Latest Tottenham Hotspur News

Tottenham Hotspur vs. Manchester United.

Tottenham Hotspur vs. Manchester United.

Some, myself included, insist that this isn't a strong all-round United team, but the facts and results appear to prove us wrong.

Just look at the facts, I'm sure I read that no Prem team has accumulated as many points at this stage of a season and we know that there have been some outstanding teams in the last twenty off years. Add to that a recent record of nine wins and a draw in their last ten Premiership games and despite many believing that United don't have the one - eleven strength of previous eras, they still definitely have enough quality in key areas to be better than their rivals. Perhaps that is as much about those rivals suffering their own troubles and inconsistencies, that United being that much better, but a table doesn't usually lie and even if they are not the best United side ever seen, they seem to be too strong when compared with the best of the rest in the domestic league and were also comfortable in their CL group, despite taking their foot off the game in the final games when qualification was assured. To me, in terms of squad strength, United are no better than City or Chelsea, but what they have and always have had is unity and togetherness for the the goal, Spurs appear to be strong here, however United have the long term belief, based on proven success, whilst we don't.

What seems obvious is that United have plenty of goals in them. Easily the Prems leading scorers and with the likes of RVP and his striking partners, this is a team that isn't just capable of hammering a weak and hapless opposition, but is one that is devastating in and around any opposing area. The problem appears however to be at their own conceding goals that take something away from their gloss of being the biggest scorers, with only WBA conceding more of the ten teams below them. 56 scored in 22 games in outstanding, however 29 conceded is poor for their position and perhaps makes then slightly vulnerable should their strikers forget their shooting boots, just for once.

Spurs of course have an almost unique opportunity to do a league double over United and that feat would be a Premiership first with the last being in 1989/90. Spurs haven't even beaten United at home since May 2001, but is this a Tottenham side that is stronger, more confident and tactically aware than many that walked out against United and even just having that knowledge of beating them at Old Trafford for the first time in 23 years, might be something to add real belief, but in saying that few have that iron belief and will for revenge like Fergie and United, so Spurs will probably have to again hit them hard and very quickly and hope that United leave themselves too much to do, as they did on the 29th of September.

Still without Kaboul and Gallas, Tottenham have the devastating blow of losing Sandro for the remainder of the season, though Scott Parker is more than an able deputy and I feel he will add experience and leadership and perhaps it will be an opportunity for Mousa Dembele to take on a greater role in driving forward, something I feel he hasn't done as often or effectively since returning from injury. The loss of Emmanuel Adebayor may well actually work in our favour as the probable inclusion of Clint Dempsey to support Jermain Defoe and drop back into the midfield, might add strength and brain over brawn quality in a game where we will have to be at our very best.

United have their own problems, in losing Jonny Evans, Ashley Young and Darren Fletcher from their squad, which probably mean we have the Ferdinand and Vidic combination in the heart of their defence, big on experience, but slower on pace. Something to think about? In the midfield, I have often felt they are lacking something, but in former Spur, Michael Carrick, they have a player in superb form, whilst I have also been very impressed with Anderson recently, and Scholes was superb in the game at OT. There is a potential that Cleverley and Carrick will be the starting pair and though both are very good players, I think we have the quality to deal with them, whilst Scholes seems to be running out of steam over a hard 90 minutes. The width will probably come from the under-rated Valencia and the brilliantly erratic Nani. I rate Valencia as an excellent player and his work-rate and defensive work is immense, much like Aaron Lennon does for us, however Nani is someone who doesn't seem to share that work ethic, but whichever Kyle starts, I feel they will have to be n their defensive guard

For me, I believe Spurs should revert to a 4-2-3-1/4-4-1-1 formation with Lloris, Walker, Dawson, Vertonghen, BAE, Parker, Dembele, Lennon, Bale, Dempsey and Defoe as our eleven. Caulker for his extra pace was in my thoughts, but Dawson's experience edges it for me, whilst Walker or Naughton is a very close call at the moment. What is very much needed is for a strong and organised performance, whoever pulls on the shirt and hopefully we have learned from our sitting back in the away game. Though defeated last weekend, Liverpool perhaps suffered for a lack of attacking ambition and in the final fifteen minutes could have easily got a point or even more. Saying attack is easier said than done of course as the likes of Van Persie only need half a chance to score, but I do believe if we play too deep we will be picked off and I would rather lose and feel we gave it our all that be frustrated at what might have been. This will be a total contract to last weeks parking of the bus and though United will look to create far more and dominate possession, it also represents an opportunity to play our own game and I have a feeling that there could be plenty of goals once again and as long as we score one more I would happily take any score in an enjoyable game in prospect...

Hopeful but not expecting a win, a draw would still be alright, getting four points off Man Utd in a season is four more points than we usually get, if it happens to be more then it's a welcome bonus.

