FC Basel!

Tottenham have been drawn against reigning Swiss Champions CFC Basel, in the Quarter finals of the Europa league!

Basel currently sit in 2nd place in their domestic league, 2 points behind leaders Grasshoppers. But are currently in excellent form, with only two defeats (12 wins) in their last seventeen games, in all competitions. So they certainly won't be a side that Spurs can take lightly. This season, they have had a mixed time in European competition, getting knocked out of the Pre-group stages of the Champions league to CFR Cluj and were runners up to Genk in the group stages, with 9 points from their six games, winning two of their games and both of those at home.

Of course it is difficult to know how seriously they took the early games and I must confess that I am not an avid watcher of them or Swiss football in general, so wont make any claims about how they are actually playing. but their current form is good and no doubt their confidence if high. Knock out stage wins over Dnipro (3-1) and Zenit (2-1), who of course knocked out Liverpool, give some indication that they are a capable side, who when I have watched them in CL games in previous seasons, have looked well organised and spirited. Somehow, they have always seemed to keep in games, even when they are struggling.

The first leg at White Hart Lane on Thursday, April 4 and the return leg will be the following week (11th). Both games are scheduled for an 8.05pm kick off.

would have taken this at the start of the draw!
Not the glamour tie I was hoping for, but I do think this is probably the best we could have hoped for draw-wise. Think Basel will also be happy with the draw to have one of the big boys.
Thank god for that, the EL has been much harder than advertised so far!!! Lazio, Lyon and Inter! Its like the blood Champions League.
Tactically Challenge
best draw poss
i reckon it's the easiest tie. i know people might say other teams might not be as tough but factor in traveling times to those places. we got a great draw!
Good draw but we do have Everton at home 3 days later which is a real 6 pointer for us and, the following Thursday away leg is followed by Chelski at the Bridge which is even more of a six pointer.....dont know much about Basel but with no disrespect to their league I would hope they could be considered as the weakest side in the! if we could build a good lead to take to the second leg.....ha! ha! we might be able to save a few players for the Chelski game.......

I have been to the Basel stadium a couple of times, I fortunately do quite a bit of business in Switzerland. It is quite an intimidating place. Very good home support. About 5/6 years ago Basel played Liverpool in CL and Merseyside Police had more trouble at Basel game than either home fixtures against Everton and Man U. That said I agree with 57% of my fellow Vital members my preference would have Basel. I just hope my Swiss friends can sort out tickets, only problem is I will need to learn Swiss German.
About as good as we could get. The English teams have avoided each other and we don't have the travel problems of going to Russia. Fenerbahce v Lazio also means one dangerous team is going out. Its a strange season. Normally English teams go out of the Europa league early but progress in the Champions league keeps the coefficient high. This year its the other way around.
Bingo..... I live just 10 mins from St Jakob Park in Basel.... At last a game close to me. We should win this, Basel are well organised and efficient, but we should have enough to win it...
On the spurs vs inter article this is the exact team that i wanted, i also mentioned that i wanted to avoid the russian teams, got my wish ;)
spurfect one
After such a tough draw for rounds 2 and 3 you'd have to be happy with this. April is crunch time in the league and the Europa, but the route to the semis could have been much tougher than this.
nice one spurster! i wish they'd get drawn against shanghai shenhua sometime soon... dieing for a game.
Chelski have 6 matches between now and when we meet them at the Bridge and one of them is the match at Rubin Kazan on the Thursday 11th April and we meet them 3 days later on Sunday.....Mmmmm! We could do with a hatfull on the 4th April and leave most of the squad resting back in London for the return....! Oops flying pink pig..window..and all that jazz !!
OyVeh Maria
good draw for us...just hope that there is no complacency from the it's time for the team to forget EL and re-focus on the PL....we need to finish in the top4 ironicly it could be Chelsea again standing between us and Top4 and EL victory!
Thank you footballing God for the draw. Whatever may be the performance yesterday, no way we are going to repeat that against Basel.
Pretty happy with this draw, to be honest. We have had tough games in Europa so far. Am I right in thinking that we had Lazio and Rubin Kazan in our group stage?
Yidinchina you never know !!.. Bring plenty of wonga lads,, Basel is one expensive place to drink, i mean expensive... Mr Pickwicks is an english pub in town, watched a spurs game there recently, a few Basel fans around, had some good banter with them, but then again we hadn't just knocked them out of Europe !!.. they have a bit of a reputation over here... Also,, plenty of strip/sex clubs for all you horny sorts,, all legal here.... naughty naughty
Chelsea play

