Spurs supporter says ''sorry''!!!

At the start of the summer I was quite pleased when Harry was relieved of his duties as Spurs manager.

I appreciate everything he did for us, but his lack of respect for the club in courting the England post and rapid deterioration in form in the second half of the season was unacceptable as discussed on numerous occasions on this site. Then in came AVB, and I won't lie I was initially horrified following his disastrous spell in charge of that club with no soul.

The first few games of the season did little to alleviate those fears as some disjointed displays lead to some supporter unrest in home games. As the season has progressed however the organisation and shape of the side has become particularly pleasing. In away games we have played with purpose and a clear plan to be effective on the counter attack. At home we have struggled a bit with teams parking the bus, but the Reading game was an example of how AVB changed his approach at home and we saw a quicker tempo with pressing high up the pitch, thus producing a deserved win.

The away form in particular has been a major improvement under AVB having more wins with half a season gone than Harry managed in the whole of last season. There appears to be a mental resilience away from home, and long may it continue. There are plenty of games to go, and as Spurs fans we are certain that there will be some low points (it goes without saying). However it is clear that the players are buying into the footballing philosophy of AVB and I am confident that the longer the season continues, and with BAE, Parker and hopefully Kaboul returning the more improvement we will see.

Managers do not have a magic wand and they make mistakes. I think AVB has made many mistakes this season, but crucially he has learnt from them. He has accepted that playing 4-4-2 is sometimes what is best for the team. He has realized (maybe he knew all along) that Lloris should be No.1 and integrated him perfectly into the side in my opinion. Yet at the time when Lloris wasn't playing and certain tactical decisions weren't going our way me and many other Spurs fans were branding him 'clueless' and berating him post game. He has also rotated players effectively (particularly at the back) and played certain players to counter opposition threats, something which we would never have seen under Redknapp.

In hindsight it has made me personally assess how impatient I can be as a Spurs fan. Not only did AVB lose 2 of his best players in VDV and Modric in the summer, he also had major injuries to key players and several new signings to integrate into a side with an entirely changed tactical system. So this article is an apology, firstly to AVB and secondly to other Spurs fans who have remained behind the manager from the off. That is what I should have done, backed the manager and backed my other Spurs fans. I'm not saying AVB will instantly bring us success, no manager could do that at Spurs. AVB will make mistakes but we must allow him to develop as a coach and build his own team over the next few seasons.

It is remarkable at this moment in time that we sit third in the table, whilst those around us dwarf us in terms of financial muscle. Hopefully all fans will now accept that our job is to support the team and create an atmosphere at WHL. There is a difference between being constructively critical and being a negative energy sapping, sorry excuse for a Spurs fan, and in the first few months of the season I definitely fell into the latter category... I APOLOGIZE.... Here's to positivity in 2013, beating the scum and getting behind the team. Happy new year fellow Yids! Enjoy silly season in the transfer window but don't expect us to actually sign anyone!

Well said my man and a man hug for you. COYMFS!!! Lets go marching on this is our time COYS

I think all this adulation of AVB is somewhat premature. Up until now he has done a good job, especially while missing Parker, BAE, and Kaboul, and after a less than auspicious start, dropping home points against clubs that we should see off. But let's just wait until the end of the season and see where we finish, before we go overboard. If there is one thing that Spurs fans should be well used to, that is shooting ourselves in the foot, and there is still plenty of time.
Frank
I have to say I never understood either the huge anti Harry or Anti AVB ideas from fans. sure Harry almost put himself in an impossible position, whilst anyone could see that AVB had been hung out to dry at Stamford Bridge, even if he wasnt ultimately the best or right man for Spurs
oxfordspur
but Frank, how much fan reaction is either black or white. you are either brilliant or useless. fans think with their hearts not their heads

Spurs are a wounded animal from last year...AVB is a wounded animal from last year...Both got a point to prove...you cheating small time club from West London are going to be put back in your place...The Original Glamour Club of London is awakening from its coma...Despite 10years of buying trophies you still only one trophy ahead of us...AVB will put us back on map...COYMFS!!!

Glad AVB is getting deserved recognition and winning 'some' over finally. I don't believe anyone needs to say sorry, but well done Jord. Clearly AVB was a risky appointment, but yes, I was horrified by the negativity from some (where is Raging these days) and equally at The Lane. We have seen similar re: Dempsey & Siggurdson (& similar with Pienaar). Time to plan, settle, get used to new systems etc is always important. Yes, we want success & aim to win things / top 4, but expectations need to be balanced with the need for time. After losing Modric/King/VDV & then no Ade at start of season (or since :)) and injuries to Kaboul/Parker/Bae - AVB has done an astonishing job. He was also under soooo much pressure, but his passion and commitment is much loved by me. Onwards & upwards - looking forward to taking my son to the Lane Saturday. I know AVB will rotate & sensibly rest, but also know he will be trying to win. COYS

Slightly off topic, it has been announced that Kaboul is going to be out until mid February. An interesting stat would be to see how many games he has played, against how many he has missed due to injury, since his return from Portsmouth, he seems to be regularly injured. I fear we could have a Ledley King syndrome developing, something we can ill afford.
Frank
Top man Jordtheyid, manning up like that. Shame others can't find it in themselves to do the same at times. Its great watching the knockers shoving humble pie down their throats, especially the ginger retard on TS! "QPR will finish above Spurs" when Quincey took over at QPR, being his most recent. Muppet!!

See Kaboom is likely to be out until end Feb at the earliest now according to our manic German "freund". Shame.

