'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Lets hear it for the Boys!

It seems that everything in the life of a Spurs fan is doom and gloom, however stupid that appears to me, but last night, I feel we had something to feel really positive about.

A Spurs XI game against League 2 side Southend (Who finished 4th last season), might not be everyones idea of good times for Tottenham, but its crushing 6-0 victory with a very young and inexperienced side, bodes well for the future of our club, even in accepting that only a few of these players will ever become Premiership regulars. It at least offers the hope that with vision and continued growth we are heading in the right direction.

The team on the night was, Ryan (Priestley, 82); Smith, Ekong (Stewart, 70), Hall, Rose; Carroll (Pritchard, 70), Mason; Falque (Gomelt, 74), Kane, Townsend; Coulibaly (Obika, 61), with the goals coming from Kane (3), Coulibaly, Townsend and Obika. Lets not forget that Townsend, Carroll, Smith and Kane have all played some part in the first teams pre season, whilst Danny Rose has impressed for team GB in the Olympics.

It is so easy to get carried away with youth players and any individual result, but if we look closely at what we have in this era alone, we have plenty to get excited about, just as long as these players are given a chance. Add the likes of Walker, Caulker, Livermore and several others, and perhaps consider that we haven't mentioned Fredericks (just loaned to Brentford), Parrett, Luongo (on loan at Ipswich), Jordan Archer and Bostock, who has impressed this pre season, and you have to feel good this morning.

To further excite, we see Sandro representing Brazil in the final of the Olympic football today against a Mexico side that sadly wont have Giovani dos Santos in their side due to injury, but both have had fantastic tournaments and in the case of Gio, some are speculating he may now even earn a contract extension, such has been the impression he has made on AVB.

Perhaps in our comments to this article, we can all have a feel good factor and big up these young stars in the making and for once, instead of shouting that Kane lacks pace or Townsend doesn't have a final ball etc, lets understand that they remain works in progress and are all still working on their games, improving their decision making, adding polish and gaining invaluable experience. so with that in mind, lets for once get excited and talk about our outstanding bunch of kids and enjoy the moment...

Great comments from Paul Sturrock after the game: “I’m in shock, I have been in this game for 37 years now as a player, coach and manager and I have never lost 6-0 in my life so this is a new experience for me. “That is though the best team we have played for a long, long time. “They were absolutely magnificent and as a young squad a lot of them have a great career ahead of them.

hats off also to our resident gooner Tim Sherwood
spur1950
Brilliant to see the young lads getting some well deserved praise but jumping straight into the premier league is a big big step. We need some new signings to compliment the up and coming.
youknowspurs
Adebayor and lloris deals done, damiao difficult but still possible and modric staying. That would be positive and if you believe all the itk rumours, is all very positive now. Apparently adebayor to be announced soon. Hope the above is true. Back avb please levy, onwards and upwards.
Windlespur
Yep, let's rejoice, we have a half decent reserve squad. Sod it, sell all the first team, drop down to League 2 and let's batter teams like Southend every week. That way, we don't have to worry about new strikers, a replacement for Modric or a new stadium..... By the way, I was being sarcastic ;-)

I just now realised that Matty Ryan is on trial at Spurs. He plays for CentralCoast Mariners in Aus A- league. He is THE best goal keeper in the league. At 20, he is tipped to make it big in highest level. I hope we sign him up as one of the 3 keepers. The kid has got composure, good athleticism. He is very good coming out at cross. Decision making is good. The best part about his game, which our keepers right now dont have is the ability to distribute the ball well. Hope Tony Parks sees the good in him and asks Levy to sign. Seems yesterday he was good too, from fans who went to the game.

Yes I posted on a thread several weeks ago about Ryan and his trial with us and a couple of other clubs. Have heard good reprots on him and he may be what we need rather than paying shedloads for Butland

Is it just me or has anyone else been wishing to see young Coulibaly given some minutes in the first team? All I hear is how much of a talent he is. Fair play to Harry Kane I really think he can have a good season this year
Mickeys1969
Always been a fan of Levy as under him things have been much better .But this sitting around scratching our arses is getting on my tits.
If Levy don` do anything this summer he`ll lose alot of friends .Starting to think Frank was right all along .

6-0 in any Spurs shirt is a great result. Well done boys. Any highlights floating around?

