I know for some, talking about transfers, with months to go before the window opens is madness. But behind the scenes, clubs will already be jockeying for places in the summer transfer merry-go-round.
In the last few days, Spurs have been linked with a likely or unlikely move for Madrid's Gonzalo Higuain for what would seem a very respectable £24m. It is clear that Spurs need to drastically improve in the striking area of the team and should they manage to steal a marquee signing such as the Argentinean, who has an excellent scoring record for club and country and would appear to the the type of player that would excite the fans, improve the team and also make a statement of intent, that Spurs are a team that is seriously looking to kick on.
It may well be that Champions league qualification is the difference between our having any chance or no chance of getting a really top quality striker and we are sure to also have huge competition from many of the box-office sides, who are looking for a top rated scorer, with City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, all seemingly in need of added numbers, and thats just in the English Prem… But, would the prospect of being the first choice be a key to any move for a player that may prefer regular football over a bigger pay cheque? Higuain has been out of favour for much of his time at Real and though he has also suffered with injury, he might be looking to re-establish himself as the main No9, as opposed to being the competition or rotational selection when the first choice is being saved for the bigger games.
There is also the belief that the players pregnant girlfriend, has already moved to London after accepting a role for the BBC, therefore new baby, girlfriend in London and a possible need to be playing more often (lets not forget the World Cup at the end of next season) and it is nailed on that he will move to London! Right?… If that were true, we would still be up against the vastly richer Chelsea and our beloved neighbours, that may or may not want to make a spending statement of their own in the summer, but could the winner of a CL place also get their man?
Already we are reading about, Radamel Falcao, Robert Lewandowski, Edinson Cavani and a few more, being linked with major moves in the summer, and of course they will attract equal and probably bigger interest from the elite and massively rich teams, which may well make them out of Tottenham's reach, but those players moving create a transfer merry-go-round, which could see for example Cavani replacing Torres. Torres or Louis Suarez, replacing Falcao. Falcao replacing Higuain, etc etc. You assume that the likes of Juve, PSG, Napoli and many more european teams will be in the running for the better players, but though that may push Spurs out of the running for the biggest and best, it may allow us to snatch a player that is pushed out as a result of a bigger fish, wanting instant success and therefore sacrificing a current minnow. Someone like Romelu Lukaku, who may be third choice of below at Stamford Bridge?
There will be many rumours that Spurs signing a player like Higuan will only happen if Spurs sell Gareth Bale the other way, but is that really the case? Firstly, Higuain is possibly going to be in a reasonable bargaining position, as Real may want to sell him more than he actually wants or needs to leave, therefore Real wanting to trade him in for Bale, may not appeal to the player, who might prefer to go somewhere else, even if that has to be in or near London. Also could the prospect of Spurs finally getting that top quality striker, coupled with CL football persuade Bale to stick with us for at least another year. Again, he is a new father and is enjoying his football, so is it really certain that he would want to leave or that Spurs would consider selling unless he wasn't having a major tantrum?
I know it is all media and fan speculation, but we all know that clubs are already sounding out players and agents over possible ins and outs and it is naive to think otherwise. You would like to think that AVB and Mr Levy are already seriously looking at possible targets, whether Damiao, Higuain or Peter Crouch, and will certainly have a Plan A, B, C and D, depending on the summer movement and also their budget, which may or may not be boosted by Champions league football. Problem is, that so many other clubs will be in exactly the same position and doing the very same thing...

I agree with you, re 2 massive games coming up etc BUT those games do not & will not have any hindrance upon our transfer activity, or those responsible for it. AVB only has to say "I'd like X player please", then his part is done & he can stick to what he's doing best, ie selecting brilliant teams & deploying brilliant tactics :)
Oxfordspur - I'd like to apologise for my outburst on the "Did we miss a trick with Andros" article this morning. I know I shouldn't have done it BUT the fecking idiot (you know who I mean) is REALLY starting to get under my skin now!!