Spuds-U-Like
The point of the article is to back him... I'm not saying he's the messiah and as I point out he isn't perfect, but no manager is i suppose. He must be given a chance, which I didn't give him at the start of the season, we have the rest of this season to wait and see.
jordtheyid
Agreed Frank Kaboul i feel will always be a serious injury liability which is why i feel selling Daws as baffling as it seems he is content on being 4/5th choice which is ideal for when Kab is out injured. Hopefully Kaboom be back in time for the latter stages of Europa and Fa Cup when we will need our squad COYS!!

Freund has also just said on SSN that Adebayor is still to make up his mind re the ACN. We cannot afford to wait half the bloody transfer window while he prats about, and then leaves us with 1 striker (Defoe), if he goes. I say let's ignore his buggering about, go out and get a replacement and make him fight for his bloody place, the bloke is fast becoming the pain in the arse he was at Arsenal and Man City. One thing for sure he ain't bigger than this club.
Frank
Tottenham will complete the signing of former Manchester United starlet Ezekiel Fryers.

Please got to the ACN Adebayor so we can sign a striker who is better than you .Grzegorz Rasiak would be an improvement . Jenas is back !! yeeha yeeha
big cockeral
We can't afford to sell Dawson given Kaboul's fragility, and Gallas's likelihood of running out of steam and form, of both, as crunch time approaches. I can see us with Dawson, Caulker and Vertonghen as our available CBs towards the end of the season, please don't anybody mention Huddlestone as a possible stand in.
Frank
jordtheyid, correct, he is not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy!

friends coming to WHL always criticised the noise level is too gentle and polite comparing that in e.g. certain bridge or certain airline stadium. when i'm there i always found myself too strange to chant anything. apologies... COYS

Frank, no one would dare mention Hudd. Not when we may have JJ back
In-spurs-ational
Big C, "there is many true word spoken in jest", we could always rely on Levy to pull a rabbit out of a hat like as you say Gregor Rasiak, but the likes of Andy Booth, Frazer Campbell, and Louis Saha also come to mind. Jenas was always likely to return to sit on his arse until his contract expires. I hope we drum him out of the ground on that day, waste of space together with the other dickhead Bentley.
Frank
TRUE FRANK - here`s another

Tottenham are closing in on a deal with Anas Sharbini, according to the Croatia international's agent, with the side looking to build on their midfield to keep depth in the squad as the season hits the business end.
"It is true, Sharbini is close to moving to England,"
"His club Al Ittihad and Tottenham are in talks about transfer and I can only say that Spurs really wants Anas. It is now up to clubs to agree transfer."

I like what I have seen from AVB. I like that he has a plan. I like that he prepares for every game in a different fashion. I like that he tries to manage during games. I like that he supports his players. I love that he is not attention seeking in the press each and every hour. I like that there are no excuses. I love that his plan is long term and that he believes in himself, his players and the organization. I love the rotation and his easing back of players in to the lineup after recovery. I love that he wants to win anything and everything. I like the squad that has been built and is being built and I love that he is looking at the season as a marathon (I think he deserves huge plaudits for keeping senior players fresh which allowed Chelsea to win the FA Cup and the CL). I like the coaching staff and I like that I am seeing positive improvements in each and every young player (perhaps Walker excepted, but then I just think he's hopelessly without a football brain). I also love the fact that this squad, without the spine of King/Modric/VDV and with huge injury/suspension/contract issues (Ade/Dempsey/BAE/Kaboul/Parker/Bale appears to be in for a top 4 position. It is a huge credit to AVB that on January 3, 2013 that this quad is still in Europe, will hopefully be in to the next round of the FA Cup and are in 3rd place with 3rd entirely in our control. Not bad considering many on here had us with a chance of 6th if all went well before a single ball had been kicked in anger.

AVB was not in my top 5 choices but he is a top manager who has won titles. I don't care what League you manage in, to win the domesic league and cup going undefeated in the league and winning Europa in the same League shows an ability to manage a squad. The loss of players of the stature and quality of King, Modric and VDV would cause most clubs to fall back. We are stepping up and with BAE, Parker and Kaboul to come back, it's like we have added three new players. Get Ade and Dempsey scoring and assisting as they are able and we could be some kind of awesome down the stretch. Chelsea have a brutally congested fixture list. Liverpool, Arsenal, ManU all have it no better than us. In fact, travel-wise, our situaion is probably the best in the next round of Europe so I like how it looks. Advance in the FA Cup and get three points at QPR. Next two steps. COYS
peterballb
Frank, as I understand it Adebayor has stated he will play for Togo but will not go unless there are significant changes in the security precautions for the players. It's not that he doesn't want to go, it's that he doesn't want to see "public" players be made an example of again. I would not have signed Adebayor the second he was not going to be available on opeing day. I hate the level of greed that was shown (my opinion). In his stance with his Federation and Country, I can understand his rationale. It would have been much more helpful if he had come out and stated the concerns he had straight from the start instead of allowing the press to run with the story about his international retirement, which was, it seems, never the case. And yes, I agree, he should make a decision immediately, one way or the other, so that the people who pay his salary can know what they have to get done. COYS