Southampton (30 March)
Man Utd (1 April)
Rubin Kazan (4 April)
Sunderland (7 April)
Rubin Kazan (11 April)
Tottenham (14 April)
Liverpool(21 April)
Man United (4 May)
Villa (11 May)
Everton (19 May)

+ If they go through FA Cup & EL rounds add another couple of games. Chelsea are well & truly fecked with their fixture list
What OyVeh said! COYS.
SpursOne2 Chelseas fixtures, it was pointed out on one of the other threads (by Coopsie) that if Chelsea beat Manu in the FA Cup replay our game with them could be moved to the end of the season (it will be SF w/e). Also pointed out that if we and Chelsea progress to the final in EL, that PL game may be in the same week!! Not impossible.
I thought vs. Fenerbahce was the most Easiest tie! After what Basel did to Manure in the CL,I think it will be harder than expected!!Banana Skin
Damn sydqcb5, didnt realise Chelski fixture list was hectic like that
It was about time to have a favorable draw for us. After Lyon and Inter ties, what we didn´t need was a trip to Russia or to Turkey. Basel is, at least im theory, the easiest draw we could have been handed. Plus, not a long trip. Had we beated Liverpool, I wouldn´t mind being drawn Lazio or even Chelsea, but placing reason before emotion, Basel fits better for us. I just hope the players do not enter pitch thinking they are already on semi-finals.
Best draw in terms of our chances of winning, but we'd better see the performance of our lads upped from yesterday's or we'll sink like a stone. Three months without defeat and now two losses in a row. Time to get back on track, lads. No reason not to do so, but the proof of doing so will be in the tasting. COYS.
Total knobhead
Yeaterday-It was like losing a game in the premier league, and still getting 3 points!!!
As long as we don't play like Basil Fawlty!
Metal Spurs
TK, we have been defeated by Leeds United in the last 3 months. We were not ompletely indefeated , though I agree with you two defeats in a row is something Spurs had not been through since City and Arsenal matches. I don´t mind losing yesterday because we could lose and the lads showed great determination to win on extra-time (before scoring, both Verts and Gallas had clear chances and Naughton was also on the frame). What upsetted me was Liverpool last sunday. Fulham at the Lane became a key match for us, Chelsea and Arsenal at the same time.
As long as we don't play Walker, Friedel, Defoe; Livermore and Parker together; Dembele or Holtby on the right, we can beat anybody.
AlexSpur, spot on.
out of subject but don't you feel confident when wenger says every game is a cup final having not won one in the last 8 years ?
I Heard Basel won the herb cup beating Gimnastic Tarragona in the final.
very good draw for us indeed, with a view that we dont travel to Russia or Turkey. Not an easy draw but its the Qtrs, there shouldn't be easy draws at this stage. Are the semis an open draw to or is the route to the final now mapped out? What a finale to AVBs first season knocking out Chelsea in Amsterdam :) Though I would rather meet NUFC in the final lol
All ready on Coops...all ready on.
Definitely the best draw we could have got at this stage. We’ve avoided some real tricky teams and locations – cheski will be travelling 1000 miles on a Thursday night and Newcastle have the toughest draw possible. That said, we can’t underestimate Basel – they’re a well drilled team with more recent European experience then we’ve got at the moment. They’ve also got a manager akin to our own sir AVB. In Murat Yakin they have a really promising young manager whose one to watch in the next few years
Terrible draw for us, we needed Chelsea. No traveling and they're forced to play Torres ;-)

