Friends Reunited for Lloris!

Tottenham have been drawn against Lyon in the Round of 32 of the Europa league, which if course makes for an early reunion for Hugo Lloris and his former club.

Based on the potential opposition Spurs could have faced, Lyon have to be considered to be one of the toughest teams we could have been drawn against, Sitting joint top of Ligue 1 with PSG, Lyon may no longer be the dominant force in French football, but even in selling several key players, including Lloris, they could be considered a better and more united team under former Arsenal player Remi Garde.

What will be interesting will be whether AVB selects Hugo Lloris against his former club, in a game I would imagine he would be desperate to play. This season there has been a policy of using a back up keeper for the Europa, but will Villas-Boas make a special case for Lloris?

Should Spurs get past Lyon, they potentially face Inter Milan, should the Italians get past Romanian Champions CFR Cluj, which is no certainty, based on current form.

Spurs will face Lyon on the Thursdays of the 14th and 21st of February and should we get past the French side would play their last 16 games on the 7th and 14th of March...

When do we get a date for this game?
Yiddo30
the two toughest draws we could have got, but the two best games we could have got as well. Realistically are we going to win it? probably not so lets have the best euro nights we can and enjoy ourselves, no pressure on us at all.
jimmy-yid
Great draw to get Lyon, a good team but beatable in what should be a cracking couple of games followed by a possible double header against Inter, I'm loving it and can't wait!
Jantheman
Yiddo30 we have the dates in the article, but other than that we will have to wait a day or so I imagine. we know the first leg is at WHL and I suppose we shouldnt worry too much about the next round until we get past the French
oxfordspur
If AVB is true to his word about how seriously he takes this competition then he really should be picking Lloris, and it's not as if keepers need to be rotated.
flipper
At least there's a reason for us neutrals to watch the Europa, you play nice football anyway but going against Lyon and possibly Inter should be a good watch.

I'd rather get the likes of Lyon and Inter than Plzen, Prague or Dnipro. Although the chances of advancing are lowered, it creates excitement, interest and the best thing of all... We won't have to travel to the arse end of Europe any time soon.
TopSpur13
Bring it on ! To win the Cup you have to be able to beat all the teams in The Competion! COYS
AllanDK
One has to hope the Lloris gets to play vs. Olympique Lyonnais. Think of the joy for him to clean sheet his old mates. He certainly found success playing for that club.
Total knobhead
Great draw, people talk of signing players to "make a statement" beating teams like Lyon and Inter is how you make a statement! If we have designs on winning the thing then we would have to beat these types of teams at some stage in the competition! These teams are easily accessible and won't require crazy travelling times or distances. COYS
Slurms McKenzie
Have to agree with your post TS13, some great games, even though it's the toughest draw we could have imagined.
Ossie
hope we have a fit squad to pick from, + whoever we buy in Jan
ledders77
Great draw for the European nights, win or lose, Lyon and Inter doesn't get much better does it. Much like the CL, the competition only really comes alive at the knock-out stage. Lyon is accessible but think their ground is quite small, only 40,000. I wonder how many away tickets we'll get? 2-3000? Looks like the Mrs will be getting that Eurostar to Paris i'd promised her with a slight detour!
StillRickyVilla
100% agree with Slurms. This is a statement draw, you can bet OL and Inter aren't too happy about it. Confident against OL, Inter will be very tough though.
thenuge
Great news as we don't have to travel far on the return leg! We were playing away at AC milan on the 15th of Feb 2 years ago...can't wait till we are back in that comp again. COYS.
SpursOne2
Jimmy as optimistic as possible... We can beat both teams and we have proven ourselves in Europe. It will be a stern test and I feel we can progress if we have a strong team to choose from...
Mix26
As i said at the start of the competition. The absolute worst thing that can happen is this Euro adventure acts as fantastic training for the players in dealing with 2 big games a week (something that we will need if we do qualify for the CL). The best thing that can happen is we have a fantastic Euro tour taking in all the best clubs and stadium on the continent, some great Euro nights and trips and the chance of a glory finish and famous trophy in Amsterdam. I see the scum are heading out of the CL - 8 years and counting.
StillRickyVilla
Are they 2 legged games or knockout both at home ?
big cockeral
Should`ve read the article .Damn best to have the home game second
big cockeral
Yep bring it on. I think a tough draw like this could further convince Levy to put his hand in his pocket..I'm not scared of either team, Lyon are good in an average French League (look at Lille and Montpellier in CL) and Milan are beatable.
Sebthespur
I think the Lyon fgames are either side of FA Cup fifth round day, so if we get an easy draw in the FA cup (if we are still in it) we could really go for it in the Europa League
jonathan01
Good point Seb. We definitely need a couple of re-inforcements in January. As jonathan says, with the FA Cup as well around that time, the games are going to be coming thick and fast. Exciting times though. Looks like Chelsea are nailed on for the League Cup. Hopefully when the silverware is carved up at the end of the season we will actually have a say this year. I'm hopeful. Still, we could be Arsenal.

Great Draw and the reason why is neither of these sides will set up to defend. They will want to win these games. Look at the Champs League adventure and the amount of goals we scored against sides trying to win games. Lyon will attack us and that will help us. The same with Inter. Much better draws then going to eastern Europe or a game at the lane against a side who are playing a 4-1-4-1 just trying defend and kick us off the park. Also With Lyon being involved in the title Race that is surely where their attentions will lay. They might rest players depending on their weekends fixtures. Same with Inter. Both these sides will prioritize getting back into the Champs League before winning the Europa. Which is something else to Factor. Also the Lane will be Buzzing which will help us and the tricky fixtures could encourage transfer activity. Moutinho can play in Europa for instance as porto are in Champs League.
Chirpystheman
If they want to make it more thrilling then they really need to make it knockout ,2 legs just drags the tournament out .
Can`t help think it`s more a money making scheme ,than a fan satisfaction one .

