The Cowboy earns his Spurs......

The Cowboy earns his Spurs......

Now I think its about time that we start to believe in a certain attacking midfielder that joined our ranks at the death on deadline day.

Some say he is a striker, some say a midfielder, I SAY he is a 'bloody good attacking footballer' and that man is obviously . . . . . . . . . . . Clint Dempsey. I watched the video interview posted on youtube of his about his family and his sister etc, you can't watch that video and come away thinking the guy is not committed.

During the Panathaniakos game we saw the Dempsey we had known at Fulham, pulling defences apart and threading killer passes through to the front men. His headed goal in the second half was a joy to watch and had me jumping up off the sofa after the pressure we were starting to be put under by the visitors.

I think that the skill had always been there and that he hadn't had the benefit of a pre-season to fit in with the rest of the lads and how they play. I also think that because of this, his confidence was affected and he had a tendency to go missing in his early games, with limited influence. But BOY he seems to be getting over this now, and I for one hope that he is starting to become the player we wished he would be.

I am excited at the prospect of this second half of the season and hope that Clint can now contribute in a more positive way and chip in with a lot of goals and assists. He has already helped JD to score with 2 sublime threaded passes in as many games and I am sure he will do more to 'Earn his Spurs' I hope you boys agree.....starting at Goodison Park this afternoon :-) Come on Clint, Come On You Spurs !!!!

So much of a players form is based on confidence and understanding of those around you. Just look at Torres in the last two games. Rafa has tweaked his game and also got those around him supplying better ball and support and he looks a different player. The same appears to be the case with Dempsey

I agree, clint is starting to look good. Part of the problem is, we have been comparing him to VDV, which is totally unfair really because they are different players. I too was really pleased for him on Thursday night and hope he continues to improve. He was never a player I wanted, but I also would never want a player to fail either.

Agreed, after a slow start Demps has put in some fantastic assists, great to hear that AVB sat with him before the West Ham match and made some suggestions to improve his game, since then he's made a really positive contribution. Comparing him to VDV will happen as they play similar position - I would argue that VDV had that bit of magic which Dempsey doesn't, but Dempsey won't go missing as often or run out of steam after an hour, and he has shown last season he can score a lot of goals so could be better for the team.

I hold my hand up and admit I didn't think he was good enough although I did say he may find his form. I still don't know if he is good enough. However, I agree he has improved but he is still a way from convincing me he can be seen as a top four player and be one of the players on the team sheet each week. his role is a important role providing creativity and passes for the forwards and linking the midfield to the forward line so thaat player I feel has to be top noch if we are to be taken seriously as a CL side just like I feel the same in the striker role. A CL team needs a prolific striker and also a top noch GK and CB and CM. It is the spine of the team and does Dempsey fit that I'm not totally convinced and a couple of improved performances doesn't warrant me to jump ahead and say how great he is or will be. It has to be earned and proved over a longer period. However, I don't want any player in a Spurs shirt to be a flop not for the club or for the player they are human and have feelings. I hope he does continue to improve and if he does then great but I'm not getting carried away just yet.

Got lucky today but scored nevertheless and was committed all game. One of the few positive points of today.

Same as thfan, I'm not afraid to hold my hands up and say that I may have been wrong with my initial opinion of Dempsey. I would say though that 2 good and one decent performance does not suddenly make him what we've been missing, far from it. All the same, he's made great strides this last month and if he can keep a decent level of performance up, he will make a decent stop gap until we can get some world class quality in.