Would rather have away leg first but that's just being picky I guess. Although didn't Basel beat United in the CL to knock them out of group stages last year?
happy with this draw and I hope Chelsea get knocked out and struggle with their fixture list that is building up. we can beat any of the remaining teams with our first team but may be more tricky if we play too many second choice players such as Friedal, Gallas and if first team players keep making mistakes-Walker and if our strikers don't start scoring-Ade, Defoe and if we keep our CM strong lol
coopsieyid, good editing, but who do we play instead of Parker? Perhaps we should play Huddlestone and Dembele together? Surely Parker will play better next to Dembele? He was awful last night, I don't know why AVB has told him to attack? He's playing more like a box-to-box midfielder now. On top of all of that, he's scared to shoot.
Guys i know Parker was bad last night, but he was immense in the first tie and lets be honest, Thudd and LiverPoor are no where near his standard so lets back him
ITS OUR YEAR BOYS!!!! CHAVS IN THE FINAL!!!! Our second team have done great to get this far, no more room for sentiment though. Bench Gallas & Brad from now on, Freidel especially did very well so respect, but its within our grasp now to make the semis......COYS
Lots of people slating Friedel and Gallas but to be totally honest the protection in front/around them was dreadful. Livermore and Parker were like dogs chasing their own tails. Vertonghen was at fault for their 4th goal, Naughton was far too high up the pitch and more often than not was caught out of position. Walker's position sense is dreadful only his pace saves him. Parker was again far too advanced.

I can only assume AVB thought it was in the bag and decided to try a few new things, as long as him has realized they didn't work then it was a good exercise!
Good draw, so let's just sort it out.
see yous in Amsterdam Southern-softies ! all thiese extra Euro games aint helping your Top4 finish. might just fall between 2 stools cockneyboys haha
Papiss the Meerkat
You haven't thought it through yiddy mate. We play the Chavs, unless they need an FA Cup replay, after the 2nd legs. They travel to the furthest outpost in UEFA, Rubin Kazan, whilst we have a short day trip to Basel, 4 times shorter the length of travel for us than for them. They travel 2,325 miles on way & we travel 575 miles one way. They'll be knackered by the time they get back on the Friday whilst we would have had an extra day's recovery.

*one way*, sorry.

see yous in Amsterdam Southern-softies ! all thiese extra Euro games aint helping your Top4 finish. might just fall between 2 stools cockneyboys haha
Papiss the Meerkat
big-c - second leg away usually is the preferable scenario. In the event of extra time, you get the upper hand with away goals - as we had a longer window for scoring away goals. That is what took us through last night. Plus you get the opportunity to run up a score before you go away. Walker has played far worse than those 3 that you mentioned above.
You're not that Saltysellars tw@ come back in disguise to haunt us with you complete drivel are you Pa***** the Meerkat?

Papis$ i hope we do meet in the final! All the best against benfica
Papis$ i hope we do meet in the final! All the best against benfica
the question is will AVB finally drop defoe? he hasn't dropped him yet except when injured. I have a horrible feeling he won't do it and will play both strikers and bale on the wing again. please prove me wrong AVB. Adebayor needs a run as the loan striker. he is a facilitator, no coincidence that bale suddenly starts knocking them in when defoe was absent. adebayor makes space and passes, defoe gets in the way and shoots. I hold no hope that friedel will be dropped in the EL, but please please please drop defoe.
The anti-Spurs bloke/duo on Talksport have been on air since Friday 4.00pm, it now being 4.27, and it took them until 4.23 to get anyone at all to phone them about the ''outrageousness of the away goals rule". As if that is the concern of these two. Hoping for some gullible Spurs fan to phone in, instead it was a Scottish fellow talking about Bayern and Arsenal, while the shock-jock tried to 'Spurs it up' as usual, before getting a Liverpool fan to talk on air who must have phoned thinking it was really about this rule. The long silence from Spurs fans not being provoked by these two has had me proud of the silent eloquence of the savvy fans among listeners.
Oh what a shame, at 4.35pm, thirty five minutes into the programme of just two or three short calls from others, a Spurs fan, 'John', has phoned in. What a mug.
I tweeted the tw@s, but they won't read it out because I called them a pair of dicks.

Does anyone have ANY RELIABLE info on Kaboul & Dempsey fitness. The Liverpool game showed that tiredness causes mistakes (we had tough games v goons & Inter since Pool strolled over Wigan), so FULHAM needs fresh faces. Clearly Lloris, Bale, Lennon, Dawson, Caulker are all fresh. Not a BAE fan (where is Friers) although he is also fresh, as is Young Carrol. If fit, I would get KABOUL in at Right back & give Walker a break. No Easy draws now & as others have said, Everton *& Chelsea games mean we need everyone back fit and challenging. COYS
i take it ur talking about adrian durham, hes just a windup merchant who knows nothing about football. Read some of his articles in the sportsmail - Hes a terriblke pundit
"TK, we have been defeated by Leeds United in the last 3 months. We were not ompletely indefeated , though I agree with you two defeats in a row is something Spurs had not been through since City and Arsenal matches," wrote AlexSpur.