Make a European FA Cup ,same style
big cockeral
we want to be in the CL now we have drawn against a CL team, full team out ?
123spurs
Well if anyone knows Lyon it's Hugo, so it could be in our favour having a lot more inside knowledge about the side and set up we will face. Only problem is, well he be playing, as friedel and hugo have switched over.
spu 4 life
well; will
spu 4 life
14th of FEB 2013, they will be re-naming that day; The Saint Valentine's Day Massacre of Lyon at the lane.
spu 4 life
ade, got left out of the togo squad for the ANCup
spu 4 life
Adebayor deserves it ,not all about him .Got to respect Togo for that ,Unity is the key
big cockeral
Brilliant draw, WHL will be rocking and we can take those two no problem, just ask Garth Bale. Lyon may be second in Ligue 1 buts that's probably the equivalent to 8th in the prem, you'd fancy us against Norwich! COME ON!
T.H.F.Chris
Big C, its exactly the same format as the Champions League and we are even playing the same teams! Not quite sure what the problem is mate, apart from the EL doesn't get the hollywood treatment on Sky Sports that the CL seems to get. Oh well, each to their own. I'd recommend enjoying the ride though, we waited 25 years to get back into Europe consistently. We might not be in it at all next year.
StillRickyVilla
StillRickyVilla, come tomorrow, none of us may be here!
In-spurs-ational
A tough draw, but a good one and lots of interest. Nice to get through the group this year. Hopefully the next draw will be even more exciting - shame Maicon now at city.

Arry said from his car window, if the world ends tomorrow, it's the only way
spu 4 life
QPR will have stayed in the prem.
spu 4 life
I am most certainly excited by the knock out stages of EL, the main reason being that we’ve actually got past the gruelling group stages of the competition. Now being matched against the proper ‘Best of the Rest’ it is by far like being as competitive as CL. Like Slurms said, it’s time to make that ‘statement’. If we do well, with it comes euro-wide recognition, a confidence booster, good European experience which may create that drive for players to reach that holy grail (CL) next season. COYS!

Tasty games exciting but tough. We will need full strength squad to cope with these games if we want to progress. We haven't been prolific in Europe this season so I hope the best is to come. I think if we really want CL and want to attract players it is these types of games we need to put on a good performance and win.
thfan
For once i totally agree with bigot c, it should be a knockout competition. Its all about the money.
HuddersfieldYiddo
While all games are tough in PL, we have 2 winnable fixtures sandwitched between 2 Lyon legs. The 3 days before Lyon comes to Lane, we host Newcastle and the weekend, we go west ham away followed again by second leg trip to Lyon. Atleast there will no travel worries.

Lyon game is a long way out. For now, we need to focus on PL and ensure we have a good run of games in this festive season.
sydqcb5
so that means I'll have to ditch my girlfriend early on Valentine's day!LOL thats worth the trouble if its Lyon!

Lol jacobsland, sorry for the three comments. This mobile really sucks!
SilwalYid
Agree sydqcb5 - Not too bad Newcastle at home then just down the road to meet spam. FA cup as well remember. Focus on the PL is priority, hope we can swerve this one next year and gt back to the CL!
SpursOne2
On a different note looking at our next few fixtures over the xmas period and into the New year they are all winnable games up to when we meet Utd on January 30th. I will be disappointed if we don't take maximum points and sustain our top fourth position and then go into the Utd game full of confidence.
thfan
Not a bad read http://www.tothelaneandback.com/spurs/2012/12/21/tottenham-hotspurs-five-best-players-so-far-this-season.html
SpursOne2
Yea SpursOne2 would mostly agree with the top five with a toss up between dfoe and lLoris (defoe woulld win hands down if we did this a month ago!). When you look at the difficulties Man United are having Verts and lLoris would be god-sends to their club and Sandro the icing on the cake! Do we have the clout to hold onto these guys over the next few years? Only if we have Champions League at the Lane consistantly!
Slurms McKenzie
Likewise chelsea's problems at the back. When we get Kaboul and BAE back fit then I think Spurs have the best defensive squad in the premiership but still require an additional LB!
Slurms McKenzie
Our midfield is propably only a link up player away from near perfection (if townsend and Falque develop!) and one more striker who is a combination of Ade and Defoe to complete the picture. Its a long time since Spurs have been 2-3 signings away from real contenders (despite what Harry used to say!)
Slurms McKenzie
StillRickyVilla You have a point there ,but it works for the CL as it is so much more prestigious .Europa league just seems so dragged out .I`d prefer straight knockout ,but like you said each to their own .
big cockeral
I had maybe one or two doubts about Lloris at first, then he plays and the boxes get ticked. My one concern then was is he hard enough? The clearance, completely legitimate and 10 out of 10 as a challenge, that left Michu floored or "floored" shall we say, ticked that last box bigtime. I think we have got a legend-to-be here. COYS, thank you Ox for all your hard work on Vital, the co-contributors and those we don't know about or take for granted. I wish you all a merry christmas and an enjoyable holiday. This is not Huddersfieldyiddo, he left himself signed in on my computer. So who am I? Lets stuff Stoke, bless Jimmy, the Shelf, the PL end and Allah Paige (anyone?)

Do I turn the lights out? Ox?
