'If It's Football, It's Vital'

New week, New Nonsense.

New week, New Nonsense.

Hi everybody, I hope you all had a lovely weekend & enjoyed the blisteringly hot weather, the excellent result by the British Lions Rugby lads and, of course, Andy Murray remaining British via winning the Wimbledon title, rather than becoming Scottish via losing it :) (Could this be the year someone wins Sports Personality of Year without actually having one?).. The first winner since 1936, 77 years ago, is what happened yesterday, nice!! Ironically 'Spuds-U-Like' remembers Fred Perry winning it back in 1936, just like it was yesterday ;).

Let's start with some info which seems to have been gathering a bit of pace over the last 2 or 3 days, though I never mentioned it on here because I never thought anything of it. Anyway, this is the latest info...

GARDS - 'Nacer Chadli must have legs! Can confirm he has been to our training ground as well a! s another player who would be tougher to get!'..

Anyone know anything about this lad? A quick Google search tells me he is a 23 year old winger, Belgian, 6ft 2' tall, plays for FC Twente & has a goal ratio of about 1 in 4. So if anyone has seen the lad play, I'm sure we'd all appreciate a little info!! On other platforms for info, it seems he's full of pace, has a trick or two up his sleeve & would, potentially, play on the left of a front 3, like Varela did for AVB at Porto BUT is equally comfortable on the right. People seem genuinely excited by this info!!

As for 'the other player' mentioned within GARDS info, Gards has said the mystery player's club may not know about his visit, so it probably isn't one of Chadli's friends from Twente. Should we be concerned that we have players looking at our facilities without the knowledge of their club? I doubt we're in the habit of showing any old so & so around our training facilities? GARDS said he is not talki! ng about David Villa, but thinks this is closer to happening & he won't mention the name as the deal is miles away from happening BUT has confirmed that he is a striker. This will get tophobunty VERY because many other people are thinking that the mystery person could well be Benteke, due to the fact that he (the mystery player) was shown around at the same time as Chadli, yet isn't from FC Twente but would be someone that Chadli knows, otherwise there'd b no point in showing the 2 players around together, they'd be shown around individually.

JJetset the appeared to answer somebody who said, 'how would we get away with showing Benteke around our training ground'... JJetset said, 'Well we showed numerous players around last season that didnt come to fruition including Willian, so don't go too excited about us showing Benteke around ;)'...

For me, it's all about the ' ;) ' at the end of JJ's response, he does like to tease & that really 'could' mean something. However, lorry loads of salt etc etc!! Oh and according to B! enteke's twitter account, he was in London yesterday, along with De Bruyne & Lukaku, nice coincidence for the optimistic there :)

Other news sees 'Corriere dello Sport' saying we have contacted Man Utd about Nani, personally I hope not, but each to their own!!

Our own pres seems to think we've agreed everything with David Villa, with the fee to be agreed between the clubs.

That should do for now, we can chat about more as it comes through. I'd just like to say a big THANK YOU to 'tophobunty' who, over the last week or so, has really 'toned it down' and discussed everyone's opinions with great respect & equal measures of knowledge. This place has been MUCH better for it, so I for one appreciate his effort greatly. Thanks tophob ;)..

After meeting a gorgeous blonde last night, I took her home and had sex with her. After we finished she said that I was crap in bed. A bit harsh really, how the heck does she know after 20 seconds?

Let's.... Chat.... Nonsense!!

What was it I said last week about bitch slapping? You fecking little whippersnapper!!!! LMFAO!

What most VSer's don't know is that Coopsieyid is really a 5 year old computer geek copying & pasting everything he posts. Good at it isn't he?

Well, this IS a nonsense article.

At least Defoe/Dawson/Friedel and more importantly Bale modeling the kits will kill off some rumours...anyone know if they going to do that squad photo like did last year with the Beast Sandro in the back roaring?
JattYid
Really hope we tie Villa up soon enough, need him to join before we set off on pre season. British and Irish Lions Mr Coops. ;-)
ledgespur
JattYid - I am not sure so many people think that a photo shoot modelling the new kit is equivalent to a legally-binding contract that you cannot leave this season. In the event that they leave, they can easily photoshop the new kit over someone else and use that.
TonyRich
It is a fairly reliable indicator though tony. Not 100% but fairly
jljyid
New Kit, shirt, shorts and socks, some call stockings, but hey no suspenders, sod the kit, it's the team we put out in it that Juan Mata's, is that not right John? Levy get this deal for Villa sorted, David Villa that is, we have waited long enough for a striker, please.
spu 4 life
TonyRich pretty sure a player wanting to leave or a player the club wanting to sell would not really partake in the clubs shirt fotoshoot...From what i remember BAE was at the forefront in last years pics reckon he may well not be in the plans this year
JattYid
David Villa has signed for Atl Madrid. Damn!....
papsy
new kit photo, one show's Dawson looking to his left, Brad and Defoe in the middle; caption reads ''bloody hell you two still here''
spu 4 life
If this Villa signing for Madrid rumour is true i am deleting every ITK tw*t on twitter facking killed my mood facking ****s
JattYid
Is Paulinho really signing. I know the website says he has and everything but only seen him holding a scarf and not the shirt. Im worried. Plus Villa has just signed for A Madrid :(
Yid
David Villa; says who?
spu 4 life
So much for David Villa, but never mind levy hasn't only saved his £2m he has saved all £8.6, the guy has certainly got the knack. Back to the drawing board, what phantom striker do we fancy now, bugger it, and we missed Grant Holt he has just gone to Wigan yesterday, and Charlie Austin going to Hull. Either of them would have been cheap.
Frank
It's here too:

Guess we'll never know now, could've been massive for us - or another Bobby Zamora. Don't know whether to feel glum or relieved if this is true.

All this Villa talk is about the club Aston Villa not the player. We will get the striker signing everyone wants, Bent!!

4.4m villa deal done to ath madrid, what a joke

Well coops what have I been saying for the last bloody week !!! Levy's done it YET AGAIN it seems.

Hmmmm..no.. Villa, Austin, Damiao, Kone, Aubemeyang, lewandowski, Gomez, Bony.........the list of possibles is getting shorter...but Money still talks.

