To the End

To the End

We all knew what this was. Crucial does not even begin to cover it. After the heroics at the Bridge it would be so like us to slip up against lesser opposition. This simply could not be allowed to happen. No margin for error, and Stoke away is always such a tough ask. A draw was not an option. This was a match for Spurs fans to dread. Fear not. We did the unexpected. A professional job. We cleared the hurdle.

We gave ourselves a lot to do by conceding early. We're not so good at clean sheets at the minute, which considering centre half is where we apparently have the most strength in depth is puzzling. And worrying. Terrible defending at a set piece (again). Lloris really shouldn't have let that one get by him. But we came back at them and created a few chances. Dempsey scored another crucial goal - does he score any other kind? - in bizarre fashion and it was back on. Brilliant or blind luck? Not sure I really care.

We dominated the second half, helped by the sending off of Charlie Adam. Harsh? Probably. Deserved? For what happened in Blackpool two years ago, undoubtedly. Stoke dropped deep and we had to find a way through. There were chances, we looked capable. We stayed patient, probed and, yet again, we scored late on. Resilience was never a trait traditionally associated with Spurs but yet again we have shown that we simply will not give up. And, for the first time since New Year's Day, we won a match without a goal from Gareth Bale. That's an unbelievable 22 matches. Which can only mean that Adebayor has finally woken up. If he'd started a couple of months ago we may already have made it. It's infuriating to know that the striker we so desperately need has been among us all along. We all knew it really, which is why we've got so hacked off with him. No point worrying about that now. Just perform in the next match. We'll deal with the rest later.

We did what was needed and now find ourselves needing a favour from Wigan at Arsenal. This would not be an entirely selfless act on Wigan's part. They need to win to stay up. Anything else and they are down. A draw suits neither team but it'd us nicely. Should the worst happen and Arsenal win we will be asking a favour of Newcastle. Which, given their terrible form and the comments made by Alan Pardew, is not something a desirable position to be in. Speaking of which, seriously? What manager ever says he doesn't care if they lose 4-0 at home? I digress.

Whatever happens on Tuesday at the Emirates, the fight for Champions' League football cannot be resolved until the last day of the season. Another final day shoot out with Arsenal. 2006 saw some bad mince producing a dose of the squits which is largely held to account for our failure to beat West Ham and qualify. (Point of fact: Arsenal's opponents that day? Wigan Athletic. Spooky...) 2012 saw a catastrophic second half of the season put us in a position that we should never have found ourselves in. Third should've been wrapped up weeks before. It wasn't. We finished fourth and, thanks to Chelsea (and Liverpool) we found ourselves out in the cold again. The only time that rule has ever been put into practice. This season we could make a similar kind of unwanted history if we become the team with the highest ever points tally to finish fifth. It seems likely that someone is going to. Our previous two final day shoot outs with Arsenal have not been successful. Will it be third time lucky?

It's going to the wire. There is now something to play for on the last day of the season on a regular basis. The next step is to have it all sewn up several weeks before. Can't imagine that idea catching on... Whatever happens we have already equalled last season's points tally, so we have at least matched last year's performance. We haven't capitulated when many suggested we would. We've found consistency. It's been a good year. It's just that the competition has been stiffer. It would be so sweet to cap it all by finishing in the top four. On Saturday we did all we could. We will know at 10pm on Tuesday what else is required. Wigan, we saluted your triumph on Saturday. We are praying for another. To quote Ox: COYWA!!!

It seems the last few years has been a constant battle with Arsenal and maybe it’s our year where we finally finish above them. Wigan and Newcastle are no push over’s, but Arsenal seem to have the horrible habit of pulling it out of the bag when they need to. I was thinking about this last night, assuming of course that we beat sunderland, we only need arsenal to DRAW against EITHER Wigan or Newcastle. If these were 2 games in the middle of the season how many of us we think arsenal would waltz in and take 6 points?? It’s a massive game for Wigan tonight, they need 3 points. The talk that Martinez will turn up all guns blazing with a 2-5-3 formation won’t happen. He knows they would get annihilated. I can see a cagey game up until the final 20 where both teams need a goal. I was a bit pessimistic yesterday, but ive woken up on the better side today.

