Ever since Villa suffered a total humiliation at the hands of Chelsea, I've been trying to decide whether that was a blessing or a curse for Tottenham.
My heart hopes and prays that Villa's young players will be crushed from the mauling at Stamford Bridge and Paul Lambert won't have had the time to do anything radical on the training pitch to in players minds, however, I do wonder if a a hefty kick up a few backsides will force a history tells us that young players and teams have a habit of being brilliant one game and absolutely useless the next.
Also playing at home might well be a problem in terms of tactics for Lambert, who may feel that playing safe and looking to regain some confidence and composure, might prove all the harder by a home support that will have been equally bruised by Sundays loss and will want to see their team come out fighting in response as opposed to looking to be cautious and keep things tight. No home fan wants to see his team sit back and play in a manner that seems negative and Spurs are perhaps not a team to be facing so soon after their own frustrations of dropping two points at home to Stoke.
Equally, can Villa seriously look to take the game to Spurs and potentially be ripped apart on the counter by the likes of Lennon and Bale? This really is a huge test of Paul Lambert's managerial qualities. Perhaps Villa fans might look for crumbs of comfort in last seasons heavy defeats of Norwich and the regenerative powers of Lambert, but in all their big defeats last season, defeat followed the next game and with so many young players at Villa, can you expect too many big characters, but do they have that 'bouncebackability' of players that defy their age? I am not sure.
Perhaps in part by his own making or at least that of a board anxious to cut costs, Lambert hasn't too many experienced options to call upon to add wisdom and organisation. Bent and Dunne are both definitely out, whilst Agbonlahor, N'Zogbia and Vlaar are all very doubtful, so it could well be that Lambert has no other option but to play pretty much the same team as he put out on Sunday. It did cross my mind that he got things wrong tactically in playing a 3-5-2/5-3-2 formation, whether that assisted in Villa's inability to take the game to Chelsea or that they were simply over-run, it is always up for debate.
Chelsea to their credit were superb, but their opposition was shockingly open and naive, with little ability to make vital on pitch adjustments and perhaps we can again look to the fragility of those on the bench such as Stephen Ireland, who were obviously deemed to be incapable of offering anything to the youngsters. If Villa and the fans keep their heads and back this young but promising side, they may well reap the benefits, but you feel there could be quite a bit of pain in the short to medium term and in this time will the struggles take its toll on the players who need guidance in their time of development.
As for Spurs, Clint Dempsey doesn't appear ready for today, however he is believed to be near enough to fitness to be available for Sunderland at the weekend. Scott Parker and Benoit Assou-Ekotto are both in the squad, though whether either will start is up for debate. Certainly in the case of BAE, the fact he hasn't kicked a competitive ball since the 1st of September, surely makes him a big question mark, however he has always appeared to be naturally athletic and capable of playing every game and may well be seen as being ready to play. With Jan Vertonghen voicing his desire to play in the centre, you wonder if it will be a pick between BAE and Naughton wherever possible from now on. It did cross my mind that certainly the right footed Naughton would be perfect to have the left footed, right winger of Adam Johnson at the weekend, so will he play today and the weekend, with Jan in the middle, perhaps alongside Gallas or Caulker?
Other than the left back/centre back position, I feel that we will probably stick quite close to the team we have in recent games, however, with a busy Christmas period, will this game be an ideal one to rest Sandro (for Parker) and play Sigurdsson behind Adebayor, and then use Defoe and Dempsey at Sunderland? Gallas and Caulker also seem good rotational options and perhaps who is seen as being a better foil for either Benteke or Fletcher, might get the nod. For me, I would be very happy to see a starting line up of Lloris, Walker, Caulker, Vertonghen, BAE/Naughton; Parker, Dembele; Lennon, Sigurdsson, Bale and Adebayor and that offers sensible rotation, whilst also offering a team which I believe will be far too strong for what I believe and hope will be a Villa side in turmoil, for one more game at the very least...

Time to start making possession count.
So often Spurs dominate matches, without applying the killer touch - goals.
My XI - Lloris, Walker, Dawson, Vertonghen, BAE, Sandro, Dembele, Bale, Lennon, Adebayor, Defoe.
