Caulker gets senior England call!

Roy Hodgson has called Steven Caulker into the England squad to face San Marino and Montenegro, in place of Rio Ferdinand.

21 year old Steven, was initially selected for the Under 21 games, however, with the confirmation that Ferdinand has withdrawn from the squad, Caulker was selected and is in contention with Gary Cahill, Chris Smalling and Joleon Lescott for a starting place and though I would assume that Caulker will probably have to be content with a squad place for these games, I honestly don't see any real difference between his ability and the other three. Cahill and Lescott have far greater experience at this time, which perhaps gives them the edge. However with neither Lescott or Smalling playing every week, Caulker may yet get a start, especially if Roy Hodgson chooses to rotate his players and perhaps keep a few fresh for the must win game against Montenegro, who currently top the qualifying group.

Caulker has had an impressive season so far, playing 26 games so far. Though it would appear that the is being managed sensibly by Andre Villas-Boas, as he continues to learn his trade and will probably drop back down to the Under 21's for this summers European Championships in Israel, as Hodgson may look again at Ferdinand, who has stated he still has England ambitions, and Phil Jagielka or Michael Sawson, who are both currently injured.

Despite the withdrawals of Dawson and Aaron Lennon, Spurs still have Caulker, Jermain Defoe, Scott Parker and Kyle Walker, in the senior squad, whilst Tom Carroll, Danny Rose, Adam Smith and Andros Townsend are all in the U-21s to play friendlies against Romania and Austria...

No disrespect to Steven (he's worth a call), but doesn't this call up just show the paucity of quality English players in the Prem?

Spuds-U-Like
Caulker is a massive talent - but I am keen for our players to rest, so even better. He would have played twice for Under 21's - may not play at all for senior squad - no injuries. Also, good for his confidence & Esteem. COYS
Windlespur
At only 21 I think this boy will go on and play many games for England....he's a class player, has a pass, tackle, header and eye for goal...a little more practice at RCB for us and togther with Verts, Kaboul and Daws we're good at CB....
shedboy2
I have rated Caulker very highly for several years, watching him develop from academy and Yeovil etc and he has always stepped up with some ease. In saying that, I do feel that England are struggling at CB, as none of Cahill, Lescott, jagielka etc have convinced me, either individually or in a pair and we still have no one to come close to Terry/Rio etc from the past generation. I can actually see the current senior CBs by[passed after the WC (if not before) by the likes of Smalling, Jones and Caulker, who are bettr all round players in my opinion, though obviously they lack the experience and regular first team football
oxfordspur
Spuds-U-Like - I was thinking a similar thing, only with regards to Parker, Defoe & Walker....LOL

If Defoe is one of the best 4 strikers in England then, I wouldn't bother going to Brazil next year. The sad thing is, he probably is in the top 4. How can England not produce talented strikers????
yiddyboy
Oh dear 5th here we come .Have put the blame fully at Levys door for not buying adequate cover .One right winger at a EPL club ? madness .One right back ? madness .And we saw all season that Adebayor was showing no interest so a striker had to be bought .

levys own stubborness has cost him more .Siggy ,Adebayor were poor poor buys & knowing this in january should have acted .Defoe is Defoe & you don`t have to be a footballing genius to know he`s not the answer to anyones striking problems ,never has been at Spurs & never will be .