Windless weeny u the one who was talking up the 4pm press conference yesterday? What happened with that? We won't be dissapointed.... Lol. Anyway glad youngsters played well. Think we have some very exciting players lets hope 1 or 2 can make the grade each yr. Carroll looks quality
vdvdaman
Start them all against Newcstle next week and see how it goes, can they really be any worse than our staring XI ?
Who was managing them yesterday?
Maybe have that same team play agianst the first team in training next week and see what happens.

Off topic but I would like to throw this into the mix re the new stadium. Everybody thinks that this will be the automatic answer to all our prayers, will put us into the "big league" etc.etc. The facts, and history, suggest that if you allow the on pitch standards to wain, while you put all your eggs in a new stadium basket then you can end up in trouble. The Championship is littered with clubs who built new stadiums only to find their playing form gone. Middlesbrough, Derby County, Bolton Wanderers, Notts Forest, Coventry City, Southampton, have all found this out to their cost, and Sunderland are hardly PL contenders since their move to the Stadium of Light, and how many trophies have Arsenal won since they moved to the Emirates. A big new stadium is only viable if firstly you can finance it without hampering squad developement. Secondly you can fill it to near capacity in every game, this requires you to maintain a competitive squad, able to win games, attract support, and challenge for trophies. Losing teams don't play in stadia filled to capacity. Our current reluctance to maintain the on field standards, suggest that by the time the stadium arrives, we may well be a mid table outfit, unlikely to fill a 56,000 capacity stadium. It is not a question of one or the other, player purchase and squad improvement or a new stdium, it has to be both similtaneously. This requires the level of owner led inward investment that we are currently not enjoying.
Frank
Does anybody seriously suggest that Kane and Coulibaly are together with Jermaine Defoe going to propel us into the top 4 of the PL this seaon. They are talented lads, hopefully with big futures ahead of them, that's the key word "futures". They are not, and must not be used as, excuses not to go into the market and buy the 2 quality strikers we desperately need, although I fear that's exactly what will happen
Frank
Windlespur, how can you say the Adebayor and Lloris deals are done, where is the confirmation, or the pictures holding Spurs shirts, the same goes for Fryers. None of these are Spurs players until properly signed and confirmed.
Frank
Middlesbrough, Derby County, Bolton Wanderers, Notts Forest, Coventry City, Southampton - Do any of these teams or did any of these teams have 20,000 members waiting for a season ticket? I understand your looking to stir the hornets nest Frank, but I find your comment weak at best.
thenuge
good result, any highlights anyone knows of? im starting to get extremely frustrated with the lack of transfer activity - if modric leaves we realistically need 3/4 players (possibly 5) coming in. and all of that should happen by early next week as we need the players settled in as much as possible before the season starts. also, personally i would love to see carroll more involved this season as i think he could be an ideal replacement for modric - every time i've seen him he looks composed on the ball and plays as the metronome, getting and giving the ball and making us play , which is what we need...
rahn DMC
Frank------which way did you vote in the poll?
ffs which came first the chicken or the egg
krafty007
Frank - great point about Kane and Coulibaly, although i think that we should perhaps use Kane in the first team for rotational and experience purposes. i think Coulibaly could perhaps benefit from either a loan to a championship level club or even just use him in the youth squads etc. especially for the nextgen competition as that seems to be a high level of youth football.
rahn DMC
I voted Gio in the last poll. So if Mexico win today without him does that still count?
TopSpur13
YOU CAN'T BEAT EXPERIENCE - 37 games and 18 goals, 5m Price already agreed, reported to be on 170k per week, asking for £5m signing-on fee = 10m, that's 10m for Emmanuel Adebayor. What is the problem? Does AVB not want him, only his never said it.
spu 4 life
And to add yes good look to the younger ones, but let's get our house in order before Newcastle away.
spu 4 life
that sounds a bit ''brum'' good look, meaning good luck
spu 4 life
krafty007, I voted "glass half empty" in the absence of the category "we need a new chairman". Somebody with some ambition and balls.
Frank
Nice article Ox. I bet there was a lot of will and determination in that game where the youth are hungry and want to impress. Those that have had a taste of playing in the senior team must have been well up to make a point. Also, as someone mentioned, who was managing the youth team and what formation did they play?. Hope AVB was there and has been given a headache about his final 25 squad selection. Really hope some of these players will get opportunities during the season, especially in the cups. That is the only way our new project involving youth will work. Some will obviously go out on loan, but hope at least 6 of those from last night will get their chance next season.
Dare I mention that even closer to the season`s kick off and still short in key positions! [Edited by Site Staff]

One week from today, lads, just one week from today! I got this from an ITK. He told me that Spurs play the opening match of the season one week from today. Could an ITK be right for once? Or will Harry be brought back to replace our tea lady? Mo, Larry, Cheese. Limburger to be served one week from today.
Total knobhead
Thanks, Critical. I always wanted to be published on VS in bold.

