Part Of The Community?

Part Of The Community?

I have just been reading about a group called Our Tottenham which has a few demands in respect of the new stadium development, these start with the club chipping in £100m for urban renewal, presumably they figure we can just sell Gareth Bale.

They go on to demand that no homes or businesses be demolished for the club's planned 'Wembley Way' style approach from White Hart Lane station, that no public money is used for developments 'related to the stadium' (transport ?) and that at least half of the new homes Spurs builds are for social housing. Levy appears to be trying to be polite to them, my question is why?

Essentially they only want the stadium built under conditions that would bankrupt the club, so what's the point of talking? Just let the council deal with them, they at least seem to grasp the reality of financial situation. I never bought all the talk of Spurs being part of the community when the Olympic Stadium was up for grabs, this is why. Too many people in Tottenham see the club as a cash cow to be taken for every penny they can get.

Jod, completely agree. Do people seriously want the Tottenham area to stay as it is with no regeneration of housing or facilities for local people.

do they have any say in whether the club can actually build the stadium or not? I know sometimes in the UK building plans get scrapped because of the complaints of local residents over spoiling the view etc. Could this group be a spanner in the cog of us getting this built or is it just a local group of people trying to get their own out of the club?

Madness staying in Tottenham .No amount of money will change the mentality of the place

Nice one jod, I was hoping somebody would make an article about this. Would you like me to track down the full story & a bit of info about this bunch of idiots? I can even get details of the guy who's responsible for the creation of this group of nutjobs.

yidinchina - This group was only formed in May, they have NO sway whatsoever.
07/07/2013 11:49:00
DL knows how to deal with this kind of group. Small minds who have no vision and can't see what an extra 20-40k people a week visiting your area brings in economic opportunity. A pity such groups are allowed to exist.
07/07/2013 11:57:00
Here's the full story on what this group is 'demanding'...
07/07/2013 12:01:00
This is the group -
07/07/2013 12:02:00
Now, the 'mouthpiece' of this group, is a man called 'Frank Murray'. "It's worth qualifying Frank Murray's credentials. The mouthpiece of 'Our Tottenham' is a RMT Trade Unionist (think Bob Crow) who features heavily in the likes of the Socialist Worker and TUC literature. He has also previously demanded that France give Haiti £21 billion in some act of reparation for a deal agreed 200 years ago."

Personally I think the club should move out of the area. The complete area is a dump and deprived and the council seem determined to keep it that way - only when Spurs threatened to move did they offer any help in our bid for a new stadium. Relocating either side of the M25 would be a viable option either Enfield or Cheshunt would be great. Not many Spurs supporters come from Tottenham, most I know come from outer London. The transport links to Tottenham at the moment is terrible and on matchday is is much worse - can you imagine how bad it will be with another 25,000 people using public transport or trying to park. I think they're basically Gooners & are trying to cause trouble for the sake of it!!
07/07/2013 12:08:00
tottenhamtony - There is/will be MASSIVE transport improvements.

Para 6.2 -

6.2 Transport for London and Department for Transport have identified the West Anglia line through Tottenham Hale and Northumberland Park as a key priority for investment to expand capacity. The line is running at capacity during peak periods. Enhancement to capacity on the Lea Valley Line serving Tottenham Hale and Northumberland Park is key to regeneration in the ULV. Network Rail and TfL are supporting additional track capacity and platforms initially to allow for a 4 trains per hour local service between Angel Road and Stratford.

The club have already done a deal with the communist state of Haringey, the militant tendency don't get a seat at the table. Best ignore them.

Hey coops there is nothing wrong wit her being left, I'm so far left I've nearly gone full circle however these idiots don't seem to grasp basic economics. They are not grasping what's going on. I love thfc but if I thought it would be detrimental to people I would say but the facts in this case are the club is NOT responsible for the area but it does have responsibilities within the area and I have seen nothing to suggest they aren't being met. Another thing if they are moaning about government funding going to the club why moan at the club, they aren't going to say no, moan at the idiots giving the money away. It always puzzles me why people don't get this scenario, not just in the thfc case but in other areas like immigrants. If someone offers you legal money for nothing you take it, yet people moan about the immigrants when they are doing what anyone would do. It's the system not the people. Told you I was left lol

I can just imagine this click, with their aged suede shoes, sports jackets with leather patches on the elbows, and an unkept beard. They are of the same steriotypical breed as Swampy etc. the type that occupy power stations, and live up trees to protest against the M4 extension etc.etc. somebody from Spurs needs to tell them as impolitely as possible, to go forth and multiply, always assuming they know how to. They are what is known in the trade, as a pain in the srse.

How much are any of this group chipping in themselves?. Or are they part of he "lets get and use other peoples money brigade" Part of the should state must give us a hand out culture. It would be interesting to who they are and what they do!
07/07/2013 13:59:00
Obviously these people don't get that there would likely be no urban renewal happen with the impetus of the new stadium development

No sports franchise should expect a handout from the City unless a City is trying to induce an industry to come to town. Then perhaps. By the same token, no City should expect a sports franchise to do anything more than pay their own way. It's very much two separate business enterprises that must act in a synergistic fashion. That is what's happening. 20k extra fans on game day probably means another 20-25 home gates (at a minimum). Even if every one of those fans spends an extra 5 quid in the area on each date, that represents 2.5M GBP per season. Add to that the taxes, jobs etc that will be created as a result of the NDP and it's pretty easy to assume that the project will easily pay 100M to the local area within the first 20-25 years.

As for this new group and their demands, I'd have no problem matching Haringey pound for pound up to 100M. Haringey can pay us an extra pound and we can pay them an extra pound. That's how ridiculous their proposal is. Public housing is a wonderful idea. That said, taxpaying citizens buying flats and paying their way tends to provide money to the City/Borough that can be used for public housing, if that's what the politicians deem the priority should be. It's all hooey. COYS

peterballb- we're not a franchise!!..;) As for this group...they haven't done anything to fix up 'their' area themselves...if they can't see how to benefit from 54 thousand people coming into the area then they are too lazy or dumb to bother with....
07/07/2013 19:50:00
An argument could be made that we are in fact a franchise of the EPL. We must abide by their rules, use many of their suppliers, get permission to use certain suppliers and are dependant on them for scheduling, games etc. Anyway, argue for argument's sake. We are not the master of our domain. COYS
