All About Attitude

When AVB took over he announced Michael Dawson was surplus to requirements and agreed a deal with QPR to sell him.

Dawson turned down the move, worked hard in training and over time forced his way back into the side. At no point did he complain about how he was being treated or throw the kind of tantrums we saw from Modric, he just got on with it. AVB has admitted he made a mistake trying to sell Dawson and there are now reports he is to be offered a new, improved contract.

This is encouraging for two reasons. Firstly the strength of character shown by the player, you couldn't ask for a better response. Secondly the fact that the manager is prepared to admit publicly that he got it wrong. In all walks of life you get people who, having made a mistake, either can't learn from it or are scared to admit they got it wrong for fear of looking weak.

At the other end of the scale we have Adebeyor. We all know what he's capable of from last season, we all know what he's producing in the current campaign. But the really worrying thing is his attitude, he reminds me of a spoilt kid. Nothing is his responsibility - 'its not my fault I couldn't get back from Africa, its all down to that nasty president of Togo...etc etc', you get the picture.

I've long argued that Man United's superiority is as much down to attitude as ability. To compete we need a squad of players with the kind of attitude Dawson has, we need to get rid of any with a similar mentality to Adebeyor. Hopefully AVB is thinking along the same lines and we will gradually see a mentally stronger Spurs team emerge.

1) It's good to see that Daws didn't want to go to QPR, but don't be surprised if we lose him in the summer anyway, only to a bigger and better club than QPR.

2) It's good to see that AVB can admit he got it totally wrong

3) What's wrong (exactly) with Ade's 'attitude?' (be specific?!) unlike many footballers today, he puts his country and his countrymen above playing for his club - shock! Horror! A player who loves his country!! - why are fans so blinded by this typr of genuine natonal committment? I heard the same things being said about Parkers 'attitude' when he insisted in playing for England at the Euro's rather than having his achilles operation or resting an injury he knew he had - hence why he missed so much of the early part of the season - has Parker got an 'attitude' problem as well?
Spursex
Spursex - Its what happened after Togo were eliminated. Playing for your country is fine. Lounging about in Africa for the next five days until the club is forced to hire a plane to bring you back isn't.
jod
Spursex - Unfortunately Ade is only judged on goals by most. If he scores every week all is great, if he doesn't score then he has an attitude problem. Last week against Lyon I could name at least 8 players that were worse than Ade on the night. Funny how nobody mentions these guys as people with 'attitude'
yiddyboy
Agree about Daws and AVB but please get off Ade's back. Everyone reacts differently to setbacks and Ade has had a difficult season especially regarding injuries. Perhaps he hasn't got Daws' mental strength but that does not mean he won't get back to the scintillating form of last year. Like it or not, he is an important player for us now and we really need him to get his confidence back. Hopefully a goal or two tonight will help. Let's all stop bitching and get behind every player in what might be our most critical season run-in ever. COYS
ParkLane67
jod,
Who said he 'lounged' about? He led his country, his country's football organisation was a mess; he took the decision to lead/look after his fellow players and pay for their accomodation out of his own pocket and then got them organised to get on planes - he then quite rightly said that as what they had achieved was momentus that he would see the President.

Please bear in mind this is a player that pays half his salary to support a kids charity at home - by my standards that sets his priorities and standards as well as his 'attitude' way above some others. Yes, he is guilty of putting country and fellow players above club. Shock horror, shame a few more don't in this day and age.
Spursex
yiddyboy,

I can only but agree!