Personally I think ADE will be off to Russia, that’s just asks the question of what will become of Defoe. AVB has said he rates him highly, but with age against him and what looks like another very average season behind him maybe Levy will push for a final pay day on him. Higuian is very good shout. Could afford the wages, could attract him as he will be pretty much surplus to requirements at Madrid, and he wont be anywhere near 24m!! My guess would be that we start next season (or at least after the first 3 games!!) Will have a natural no9 (Higuian) perhaps a more versatile player who can play up front or on the flanks like Leondowski and Dempsey as our strikers with Coulibally / Kane / Coulthirst as our 4th choice. Not forgetting bale of course!!
If we only signed two players, a no9 and a utility forward we could set the league on fire. Just imagine a typical 4-3-3 AVB formation up of Lloris Walker Kaboul Verthonghen Fryers Sandro Dembele Holtby Bale Higian Leondowski…….ha that is scary.
I would think that CL qualification in third would be huge step towards getting a decent Number 9, would even think there are more than a few No.9s who would really like to play at Spurs.
Agree that Ade will be off, Russia is the place for him.
Defoe will stay, I think he will be rotated away from the top striker spot and used as a sub, will he accept this?
This may well be a big transfer window for many clubs / players, as mentioned there are no Summer distractions and the World Cup on the horizon.
Also AVB will have had a very good season to assess the complete squad, I really feel more than a couple of our loans will become first team players next year. COYS
It's hard not to feed a troll who's idea of debate is to constantly repeat the same rant over & over again in the deluded belief that if something is said often enough, it becomes a fact. Stay strong buddy.
Siggy is another and I expect livermore is another one going through his paces with AVB and then when AVB has worked with them and seen what he can do with these players then we will either see good results as like Dawson or we will see them moved on. Holtby imo there is a prospect but I think it is a matter of finding a position for him as much as going through some gruelling paces with AVb and learning what AVB wants from him.
Bale, lennon, Dawson, Sandro, Siggy, Defoe have all improved under AVb in such a short time, give Holtby a chance.
Moscovite - Your comments over the last week or so have left me 100% dumbfounded..
a: They are guaranteed to play
b: Will instantly be a hit with the fans, prior to kicking a ball
c: We ARE a club on the up, including one the the best Managers around, best training facilities and new ground (soon)
http://sportwitness.ning.com/forum/topics/tottenham-damiao-bid-just-amazingly-rejected-because-of-currency-
Dark- I can buy an old Merc for peanuts doesn't mean I can afford to run it...as for the players wages remaining confidential perhaps you would like to tell that to the players!
shedboy - What more do you want me to say to you. I simply showed you proof that we did bid in excess of our previous record fee. Apart from City, Chel$ki & the laughable Liverpoo, tell me another PL club that is fighting to achieve/maintain top 4 AND has spent over £16million on any single player?
Cast your mind back that couple of years ago that you speak of. Levy DID want to sign Suarez, he DID want to sign Negredo etc BUT our manager at the time, remember him? He dismissed them out of hand because "it's hard to improve upon Crouchie, Defoe & Pav".. That same manager also turned down Michu TWICE, once for FREE lol. That is now apparently an ongoing joke amongst our coaching & playing staff.
Jan Vertonghen has scored with his last 3 attempts on target in all competitions ;).... Not funny? Well this will help the humour come through. Vertonghen has scored 4 PL goals since signing for THFC, that is 4 times MORE PL goals than Wilshere has scored for Arseanal in his whole career. :)..
Peter so if I can summarize your lengthy tome- we can't afford the players that we (Arry/AVB) want but the players we can afford are not good enough, really??? ...what have our scouts been doing? So we have money that we can spend on a stadium that won't stop us spending it on players....where was this money going up until now then?....smoke and mirror all you like but every penny spent on the stadium is coming from the Spurs pot....some finance with interest attached.
Peter's said it better than I can about financing for the new stadium, but your suggestions about Levy being too tight to pay for expensive players just doesn't sit with the idea of him paying over the odds for Dempsey's salary, especially if he has no resale value. It might say something about incompetence but nothing about miserliness.
As for Levy becoming a multi-millionaire thanks to Spurs, he was loaded before that, but it's fair to say that his fortunes have improved in line with the clubs. I can't see much wrong with that. I wish more businessman would do likewise.
