'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Sunderland Vs. Tottenham Hotspur.

I have to say it is difficult to have too many complaints as a Spurs fan, though I know some will always find a few, however unreasonable or unfounded. One defeat in nine and that an injury time loss at Everton is a very impressive run of form to see us sit nicely in fourth place and there is a definite feeling that AVB is working well with the players and they are embracing his methods, which will hopefully see us be even better in the second half of the season, whether we bring in new players or not.

In contrast, I am still awaiting more evidence as to whether Sunderland's three wins in four are proof of a revival in form and fortunes or just a lucky spell to take them towards the mid table positions of respectability. Of course (again) beating Man City at home is a real eye-catcher, but City look far from invincible and perhaps were the architects of their own downfall as much as Sunderland can take credit. The other two wins against Southampton and Reading are perhaps expected and anything else could easily be interpreted as reasons to continue talk of relegation, as opposed to being an improving team. If we consider before those wins, it was one win and seven defeats in the previous eleven, so are we on a revival or simply getting lucky?

On paper Sunderland have genuine quality and for me has massively under-performed this season. Take away the goals of Stephen Fletcher and they would be in real trouble and perhaps recent and much delayed improvements from Adam Johnson and Stephane Sessegnon have made Martin O'Neill's side look more dangerous as an attacking force, but despite creating much more, you hardly feel they are a team that will score enough to get two or three goals to win a game, so perhaps if Spurs score one, that might well be enough to get at least a point as long as we play to our ability. In defence and attack, losing Danny Rose will also be a big loss, but perhaps Tottenham's gain as they will surely look to exploit the loss of Rose who has been sensational for Sunderland all season.

Tottenham have to take great heart from the Boxing day victory at Villa. Sure Paul Lambert's team were rubbish and I expect far better opposition tomorrow, but overall, we played really well and could easily have scored more than four, which despite a weak opposition, is always a big boost, knowing that as a team you are gelling and playing well. I always feel that just before or during transfer windows, you either see teams up their games as players fight to prove they can do a job or they get downbeat knowing that new faces will cause upheaval. At this time, I feel that Spurs know what they need and understand that any new arrival will be for the benefit of the squad as opposed to established players being dumped. Would it be a shock to any of us to know that Dawson, Huddlestone and perhaps one or two other already know their fate, but as they are not regulars, wont rock the boat and will be professional enough to play their part if needed.

Again we are in that position where perhaps we need to rest one or two, but do you make radical changes to a team that win 4-0 in the last game? Perhaps we can see Caulker or Dawson come in for Gallas, whilst perhaps Dempsey or the much improved Sigurdsson will start over Defoe or more likely Adebayor in attack, but otherwise would we expect too many changes? In defence, I feel that retaining Naughton at left back is an ideal foil for the left footed Adam Johnson, therefore it also pleased Jan Vertonghen in allowing him to retain his place in the centre. As for BAE, is he fit enough? If so why not use him against Reading in midweek?

Of our rivals, all have losable games, with WBA away to United, City away to Norwich, Arsenal at home to a Newcastle side that will hopefully be buoyed by their performance at Old Trafford and Everton at home to inform Chelsea, a win will certainly do wonders for Tottenham's claims for 4th place and I feel that if we play as we have been, we have a very real chance of getting all three points tomorrow and finishing 2012 in a top four position has to be considered a great place to be after so many changes in the last six months...

Should be a good game. we win this and we can feel well satisfied. Plus it will put pressure on le arse4 and the scum as well as citeh. So I think 3rd could well be within our grasp as long as we play to our potential and don't suffer any more major injury problems. We have done bloody well considering the upheaval and the injuries. Long live AVB long live his revolution
chrishove123
Sunderlands defence is solid as we have seen over the last few months...

the game does suit us... away from home and we are looking pacey at times... hopefully this is a 3 pointer for us.. as there are a few 6 pointers being played by teams in the top 6 over the next couple of fixtures..

clearly 4th by the end of January would be perfect... plus 2 big signings...
ISCO/SNEIJDER/ALEXIS SANCHEZ/WILLIAN/INCE
HUGHES/LLORENTE/NEGREDO/REMY/MOUTINHO

Ym Whe3re are we going to get all the cash for these players. I have heard the rumour that we have 30 mill at the most. I really feel we don't need it 'til the season's end.
chrishove123
my Xi to start tomorrow: Lloris, walker, Caulker, vertonghen, Naughton; Sandro;Dembele; Lennon, Sigurdsson, Bale, Defoe
oxfordspur
Id prefer to see this team start... then bring on Ade for either Parker or Dembele...

......................Defoe.........................
Bale..............Dembele............Lennon
...........Parker.............Sandro............
Naughts....Verts.....Daw/Caulk..Walker
.......................Lloris.........................
Yidmarks
Siggy has to play otherwise we won't be able to unlock this touch Sunderland team. Ade and siggy up top for me!.......
01tottenham
we sometimes forget that Dembele started his career as a striker/AMF.... id try PARKER/SANDRO/DEMBELE.. just once..
Yidmarks
Lloris, Walker, Gallas, vertonghen, Naughton, Lennon, sandro, Dembele, Bale, Sigurdsson, Adebayor. I think we will need the experience of gallas for Sunderland.
01tottenham
01tottenham. That's the line up I'd really like to see. Ade and Siggy. Ade needs a game like this with FULL reponsibility upfront. Defoe can always come on later to keep their defence on toes. COTS!
Critical_Spur
Dembele's out, but BAE andParker are ready. So no question:
Lloris.
Walker, Calker, Vertongen, BAE.
Sandro, Parker.
Lennon, Syggi, Bale.
Adebayor.

Yes I say Ade, because with Sigs behind, no interference from Defoe, a bullying Sund defence, away from home Defoe can weapon in for either Sigs or Defoe, we have CB backup, LB and RB backup, wing backup however light, and there's no doubt Ade's fit now, this is a good match to get his form back and running into the next crucial games
tengboon
I don't want to see a fragile Dembele risk injury, the Sunderlands are physical and ruthless, however unorganised
tengboon
With the exception of Kaboul, we're close to a fully fir starting 11 here. Let 'em have a go while the confidence is high! They will capitulate after such an upset last week, all the lower divisions do that
tengboon
I would make one change from 01Tottenham's lineup, I would play Caulker or Dawson over Gallas. 2 3/4 days rest is not enough for Gallas to overcome the effects of playing the whole game at Villa. Plus they give us extra height on corners, especially Caulker.
jvd
Would be happy with a starting X1 Including: Lloris, Walker,Caulker/Daws,Verts,Naughton/BAE Lennon/Townesend,Sandro,Dembele,Bale,Dempsey/Siggy/Ade,Defoe. In Jan we need to bring in ATLEAST one of these Aubameyang/Remy/Soldado/Pato/Negredo/Damiao and hopefully one of these creative midfielder: eriksen/moutinho/sneijder. Dream X1 After Jan (4-3-3): Lloris,Walker,Kaboul,Verts,BAE,Sandro,Eriksen,Dembele,Lennon/Townesend,Damaio,Bale. <333
SpursSnM
SpursSnM...... That's 16 players included in your starting XI mate.... I like your thinking ;-)
thfc1882whl
I personally hate it when we go in as favourites.I would love to see us actually scoring at least 2 in the first half and then getting a few early changes to give experience. I really want Gylfi to start and see what he can offer in a full game
Big Ron
Play bale in the hole behind ade and andros out on the left the rest will pick themselves and the game will be won! Need to mix things up a little to beat bus parkers as the lack of goals scares the hell out of me. Coys
Little spur
Lloris, Walker, Caulker, Jan, BAE, Parker, Sandro, Bale, Lennon, Siggy and Ade. I think he'll go with Ade and Defoe. Not overly bothered, think he has played it well so far. Just hope Gallas isn't in. Heard Dembele is injured and BAE is a bit strange, fit or signing for Chelski? Some of the names linked are silly, Will.i.am isn't going to leave a CL team half way through.
RAF Yid
I think that Dembele might be injured for this one, if so Parker will start.
Fanman
I agree with those saying that we should start Ade with Siggy behind him. As we will need to be more creative in order to break down Sunderland's bus.
Fanman
Defoe, doesn't do well in games where the opposition parks the bus.
Fanman
Is it confirmed dembele injured?. If so, it highlights the need for erikson to be bought. Siggy to start with andros on later to move the parked bus around if the scores are deadlocked. Agree with above post about Gallas needing a bigger break, and caulker is a fantastic replacement. My heart says 2-0, my head 1-1. Coys!

thfc1882whl....In some positions i have "/" (meaning 1 or the other) so infact there is 11 players you fool.

At last someone is listening to me... the player i couldnt stop mentioning in the summer... who i believed would be our Mods/VDV replacement....

Just heard latest Fergie rant, this time on Newcastle ?!!, saying Newcastle are a 'Wee club in North East' -- hahaha - then what is Sunderland then :-P
sydqcb5
Today is one of the most important days of the season which could shape where we will end up.
All top4 contenders have tough games.
WBA go to United, Arsenal play Newcastle, City goes to tough away game at Norwich, Chelski go to Everton and we travel North East to Sunderland.

If results go our way, we could go ahead of Arsenal by 6 points (they have a game in hand). Its a toughaway game, but I guess we are better prepared than ever.