Thanks for reminding me of the best-forgotten Leeds defeat. I guess I was reviewing the calendar in my mind only for PL matches. Or perhaps I was subconsciously refusing to remember the dismal match vs. Leeds U.

This acknowledged, we were on a damned good run for three months, and now we've lost two in a row. Alarming.

AVB had best get the train back on the tracks. He did so convincingly after the rocky start to the PL season, and now is the time for him to do so again.

I didn't feel yesterday as though we'd won anything, even though we got past Inter. It's a poor way to advance.

Total knobhead
Agreed Hudds, he comes out with all this $h1te just to get a reaction & the mugs fall for it every time. To think that both him & that gob$h1te average cricketer who was once a schoolboy for Barnsley & thinks he therefore knows everything football, get paid to peddle their bile. No wonder everyone calls it TalkSh1te! Does anyone think this discusion would have happened if we hadn't gone through on away goals? Of course not otherwise they would have been talking about it yesterday when the Arse went out on the rule. They only gob off at Spurs.

Fair play to the Spurs fans phoning in now, they're avoiding the topic & talking about the game. Well done lads!

It is an unimpressive way to have progressed but it may also have handed out an important lesson about nothing being safe, secure and won until scoring goals while keeping other goals out or down to a minimum. That lesson applies in every match Spurs get involved in. The Fulham match this weekend could be challenging, but had anyone really assumed that it or any other match should be regarded any other way?
Guernman, I would love to see Defoe again as an impact sub. AVB, it seems to me wanted to do just that, but we still weren't scoring. Adebayor looks grossly out if shape. My best hope is that Dempsey comes back and starts firing with Bale behind him. Of the three, he is the one that I have the most confidence in to get a goal or assist in 90 minutes on the pitch. Siggy, Bale and Lennon behind Dempsey for me is the way to go. COYS
I agree Peter, Defoe should be a impact sub, but Dempsey can't lead the line (well at Spurs he doesn't seem able to), has to be Ade up front, with either Dempsey behind (who i dont rate at all, would love to see Siggi play that role) and Bale on the left, or Bale behind Ade, and whoever out on the left for me.
be interesting to see Spuds without Sale next season, talk about a 1-man team. this Euro run may well turn out to be this season-ends Arry-for-England divide-n-conquer scenario. got some v.hard Prem games coming up thick and fast and EL games to tire/injure players. I think Arsenal are gonna pip yous again cos they only need to focus on Prem. can't believe how average you penetrate without Sale, aint gonna score many next year lol
Papiss the Meerkat
I also believe the complacency suggestion is a little much. Were Liverpool and Inter going to roll over and play dead at home. They are, regardless of table position, 2 premiere European teams. Individual mistakes cost us in both, but we still could have made life way easier by scoring. We could have had 5 against Liverpool and Walker, Adebayor, Vertonghen, Gallas all should have done much better last night. Friedel could have saved three of the four and really, he just needed to make one more good save and we get it done in regulation. First goal Walker made no effort to get back in the play. Gallas was pathetic gifting the third. What is clear to me is that players like Walker, Defoe, Parker just don't have the footballing brain necessary for titles. Further Friedel and Gallas have been done for 16 months. Ade is just not fit enough. We need some changes in the summer, but for now, the roster is the roster. AVB's subs were good yesterday and he seems to be managing the squad well. Remember, last season we were 3 games in to a stretch of 9 where we managed 6 points. We already have 6 points. A win Sunday will get us back on track and will allow for a bit of a break for some of our players. Hopefully they all return from international break healthy and energized. COYS
Dont know if anyone has already mentioned this as i aint read all the comments but the el draw has been extra kind to us in the respect that Chelsea 2nd leg v Kazan is away in Rubin Kaazan on the Thursday before they play us! I dont know if I want them to beat the mancs or not tho cos if they fo through in the FA Cup coopsie made a good point that our fixture v chelsea may get moved. I think I would prefer to play them on that Sunday following their looooooooong flight back from Kazan (hopefully after they have just lost on penalties! ;0)
peterb..enjoy reading your comments. I asked generally last night, but what did you make of the Caulker/Naughton substitution and moving Verts to LB, when BAE was available as a direct replacement for Naughton. For AVB to, in a sense, make 2 positional changes at that stage of the game seems to me he has lost some confidence in BAE. It was a big call to put Caulker on in those circumstances, and well done to him.
