West Ham United vs. Tottenham Hotspur

West Ham United vs. Tottenham Hotspur

This game could have been the hang over game on the back of a disappointing European exit but Dembele`s last minute goal at Lyon will see Spurs arrive at the Hammers Boleyn Road Stadium with a different mindset to what it could have been. At this stage of the season 3 points from games like these are the minimum requirement .

AVB will be facing Sam Allardyce's so called long-ball merchants. The long ball league is a statistic that is not mentioned that much but West Ham actually play as many long balls as Barcelona and Real Madrid? Liverpool, who are supposed to be taking the short passing game to another level under Brendan Rodgers, average 66 long balls every match. These are the average number of long balls played, on average, this season by the teams who finished in the top four: Champions Manchester City (54), Manchester United (56), Arsenal (49), Tottenham (61). As for the rest of the Premier League; Newcastle (78), Everton (69), Reading (67), Wigan (67), Chelsea (65) Fulham (64), West Bromwich (64), Aston Villa (62), Sunderland (62), Norwich (60), QPR (59), Stoke (59), Swansea (55) and Southampton (51).

Allardyce has a specific system in place designed to hunt down the opposition and take advantage of teams who want to play The Beautiful Game, but play it badly. The idea that Allardyce takes training at Chadwell Heath each day with full-backs launching endless long balls towards Andy Carroll or Carlton Cole is a myth though.

At the beginning of the week, Allardye`s Coaches take training and Allardyce has input from the sidelines. They play small-sided, passing and pressing games to take time away from the players and put them under pressure. As they build up towards matchday, Allardyce`s role becomes more prominent and he is heavily involved on the training pitches. On Thursday and Friday, like most teams across the country, they practice set-pieces ahead of a Saturday fixture. Even then, for a team tagged 'long ball`, they have won only 50 per cent of their aerial duels this season. Allardyce has always been prickly about the accusations that his teams know only one way to play, but he has adjusted to the demands of modern football. At times they might kick it long, but on Monday night they might just join the culture club.

The two teams meet at Upton Park and Hammers chiefs do not want to see a repeat of the scenes that shamed the club at White Hart Lane earlier this season. West Ham will take a zero tolerance to fans who taunt Spurs supporters with anti-semitic abuse on Monday. A message will be in the matchday programme warning fans to behave and the east London club will come down hard on anyone caught causing trouble. Spurs fans were targeted by anti-semitic thugs in Lyon on Wednesday night, and were also attacked by Lazio fans in Rome last November.

Off the pitch there are rumblings about big Sam going after his contract ends in the summer. West Ham co-owner David Gold insists there is no job for Paolo Di Canio at Upton Park and that they intend to open talks with current manager Sam Allardyce over a new deal. However, The Italian is a cult hero with Hammers fans from his playing days at the club and a section of supporters, unhappy with Allardyce`s style of football, want to see DiCanio as boss.

However, Wet Spam are currently in 11th place, 6 points above 18th placed Reading, only twice have the three promoted teams from the previous season survived relegation. Reading and QPR are already in the dog fight and West Hams recent form would suggest that they could also be dragged in.

It`s difficult to assess the Hammers side, James Collins could make his return from a hamstring injury against Spurs on Monday night? The Hammers went off to Dubai for some sun but Collins didn`t join them instead the defender stayed behind to continue working on his fitness. Errors have been made by Collins, he'd admit this, however with The Hammers in need of getting some points on the board to remove any niggling relegation fears having the Welsh internationals experience to call upon in defence will help.

Given the up and coming fixtures we face 3 points will be very welcome. It will be interesting to see, if Andy Carroll is in the side, who are two CB`s will be. Will Kaboul be used? Mousa Dembele looks like his form has deserted him and we need someone to boss the middle of the park. Will AVB play Ade up front with Holtby just behind or will Dempsey be in the hole? What would be your preferred selection?

Surely we play about 30 more long balls when Dawson is playing? :-)

There's nothing wrong with beautifully timed, inch-perfect long balls. If you've got the passers to execute them and the speedsters to exploit them, so you should. Just so long as it's not the only string to your bow.

Probably Dawson and Caulker to take care of Carroll. And I agree with the bit about Dembele. Apart from the goal against Lyon, he hasn't really imposed himself in recent games. Maybe Holtby to recreate a central pairing with Scotty akin to the Modric-Parker partnership? Siggy to attempt a VdV impersonation?

For me this is a huge, huge game. A 4 point gap before playing Arsenal next Sunday with the change to go 7 ahead of them cannot be overstated. Not only that but as Bale's decided to run his mouth and claim Spurs have overtaken Arsenal I'd rather not look like a bunch of fools as we could be behind them by the end of next week. I genuily believe the next 2 games will define our season.

Totally agree Darkenvai. As long as it is mixed up. Don't suppose any one remembers our second goal v Forest back in the late 70's I think. Aleksic hoofs it on to the head of Archibald straight on to the head of Armstrong on to the right boot of Hoddle past shilton and into to the top right. Ball didn't touch the ground until it hit the back of the net. I'd like to see a 4-1-2-3 Parker Sitting in front of the CBacks. Holtby and Dembele playing in front of Parker with Lennon And Bale either side of Ade. COYS 3 points a must.