don't think its particularly valid to compare dawson's attitude with modric's. both did what was necessary to get what they wanted, and since one wanted to stay and the other wanted to leave it would be pretty strange if they reacted in the same way. modric gave 100% for many years and said all the right things about the club right up to the point when he decided it was time to move on. pretty much exactly what bale has done to date. lets see what happens when his heart is no longer with us and levy plays hardball. levy does what he must to stall the move and get top dollar, but it also means the player has to kick up a fuss too. modric was world class for us and was always going to move on and I don't really understand the resentment. As for dawson, yes he has shown a great attitude but what else could he have done? The real credit goes to AVB, firstly he never excluded dawson, the player has rightly commended his treatment throughout - he has been treated with respect and honesty, AVB has created a sense of meritocracy where dawson knows that if he shows enough in training he will get a chance and finally AVB has had the courage to publicly say I was wrong about dawson and it is lucky that we didn't sell him... wow, compare all of that to how harry would have treated a player he announced was surplus to requirements - he would have been frozen out, ostracised, and on principal harry would never admit to a mistake so no matter what the player showed in training he would never get a chance. yet again AVB showing who the great man manager is
Guernman
Adebayor, Abedayor,Abedayor- Some supprters should ask themselves if there commitment to club and players is not more questionable than Abedayors. The rent a quote ex players stir a controversity to create a discussion and sell media advertising space. Thats what the media do. Supporters should encourage and stick together behind the team. London Talk Sport and Evening Standard are examples of Cuckoo`s living out of others nest.
camper
wonder what our thinking of Adebayor will be if he grabs winners against West Ham and Arsenal in the next six days? Fans are fickle and always need a pantomine villain and at the moment EA is the perfect candidate. saying that he doesnt help himself
oxfordspur
Adebayors recent statement about it not being his fault, might be totally correct and I have no doubt he was under pressure from both sides, but perhaps he also needs to understand that he needs to tickle a few peoples tummies sometimes and not only in his performance, but also in his words, which could easily be aimed at positivity towards tottenhem and his ambitions to take us forward. perhaps it would be a lie, but if it sounds right, we might just believe it
oxfordspur
Dawson's attitude and the subsequent decision to retain his services are both excellent. He's never going to be a truly great defender, but he is very good and certainly no liability. Just what we need to allow us to rotate our centre backs to get the most out of all of them for the entire season, while saving our best for the most demanding encounters. He also serves as an example to other players of what is possible, if they knuckle down and try hard.
darkenvai
My opinion, but Dawson gets an easy ride with the Spurs fans. Yes he has a great attitude and is a top bloke but if that's the nicest thing we can say about him then there is something wrong. As the club's 4th or 5th choice centre half, perhaps he has a future. However, anyone with his positional sense, lack of reading of the game and his willingness to get dragged out of position is not someone we should be hanging our hat on for the first team. Dawson is also a poor communicator across the back line and it's only been players like Gallas, King and Woodgate who have got him organised. He's clearly coming to his peak as a centre half and we can all see improvements but I'm not convinced in any way he is the answer. I certainly don't want him any where near the England team even if he plays well in the Prem.
muttley
I remember Adebayor getting slated plenty last season, even when he was banging them in for fun or setting others up to do so. It's funny how some players rub fans up the wrong way while others don't.
darkenvai
Daws and AVB deserve the credit...does Ade deserve the flack? The good thing is attitude is easily changed, not by other people but by oneself...Ade can change his attitude instantly. Let's see him start tonight...we need him....
shedboy2
I've always though our attitude was mental.

Spuds-U-Like
Dawson is the ideal CB for a club like spurs and in the CB department we have the ideal set-up with the players we have. Two top class internationals in Kaboul and Verts, the seasoned, solid, reliable Dawson who will do a job when called upon and the young gun that is Caulker. Gallas allowed the other four time to settle and adjust and will be moved on come the summer. Ade has been critised for his earlier season performances. Since his return from south Africa (when he was fined by the club for not returning on time) he has put in a shift in the games he's played. AVB's system is different to Rednapps and the scoring opertunitys for Ade have been reduced but he has gotten on with the job in hand and not complained about where he has been played. I can't really fault Ade in the last month after a opening half of the season where money/transfer wrangles, lack of fitness, Red card, the ACON and Defoes early form saw Ades oppertunities very limited. Hopefully another couple of games in the squad will see a better understanding being forged with Ade and Bale/Holtby/Lennon. But would you risk him against Arsenal?
Slurms McKenzie
Spursex - You appear to be rewriting history, he didn't get anyone on a plane, not even himself. If a player has other priorities and only sees his club as a convenient cash cow then that may work very well for the player but it certainly won't for the club. Its not even about being mercenary, BAE says he plays for pay but he would never have behaved like Adebeyor.
jod
Jod - you are quite rightly getting a good kicking for this article. The only attitude that matters is that shown on the pitch. Like all players he has good days and bad days, but we are definitely stronger with him leading the line. As long as AVB picks him he should have unequivocal support from us fans, as should all the others who get personal criticism from people who know f.a. about them.Yes this is a forum for all views so yours is as valid as everybody else's but imo they do not fall into the definition of support.
Love totty
jod - You are clearly biased against Ade and won't let the facts get in the way of your negativity towards Ade. Waste of time trying to discuss with those that don't want to see.