I want to give a start to Gylfi, but considering Villa are slightly edgy in their defense after 8-0 drubbing, I want to go for Ade & Defoe.
As for the Wesley rumours....well, think about it. We had the same issue with Ade’s signing. IMO, it can be done. Wheeler dealer Levy can buy him on the cheap and compensate by paying higher salary. IMO also, Wes would be a better option than Van der Vaart.
Lloris
Walker, Gallas,Vert, Naughton
Parker,Sandro
Gylfi,Dembele,Bale
Ade
Defoe and Lennon to come on in 2nd half.
COYS!
Sounds familiar doesn't it?
Porto have contacted Tottenham regarding Jan deal for Moutinho.
therefor putting our performance against them into perspective, I am saying we played a pretty good game. Yes we should beat them, we had our chances but we didn't put the ball into the net. That's so strange as we're tied for the third most goals scored in the league.
Also if he can play between the lines, he will be one of the tough players to mark. On other hand, Gylfi seems to have the brain & work ethic to make us tick as a team. He was unselfish today -anyother player who hasnt scred in PL, would have taken the shot and probably missed it, but he cooly slooted it to Bale for the goal. Total team player.
There was no problem with Bale roaming. The point I nderstand now is, the entire team has to have a good off the ball movment. This season that is the difference I see. Last season with Harry, Sandro & Parker was prohibited to make forward runs, Walker has to play the entire right wing, while VDV can graze the pitch else where. Centre backs should hoof the ball when having chance Full backs dont overlap wingers etc etc...
This season I have been pleasantly surprised with improvement in Sandro. His lung bursting forward runs and off the ball movement are trmendous. That is why I see more success for Bale in centre of the pitch, where he can always find space and take a shot on
The only other obsevation I would make is that our attacks are still not fluid. Too many pauses and allowing the opposition to regroup. Not a moan as I am a happy bunny with the season so far! COYS!
Firstly, there is not that much of doomsayers as you put it. Certain of late I have found a good mixture of VIEWS and EXPECTATIONS. Some folks call them fickle. Seriously though it would be sooooo boring if we ALL had the same views. Peeps sare entitled to their views as long as they can back it up with examples.
Secondly, Wanting/demanding more from your teams is only natural, regardless of the circumstances. You ALWAYS want to see improvements and evidence of evolvement. I bet you any money that ManU supporters still sound like 'doomsayers' despite sitting atop with 7 points margin. It's natural mate. So take a step back and let peeps have their views without resorting to abuse! :0)
Difference between AVB & Harry using Bale in a roaming role is - Harry used Bale in central role where every thing else stayed static. It was more of trying something new because player is capable of it but not because of the team dynamics. I fully understand fan frustration last season - point is when Bale was roaming around, we did not have Lennon so ended up having no width at all. AVB is playing a definite system where he allows free flowing football. Likes of Sandro & Vertongehn are given the freedom to bomb forard and make runs. Bale is given far more space to exploit the middle when he drifts from left.

If we want Bale to stick to left wing and now drift in, then get a bloody good striker and ensure the work Bale does has some results. Dont want a repeat of that 2010 season where Crouch, Pav,Defoe scored 10 goals altogether
If we want Bale to just score 10 goals a season by all means play him & stick him in left wing. In that case we should be satisfied and not long for more.
If we want him to score more than 10 a season, there is no way he is going to score just from wings. That is to me a wasting his talents.
AVB is going on the right track with Bale. We just need to use him more centrally to tap into his potential of finding the back of the net. To me 10 goals for Bale's talent is not good enough
You are definitely right though, AVB is going on the right track with Bale. When you consider he has scored 9 prem goals so far, 6th top scorer, ahead of the likes of Rooney, Torres, Aguero; he isn't doing too badly at all.
4 -4 -2 is a good ,proven formation providing you have a Roy Keane type defensive midfielder ,we have that in Sandro .
But it`s very hard to make it work when you have Adebayor in your time whose attitude is as poor as i`ve ever seen .
Bring up Sol Campbell ,Klinsmann ,Modric ,Berbatov etc ,, at least when they put the famous lily white shirt on they gave it everything ,played to their best .