Hello folks.... Happy 2013. It is refreshing to see some honest intelligent comments being made by our manager when he is quizzed after the matches,, makes a change from the twitching, slobbering, name shortening embarrassment that we used to get!
spurster
Happy on the first of January and probably one signing away from being truely content! Although Spurs really wanting an Anus really wasn't the transfer headline I was hoping for Big C.
Slurms McKenzie
Cum the end of Jan we could have Jermaine Penus and Anus getting warm on our bench nice....
JattYid
I would say that only in the last 2-3 games does it appear that (possibly) AVB may be finally getting performances out of Spurs. Up until that point, we were still struggling to put in 2 halves of decent performances. It still isn't on the level of last season's best, but then again Harry had 4 seasons to get that going to that level. A word of caution: Still more work to do. I do think that we have been somewhat lucky in some of these wins. Man U slaughtered us and lost. Liverpool should not have lost to us. Villa at home, we should have been 1 or 2 down before we took the lead - plus that was an incredibly lucky goal to take the lead with...and Villa ended up with 10 men through injury. Norwich & QPR outplayed us at home - plus QPR scored own goal to make us equalise. West Brom required a deflected goal to take the lead. We have lost to 4 out of the 5 opponents in the top 6 (besides us). Which will make finishing top four/five harder. Below Man U, 8th placed Liverpool is the highest placed team we have beaten. Whilst AVB was far from the top of my list - but OF COURSE you need to see where he gets to in at least 2 seasons. I have less concerns now as it looked quite vs Reading & Sunderland for the first time all season. I wasn't a fan of Harry until he got us playing. If AVB gets us playing consistently, then I will become a fan too. As for 4-4-2, this is TEMPORARY. Positives? Team selection in cups is interesting and has more of an objective - whilst not really getting the results/performances. Lennon playing with more swagger than I have seen. Defoe showing a bit better striker play than before. It was good to put the UTD hoodoo to rest, and that 1st half was unbelievable...despite the horrible 2nd half. With Harry gone, Levy now is happy to spend money... Freund is great. Vertonghen, Dembele signings have been excellent. Caulker and Naughton reintegration has been great. We just need an extra striker to be signed, and we will be fine.
TonyRich
TonyRich a very fair assessment of our season and I would have to agree that it is only in very recent weeks that Spurs have started to look like a team! But this is a very encouraging sign that and the fact we are third while really only playing in third gear for most of the season. As a first six months where really and truely the ship had to be settled after the collapse of last term and the disappointment of missing out on champions league whilst also loosing at least 6 of your starting eleven to transfers and injuries and retirement, then we can only regard it as a success. The real work starts now though!
Slurms McKenzie
The last thing this club needs is another croatian player, who i have never heard of before so i hope that rumour doing the rounds is a false dawn. Fryers, how many left backs does a club need, Verts played well in that position, ok prefers CB, BAE is not far from returning and any thought of selling to the blue scum should be kicked up the high road, Naughton has done ok, not every game but his adapting being right footed, Rose is away on his tour of duty, may be in the frame come the summer, Why Fryers? One game loan Jenas is back OMG, and all of us hoping for a happy new year, that's out of the window, please Levy sell him 3yrs to late, but if anyone can sell snow to the eskimos you can. Jord we all have views, that was your take at the time, no problem. I was glad the saggy faced twa7 got what was coming, he tried it on and Levy saw through it. The best part in last nights game was Luis crashing into Oscar, and Eva being called onto pitch, apart from that oh and benitez team selection, AVB is doing ok, the players are performing, we just need to keep our foot on the gas, because it can all change very quickly, so who if at all is Levy going to buy to help us maintain our push, LEANDRO, would be a start, SNEIJDER would be a big plus and HOLTBY for next season, un-less he moves over now. That's my 3.
spu 4 life
Fryers seems a strange one has anyone else seen him play?
jordtheyid
Long way to go yet. That said, if we play with the intensity and purpose we have seen over the season so far and the improvement in team play and chemistry continues, I believe we will avoid Jan/Feb/March flops of the past two seasons. COYS
peterballb
There is no doubt in my mind that AVB will be fantastic for us over many years if given the time and support. No one with that passion or intelligence can fail and remember he's 5 years ahead of Mourinho at his age! Now the fans are finally on-side the only risk i can see now is AVB being poached if he's really successful with us. Its imperative that Levy/ENIC match his ambitions because he's not the kind of guy who wants to be p1ssing about finishing 4th, 5th or 6th every year and not winning titles/trophies. We do however need to get away from the dramatic mood swings on here! Whilst very happy to read the positivity at recent results, if we lose in the Cup, v QPR and then against Man U no doubt we'll be reading about how AVB must go!!
StillRickyVilla
Fryers is a super signing. Glad we got it done. He can play LB but also CB. Naughton is not a LB he's a RB. Fryers was penciled in as the LB of the future with ManU until he felt Fergie was not allowing him to advance quick enough. He's 20 and made 6 ManU appearances last season in the cups. He did not look out of place. He is a very good talent. Writing will be on the wall for Rose either now or at season's end which is great asset management. 6 months ago, no value, now we'll probably get 5 or 6 M plus standard add ons. COYS
peterballb
I feel AVB has done well this season, it is good to see his ideas and tactics have been taken on by the players. I am not a "glass is half empty" person but my concern is that the six games Spurs have lost this season have nearly all been against our biggest rivals. From the present top seven, us plus the other six, our record is as follows, Man. United away win, Man. City away lost, Chelsea home lost, Everton away lost, Asenal away lost, WBA home draw. That is of the eighteen points available we have got only four. I realise three points are available if you play either Man. United top of the league or QPR bottom of the league, but we have not preformed really against the teams that matter, I feel.
Ox Yid
Another point, if BAE does not extend his contract with us (there hasbeen a lot of Chelsea talk) we would be short at LB with only Rose in the system. Naughton does well, but is a right back. COYS
peterballb
SRV, I don't think AVBwill be "poachable" until he proves himself with us. If he has us in the CL and are winning cups and in it for the title, whee can he go and get better? Manu? RM? AC Milan? There are only a few clubs in the world where thee may be enough sway. Get CL year in and year out. Build the new stadium and he basically will be well paid to stay. It thus won't be a question of money or title opportunities. If he bores, as Mourinho seems to, he will go anyway. Whatever way things go, Levy will look after the teams interests. COYS

StillRickyVilla You know the score it`s a results business .
His job is to get results .
Results & fickle go hand in hand .
Average season start he rightfully got criticised
Excellent middle season he rightfully got praised
Season finish ? to be confirmed but that will determine how fans will react .You cannot have your reaction pre prepared ,love whatever ,hate whatever .