Ade,stop talking and start scoreing! 10 to 15 in the prem should do the trick.

You need more than attitude though. At least with Adebayor if he had a great attitude you'd have a very good player. With Dawson, with a great attitude you'd still get an average player as his talents are limited. Berbatov was the best example. With a great attitude we'd have probably had a world class player but instead he let that hold him back his whole career. On paper, having Bale, Holtby and Lennon in behind Ade looks like our best bet but it will depend on Ade to lead the line and make it work.
muttley
Oh the irony of a fan or supporter complaining about a players poor attitude... I'm sorry but everyone is an individual spurred on by what u feel in life. Perhaps u should support rather than complain about other people's attitudes jod
Mix26
Ade is awesome. We are lucky to have him. I love Ade.
mattspurs1982
I like the bloke, your right he neer complains, but personally I dont think hes good enough. Especially not now that we play higher up the pitch and have much more of he ball. He's great when defending deep, but a liability when playing with a high line.
oi.you.there
We don't really know what players attitude is really like all we do is assume re how they perform and through their body language and effort on the pitch. Re Dawson credit to him for getting on with it and getting back into the team. Personally we have a good player who of course is not world class and who has limitations but he has done well for us. He works better with certain pairings but overall I think he is a valuable player. Yes we are progressing and he will not be our first choice but he is a good back up and will always push for a starting place when we have so many games. I prefer him to Gallas and he has more experience than Caulker. He is a top guy from what I observe. AVB if he has admitted he made a mistake then that is a good sign, shows his humble side and flexibility. I agree with the comments made re HR if he had made a mistake he would never admitted it and the player would have been excluded, he did that with various players - so well done AVB.

Re Modric attitude - he did what most players/people do who heart goes out of their job - he kicked up a fuss. I think he could have dealt with it better as he was under contract but we don't know what really went off with him and Levy so may be he felt he had a real gripe with Levy and decided to kick up a fuss - again we don't know. I think he seemed like a decent guy but we don't know. I think he was like Keane and Berby - always thought Berby was a good guy and still do I think he kicked up a fuss because he felt let down by change of managers and lack of signings - ambition from club. However, Keane never struck me as a decent guy - his attitude on the pitch was often childlike so it didn't surprise me caused trouble to get his own way - look at how many clubs he left.

Re Ade I don't really take to him as I think he is lazy. He obviously has some talent even though he has limitations - his ball control is woeful at times and he also misses a lot of chances not that clinical. However, he has the ability to make things happen when he is on his game. His body language this season has appeared to be 'not interested' he has also been lazy. However, he didn't get the right start missing pre season, then injuries and when he was fit Defoe was on fire. Now I am not sure whether all this amounts to having a bad attitude. May be he is a confident player a player that needs to feel wanted a player that needs to be No 1. We all have different personalities. Some players if they are put in the lime light actually cannot cope with it they are quieter and more reserved and some players need to be in the lime light to function.