IMO & said it at the time ,Spurs should have went all out for Berbatov & ignored Adebayor .We cut off our nose to spite our face .Sugar backed down with Klinsmann & did what was right for Spurs ,Levy should have done the same ,Berbatov clearly preferred staying in England & giving him top dollar ,he`s worth it .Maybe he was already asked but said "NO" ,but i hope we did not miss out because Levy got personal .Berbatov is sheer class ( & Ruiz ) bargain at that price .
big cockeral
big c- not like you to get it wrong but we also have naughton at RB...;)...agree though that without Lennon we are lopsided...
shedboy2
shedboy2 Naughton looks like a fish out of water in a Spurs shirt .For 3 years we`ve been centre mids on the right or left & it never looks right .V.D.V ? Modric ? being great in one position doesn`t mean you can be great in all .
The nearest thing we have is pushing Walker up .We don`t miss Walker or lennon all together ,but the other options are not there .Bale plays bad we play bad ,we`d be 5th now if it wasn`t for his moments of brilliance getting us points we may not have deserved .And by his performance yesterday looked like it`s all gone to his head .
Another `mind the gap ` doormat outside Levys front door ,we never learn .Sometimes hindsight is great ,but was not needed here .
big cockeral
sod spending any money I just want to see us use our academy talent. We have by far the best academy in the country right now and Caulker is just the tip of the iceberg. The only way we're going to get to the top is by trying to compete in a different way to the mega-rich teams around us - ie. not by spending too much. look at tom carroll! lets get him starting now! top player! townsend when he gets back, smith, mason, kane... all quality! good signs for the future!
wiltshirespur
wiltshirespur- trouble with youth is they tend to be in-consistent Carroll looks good but he disappeared for a half earlier in the year, you can't afford to do that in the PL ..we do have some good ones coming through but if that is our model to try and compete with the big boys we'll fall flat on our faces....
shedboy2
Precisely my thinking yiddy mate. I was just a little bit guarded in my original post, but you're spot on.

Spuds-U-Like
Bc- Naughton keeps being swapped wings and not getting a run....we also have smith coming through so I'd save our cash for Striker/winger...but you're right we've been left short...debate who's fault it is Levy/Avb/Arry's/the market/our scouts but fact is we're short and knew we would be....
shedboy2
This England call up is great news for Levy! Caulker's value will have tripled! I mean can you imagine if the mighty Ledley King had not suffered from such terrible injury problems throughout his entire career. Levy would have cashed in on him and sold him to Manchester United 10 years back, along with Berba and Carrick...
pelebro
shedboy2, Who's fault is it that we have no back ups for either Bale or Lennon at the club? And why we have we not had a world class striker since Levy cashed in on Berbatov? Ramos, Harry and now AVB have not been given the funds to buy one. And Berba was not coming back to Spurs in a million years, with loser Levy around...
pelebro
pelebro- I know where this is going...;) I would suggest that the constant is Levy...but I think we have differing ideas on why and what is causing the lack of signings that every man and his dog (including AVb) was calling for in the summer...
shedboy2
Bales injury on Sunday, Townsend's goals for QPR, and Berbatov's brilliantly taken goal, were simply the latest classic 'what goes around, comes around' messages to loser Levy. Of course Levy has his head so deeply buried in his balance the book, used car salesman sand, that he will have learnt nothing. A Leopard never changes it's spots...
pelebro
Put your little dingle away, my little Serbian, you only talk bigoted gob**** which you simply can't substantiate. I'm still waiting for you to realise that repeating the same unprovable rubbish doesn't make it true.

Spuds-U-Like
shedboy2 We should also note that Walker & Lennon were playing when we collapsed last season .Also they were both playing when we were rightfully getting booed off the beginning of this season .
The writing was on the wall & despite never being anti Levy ,posters like Pelebro & frank are entitled to opinion on what they want & in some ways have a point ,speculate to accumulate .
difference between a fact & an opinion is an opinion is neither right or wrong ,just ones view on things .
If people are so right why aren`t they in AVB`s position ?
Foolish to dismiss Levys good work ,but just as equal not realise his faults .Levys arrogance & stubbornness can be an issue ,& millionnaire players far from need our sympathy .
big cockeral
shedboy2, the real problem of course is that scrooge of a triple billionaire owner who has little, or no interest in our club. He's the one who bought Danny boy a a real life fantasy football play thing...
pelebro
There is also no question that Levy is doing too much of the transfers & AVB is the yes boy .
IMO Levy should stick to the business plan & bring in a DOF who can identify the right targets & in the right areas .Despite some turnips Commoli also brought in some peaches.Levy is dictating far too much & for football matters you need a football brain .
big cockeral
it's always levy's fault he's always penny pinching, two bob strikers and we want top 4, do me a favour take bale and Lennon out of the team and look at what we got left over, i am sick of season after season the same old crap at spurs, we say next season we will get champions league, I'm tie of waiting, after 45 years of waiting spurs can't disappoint e anymore, because i won't let it.
164spur
should of said tired of waiting
164spur
BC other than when you speak about Lennon you actually make a lot of sense mate. We could and should have got Berbatov, Levy obviously made no effort. Like you say without Bale we'd be 5th, equally with Berbatov we'd be 2nd.

