Monday 8th July 2013

With the hype surrounding the confirmation this week of our new signing Paulinho from Corinthians and the daily rumours surrounding the many possible targets that we have been linked with.

We heard the announcement last week that today (Monday 8th July 2013) will be the launch date of our new kit and the obvious parade of our Brazilian (no wax included, no pun intended). But is this all?

The new kit is a big thing, its a huge part of club revenue and I am guessing that Under Armour are expecting a show.

I am predicting that we will hear that Gareth Bale has signed a new contract with an increase in his wages to 170,000, Paulinho to be shown off in his new number 8 shirt (sorry Scotty, well not really). But is this going to be enough..

Gareth Bale and Paulinho... we know about them already..

Or is there something that Mr Levy has been hiding...?

Will we see Villa, Benteke or Osvaldo in the Lilywhite colours also...?

What do my fellow Yiddos think....?

Wow, Quite a few early risers. Morning everybody. Villa.. asking price about 8 mil. ....Levy wants to pay like 5 or 6. For the sake of 2 mil. in the grand scheme of things, I reckon just pay them and get it done. Yeah?

Hi to all, sitting here in NZ at 6pm and feeling left out of things, i thought i would put my penny worth in, why are we asking these questions, arnt we already in front of other tansfer windows by a mile, and theres no way we wont bring in a GOALSCORER this time i am sure, so with 5/6 weeks to go sit back and enjoy, COYS

From what I understand, Villa has told Barca he wants to go to Spurs and onlySpurs. This has meant Levy has found he can play his favourite game and try and get a few mil off. Dangerous game though, say Higuan to AFC falls through and they turn their attention to Villa? His head could be turned! Wouldbe good to get him for when the rest of the squad get back into training next week. Spanish teams start their pre season after us, we dont need another unfit striker signing on the last day! Get it done Levy!

Exactly my thoughts Yidmarks. His contribution to the team with goals and experience in being a winner, plus the global branding of him being our player with associated shirt sales. Just do it, do it now, Mr Levy.

Hello, spurs50yrs, my fellow SPURS supporter across the Tasman. I do not want to sound like a pessimist but your 'there's no way we won't bring in a GOALSCORER this time' phrase made me lol. Where have you been since we sold Berba and Keano 5 years ago? Slurs50years, this time last year we'd signed Sig for £11m+ and Verts for £10m+, we've only pulled off Paulinho at the moment, we just seemed to be linked to more players. I think Levy like his own reputation to much. His brickmanship has cost us over the last few years. You expect him to learn but its the way he is, he aint gonma change and start throwing money about if he thjnks he can save a few quid!

Not exactly sure what you mean, 50 yrs. I am still waiting for them to come Down Under and I will fly anywhere in Australia to see them. I would have even contemplated flying to Hong Kong next couple of weeks except I am going on a cruise (again) with my wife next week. As for TV, there's Foxtel pay TV and that's anything from midnight to 3 am as you probably know. Lastly, I've been to WHL a couple of times but never fortunate enough to get there on game day at the right time. Tickets won't be easy to come by but I'm sure there's a way. Yid, we have our new Sainsbury supermarket progressing well also, don't forget that. Could just be that Levy has given us one glug early with Paulinho now he might revert to kind with us all hanging on for last minute deals that may or may not happen and might just keep us in the ratio of 50/50 when it comes to good/average new players incoming. I for one am not overly concerned about haggling over a 32 year old who may or may not be as good as he was and may or may not take to the physical prem. I would like to buy him but he is too old to be part of our mid term future at the very least. I am more concerned with us waiting on someone like Benteke who could be around for a few years and have a profit of 5-15 million when sold on.