My XI would be - Lloris, Walker, Caulker, Vertonghen, Naughton, Sandro, Dembele, Bale, Lennon, Siggurdsson, Defoe
sydqcb5
If dembele is injured I'm a lot less confident than I was before. Will be a struggle tomorrow but we should win. I'd go for siggy am ade up top tomorrow. Have a good feeling that will work like a treat tomorrow.
BrooksySpurs
SpursSnM.....Ahh but you start your post with '..... a starting X1 (should actually be XI) including'. I'm you no English professor but once you used the word 'including', it insinuated that these were the players you'd select plus some others. Had you used the word 'from' instead of 'including' then I wouldn't have had a little chuckle at your expense. Cheers, from one fool to an even bigger one.
thfc1882whl
I'm you no English........ where did that 'you' come from? Bloody keyboard
thfc1882whl
'Im you no english professor'...Yes I can tell your not mate lol. Go back to school kid.
SpursSnM
I think Sunderland's win over City could work to our advantage in that AVB could use it to reinforce concentration and make sure they're not under estimated. Although, they may still be on a high so problems may very well still arise. I am feeling confident however and would be disappointed if we came away with a single point, let alone none. Hope Bale carries on from where he left off and Defoe keeps up his scoring form. Adebayor needs to improve dramatically, Not done anything this season. I would also be in favour of dropping Kyle Walker at the earliest opportunity. He has been dreadful. However, I think my anger with his horrendous set piece deliveries and my confusion as to why AVB continuously allows him to take our corners and frees has clouded out any acknowledgement of anything positive he does in games of late.
TopSpur13
Brooksy, Dembele tweeted straight after game that his injury was not serious and he should be fit for Saturday clash I am sure he will play
sydqcb5
sunderland winning by 2-0...
shlok27
AVB has definitely got the squad more competitive. There's a couple like Livermore and Falque that are becoming a little remote from the pack but generally it's a competitive unit. I'd quite like to see Ekotto back and it probably makes sense for Dempsey and Siggy to get starts in these next couple of matches. We may even see Sandro and Vertonghen rested as well now that we have cover.
muttley
shmok27, thanks for your contribution......
ItalianYiddo
Looks like it's going to be a windy one. Usually swirls around at sunderland. Expecting a difficult game. Lloris, walker, dawson, caulker, vertonghen, townsend, sandro, dembele, bale, Adebayor, defoe. Subs: friedel, naughton, gallas, parker, lennon, siggurdsen, dempsey(livermore) Townsend to take the corners. "come on you spurs"
82spursdebut
prediction.....goalkeeper scoring !...lol
82spursdebut
No club has kept 4 clean sheet in a row this season. We have the opportunity to that today. COYS. WIN WIN WIN !!!
sydqcb5
If Sunderland park the bus it will be interesting to see whether AVB has developed any solutions to the problem. I expect Sunderland to clog-up the mid-field, to chase and harass us when we have the ball, shut down time and space and look to Fletcher to score from a set piece/corner. We have seen earlier in the season that these type of tactics stop us playing and give the initiative to the oppositon. If this is the case I think we should go with a 451 and drop DeFoe to the bench. Can't see that happening though. A difficult game in prospect. Hope we can win it.
Harry-Kari
All games are difficult in the PL now days and I genuinely feel there is at least 6 or possibly 7 teams that can qualify in the top four. It will all depend on the January window. Teams such as Liverpool, Everton, ourselves and a outsider will need to reinforce if we are going to break in to the top four as I feel over the season the two Manchester clubs will have enough to be in the top four probably first and second. Chelsea will come strong and will be difficult to get above they have the money to reinforce and Arsenal have done it so many times they have the experience. So for me to break in and come above Chelsea or Arsenal and keep the likes of Liverpool, Everton and an outsider below us we need to strengthen in Jan otherwise I can see top four being utd, city, Arsenal, Chelsea and those other teams competing as well. This is an opportunity to get CL so I hope we get a striker and a winger minimum.

I see Bale is linked to RM maybe he will go to fund the new stadium
thfan
R.I.P...Tony Greig.
82spursdebut
Sad indeed about Tony Greig. A legend of cricketing world in his own ways. Love his commentary. Ashes will never be the same without his voice. RIP
sydqcb5
Three points at lunch time means third place.
Norwich to beat CIteh, an away wins for WBA and Newcastle, puts Spurs within three points of Citeh, but still ten behind Utd. It's the festive season, it's OK to dream - or even believe! :o)
That perfect scenario just leaves tomorrows fixture between Everton and Chelsea to think about.
Would a draw be preferable to an Everton win? Is it more realistic to hope for Everton to fall away and for CHelsea to stay in touch? In other words, is the ultimate hope to finish top three, or to get fourth and hope that gives us CL football next season?
Hotspur 1882
Interesting...............aim high, achive high. Jan' transfer window last year.........we were in a position to possibly win the prem'.........sadly, we never followed through. Must be at least one january bargain out there !...lol
82spursdebut
I'd say there is more chance of us overhauling Citeh than Chelski, but unlikely let's face it. 4th however is still possible if we can take our chances. The difference between the first half of the season being just OK and not great was the loss to Wigan. A draw today would not be the end of the world but let's not throw it away with missed opportunities. Ade up top for me.
Love totty
This will be a hard game, this lot won't roll over like Villa U14s did last week, if they defend properly we will struggle to score as v Stoke and in the first half v Villa, we just didn't have the creativity to open them up. It is probably the wrong time to play Sunderland, bearing in mind their current run. If we want to finish in the top 4 then this, and similar games, are those we must win to keep Everton, Arsenal and WBA amongst others at bay.
Frank
an away game between x-mas and New year...let's hope the boys all turn up or we could be looking at a loss...
shedboy2
No Verts in the starting line-up today. He didn't have his best game against Villa, perhaps the rest will do him good. We've got a very physically strong and fast team out there today. Here's hoping for 3 points.
Fanman
win hear and i will start to believe
ghulamville
I hope Bale gets a start, despite playing his usual selfish no defending and 15 shots a game and no passes, he did manage to score 3 goals and that shouldnt be overlooked by the manager.
Viyyash-Ramosh
@Spurs83: Our starting team today: Lloris, Walker, Caulker, Dawson, Naughton, Lennon, Dembele, Sandro, Bale, Adebayor & Defoe
Oxfordspur
good rotation, personally i think he should have done it way beforetoday
ghulamville
Tough game today, wouldn't of rested vertonghen today!! Also think sigurdsson is well worth a start, his making stuff happen all the time Coys
Ibiza yiddo
good rotation, vertonghen needs a rest, not risking BAE. i really think that AVBs approach will lead to far fewer injuries
Guernman
was hoping to see BAE on the bench today....I think Daws will keep the boys honest...fingers crossed for the result...
shedboy2
Haven't all our clean sheets come from vert'n playing in cb? (or when he's played in cb it has been a clean sheet?) There is a difference in that wording, I'm not going mad.
Tottenham Hotcore
We have got atleast one ball playing CB in Caulker. Also if Dawson gets his cross field passes today, he can get Bale & Lennon inthe game. COYS.
sydqcb5
I would love to see vertonghen play every game, but he has spoken of how tiring the PL is, he has played much more than most and playing LB when he is not used to that much running. he needs the rest. this management team uses the very cutting edge processes to evaluate players. clearly they feel vertonghen needs resting. others would play him, then he picks up an injury and is out for many games. yes, we will miss him but better for one match on our terms than many matches out with injury.
Guernman
I also think that Vertonghen is due a rest. He's been an ever present this season. Good assessment Guernman.
Fanman
Not sure whether Sunderland will park the bus or have a go. If they have a go, we can catch them on the counter. If they park the bus, we may not be able to break through.
Fanman
the Citeh result will give them the confidence to come forward and have a go.... perfect.
Viyyash-Ramosh
already 2 occasions when Ade refused to pass to Bale in a good advanced position with space.... intrigying
Viyyash-Ramosh
Terrific run by Lennon and guess what, he makes the wrong choice.
Jables
Sandro is such a donkey sometimes, number of freekicks conceded for little gain
Viyyash-Ramosh
golden opportunity to score!
rahn DMC
Bloody hell Ade Gary Doherty himself would have scored that. Embarrassing miss
HuddersfieldYiddo
Sandro & Lennon have been brilliant so far, as has Dembele
HuddersfieldYiddo
Thanks Walker...
Fanman
How not to be a premiership defender
HuddersfieldYiddo
I was literally just about to write... we are giving way to many silly little fouls away in the wrong areas, especially when they have a dead ball specialist as good as larsson. Silly mistake by Walker.
rahn DMC
Get Walker of that pitch right now AVB. He is f##king woeful. Drop him, fine him just don't have him on the pitch when he can't even pass a football.
TopSpur13
Walker has had a poor season... His mistakes keep leading to goals against us, and we were playing so well...
Fanman
Sandro and Dembele 'brilliant' today lol.... Great delivery for goal, we will struggle with this lack of linkplay upfront. looks like Ade-Defoe may be 1 for history books
Viyyash-Ramosh
Walker deserves to BR dropped just for that!
Durbanspur
Why did AVB rotate the defense?
MrSpurs
Waker didnt concede the goal, it was a freekick that could have been defended in plenty of time and wasnt... Sandro has given more needless freekicks than Walker, yet he's 'brilliant'
Viyyash-Ramosh
I would bring Siggy on. The Sunderland defence look ok but once in a while we look like we're going to get round the back of them. That's where I think Siggy would be good to help unlock their defence.
rahn DMC
We are giving easy free kicks all over the pitch, but when Walker does an easy foul people are all over him. Cheeze!
Jables
I think our defence has been good, its Walker who messed up and allowed them to score. First making the mistake, then making the foul. Very poor from him, and has let the side down. Dembele Sandro and Lennon have been top class.
Fanman
i agree. walker has been pants all season and continues to be pants. he cannot defend, cannot pass and cannot shoot. he needs to be dropped
Cape Town Spurs
No one wants to take the ball forward. All sideways passing. The odd time we break forward, there's no one to do much with the ball. Not convinced with Ade and Defoe partenership.....there is none!. Defoe's been poor in my view. Hope another lecture at half time gets them playing.
Critical_Spur
Walker is a shadow of the player we saw last season. He clearly shows a lack of confidence everytime TV cameras show him in close-up. For this match, it makes no sense to replace him, but he should be dropped for next match.
AlexSpur
Viyyash-Ramosh, did you see Walkers foul? There was no way he was going to get the ball. He was just trying to make up for his mistake. I'd drop him if I was the manager. Its not the first time his mistakes have led to goals against us.
Fanman
Sunderland have been so poor aswell... Its frustrating...
Fanman
shlok27 you should rename yourself dork27 or just dork or dork-face
Cape Town Spurs
Not so much the foul VR but the silly mistake that gave the ball away before that!
Durbanspur
Another one that is far from the player we saw is Adebayor. He had all best chances to score and wasted all. A seasoned player like him cannot afford wasting so many chances. I would go for Siggs for 2nd half playing behind Defoe.
AlexSpur
Totally predictable. Lads had played really well and then a stupid free-kick from a position of strength, in reality the only way they looked likely to score. Will need something special now. To be fair to Sunderland they haven't parked the bus.
Harry-Kari
For me Ade has been very poor, missed an open goal, and hasn't done much elsewhere on the pitch. I'd take him off and get Siggy on.
Fanman
Everything too slow and telegraphed giving time to fill the spaces again. Let's hope the tempo increases 2nd half. JD off for Siggy after 10 mins if no change.
Love totty
Why did AVB rotate the defence? Because the season doesn't end at Xmas like Redknapp thought, two seasons running. Should be winning this game, stop gifting stupid free kicks.
ItalianYiddo
Shutup you feckin comedians and stop ripping into our players! Walkers made one mistake but hes actually had a good game so far hes be feeding lennon and has made a positive impact. Hes human he makes mistkes! If anyone needs to get ripped its ade...been poor so far again but apart from him and the scoreline its been a good half,COYS! Btw HuddYiddo you remember gary goherty lol.
SpursSnM
there is no defoe ade partnership and I doubt there ever will be, & yes, defoe has looked poor. fair enough to him, he's been sensational all season but we have NO-ONE ELSE and have not since 2009, so when he is poor and ade is basically just pants this season because he coul dnot give a toss then we are well and truly screwed. still, we dont need to sign anyone else...
Cape Town Spurs
Another top half, all that possesion and we still can't score, had sunderland not got the freekick it would have been 7 games 0-0 @ HT: But then we have kept the record in tack by not scoring ourselfs, phucking brilliant, smashed poor old villa, so un-less BALE OR DEFOE SCORE we are phucked over again. Anyone up for buying a striker send your request's to Levy?
spu 4 life
People are all over Walker because he has been terrible all season, not just that free-kick.... but ya I think it's the final straw for a few as it should be.
TopSpur13
Harry-Kari, agreed. Sunderland haven't parked the bus, but we have been much the better side. It was a good free-kick. Defending those types of free-kicks is very difficult. As its a lottery on where the ball will drop. O'neil will be over the moon. The game will get stretched towards the end, lets hope we can take our chances.
Fanman
Adebayor is lazy, over-paid and over-rated... he can be sensational but he chooses not to bother. on hos wages that is an f'ing crime of the highest order
Cape Town Spurs
Walker just seems branless at defending to me. Decent going forward though.
Fanman
Currently down to fourth on goal difference from Everton. :0(
Is Walker really playing that badly? Parker to replace him. Three at the back with Sandro further forward. Parker in front of back three? Maybe not with Dembele still on the pitch. Perhaps Parker for Sandro?
Hotspur 1882
Adebayor is not sharp enough anymore. If he had thrown himself at that ball and headed it instead of poking at it he would have scored. Hopefully we will have a big second half, like in the Vila game. I have never been a fan of Walker, not even last year. He doesn't bring anything to the team, can't pass, can't defend, has speed but looses the ball. Hurry up and bring back Ekotto, play Naughton at RB.
iwear#10
He's human and he made one mistake.... he's been useless all season, it's not just the tackle, it was a build up of poor performances and poor play and that tackle just pushed a few over the edge (myself included)
TopSpur13
adebayor couldn't put the ball in an open net from a yard out ffs, and he is considered world class and paid about 150K a week to do just that... that man is a joke of a footballer. everyone warned us.
Cape Town Spurs
Cape Town Spurs, Ade has been a let-down this season. His link-up play is non-existent, and he doesn't get any power behind anything he does. I'd take him off for Siggy right now.
Fanman
Hope Benni back soon then we can move Naughton to R back and give Walker a rest. Please get Siggy on soon
Big Ron
Bale, Ade and Defoe just don't pass to each other...
shedboy2
Why can't we produce goals or even half a chance from corner kicks? we certainly get enough of them.
iwear#10
Ade has been poor as a team player since his return to fitness. His attitude needs to improve.
Hotspur 1882
Playing an open team against Sunderland. Looks like he didn't do his homework AGAIN. Goodbye
01tottenham
walker is not decent going forwards at all... he is like lennon was a couple of seasons ago... runs fast in a straight line then goes over the line and crashes into the advertising hoarding or crosses the ball to no one and it bounces out for a goal kick. walker needs to be dropped and given some one on one coaching because he is a one trick pony and his only trick is pony
Cape Town Spurs
Deliveries from our own set pieces have been ridiculously poor, a few have gone straight out of play.
Guyver
Do we praise him for that...