On Caulker/Rio: £uck Ferdinand he is a total p4ick, should be good experience for Steven as long as he knows England are dog s4ite and doesn't get too excited.
T.H.F.Chris
In January the only strikers of any note who were openly available were Remy(who was more interested in cash) & Gomis. Now why Gomis remained at Lyon is a mystery, maybe their valuation? Unless you're absolutely devastated about not signing Remy on huge wages or paying over the odds for Gomis then quit the whinging! No one was available! What should have happened? Should Joe Lewis have spent HIS money to bring in Cavani or Falcao on 500k p/w? Whatever you earn don't pay your living expenses from here on in, pay my beer tab because I demand it! His money is exactly that, HIS MONEY, not the clubs. If we don't spend the money in our kitty have a moan but don't demand a bloke spend his own personal wealth chasing your dream.
Spurs Allday
In the summer the following have been confirmed by their clubs as "for sale" Eriksen, Gomis, Aubameyang, Mbokani, Alderweirald, Belhanda & I think Negredo too. Now if we fail to sign one of these guys for a reasonable price & reasonable wages in the summer I'd ask why, as most would improve us but stop complaining about not getting blokes who aren't for sale, have no interest in coming & are priced out of our range. Levy can't do $hit about that!
Spurs Allday
Spurs allday- no one was available??? I've heard it all now....
shedboy2
shedboy2 Give me a name. Find me an article where a club say a striker they own, within our price range was available other than the two I've mentioned. Another article where the player states an interest in coming to us would be great too.
Spurs Allday
It has to be a striker that we'd be remotely interested in of course. No youtube legends that play in some obscure foreign league that the club have probably never heard of. While typing I've just remembered Sturridge too but would they sell to us & AVB in particular?
Spurs Allday
Spurs Allday...Llorente?? We could have got in a bidding war with Juve, £18m player.
T.H.F.Chris
He signed a pre-contract with them in January ahead of a free transfer. We were heavily linked, maybe we made an offer but if you're him where would you go? He's not a Spurs fan unfortunately, other than that there's no reason to pick us over Juventus. Like I say they actually have to want to come.
Spurs Allday
It's a sad truth. What are our goals over the next 3 years? What goals do Juventus have in that period of time? There immediate future is far more glorious than ours. We're still rebuilding. Look at the comments Soldado made in the summer about our interest. It shows how far behind we are when a guy would see Valencia as a more attractive option than us. We've been behind the pack for so long the club has almost been forgotten. The Europa is still big across Europe so maybe winning that will help put us back on the map but for the best players we'll still lose out.
Spurs Allday
Lloris & Vertonghen were the right type of signing. We're a step up on top level French or Dutch teams. Trying to sign players from Spain or Italy is pointless. We've not got the respect of their teams & players yet but we'll get there. Look at Damiao, how many times has he said thanks but no thanks while making eyes at Milan, Roma & Juve. We need to get our prestige back & that only comes from winning competitions. We have to start winning trophies at least every other year.
Spurs Allday
Spurs Allday, that's the problem what is our price range. Levy has a problem in the transfer market, he wants to sell £3M players for £8-10M, then tries to buy £20M players for £8-10M and not to compete on wages. Saha was an ideal Levy signing, and Adebayor once Man City agreed to pay half his wages, fulfilled all his dreams. Of course Big C is absolutely right, a graduate in land management with a penchant for "bean counting", would be better employed either digging an allotment, or counting beans, and appointing somebody with half a clue re. football, and the experiance, contacts, and people skills to recognise the nature of our football needs, source, negotiate for and with, and to sign players within a reasonable budget, without pi$$ing off everybody he comes into contact with, or deals with, as our Danny has a talent for doing, bless him, then we might start to move forward in football terms, as well as in terms of Joe Lewis's bank account. Please let's have a competent DOF, quick.
Frank
Re. Steven Caulker, congratulations on the call up, and good luck for progress in both the U21s, and in the unlikely event he gets a game in the seniors. Pity we still see fit to be picking donkey Gallas in front of him at Spurs.
Frank
Of course there are players available, there always are. Where is our Cisse, Michu, Benteki, Ba. There are always players in France, Belgium, Holland, the less fashionable Spanish and Italian clubs who need sourcing, scouting, tapping up, and signing. It's not as if we have to set the bar so high, we just need a couple strikers who can actually score, or even show some interest and look as though they want to score. Is that too much to ask. Even Ryan Rhodes and Adam LeFondre would have been an improvement on the 2 dummies we have ended up with.
Frank
Frank it's the crazy names that get thrown around here. It's not Levy's fault that we can't get Llorente or Falcao or God knows who else. When was the last time we signed a top player from Italy or Spain?(not including cast offs) We as a club don't attract anymore & that's not down to not wanting to spend money it's the loss of our prestige.