Interesting, so we make it common knowledge about our intentions, the story as in the ''current bun'' :- SPURS plan to get Christian Benteke for £20million — by making a raid at the end of the transfer window. Benteke is a major target for Spurs but chairman Daniel Levy will try to get the Belgian star on the cheap. Aston Villa, who signed the striker for £7m, insist they do not want to sell and it would take an offer of more than £30m to tempt them. Levy is happy for the season to start before making his move late in August. Benteke, 22, who scored 23 times last season, is on £20,000 a week and could be offered double that to sign a new Villa deal. Spurs are ready to offload Emmanuel Adebayor in their bid to land Benteke. (END OF ARTICLE) Any deal for Benteke needs to be done before the end of the transfer window, would David Villa and Benteke be an upgrade on Ade & Defoe, i think so, why wait if Aston Villa turn this down we will end up with a loan deal for Fraizer Campbell.

I can't see there being any surprises today although I'd love to be wrong..as for Villa, I can't see what all the fuss is about, he's a bit of fluff, if we don't get him perhaps we should go all in to get Eto'o...who is by far the better player of that generation...;)

shedboy2; like so many, every rumour tell's a different story regarding price for Benteke, lost in translation springs to mind. It's like the young madrid B side player Jese Rodriguez 9.9m, yet reports say we can't agree to pay 8.6m for David Villa and considering the number of players to move on first or second depends again what we read, wait and see i think, is the best policy.

yidmarks, ref Villa that was the situation 2-3 weeks back, so clearly there has been the need for further negotiation, simply has to be Levy not wanting ideally to pay close to 10 million for a 32 year old. Benteke wont be an on the cheap waiting game, too many clubs would sign him, such as Chelsea and Arsenal those two CL offering sides who pay more.

Shedboy re Benteke, I can't imagine Villa would want to sell BUT they are potentially sitting on a big profit AND (apparently) have set themselves a target (end of transfer window) to get an extension signed. We will see Paulinho, and possibly Bale, and that is it. I find it disappointing that having broken the established mould with the signing of Paulinho, early on for the fee required, that Levy seems to be once again reverting to type. We have the haggle over the price for Villa, if we have identified the player as a preferred target, what is £2M in the grand scheme of things, get it paid and get him in. We also read that he is going to play "the waiting game", up until the end of the window if necessary, to try and get Benteke for a knock down price. We have been here before, wasting the window, and then scrambling about in the last 24 hours or less, with the result that we often settle for 2nd best (Dempsey, Rasiak, Frazer Campbell etc.) or miss out all together (Muotinho), and also for the first 3 or 4 games of the season we are under strength, and drop what may prove to be vital points. We all now that all the PL have received the SKY TV windfall, as the level of transfer activity at some clubs already indicates, so come on Mr. Levy if we have identified our targets, lets stop the brinkmanship and get them in. Does Levy really believe that he will be Benteke's only suitor, and that Lambert is sitting by the phone waiting with baited breath for his call, I am sure there will be interest from elsewhere, and Levy must not let his ego get in the way of us improving the squad, by missing out. It's not as if you can skint the club, by spending free money you have never had anyway.

No, Hot, not on a persoanl level. When I was in the RAF, he was a guest of honour & whilst on parade, he reviewed us & started putting blokes on a charge for stupid stuff like long hair, shoes not shiny enough etc., about 4 in all. We all thought the officers or NCOs would let it go, but they didn't & those charged were duly punished. The guy was in his 60's at the time & retired but unfortunately too many officers & NCOs were in awe of him & so he got away with it.

Yes, arrogance is a key factor for all those great war hero's, & he was one no doubt, but he probably felt he still had something to prove even that late in his life. That's what I think looking back with some 40 years of hindsight.

Ken Dagnall, I sincerely hope that we are, and will continue to, "tap up" Benteke. Whether we like it or not, in this day and age it is the standard method of trying to prize a player out of his club. We can have all the principles we like, but it will not do us any good, we simply get left behind. We have suffered from it in the past, it is our turn, if you can't beat em then join em.