how MON is allowed to stand on the touchline wearing the same colour coat as our kit is beyond me....he should have to put a bib on...
shedboy2
OK, we need a clinical finisher!
Durbanspur
Any other team would have got a penalty. That was a disgrace from the ref
philbill
dives all over the place in this match yet the ref just goes with reputation....consistency!!!
shedboy2
Poor subs both Lennon and Defoe should not be offf, we will sit back and concede, has AVB learnt nothing..
philbill
Well if bale is going to miss a match, it's probably best he misses the Reading game at WHL.
Guyver
I'm doing the Steffen Freund dance in my lounge! COYS. 3 points in the bag. Their keeper made two unbelievable saves, 2-1 not a reflection of our domination.
thenuge
We deserved the three points!
Durbanspur
Great win, our away form has really picked up under AVB. Set pieces still need work though.
Guyver
WHy no appeal from the club against Bale's previous two yellow cards. Both for so called diving, when the evidence proved that he was fouled. Haven't seen todays incident.
Hotspur 1882
Yes! We should of beaten them 4-1 though. We definately need a striker in the window. We look a good team at the moment. Ade and Defoe were both poor today.
Fanman
A great result with lots of good football. However, Walker is brain dead when it comes to football and Dawson and Caulker are useful back-ups but I wouldn't like to see them playing as a pair too often. Referee wants shooting again. Well done AVB and the lads.
Harry-Kari
Tense at the end but we have the 3 points. Really need Gylfi on as a regular. Hope Benni not being mothballed. We need him back
Big Ron
philbill, the subs made us lose our width, but we didn't drop-off and defend. We deserved the three points, but Defoe and Ade should of scored. Ade should of got 2!
Fanman
I don't think either Ade or Defoe played that badly, but they missed some sitters that could have cost us.
Guyver
Great win, it's not often that we get all 3 points at the SOL.
Cleveland ARTSPURS
3 points. I'll take it. AVB has to do a Fergie style attack on the refs about booking Bale, it's beyond ridiculous. Am I right in thinking the letter of the law states it's not diving if there is any contact no matter how minimal...
TopSpur13
If Walker had Corluka's brain he'd be almost world class.
Guyver
Definite foul on Bale - don't think you can appeal a yellow, can you? Should've won at a canter, instead no nails left. Phew!
Love totty
despite the macho tackling and fan-worship, Sandro is definitely the weak link in this team. its like watching Gallas play in midfield (especially with the ball).... clung on desperately in the end, like a good Top4 would... not... have to.
Viyyash-Ramosh
I hope that Sigurdsson or Townsend starts on the left against Reading. Bale is fantastic, but he needs to get his head-up when making those marauding runs.
Fanman
and no topspurs, you are wrong in thinking that.... the contact has to be SUFFICIENT to induce the fall, which ... again... with Bale it was nowhere close to being..
Viyyash-Ramosh
Whhhoooppppeee...at last, a bit of luck !..at sunderland, of all places. Great win...............very good xmas period...3 x wins and a draw...... Well done spurs...avb and co'......need to build on this new years day. New striker....january. Corners....still need to be better...( inswinging please....and prefer bale in the box, with walker on halfway line central )

And a shout out to Kyle Naughton. Brilliant performance and a valuable squad player for the future!
TopSpur13
Good win puts us in 3rd, but probably after tomorrow back into 4th. I don't mind Defoe and Ade not scoring as long as we win, but, the problem is when strikers start missing easy goals their confidence drops...not good! Great ball from Dempsey to Ade by the way!
mountainyid
Viyyash-Ramosh if Sandro is the weak link that's a good sign for Spurs. He did give the ball away too much today though.
Guyver
Vinyash - you almost sound upset that we won. Is that the case? If so why are you on a forum like this?
SpuriousLife
We always make it hard for ouselves. You know sunderland have a great deadball specialist in Larsson yet we continue to give needless freekicks away in dangerous positions, and ade could have made it a lot more comfortable if he had his shooting boots on. All in All happy with the 3 points, sunderland is a hard place to go, if we could just be a bit smarter in our play we really have the makings of a special team. Dembele is making me miss Modric less and less, although i still feel we need a playmaker. Also seeing signs of Dempsey that i reallly like, like his back heel through ball today. 6 Points from 2 away games over the festive season, happy spurs fan atm.

Well Bale in that Interview said what I believed to be through, AVB has to launch an attack for him!

Good win, keeping the pressure on the other clubs; well done Spurs!
MrSpurs
Only Defoe could hit a player from 3 yards....again!

Brought parker on to keep possession in the midfield. What did we do?...Hoof back to them and invited undue pressure.

BIG C - Man of the Match = LENNON!...surely that can't be allowed?!!!