Our problems go back to the days of the success we enjoyed when we spent lavishly to the point of near extinction. Sugar bailed us out and stabilized us, Levy & ENIC helped rebuild us. We're there or there abouts is that something to nail them for? Maybe time for new investors but they've come in & put us within spitting distance of our nearest & dearest so there's no need for some of the stick they get. New owners wanted? Maybe yes but at least give credit to those who've done a damn fine job keeping us going. The state we were in before Sugar then ENIC it's a surprise we never fell like others have & both deserve a bit of credit for keeping our club in good nick. Maybe it's just time for a change but some behave like spoilt children.

A good DoF is something I'd like but they have to want the job & Levy has to appoint them, now if he's clueless about football how can he spot a good DoF? Like I say, a little credit...
Spurs Allday
I agree verts and Lloris were excellent buys, I think we are solid everywhere apart from upfront and on the wings, just two players light. Llorente went to Juve because we didn't put the effort in. Yes he may have preferred to go their but he was still Athletico's to sell, had we made a bigger bid than them we might have got him. Problem is Levy never wants to pay above market value but I sometimes you have to. The two players we need aren't going to be cheap, and if we don't pay out we'll never win those trophies.
T.H.F.Chris
Gallas in front of Caulker! Nice one Frank, you see? We CAN agree on some things.

To all the gob$h1tes, back up your claims or shut the feck up please. If you were to justify your view, I wouldn't have a problem with it & you'd get my respect, but you don't, so you won't

Spuds-U-Like
Starting to remind me of a "oasis" song.......i.e...little by little, gave you everything you dreamed of. Back to the topic....and not the Levy in, out...shake it all about saga. Good luck Mr.Caulker....thoroughly merited call up to England. Great progression by the lad.

Best post I've read all day SA, shame you're beating your head against a brick wall mate, you'll never persuade those that are deliberately deaf to reasoned opinions on this. Great credit for trying.

Spuds-U-Like
Frank you're right. We should be better at scouting the Michu's of this world. peterballb & what_sux have thrown many weird & wonderful unknows into the ring. Players we could all complain about us not going for but hell most of us don't even know the guys they're on about ourselves so who are we to criticize? Most just churn out unrealistic "marquee" names & complain if we don't get them.

