The January Window?

The January Window?

Now we all know that Mr Levy is not one to splash the cash in the January transfer window as he believes that there is not value for money at this time and he is probably right in general.

However, should we be looking at players who are out of contract in the summer and rather than wait and be part of a mad rush, stump up some cash and get in early? A look through the players who will only have 6 months left on their contracts throws up a few interesting names and some I feel we should seriously look at as you can often get them for half market value.

Theo Walcott - I know another Gooner, and in all honesty, I dont think he would want to join us but if he still hasnt signed an extension and still isnt getting regular games should we be cheeky and offer a tempting bid? He may not be world class but he is a good player who would offer cover/competition on the wings for Bale, Lennon etc but can also play through the middle and who knows, given the chance could be a revelation there! With a market value of around £16m could we get him for 8?

Daniel Sturridge - I'm a big fan of his and rate him above his other young English compatriat Welbeck. He isnt getting regular football at Chelsea and if they do go after Falcao that isnt likely to change anytime soon. A market value of around £14m could Chelsea be tempted with a cheeky £7m bid in Jan?

Kolo Toure - Although not the player he once was he is still a good Premiership defender. If we sell Dawson this summer for anything around £7m and then let Gallas go in the summer we will be down to 3 CB's so would picking up Kolo for just £3-4m in January be such a bad idea?

Klass-Jan Huntelaar - A great finisher as we have seen in the Champions league, who has stated his desire to join the Premiership. We know we have been linked before but lets stop messing about and get him before Liverpool do. With a market value of around £17m an offer of £10m would possibly do the job in January.

Cristain Tello - A young up and coming Barca player that for whatever reason hasnt signed up past this season. He is only 21 and can play on the wing or as a striker and being left footed could be good cover for Bale. Could we steal a Barca star like Wenger did and only pay £4m?

Llorente - Another player everyone is after so if we are brutally honest we are unlikely to get him and even with his contract running out it would still probably cost over £20m!

Marc Muniesa - Another young Barca player but a CB this time could be got for as little as £3m.

Now I'm sure there are many others that people can suggest and I accept that none of these are possibly the world class players we scream for but lets be honest - we cant compete with trying to sign Falcao, Llorente, Neymar etc etc but we can pick up class players for a bargain this January.

Would we complain at adding Huntelaar and Sturride to our squad at under £20million? or picking up 2 young Barca stars for around £7-8million? I can't really see us spending £30 million in january unless we can recoup some from sales but who knows and it doesnt hurt to be hopeful does it?

take huntelaar, dont know about toure/tello

we wont get llorente and cant see us getting walcott at all, would love to sign him though
16/11/2012 10:21:00
I think you are underestimating Tello's price. He would be a good young player to add to our squad, but don't think Barca will let him go and why would he want to join us? Walcott would offer better goal and pass ratio than Lennon. Llorente we won't get, Huntelaar maybe. Personally I would like us to sign Isco.
16/11/2012 10:27:00
We need a playmaker. CB, Striker, Wingers are all secondary to someone who can link the play! Isco for €17M (his release clause)

I´ve seen Tello play for Barca many times this season and the boys done well, can´t see Barca letting him go especially for only 4m. Would love us to sign Llorente. Perfect striker for the prem, strong, good in the air and a great finisher but i can´t see it happening to be honest. Huntelaar could be a good addition to the club if we can get him at a good price but i´ve got the feeling his best days are behind him, still a very good striker though. Definately not Walcott but a big yes to Sturridge, good competiton for Lennon and sure to get more minutes playing for Spurs.

None of those names float my boat - apart from Sturridge. But I doubt that he would come at a value price - if indeed he would come at all.
16/11/2012 11:09:00
we need to replace Modric and vdv with players who offer similar qualities. I totally understood the wanting of moutinho and willian by AVB and I just hope that if he cant get them, he is able to get players of their qualities
16/11/2012 11:15:00
Isco´s popularity and Price tag has increased considerably in the last couple of months due to his fine performances in the champions league and La Liga. There´s no way we´ve got any chance of signing him now with the likes of City and Madrid following his every move. I agree our first priority has to be an attacking MF playmaker. Realistic Options - Eriksen (Ajax), Cabaye (Newcastle), Willian (Shakhtar), Pjanic (Roma), Anderson (Santos). If Llorente and any of the above were to join in January then champions league would be guaranteed.

What about a cheeky bid for Fellaini?
Don Coys
16/11/2012 11:28:00
Jables - Walcott loses the ball far more often than Lennon does. Lennon is more intelligent as a player. Walcott only offers directness, goals and from this season we have seen a very good dead-ball delivery. But NO. Don't want a player that is holding his club to ransom just because he wants to play though the centre.

Possible starting 11 for 2013. ..........................LLORIS............................... WALKER.....KABOUL.......CAULKER............VERT .................DEMBELE.......SANDRO.................. LENNON................FELLAINI....................BALE ........................DEFOE/ADEBAYOR................. Very strong team!!!! COYS

I wouldn't be surprised if we went back to Ajax shopping again...would like to see us a get one of the much touted names but just can't see us doing it....when was the last time we spent big money?...KJH would have been good when he left RM or even when we linked previously but given his age and our style perhaps that ship has sailed....Llorente would be great but again no CL will be the first hurdle....leandro we did a little but didn't dare so we may have missed that one as well...
16/11/2012 11:49:00
What about Fellaini he`s another Dempsey its bad enough trying to get Levy and AVB to go for quality not quantity without you calling for Spurs to buy Fellaini , Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeese AVB get rid of Siggy and Dempsey in January Levy let AVB run the team he will tell you what and who he want`s you have not got a clue about quality if its above £12,000,000 cheap skate , Bill Gates come on down so we can really challenge the Cities the Utd`s the Chelsea`s the Arsenal the Barcalona`s the Real Madrid`s and so on and so forth .
16/11/2012 11:51:00
sell defoe if we can buy damiao, try and get isco or eriksson and willian or remy
16/11/2012 12:05:00
Don Coys. Isco's price hasn't increased as he has a release clause (€17M, about £13.8M), thats cheaper than any of the players you mention. Agree on Eriksen though, but he will go to someone bigger than us for over £18M.

