Tottenham have confirmed that Brad Friedel has signed a new one year contract.
Friedel will be 43 when the new deal expires, so whether this is the final deal for Friedel remains to be seen, however, it seems to be a good move by Spurs and will probably allow them to offload one or perhaps both of Huerelho Gomes and Carlo Cudicini in the January transfer window, whilst also allowing our promising youngster Jordan Archer, not just the remainder of this season but perhaps next as well to develop his game and gain experience to return as back up for Lloris.
Of course Brad is talking up his continued ambition to fight for the No1 spot with Lloris, however, I assume that Hugo will now be considered our Premiership No1, and perhaps Friedel will get the nod for cup games, which may well be seen as being a better option that dropping down a level and being a number one for Blackburn, if that offer was serious.
I do still have reservations about Lloris and Friedel being keepers with differing philosophies, with Lloris being very proactive and taking control of his area, whilst Friedel prefers to allow his defenders to take responsibility. Ideally I want unity in how they play, but for me, Friedel remains an excellent alternative and his short term retention does allow Spurs to move on one or two others, whilst having time to develop or bring in a new longer term back up over the next 12 months...