Like everyone else, i want us to win and take all three points. The big question is can we stop them from scoring, i don't think we can. The next question is can they stop us from scoring, again i don't think they can. At this moment in time and after 90mins + fergie time i would take a draw, the spin comes from beating them away and a draw at home, reverse those results, taking 4pts from 6 vs man u is not the end of the world. All 6pts, worth it's weight in gold.

SilwalYid yeah i know what you`re saying .Defoe needs to wake his arse up because he`s been non existent for a while now .

Key man for Spurs is Gareth Bale .Most if not all our attacking play has been put on his shoulders .Levy needs to act & get better attacking players in .We`re becoming very easy to defend against

For me swap out Dawson and Walker for Caulker and Naughton. We will need pace in the centre of defence otherwise Van Persie, Rooney and co will have a field day. We will also have to be defensively sound out wide so Naughton for Walker for me. Set up that we and if we play positively it could be a good game.

I think this could be a good team on is day...

.........................Defoe...............................
.....Bale.............Lennon..............Walker.....
.............Dembele.......Parker.....................
BAE.......VERTS...........DAWS.......Naughton
.........................Lloris...............................

Evra, Nani or Valencia will be working hard down the Manure left-wing.. Pushing Walker into a defensive-winger position (as he can run all day, and is seriously quick) with Naughton at right back... I think Walker, Lennon and Bale as attacking line of 3 behind Defoe and a DM pairing of Scotty and Dembele..

pushing Lennon into that CAM role for the game could speed up the game in our favour... there is to much speed in those 3 AM legs (Bale, Walker, Lennon) for the Manure defence...

It forces Bale to stay out on the left and cut-in... Lennon gets to play the channels off Bale, Lennon, Walker and Defoe..

We saw BALE start his career at left back... and move into the left-sided attacker that he is today...

I think Walker is the same... hes is lightening quick, has an eye for a run, can go past players with speed, he can cross when he puts his mind to it... and we know he has a shot on him...

I have heard loads of fellow Yiddos speaking about having 2 players in every position, for us to say we have the strength in depth that we need. As long as we have good right-back cover in a player like Naughton, i think we have decent right-wing cover for Lennon by using Walker out there on occasion...

I remember reading somewhere that Dembele started his career, and played for a long time, in the center forward position.

Anyway, i think our starting team should be full of pace tomorow, as the Manure CB's are not quick at all...

Rooney back is a worry for me. So many times over the years ive seen him drop deep and absolutley boss things, stifling our play in the process. Get tight on Rooney early, get him under pressure is key. If he has a mare (He's either very hot or very cold) and Utd arent half the team they are when hes on form. In some ways Ade out and playing Dempsey helps us to do this.

Personally I think Utd are weaker than they have been for some time on the playing side. What they do have is something that I believe AVB is trying to instil in his team, a winning mentality and total belief that no matter what may happen on the pitch, the points will be going their way. Other than the machine that is RVP, they have a balance that allows youngsters to settle whilst the old heads can cover and educate the youngsters during games. What they also do is do their transfer business early, giving the youngsters and new blood a full pre season at the club where they learn both the style of play and equally importantly, the ethos that runs through the club from the tea lady to the manager. It's extremely rare to see Utd blooding players in games with points at stake. They also have and it should never be underestimated, the best league manager I've seen in my lifetime, SAF. Love him or hate him, you've gotta admit that he'd make mincemeat of the weasel Levy and produce a winning team at our club.
And after all that, I'm predicting our first ever PL double over Utd, we're due the rub of the green and they certainly won't come to park the bus. COYS

United defence is shaky, they have had a number of high scoring games which they won because they have the goal machine which is RVP. Look at the league table, they've conceded more goals than Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea. Their defence is weak, RVP compensates for that. Stop RVP and you stop united.

I will not be surprised if Manu get a penalty awarded...after Fergie saying they were opportunities. I will not be surprised to see Fergie time added if we're winning after his last comments....for the integrity of the game it's time for Fergie to retire, he keeps haranguing referees and unduly imparting pressure on officials for the good of the game it's time for him to go or the FA to come down hard on his comments.

Hopefully Dempsey don't play because he will not defend from the front. Do you really think lazy boy Dempsey is gonna keep carrick silent? Highly unlikely. We should push dembele further foward onto Carrick and throw the young Tom Carroll in the deep end to partner Parker. Dembele vs Carrick, Carroll Vs Cleverly! Ekotto also has to start.

