Caulker in and Defoe out for England.

Roy Hodgson have recalled Steven Caulker into the England squad to face Sweden next Wednesday, but Jermain Defoe has been dropped.

Caulker has impressed many with his quality and composure in his short time of Premiership football and I would not be surprised if he wasn't given some playing time next week to gain experience, but also because England still haven't truly replaced Terry and Ferdinand at the heart of their defence and Caulker looks like he could potentially be better than all of the other central defenders in this squad.

Caulker may currently be behind Gary Cahill, Phil Jagielka and Ryan Shawcross, but I still maintain that he will become an England regular by the end of this season or at least be considered on near equal terms to those selected instead. Cahill and Jagielka are good defenders, but already you don't see them being that much better than either Caulker or Shawcross and for me, Joleon Lescott,, is currently playing like a pub player and on current form, simply doesn't warrant a place for club or country.

Kyle Walker and Aaron Lennon have also kept their places in the squad, but whether they did enough in the last game to justify starts next week, Im not so sure. What might be considered a surprise is the omission of Jermain Defoe, as Hodgson has only opted for three strikers in Rooney, Welbeck and Sturridge, though no doubt Ashely Young and Theo Walcott could easily step in, though the goal-soring form of Defoe for club and country has been good, so if this a dropping or simply an opportunity to give others a game?

On a non Spurs note, our good friend and suggested England saviour Jack Wilshere has received his expected recall, much to the annoyance of Arsene Wenger, Celtic Hero Fraser Forster is again selected and may well have pushed himself to be considered Joe Harts biggest rival and Everton's Leon Osmad has received his first call up and the ripe old age of 31...

when you look at the CB situation Caulker is there on merit...composed, he cruises through games better imo than Smalling or Jones at CB....Defoe good player that he is he's not the future anymore is he? but our strikers aren't going to strike fear into any other countries now are they...about time a youngster came from nowhere....
@ SB2, I agree he isnt the future, but we can easily say the same about Gerrard and Osman for example. perhaps there is a situation where Hodgson feel he wants to start with Welbeck ahead of Rooney and perhaps take a closer look at Chelsea reserve Sturridge, which has merit, but I dont think it is an age issue, especially as we are hardly blessed with quality strikers that have proved their worth for England
Ridiculous to pick Wiltshire as he has not been playing & equally Walker, as he has not been playing well. Good call on Caulker - a defender who actually looks very comfortable on the ball. Lets hope England don't ruin him. COYS
Ox - Gerrard, Lamps, Terry are part of the "Golden (oldie) generation" that let us down. They should stop playing now. Time to do a "Germany" and flush out the old, and bring in the new, keen and enthusiastic. England have been flat for over a decade now. It needs an overhaul.
Not everything Coops, but most - but always with respect. Smile & wave boys, smile & wave. BIg C - Wilshire is, but the point is, he is not yet match fit - hence issue with selection.
Hope it is not true and just a rumour (not even in press), but from a pretty connected source was told yesterday that Parker will never play for Spurs again. Not sure if bust up over his stupid decision to play in euros with bad achiles, issue with AVB or what. Hopefully just BS as keen to have his will to win back in the team.
even when defoe is "hot" he still only scores 5 in 47 shots, thats one every 9.4 attempts which is actually quite pathetic. that and his one genuine assist is hardly the sort of undroppable form which justifies his pathetic strop when subbed and why ade is on the bench. I am a fan of AVB and what he represents, but he needs to play ade and lloris moving forward
Well that these players such as Wilshire, Walker and Lennon can get in just shows how poor England are. Wilshire hasn't been playing for ages, Walker has been crap all season and Lennon isn't exactly another Garrincha is he.
Why do the FA pi$$ about with mid season friendlies, most of the players have PL games, many are involved in the CL or the EL, and are valuable members of club squads, why are clubs forced to release them for pointless, meaningless friendlies, risking them getting injured and missing vital club games whilst clubs pay their wages to miss out injured, it's just bollox.
England squad means nothing, absolutely nothing i.e. Rooney could have scored 39 own goals, shagged Gary Nevile and shat on the pitch and he'd still start.

Only good thing is Walker and Caulker get to experience international training - might make them worse though???