´POP´ goes the weasel, have you seen FELLAINI play this season? He´s on fine form and has scored some great goals (6) including the winner against Utd, not to mention his numerous assists and 4 man of the match displays. He would fit into AVB formation perfectly playing behind the main striker. If you haven’t realized by now, SPURS aren´t a big spending team like CITY, MADRID, BARCA and so on and so forth. I am simply suggesting realistic targets so wake up and welcome to the real world. COYS

Sturridge and Walcott both want to play in the centre, trying to sign them as wingers isn't going to get us very far. Signing another defender in January on the basis we might then sell Dawson in the summer seems particularly crazy, Dawson has already turned down one move and is entitled to see out his contract if he so chooses. All we might end up doing is spending money on a player we don't need, you can only spend the cash once. What we really need is cover for Dembele, I don't see any of these options helping us there.
16/11/2012 12:14:00
Tactically Challenge, all i´m saying is some other team will come in with a bigger and better offer for both team and player. I would love ISCO to join us but i just can´t see it happening. I´m sure the player will want to continue playing in the CL after already qualifying for the last 16.

.....bring in Huntelaar and Willian...

alternatively use Verts in CDM... and push up Dembele....

just wanna see some flair in the CAM role... a mixture of Modric and VDV... Fellaini would be the man... it would cost 30m... but it would be worth it...
16/11/2012 13:01:00
cheeky 30million bid for Suarez anyone...
16/11/2012 13:02:00
with POP on getting rid of Demps and Siggy in January...

theres alot AVB could do with that money in that position....
16/11/2012 13:04:00
Don Coys, Dempsey was on fine form last season and scored some great goals, same with Bent and Bentley before we bought them. The real question should be, how will that player fit in with our team/style of play. The squad is lacking creativity at the moment, we need players with the ability to spot a pass and play it.
16/11/2012 13:10:00
30million for Fellaini or Suarez would be worth it? lol
16/11/2012 13:13:00
cassieyid - Good list, add it with mine llorente, dzageov, sissoko, huntelaar, holtby and walcott
16/11/2012 13:20:00
January may not be the best time to buy, but having fu(ked up the summer window Levy has no choice.

Can't believe people are already saying sell Gylfi, what a fickle impatient bunch some of you armchair plastics are, by that logic we should also have sold Bale early in his Spurs career, have a word with yourselves. shedboy2, you keep mentioning Leandro Damaio, there's never EVER been a suggestion that he's been willing to join us, but I guess in your world buying players is as easy as just putting in a bid, if we match the asking price then they HAVE to join us, right? Err, no.
16/11/2012 16:18:00
I don't see us getting Moutinho now, especially with PSG lurking combined with his age (25) and potential transfer fee 20M+. Instead we can get a younger spanish international in the form of Isco. Eriksen is another option but I can't see us getting him either. As far as our striking options are concerned, I was actually surprised we didn't get Sturridge earlier. I feel he is the ideal replacement for Defoe. Selfish, but much better. This may be possible at the end of this season when Defoe will be 31 and his sell on value starts dropping. Dempsey can't be sold at the moment, but I would hope that we can ship him off next season. But our priority this January transfer window has to be a playmaker and I wholeheartedly want that to be Isco. He's definitely within our reach.
16/11/2012 16:41:00
With us not buying quality when 10 points clear I cannot see us buying quality this January.

Actually cannot see us buying anyone.

Oh yeah, and get Willian while we're at it. Lennon hasn't been great this season.
16/11/2012 16:43:00
Tottenham Hotcore, Levy has not only fu(ked up the summer window, he has failed in the last 7 or 8 windows to sign the players we needed, where for instance is the Berbatov replacement etc. then we seem surprised when our lack of ambition drives the Modrics and VDVs away, soon to be followed by Bale, if we continue down the same road. Last January with the CL beckoning he signed Saha and Nelson, the season we got to the last 8 of the CL how much investment did that persuade him to make, none, we signed nobody of note, there was no attempt made to consolidate on that success, just to rapidly trouser the £25-30M extra revenue. The only thing Danny boy is interested in is coming out of the window with a profit as we did this summer, as far as investing in the type of player to take us onwards and upwards neither he, or more importantly, his pay master Dr. No Lewis are interested, all they want is to run the club at minimal cost, and safety first and prudence are the order of the day, unfortunately not what winning PL teams are made of.
16/11/2012 16:55:00
James Rodriguez of Porto would be the man to get if we could afford him! Can play either wing or centrally behind the striker, brilliant player - will be massive once leaves Porto IMHO!

16/11/2012 17:52:00
Sturridge would be a very good signing indeed, can play RW or up front. Excellent replacement for Defoe and proven in Prem and cheaper version of what we were expecting from Remy!!!!! AVB got him going so there is already an understanding there aswell. Ticks many boxes. Hope he comes!

Sadly Frank, I have to agree with every word there. Saha and Nelson, 'nuff said. Just a CB to replace King in Jan would have probably been enough for 3rd.