Sorry if I have broken the site....don't know how!

Total knobhead - Not any chance more mate ;-)

There's always a chance
TopSpur13
Lloris has been withdrawn from the Lyon squad

what-sux - Fair enough haha. Lloris looking likely to be leaving then?
TopSpur13
PLEASE stop messing around with HTML if you don't know how to close it! If you do an open eg {b} then you need to do a close {/b} but using the [ as opposed to {

If you don't know how to do it, just don't do it. It causes problems!
The Fear
what_sux, Thanks mate!...Any chance of enlightenig us mortals what caused it and what the fix is please. Cheers.
Critical_Spur
The Fear - No fear, we know HTML, I studied it though not as pro as the professionals ;-)
what_sux
Thanks 'the fear'. I had only used the br thingy...anyways, will take more care.
Critical_Spur
Critical_Spur, when trying to make a new paragragh, you left out the r on the 2nd br tag. So you went {br} {b} the {b} opened the bold, What Sux closed it, using the Fears method. Its the most common HTML mistake on here lol.
Guyver
Critical_Spur - Welcome mate. For html bold italic or underlined, is b or i or u with "<" and ">" surrounding it without space. but if you open one as I said the sentence before, you must close it by doing the same above, except putting a "/" before the b or i or u like /b with "<" ">" enclosed it. The reason why the error you shows up is because you forgot the close it mate. Hope this help you or anyone out there ;-)
what_sux
"whilst Danny Rose has impressed for team GB in the Olympics." Eh, not trying to be smart but...no he hasn't.
rojo2010
To be honest, I fear more when they break the div tag then b tag, b tag can be solved easily, div tag has to read back the source lol
what_sux
Feel educated now :0). TBH, this site is a pin re speed as I have often seen others (myself included) missing letters when typing...and blame the keyboard!. The reponse time is often poor, presumably 'cos of all the background advertising etc..My br obviously appeared as a b !!! Guess proof reading needs to be exercised! Back on topic, may be Olympics final means start of our transfer window?
Critical_Spur
pain? :) install an ad block program, you should see a huge improvement. I'll only buy the Olympics being an excuse for our lack of transfer activity if we go out and get 1 of the Brazilian strikers or something, which won't happen. Anyway as has been stated before, the Olympics didnt stop Chelsea doing a deal for Oscar..
Guyver
Sandro should use his great friendship to tempt his Brazilian fans to come here. ;-)
what_sux
Matt Jarvis handed in a transfer request. Is he a decent option on our wings from the bench? Just suggesting.
what_sux
Anyone watching Olympics final?
what_sux
IMO.. €60m (or £42m) is way too much for young Brazilian lad.. we could have done the deal at £12m last year.. either Harry or Levy fecked up?..

what_sux
Is anyone else worried about our lack of activity in the transfer market. Recently all I have read is this deal and that deal will be done when we sell Modric. Surely if we sell Modric then yes it should put a bit of extra cash in the pot, but most of it should be used on a replacement. But surely there most be money in the pot for at least one but more like two strikers, a goalkeeper, another right side midfield player to push Lennon for his spot and another left back to give Benny a kick up the bum. The two players brought in have nothing to do with AVB. Who sanctions these two signings. I'm not saying they are not needed but another midfielder was not that high on the agenda.
nothappyharry
"We could have done that deal last year" - erm no we couldnt. Weve been trying to sign him for 2 seasons now, Inter wanted to keep him for 1 more season at all costs and since then his performances have alerted the world. We offered a club record amount 12 months ago to try prize him away but was turned down flat according to Tim Vickery. So NOBODY fecked up. Its just been impossible as Inter A) Dont need the money and B) Are one of the best sides in South America
HuddersfieldYiddo
I like you, nothappyharry, find it hard to believe we are waiting on the Modric money, if and when it comes before we can buy. We will look good trying to make a signing at 10-45pm on the last night, or perhaps we will wait until January when we are falling down the league like a brick without any strikers worthy of the name. Mind you, I have some sympathy for Levy, after all he has only had 3 months since the end of the season to sort it out, not to mention the at least 2years before that, this resulted in us borrowing a striker from Man City, hence the mess we now find ourselves in.
Frank
This Mexico team is quite good. Under-17 World Champions, Gold Cup winners, CONCACAF Under-20 Champions and now Olympic champions.
what_sux
Critical_Spur - I have so many problems with missing letters and if I don't proof read I often find a 'br' becmes 'b' and so I make evething bold' and my wording often don't make sense - so yes proof reading essential but tbh I get fedup with the amount of time it takes to post messages. Im affraid if it doesn't improve I may quit posting.