Spuds - Thanks for that, interesting experience but I'm surprised he could put people on a charge as he wasn't actually in the RAF at that time. Just because he was an ex, doesn't really give him any authority as a guest, strictly speaking. I actually think ALL the RAF pilots during WW2 were heros, they put their life on the line every day, what makes them heros is that they KNEW they were putting their life on the line. Churchill was spot on with his speech, "Never have so many owed so much to so few".

Hot_Spur, I have heard these stories as well, we have to keep an eye on Atletico de Madrid, not just on Villa, they have also been linked with Benteke, they could essentially have the same shopping list as us, and they will pay more than us. I have no problem with Levy trying to bring the fee down for Villa by a couple of million. He has a business to run and lets face it Villa is 31 and can leave for free at the end of the season.

However, I do have a problem if it goes on and on and on and then we get into a situation where a player misses pre season. I think Levy needs to have a time scale and make sure that if an agreement cannot be done in that time scale then move on because losing a player for pre season or even worse the first couple of games for the season can be more costly than paying an extra couple of million for the player. The points that can be lost through an incomplete team play at the beginning of the season can cost us CL footy and the cost of that is more than a couple of million.

So imo drive to get the player as cheap as possible but have a strict deadline and hopefully a backup in place so we get players fit in pre season and ready to start the first game of the season.

Yidmarks spot on with both of your last posts. Firstly of course we should be completing our transfer business early, to get new players in for pre-season and available for selection for the start of the season, and secondly I too think that Wilfried Bony may well turn out to be the bargain of the window, £12M for a "goal a game striker", irrespective of which league he does it in, and an Ivory Coast international, he has to be cheap, far better value than the likes of Damiao. Swansea have done it before with Michu and Dyer, and I think they have grabbed another gem in Bony.

yiddyboy - 2 million is not a lot of money in football terms this day and age, especially for a player as high profile as David Villa. He will repay that 2 million several times over. See my post above, there are now stories that Athletico Madrid are interested, Levy's p1ssing about over a mere 2 million could end up losing the player.

Not as surprised as we were at the time Hot, I can tell you. I don't know for certain, but above a certain rank, retired officers retain their rank title for life, so maybe that had something to do with it.

As a complete contrast, one fighter ace I did actually meet was Archie Winskill DFC when he was Captain of the Queen's Flight during my time at RAF Benson. Not as great as Bader, but completely opposite in character, a really, really nice bloke, you might have seen him on one those Battle of Britain documentaries on Discovery. Kind of proves the point of arrogance being a factor in greatness, Archie was not a great ace, but a really great guy.

I wouldn't have minded Benteke but no more than 10mil.

As for the kit bale alone is a huge statement of intent add Paulinho and we have other big players in Lloris, Vertonghen and Sandro and we have long serving players in Lennon and Dawson. I cannot see the problem.

Of course as fans we want more players in to show of the kit but we don't throw money around for the sake of it. I agree with yiddyboy - 2mil is a lot of money to save or to blow but as i said in earlier post there is also the danger that more money can be lost through letting trnasfers drag on and on.

Newspapers leading our emotions again. Wow, imagine a reporter actually saying that DL plans to leave the Benteke bid (if there is even one coming) to the end of the TW! Wow! And some on here believe that has legs! Wow!

Frank I agree we have to conclude our major purchases early. I also believe that it is Baldini who is handling our TW negotiations and not DL. Levy will have given him a budget and he is working with that. There are a number of solid Strikers we can go after that wouldn't break the bank. I'm expecting things to be done by 21/7. This may sound a bit stupid but surely if this is the first day players have been back to training, they will get their morning session out of the way, get showered then take the photos in the new strips? Apart from one or 2 players (Paulinho perhaps) I can’t imagine that this will have been done before they went away?? That been said I reckon the launch will be this afternoon earliest. I wish I could share your enthusiasm and trust that we will get the players we need, and have then in by 21/7, I have been a fan long enough to have had the annual disappointment, particularly during the last 14 years, of us fiddling whilst Rome burns, and often either missing out completely, or often settling for second best.