If we'd only held out at Everton for a couple more mins, we'd be joint 2nd! But of course all teams can play the "if only" game.
Guyver

Great Win, 3 pts and 3rd place. Let´s hope Chelsea and Everton cancel each other and get themselves a draw plus United to sink WBA. Regarding our match, why should we get an easy win if we can get a thriller ending ?? Spurs´ way I guess, but it makes me suffer too much. AVB has lots to ponder about Walker´s and Ade´s situation. They were absolutely clueless today. Am I right to say that Bale has been bookedfor the 5th time and cannot play next match ?? If so, I would start Sigurdssom and Dempey rathern than Bale and Ade. And, also play Verts as LB and Naughton as RB. Walker needs time to get himself together again.
AlexSpur
I think AVB's subs weakened the team? He's a good manager, but his substitutions are strange?
Fanman
They have slow motioned "the dive"and the unanimous verdict is penalty. So not only we don't get the penalty Bale misses the next match. Yet again poor refereeing, not so much for not giving the pen but for booking for diving when not 100% certain.
ItalianYiddo
Dembele was great in the 1st half, but had a quiet second half. Stopped driving forward and just sat back to win the ball and pass it. Instructions from the manager perhaps? The good thing is that we're creating chances. Ade and Defoe should of scored...
Fanman
ItalianYiddo
This really does need looking into. Bale is for some reason routinely booked when being tripped or kicked. The likes of Suarez and many others are lauded as great players!
Meanwhile Spurs lose a key man for no reason.
Hotspur 1882
I can't believe both Ade and Defoe just missed their easy chances!
Fanman
Good win, wider than the score suggests, if we could finish we would be away and gone. The only down side is that yet another referee books Bale for getting fouled, it should have been a bloody penalty, it would never happen if he played for Man U the bloody refs wouldn't dare. Gardner caught his knee, and had an arm across his chest, how the bloody hell can he not go down. If some of these muppets with the whistle had played the bloody game they might understand, why the bloody hell should he go down, he was in, he had done Gardner, now we miss him for Reading game. The only saving grace is that we should be able to do them without him, and he then comes back in with a clean sheet.
Frank
The top and bottom of it is that many of the refs in todays PL are just incompetent, there are very few who meet the standards that prevailed a few seasons ago.
Frank
It's obvious! The answer to our inability to score from corners - sign Carlos Cuellar. Get your chequebook out Dan.
Love totty
I think Defoe and Lennon were taken off to prepare for Sunderland's last throw of the dice, the arial bombardment. I think that's why Caulker and Dawson started the game.
Guyver
I agree Fanman, sometimes the best form of defence is attack and Lennon was one of the best players on the pitch today. Yet again Ade was very poor. We know Spurs find it difficult to defend a 1 goal lead so its asking for trouble. I would always play Defoe at the moment as his confidence is high and he is scoring goals. Like to see Siggy play against Reading as Bale is suspended.
philbill
Really happy with the 3 points. Ade and Defoe really not working well and really hope someone is coming in Jan if only to kick-start them into working for the team! One selfish player upfront is tough; but one selfish player and one who couldn't give a s*** is going to cost us long term. Naughton and Daws both put in good shifts today and Lennon put on his shooting boots! Our GK had a great game and even their goal was after he made a great initial save. Going to bed happy now!
whitechina
What a really super piece of skill from Lennon both to play himself through and then slot it home. Messi-esque. And Hugo was immense too. If we were to buy a playmaker as everyone seems to want, we might well lose the power through midfield we've got now. Dempsey looked class again when he came on and should start against Reading.
Love totty
I agree with Frank. Well said on both posts. What is the world coming to!. :0.
asherthesmasher
Yet another completely dominant performance, against a team that a few days ago had beaten City. I have to admit, i'm getting more and more excited about AVB. We are playing an almost continental slow, slow, quick game - the kind of football pundits drool over in post match international debates when England have lost again to a top international team. Nullifying the opposition, attention to detail, squad rotation (brilliant resting of Verts and Gallas today), possession followed by incisive threaded balls, plenty of shots. Its all about tactics and strategy to weigh the odds in our favour. And i still think AVB is being pragmatic with the team shape until he gets the right players in for his favour 4-3-3. Passion, competing in all competitions, winning trophies. Still in Europe. Its all there for us if we can be patient and not call for people's head after every poor result. I really hope Levy can bring in 2 or 3 in January to give AVB more options from the bench attacking-wise.
StillRickyVilla
How impressive is our away form. Had we won at Everton that would be seven away wins.
asherthesmasher
SRV- AVB is the man. I have backed him from day one. Something i am proud of because like most fans, i can be fickle.
asherthesmasher
Love totty, it's our home games against teams who park the bus where a playmaker is missed. We've only scored 14 goals at home and 22 goals in away games. No other team in the league has scored more away goals than home goals.
Guyver
Sandro is our 'weak link ' , we 'clung on desperately ' in the end and the contact on Bale was 'nowhere close to being sufficient'.Take a bow Mr Viyyash-Ramosh, you've just managed to get me to send my second post ever !! I always thought this forum was for Spurs fans to air their thoughts and give out positive vibes and if needed CONSTRUCTIVE criticism if things were not going well.We win our second away game in 4 days, we will be in the top 4 going into the new year and with our injuries coming back slowly our whole picture is getting brighter.Your negativity sickens me and as a Spurs fan for over 40 years I really cannot get into your way of thinking .I've just had a thought that your comments might be in cheek- if so massive apology !!!
cypyid
Ain't that the truth Guyver. We really could do with a playmaker in January.
asherthesmasher
Ash, yep i certainly backed him from day one too because i felt he had all the technical ability, attributes and motivation to be a success. My only fear from the start was the unfair media negativity towards him which had in turn negatively influenced our own fans' attitude (particularly as Harry, wrongly in my opinion, had been such a crowd favourite) which i felt may have in turn got back to the dressing room making his job impossible. In light of this and the fact we sold our best players in the summer and had critical injuries to contend with, AVB has done an absolutely monumental job so far. Long way to go, but outstanding stuff so far. Just need Levy to support him in the transfer market. I'd like to see VDV properly replaced with a magician playing just off the front-man. Don't ask me who though.
StillRickyVilla
make that 'tonuge in cheek 'sorry

looked a better TEAM when Dempsey came on for Defoe... think Defoe and Ade have agendas to be topgun, not playing as a pair this yr at all compoared to last season... v.glad we took te pts and we got the luck our superiority in the 1st 75mins showed, still need to get confidence to close out leads... push up and have the confidence to not play so deep inviting the inevitable kitchen-sink approach of losing teams with 10mins to go... looks like abit of Arse's good fortune now coming to us, at long last.... last word to Kyle Naughton, great performance, intelligence with composure and with Lennon MOTM
Viyyash-Ramosh
Good performance again and a great result, only down side for me is the Defoe/Ade partnership.......it just isn't working........there doesn't appear to be any understanding between them at all, our attacking play looks so much better with Dempsey playing alongside or just behind Ade.
TQ2Spurs
philbill, Agreed. I'd like Siggy to come straight in for Bale and Dempsey in for Ade. Dempsey is looking dangerous, and takes the fight to the opposition. He also has good passing vision.

Went to the match lads an thought we were fantastic. First half we played pretty football an should've been ahead but typical sloppy free kick concedes. Second half was a joy. Fantastic football solid defending am should've had a blatant pen and many more goals. Ade was bad an perhaps walker as well but other than that the rest were fantastic. An avbs subs were spot on. Completely closed the game out whilst still being a threat going forward. Oh an the fans were immense. COYS!!!

@cypyid well said.. Well played Lennon , Sandro and Lloris. Ade just coasts too much and needs to take chances. Half time score at Stoke shows how much they rely on the rugby tackles made by Shawcross to keep opponents from scoring.
TQ2Spurs
SpurON, I think we'll get a playmaker and a striker. Just a feeling.
Fanman
Frank I don't totally agree with you regarding Bale's penalty claim. Yes the reply clearly shows the Sunderland player's knee went into Bale's knee and so deems a penalty. However, yet again Bale did himself no justice because he deliberately pulled his foot back to make it look like the Sunderland player had tripped him. Now the question is why does he do that? If he didn't do that and just went down when the knee made contact then I'm sure the penalty would have been given. What Bale did was no better than when a player goes down and holds his head and the replay shows the contact never touch his head it was his chest or some other part of his body.
thfan
Love the way AVB wears the Tottenham heart on his sleeve ,shows every emotion .Really good to see a manager act like a fan instead of calling them idiots ,refreshing change .

AVB is becoming a Spurs legend ,quality
big cockeral
what about THudd, Livermore and even Carroll.... we have enough quality and numbers in midfield with a settled hierachy... might need to change Defoe-Ade if they continue to play against each other, so unlike last season when they bought had huge incentives to play for the team and thus get starts or perm. contract
Viyyash-Ramosh
Regarding the performance I thought we did well but we could have lost two points once again through poor finishing mainly from Ade. Against better teams we will be punished just like we have in previous games. We need a striker. incidentally Defoe's game and goal scoring has not been so good since Ade returned to the line up and I realy don't think they are playing together maybe as someone suggests there is a battle going on as individuals and if I was to choose one it would be Defoe because imo he has stepped up and scored goals something Ade hasn't done.

AVB has done well and is improving all the time. As I have said before we still need strengthening in January. Lennon today was very good and I see he is improving slowly just as Defoe has been and Dawson and I can see improvements in Siggy and Dempsey from when they first came so what AVB and his team are doing in training is coming through slowly through games. Well done lads.
thfan
Absolutely Big C. There was a moment in the second half when things were getting nervy and i looked at my mate in the pub and my mate's face (like mine i imagine) was a complete bag of nerves and passion. Then the camera panned to AVB and the expression on AVB's face was exactly the same! AVB Tottenham legend. I love that man!
StillRickyVilla
Adebayor can`t keep missing sitters & then blame a partnership.
Missed one with defoe & one with dempsey ,both were Sunday league opportunities which if go in the argument becomes irrelevant .

No formation works when easy chances are not converted

StillRickyVilla +1
big cockeral
we need a play maker to play behind a striker one that can open up defence when the opposition park the bus. I would keep Dempsey and Siggy though for away games and back up. I also know we need a striker and I wouldn't be upset if Ade goes cash in on him because I really don't think he is contributing much and it is clear him and Defoe are not linking up. Another addition would be a winger to cover Bale and Lennon in case they get injured.

Big C I agree AVB is coming good and I love the way he gets excited and shows his emotions.
thfan
Right again Big C. I'll happily take a striking partnership that creates 2 or 3 open goals for each of them! Main thing is they got into the positions, and created chances for themselves. We know they can both score. It would have been 4-1 on another day. As it stands we are 2nd top goal scorers in the entire league so its not really that bad is it.
StillRickyVilla
I don't buy the "Ade's not trying argument", it's his style and demeanour but he puts himself about. True he's not clinical but he gets his share and plays for the team. I want to see him and Dempsey have a settled run if he doesn't go the ACN.
Love totty
Agree or disagree ?