Dark venal, perhaps the"only arrow in your quiver"?? Quite appropriate. I expect a tough game again. I also expect to win. I believe the team feels the same way because they are building confidence. Dembele has to play and yes I would play Holtby behind Ade. Lennon and Bale are obvious. I can't see Kaboul starting as he has just got back to training. He's a couple of weeks away. AVB may start Caulker for his air superpremacy to counter Caroll and more firepower on corners. If that happens it would mean Verts plays on the LCB. Walker rightBAE left Lloris in goal.

o.y.t, completely agree, I feel this is the more important game, if we fail to pick up 3 points Ar5ena1 will have a massive incentive to beat us as they would overtake us to claim 4th spot. Further to this, we may have the opportunity to leapfrog Chelsea if they don't win at Citeh today.

very important game to take our intentions to Arsenal next week. We lose they are only a point behind us and that will give them a huge incentive to do us over and go ahead of us and I feel that will break our season mentally as the mental strength of Arsenal has shown time and time again to be there when needed. Secondly a draw also gives Arsenal the incentive to over do us and go above us whereas a win for us changes it all as a Arsenal team facing us four points behind I feel gives us a strong mental attitude to do them over and get seven points above and sit more comfortable. Today we could do with a draw between City and Chelsea or a City win.

thfan how about a Chelsea win? The theory is that it would virtually guarantee United the title (let's face it they've won it already). City would hopefully then lose heart and have an end of season collapse also Chelsea are so up and down that we might even get second. To dare is to do

C`mon City ,one of Chelsea ,Arsenal & Spurs will get 5th

Aim for 3rd & snatch 4th ,some 6 pointers coming up ,it`s in our own hands ,lose these games then we don`t deserve it .Nothing is lost & nothing is won ,3rd would be epic but to acieve that some players need to wake up .
Walker ,Adebayor lennon & Dempsey have been dreadful ,key players who are not performing .
Missing Sandro too .Can`t keep relying on Bale ,Vertonghen ,Lloris & Dembele to carry the team ,from now on they all have to stand up & be counted for ,next 6 -7games are massive ones .

Big C agree with you but it's not waking up so much as gaining form. Having seen Arsenal v AV yesterday I would think that Lennon would run wild on the right as Arsenal were unable to stop AV. I trust AVB to have his strategy worked out to start the match. I look for Ade to com through against WH tomorrow. He's getting more and more into the game.

for me tomorrow is the biggest game of the season for us so far. then it will be next week, then the week after. whilst we are still in with a shot every upcoming game from now is our biggest of the season. AVB should let the players know this. if this was a home game, three points in the bag, however West Ham are a different team at home so we need to take the game by the scruff of the neck an let our quality shine through. next week, everything goo about Arsenal runs through Wilshere. stick either Parker or Dembele on him like glue an that will make it a whole lot easier. as for tomorrow, Caulker an Daws should be the CB pairing for me. i would consider playing Naughton however he is not very physically imposing esp against a team like these. Dembele an Parker must move the ball forward quicker an be smarter an sharper with their passing. COYS!!!

TK. do you reckon we gamble an try Siggy or Holtby there taking either out or leave it as it is as we seem to be getting the results. not sure i or AVB would risk it when it has tbf been getting us results. I disagree with you thfan though. I think Bale having the free role would cause havoc as I dont think they have a footballer smart enough or disciplined enough to be able to mark him out the game if he has a free role. Lyon were different, they had some very smart footballers. But of course I would still like him to tear down the left on occasion. Swap roles with Dempsey or hopefully Holtby

The next three league games will define our season. West Ham, Arsenal, Liverpool. Could easily end up with just 1 point out of those three. Of if we perform like we can and turn up could easily be 7-9 points. If we win our next 2 there will be 7 point gap to 5th. We play liverpool and Arsenal play everton. That game could go either way. Arsenal look totally devoid of confidence. Bit like last year when we played them and lost. Such big games coming up. If we win our next two i think top four will be ours as i don't think mentally Arsenal will be able to close 7 points in 10 games. Esp as they don't have anyone who can carry the team. RVP carried them last year and when you have someone like that you know as a team you always have a chance. Bit like us at the moment with Bale. lets get third. Then our summer transfer policy totally changes. COYS

What a ridiculous behavior a player from Swansea has just shown at Wembley. Has anyone seem it ?? Dyer wanted to take a pen so that he could bag a hat-trick. Since another player is the one who takes it whenever it happens, Dyer was nearly taking him the ball to take the pen...Players cannot think they are bigger than the club that pay them to play. They are playing a Cup Final.

so you think Dyer is in the wrong. Seriously 3-0 up against 10 men. Dyer has a chance to set a record of being the first person to score a hat-trick in a league cup final. Surely you give him the ball and say good luck. De Guzman should have given him the Pen regardless of being penalty taker or not. if it was 3-3 then its a different arguement but considering the game is done. When else is a player going to get a chance to score a hat-trick in a cup final. its not been done in 54 finals so shows not often.

