This article is written on the basis of a sweeping assumption that at the end of this season we finish in a top four position and hence are in next season's CL
My thoughts are that we are now at a significant stage in team development. We have a strong manager bringing consistency that has been sadly missing over the last decade, and longer. We have the framework of a seriously good title challenging team with the added bonus of younger players of tremendous potential.
I have always worried that DL has adopted a philosphy of buying promising players, flirt with top six in the league and the cups whilst keeping the club in the black financially. This has worked. But, now this summer, more than at any other time there has to be the major, significant and dare I say it record breaking investment in player acquisitions.
We all know where we need to add to the team. Rooney is again getting lots of media coverage linking him with a move away from United. Is this the sort of acquisition that will demonstrate the seriousness with which we are now moving ahead? Will it show that no longer are we a club that sells our best players to the likes of City and United?
When Fergie makes the call to ask about Bale the reply is 'No chance, but while you're on the line I want to speak with you about Rooney'. I accept entirely that there are the issues over terms in all transfers but I am putting out there the general view that now is the time, for once, to maybe let the heart rule the head and add the touch of gloss to reach the tipping point where we become a dominating hunter and not the hunted.

Why do we think we can pay for him ?
Frankly, we will get someone like Benteke for 15m or go after a Negredo or Soldado or usual chase on Damiao.
The one player who is showing glimpses of it is James Rodriguez of Porto. But the sticky point is he is already rated by Porto at 25m+. Reports in last couple of days say that we are currently scouting him.
30m-40m signing on fee. Plus anywhere near his 250,000 a week salary.
I dont think so... id buy Sanchez for that....
for that money or thereabouts id buy two players...
you could have any "2" of...
Alexis Sanchez
Moutinho
Mario Gomez
Adrian Lopez
Lewandowski
Eriksenn
Damaio
Negredo
Soldado
Benteke
Sorry Fredspur, not trying to belittle your article mate. I appreciate you taking the time to provide something for us to debate, but Rooney at THFC is about as likely as Recaro Redknapp saying "No comment" to a SSN reporter.

Must say, Defoe looks quite a useful player in front of Bale. Now if only he'd stop giving up the second a ball leaves his foot. Again Thursday, rather than following up on his very good shot he needed to go to one knee in disappointment that the shot he hit right at the keeper was parried. If he'd followed up, perhaps he'd have gotten to the rebound. Thankfully Sigurdsson follows up on shots. Anyway, great movement, energy and team play from Defoe. Perhaps AVB has got him on the same page as everyone else. If so, we could be in for a very good finish. COYS
