NextGen boys humble Barca!

Tottenham's U-19s showed the seniors how it should be done, by beating Barcelona 4-1 in the NextGen series yesterday evening.

Three goals from 18 year old Shaquile Coulthirst and another from Alex Pritchard gave Spurs a 4-0 lead before Barca scored a consolation with two minutes to go of the game. Many who watched the game between the two sides at WHL, wouldn't have predicted anything other than another Spurs defeat, but it seems that despite Barca starting with their usual dominance and ball retention, Spurs gained the upper hand as Coulthirst scored his first two goals in quick succession (25 & 29 mins) and from there, Tottenham's youngsters too control.

This win puts Spurs level on points with Barca at the top of the group and should we beat Anderlecht on the 13th of December, it would be a major surprise not to see Spurs again make the knock our stage of the competition, though hopefully it will end slightly happier than last seasons withdrawal due to an administrative cock-up...

How sweet is that, the under19s thoroughly deserved that win, and could have scored more. Well done ha, joint top of the group! COYS. http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/spurs/News/barca-u19s-spurs-nextgen-report-07112012.page?

Well done lads, hopefully if we maintain a high standard in this comp over the coming years it will attract the highest calibre of youth players.

its great to see the U-19s and 12s doing so well this season. of course that means little unless they are ultimately given a chance in the first team at some stage, but you are now beginging to feel that with these competitions, we are heading in the right direction and also looking to play a more structured way from academy to seniors, which has always made total sense, but was so rarely used

Ox - not sure the U12's will be ready for a while yet :-)

Seriously though, I do think the structure is better now with U21's supported with over age players and these types of U19's competitions. The challenge though is that we now have a 25 man squad rule and for the last 5 years we haven't created space for them. We're heading the same way again with Caulker, Smith, Townsend, Parrett and Mason all needing to be registered next season. When you think we still have Jenas, Bentley, 4 senior GK's, Khumalo, Dawkins etc in our numbers it shows that Levy and AVB haven't yet got the squad proliferation under control just yet. They made huge progress though in the summer and will have another opportunity in January.

So why is Alex Inglethorpe leaving for Liverpool. A step backwards in my veiw
Mickeys1969
Has to be the clubs greatest ever youth team result. Better than winning the Youth Cup in the modern game.
yid61
Great result, there must be some useful lads involved, It will be interesting to see how many make the grade to first team challengers
Frank
Mickeys 1969, I agree with you why is Inglethorpe leaving,we lost Carr to Newcastle now Alex to Liverpool, there must be somehing wrong somewhere.