Dembele had a free kick against him & a yellow card for arm around the waist , giving Sunderland a great opportunity

Bale had an arm around his waist ,went down ,no penalty & he got carded .
Both were similar IMO so i have to stand up for Bale on this one .
big cockeral
Love totty, its the age old problem of football fans (and coaches) in this country mistaking people running about like headless chickens and playing with apparent 'passion' - with effective football. Its simply not the case. Its the same as the common mis-conception on here that AVB's slow, slow, quick possession game is not as effective as a blood & thunder, whack the ball down the channels and get the ball in the box as quickly as possible style. 1. AVB's method is far far more sustainable over the course of a whole season and future seasons because it is less taxing physically on the players and 2. At the end of every game, regardless of the result, we seem to have far more shots, far more possession and generally more goals than the opposition playing this way! Perhaps something for the moaners to consider?
StillRickyVilla
READING 1-WET SCUM SPAM 0 stats read; Reading had two shots all game 1 on target, 1 off target some game that was, the football is suffering from headache, it took a hell of a kicking.
spu 4 life
This bo//ox about Bale diving, ok same goes for all players when NO contact takes place is right, then it's yellow, but the guy caught him with his knee which will make it difficult at that speed to stay upright, Point is have any of you ever been walking and clipped a pavement and found yourself flying foward, if you did it running would you be able to stay on your feet?
spu 4 life
Our worst performance and result of the season was Wigan at home, we were apparently slow and clueless and some idiots on here (who have since gone very quiet) were saying AVB was going to be fired by Xmas. Yet even in that horrible game we had 10 shots on target to their 4. I'm telling you, AVB is the man.
StillRickyVilla

StillRickyVilla
Yeah, I'm throwing the boot into Viyyash as well. Sandro weak link, Bale diving, I suppose you thought 21.12.12 was the end as well? Some great posts SRV. I am with you all the way, I called for AVB's appointment when Coopsie was still floating around on here. Definately one of the first admirers even during the Porto days, that team was quality. On occasions his tactics have not always worked, but at least he shows he is thinking about the game, the players well being, the likely opposition, the fixture list. Great analogy about our slow, slow quick game. The season is not a sprint and at the moment we look very assured and composed in the competiton. Big European nights to look forward too, a decent cup run expected, AVB is the perfect man for the job.........and Steffen Freund knows it as well! COYS
thenuge
The other fallacy bandied about by the moaners on here (desperately looking to type something negative) is that we have actually under-performed because we need 70 points to finish top 4 and we are behind that target. Well, no actually. Out of the last 10 seasons, 70 points has only been required for a top 4 finish in 3 of those years. And so we are very much on target. If we carry on with this points game/pts ratio the odds are very much stacked in our favour for a Top 4 finish. And that's whilst competing properly in Europe.
StillRickyVilla
We need to buy Ba, end of story.
Fanman
Never really followed fulham but Dempsey has great vision and if we could finish chances would probably have 7-8 assists this season, really seems to be settling now and you can see his confidence, very unselfish and works hard for the team, he really is my type of player. Ade is struggling but look at it this way if he does start to reach the heights of last season we will be amazing, I know some people say we've seen the best when he was trying to earn a contract but let's back him and see if he can prove us wrong. I read someone say Sandro was the weak link, I'm sorry but if he is then we have nothing to worry about jeez!. I saw a many positives today including swapping both centre backs, Lloris was very commanding, wingers played well, very impressed and very proud to be a tottenham fan.

I think Viyash-Ramosh's posts need to be taken with a pinch of salt. He has got to be on a wind-up. The Sandro being the weak-link was a funny one. Also his praising of Sunderland fans singing 'Gareth Bale he looks like a champ' (of course they were singing 'chimp') was a classic. He's either on a wind-up or is completely clueless about football and football fans. One or the other.

Gareth re: diving:
"There is nothing I can do about it - the referees have to look a bit closer. If I get contact there it is a penalty or free kick. What do you expect me to do if I there is contact and I go over - hit my head on the floor? I am not going to stop going because it is a foul. "People can say what they want, it doesn't bother me. It's a foul and I know it myself." Andre Villas-Boas: "It's a big mistake from the ref. I understand that reputations are sometimes created from the outside and it's a bit unfair. If you see the images [Craig] Gardner doesn't focus on the ball, he goes to the player and he clips him.

ghulamville
AVB's management of ADE/Defoe has been very impressive. As a partnership it clearly isn’t working yet, and on the back of a midweek game with a potentially tough away game today, he could easily have dropped one and played Dempsey/Gylfi. But he stuck with it. It sends out the message that he’s willing to give individual players/partnerships/tactics a fair crack of the whip, without any kneejerk reaction if things don’t quite go to plan. And taking off Defoe rather Ade was a nice touch. The other way round and it could easily have been interpreted that Defoe has been established as No. 1. Very good from a manager apparently lacking man-management skills.
GARYKIR
i tell you something we simply have to keep winning because those up the road are looking irresistable

The gooners just whooped Newcastle 7-3. Walcott scored a hatrick. His 3rd goal has to be seen to be believed! Damn gooners...

SRV - The competition for 4th will be fierce this year so I'm confident that 70 points will be needed. This last run of form has turned what looked like a lost cause into a real possibility now so AVB should definitely not be sacked.:) With a better start though we could have been in the title race but that was always unlikely.
Love totty
ghulamville, agreed. They are looking smooth in attack. We need to get a clinical finisher. Newcastle are looking poor defensively, I'm sure that Ba would jump at the chance to join us.

Love totty, agreed. We didn't have a great start with Dembele, Dempsey and Ade coming late and the team having to adjust to AVB's tactics. Basically weare in transition, but looking fitter and stronger now. I hope that we can do well against Reading without Bale. I think AVB will stick with his 4-4-2 formation and play Dempsey on the left.
Fanman
Great result, could and maybe should have been more but now's not the time for that. Let's enjoy the holiday period so far, with or without Bale, Reading will be relatively easy. Shame you can't appeal against yellow cards because Bale has had at least two wrongly given for simulation. I don't think any of us have ever been able to run as fast as him, so it's impossible to know what effect that contact would have. If a yellow was deserved today, it was Defoe who should have got it, I rate Defoe highly but that was a disgraceful bit of cheating today. Oh and while I'm at it, I'm going to be dishing myself up some humble pie this evening as Dempsey is looking better every time I see him, I would now start him ahead of Adebayor. Still think we need to spend in January but I'm also starting to believe that Dempsey has a great deal to offer as a squad player. Made a big difference when introduced today.

thfc1882whl, agreed on Dempsey. He thrugh back-heel to ade should of been 3-1 and an assist for him.

It's time to rest JD against Reading I think, and give both Dempsey and Siggy starts supporting Ade. We'll need a bit more incision with Bale out.
Love totty
Bale being banded for the next match might be a blessing in disguise, we need to give the guy a rest at some point and Reading at home is a good as any game. We should be able to beat Reading without the need for Bale IMO. Like to see Townsend given a go rather than say Dempsey who isn't suited to wing position in a team that counter attacks as quickly as we do.
MrSpurs
great win for the team today. 3rd is nice for now. Our road form is better than its been for years under AVB. His rotation and use of squad depth is miles better than Harry's ever was and thats what we were all asking for wasnt it? its nice to see the likes of naughton and caulker getting run outs with the first team. The guys on the bench under harry looked miserable, remember how shellshocked Niko would look every game harry just left him sitting there? The team is getting Kaboul, BAE and Parker back. If we can get a striker/playmaker in january we shud be rock solid contenders for 3rd or 4th place fellas. COYS.

We could use a playmaker, but a clinical striker is an absolute must.
Fanman
Sneijder, has said that its best if he leaves Inter. The media puts us and united in the running. I don't think that United will buy him as they have Kagawa, Carrick, Scholes and Rooney. I'd like him to come to Spurs, not sure if I'd want to break up Sandro and Dembele though.
Fanman
It'll definitely be Ade and Defoe again v Reading with Lennon and Dempsey buzzing in and around them. I am certain we will have at least treble the shots Reading do and probably around 65-70% of the possession, but as always, you can't guarantee anything in football. Coventry in the Cup will be a good game to rest one or two and still progress comfortably.
StillRickyVilla
Bale was bound to get a yellow sometime. Wouldn't it have been much worse if he had got it at the QPR game and missed Man U?
Big Ron
Huge win for Arsenal and as much as I hate to say they are back and they do something our lads just don't seem to do and that is score a shed load of goals. This is something I want us to improve on when we are in the lead and comfortable. We never seem to go on a score more goals we start going defensive and holding on to what we have instead of getting more goals which may well be very important at the end of the season.

It is that never stop or give in attitude that is the difference between success and failure. Arsenal have it, Utd have it, City showed it last season in the last game, Chelsea have it but I really don't think we have it, yet.

This is why imo Arsenal always get top four especially recently because they haven't been the better team at times but they know how to keep going and never give in and they take their opportunities against teams to increase their goal difference. Something we need to get throughout our team.
thfan
I hope Defoe and Ade watch match of the day tonight and watch closely the Ar$enal game. Hopefully a lesson on finishing. ALL goals (both sides) were clinical.

Re AVB, just loving the way he is going about managing the team. Has anyone noticed and wondered why he has stopped crouching on the touchline? Perhaps a sign of confidence, contentment or just acting cool?!!!

Also, re Ade/Defoe pairing.... I am sure in my mind that the reason he keeps giving them both a chance together is that they MUST be working on something on the training ground Obviously not clicked yet, but boy as and when it does, some team is gonna get a real hiding from us!!

Someone mentioned the impressions on the faces of the subs, the only person I have seen looking miserable lately has been Jake Livermore. But I blame him for that as he has been given ample opportunities to stake a claim and I don’t think he will get much look in from here on.
Critical_Spur
Bale will not be missed against Reading we have enough to deal with his loss and it is better it has happened now rather than later. maybe he could stop leaving this foot behind when it was his knee that was caught and stop being so theatrical and when he hasn't been touched and he has dived get up straight away. He is half to blame because he clearly is theatrical and has at times faked it.

however, so do many players play for a foul, he is just not good at it.

As I said early post the contact was his knee and he deliberately left his foot behind to play for the foul so the ref got it half wrong and half right and Bale has to take blame for his half. If he had not left his foot behind and just gone down with the knee contact then there would have been more chance of him getting the penalty or at least an argument to support his claim.