Adebayor is a disgrace imo ,& his disgraceful attitude to the club & fans is beyond belief .
Great result lads ,well played ,but with a better number 10 ,as Chelsea did ,we could have scored 8 .
Spurs ,the mugs threw him a second chance ,paid us back by playing like a complete tool .
Go back to 4-3-3 when Dempsey returns as he`s more an attacking midfielder for us .
LEVY buy7 another striker (or 2 ) Adebayor only cares about his bank ,not his club
Garykir, I would be annoyed as well if I was Ade as well when Bale decided to round the keeper, taking the more difficult option instead of providing a simple tap in. Ade clearly knows he is under pressure and that chance would have eased the pressure on him to perform.
Matthew Etherington? Hell no. Almost as bad as someone suggesting Cameron Jerome a few weeks ago. ;)
PS, I think that was the reason he seemed a bit miffed at Bale not passing to him. A simple tap in for him could've potentially saved some blushes. Bale scored however and Ade become the fall guy! Life's a bitch!
No wonder he gets away with playing complete $hit whilst earning a £million a month & still smiles about it .That grin is for us suckers ,it should not be tolerated .Nothing we can do the contract has been signed ,but it should not be let go so easily .
Adebayor wins the lottery every month by doing nothing ,the more money they earn the less sympathy that goes out .There are many more people out there who actually deserve it
Ade & Defoe have no chemistry ,but it`s hard when Adebayor is only giving everything half hearted .
You cannot defend the indefensible ,only from a low earning up & coming player would you ever tolerate that .
SPURS were warned but did not listen
C`mon know your $hit
Walker has started to sort himself out both in defence and attack..
i think there is a few surprises in the bag come January..
id go alll out for ISCO/SNEIJDER and ALEXIS SANCHEZ...

But players like Adebayor & lennon are not good enough & both signed great deals in the summer ,made them even richer ,ridiculously rich ,but IMO not worthy .
Players must earn their corn & it`s like that in all walks of life .But in football it`s scandalous .
Fell sorry for an overpaid millionaire ? what`s all that about ?
Same as the papers crying over Chelsea wanting Lampard out ,really ? he wasn`t loyal ,just got made rich & sorted .If they were loyal Lampard would be at West Ham & Bale at Southampton ,Rooney at Everton , Van Persie at Arsenal ,Modric at Spurs & Torres at Liverpool .And Adebayor would still be at Arsenal
Footballers want their cake & eat it ,but why should we let them ?
And he loved the club & fans so much he couldn`t even be bothered to keep himself fit .
How many games has he played this year whilst picking up £5million ?
No one knows as a fact what Ade earns at Spurs, nor do we know the full behind-the-scenes shenanigans of Mancity and Togo. In any case what a player earns should have no DIRECT significance to you or I. At the end of the day Levy and AVB are responsible for employing and remunerating these guys. If you really want to pick holes with the financial rewards, then pick on Bentley, Jenas, Gomes et al. These guys, especially the latter two have picked up fat pay packets for not even being in the squad for how many seasons?....again a Leyy problem. Our direct interest should be on their performance on the pitch. In that context, we do NOT know what role and instructions AVB has given to Ade. AVB still praises Ade and has said in the past that he will be staying.
Give the guy some slack. I would say revisit your posts in about a month time. I am expecting our 2nd half of the season to be a major improvement over last few seasons. I also believe Ade will come good and make all this negativity towards him look like humble pie.
On a final note, just read the forum only about 5 weeks back and see how both Dempsey and Siggy were being slagged off for being the worst signings. Suddenly we can’t wait to see them in the starting eleven!! COYS!
I guess Love Totty indirectly highlighted just how poor our second half of the season was.
With Villa and Llorente both going so cheap we have got to snap one of them up. We are going to need a third striker and those two are excellent. Also if it works out we can always sell Ade on for £8m and we make a profit.
Regarding Ade and selling him on, forget it. Nobody will take him off our hands, he's riding the gravy train and will only leave on his terms. I expect him to go out on loan to QPR if they manage to stay up, hopefully then he'll play well enough for their 'more money than sense' owners to offer him one last payday. Failing that, we're lumbered with him.