4.5mil for villa is the rumour. Wtf levy
jljyid
Back to Leandro then! :(
Critical_Spur
So that leaves us with who; The White Hart Lane club are understood to have offered around £17million for 28-year-old Soldado, Benteke two strikers 45m, (unt see levy paying that?
spu 4 life
Andre's - Oh you mean you have inside information that all the reports are wrong?
Hot_Spur
Ok now AM have Villa (dodged a bullet there imo) we need to table a bold bid for Diego Costa...
shedboy2
Whoa Whoa Whoa…… How the hell has that happened!! Villa to Athletico confirmed for 5.1m euros. Just waiting for Villa to agree terms etc……..errrrrrrr what the F has just happened! Bit of a coincidence that the day Gomez joins Fiorentina Villa joins (potentially) Madrid.
hudderspur
hot_spur,famous last words....question is did levy really want villa?,i somehow doubt it.....on to the younger ones levy is more willing to buy....who?...thanks for the infos and article coops
rovinella62spurs
I'm certain once again levy will pull that little rabbit out of the hat, just hope the little fluffy phucker can score goals, over to you pelebro, slag him off.
spu 4 life
Jackson martinez it is then ;)
Cider spurs
All the "spurs will spend big this summer" or "AVB and Gareth Bale to be convinced to stay by squad strengthening," talk. What everybody forgets, is that Leopards don't change their spots, and Levy certainly doesn't. We will end up on the 1st Sept with Paulinho and some cheapie striker that Baldini can find us somewhere and that will be that. If we didn't really want to give it a go for Villa why waste a fortnight or more whilst other players are changing hands. The adage of "running a pi$$ up in a brewery" comes readily to mind. It's just a joke the way we prat about.
Frank
New Kit, Villa signs for Ath Madrid, turned out nice again.
spu 4 life
4 6 0 system looking favourite now. LOL
Cider spurs
Cider spurs the way it's going we will end up with Janet Jackson and a bottle of martini......
spu 4 life
If the £4.5M price to Ath Madrid is true, then Levy wants gelding between two Armitage bricks (it only hurts if you get your thumbs in the way).
Frank
When Paulinho said to Corinthians see you soon, Levy plans to sell Bale for 85m and Paulinho back to brazil for 30m, clever phucker that levy..
spu 4 life
Spu I think we will end up buying the Michael Jackson statue from fulham, it's an upgrade because atleast we will have someone in the box when the crosses come in a and it will be offside less than JD
jljyid
Paulinho is a top signing...the sort of calibre we need. We wouldn't have brought in Baldini to do dick all...wouldn't be surprised to see one of the Roma players come as he'll know their contracts inside out...Osvaldo or pref. Lamela?....front 3- Bale, Costa, Lamela....all switching play..if carlsberg did forward 3's...;)
shedboy2
spu...Now thats a night to remember! Will she take her shirt of if she scores.(Phuck it,stick her down for penalty duties)
Cider spurs
It doesn't need Pelebro this time. Anybody not criticising Levy over this one must be doing him sexual favours, even by his imperious standards of miss placed brinkmanship, this is an absolute belter. You couldn't make it up. By the way are Louis Saha or Gregor Rasiak busy, better give em a ring.
Frank
Not keen on the colours of the kit

Coops..Ref blame game...Well said!.
Cider spurs
Bc- you could be right re:poker...and Villa WAS different gravy not sure IS anymore...especially come year 2, 3 etc of his contract...never played club footy outside Spain and doesn't do it against the big teams in internationals...I won't lose any sleep if we miss out on this one...BUT we still need to upgrade our forward line.
shedboy2
I haven't seen confirmation of Villa being a done deal with any club.
thfan
Why on earth would Barca accept that though..? Clearly there is no way we have offered 8mil or any where near that in fact because the deal would already be done now. We've just missed out on a worldy quibbling over pennies it seems. Proper angry!!

Coops I can only just see my laptop for spitting feathers, forget that one it will get shafted by Jose at chelski.
spu 4 life
Coopsie, so are you saying its all in the plan, it's a bluff, and Villa will come to us. The point is if Levy had pulled fffing finger out for once we would have had him before AM got involved, but as usual he has to play clever buggers, it's why he is so loved in the game.
Frank
Now you're being plain stupid Frank, sorry mate, but you are. Why would a nearly 32 year old who's played his entire career in Spain come to an English side competing in the Europa when he can stay at home & play CL? I'm disappointed, but I can see why this hasn't come off & it probably has feck all to do with Levy. The player has chosen AM over us, simples.

Spuds-U-Like
confirmed on ssn Villa to Athletico Madrid, another one bites the dust.
CanUkSpur
let's get Fellaini as well, i don't mind going all the way Belgium ;D

SanchezSpur, our offer was actually 3 books of Green Shield Stamps, that's what pi$$ed Barca off, when they realised they are now obsolete and you can't cash em any more.
Frank
GO TO THE LINK; http://cricfree.tv/sky-sports-news-live-stream.php Parkinson was just doing the over 50's plan, Levy has someone lined up then..
spu 4 life
coops- I'd take Jese Rodriguez (price seems high though for a b player)or alvaro morata from RM....I guess people are skeptical on RM links given the Bale situation...
shedboy2
It's on the Barca website now... but if we do act quick and offer better wages you never know... may be able to persuade him... can't see Athletico offering less than us though unfortunately. What a taint to an otherwise lovely day!
SanchezSpur
Frank the only reason you think they're sitting there pratting about is because you are a miserable sod who believes everything in the paper! They probably had a few chats with Villa, as well as a few others. Villa goes to AM we carry on chatting to the others! Some people don't have the intelligence to cope with a transfer window - remember when football used to be fun??
Dan Mac
You're talking far to much sense spuds, hell of a lot easier to blame it all on levy
MatJspur
OMG - why are people believing this story of Villa just because it says so running across ssn TV. Until it is actually confirmed that the deal is done by Villa himself or AM then it is just yet more stories.
thfan
Yes I saw the Villa to Athletico, but in Levy's defence the fee was EURO 5m, we were quoted £8.6m that's double. No wonder Levy wouldn't agree.
Chelmspur
Just heard Villa's gone to Atletico for 4.4m. Either the rumours he was on his way to WHL were ****e or he wanted to stay in Spain. If the fee is true it is half of what we were apparently going to pay so it can't be that! Be honest we never heard anything from him or Spurs about it did we? Are we upset? I have to assume that AVB etc have other plans. I cannot believe there is a possibility that we'll start the new season with the same pair of muppets up front! Help me out here guys, I need good news.
GreavesIsGod
I for one am glad Levy didn't spend the 8.5million we were apprently quoted when a spanish club could purchase for half that amount. This may have as much to do with the player himself as anyone else. I'm not completely broken up by the fact that Villa hasn't signed for us as I never really saw how he fitted into our normal trasnfer dealings signing young talented players with high potential sell on! I also think Spurs have once again been used to force others into making a deal. Gues we'll have to settle for Higuain so...
Slurms McKenzie
I can see both Franks and Coops points here... yes Villa is obviously staying in Spain for personal reasons and no that isn't Levy's fault. But if we'd offered the right money first up without going back and forth with "ridiculous" offers then we'd have had all this sorted and he'd be ours now... This IS levy's fault I would say. I'd love to know what this ridiculous offer actually was. Barca clearly would have accepted an offer of the level of AM's so 2mil up front.. So Levy has essentially offered less than this by some distance for DAVID PHUCKING VILLA!! AGGGGHHHHHH!!
SanchezSpur
More of an AM from what I have seen coops. Or more like Ronaldo position wise
jljyid
another one bites the dust.
topspur53
Did we actually get confirmation that Villa did actually agree terms with us - No not that I can see. Everything surrounding Villa has been speculation neither Villa or Tottenham have directly said terms were agree but stumbling block was the transfer fee.