Guyver any reccommendations for 'ad blocker'?

I think Olympics may have held up transfers but also Modric, Ade saga and AVB needing time to assess everyone first.
thfan
Well two of our boys got Olympic medals. Gold - Gio Silver - Sandro.

installed ad blocker not made any difference re tie response on this site :-(
thfan
thefan, if all fails, write in a word processor and cut n paste. I know it's a pain!
Critical_Spur
I rather remember the 9-1 Wigan match.
RagingSpur
We may well cover old ground here, but then AVB says Modric will only leave if the right price is paid, although some quote a meeting between player and head coach planned, to see what the next step is, Real Madrid have in many ways, poured cold water over, ''no like chicken badge'' making many waves to un-settle our best player (subject to opinion) leaving us with good old ''cold turkey'' :- So lets cast our minds back to his appointment (AVB) and the promise of ''FUNDS'' again depending on what you read, was it between 50m to 100m quoted? The question is; Does that only come into play, if Modric get's sold. Because it's 2 months ago, when we signed Siggy and then Vertonghen did finally get completed. Gio gets a GOLD, Sandro gets a SILVER, during this coming season, soon to get under way, we will not be getting GOLD, SILVER or BRONZE and the way it's looking could end up with the WOODEN SPOON. Levy needs to think very hard and remember the combination, to un-lock those funds, otherwise i can see this being a very long and very hard season, i may be wrong, but someone is getting stictched up and it looks like it's us the fans, considering the prices of tickets, for the pleasure of watching our team CAT A West Stand £87-00 (highest), YEAH put me down for as many as possible, i've not seen Jenas play in a spurs shirt for ages. You can stick your tickets, in a place the sun shines out of, no not for me.
spu 4 life
thfan why don`t you use google chrome with spell checker .It highlights all your phuck ups .
big cockeral
thfan I use the Google chrome browser with "adblock plus" installed, made a difference for me. Im not sure about Firefox, but if you're using explorer, that could be the cause. This site was a pain with that browser, especially when the ads started pooping up everywhere.
Guyver
i believe we are on the right tracks with the youngsters.. hopefully we will add to them and see come through the ranks into the first team over the next few years..
Yidmarks
sorry its not ad block plus, its AdBlock for Chrome 2.5.41 which you can find here and add by simply clicking the blue "add to chrome" bar top right.

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/gighmmpiobklfepjocnamgkkbiglidom

with a slight tweak, no more ads on vital.

Guyver - It's good mate, thanks for sharing :-)
what_sux
No problem. Its great aint it lol.

vdAMAN - RE YOUR post earlier. i said absolutely nothing about any 4pm press conference and only found out about such rumours when reading this site in the evening. FACT.
Windlespur
Frank - thank you for stating the bloody obvious. just putting rumours from itk (supposedly) out onto vital spurs _ a discussion forum. If you only want to discuss fact, well, we may not have had any fecking articles in the last four or five weeks. Goodnight.
Windlespur
I love the youth team its like free money...their also like a new box of chocolates from a different country, they all look lovely but until you try one you can really know what it performs like, ahem on your taste buds...
Slurms McKenzie
Getting these young players to the next level is the key to the future. This will reduce the need to even think of having to spend huge amounts of funds to bring in players. Buy them young and develop them!
jvd
Yes we need two strikers, but does anyone have a clue who we could potentially sign? We don't have the cash to pay huge transfer fees or huge wages, and then we have to consider that it is unlikely that top quality strikers will want to join Spurs, we are not offering Champions League football afterall. I don't think that we are going to sign the likes of Hulk or Damaio. Hopefully we can pull something out of the hat.
Fanman
Spu 4... Agree the cost of tickets is very high.. Upper East Stand (restricted view) £840 this year season ticket... We have to accept it Goes with paying players £60k a week, and £m's in transfers... but this is what we have to do in the current top level european football situation....