Most footballers are cheats, they roll about when they have hardly been touched. They make out they have been hurt when it is obvious the contact couldn't hurt them especially when it is on the shin pads and barely any impact and they grab each others shirts, throw themselves down and claim handballs, offsides and throws when there not. Wimps, cheats and theatrical most of them including Bale. He is will get over it they all do and we the fans will see it again and again from all teams and their managers.
thfan
Critical_Spur I think the players look happy more happy then they did at the start of the season which maybe due to their better understanding of what AVB is doing.

just mentioned Arsenal goals in previous posts and I agree our strikers have missed good chances today. I think Ade has been average to poor all season and I hope if he is staying and playing that he bang in some goals and clicks with Defoe but I still think we need an extra striker.
thfan
p.s Livermore seems a nice lad but I have never thought he was good enough for a team that potentially is trying to establish itself as a top four. he needs loaning out to a PL side to get some games and be assessed. We are progressing and for him to get in the team he needs to step up and have something special or different and unfortunately I don't see it in him yet but he may develop with some regular football time.
thfan
One other observation I would make about AVB is that amongst numerous attributes that we feel he has, I would include brave and bold in his decision making. How many here were dreading the new look back four in today's game. It paid off and gave a rest to Vert and Gallas. Also, many want to see Parker start the game, but AVB chooses to work him back gradually. The same applied to the earlier Lloris/Brad situation. AVB seems a man that makes ALL his own decisions. I bet he eats and sleeps football. All-in-all, there is life after Harry. Great ride and long may it cotinue. COYS!
Critical_Spur
Ade and Defoe's finishing was really poor today. Ade should of tried to curl the ball around the keeper, and Defoe should of hit it first time. Two clueless strikers. I think we should just sign Ba. Newcastle are looking shocking and Ba is still scoring. With the service he'd get from our players he'd be a hit. He would of certainly finished Defoe's and Ade's first chance today, Ade's second was a bit more tricky. Ba is our best option. Harsh on Newcastle, but it has to be done.
Fanman
thfan, I agree about Livermore. I think he and several others may be loaned ot in January. It's done Rose no harm to be out there playing regularly.

When Benny returns I would like to see Walker given a rest and Naughton tried out on the right. Heard so much about him presently playing on the wrong side, I can't wait to see what he is capable of in his favoured position.
Critical_Spur
Well done avb on your outstanding Xmas results. Lets hope our streak doesn't blind levy into thinking that a quality reinforcement isn't required. Well done to all, you've made my Xmas.
van der haart lane
Critical, you are right about AVB. He played the Lloris/Brad situation perfectly despite what Harry's idiotic friends in the media were saying. Gradually integrating Lloris into the team/new surroundings and now we are reaping the benefits of that. We've got Hugo in excellent form and we didn't ostracise Brad in the process. So much so that he's signed a new contract! Re. the rotation of the squad, it is clear that we now have one eye on player fitness levels and will rest players when it is required like we did with Verts today. Looking back at Harry playing the same 11 regardless of fitness or knocks and telling them to just 'go for it' at full pelt match after match is now like looking back into the stone age. God, no wonder we were phucked from January onwards every year. It is criminal we never won anything with the team Harry had. Whilst player for player AVB has a weaker team now, we are maximising the squad far far better. We just need a couple of stella signings to make up for the loss of VDV and Modric. Perhaps Levy will bring in the likes of Moutinho and Willian as AVB requested. We need them if we want to compete with Man U, Man C, Chelsea and Arse.
StillRickyVilla
SRV, I think the same will happen with Benny as per Parker. No start as soon as he returns, but ease him back. As for the burn-out of yesteryears (under 'arry). I expect rotation to be ongoing and hopefully the FA Cup (depending on who we draw) may still give some of the fringe players (& Benny) some time to progress. With a couple of signings in January, we should be well kitted for a more productive 2nd half.
Critical_Spur
StillRickyVilla, good post mate. As much as I liked Harry, he never rotated the squad.
Fanman
the team seem to be getting better by the week. the players seem to be more in tune with the managers needs, tactics and each other and as usual everyone seems to be pulling in the same direction. AVB looks far more relaxed and comfortable with his position and regardless of whether we bring in a new player or three, I feel we are heading in the right direction

We just need to keep going. I will not give much attention to Arsenal result. It is not as emphatic as it looks. Any other decent defending team would have keep Arsenal quiet.
May be Wenger will think he has agood team and not buy anyone.
sydqcb5
You fools, this was bales last game that the yellow card touting up system counted before it got resetted for the new year, so even if he got booked in the qpr game he would of been able to play against manure...does anyone know if yellow cards can be rescinded?
SpursSnM
For me ba would be no better than ade. We want to be top four poss challenging for title. If we are gonna sign so am so to he a first tea,er them go for it an make it a world class one at that like llorente. They are available we just have to dig in a bit which really shouldn't be a problem
BrooksySpurs
Levy will never go for Ba. He will never buy a player who costs 7.5m + 80k a week but no insurance can be taken given his knee condition. This is also reason why clubs havent signed him in summer . It looks a good punt given his record, but I really cant see Levy doing this deal
sydqcb5
thfan...... Today was the last game that the 5 yellow cards would have counted. Slate wiped clean from January 1st.
thfc1882whl
SpursSnM.... sorry to repeat your post mate, hadn't got that far down yet and in answer to your question. No, yellow cards cannot be rescinded or even appealed against.
thfc1882whl
SilwalYidI wouldn't welcome Ba at all. We'd end up in the samee situation as we did with King. A highly skilled player out half the time with injury but still having to play him. too much of a liability to have him play for us seeing as we are pushing for Cl as well as winning domestic cups. he wouldn't be able to stand the amount of games we play. they can keep him and we can get in a young FIT player who isn't prone to injuries due to an already suspect knee.
chrishove123
The key aspect of our season so far has been the professionalism shown by club, coaching staff & players. Whether its win loose or draw, we just show the same sense of calmness. When things dont go well, there is no yelling or shouting or throwing excuses around. Players also not thrown their toys out of pram when they dont start. Likes of Dawson, Lloris, Gylfi have been exceptional.

We are largely under the radar now. We just have to forget the rest and just stay professional, take game by game. We need one player in Jan. Hopefully we get some one like Moutinho or Eriksen and push on.
sydqcb5
doesnt RVP fall under the same category?;injuryprone. They both are banging goals for fun at the moment
SilwalYid
A easy win made difficult by yet again giving endless silly fouls away around our penalty area. When will Walker and co get it into their heads teams like Sunderland are only dangerous from set-pieces?? Mayb Defoe and ade should take a look at Segession and see how to hold up the ball and win freekicks too! Major problems with Ade he seems a one goal in every 5 chances striker, so we clearly need another VdV type player to pick opposing teams defensive locks to create enough chances for him to score in a game?? lol
WestStandEnclosure
yes silly fouls but not helped by the sunderland players backing in and as soon as they felt contact diving over....referees have to be stronger, have to re-affirm that contact IS part of the game. they should book players for diving BUT they are supposed to be SURE it was a dive...if they're guessing at dives what else are they guessing at? Bale is getting punished twice -once for not getting the foul and then again a yellow card...perhaps he should do a Ronaldo and sit on the floor with his arms raised, I hated it but it got Ronnie so many free kicks....
shedboy2
Awesome display from the boys, AVB is simply a class act. Lloris oozes confidence, with Friedel today we probably would have drawn. I thought Ade was poor today although he certainly looked better once Defoe came off, yes he missed a sitter and a one on one, but everyone misses chances. His hold up/link up play was not that bad in the latter stages, he also made a very good headed clearance in the last minutes, something that normally gets overlooked when playing as a striker. For me he did his bit for the team. Lennon was probably MOM, although Lloris was also outstanding. As for the Bale incident, the referee only gets one look, my first reaction was penalty and that's without being bias. I don't think we've won at Sunderland for 7 years so well done all. COYS
yiddyboy
Great performance, only disappointment is the comments during the game. Aren't we fickle. Sandro and Dembele have been brilliant, Lloris assured, Naughton looks a very good back up. AVB has got it spot on recently. His rotation of Gallas probably the highlight. Still think we need another option up front, hopefully a player who can play wide as well and Moutinho. The rest I am happy about, a little unsure of the BAE situation though??
RAF Yid
StillRickyVilla, Can't you enjoy the great victory without having yet another rant against our former head coach, who saved our club from relegation, gave our club it's first ever Champions League experience, and gave us a taste for the first time since the sixties of what it's like to win BIG TIME CL (European Cup) games, against the likes of AC MIlan and Inter on the journey to the quarter final of Champions League. And have you forgotten the beautiful football the team played last season that got us into an end of season official CL qualifying position for only the second time in the clubs history. Who got us the first top 4 spot? And yet you describe Harry Redknapp as the Tottenham coach who took the club "back into the stone age", when the real truth is it was Redknapp who got THFC back onto the map as a 'BIG TIME' football club again, playing beautiful, for the first time since the eighties. And he achieved all this on a much smaller player personal budget than Stoke City! As for AVB, well he is improving game after game and I am really enjoying watching the team play, and I sincerely hope he can take our club up to the next level. That he can do even better than Harry! But for you to come on here and repeatedly slag off Redknapp, after all he did for our club, is disgrace, and only confirms you utter disdain for Harry Redknapp the man, not the football coach!

In the opening weeks of the AVB regime, the majority opinion on VS was that hiring AVB was a mistake. I expressed cautious optimism, and was often mocked for it. Indeed, when I wrote before the ManU match that there was no reason we couldn't win, and then we did, some wrote that there was nothing to what I wrote because even a broken clock is right once every twelve hours. I also wrote that I would be happy and would feel vindicated if we all thought by December that AVB had turned things around and had the team playing successfully in his style.

Happy I am indeed now and we can see that AVB has the team collecting many points. We're in the top four as December comes to an end. Shouldn't we conclude that D.L. made a good choice when he changed managers (or replaced a manager with this particular head coach)? On the present evidence, I'm hoping AVB is at N17 for a long stay. The stability for many expressed a desire may be here now with AVB.

Now D.L. needs to tweek the roster and bring in a couple of players to complete this year's needs. We surely could use a Moutinho or someone else to create more than we have now, and going solely with Defoe and Adebayor surely is a highly risky route to go from now through May. But surely now is past time to get behind the AVB project. Huzzah and praises in the highest!