Personally I feel we don't know how close this deal was nor do we really know what is happening now. Just need to be patient.
thfan
Irrespective of the reasons Villa "chose" Ath Madrid, if in fact that is the case, we have wasted a bloody fortnight or more, with pre=season looming, when we could and should have been looking elsewhere at Gomez, Bony, and others or concentrating on somebody we can get. We knew Villa was Spanish, that we weren't in the CL etc. etc. none of that is a secret. Never mind when the window closes that's not important, what is, is to get any new players in, blooded, fit, and ready for selection for the first game of the season not the bloody 4th or 5th one. We should learn our lessons from previous seasons, but we don't. It's funny how other clubs seem to understand this, get em in, get em ready, whilst we just navel gaze until the last knockings, looking for bargains.
Frank
Just for those who haven't seen the article.... http://www.fcbarcelona.com/football/first-team/detail/article/club-reach-deal-in-principal-to-sell-david-villa-to-atletico-madrid
SanchezSpur
Deulofeu is regarded as one of the hottest prospects in the Spanish game and the two Premier League sides are believed to be just two of many European sides on his trail. The player's tendency to cut inside from the right hand side of the pitch and threaten the opposition goal has drawn comparisions with fellow Barcelona striker David Villa. .......could this deulofeu be who levy really wants from barca.......and are we looking to get top b players from barca and madrid
rovinella62spurs
So on Barcelonas site it stats deal has been done in principle which is not a conclusive done deal.

Why in principle. If the fee has been agreed it can only mean either personal terms may still need to be ironed out or it is subject to medical. I feel the latter is often stated so wouldn't it say 'Villa to AM pending medical'. But to state in principle suggests that the man himself hasn't agreed yet. May be he is weighing up his options.
thfan
I'm kind of with frank on this one, perhaps not as annoyed but we have in the past messed around when it's clear that we need a striker and it's cost us, nows the chance to sort that and it's not been done. I know what people are saying that the window has just opened but we have known for 5 FIVE years. Last minute deals are not the answer to settled team that we all want to push for honors
jljyid
soldado worth the money and ideal number 9
spu 4 life
No win situation for Levy.Loads of people slate the bloke when £16 odd million spunked up wall on Bentley and other signings that don't work out. When the guy shows a bit of caution in signing an almost 32 year old striker he's classed as a muppet for not offering what some people deem enough. Not forgetting the obvious if Villa REALLY wanted to come we WOULD have signed him by demonstrating the ancient art of negotiation (we would have upped our bid a little, they lower their value and we meet somewhere in the middle)If players truly want to come then if the club feels them worthy then this is how it goes.We could just throw money at everything, pay over the odds, but I don't fancy away games at Fratton park or Elland road for that matter.
Cider spurs
David Villa was a smoke screen; 6 days ago - Tottenham seem to be on the verge of signing a Spanish striker, but could it perhaps be Roberto Soldado and not David Villa?
spu 4 life
Slurms, yes the ideal is to sign a young player with a future sell on value. But it is a striker we are looking for (allegedly) and the key factor is can he score goals, has he scored goals, has he got a striker's mentality and intelligence, all these things are more important as Raul, Van Nistleroy, Henry have all proved after moves late in their careers, than how old they are. Strikers win games, can soon pay back transfer fees. Goal scorers are goal scorers no matter where they have done it, how long they have done it for, or how old they are, good ones are as rare as rocking horse *****e, and Villa is a good one.
Frank
So coopsie this may be scum journo fanatasy or maybe barca putting the squeeze on Levy?

Has anyone considered that the Villa deal may have been thwarted by Baldini?
I believe that he came in after "our" interest in the player. Maybe he is not too keen.
miamispur
C.S.W.Y we have years of experience in this so to tell us what we don't know is hugely patronizing. We know what the club needs and that's a striker not some last minute Campbell
jljyid
I think the only thing we can be critical of Mr.Levy at this moment, is that he bought a midielder this summer, first. I think he tearing his hair or baldinis' hair out, as we speak, for a striker.
82spursdebut
I don't know who does the call making and the decision making, but I presume Baldini is the one with the budget, so surely he is involved. It may have nothing to do with Levy at all. Fact is, CL was always going to have an allure. He is also just games away from a bunch of records in Spain. I thought it all looked like it was in place but it would also not be the first time a player has used Spurs to get their real target to get the lead out. Shame, but that's the way it goes. There are other targets. I do like the idea of Nani and the word from Roma is that the wages were fairly modest. I still believe Rebic and Castaignos should be considered. We do need an out and out striker though. Oh well, next!!!!! Dzagoev and Doumbia for me. COYS
peterballb
A bit dissapointed with Villa, it looks the truth that he will go there, but to blame Levy is just beyond a dumb brain sparking it's final cell. Villa's choice, I am sure we would have agreed a fee with Barca, the issue clearly is the player, IMO.