Difference between AVB & Harry is one manger looks up the club & fans ,the other constantly looked down .
Like with Jols i really want him to do well & he`s a very likeable character ,wears his heart on his sleeve & shows genuine passion for the game & club .
Nice when you have a manager who is more an insider looking out ,more than an outsider looking in .
How much support AVB gets is up to him .Players & managers are there to please us ,not the other way around
big cockeral
Big C, I know its a results business, but my personal vision of a top manager is to build things up on an upward trend over 5, 10 years+. Like you say, someone who is really passionate about the club and wants to do well for the fans over many years and win things for the club. This is the impression i get of AVB and like you say, before him Jol. In my mind a manager only has so much influence on results on a match by match basis , after-all he's not actually kicking the ball! Even though i'm sure AVB would run-on and throw himself in the way of a thunder-bolt shot if he was allowed! As long as i can see that AVB has 100% commitment and determination to succeed and i can see what he is trying to do, i am happy to support regardless of short-term results.
StillRickyVilla
peterballb Ade stated his concerns about the safety aspect a while ago. I even put up an article with a quote from him about it all in another topic. It also stated that the shooting is still affecting him and it isn't just his own safety that he ios worried about it is the rest of the squad as well. He is the main spokesman for the squad over this and as such I can fully understand his reluctance to be able to give an answer until that scenario has been cleared up. After all it is a life or death situation that they will be in. It is not something to be taken lightly.
chrishove123
Peterballb, you are right. We are a long way from AVB being poached. I get the impression he wants to build something special with us as well over the long-term. However he may eventually out-grow ENIC. ENIC need to finally build the stadium and show they also have the ambition to win titles as I don't see AVB waiting around for ever.
StillRickyVilla
Well up Jord Yid, as you, AVB was not my 1st choice. I had Moyes and Benitez ahead but in an early season post I stated that AVB was now OUR boss and we had to get behind him for the good of the club.Half season gone , I am more than happy with the way things are going but come May we'll see what our man is made of.I am quietly confident of a top 4 finish and this, with any good cup run , will equal a triumphant 1st term for AVB .
cypyid
BigC, what you say is correct but that does not mean that the organization has to listen to the fans. IMO, that was the mistake Levy made with Ramos. Ramos never got the time. 8 games with a new keeper (no PL experience), no striker to replace Berbatov or Keane, new backs, new MF, I mean what could anyone have expected but for there to be a growing in period? Heck after the sixth game I heard a rumour that the club was already talking to Harry. Ramos was also trying to get the team to play 4-5-1 possession football. There were huge growing pains. Yes, Harry stepped in, played the same guys game in and game out, changed back to the more comfortable 4-4-2 and the results followed. He then got to spend 40M in the next two windows on strikers (2 of whom were gone before Harry was) and again got results (not surprisingly as all had previously been with the club). The thing is, Corluka, Modric, Bale, Lennon, King, Dawson, Gomes, Hudd, Pav, BAE, Woodgate et al were not his guys and were instrumental in not getting relegated (I never believed it to be a real risk) and then qualifying for CL a year later. They just needed time. Ramos, IMO, just needed time. The players were there to succeed. Harry benefitted from a pretty good squad, which he made better and then allowed all but the starters and a couple of subs to rot on the bench while we could no longer compete in Jan/Feb/Mar the past two seasons. Read that AVB has used more players than any other manager. It should serve us well as the inevitable February crunch comes. It's why benitez (unwisely IMO) rested Mata and Hazard yesterday. I'd have saved that for the Cup first leg. Our schedule is fairly full. Chelsea's is brutal. COYS
peterballb
chrishove, he has stated it but it was as an aside. I had read it too. What I am saying is that when the press ran with the Ade has retired from International Football, he should have shot it down definitively. Most people don't know that he has not said no to Togo. There is the incorrect perception that he is waffling on this and going back on what he said. I do however believe that the club needs to know whether he is going now. If Levy already knows, then it matters not. If AVB is uncertain and not just trying to help Ade mount pressure on Togo, then, there is an issue. The club needs to know. COYS
peterballb
We've just signed promising young left-back, Zeki Fryers. Hopefully, he will be a great addition to the first team. I'm not sure what's going on with Ekottu, maybe he's on his way to Chelsea? If they bid enough, Levy will bite their hands off. Naughton is currently doing very well at left-back, but ultimately, we need a quality lefty on that side to whip the crosses in.
Fanman
If Ekottu does come back into the first team, and plays at his best, then I think he'll make us a better team. Both offensive and defensively.
Fanman
Fanman, the loss of BAE has cost us this season. Vertonghen is so in control when he is in the middle. We are fortunate that Naughton was played on the left for most of his loan last season. He has done really well, but I'd rather see him on the right so that Walker can sit and see what a decent cross looks like and how to position himself properly. It astounds me that someone with his talent gets beat so often and cannot deliver a decent cross to save his life. If BAE goes (and I agree, big fee and Levy takes it), our LB would be a fight between Rose, Fryers and Naughton and if BAE stays, Rose will be sold, Fryers will be backup and Naughton will be backup/option to Walker. I hope BAE stays and believe Naughton will show himself to be the better RB. I really like his instincts for going forward, like his composure and think he is positionally sound. Reminds me a lot of BAE how he uses his body to shield the ball and the path an attacker wants to take. COYS
peterballb
In all fairness when we lost to Newcastle, Chelsea, arsenal and city we had a depleted team, we have not played a top 6 team with our strongest team yet apart from utd in which we won, when Chelsea come to us we had no bale, no dembele ffs and until the last 15 we was pretty much in the game!!! In response to 'OX YID'
tottingham10
Ayone know much about this Fryers kid that we've signed? I'm guessing he must be a prospect if he's come from United??
TornadoYid
Hopefully bales replacement, he is a lightning quick left back, who can also play CB, but England youth pushed him into midfield and apparently he excelled, so maybe he will be the next Gareth....who knows.