I, like many, respect your opinion because you are more than happy to go into depth without the need to get stroppy. The scouting/DoF is the only way we can really move forward without new investors unless Levy puts his trust into AVB 100% but I can't see that.
Spurs Allday
The spurs fans...are probably the best scouting team. Many a name has come up on here, especially ...in january. Wiemann of A'Villa....has recently been mentioned. Mirallas of Everton...looks a decent player too. Personnally....i'd try for "Son" of Hamburg first, in the summer. Continue with Bale in a central role, now and next season. Bring back Townsend for next season........and try and lose 2 of 3 (Adebayor,Defoe,Dempsey). Anyones guess who we could replace them with and if they will move...but that is for the summer.
82spursdebut
SA- sorry i couldn't come back earlier....that chap that scored against us at the weekend, he was rather good..what was his name? how about the guy that replaced Sturridge....Ba....the list goes on....and how about finding a statement from our club saying which of our players is available? and what is our budget? is it the 40m we got for selling Luka and VDV? it doesn't work like that...oh and of course there was also the one we were oh so close on.....apparently.
shedboy2
Michu was mentioned to us on two separate occasions, the first time I think he was on a free (recollection) but our 'scouts' weren't interested!
shedboy2
shedboy2 the key part was "interested" would Ba choose us over Chelsea's millions? Be serious. Berbatov? Quality player but 1) that wasn't January 2) would he return? 3) would we want him back?(& I mean playing staff as well as board room. He wasn't a very popular guy by most accounts). Michu wasn't on AVB's radar. He even said that he wasn't aware of Michu. He said you can't know every player sometimes they go under your radar. He was refused by Harry because we had VDV in what Harry deemed to be the same role, much like Suarez(although that was more a Broomfield oversight. No wonder we sacked him! lol).
Spurs Allday
Cheers Spuds-U-Like I get the feeling you've been through this many times before lol. All I'm saying is a little credit where it's due & a little perspective is needed here. We can't sign galacticos & not every wonder buy for 30k is going to be on our radar. We can't keep bashing the manager & chairman for it. No one ever looks at what we did buy. Lloris- French captain & one of the best in the world. Vertonghen- Ajax captain & Dutch league player of the year. Holtby- German U21 captain & one of the most sought after free agents going but anyway screw that we didn't sign Falcao!! :'(
Spurs Allday
I still can't believe we didn't fight City for Aguero. 46mil 250k p/w we could have at least tried...
Spurs Allday
shedboy2 My feelings on this are simple. Of what was realistically available to us. On both our side & the player's are we better off blowing the remaining Modric money on say Remy & his wages in January or waiting till the summer when St Etienne & Aubameyang have made statements that he'll be available? That's of course if Aubameyang is our priority, I'm just using him as an example as I've said there are quite a few names that have been publicly put in the shop window for the summer.
Spurs Allday
so what?
tophobunty
Think AVB would be the first to admit he never would have forseen how dire our so called strike force were going to underperform when he said he was happy with his striking options during JAN xfer window, plenty on here were even saying give ADE a chance he would come right with playing time ,he looks totally disinterested to me,doesn't even produce that stupid bluddy grin when he's kocked up AGAIN.Couldn't control the ball in a phone booth.
sandroman
sa- btw Aubameyang has stated that he does not want to join Spurs over the way we (agent working on our behalf) approached his family...my point is if our strikers are so bad...and we did know (or at least should have) that Ade would be called for the ACN leaving us with 1 striker then surely in the whole world we could have found one better at a price we could afford...
shedboy2
shedboy2 So you're upset that there was no plan in place & that we then while at the mercy of the selling club didn't just pull our pants down in order to get some guy in who may or may not have succeeded? Fair play, it's your opinion & you're entitled to it. I'm not thrilled but I can see sense in why it didn't happen which is why I'm taking stock.