Good article Yorkspur. Yes the competition has been stronger than last year, we have more points than ever in the PL, but nothing is yet decided. The irony of it is, that it wasn't our showings against our rivals for honours that may cost us, we have victories over Man U, Man City, and Arsenal, so have held our own in this company, the "sugar daddy" clubs that everyone moans about. Our nemesis has been the likes of Wigan to whom we dropped 5/6, and Norwich 4/6 and an inexplicable home defeat against Fulham with their abysmal away record. We lack true consistency, a key ingredient for a really successful football club.

Lesser opposition? We cannot underestimate these teams…. This is the Premier League. Against Stoke, it was Bale and Adebayor who were caught napping for the goal imo. If they had stuck to their men and challenged for the ball then Lloris would not have had to pick the ball out of the back of the net. Against Sunderland we have to work harder against these set pieces. Everyone has to put the effort in up and down the pitch or we are just gifting teams. Going forward we have to absolutely batter them and can’t just rely on grabbing a last minute goal. Our stats over the last 5 games are pretty impressive, our shots on goal are always high, possession in their halves favor us…so I’m sure we will work hard give Sunderland a torrid time! This time, a clean sheet and decisive win is the way to finish the season. That would be perfect. The lads seem to have a good spirit about them and we have to be proud with the effort they all are putting in. I for one can wait to cheer them on to the pitch and will give it 100% support until the end. I knew it would go down to the wire. COYBS!!!

I posted this in this mornings other article but I think it its here-c'mon wigan keep believing---points dropped here or there are irrelevant now if your looking at that you must also look at the amount of games we have came from behind or scored late to rescue points this season-if the bigger teams always beat the smaller teams the league would be predictable and boring(QPR 1-0 Chavs)and many other upsets throughout the season thats what makes the BPL one of the best leagues in the world if not the best---anyway I am proud of what we have achieved so far this season with a new manager and next season 3 out of the top 4 will have new managers maybe we can capitalise in that---Well done AVB Spurs finally have a backbone and a fighting spirit something that has been missing for a long time-------COYS---BELIEVE!!!!

Despite Adam's sending off helping us, it infuriated me. He is an idiot. His tackle was a dead cert yellow. Bale was off. There were plenty of other players in a better position to hinder Bale, but for some reason he thought that his slo-mo sliding tackle could dispossess one of the fastest players in the EPL from behind. I do believe that he was going for the ball, but it was so ill-advised given how much cover was available, and the fact that it was around the half-way line! As for Adebayor, AVB should have been playing him earlier. We know that he was capable of terrible performances, but we all know that Defoe will run out of steam. Defoe has an average of 12 EPL goals a season. He is going to end on around that again - despite being one of the top scorers in the opening 4 months. If Ade played earlier, he probably would have got going earlier, and we could have finished more strongly. Too late now. Time for him to see off Sunderland.

We can argue all day about if's, buts and maybe's. Likewise every other club could do the same. The FACT is we are in with a shout of top 4 and it will go down to the last game of the season. Who would have taken that in August?
What we need to look at is the fire power of the squad. We are now competing with the likes of Arsenal/Chelsea for points, only their goal differences are far superior to ours. We don't put teams to the sword like they do. This summer is Levy's time to act, we have caught up with Arsenal, Moyes at Utd is going to feel some pressure. Both Citeh and Chelsea will invest heavily so we need to invest in quality.

Frank - it is not consistency. It is about having a good squad for the whole season. We are running out of steam now, because we had no proper back up for Lennon, Bale, Bae, Defoe. Our squad was not settled when the season kicked off. We played most of season with a RB or CB at LB. It is far from ideal. You just cannot be consistent when playing players out of position for so long. You can wing it for a couple of games, yes, but not whole season. Arsenal and Chelsea have more rounded and stronger squads. Our first XI is more than good enough. Despite you saying that we are not consistent enough, we are still one or two points off where we want to be. This is remarkable, and shows how good our first team is. We just need AVB to get a better level of performance - especially at home, and I will be happy with our progress.

Greavesaboveall - Good shout.
In AVB we have someone who has the tactical knowledge to win/draw games where we normally get hammered. He needs to bring in a couple of his very own signings and we need to learn to convert more chances.

I see QPR are wanting Scotty Parker to bring them straight back up. He can go in the summer if it was my choice. Good servant but shelf-life has arrived!