We all need to chill the fack out, we will get a striker and I 100% know/believe we will break our transfer record for him......it will happen.....

Thank You, Bitter Ledge.

Pre-season started today. Yippee! New kits were unveiled (still undecided but hey-ho) and David Villa has decided to stay in Spain. Shame. So pre-season has started and we still have no new strikers signed. We've been forewarned however that Levy will leave it to the last minute to snap up Benteke. No doubt we'll just miss out again and stick with Ade and JD. Bale will be delighted.
SpuriousLife
I used itv text big c. I always found it had more crap on it and everyone loves the tabloid crap at transfer time
jljyid
Seems we didn't miss out. Rather he chose another destination. Short of offering ridiculous wages and term, it was not to be. Levy doesn't do that (thankfully) so he went to a CL club in a two team league (he will play for neither) and will not have to change countries. Let's get something done so that we can move on with a strike in tow. COYS
peterballb
Maybe its us that's pulled out at the last minute because another deal has presented itself and Levy feels its the better deal. Behind the scenes I'm sure there's a lot of smoke and mirrors when negotiating and we've maybe got the go ahead for another one of our targets! I'm hoping!
Jantheman
Not gutted about Villa. Am a little irate though that Mario Gomez is going to Fiorentina. Quote from BBC Website "Fiorentina finished fourth in Serie A last season to qualify for the play-off round of the Europa League". Second quote "the Italian club will pay up to £17.2m". Give me strength !!!

C.S.W.Y
I hate Levy as much as the next Frank, but in this instance I can't see why he is being blamed. In the first place we have the great Baldini to sort out transfers and in the second place I would guess that Villa's priority is to play for Spain in the next World Cup. His best shot at that is to stay in Spain under the nose of the cheerful Spanish manager and play against teams he knows inside out rather than come to the PL and risk "out of sight, out of mind" and the possibility of not being good enough. I am disappointed though with the apparent lack of alternatives being mentioned but then no-one knows what the great Baldini is up to do we?
Harry-Kari
Muttley - you make a brilliant point about Gomez. He's gone to bloody Fiorentina who are nowhere near our level. I'd be surprised if Gomez felt Fiorentina were a better proposition than us. The only reason can be that we weren't interested, which begs the question, why? I really hope we have something excellent lined up. Another season with the Adebayor and Defoe we had last season and we will miss out on CL football yet again.
SpuriousLife
Who the hell is Carlos Bacca????
ledgespur
Soldado is 28
muttley
Coops - it appears we've made it quite clearly known that we want Benteke and that we are ready to wait until the very last minute of the transfer window to do the deal. That is my problem with it. It may well save us some money IF it comes off at the last minute. However our recent record shows we normally 'just miss out with our last minute bids' and we will have already played 3 league games by then. 9 points at risk to hold out for a slightly cheaper deal is a risk that has backfired on us more than once. The equation doesn't really balance out: save £5m on Benteke and miss out on CL football (again) at a cost of £50m per season to the club. I really think we need to stop playing brinkmanship late in August.
SpuriousLife
Reading that Villa's is for a fee about €5.1. but it did not happen, so let's move on. I said in a previous post that Atlético de Madrid would have a similar shopping list to us regarding strikers. To look on the positive side now they have got Villa replacing Falco, providing they are not planning to buy another striker then, that gives us a better chance regarding Soldado, Negrado and Benteke, if we are interested. So Atlético de Madrid: finished Striker shopping (we hope) Arsenal: are interested in Higuain & Suarez (which we are not ?) This gives us a little less competition for the type of striker we are looking for. But, we have to be careful of Dortmund and see what happens with Lewandowski. He might be at Dortmund for another year? We need to be aware of our competitors in the Transfer Market. If Lewandowski leaves Dortmund could target Benteke for example. If there not after someone on our list, then why not, who are they after and should they be on our list?
SpurInSpain
CSWY. You can say what you like just don't expect not to be called up on it.

Would have liked to see him in a Spurs shirt but Que Sera Sera! Not blaming Baldini/Levy because they seemed to call it right. Barca was basically looking for a patsy to pay them 8.5M GBP and they end up going for a 2+2+1 deal. Hope Baldini has someone coming soon as I'm with Frank on this, we need to get our strikers in NOW.
jvd
As Frank mentioned in the previous article. Brenden Rodgers has been good in the Transfer Market and we need to be better, the scouting does worry me I have to say, sometimes we do good but we need to be much quicker off the mark. I hope Franco will sort this out. Now we are linked with Jese
SpurInSpain
We also have to be VERY mindful of how AVB sees this. If he sees it as Levy messing about, trying to get the best price we will lose AVB next summer.

Benteke, Osvaldo, Soldado, Doumbia, Leandro, Costa, Lamela, Higuan, Deulofeu, Rodriguez....

Let me just say I'm not annoyed we haven't signed villa its the perception that once again we are messing around instead of getting a prolific striker in. Villa look like we was breaking that perception and then he goes to a.madrid.

Relax lets have faith in the team at WHL. Levy, AVB and Baldini I am sure will bring us what we need to compete next season. believe nothing what the papers or news says until it comes form the true source.

I have faith we will get at least one striker and in all honesty if its a good one then I would be happy to give the others another season. lets face it non of them can do any worse and maybe just maybe a bit of competition for them all with a new first choice striker may kick the others into shape.

We will not have another season without a new striker so relax it will happen and I see another player come in or may be two.

Chadli would be a good fit for us and with the news That Barca have agreed a fee with Atletico Madrid, I hope the mystery player is a striker.
canadianspur
I see Frank is showing off his brains again. I think the longer this dragged on the less likely we were going to get Villa. The logical explanation is that Villa never really wanted to come to Spurs. Anything more than say 8m plus Villas wages seems way to much. None of the major clubs were in for him so we may have dodged a bullet anyway. I am sure we are worked hard to bring in the right strikers and i am confident we will. Hopefully Benteke.
asherthesmasher
Yidmarks, I know shedboy2 is a big fan of Diego Costa, and rightly so. Atlético, interesting have signed another striker this week, Léo Baptistão, another up-front player. The question is, in place of or as well as Diego Costa. I think Costa could be fabulous for us but I don't think we are in for him, additionally, we are talkin' big money.