We don't know what went off pre season - the length of time it took him to arrive and we don't know what when off in ACN - he obviously looks after his Country people and friends and family so this shows he has a good warm side to him but regards football he does seem to go hot and cold and has had problems at previous clubs. I am not keen on keeping him and didn't want him to sign as I predicted he wouldn't be the player we needed but he is here now so I will support him. It makes no sense not supporting him as he and Defoe need support to get them scoring and contributing. Before Defoes injury he had gone several games without a goal and Ade hasn't and Ade has been woeful most of the season and we need that to change and being supporting is the only way I feel to help them - no point kicking someone when they are down. Everything could change in an instant with Ade - one good game and he could go on a run of games that bring us goals. I feel there will be changes in the summer any way I hope for the remainder of this season we get Ade and Defoe up and running again.
thfan
Some good comments, and it's encouraging that most are trying to be patient with Ade. To add, AvB's treatment of Ade, as well as Dawson, seems to have been very well handled. No examples or excuses made for anyone, just letting things develop in their own time. I even like the timing of Ade's article: delayed enough not to be reactionary and just before Ade's best half of football of the season. It was also quite a sound defense of what happened at the ANC.
ardone
Its all about performances. The fact is, Dawsons Great "attitude" almost makes up for his lack of actual footballing quailities. If you look at Berbatovs lazy attitude on the pitch we would have torn him a new one if he wasnt banging goals in week in week out. If ADE starts scoring then his "attitude" will soon be skipped over. The fcat is Dawsons peformnaces and attitude has been above par this season, ADE's have been very below par. Like OX said, if he scored tonight and next sunday all would be forgotten. The fact is i cant see hom scoring again this season on current performances. Ekotto need a kick up the ass more than anyone. Not his usual self at the moemnt but im sure that will come with games.
hudderspur
I think it's important to remember about adebayor that he received a lot of pretty nasty abuse from this very club long before he joined, simply because of the colour shirt he was wearing. It was a f'ing brave move to come here, but we accepted him and last season he played well and with a smile on his face. ade doesn't 'owe us', the fans, very much at all. we haven't shown any loyalty to him aside from when he's on form, which is not always under a player's control - injury, transfer dealings. Maybe we should show a little more faith in him and take a look at our own behaviour too, not just now but over our entire 'relationship' with ade
BS Baffles Brains
People all credit Dawsons great Attitude. However i see it a bit differently. From reports i've read and they are quotes from AVB and Dawson. Dawson was made club captain and he had a meeting with AVB to discuss his role. In this meeting he was told he would be a squad player and played as and when and would not be first choice. With this he asked to leave and was then told he could leave if he wished. The only club who came in for him were QPR so he stayed as didn't want to play for a relegation candidate. If a team like everton or liverpool had come in do you think he would still be here. He stayed and the rest is history and he's performing. The problem is for the press its not an AVB bashing headline if its Dawson wants to leave for first team football. He has fought for his place and is playing well. But lets not give him too much credit for his attitude. He had no option but to stay and fight and he'd been told he would be used in rotation and when needed already. He got lucky Kaboul got lengthy lay off and then Benny got injuired as suddenly only had three fit CB as Verts covered LB. Anyways thats my 2pence worth. COYS win tonight and go 3rd.
ChirpysDaMan
I seem to remember reading that Ade was the same at Le Ar$e and that Whinger worked with him. Getting his first touch right and his finishing. He was similar last season but scored and assisted more than any other striker in the league. Everyone is jumping on this second season syndrome that Ade's been labelled with imho. Maybe a lot of this is his own fault, ie taking soo long to sign, no pre-season etc., but then his injury and Defoes form kept him out. He hasn't helped his situation with this protracted ANC palava either or having to have a jet sent to fetch him home especially when he should have known about Daffy's injury and tried his hardest to get back. So, although it's mostly his fault, IMHO, I think we all need to get behind him especially AVB. Do a HR and put your arm around him and tell him how good he is and how well he's done and how we need him to be our No 1. Then sell him at the end of the season.