peterballb I do think that the lives of those people are far more important than ANY football club including Spurs and as such I for one don't think he should be forced into a decision before he is ready to make it.

Nice article. I could always understand the stick that Harry took in the end as we'd had an inside track on the man for 4 years. Every team selection, formation, substitution, tactic, interview and transfer. We studied the lot and drew our own conclusions. What surprised me was that fans abused AVB from the start even though they knew barely nothing about him. 25 games at Chelsea and we judged him as if we knew him inside out like we did Harry. Not exactly fair and it's great to see him getting a level playing field at last. Who knows after 4 years whether we'll all be bashing him as much as Harry. I hope not as that would mean we've finally found our man for one of the toughest jobs in football.
muttley
muttley Speak for yourself because I for one didn't abuse or try and trash AVB at any time. I was fully behind him from the second he was appointed. I have fought his corner time after time in the first few months and even more recently and I still say he is the manager to take us on to the glory days again.
chrishove123
chrishove, I have no issue with that, but a decision must be made at some point. The club is not standing in his way. If the lives are at risk, he should not go. That's just common sense. They have already had their players killed so really this should not be an issue. As regards Adebayor, this will all have negative effects on him. His not being at Spurs to start the season cost us and cost him on the ability/fitness side of things. The red card cost him and cost us. I don't think it is too much to ask that he communicate his decision to the side now. If his safety is a concern, the decision makes itself, does it not? If he is looking to get better facilities etc for his teammates, then perhaps he can tell Levy he's going while holding out in the press etc. Leaving us with no backup for Defoe if he's injured would be a very Harry-esque situation and we should not be left guessing. COYS

Thank-you tottingham10, whilst I agree with your comments on my post. I agree we were under strength on many of the games, but my point is it is no good being a "flat track bully" as the say in cricket and beat the Readings and Villas twice in the league, when we must do better against the top clubs. As they say the games against sides are "six point" games, we get three and they get none. Spurs should not have lost all six games we lost this season, all these games we were going to get at least a draw. The only game we were out of was the Arsenal game, which I believe we would have won if Ade had not been sent off. I am pleased with AVB and the team, but we must get a win at home against both Manchester teams, Arsenal and Everton, plus at least a draw at Chelsea, to stay in the top 3 or 4.
Ox Yid
chrishove123 - I was talking generically. I didn't ever slate AVB either and was in there fighting the detractors alongside you. I did have Moyes as my first choice though but never had a problem with AVB. It was certainly a relief when the speculation was finally over and he could get on with the job. Moyes is also showing his class this season.

Well done Jord... i have always said AVB is good. as "the special one" said he is good and will do well for us, so the best club manager in the world rates AVB who was his assistant at Chavs...,and AVB won 3 titles in Portugal in one season. This recommendation should have been good enough for every spurs fan. Still some more fans to win over... COYS and AVB..
Block D Spurs
muttley Sorry mate but I hate to be tarred with the same brush as those that you mentioned. I wasn't sure how he would be but I based my feelings on the fact that the special one really really rated him and by what he had done with Porto. As far as I was concerned chelski simply used him to try and get rid of some of the old guard because the owner didn't have the balls to do it himself, when that failed AVB was hung out to dry as the scapegoat so i totally dismissed his "failure" at chelski as something top put down to experience. Yeah Moyes is showing his class but I would far rather we have AVB to anyone else in Britain as our manager, yeah even more than having SAF. I think we have a real winner here and he will go on to be far greater than the special one. AVB is the EXTRA special one, or will be given the time and the backing from club and supporters alike.

Just a thought as to how many posters on here have more than one account just so that they can agree with themselves and look good and or popular as well as having someone actually agree with them when they spout their rubbish or hate on a player and the manager. LOL

That's an interesting experiment. Censorship only extends to the N word (can't use it at it will be converted to too may asterisks and yet 'Paki' and of course the ubiquitous 'Yid' is acceptable. Can anyone from the powers-that-be explain please?

Anyway, football. Welcome Mr. Fryers. Possibly the end for BAE or Rose. Still eagerly anticipating what January brings. And on topic, I wont say sorry because although AVB wasn't my first choice I supported him throughout and will continue to do so. Still think he should drop Walker though :P
TopSpur13
Really funny one.....

SneijdertoQPR is trending in twitter and the reason for that is a Internet troll who has a account @BBCSporF which is a parody account o @BBCSporT. The logo everything looks similar. @BBCSporF made up stories on Sneijder to QPR and how Harry convinced Sneijder to work with Shaun Derry & co and Tony Fernandes is financing the deal. Someone in channel4 came across this and without realising this was a troll account, this made it to Channel4 news.

It's mid term and AVB gets a B from me....he's made mistakes, the team is only just starting to put in performances, we've lost against all the top teams (bar Manu) but we're in contention and most importantly the players want to play for him. I said we'd know by now if he was worth persisting with and IMO he is. So now we must back him with MONEY to buy...I know he's never really bought players before but we knew that when he was appointed so now is the time for Levy to back him...AVB is out of the cross hairs, there's a bald chap with glasses in there now...