Caulker is a good defensive player and also tries seriously to score at the other end. BAE is bloody good but AVB was justified in keeping him for the weekend match against Fulham.
Lot's of friday forums to ponder over, just posting on this one being the latest edition, after a fantastic 4 days of cheltenham racing, God Bless Bob's Worth for winning the gold cup today and ending the 4 days with a very nice little profit. Having said i would be happy if we lost 3-1 vs Inter, it makes it even better that you can lose 4-1 and only in europe, go through. This is the tie i wanted after last night's fanastic performance, of sheer guts and effort and to play like total phucking morons, makes it so sweet, may Jake Livermore never feature again would be to soon, it's ok I'm wearing my stab prove vest, incase love totty comes knocking. Might be worth sending Fernabache supporters directions to the bar our fans got attacked in Rome, maybe they can do us a favour and knock both out, fans of Lazio and the team. Still onwards and upwards Fulham on sunday and Bale will be fresh, along with other rested players from the Inter game, Lloris, Dawson, BAE and Defoe :-)
spu 4 life
Jacobslad, obviously I don't know the reasons behind the substitutions but if I had to guess I'd proffer the following: Defoe was doing naff all so Holtby was brought in to harry Inter, and he did. While he looked poor at first he pressured every chance he got. Lennon was to get width and control out wide. He was also a defensive replacement. Lennon would have been there on the first goal where both Dembele and Livermore were blind to the danger as Walker sauntered back. The look from Friedel, Naugton, Vertonghen, Livermore and Dembele said it all. Lennon made three great defensive plays and allowed Dembele to slot in in the middle where I'd suggest he should have started. Lastly the one you specifically asked about, Caulker for Naughton with Vertonghen going to LB and Caulker to LCB. This was, IMO, the best move. Naughton was spent. BAE could have come on but, against what most would have expected, Caulker came on. We were getting killed by crosses from the left. Vertonghen moved outside and as he was already at game speed, AVB had to know that Vertonghen would be less likely to lose his man than a cold BAE. Further, the height and presence of Caulker on set pieces and crosses is better than Vertonghen's. very brave move, but I did not question it for a second. Caulker played well, Vertonghen stopped the threat from the left and, unexpectedly, Gallas stepped up his play making several good clearances. Brilliant man management even if I'd have started with different players in a different formation. COYS
peterballb...thanks for your perspective, its funny how people see things differently. At the time I thought why move Verts? Why expose young Caulker to the pressure that was mounting? Why not just put BAE on as direct replacement for Naughton? Anyway, it worked!
As much as we are pleased to have drawn Basel, I bet my bottom dollar that Basel are just as delighted to ave drawn us!!!
We are really missing Sandro in my opinion, he gives the others the freedom to go forward and attack. For some rason Parker has got it into his head that he is more than just a hard working tenacious defensive midfielder and now thinks he is yaya toure and tries to carry the ball out of midfield 50 yards before running around in a circle like a headless chicken and ultimately being tackled or falling over. and worst still when he loses the ball he is not around to do his job of trying to win it back.
Yes Coops i clocked your reference, won't find-us any of the ones i backed in you saggy lag-san-ur, it is the top national hunt meeting of the year, next up will be aintree and the grand national in early april. Anyway looking forward to 3pts vs fulham @ the weekend

Wow Coopsie lovely retort to our Geordie visitor. I feel for him a bit as he probably only popped in to our forum to get warm - spending all winter shirtless can take its toll! As for Mike Ashley he lives very close to where I live. I often see him heading off to his helicopter to head up to Newcastle. It always strikes me that he looks miserable as sin when he is leaving London for Newcastle but always has a smile on his face when he finally gets back to London civilisation. It must be grim up north lad!
Swiss TV last night. The Spurs representative -don't know who he was- at the EL draw in Nyon was asked about the match with FC Basel. He answered that we (THFC) know Basel because we played against them a few years ago. He meant Young Boys Bern who, of course, we played in the Champions League qualifier. How embarrassing! I wonder what qualifications you need for that job?
I THINK, my memory ain't what it used to be, we HAVE played FC Basel before in the CWC/EUFAC/EuropaL, when Christian Gross was their manager. Mind you if we have, it wasn't only a "few" years ago.

