Celebration for Adebayor!

Last night, probably wasn't a great night for Tottenham Hotspur, as Emmanuel Adebayor's Togo, a team that were initially banned from the African Cup of Nations, qualified for that same tournament, with a 3-2 aggregate win over Gabon. The competition which will be held in Libya from the 19th of January until the 10th of February, will of course be a bigger blow for many of our Premiership rivals, so perhaps it isn't such a nightmare scenario for Spurs, but losing arguably your most able No9, is hardly what AVB and his team would have wanted. On a positive nots for Spurs, but perhaps a sad one for Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Cameroon missed out on qualification after losing over two legs to Cape Verde, in what will be their first appearance in the finals, and would surely seem to be an upset.

Unless there is an injury to either Jermain Defoe or Clint Dempsey, I can't see the loss of Adebayor prompting Spurs to rush out and buy another striker, unless they were already planning to do so, but it will create a worrying few weeks without one of the current three, though that is something AVB has so far had to manage with throughout the majority of his time with the club. Perhaps the position of Harry Kane will be reviewed, due to this and also his current injury that has greatly restricted his chances with Norwich, but you would assume if he wasn't yet good enough for Norwich, the same would apply to Spurs...

we still need to buy a striker in my humble opinion
a 1st class one at that.
I'll second that topspur.
Togo won't qualify from their group, so not much to worry about. He might miss two games.
Tactically Challenge
Don't think it makes much difference, we still need another top class lone striker to share the workload with Ade.
for the duration of the tournament, Ade could miss, Man U (H), Norwich (A), WBA, (A) and Newcastle (H). Im assuming he would travel after QPR (A) on the 12th of Jan
Regardless of the ANC coming in Jan to Feb, if Ade goes i think we still need to increase our striker options, so keep working on Leandro Levy, where will we be in the league come the 1st of Jan, how will we be in the europa league, capital one cup and soon to start around the time, the FA Cup, the more games we have the more chance of injury, we don't need cover, we need class options, for a class team.
spu 4 life
I suppose adding another striker, will depend on where AVB feels he can also deploy Dempsey and perhaps Ade. does he see one or both as being good got playing that deeper role in support of a No9, as dempsey has already mainly played. similarly could Ade support Defoe in much the same way
ESPECIALLY now that Ade is going to cup of nations, we must buy striker in Jan. Need one anyway. Defoe is getting on (age-wise) and we cannot rely on him either. We cannot rely on Dempsey to do the striker role. Kane is better off at Norwich for the season.
Dempsey isn't a striker, despite scoring a load last year which was a one off in his career....Defoe is playing well at the moment and a player I like but he's far from ideal for our system. All 3 of them are old in PL striker terms so we should already be planning on buying a striker (bloody hell it's like a Left winger a few years ago) Kane imo is nowhere near ready (if he'll ever be)...if we don't buy in Jan we'll be the nearly men again....
of course if we can get someone who is better than we already have, lets buy, but otherwise, I would hate to see us do so for the sake of it. I had hoped those days were gone
Leandro Damaio will be Spurs player by then! Whether he will be sharp enough to start is a different question. I believe the deal is more or less done with the sticking point last summer being that Internacional insisted he remained until December unless we offered an additional 7m.
Ox - But it is not for the sake of it. Technically we have 2 strikers. Which is not enough. Defoe is 30. Ade 28. You need contingency. Kane looks like the sort who may be decent when he is 27. We cannot wait that long. Hedge ourselves by buying someone who can cover up front, but accepts that they will have to bide their time this season at least. If we were to get someone better than we had already, then we should have bought that guy INSTEAD of Ade. Obviously too good a financial deal was struck, so Ade is here. If you buy someone better, then 2 out of Ade, Defoe and new guy will be moaning about lack of starts.
Heard than Llorente and Huntelaar and Dzagoev is soon out of contract, we should try our best to get, although it will be very very hard.
1984Spurs - you forget the other problem, that he would have played a whole season on Brazil by then. He may be sharp, but probably knackered.
Tony, I dont disagree, but my point was that I would rather wait and make sure we got the right player than just jumping in and buying because we feel we have to. It still wouldnt be the biggest shock to me if we accepted a bid for Defoe and even sold on dempsey if the right bid and profit were offered (like Pienaar) if we were able to sign someone like Llorente/ Damiao or similar, I would he very happy as it was in theory an upgrade, but what I dont want are short term of short termist buys that we buy because we feel we have to
TonyRich - the problem with having more than 2 strikers & 1 youth strker is if you're only playing one at a time (as we have done all season) then how do you keep three or more strikers happy?
Sorry Tony, read your post again and see you said that at the end but started saying Defoe & Ade is not enough. I'm confused! Do you want us to have 2 or 3 strikers? (excluding youth players)
Kes - I want 2 senior strikers, 1 up and coming striker (more ready than Kane), and Dempsey to complete the set as emergency cover. That gives you 4 potential strikers. The up and coming striker will accept being on the bench, but he knows the score - and is probably chuffed at least to even be there - AND has chance to fight for a place or sub app. Ade & Defoe will battle it out, and optionally play together, or come on as sub - as AVB likes subs. Dempsey will play behind striker frequently, so he would be happy too. 2 strikers is never enough - even if you play one, because one injury / suspension (or an African cup of nations), and you have no striker on the bench.
If you want an example of the ideal scenario, it is Hernandez at Man U. When they signed him, he was young, an international, accepts being on the bench, and in the following years scores 25 in 59 for Man U. Granted, he won't take the bench for much longer, but by then you have had 3 seasons and 30-40 goals from him. The trouble is finding him...but that is not my job. Ox - ok.... I agree that we should not jump in to buy somone - but we have three and a half months to find the right guy. But we should not do a Comolli and merely fill a quota.
Strikers are the most expensive players on the pitch. It's quite obvious why Spurs haven't had a world class or even close to world class striker for what seems eons bar Berbatov. Until Levy is prepared to spend 20mil + on a single player, our chances of signing an out and out goalscorer will be like finding a needle in a haystack.
TonyRich - Hernandez is an improvement on Defoe but he is hardly an Adebayor replacement. They bring very different attributes to the game, and if it's Adebayors playing style we will miss rather than the numbers, i would suggest we made a bid for Zigic lol
If all you are trying to do is cover a three week gap buying another striker would be crazy. The time to review the striker options is the end of the season. By then you should be in a much better position to decide whether Kane will make the grade. If you do want to buy another striker you are much more likely to get your player in the summer window, mid season is panic buy time. Losing Adebeyor is not a good situation, the African scheduling has been causing problems for a long time now and FIFA should force them to bring their calender in line with the rest of the world.
jod, agreed. I think that Ade will be a big loss, but to buy a striker just for the time period that he is out would be a mistake. I mean, when Ade comes back what happens? We have two unhappy strikers on the bench. Unless we can sign a striker of real quality, who is signed for the long-term its not a good idea. As you say, we're best off waiting for the summer window in my humble opinion.
we need DZAGOEV as the man behind the striker.. we also need another striker...

lets push on in January... not fall short again...
Libya!!?? Id be more worried about his bloody safety than missing him for 3 weeks.
Just makes the three year old need for an orthodox number nine even more pressing.
