At the start of the summer I was quite pleased when Harry was relieved of his duties as Spurs manager.
I appreciate everything he did for us, but his lack of respect for the club in courting the England post and rapid deterioration in form in the second half of the season was unacceptable as discussed on numerous occasions on this site. Then in came AVB, and I won't lie I was initially horrified following his disastrous spell in charge of that club with no soul.
The first few games of the season did little to alleviate those fears as some disjointed displays lead to some supporter unrest in home games. As the season has progressed however the organisation and shape of the side has become particularly pleasing. In away games we have played with purpose and a clear plan to be effective on the counter attack. At home we have struggled a bit with teams parking the bus, but the Reading game was an example of how AVB changed his approach at home and we saw a quicker tempo with pressing high up the pitch, thus producing a deserved win.
The away form in particular has been a major improvement under AVB having more wins with half a season gone than Harry managed in the whole of last season. There appears to be a mental resilience away from home, and long may it continue. There are plenty of games to go, and as Spurs fans we are certain that there will be some low points (it goes without saying). However it is clear that the players are buying into the footballing philosophy of AVB and I am confident that the longer the season continues, and with BAE, Parker and hopefully Kaboul returning the more improvement we will see.
Managers do not have a magic wand and they make mistakes. I think AVB has made many mistakes this season, but crucially he has learnt from them. He has accepted that playing 4-4-2 is sometimes what is best for the team. He has realized (maybe he knew all along) that Lloris should be No.1 and integrated him perfectly into the side in my opinion. Yet at the time when Lloris wasn't playing and certain tactical decisions weren't going our way me and many other Spurs fans were branding him 'clueless' and berating him post game. He has also rotated players effectively (particularly at the back) and played certain players to counter opposition threats, something which we would never have seen under Redknapp.
In hindsight it has made me personally assess how impatient I can be as a Spurs fan. Not only did AVB lose 2 of his best players in VDV and Modric in the summer, he also had major injuries to key players and several new signings to integrate into a side with an entirely changed tactical system. So this article is an apology, firstly to AVB and secondly to other Spurs fans who have remained behind the manager from the off. That is what I should have done, backed the manager and backed my other Spurs fans. I'm not saying AVB will instantly bring us success, no manager could do that at Spurs. AVB will make mistakes but we must allow him to develop as a coach and build his own team over the next few seasons.
It is remarkable at this moment in time that we sit third in the table, whilst those around us dwarf us in terms of financial muscle. Hopefully all fans will now accept that our job is to support the team and create an atmosphere at WHL. There is a difference between being constructively critical and being a negative energy sapping, sorry excuse for a Spurs fan, and in the first few months of the season I definitely fell into the latter category... I APOLOGIZE.... Here's to positivity in 2013, beating the scum and getting behind the team. Happy new year fellow Yids! Enjoy silly season in the transfer window but don't expect us to actually sign anyone!
