalkeeper who makes average saves and very rarely does anything special. he also made several mistakes last year which were overlooked. gomez does make his mistakes but he makes world class saves that friedal and guddicinui( who is rubbish) could only dream about. he saved us more points than he cost us. oh and i think its great that modric is at home and the team are in the US so he is not unsettling them. we all know he is going so let him plaay with himself for a while until we get what we want. he thinks the ball is in his court but he couldnt be more wrong. levy will prevail on this one.

CalculatedKalou - Makeshift defence? Come on pal. King, Gallas, Kaboul, Dawson, accompanied by possibly two of the best fullbacks in the PL in BAE and Walker. Friedel is ok but i think Gomes deserved alot more credit for putting up with Bassong and Dawson almost the whole season, with a terrible left back in Bale and a decent Corluka but played out of position as CB at times forcing a mental Hutton at RB.
RyanHotSpur

I wasn't saying your defence doesn't contain quality. I'm on about how it changed every week almost because of the King situation. Dawson also picked up a nasty injury in the campaign, so I think he did pretty well last season. Fair enough, but is Gomes first team material? I reckon Tim Howard could do a job for you for several years, especially if you sign up Butland as a future then your set. Can't see the Lloris deal going through if I'm honest.
CalculatedKalou
23/07/2012 15:50:00

CalculatedKalou - Butland was very impressive vs Brazil the other night. I'm in agreement we need to sign a new GK but if we start the campaign as we are (which is how i see things until transfer targets are signed officially) then Gomes would be my preferred choice. The GK coach at the time was dismissed so maybe with the right guidance, confidence enforced by the managed and some playing time, Gomes could do a good job. We need to forget Friedel exists because of his age. He is great to have as a backup should Gomes start clowning around, but there's very little future we can place in a 40+ yo.

Lloris deal fell through to my knowledge. 15mil was a bit steep. I don't think the rotating King and Gallas caused too many problems at the back. It shouldn't have effected Friedels performances and Kaboul still went the season without putting a foot wrong.

Well it's a common known thing that if you put out the same back 4 in front of the keeper, then more clean sheets are far likel to come. Look at Newcastle - at the start of last season they were extremely hard to break down and that boosted Krul's confidence and propelled his position as one of the top keepers in the league. Woul you be happy with Gomes as first choice the whole season though, Butland certaintly isn't ready yet IMO, but given the right guidance could be your Number 1 in two seasons time. So if I were Levy, I'd look for a decently experienced, but not ancient keeper to see you through the next couple of years. Is that Gomes? Howard? Foster?

CalculatedKalou The reason he is so lowly rated is that he is not actually that good. He does not come off his line when he should and leaves things fo the defence to sort out which puts a HUGE amount of pressure on them so that most of he time the ball just comes straight back at him and then there is the usual panic and or struggle to clear our lines. Because of his static play he has let players like Crouch score from close range which Gomes would have saved. He can't get across his goal quickly enough to save from set pieces which has cost us points, also people seem to forget that it was GOMES who was their when we got CL football with a far inferior defence to the one Friedel had in front of him. Gomes makes many many world class saves that no other 'keeper could make saving us time after time which was why we got CL. If we had Friedel that season we would never have got into the CL because he would not have made the crucial "impossible" saves Gomes makes. I would most certainly be happy with Gomes as our number one 'keeper.

At first I blanched when I saw the length of the article, usually a very bad sign, paddyspur, but it turned out to be factual reporting and with some intelligent, colourful description. The spirit of the squad — good. The squad as ambassadors for Spurs — good. Friedel is bloody good and sensible, but Gomes too is a fine goalie. The other night's Olympic warm-up game showed Sandro, Caulker and eventually Rose to some effect. As with the squad at present in the US, it is important that all manner of players get games this coming season.

CalculatedKalou I hope that he can settle Gomes down to be the great 'keeper some of us think he can be. IF he can respond in a positive manner and get back to what he was before he got destroyed by our previous manager I don't see why not. Reading one of the previous posts it seems as if he has got some of his mojo back and is making world class saves again but we will have to wait it out now due to his knee injury. It would be great to have a 'keeper of his calibre and quality between the sticks as long as he really is back to his best again.

Tottingham10 I totally agree with you in that he is a confidence player, but then again so are a lot of strikers, I just think that if he is treated properly he would really shine. I bet if he were at Manure SAF would have got the best out of him and he would now be hailed as one of the best in the world. He and his team know how to treat players as individuals and as such they get the results with them. Look at how he worked with Beckham and kept faith with him when a lot of other managers would have got rid of him.

Nice reporting Paddy, appreciated.
As well as a fitness exercise, the trip to the States is a package consisting of marketing, player/formation evaluations, possibly some community work, and a good all round gesture in a country where football is still in it's infancy. Saw the video of the training session y'day, very pleasing to see a good mood and glad the sulkybum no 14 stayed behind.
Also pleased that all our fringe players are showing interest and trying to impress. As for Gomes, I am a fan. The only part of his game that always made me cringe was his poor first handing of ball from crosses and free kicks, preferring mostly to punch. But, I do feel that a fragile defence in front of him did not help. So with a reformed backline, I think he deserves a chance. He and Friedel as the rotational duo with possibly Butland as an onlooker, learning the trade. Just need No 14 out of the way pronto and the replacement drafted in so that we have ample time to finalise our formation, BEFORE the season gets under way. COYS.