I still think one of Soldado,Osvaldo or Negredo will happen. Benteke appears to maybe want a move.Think there will be plenty of suitors if this is the case.Maybe that is why it is being reported that we'll go in for him late in the window in the hope that teams around us in the prem have already secured their striking talent leaving us a clear shot at him.We often do the donkey work only to be blown out of the water by the big spenders. If they want him let them do the donkey work this time round if we choose to get involved we can let our intentions be known at this point
Cider spurs
Am I correct in thinking that regardless of what figure any club bids for Damiao that we have the right to match it?.I don't really understand this arrangement if this is the case because surely any club can match anothers bid in any case regardless of an agreement. Is It that the actual fee bid from another club would have to be disclosed to us?. How does it, work does anybody know?.
Cider spurs
Cider spurs, good question, if Gene Hackman (AKA Scolari) is going to watch any football next year in the EPL, it will be Totteham v Chelsea, so if Damião wants to play in the world cup, Tottenham is the place to be seen in England!
SpurInSpain
BigC, given the number of fans, not just of Spurs, but also of other EPL teams, they always seem shocked that players choose other leagues, I would suggest I am not far off. The problem with the entire English game is arrogance.

The rest I agree with. It is the best paid televised league because there is that level of parity. Still fans do seem surprised when players go elsewhere when it is not just a case of greed. Some players are just happier playing elsewhere. COYS
peterballb
SpurInSpain-Not saying I want him(not at prices being mooted) Just wondered what the arrangement was regarding matching bids.
Cider spurs
Cider spurs, that I can't say for sure, but someone on here should an answer
SpurInSpain
Cider, it doesn't really matter if we have the rigt to match. You still need the player to want to come. If leandro does not want to come to England, it matters not that we have the right to match. I really believe that if Leandro was to come, it was last window.

As for Dzagoev, he can play anywhere across the top, as can Doumbia. Dzagoev is more akin to Bale than an out and out striker, but in a 4-3-3, does that really matter? What we need are options of quality. He is much more of a shooter than Lennon and is head and shoulders better than Townsed and is much better suited to 4-3-3 than Defoe ever will be. COYS
peterballb
Thank you Peter I thought he would be capable it was just the fact he is labelled as AM.That said what do we now class Bale as ? Agree Damiao could have arrived by now if he so desired.
Cider spurs
What's with the blind panic just because a 32 year took the soft option and stayed in his home country rather than come to ours? Personally, I think it's great news that we found out on 8 Jul rather than in the middle / end of August. I say we stick to our strategy of quality over quantity and focus on the right buys. Paulinho is a great example of that. Villa wasn't.
muttley
I'm not keen on the blue logo HP on the front if the white shirt.
thfan
thfan, agreed, the logo is too prominent, a mistake. Our marketing strategies are one of our weak points.
SpurInSpain
I know today saw Bale in the new kit but maybe misguided optimism made me think that we would actually hear a statement to the effect that he has penned a new improved contract.Especially as some ITK s stating that Spurs knew Villa was heading to Ath' Madrid yesterday.Don't think it would have taken anything away from kit launch, just would have stopped the Euphoric feeling us Spurs fans were feeling this morning turning into the damp squib as the day progressed.Could have put the feel good factor in Spurs for the day.Make possible targets hear the Spurs name across media outlets. We could have really pushed our club into the limelight today, however I feel this has been an oppurtunity missed and has left me wondering why.
Cider spurs
I think people are misunderstanding why some people are annoyed with whoever is dealing with the transfers here (it may not be Levy - but I reckon it is). We've spent too long messing about with Villa when it seems that he never wanted to come to us anyway! Why was this great big issue not identified a few weeks back? If it was we could've stopped wasting our time and put our energies into more realistic targets. Is that a fair comment? That's been our problem for a few seasons - we also minced about with Forlan, Rossi and Cavani in the past. Damiao has taken about 37 years and we're still not anywhere near that. To Dare is to Do and all that. If these players are unattainable maybe we should realise who we are and go for a Darren Bent, Kone or an Andy Carroll. It's either get serious or settle for these types of striker. Yeah, they may not be the star names we all want but the star names are either too expensive or want CL football. It's ironic as had we of bought this striker we desperately need in Jan or last summer we'd have finished in the top four. I actually like Levy but lets be honest here - someone is screwing up on the striker front and have been for about 3 years. It may be early July but lets not act like this problem hasn't been festering for a long long time.
JPspurs
I see the argument from all sides...At times if you need something enough you just have to bow down and pay the money.Only issue should be what grade of product you want and how much you are willing to spend to acquire the product. At times Danny boy tries to buy top range product for mid range money, this obviously at times can be frustrating and at times results in no purchase. On this occasion tho' I think a fair price was offered but Villa chose to continue to ply his trade in his homeland with the added bonus of champs league.Lets not forget the positives also-Danny has just met release clause for Paulinho and got that deal across the line quick smart.Hero and villain all in the space of a few days....What a fickle few some of us are at times ;)

Big C - Well said, and to add on to you comment. All this hype about Villa being unveiled today with the new kit is just a way to get us all to log on an check out a) the new kit but more importantly b) looking for Villa in it. This is marketing at its finest. If you dangle the carrot the donkey follows. Out of interest, what % of people were interested in the kit alone??
Most thought a new signing would be seen which is the attraction, having links to high profile names get people interested even more.
yiddyboy
topho - fair enough, if we haven't been after him then it's pointless discussing him I guess.
JPspurs
Frank - I understand your disappointment as villa is class and media built up our hopes. However, what we don't know is spurs ever did want him or was it just media talk, so maybe a little harsh. Maybe barca wanted vertonghen to deal, maybe villa wanted to stay in Spain. Need more balance.
Windlespur
Also Defoe is in the new kit photo's, should we read anything into that?
yiddyboy
Also all this nonsense works for Coopsie's articles. Could he be the mole, working as a double agent working for the media? :-P
yiddyboy
Well, I am NOT as disappointed as some re. Villa. Fine, we missed out on a prolific international striker (albeit, in his twilight years), but guys, it is the 8th day of the transfer window!. In the past we’d have been linked with a striker the WHOLE of the transfer window only to be advise that we missed out on the last day!. So, in a way, I am pleased that this saga has ended so early in the window. Also, as before, I am of the opinion that we’d be looking to recruit TWO strikers. I am therefore still very optimistic of that and that for each striker that we miss out on, the other targets become more important and URGENT. In deed, I’d be very disappointed if we have not signed at least ONE front man by end of August. At this moment in time, I still have faith in Levy/AVB/Baldini trio. COYS!