My Birthday tomorrow and will be at the Lane for the best gift of all. Doing the double over them would only be the 4th time in my lifetime ('60, '63, '74, '90) and to be there to see it would be priceless. Shame Sandro won't be alongside Parker to bottle up midfield but expect your selection Ox to be spot on. Interesting to see if Rooney will be chanced after only 90 mins since being out a month. Parker will be the most important player tomorrow. Vertonghen an hopefully caulker even though I love daws will give us the best chance we have of stopping RVP but Parker must do a job on Rooney an Dempsey on Scholes or carrick. This will be our best chance of winning. Bale an Lennon have to roam to occupy man us centre halfs creating space for Defoe otherwise man us centre halfs will easily mark Defoe out the game an also nullify the threat of Lennon an bale if they only stay out wide

Utd's greatest asset is that they play as a team. It is then tempered with tenacity and graft. I hate how two of their forwards can put our entire defence under pressure as we try to play our way out of the back. We need to be calm and keep the ball and not hoof it up.

shedboy2 I expect parker to be everywhere putting in some hard graft. Sometimes thats going to push him further up the pitch. If parker is just holding his defensive position, its most likely we will be under the cosh and i don't want that. I'm not saying he should lose all his defensive discipline but i also want him harrassing players trying to dictate play in there half to start off attacks like the 2nd half at old trafford, because if we drop off and get too deep, man u will slaughter us.

I would go 3-5-2. Lloris, Caulker in the middle of Dawson and Vertonghen. Parker and Dembele. Sigurdsson in the middle of Lennon and BAE and Bale and Dempsey up top. I would get as many balls in to the box as possible from deep. Their defence is suspect. It'll likely be Vidic and Ferdinand in the middle, they are 31 and 34 respectively and seem to be always one stretch from an injury. We need to choke out the middle and make them go wide. Our big guys in the middle should be able to deal with the crosses that Lloris cannot. There is a game plan to win this game. It will come down to our youth and speed, or their experience and quality of strikers. Should be a very interesting match and am looking forward to it. Having Defoe to come off the bench could be huge. COYS

If BAE is ready to return, only AVB knows the answer, i would have him back in, Naughton has done well as cover, but BAE is a natural left footed defender. Lloris; Walker; Dawson; Vertonghen; BAE (Naughton) Lennon; Parker; Dembele; Bale; Dempsey; Defoe; -Dembele has had a few good games vs Man U, he ran the show for Fulham at old trafford before, he was on the ball when we beat them 3-2 great first half, he needs to be on top of his game today.

Brooksy I liking this verging-hen player, I'm thinking you've got an iPad. But I think that is the only team you can pick today other than maybe Dawson in or for caulker or even back4 of walker, caulker, daws and vertonghen like at old Trafford, midfield onwards picks itself.

Parker is key to us not losing, the game is built for him as we might not being doing a lot of defending but when we do it is vitally important we get it right, got to stop there counter attacks fast! Lennon and Defoe are key to us winning. If they can produce it'll open things up for Bale and we all know how good he is.

I have a good feeling about today, 3-1 Spurs!!!

ItalianYiddo, it's a TV game. It won't get cancelled. After all if the Leicester game went ahead on Friday, this game also will. For those of you who don't know, the snow and traffic was so bad for that game versus Boro, the Boro players and staff left their coach and ran / walked the final two miles to the ground on foot (as did some of the Leicester players). I don't suppose there's any chance of supporters being able to support their team today without moronic 12 year old keyboard warriors telling them that they're not real supporters?

Ox, as I said the other day mate, this site is becoming easier & easier to stay away from & you've got yourself some very sad little people registered on here now & they seem to have no reason for being here, other than to abuse fellow members & THFC supporters.

I used to be very firm in my belief that this WAS by far the best THFC forum on all the worldwide web. That belief has well and truly gone mate, and it's a crying shame!!

I hope the people that played such a massive part in making this site what it once was, are able to enjoy today's game. I hope that the people who have taken this site & wiped their arses with it, are locked away in a padded room for their own safety..

I'll go for a saddening 3-1 loss. I'm not saying that because I've got no faith in our team, our manager, or our owners. I'm saying that because I'm awful at predicting results & usually it's the polar opposite of what I predict, that happens. COYS... IAVBIT... ILIT... FOYG

Game won't get cancelled, snow is consistent but not thick enough, I'm 5 miles away. Traffic and transport will be awful, wear boots and leave now!!!

Can't be changing my mind I-s-a... That'll just jinx it & I wouldn't want to be personally responsible for us not getting anything out of today's game.

Aussie Yiddo, if it was down to the health and safely police, I don't think any Spurs game would go ahead. I don't know about you, but any Spurs game never seems to do the heart any favours!

coopsieyid, okay 3-1 it is then. I'll take anything, even a 1-0 with the goal coming in the 125th minute (got to give a team a chance to score otherwise it would be an insult to the game) off Defoe's back side

Everyone's expecting goals, everyone's expecting a great game, everyone's expecting drama, put me down for a 0-0 bore draw.