Like Inter, it's another potential banana skin, but then, so's a banana. More concerned about Fulham at present.
the_cockerel_crows; ''How embarrassing! I wonder what qualifications you need for that job'' Looks to me as if Pa***** the Meerkat is over qualified, should he apply for his club. Mind you he does write well, one for Peterballb to take under his wing, progress could then be monitored.

I swear that Papi$$ the Meerkat is Saltysellers in another guise.

OMG what a goal from osman for everton
hahaha Coppsie, lovin your cockneyboy attempt at a novel as a riposte. could it be that deep down yous all getting that sinking feeling again as you do 'a Spurs' come the end of the season, especially with Arsenal's easier run-in and no Euro distractions. looking forward to our new rivalry next season as you weaken post-Sale and we already strengthened. loving the Parker three-sixty 10 times per game even more (losing possession 70% of times) ;-)
Papiss the Meerkat
Well played Everton. Amichebe worked his socks off up front - Ade and Defoe are you watching. Coleman brilliant game - are you watching Walker. Utd will be champions - Everton pressed City all game even with ten men.
Everton beating City quite easily really, with Yaya and Kompany. The title race is over. United win it again. Lets hope Bale doesn't go to United.
thefan, I loved their team spirit. That's something else some of our players could learn from that match!. COYS!
with $hitty looseing great chance for us to catch them
it must be sick now for city to hand back the PL title
C'mon Oveh or Ox, time for a change in article?!!!
chew on that result money bags
Please, everyone, ignore this barcode. He's Saltysellers in disguise & only trying to cause us grief. Ignore him, he's as insignificant as his tin pot club.

*without* I mean.
Apparently Fellaini will miss his game against us 'cos of his booking!
without EL next season (unless the unthinkable happens!) we'll be in same position as last season when 5th and we now have a far better squad. Spurs without Sale will be a sad sight to behold next season. can't see Adebayor moving nor I-luv-London Defoe. at least yous can invest the 50m in a new stadium almost as good as our 52k-seater ;-)
Papiss the Meerkat
Like the 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th letters of your username, you certainly do talk it, now 3456 off. Thank you.

If Harry stays up he owes us bigtime! What the hell is going on with Jenas the goal machine?
whats all the hype of loserpool beating us, we giftd them 3 points and now look at them now 2 down
arsenal look so much weaker without welsher, lets hope they drop points in his absence
So jenas Scores again!!!!
Southampton are making a joke of liverpool!!!
Fellaini and Pienaar both suspending against us :)
Bloody Jenas. I really hope Villa come back, do not want QPR to stay up... Just gives the media another to excuse to suck 'arry's dick
rahn DMC
I do feel that we missed a trick with Coutinho... Seemed a steal at 8.5M
rahn DMC
No more prem goals today, please.
Feckin gooners.
2 goals since I said none.
Arsenal 1 nil up. Just 4 points now. Its getting tight.
Tell me about it Fanman - I'm cheering the swans on, here. Not looking good, tho.
Spurs B team doing ok against Villa, tho.
I was watching the gooners for a bit today, they seem to have real quality, but they generally beat the smaller teams.
Why did I ruin my afternoon watching that match?
DocHotspurs, indeed.
0-2, and this is one of their toughest games. Don't panic...yet!
Well, bring on Fulham - time to see what AVB and the lads are made of. Everton, Man Utd and Newcastle are touch fixtures for the Arse. So not time to panic just yet.
Well, lets hope that we can beat Fulham tomorrow to restore the 7 point lead. Walker is a twit.
Arsenal are actually STRONGER without Wishere as he and Santi together in team unbalances it,. today (with Diaby back too) they seem far more balanced and will CONTINUE to be so - bet ur 5h1tiing ur pants now eh. its hapnin AGAIIIIIIN ;-)