Sorry, should read ' end of July'

I love the emotional rollercoaster that is the transfer window, twenty four hours ago a good few on here were ready to suck levy's balls because we had signed paulinho and it looked like villa was nearly sewn up (according to ITK). Now the same folks want to rip Levy's balls off with their teeth cause Villa chose, it seems, to stay in spain. The moral of the story? Either way we're on our knees infront of Levy every transfer window!
Slurms McKenzie
CSWY I was only referring to your over use of the expression "you know nothing" I kept expecting to read John Snow after it every time you used it...

It's nonsense to think our upcoming season hinges on a almost 32 year old striker who most probably was never coming. Do I think he could have done a job?..Yes. Do I think it looked a good bit of business?..Yes. Are there other strikers out there that can do a similar job..Yes. Have the media created a frenzy around Villa to the point lots of us want him at Spurs?..Yes. How many people thought David villa was the way forward at the end of last season? You may argue that we never thought we would be in a position to sign him that is why he was never given much consideration.Well, correct we never were in a position to sign him we (as already stated )got carried away with the hype.Lets get back to basics and sign players that actually want to come to Spurs.Plenty of quality talent out there, some of which I am sure we are GENUINELY interested in.

Oh, I wasn't referring to Vital Spurs topho - but it seems from various reports that we were in for Villa (he was 7/1 to join us only a few days ago). It's also worth noting that there was nothing about Paulinho before he signed, yet we were after him. Same with many many other players. Just because Levy isn't posting on his Facebook that we're signing him doesn't mean we're not after him. I don't think anyone believed it was ever a done deal - however, if we were after him then maybe we should've either a) identified whether he was a realistic target and if he wasn't, forget it or b) get serious about buying him i.e get it wrapped up asap. But like I said - Villa isn't an isolated incident. We've been failing at buying strikers for a few years.
JPspurs
1/7 rather.

123spurs
Asherthesmasher, I hope you are gloating about a blinding striker signing on Sept 2nd, although I shouldn't hold your breath, it won't be before time, we have only been arsing about looking for 4 years, this Villa farce is only the latest in a long line of failures, and near misses. you make a good point about it dragging on though, we have wasted a month since the end of the season on the Villa thing while the likes of Gomez, and Bony have changed hands. We don't have to be narrow re our targets, almost anybody who can get a pair of boots on, would be an improvement on the two we currently have.
Frank
tophobunty, not wanting to be facetious here but if, like you suggest, we were never after him then why would we need to gazump anyone for Villa? If we weren't in for him then Levy's dropped an even bigger bollock by not going for him when he is going at £4.5million

SSN saying that Christian Benteke has handed in written transfer request. Villa say they will act if a bid meets their valuation.

Cider, IMO, Benteke is unlikely to be wanted by Chelsea. They already have Lukaku, about the same age, did well at WBA. What has Benteke got to offer them over Lukaku?

I think a deal can be struck with Villa (Aston) for Benteke. I think he is far too young and maturing (like Bale was) to be seeking a CL club at this age. Spurs can offer him regular game time at a higher level than A Villa. (keep having to put A in front of Villa to stop any confusion!!!). I think it's do-able with a player exchange and other incentives (sell-on fee, appearance based add-ons etc..). COYS!
Critical_Spur
tophobunty, I am a fan of Levy. Do you think I'm not a fan because I think he should've done a bit better striker wise? That's a bit simplistic.

Critical-topho... Valid points, I personally think that Spurs would be the next sensible progression in his career. Most probably more game time as you say.Reports(I know,I know)have said Chelsea may be in for him as a cheaper alternative to Cavani.True/false Who knows. Big pressure on a youngster who comes with a hefty price tag.(caroll Liverpool springs to mind). Especially if he is THE main striker signing to take us to the next level. Gooners have strikers who can help out,as do Chelsea. Spurs.............?.
Cider spurs
Slurms, they paid 17 fo him and he's still young, the don't need the money and wouldn't want to sell to us. Plus he's going to be a world class striker in a year or 2

tophobunty, I haven't seen anything from the club suggesting we're after Benteke. Have you?

Cider, IMO, JM is under just as much pressure at Chelsea as AVB with us. However, JM, throughout his recent (10 years!) successes has had high profile squads. I expect Abrom to back him for another prolific striker. I can't see them going for Benteke due to lack of experience at the highest level. Of course, if they decide to off-load Torres / Ba, I'd be happy see either of those at the Lane.....both could well be in Levy's price bracket.