Total knobhead
pelebro, mate, stop reading The Sun. Redknapp is a poor, poor coach and not only that displayed complete disdain for our club and its supporters on numerous occasions. One trophy in 30 years and that was achieved by bankrupting a club who have never recovered! Look, we were never going to get relegated (are there still people out there taken in by the 2 points from 8 games strapline) and then he was lucky enough to catch lightening in the bottle with that team of Friedal, BAE, King, Kaboul, Walker, Parker, Modric, Van de Vaart, Bale, Lennon and Adebeyor. A team my Gran could have told to 'run about a bit' and get a good position in the league. It is criminal that team never won anything and that the squad was so mis-managed that we lost out on CL football in 2 out of 3 years. Its funny how both England and all big clubs have given him a wide-berth throughout his career, before us and since - i wonder why? I see he is back where he belongs in a relegation dog-fight in a no-lose situation, just how he likes it. For Redknapp, Spurs really was, as good as it got.
StillRickyVilla
A hard won away win. Why did avb change his defence, really ? Our third game in a week, good use of rotation which keeps players fresh, rests gallas and vertonghen and gives Dawson and the excellent caulker game time and happy at spurs. Good decision, good rotation. Bale needs a rest against reading anyway, so keep making small changes to keep it fresh avb and keep winning. As someone else said, not just up to Christmas.
Windlespur
On,y negatives were the misses by ade and Defoe. It happens, but not clinical and thankfully didn't cost us.
Windlespur
Critical spur - agree with your comments about giving naughton some game time at right back. He is looking better each weak at left back, but clearly favours his right and walker, a real talent, is clearly struggling and needs some competition and maybe a break.
Windlespur
The only player out of the entire team Redknapp had, that was down to Redknapp, was Parker. And a 30+ year old Player of the Year signed from a just relegated team was hardly insightful. Even then Redknapp flogged him to death (despite having Sandro on the bench), so much so that we've hardly seen him this year! Oh i tell a lie, Redknapp brought in 41 year old Friedal - after completely destroying the confidence and career of Gomes, a crowd favourite and world-beater in the 2009/10 season. The entire rest of the team was a culmination of Arnesen/Jol, Comolli/Ramos and a couple of shrewdies from Levy where Redknapp just happened to be in the right place at the right time. Sorry to dispel the Redknapp media myth and all that. Anyway, you are right in one thing - its time to move on. We do afterall, have a proper manager now.
StillRickyVilla
S r v - you were doing soooo well until you mentioned Gomes and crowd favourite. Not where I sit. - a nice guy, great shot stopper, but inconsistent and a total liability sadly.

The real difference between the era that has ended and our new AVB era will become evident in the new year. Let us not forget the two consecutive seasons in which we were in the top four as the calendar changed into the new year, and then went on spectacular losing jags from February through May. How likely is it that the team this season will collapse and bleed points from February through May in the way that the past two seasons under Harry Redknapp went. Not too likely, I think. Come On You Spurs and Come On You Spurs Supporters. In this season of good will to all, give thanks and praises for a job being done well this season. Moan less (unless you need it for therapeutic reasons, in which case go ahead) and enjoy more. And D.L., add some joy in January with a signing or two that goes beyond last January's lack of effort that brought us two near pensioners. This year, emulate Father Christmas and open a full bag of presents and not mere lumps of coal. You never spent that Modric money, mate, and we surely could us another striker and a creative midfielder. Even the dead know that.

Windle, Gomes certainly divides opinion but during that season he had his own terrace song (you must know the one - I love you Gomes....) and the saves he made against Arse in the run-in were the best i've EVER seen live. My point was he went from a CL qualifying goalkeeper making saves in the San Siro to nothing overnight. Poor management.
StillRickyVilla
I've missed being on VS for some weeks as I went through the storm of the century in New York City and then encountered further infrastructure problems on my return to Brasil. But one thing that is jumping out at me is how many fewer comments there seem to be these days that there were last season (and the seasons before last). Where did all those commenters go? And some people who were on this site constantly seem nowhere to be seen? Did they need the topsy turvy existence of hot and cold that Harry provided? Is the slower and more certain improvement under AVB not providing the thrills of the roller coaster that we became used to with Harry? Are some people unable to enjoy steady improvement in place of great ups and downs? The AVB era does seem to be one of steady improvement, does it not? Has that not been sufficient to keep people's attention? coops left. where is peterballb? He loved us to play the 4-4-2, and AVB has been providing lots of that. Why did he leave? We used to see more than 1000 posts on match days. Now barely more than 200. What the... ? I know why I was away. But what about the others who are missing? Do we need a manic-depressive wild swing to keep comments coming in? Maybe the site really is a place not for football comments but for psychotherapy and there's not enough room for rants these days. Is vital spurs a wee bit less vital these days?
Total knobhead
StillRickyVilla, I hear all you say, and agree with most of it, but the fact is as yet we don't know where we will finish with us, Arsenal, and Everton together with the usual dark horse, looking like WBA at the moment. The point being that unless we finish 4th or better and with all excuses aside we will have gone backwards, so yes everything is looking promising but day of reckoning is still 4 months or so away.
Frank
StillRickyVilla, Ramos was taking us down mate sorry. Harry put us back on the map. He failed in his rotation of the squad, but he had us playing some great stuff. Your criticism of him is only from a negative perspective. When the team does well now, we praise AVB. In the same way, when the team did well under Harry, he deserved the praise.
Fanman
Critical_Spur if Naughton is trusted to play LB not his natural position and is doing well which I do think he has improved in last couple of games then surely he will give Walker a run for his money. AVB obviously doesn't trust Walker to play out of position at LB so that says volumes for Naughton.

Interesting comments about AVB rotation and the days under HR. What is refreshing is that when players are coming on they rae now making a contribution something they never did under HR because they were hardly used and not made to feel part of it. I also think it is because players know AVB uses players he feels are right for each particular game rather than the same favourite eleven regardless of their fitness and form so players are now feeling they have a chance.

At the beginning of the season this was obvious when players were brought in from the sub bench they were just not good enough and didn't have an impact and I think was hang over mentally from HR days but AVB has started to change the psychology of these players and now we are reaping the benefits and players seem happier and I actually see some players have improved in the few short weeks under AVB like consistency of Sandro, Defoe, Lennon, Dawson, Naughton, Siggy, Dempsey.
thfan
Another thing I've notice around here. Back before the great storm of NYC in Sept and October, The Iceman, Siggy, was slated regularly. Now he seems to be getting positive reviews with many calls for him to play more. Nice to see that his settling in is leading to people accepting him. Hope to see similar improvement and acceptance for Dempsey. And if D.L. brings in some non-pensioners in January, maybe even he will get some positive comments here. Losen those purse strings, Daniel. Spend the Modric money. Spend now to gain more later. Parsimony doesn't always make one rich. Penny wise, pound foolish and all that.
Total knobhead
Frank, absolutely. Nothing has been achieved yet. Its just my personal feeling that AVB knows what he is doing and so even if we get sneaked out of 4th or don't quite win a cup, there is a method to everything and we are building for the long-term. That's my opinion. With Harry it was seat-of-the-pants stuff but you always knew it would end in tears (Harry leaving for England, leaving for jail, leaving for old-age, getting fired, or just destroying the club through a bloated, under-used, over-aged squad). He was just in the right place at the right team with the team he had. If Jol had stayed in charge and overseen the development of that squad from youngsters like BAE, Lennon etc to full-blown internationals I imagine we would have done even better. Plucking out Harry's era out of context saying it was him alone who 'saved us from relegation and took us to the CL' is simplistic media crap (which he had great delight in feeding to fans on an almost daily basis).
StillRickyVilla
There is however clear evidence that we are utilising the squad better, working much more on tactics, strategy and set-pieces, improving individual performances, taking European football seriously (we were out of the UEFA Cup by now), taking the winning of trophies seriously, have a much younger manager capable of starting a dynasty, have a manager who empathises with the fans and wants to build the club over the longer term, have a manager with great motivation (our previous one couldn't bring himself to rule himself out of the England job) and have a manager who has proven to be capable of winning domestic and Euro trophies - years and years before someone like Mourinho was even in management. These are all clearly definable areas where there is reason to be positive. I feel any regression, particularly early season, was a result of Levy fannying around, selling VDV and Modric and not bringing in adequate replacements like Willian and Moutinho as AVB had requested.
StillRickyVilla
Also notice how Walker is taking some corners. Bit of responsibility breeds confidence but also good tactic to free bale up to be in and around the area a player more likely to score than Walker and who also puts fear into the opposition.