TopSpur13 I hope it is the end for benny as I personally do not rate him as good enough for us to push onwards and upwards. He loses concentration far too often and does not have the footballing brain that is needed causing him to make schoolboy errors. He plays for the money NOT the club or for the passion and he has admitted as such. He therefore will not put himself on the line for this club and the sooner we can get rid of him the better.

Yea fanman you can call anyone a bundle of sticks, the filter seems to be working fine, you can't type Newcastles' strikers name either.
Slurms McKenzie
Dont agree with all the Walker bashing, sure he hasn't been near his last season's form, but name me a wide player who has got the better of him this season. Verts has been a bit ragged at times at left back but because he looks so much more cultured on the ball we seem to ignore his mistakes. Our left side has been much more vulnerable this year.As for BAE, scares the wits out of me sometimes and is poor in the air, and lumps it more than Dawson does on a bad day
matt hoten
Anyway. I'm hoping that Benny doesn't leave. He's a good left-back. I think that if Chelsea were genuinely interested, they would've made their move already?
Fanman
BAE has been one of our most improved players but injuries seem to be taking their toll on him now. He also seems to have at least one mistake per game in his locker - I still shudder when I think of him giving away the ball against City last season, which led to the penalty!
Slurms McKenzie
Matt hoten, Walker is an easy target because he has had to adjust his game under AVB he's had an epic eighteen months previous to this season and so has set the bar fairly high for himself. By his standards he's having a poor season, by th eleagues standard I'd ay he's still up there and can only mprove. Maybe a little bit of a rest might do him some good aswell, when either Smith or BAE return.
Slurms McKenzie
OyVeh Maria, against Reading, it was after Parker came on that we seemed to lose our shape, and Vertonghen got brushed aside by Pog. We we're lucky that Daws cleared on the line. We 're lucky yes, but opposition teams will always create chances in 90+ minutes. Take Chelsea vs QPR for example. It was very similar to many of our home games against the weaker teams. Chelsea dominated the game in everyway except goals, then QPR hit them with a sucker punch. If you watch the Everton vs Newcastle game. Newcastle had a few chances to win the game, but didn't take them. The only team I remember not even having one chance against us, was blackburn at WHL last season.
Fanman
matt hoten, are you kidding me? Player after player have walked betwee Walker and Gallas like they were saloon doors. Walker's crosses look like some of Pav's shots when he was trying to hit row ZZ. Walker commits fouls in bad places and has still not seemed to get what a foil Lennon could be for him. Were it not for Lennon's defending (which is superb for such a small player), Walker would be sitting on the bench. Naughton, IO, is a far superior back. He has correct positioning, goes forward when appropriate and seems to offer some interesting moves when attacking players. Once BAE gets back, I hope AVB sits Walker and plays Naughton in his natural position. The difference will be immense and I'll bet Lennon will be the beneficiary of a little bit more freedom and co-operation in attack. COYS
peterballb
agreed....but lose our shape at WHL against the scum....citeh....manure ......even for 5 minutes, and we wont be 3rd for very long!

Walker at RB reminds me of Bale at LB. COYS

Slurms McKenzie, the family member that even Kelvin refuses to speak about, in case he's tarnished with the bigot brush. However, I wish you no more than Spike Milligan's view of Chris Evans.
lordjohnny
Slurms dont disagree with that,in fact Naughton could have played once or twice at RB and given Walker a break, but most of our goals conceded have come from our left side (Everton is a recent memory ).Baines & co down our right had hardly a sniff at goal. Lennon defends better than Bale which helps but Walker is the best defender I have seen for closing players down.
matt hoten
Sorry Lordjohnny just investigating your theory in regards to the fickle nature of vital spurs filter I didn't mean to cause you any upset or hurt just as I know you didn't want to cause any upset or hurt with your attempts to establish the limits of the filter. I am so with you on the fight for free speech!
Slurms McKenzie
peterballb, Naughton definately seems a more intelligent player than Walker. I don't think that we'll ever see AVB play Walker at left-back. He'd be all over the place.
Fanman
OyVeh Maria, agreed. Against the top teams if we lose our shape we'll condeed goals. I don't know why AVB always subs Dembele, maybe to rest him as much as possible?
Fanman
Certainly Matt our earlier season poor results were all as a result of poor positional play and defending on our left flank probably dueto Noughtons lack of exprience in that area and Bales lack of tracking back. Both of these issues seemed to have been resolved in recent weeks. As regards the right flank the ony goals we seem to conceed there is from set pieces off poor fouls from Walker unfortunately.
Slurms McKenzie
matt hoten, Walker has the pace to get us out of dangerous situations.