The thing that has hit me most is how (literally) quiet AVB is during this transfer window. In comparison HR would've been mouthing off how 'triffic every available player was and how he'd like to do a deal, etc!! AVB is going about it in a professional and discreet manner and I am sure he has his jigsaw pieces identified and we could well be way off mark!!!
Critical_Spur
topho-I would like to think Aston villa were in the box seat. We all know that for clubs once these things happen it is seldom the case though. Can see either Lukaku or Benteke starting for Chelsea,I would be surprised if they both started. Dunno wot you think?.
Cider spurs
so levy is to blame because he offered much more than atletico, but the player decided to stay in his home country, not relocate his family, and play in the CL. Levy you ********. And of course the club has wasted the entire month only thinking about villa and not making any contingency plans so now we are completely *****ed. and of course benteke can easliy be sorted this week because otherwise levy is up to his old tricks again. just pay them the 35 million they want and get it sorted nice and quick. of course other teams like arsenal and chelsea might be interested, offering more wages and CL, but I am sure he will pick spurs if we rush him. he certainly won't consider waiting it out and seeing who might join the auction later in the window, no, if it doesn't happen this week then its simpy levy's fault because he wants to wait till the end of august because the papers said so... makes sense.
Guernman
Critical_..I posted on here a few weeks ago that I thought AVB had a few aces up his sleeve. Benteke is a self-confessed Arsenal fan. Add to that Chelsea want him. The only reason we'd get him is if either of them are not interested. Should all the stars align and we manage to snap him up how long will it be before he starts agitating for a move from us (a la Berbatov, Modric etc.) if a 'bigger' club start sniffing. Benteke is showing he is a mercenary with little loyalty anybody but himself. Good luck to him but we should be focusing our efforts on strikers who will be with us for 4-5 years not 4-5 months before looking at greener grass somewhere else. The way he's behaving with Villa at the moment should be a lesson to whoever signs him. Be careful what you wish for. There is better and more loyal out there.
SpuriousLife
People saying 'chill, theres plenty of time left' are killing me. What on earth makes u think this will be any different from any other year. Expect Ade and Defeo here for another season. Maybe we'll get the 30 goal a season Ade, but I very much doubt it!
liamyid
Spurious-Fair comments mate,It jusy maybe that Benteke has been ill advised by agents etc.He is quite still young and impressionable i'm guessing, but that will not stop an agent trying to make a hefty profit of his back. They might not make so much in the future if he was only a one season wonder.Just a thought.
Cider spurs
Only go to look at Andy carroll to see how much value can be wiped in short amount of time.
Cider spurs
Very true Cider. After the Berbatov and Modric sagas we know how disruptive and destructive a key player basically going on strike can be. Benteke is a great player but we need great TEAM players for what AVB is trying to nurture. I'm not sure Benteke fits that mould yet.
SpuriousLife
Seems Villa wont sell Benteke less than 25m. And I cannot see us signing Beneteke anyhing over 20m given our record transer is 17m Paulinho.
If Levy invested 17m in midfielder, may be we are eady to go farther in prooity striker signing. Who knows.
Havin said that I prefer Soldado over Benteke - proven reliable goal scorer who can fit into our XI straiht away
sydqcb5
Cider , huge difference in form, finess & class between Carroll & Benteke. Remember Benteke is no1 for Belgium too and did very well in WC qualifiers.
sydqcb5
I bloody hate all this Levy bashing it makes me sick. None of us know what really goes on but rumour was we offered a couple of million short of the 8. something million Barca wanted but hold on they accepted 4.4 million from Atletico Madrid? Please tell me how is that Levys' fault? Oh god are Atletico in Champions League? Hmmm perhaps we need to get a grip and think that's why Villa chose them. I suppose not being in Champions League is all Levys' fault. He signed the 'meal ticket' cos he was knocking them in left right and centre and Harry wanted him so he backed him and got him in and promptly shat on us once he got his contract. Levy you need to be telepathic aswell in your job buddy to appease many Spurs fans. We as a club have done nothing for years yet we expect blood. It's a joke.
Jocka101
sydqc-So what you implying? Benteke worth more than £35 million?. Tidy bit of money for an agent if that is the case would you not agree?.
Cider spurs
SpuriousLife, Benteke earns 20k a week. If he knows Villa value him at 25m and there are clubs who can give 3 or 4 times the wages, why wouldn't he consider a move ? Its common - same situation can happen to anyone and almost in every case, people take the better job offer.

Football business is ruthless - his happens at every level. We can expect loyalty only if they are part of setup from a young age; if not its bit pointless. Loyalty works both ways too. Villa bought Bent for 24m and have now benched him for a entire season and kind of ruined his ame play. Ed of the day, being ruthless & benching him kind of worked for Villa.
sydqcb5
Cider , no the opposite - Carroll is not worth 20million and his drop in form cannot be compared with Benteke
sydqcb5
Cider , to me Benteke is worth 20m. Anything more than that is a risky proposition.
sydqcb5
syd-£20 million seems about right to me, however, he still belongs to Villa and although no club wants a player who does not wish to wear the shirt I can see Villa asking silly money for him. This is my concern and this is their right. We all expected top dollar for Modric and will if Bale was to leave.
Cider spurs
Hmmmm. Rumours linking Benteke to Chavs? OK. Torres anyone?

Spuds-U-Like
Well Christian Benteke has made his intentions very clear by handing in a transfer request and not travelled to Germany on Villa's pre-season tour. We will now see if Levy is interested in the services of a striker with a lot of potential, who has proved he can score goals in the prem, yes it's only one season, but at 22 yrs old and in our side more goals will follow. What ever price Villa put on him, he has to be considered. Along with Roberto Soldado apparently £25m, which seems like a fair price for a player who may be in his late 20s, but has blossomed on the international stage of late, with 6 goals in 11 appearances. Who will be Spain's front man very soon. Are we serious about getting into next seasons champions league or is it just ''hogwash'' two strikers may cost us around 50m take away 30m for champions league football and we have two strikers @ 10m each come next may 2014.
spu 4 life
Back to David Villa. The poster who assumed Levy must have offered less than Atletico was dead wrong. Both Fiorentina & Spurs offered £2.5-3.5m more. Villa chose Atletico to stay in spain & compete for a world cup place in the CL.

That's our problem with attracting really top talent this season especially. It's always more dificult when you don't have CL, but we really are going to be playing 2nd fiddle to CL clubs in this pre WC season.

We've hardly got a good track record where this a "bent" in the surname. Are we sure we want Benteke?
muttley
forget loyalty from players to clubs and vice versa...where's the loyalty to Livermore or Thud?, where was the loyalty to O'Hara? how about Bentley he's been loyal and stuck with us but gets loads of stick...;) The point I'm making is loyalty is impossible in footy without a dollop load of other factors....Villa know Benteke wants to leave let's hope we can get in there and Jose isn't the interested party (would think he'd be after Ade after working with him at RM..;)..)
shedboy2
Morning Guys and dolls, well now that the dust has settled on the Whole David Villa issue I think a few people need to eat some humble pie. Apparently we offered 3-4m Euros more than Madrid, but as Villa always said he wanted to stay in Spain they accepted out of respect for the player. So to put an end to it: NOTHING MORE WE COULD HAVE DONE. Im gutted because he would have been awesome for spurs, but relived as its quite clear his heart wasn’t in the move. Anywhooo….

I must be the only guy on Vital spurs who is putting a hex on this whole Benteke saga. I seriously think this will be the biggest case of “bent mark 2” since…..well….l bent mark 1! ONE GOOD SEASON FFS guys, and you want us to spunk all our transfer funds (well hopefully not all) on a guy who has had one good season? Not for me, and I’ll go on record and say I think it will be a bad signing. IF the reported figure is £25m then that’s just crazy. I know there’s a few on here thinking we will get him for a lot less than 20, but I think Villa have been pretty clear on the fee. Just like we are with our players. I still think we should bring a relatively unheard player in, a gamble if you will, say max £8-£10m…then stick a £25m bid in for either Jovetic or Lamela.
hudderspur
I’ve just read that the stumbling block was David Villa’s wage demands –he wasn’t prepared to take a drop on his £130k at Barcelona and Levy wasn’t willing to match it.