AVB has made Spurs a different prospect this season. Our rocky start under a new manager was to be expected but he steadied the ship far quicker then Rodgers at Liverpool (who many on here wanted as our nerw manager!) two league defeats since christmas with a patched up squad - slump what slump! The a lack of Kaboul and more so Sandro is tellling by the small number of clean sheets we have amassed. A more considered off season with a detailed knowledge of where AVB wants the squad to be trimmed and or improved should see us get the new season under way in fine style while the top three teams in the league get to grips with new managers and new management styles. Getting signings in early maybe the key as the big spenders look to make statements of intent for their new managers.

Great season.Items to adds in June - new deals for AVB and Bale.Levy to buy a striker. Townsend to provide wing cover. We may end up 5th with highest ever points total, no shame in that. However next season could be golden as we have settled manager and players or more difficult as others spend more than we will to back their new managers. The future may be about to turn lilywhite. I read somewhere that we are on course to reach our record points tally in the league this season; if that is achieved, you have to accept it has been a decent season, regardless of reaching the Champions League or not. I will be frustrated & disappointed if we don't reach it but with the squad so poorly balanced in the majority of our games & Dempsey & Bale having to provide the goal threat that should have been provided by Defoe (had his usual purple patch & is again nowhere to be seen on the scoreboards) & Adebayor (has the ability to be one of the best strikers in the league but to rarely uses it to any helpful effect) it is a job well done to be where we are. We obviously need to move forward & improve but having lost Modric, VDV, King &, essentially, Adebayor we have coped well & can now hopefully bring in a striker & a left back of the required quality (quality is all I'm bothered about, not the reputation of the player) to kick on next season & secure a top four spot. Looking back at our squad from a few seasons ago, it's astonishing to think we had the likes of Bassong, Pienaar, Kranjcar, Corluka, etc. all sitting wasting on the bench. Under the current regime, I cant help but think they would have been used to devastating effect within the squad. Coulda, woulda, shoulda, I suppose.

Tony rich, I posted on an article right at the very beginning of the season that to me it was very clear (easy) how to set the lot up away from home, the challenge was how to do it at home ESP against the "lesser" teams and bus parkers. This I thought and wrote for me was the measure of how good the manager would be. To a very large degree I still feel its about the best method is measuring AVB. On that count, he doesn't look that great, but as he made us harder to beat?

Topho we are definitly harder to beat but changing a deep rooted mental approach by a club can't be achieved over one or two months this will change over seasons. What Spurs still lack is the belief that we HAVE to beat "lesser" teams as opposed to the attitude that we will beat them. Too often we turn up to these games waiting for the opposition to roll over and simply give us the points. If we come up against any kind of resistance we struggle to cope with it. My biggest complaint of the season is the number of games where we have only turned up for a single half. The chelsea game is a good recent example of this. This I feel is AVB's biggest challenge as Spurs manager not signing a world class striker but getting the team to fire on all cylinders for the majority of the game and to grind out results when needed. There are definite signs that the club is moving in that direction but at this stage its a case of alot done but more to do!

Come on Shedboy getting 72 points can not be dismissed so easily. It shows that AVB has improved the team and that we are gathering more points over the course of a season. If that trend were to continue we would start finishing the league even higher up the table. The utter implosion of the last couple of seasons has been avoided this year and hopefully that monkey is off our backs for future seasons. Yes a Champions League place would be the icing on the cake but is by no means a deal breaker this season!

72 points if we win out last game. That will be our highest ever total over 38 games, and only once have we gained more points since the three for a win was adopted in the 80-81 season, being 77 points in 84-85 when it was a 42 game season. So, missing out on CL will be disappointing and unfortunate, but definitely not a failure.

Yidmarks, If things go our way tonight, and then IF things go our way on Sunday, we should ALL fecking swarm over there & send their moderators into meltdown ;)

Spurious - I would be surprised if AVB even allows that in the players diets now mate. with the health & diet specialists he has in his staff, I imagine it'll be nothing but chicken, pasta & a bit of potato.. But feel free to get yourself down to N17 & if you spot anyone within sniffing distance of Lasagne, kick the $hit out of them :)

Nothing new there Guernman. They've scored early plenty of times recently, hopefully Wigan can do what other teams couldn't & have a response for the early set-back... I know it's looking a bit 'men v boys' at the moment, but Wigan will stay patient & hopefully that'll pay dividends!!

Wigan haven't turned up yet, need more pushing forward, this looks like the relegation team turned up not the FA cup winners.