...Walker also gives away the ball and unecessary fouls...
Fanman
OyVh, absolutely, those teams wil kill you. What I would also suggest is that those teams have also made tons of defensive mistakes and managed to get away with them from lesser teams. ManU have been pretty poor defensively, but they are scoring goals. Arsenal score some days, not others, but concede really good chances every game. City can destroy you, but they too make mistakes. Arsenal looked terrible against us until Ade got sent off. We had tons of chances against Newcastle. We were leading Chelsea and the difference inthat game was Cech made two brilliant saves and Friedel didn't. Other than 5 or 6 attacks between Gallas and Walker, United didn't create all that much. We did not look great against City, but were still in the game. Beating the teams competing for the top 4 is the best way to create or reduce a gap. Not dropping points against the bottom half of the table is the best way to keep pressure on those you are competing with. 3 points at QPR and Chelsea, Arsenal, Everton and Liverpool will all have to win to keep pace. Beat the bottom 10, home and away, you have 60 points. If we had just beat the bottom three the past two years, home and away, we'd have had CL both years. COYS

spu 4 life
Chrishove123 getting rid of the player is a bit extreme, kind of like cutting off a leg because you have a wart on your toe. Better we fix the problem with Walker or better yet give him some time on the bench to think about what he's done wrong and how he can fix it. This lad has at least twelve more years at the very top left in him. Thats one hell of a learning curve.
Slurms McKenzie
Fanman, recently he's been all over the place at RB. LB would be a train wreck. I think dropping him for a few games would do him the world of good. Tell the media he's tired to save him and AVB from the onslaught of dropping the young player of the year and just attempt to help him find his form. Still a raw talent but he has a long way to go. Nothing wrong with a silent "p".. ;)
TopSpur13
No worries Slurms. Point taken. Retract my comments. However, I'd contend you'd need to include something more radical than 'spud' 'paddy' 'mick' and 'bog' to get the moderators reaching for the asterisk buttons.
lordjohnny
Peter, I watch a different game to you, so why is Walker in the England squad ahead of Naughton and why does AVB let Walker take left wing corners if his delivery is so bad.You make some sensible points then blow them out of proportion like you do with Defoe. I did enjoy your Harry bashing but even that was a bit over the top
matt hoten
Peterballb i agree with your logic to an extent but would suggest that Newcastle tried the you score three will score four approach under Keegan and it didn't turn out so well in the end. But leaving that extreme aside I agree that we need to address our chance conversion rate urgently. Our defensive side of the game has been improved and the summer is the best time to really address this side of the squad.
Slurms McKenzie
AVB has done really well all things considered, awful end of season form (9/21 premiership wins), 2 out of 5 best players sold, 4 first team players injured and we are sitting third.

It was obviously going to take time to change the way we play but we are now starting to really see it pay off on the pitch. We are so much more solid this season especially away from home, this does mean we a little less expansive and free scoring as under Harry.

I agree with some in that we need to beat some of the top 4 to stay up there, I also think we need to add Stoke away to that list.
T.H.F.Chris
Possibly Lordjohnny but the applying of asterisks to a word should not be your only guideline on wheither a word or term is offensive or not. Even though none of my comment was filtered there is a country of just under four million and about 400 million in the wider diaspora that would find all of it insensitive, racially abusive, stereotypical and just plain inappropriate.
Slurms McKenzie
Very true Slurms and cleverly put. But as for the written word, why is Paki or Yid acceptable in these columns, but N****r not so?
lordjohnny
Matt, the reason, I presume, Walker takes the corners and free kicks is because he has the talent to do better. His goal last season after watching VDV screw them up game in and game out was a cracker. He stated, he never practices. So, the talent is there. Our best corner, free kick takers, IMO, are Hudd, Sigurdsson and BAE. These guys are not generally on the pitch. So it's Bale and Walker. If you watch Walker and see his cross and dead ball delivery and see quality anywhere near approaching the talent, then we are indeed watching with different coloured spectacles.

I also do not think I was over the top with Harry or treat Defoe badly. Harry is a hack as a manager. I saw more coaching from the last three games from AVB than I saw in the entire time Harry was here. In all three games, subtle changes changed the flow of the game. Fabulous coaching. Defoe is a .6 goals per 90 minutes on the pitch striker (actually .54 this season and 9 of 14 goals have come from 4 of 28 appearances). It's what he is. A decades worth of stats and more importantly, watching him play, tell me I am not wrong. He failed to create any cohesive partnership with the likes of Ade, VDV, Berba, Mido, Keane, Crouch, Bent, Pav etc. Harry got that one right last season. Impact sub and he will score at a better rate. Having Dempsey and Adebayor on the pitch together in the middle will increase their stats. We need our strikers to score. Defoe had lots of chances against Stoke. Couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. Painful to watch the first time, but I watched it a second time. he really should be doing better. COYS

Keeping ON topic, in football (especially PL) hind sight is a wonderful thing and foresight is pure guesswork with hope and pray!. I am not ashamed to NOW have even greater respect/admiration for AVB than I did during the early stages of the season. However, now that the dust has settled, a clearer view paints a totally different picture!

IMO, AVB found the Chelsea job a real culture shock (PL, ego’s, expectations and the hurly burly life in the fast lane) compared to his past employment in Portugal. In deed having been evicted from the Chelsea hot seat, the pressure was going to be inevitable. At spurs he re-attempted HIS style/formation of football in the early stages and I am sure realised very quickly that chances of that style succeeding in the PL were almost NONE!. We have seen the ongoing tinkering with formations and seems he has now found a happy medium that still allows him to readily tweak things against different oppositions.

The fact that he now sits relaxed on his recaro, compared to crouching on the touch line, suggests a more relaxed, contented and an in control person. He has learnt and now he’s applying. Players seem fully adapted and ongoing tweaks will continue.