With games coming thick and fast, AVB will need to use all the formations and combinations mentioned above. It's really now down to him matching up to what the opposition are capable off. I don't think we're going to murder anybody but if we can keep the good defensive discipline we've shown and take our chances we won't lose many. Now is not the time to break the two DM set up in favour of a more gung-ho attacking approach. Any 2 from 4 CBs and any one from Dempsey, Holtby and Siggy, and the rest of the starting line up picks itself until JD and YK return.

Lads, I do undestand and respect both points of view, however, regardless of the score, imho, if there is an official penalty taker and he steps up to tak it, he is the player assigned by the manager to do it. Dyer could ask him to take that one, but wen given a "No" as aswer, shold have accepted that and stepped away. If you rememer, Bale chose to go for the goal rather than passing to Defoe when we were 2-4 down at the Emirates and he stated, very recently, he was looking for a hat-trick against Newcastle and trying to shoot at every available chance even if there was a team mate in a better position to score. What if Newcastle manage to equalize as they nearly did ?? I know the situations (Bale/Dyer) are different, but, for me, he principle does not change. But, again, I do respect your opinions. Finally, when I said he didn[t celebrate I meant other players run for e Guzman and Dyer did not. After a while De Guzman and he exchenge a hug.

I agree with what your saying BC and Alex designated Pen taker etc etc However its more about the team spirit. Newcastle earlier in the season in a game they were home and dry in gave the pen to Cisse to try and build his confidence. He went on to miss but the team weren't selfish and even went against pardews orders to give it to him. I just thought it was in bad spirit by De Guzman to deny a player a hat-trick same as when Nugent stole an international goal off Defoe. Sometimes you have to put others before your own personal Glory. Bale shooting from all angles etc is totally different scenario. in the circumstances they were 3-0 against 10 De Guzman should have done the honourable thing. I know i'd have given the pen up to a team mate. Maybe thats just me though. COYS tomorrow. Massive massive game

IMO, this will be the biggest psychological game bar the Gooner’s game. A defeat here and we leave the door open as per last two seasons for others to spoil the party. A win and our tails will be well and truly up for the following game. I expect AVB and the boys to be fully prepared for this and produce the desired result.

Given both Arsenal's and Chelsea's results this weekend, this has now assumed the "must win game" status. We will then be 3rd 2 points in front of Chelsea, and still 4 points clear of Arsenal. Everton losing has probably dropped them out of the frame, leaving the 5 of us to fight out for a top 4 place. Of course it would be ideal to finish 3rd, more prize money, and straight into the group stages of the CL.

For all of you who love to go round quoting all those lovely juict stats, I agree wioth AVB on this, they are a load of old bollox as they mean sweet F A. ... The striker has scored just once in the Premier League since November and will be relieved to hear boss Andre Villas-Boas claim that the Prozone statistical approach to football is “useless”. "For me it's useless, but it depends from coach to coach and it's different, different approaches. The Spurs boss said: "I don't use it because I don't believe [in it]. Normally players are related to tasks and certain tasks might not achieve specific physical data that rewards premium efficiency in terms of a physical performance. "But if they do the tasks properly it's what you want as a football team. You always have to be very, very careful with statistics. "The mind and how the player feels is much more important for us, rather than statistical data."

Wet Spam like to get the ball wide to the full back's which creates a better angle for lumping it on the edge of the box, then attack the second ball. It will be interesting to see how the ref deals with Kevin Nolan from corners, as his main objective is always to block off the keeper, the referee being HOWARD WEBB. I think AVB will go with Lloris; Walker; Dawson; Caulker; BAE; Lennon; Parker; Dembele; Bale; he may side with Dempsey who has a habit of scoring against west ham and also for his height defending corners. Ade up top.

On the subject of the League Cup, not only have Swansea now equaled the entire ENIC trophy haul, along with Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers and Middlesbrough, they are also wearing that dream all white, totally classy Adidas kit that Daniel Levy has refused to give his customers for what will be a period 18 ENIC seasons when the current contract with crap Under Armour expires in 2018. Look and learn from little Swansea Danny boy...

chris - I love those quotes re: Pro-zone...I remember berating Jol for putting too much emphasis on pro-zone at one stage (to his credit he did relent) The stats are a tool and can be quite ueseful but they are just one tool in a managers box of tricks....

as for the game...they will sit deep and be in our faces in the middle and final third. They will be physical but they will try and get free kicks by going down easily themselves so Webb and Walker beware...Holtby will need to keep his discipline as they will try and niggle him in order to get him booked, they'll hit Bale and Lennon hard early on to try and knock the fight out of them...they have a game plan....let's hope we have a better one!

Hahaha! I'm pretty sure that, since our loss to Newcastle there has been at least one person on here to claim that our upcoming game was "must win". Actually, wasn't that a late kick off? I bet, since one or several of our rivals won earlier in our day, that it too was given that monicker!

This is THE game I hate to lose the most. Arsenal might be our real rivals, but where I live it's all west ham, I got 4 gooner mates and about 20 hammer mates, same kind of % where I work so this is the game I get most stick for, and the fact west ham are, and have always been, $hit makes it worse so come on boys.