I read that about Aubameyang but I get the feeling that he was being hassled by independent agents trying to broker a deal between him & us. The whole thing as he describes it is totally illegal, yet we've not been done? Strongly doubt that's how we do business. Every agent in England knows we're in the market for a striker so they'll all want a piece of the pie. Why would we send in an agent to work on our behalf? Sounds more like an agent doing a deal telling his parents he'll get their son a move to Spurs. Language barrier may have confused the matter perhaps? We have good relations with St Etienne due to dealings with Commolli & Zokora so I'd be shocked if we'd go behind their backs like that. Can't recall any previous dealings we've had where we've brought in an agent to represent our target.
Spurs Allday
On the whole for "a season of transition" this has been pretty smooth, no? Where's the great loss of form or league status? We're exactly the same as last year which for transition, especially given our manager is clueless, the last guy walked on water & our chairman's a miser is some going. We may (whispering) win a trophy, now how about that!? A positive year of transition!? How many times has that happened? I'm sorry some were ranting please continue...
Spurs Allday
Spurs Allday - available strikers in Jan; Berbatov, Ba, Sturridge, Leandro, Odemwingie, Llasandro, Remy, Negredo. As admitted by our own wonderful leadership - "It was a risk we were willing to take". And for that - they should all be garrotted
mattspurs1982
mattspurs1982 Berbatov was signed by Fulham in the summer, not January. Would they sell him after 6 months? Ba again would he pick us or Chelsea's millions? Leandro we tried for him & got another thanks but no thanks. Sturridge would Chelsea sell to us 7 AVB? Odemwingie not good enough. Remy not worth the wages. Llasandro again probably not good enough. The only one on that list that I'd class as possible was Negredo but then it's how much were his club asking? Was it even realistic?

The "risk we were willing to take" could that be due to us seeing a better deal in the summer maybe? Rather than rush out & pull our pants down over someone we weren't 100% sure on why not wait until we get the right deal for the right ST? That list has strikers of completely different styles, surely we need the right one for our system & style of play? Just because a bangs them in for one club doesn't mean he will for us. We need the right one not just any one.
Spurs Allday
Spurs Allday - why bother even getting out of bed if we dont try!?
mattspurs1982
Is Odemwingie worth getting out of bed for in the first place? Only Leandro & Negredo are real options on that list & we did try for Leandro. The problem there is we seem to be allowing ourselves to be lead on all the time. We should have learned our lesson by now & switched targets.
Spurs Allday
daniel comolli..gave a good Radio conversation during the last transfer window. He said.....it's all about preperation on your targets. Now....he said...the ball needs to be rolling at least 3 days before possible completion. Also....that each target...must also have a back up. I.e.....assuming we wanted a striker, in Jan'......in his words, we should have had a No'1,2 and 3 target.....and had the ball rolling well before possible completion. Frankly !!....we C*cked UP !!!! I think we needed a striker and it was obvious. Obvious, firstly from what we were seeing in our games prior the jan' window...2ndly cos'.....our squad wasn't balanced correctly in that area....3rdly co's..we knew Addy' was going to acn.....4thly....the ages of our strikers leaves a obvious gap....i.e..defoe, Addy', dempsey.....around the 30 age mark. On the plus side....Bale has emerged, to become a competent goalscoring machine. I would like to think we have summer striking targets. The Risk ..is riskier in not doing any striking signings in the summer.
82spursdebut
82spursdebut It does all point to the need for a new DoF to be brought in. There are problems with both identifying & obtaining targets. We need a guy with his fingers in all the pies, someone who AVB can go to & say "I need a striker who can do this, this & that, find him!" Hopefully that would prevent us from having another window of Leandro chasing.
Spurs Allday
spurs allday....if you want my honest opinion. I think Avb and levy approached the last transfer window....unsure of whether they needed a striker or not. I.e...at the start of the window....Avb said he felt ok in that position. But as the month of jan' went on, we stopped scoring and the saga of Addy' continued.....it became obvious that we did require a striker. Think that it became very very clear...after the man.utd and norwich games. Alas.....that was now very late.....and Judging by L'Damaio's...club president words. Spurs / Levy did make a last ditch effort to sign Leandro'......but in the words of the president...........spurs simply did not offer the amount of money they wanted. I think the president said we offered 20mill euro's. At the time......TOO little...TOO late.... I put the blame at both Levy's and avb' doorstep........BUT....Bale has become the saviour, for now......and i think the striking situation will be corrected. As for a DoF...being appointed.....HMMMM...I thinbk Levy likes doing this. BUT....i think it largely depends on what we achieve for the rest of this season....i.e....What happens in the summer will largely depend on what happens for the rest of this season.