Lennon is definitely working on his shooting to score and getting in and around the area. This is not natural for him and he often bottles it but yesterday day shows he is improving slowly and win more goals he will get more confidence and his overall game will improve. I actually see Lennon more of a threat when he runs through the middle of the park just as Bale does on the other side. When he bursts through the centre he is unstoppable at times and he can make a shorter telling pass than he can from running down the wing and having to make a longer cross. These are small things that all add up and improve players as individuals and as a team.
thfan
what a loada crap from Bale.... so if my 5yr old nephew tries to defend a 13 stone athlete and manages to get his little finger on him, it aint diving if the big lug falls over..... the contact has to be deemed SUFFICIENT to induce the fall.... one would have to have the intelligence of a retarded chimp surely not to understand that simple fact.
Viyyash-Ramosh
Viyyash that is total bollox, excuse my French. If you are travelling as fast as Bale was, and a defender catches you in the back of the knee with his knee, with his arm across your chest, how do you not go down, also why should he dive, he has past Gardner he is in, it was a stone wall penalty. The problem is that Atkinson, along with the majority of his colleagues, is totally incompetent, probably knows the rules, but unfortunately not having been a player doesn't know or understand the game, they just don't apply a modicum of intelligence to situations. The guy Taylor who sent of two in the recent Fulham v Everton game, and both have been rescinded is an example, he should have been suspended but wasn't, it's crazy. Incidently both Dwight Yorke, not a renowned Spurs fan, and Clive Allen in the Sky studio , both called it a penalty. I am just amazed that as a Spurs fan, you didn't.
Frank
Regarding the Bale diving issue i'll just say this, rugby players of all sizes tend to withstand much stronger challenges without flopping to the ground in the same way footballers do.. they also get up a lot quicker as well.
Guyver
I saw the challenge several times in slow-motion as well as real-time.... the knee contact was next to nothing and the guy's palm barely brushed against Bale's chest and he was actually decellerating in his challenge. Bale grossly exaggerated the strength of the challenge to get a freekick.... more than half the time, everyone: fans, pundits, Media are decrying referees who dont seem to allow hardly any contact before blowing for a freekick. yet as soon as 1 of your own dives, its all oooohh there was contact... its about the STRENGTH of the contact, unless you want it to be a non-contact sport... is that what you want, cos most football fans do not ?
Viyyash-Ramosh
and as for sooo many refs being incompetent, maybe it would help if players from every team didnt try to cheat in order to get freekicks, corners, throw-ins and penalties virtually at every opportunity... until the players (and managers encouraging it) reduce the cheating from such a high level and frequency, the refs are entitled to make the odd error in judgement, when like it or not the vast majority of decisions are right
Viyyash-Ramosh
Guyver, I hear what you say, but your talking about a different type of contact with often different results. How many rugby players get cruciate and medial ligament injuries, ankle ligament damage, hamstring tears, or broken legs etc.etc. These are the type of injuries that the speed merchants suffer, if they don't ride, or avoid, badly timed or dirty tackles, often resulting in them going down. I repeat what is required is intelligent refereeing, to properly determine what happened, how, and why, rather than come onto the pitch with certain players already pencilled in the book awaiting confirmation. Generally they are, as I said before, incompetent, and they get far too many key decisions wrong, and are not held to proper account for their mistakes, that often affect the result of games. Yes rugby has more contact but the contact is of a totally different kind affecting different areas of the body, would you see PL players playing with their socks at their ankles with no shin pads, I don't think so, and dare I say much of the rugby contact takes place at slower speed.
Frank
Total Knob head, totally agree with the lack of comments. Been away myself, normally loads of comments!! The squad is smaller and has a better balance, with the exception of 4 keepers!! That's since Harry left, the talk of better man management is difficult to prove. The one thing for sure is that Levy didn't like him and the wages, squad wise is less.
RAF Yid
I would disagree that the current crop of PL refs get the "overwhelming majority of decisions right", this is patently not true. It is also true to say that referees have certain players "cards marked" before games, and that most of them are guilty of "homer" decisions, and many favour certain teams. This image of the infallable, unbiased, neutral official is I'm afraid miles from reality, and the truth.
Frank
for someone who has played twice as long at the top level and someone who is at least as fast as Bale over 50yds, its noteworthy that Lennon has NEVER had the reputation as a diver even tho' he is far smaller to Bale and thus more prone to come off 2nd best in physical challenges.... so much for the ole chestnut about Bale's high speed causing the slightest jolt to send him sprawling to the turf...
Viyyash-Ramosh
a ref and linesmen is gonna make upwards of 100 decisions per game ranging from feekicks, corners, throw-ins, penalties etc... so yeah the majority of decisions are indeed correct EVEN TGHO' most of the corner, freekicks even throw-ins are contested by players from both sides claiming the advantage even when they KNOW the corner, freekick, throw-in should go to the other team... in the light of this, I don't think any team has a leg to stand on when they mouth off about 'bad' decisions that disadvantage them short-term when the next game the same 'bad' decision goes their way and theyre more than happy to keep quiet about it then... hypocrites.
Viyyash-Ramosh
Frank, the problem is not with the refs, it's with the authorities. Too much power with managers and players. Look at the Fergie/Pardew incident, both as guilty, that's why Fergie got away with it. Even with 60 cameras and 5 minute discussions the experts don't agree. Respect, really?

Frank I agree the contact in rugby is in general quite different to the contact you see in football, but the challenge that saw Bale tumble to the ground was something you see in Rugby games all the time, with the recieving player staying on their feet quite easily, hence I thought of the comparison. I think so many players go down with the slightest bit of contact we've become accustomed to it, but the further down the football league you go, or the further back into football history you go, the less you see of the rolling around, staying down, the flop maneuver after a slight brush of arms and diving in general. And the tackle's these players tend to face are even more poorly timed than the tackles you see in the premiership. As Viyyash-Ramosh point's out, there are even a few players in the premiership today, like Lennon, who you will rarely see rolling around or going to ground easily. Being a referee has become a lot more difficult than it use to be.

Want to understand Bale's attitude when he goes to the ground? Look to Charlie Adam who seemed to do his best to break Bale's leg or ankle. Surely you can remember. Bale has had a couple of nasty injuries that surely influenced the way he tries to protect himself now.
Total knobhead
Before we get to the reasons why Bale goes to ground so easily, we'd have to admit he goes to ground easily in the 1st place.

StillRickyVilla, My point proven about you total disdain for the most successful Premiership coach in the history of THFC, that spans 20 seasons, when you write "I see he is back where he belongs in a relegation dog-fight in a no-lose situation, just how he likes it." I actually thought about writing about the pleasure you must be getting now that Redknapp is in a relegation dog-fight over in West London, in my last post, but I didn't want to make accusations. But you have gone and clarified that one for me! Yes the pleasure must be immense for you! Far greater than Harry making us a top 4 club for the first time in Tottenham's Premiership history, far greater than the the clubs one and only ever CL experience courtesy of Redknapp, that took us to the quarter finals after beating both the giants of Milan on the journey! And far greater than the beautiful football our team played last season (you must have hated every moment of it) that got our club into an official end of season qualifying position for the 2nd time in Harry's 3 full seasons at our club! Of course you try to make out that Harry failed to make the CL last season. But what you fail to acknowledge out of you pure blind disdain for the man, is that THFC were the first club ever to be excluded from the CL after qualifying in an official end of season CL qualifying position, in any league anyway in Europe... StillRickyVilla, You write "For Redknapp, Spurs really was, as good as it got." but the complete opposite is statistically true. The real truth is that "for Spurs, Redknapp, has been as good as it has got, in the clubs entire Premiership history... And the last time THFC (before Redknapp) qualified for Europe's Premier competition the CL or the old European cup was back in the early sixties. Statistical fact! Hopefully Redknapp has built a platform for AVB to go onto achieve greater things, and that AVB will be given the funding from the board, that Levy denied Redknapp, after making THFC a top 4 and Champions League club, for the first time in the clubs Premiership history! The best of luck AVB!
pelebro
Pelebro, you are just another mug who fell hook, line and sinker in love with Redknapp's media persona, his interview strap-lines and his Sun columns. I bet you have "2 points from 8 games" tatooed on your forehead! I stand by my posts on the subject, i suggest you read them carefully without your Redknapp-glinted glasses on. You also conveniently ignore the fact Jol/Arnesen and then Commolli built that team finishing just one place below Redknapp managed with the same squad but when the players were young and inexperienced and the team in its infancy and before the emergence of Bale, Modric, VDV etc! So one extra place with a far superior team! Hardly an achievement worthy of such adulation! And miraculously AVB without Modric, VDV, Parker, King, Kaboul, BAE and a fit Ade has so far reached the same 4th place level as Redknapp whilst still competing properly in Europe!! Yes and how is Redknapp doing now? One win, 3 draws, 3 losses since he took over his 'no lose' situation - and a demoralised QPR in a complete mess yesterday from what i saw - how come if Redknapp is such a good coach???? I guess he can add another relegation to his CV to the others and one bankrupted club. No, we made entirely the right decision moving on from him. Some fans should do the same.
StillRickyVilla
like it or not Arry Redknapp did take the club to 2 Top4 finishes and also playing some very attractive football; Fergie himself said that we played the best quality football in the Prem.... but AVB is a goodcoach and he seems to be able to use the carrot more than the stick (mouthing off to Media slagging players etc) which is great to have. and I like the way AVB has managed the squad with good rotation and giving the likes of Naughton, Caulker and even Townsend gametime
Viyyash-Ramosh
Oh and my views on Redknapp are in no way based on him as a person. I have no idea what he is like, although i must admit i hated the way he repeatedly disrespected our club and our fans in media interviews. Did he ever refer to Spurs as 'us'? I don't think so, in fact he seemed to be more complimentary about West Ham than his own club whilst he was in charge of us. That was apart from his blatant flirting with the media over the England job which was unbelievably disrespectful and probably cost us CL this season. Amazes me how some fans are so fond of him when it was clearly never reciprocated! Anyway, that's by the by. My views on Redknapp are based on following his career closely over 30+ years. He is a hack who has done nothing of note in the game apart from striking lucky for 2 years with us - the best set of players we had since the '60s. And even then he didn't win anything, managing only 2 4th positions in the league. Cut all this crap about the first Euro Cup qualification since '61, we've had many many top 4 finishes since then - i think at least 4 or 5 in the '80's and a 3rd in the early '90's as well as Jol's 2 5th places with a far inferior team. He did the absolute minimum that was expected with the set of players he was lucky enough to inherit at Spurs. Even then he left behind half a squad of dis-spirited, over paid 'deadwood' and a spiralling squad average age, which is going to take AVB a couple more windows to sort out before we can start making squad improvements.

StillRickyVilla -- RE : Harry Redknapp -- That is pure poetry ,summed the guy up to a T .
Even in the 2 points from 8 games he spent nearly £50 million in the january transfer window ,Keane,Bassong,Defoe,Kaboul etc all came in his first window 2 months into the job .
,br>Watch him sign stupid amounts at QPR at stockpile there too .Harry does safety in numbers but it`s alright when it`s not your money & a club like Pompey nearly disappear .
He signs his way out of trouble then leaves £50 grand a week players not even on the bench .

Harry is a great short term fix but long term it`s financial suicide keeping him there ,West Ham got rid because he was signing players just to line his own pockets .
Watch QPR in January ,they`ll have 40 pretty big earners on their books by the end of the transfer window ,they`ve got $hit loads already .

Harry fan, always will be. Most of the agruments could be swung both ways, inherited squads etc. however please don't say he bankrupted clubs. Levy is sensible, he didn't let him. Why employ all these MD and directors if they let him spend money they don't have.
RAF Yid
Big C, i think most people who are prepared to dig, even just slightly under the surface, can see Redknapp for what he is. His media love-in prayed on the casual observer.

Srv - I was in the Sansiro when the clown was sent off. Bad sample mate.