He has come through half term with good marks. The 2nd half will get nasty and tougher where the men are sorted from the boys and it is how he crosses the finishing line that will decide his end-of-year grade for pundits and Media. But for fans, who hopefully appreciate that it is a LONG TERM project, a comparable 2nd half with extended cup runs should be ample evidence that we have solid foundations to build on. The foundations that have changed so many times in recent years require better bedding in. For me the signs are encouraging. Levy needs to provide the enforcement to the foundations and the fans to chip in with energy. COYS!
Critical_Spur
Would it be stretching the limits if good taste to suggest that if one was to elect to adopt a moniker for oneself and not infer any racial slurs but instead wear it as a sort of badge of honour is it still unacceptable for that individual to use the term for themselves?
Slurms McKenzie
Lord johny glad to see your still a plank, what was great to see was the 1-0 win against Swansea where we showed a winning mentality with the goal coming from a set piece. Something that had been missing for a few years
spurticus87
TopSpur13, agreed. He was dropped against Fulham and we kept a clean sheet (with a great save by Lloris) Naughton played well in that game, he's just seems more solid and thinking than Walker. Basically Walker needs to be dropped for a few games. Hopefully he's 'rested' against Coventry and QPR, but that would mean Verts at left-back...
Fanman
Thanks Peterballb and Critical_Spur two enjoyable, articluate and accurate posts at this late hour. I generally would have to agree with both of you.
Slurms McKenzie
I'm not for censorship Slurms, but I'm intrigued by the way this site works, and how arbitrarily (look it up spurticus when you're checking how to abbreviate 'you are' so you don't look a plank in print) they allow certain epithets and not others.
lordjohnny
Peter I have a problem with Ade in that although he holds the ball up well, he hangs on to it for too long, and therefore the opposition are always 10 men behind the ball before its moved on. Seems to me you might want that if you are winning the game, otherwise its not the way AVB wants to play. Now I am also not that mad on Defoe but he has improved somewhat this season. His main problem is that he cannot play with his head up and has been “coached” most of his career by Redknapp. Recently in the Everton game he closed down Baines every time he got the ball and virtually made him ineffective. Obviously told by AVB to do it but that is what Defoe has needed all his career and never got it.
matt hoten
Then may I suggest a direct e-mail to Oxordspur might be the most efficent and sensible avenue to take if you just want to elicit information in relation to the filtering software that Vital use and prehaps you could be put in touch with the company that coded that particular software and discuss the apparent anomaly that you find so peculiar?
Slurms McKenzie
I just find Defoe sooo frustrating to watch. As much as I love it every time he does score, his attempts to goals ratio is very poor IMO. He hasn't score in the last how many games?....that's considering he has probably had over 20 shots. Very occasionally he scores a beauty, placing the ball skillfully beyond the goalie's reach and yet often he can't find the net from 5 yards! Sure, I agree he is a different and much improved overall player, Rooney-esque, collecting the ball in midfield and distribution. However, he is a Striker and I prefer to judge him on attempts v goals and NOT goals v time on pitch.
Critical_Spur
Critical Dont disagree with that but whenever Ade goes one on one with the keeper I always expect the keeper to block it, whereas Defoe usually get 50% of them which is still poor. Still be careful what you wish for, I remember someone on here saying we missed out on Chamakh.
matt hoten
And others raving about Gervinho and moaning because we missed out on him.
matt hoten
Ohvey that's like saying if we converted our chances against reading the score would have been 34-3 come cut them some slack, played loads of games recently and still dominated reading for 85 mins.
tottingham10
matt hoten, fair point about all those high profile failures, but tbh, I have (naturally) never been overly keen on prolific this and prolific that signing. Only handful of those players make it at their new clubs, e.g., RVP has carried on at Utd where he left off at Arsenal. For every RVP example of success there are probably six failures (Torres, Caroll for example). Unless your manager has a good eye for picking a player for what he may offer in your setup, the prolific signings can easily look lemons!. Would be interesing to see how Ba does at Chelsea. I welcome 'low key' players that can be groomed with time. Modric + Bale are good examples. Even as per ssn, Sharbini (croat) looks OK for developing, though similar to Dembele. I have also noticed that we are linked more with younger players since Arry's departure!. I am sure Joe Cole would'e been at WHL had Arry still been around.

Can we cut this crap about names. It's a football forum not a a social or political arena. If a name is intended to humiliate and it does, it is unacceptable so let's just leave it at that. As for the article, how obsequious can one get. It's not wrong to have doubts and need reassurance and evidence - it's blind faith and unquestioning obedience that leads to death camps.

The fact that we need a striker or maybe 2 if we're honest should be our biggest concern, AVB has worked miracles to get us into 3rd place with the resources available. IMO - Defoe isn't good enough to be our main man. Ade is looking a little lost this year, although I think he looks better when Defoe is not on the pitch. Dempsey is more of a link up player than an out and out goal scorer. Harry Kane - If he's the future for us, then we are in all sorts of trouble! Levy needs to buy a ready made guy and an up and coming strikers, he also needs to take the advice and trust from AVB.

We also need to bring in the new players asap, not wait until 31st to save a couple of quid. Defoe is not scoring at the minute, Ade don't know whether he's staying or going to ACN. A new striker will give them both a kick up the backside.

SRV - You're rapidly becoming my favourite poster on here. People expecting us to praise HR because his team beat the Chavs, who happened to leave out a FEW key players. Yet our own manager lost a few winnable games & he's a $hit manager, even though, based upon players we're missing from last seasons squad, we had MANY MORE KEY PLAYERS MISSING. King, Kaboul, BAE, Parker, VDV, Modric & even Ade can be included in that. Yeah AVD is trash, isn't he!!

Just my little joke, Slurms. I'll flag them in advance next time! :)

The only interest I took in QPR's result was how it effected us in the League, yes it was benefical and keeps Chelsea within reach if they win their other game in hand. As regards Harry he's gone now and I couldn't careless who or what he does but I also wish him no ill will what so ever. He was a decent manager for us right up until about christmas last year then he burnt his own bridges and there was no coming back. Am I glad he's gone? Based on the style of football we now seem to be playing, the results we're picking up away from home and the types of players we have signed you better believe I'm happy!