Should Adebayor not show the same commitment for the club that pays his wages as much as he does his country ? Not alot to ask .
Talk about defend the undefendable
big cockeral
Spurs had to send a private plane themselves to get Adebayor back from Africa ,how many times as that happened at any other club with any other player ?
Laugh at the way Spurs fans fight his corner when clearly he has no care for you .Just because a player wears the Spurs shirt doesn`t mean he should be loved & given 100% support .It works both ways ,i`d rather save it for the ones who deserve it .Bale ,Vertonghen ,Sandro ,Dembele ,Lloris are brilliant & carrying the team .
Adebayor needs to start performing & fix himself up ,i don`t think he wants to be here & his attitude should not be tolerated .
Against West Ham would be a good start because here`s there to please us ,we`re not there to please him .Man up

Dawson does have a good attitude. He is. Fantastic back up to have. He really is probably just shading 3rd house right now... Caulker will be better long term. The first two cb at the club by a mile r Kabul and verts. If Dawson just stopped playing that long ball I would probably have a lot more appreciation for him. He's never say die defending makes up for hi lack of pace. Solid defender just stop that long ball and hopefully he's content at being 3rd or 4th choice long term.
vdvdaman
As for ade we really have no other choice right now. So get off his back and support the guy. Clint Is crap Defoe is injured and r marquee striker will be coming in one of these windows lol we can only hope!!!!
vdvdaman
Lol big c u could use ur exact argument against urself? Does Ade have an attitude problem or is Ade just being Ade? We all knew what we were getting before he signed 2 weeks into the season. Some people are simply acting like spoilt brats on here. The article would have been fair to criticize his form and rather focus on how or why he currently is not performing yet the author focuses on non footballing matters which he clearly has zero insight on. The club, the manager and the player have all discussed this pvt so where on earth anyone here has inside info to base their opinion on is actually hilarious.
Mix26
Was sorry to hear about Daws being sold in the summer but accepted it was probably a good price for a player who may not fit into the new system. Daws insisted on staying and has proved a lot of people wrong. As you rightly say, under Redknapp he would have been frozen out (a la Basssong, Kranjcaer, Corluka...), but in AVB we have a man who puts the team before his own pride and his admitting that it would've been a mistake to sell Daws was good to hear, but for Daws it must have been such a boost. As you say, a true man manager, not one for favourites.

Big C - as I said to Jod your view is as valid as anybody else's. My view is that you sound like a broken record - a sad old 78 at that - in your constant disparaging of current players. Not a great exhibition of support in my book. Strengths, weaknesses and preferences are one thing, downright character assassination is another.
Love totty
As for Ade i think he's getting more of a hard time than he deserves. Even the commentators against Lyon were on his back saying how much beter he should have done. He was feeding on scraps and surrounded by 6 players every time he got the ball. But I actually thought he did ok under the circumstances. We are playing a different way than last season and he needs time to adjust, he's struggled through injuries (and a stupid suspension v le arse). he does seem out of sorts but i thought there was a glimmer of improvement v lyon, AVB again showing encouragement through the media. Even if he's playing badly he's still wearing our shirt, so lets get off his back and show him some love, if thats what it takes to get the best out of him. COYS!!!!
Yorkspur
Adebayor lick arses watching the West ham game ?
big cockeral
Adebayor is useless, indifferent and sloppy in front of goal. He's only playing because we have no strikers at all. Our next game should be his final chance to redeem himself. Not only for his attitude but also for what he did in the first match. he should win this game. If he fails to turn up yet again I'd never play him again.
Moscovite
Big C, let's not forget we don't pay Adebayor's wages, only part of them, Man City pay the rest to get rid, that tells you something. This was probably the factor that persuaded Levy to sign him in the first place, as well as his form last year, when trying to get a contract, he is a shadow of that player now.
Frank
Big c HAVE TO ADMIT HE WAS A PASSENGER FOR THE MAJORITY OF THE GAME AND HIS HEADER WAS A CRYING SHAME. Sorry about the caps but I'm not retyping.
Slurms McKenzie
Mix26, that's precisely the point we didn't "know what we were getting" unless we believed the hype about his attitude at Arsenal, Man City, and Real Madrid. Some of us thought during his season on loan that here he was going to be different. He got his his megga bucks contract (with Man City chipping in) and he turned instantly to a waste of space, and has contributed next to nothing this season, he has been an expensive mistake. To think we could have signed a younger, quicker, keener, more committed and .more prolific striker than him, 3 goals is hardly prolific by the end of February, never mind the sob stories and excuses. He can give his wages to whatever charity he likes, but it is a pity he don't earn, rather than just get them, first. Somebody should sort him out, or blow him out, one or the other.
