New deal for Brad!

Tottenham have confirmed that Brad Friedel has signed a new one year contract.

Friedel will be 43 when the new deal expires, so whether this is the final deal for Friedel remains to be seen, however, it seems to be a good move by Spurs and will probably allow them to offload one or perhaps both of Huerelho Gomes and Carlo Cudicini in the January transfer window, whilst also allowing our promising youngster Jordan Archer, not just the remainder of this season but perhaps next as well to develop his game and gain experience to return as back up for Lloris.

Of course Brad is talking up his continued ambition to fight for the No1 spot with Lloris, however, I assume that Hugo will now be considered our Premiership No1, and perhaps Friedel will get the nod for cup games, which may well be seen as being a better option that dropping down a level and being a number one for Blackburn, if that offer was serious.

I do still have reservations about Lloris and Friedel being keepers with differing philosophies, with Lloris being very proactive and taking control of his area, whilst Friedel prefers to allow his defenders to take responsibility. Ideally I want unity in how they play, but for me, Friedel remains an excellent alternative and his short term retention does allow Spurs to move on one or two others, whilst having time to develop or bring in a new longer term back up over the next 12 months...

Friedel served us well but I think it is time to move on and let a younger man with "modern" philosophy take over as second string
Big Ron
I hope he becomes a coach for us when he retires! Would be a great model for the youths

waste of money unless he's going to coach....I don't want to hear we can't afford the wages of players whilst we continue to pay four 1st team keepers.....madness! Just hopes lloris stays fit...

Doesnt matter about age, hes a great back up for Lloris now! It means noone will poach him at end of season and we can now release Carlo and the Octopus at the enhd of the season and goo a good young goalkeeper as No 3 and one that can learn from Brad... Potentially Schmicheal or Butland a great call. Well dont Spurs!!!

i wonder if this is a ploy to stop 'Arry from poaching him in a few weeks time?not sure if this a good move, would have preferred to see gomes get some action and have brad move to a coaching role next seas.....ho-hum.one keeper is going to have to move on,my guess is that it would be cudacini as gomes is younger....(i think?).

why would hary want to poach Friedel when he has two perfectly good keepers at QPR?

what we also need to consider is what Friedel brings to training and the dressing room. he has an outstanding reputation as a great trainer and also as a big but steadying influence in the dressing room.
oxfordspur
we are more likely to get some cash for gomes he is younger and Brad will be number 2 with Cuducinni going which will free up two lots of wages cudducini and gomes and then we get a young keeper to learn makes sense to me.

New deal for Brad makes sense doubt it will be extended again but a great professional whose attitude both on and off the pitch will hopefully rub off on the younger kids at the club.
MrSpurs
there's something wrong at a club that has four 1st team keepers and only two strikers! (and Dempsey)
shedboy2
We finelly have a world class no1! A great keeper is the main part of the engine! Times are looking good.on the up!as for brad its only another year plus if dan sniffs a club looking at him he ties him down to get more money! Ah never know but if not a great no2. Coys.

The overwhelming question has to be why? Friedel has been a good keeper, helping us to recover from Cocco, but he has now lost his 1st team place to Lloris. As Shedboy says we have 4 keepers and only 2 strikers, and the first move we make is to re-sign Friedel. If we as rumoured are to lose Gomes, and Cuddacinni, I suppose it might be a "safety first" signing but it is hardly ambitious, I would rather get Buckland.

Rumours of Carlo going to USA, but recently he played golf with Kevin bond. Mmmmm. I think brad is solid and imagine a great guy to have around the squad, so pleased with this news, even if he is our number 3 keeper for that period.

Great move for me, Friedel must be a good trainer and probably gets on with Lloris. Gomes off hopefully and Cuc should be also. I agree that having 4 keepers is wrong however given the choice, who would you have. Surely the answer is Lloris with Friedel back up. 18 months easy, then get the next one in. Lloris could stay for 5 years, who would come to play cover for him?