LOYALTY and O'Hara should not be mentioned together, as a club we stood by him during his back surgery in 2010, his attitude was shi7e towards this club, who stood by him, he did not want to sit on the bench and got above his station, so he goes out on loan to wolves, to play and get fit; His reaction to wolves relegaton was:- Injury prone midfielder Jamie O'Hara has launched a scathing attack on relegated Wolves, saying he is embarrassed by the clubs plight over the last few years. O'Hara, 26, missed the first half of the season through injury as the Molineux side suffered back-to-back relegations into League One. He said: 'I’ve got the ability to play in the Premier League, says who?

We have Ade, Defoe and Dempsey, plus Kane and Obika waiting in the wings, why would we need Benteke and Solado, i will let you work that one out?

Hudderspur, Benteke is certainly not another Darren Bent. Yes he scores goals incidentaly with his he,ad as well as his feet, unlike Bent. He can hold it up with his back to goal, has a football brain, brings others into the game, his movement is intelligent and he is a big powerful hard to mark unit who almost single handedly kept AV in the PL. He is a big step up from Darren Bent.
Frank
I don’t understand why we seem to find it impossible to sign a striker. There are plenty knocking around banging them in for fun around Europe, so why do we struggle. I just hope AVB / Baldini know EXACTLY who they are going for and are already in discussions with them. Like we all said, one isn’t enough. We have to assume one of ADE or Defoe is one the move so by bringing just one forward in we haven’t solved the problem. I must admit, I though ny now we would have shifted a few out, and possibly brought a striker in. I know the windows only been officially “open” for just over a week but the season finished a month and a half ago. We have been talking to baldini by all accounts since march, so???? Just a bit concerned that we fly out to china in less than a fortnight, it would have been just swell to have the full squad there. AVB has said pre season and especially the Asia tournament is massive in our development for the start of the season. One would assume that meant playing with the bloody squad you intend to play with no?? What’s the point in taking Ade or Kane if they aren’t going to feature in the season ahead?? Ay very least we need to have our squad done and dusted before the Monaco game on the 3rd August…….les than 4 weeks away!!! Suddenly doesn’t seem so quite early in the window does it?
hudderspur
Only 2 positives from new kit release pictures - Gareth Bale featured, Emmanuel Adebayor didnt.
OzSpurs2013
If we are not allowed to believe the media re links with David Villa and Spurs, why do we believe that Aston Villa have turned down £30M for Benteke, or that Chelsea are in for him, as reported by the same media. If he has asked for a move, we should be in like a rat up a drain pipe, staking a claim, then let's see who comes in. We can offer EL football, to at least double his wages, guaranteed game time, the company of two fellow Belgians, in Vertonghen and Dembele, and the opportunity to play in a far stronger and better quality squad. We have an array of discards who could be used in the deal if necessary. OK if Chelsea are interested, and bid, he might go there, but we will never know unless we are in there competing. When I say competing, I don't mean as some on here would, to offer some derisory silly £10M sum or similar, which realistically is around half the current value of a 15-20 goal PL striker, whether that be Benteke or anybody else. We need to stop playing silly buggers, and offer a realistic sum. One thing for certain is that if we don't buy a ticket we can't win the raffle, we will just sit and watch what will be will be, sounds strangely familiar that. We are desperate for a striker to come in, and it needs to be done early, in time for pre-season and the first game, Benteke would fit the profile of what we need. Yes there is a risk, but there is with any signing at any club, history is littered with them, everybody has had their David Bentleys, and Darren Bents, (although we got a decent wedge back on him), but anybody who fears getting it wrong, won't take the risk, is possibly in the wrong business, football is not an exact science, every club gets it wrong sometimes but it doesn't stop them.
Frank
Topho, how on earth did you deduce that I was criticising Levy? I simply posted that I had read he wouldn’t pay £130k. It was a different angle from what had generally been reported and it hadn’t been mentioned on this site – that’s why I threw it into the mix. If it’s true, and Levy thinks £130k is too much, that’s fine by me.
GARYKIR
I will happily go on record to say that we won't sign Benteke this window. Other clubs (Arsenal and Chelsea) are interested in him and the price will probably end up a bit too rich for us. Benteke is a great forward with a lot of potential but I fear he will be plying his trade in London but not N17 next season. Does anybody have any idea as to what happened to the Arsenal - Higuain deal? It's gone very quiet and yesterday they submit a £30m offer for Suarez? All a bit odd to me. If there was any chance of us gate-crashing the party and getting Higuain and / or Suarez I would take them above Benteke any day of the week.
SpuriousLife
Frank - another very good post. Can't fault your logic at all.
SpuriousLife
The main factor now affecting the Benteke issue, and Villa's valuation, is that they are no longer in full control. The fact that Benteke has now lodged a transfer request, means they have a choice between reaching a realistic agreement with a club to sign him, or to keep a player who no longer wants to play for them, not an ideal scenario for them.
Frank
If we have decided that we are unable/unwilling to compete with whoever for the better players, then perhaps we should admit it, stop the charade, and move down a level for our targets. There have already been two deals done for players in this category i.e. Van Wolfswinkle and Bony. If we are resigned to always likely to lose out to the Chelseas, or Arsenals of this world then why bother bidding against them, although perhaps we should ask Vertonghen why he chose us over Arsenal, or Paulinho why he chose Spurs above others, or why Gareth Bale chose us against Man U. To just admit defeat without even joining the race is defeatest
Frank
Arsenal bidding for Suarez seems like a media stunt to me. The buck-toothed biter wants to get of the English game because of all the unfair negative attention he has recieved. He doesn't want to just leave Liverpool. I think arsenal are bidding safe in the knowledge that he won't sign for them but it looks impressive to the fans - now that Wenger seems to be willing to spend big money, without actually signing anyone. A similar ploy to the bid for Rooney and now Higuain deal has gone quiet. Us Spurs wouldn't know anything about a chairman behaving in this fashion though! Chelsea and Mourinho are being linked with Benteke as lazy maths equates him to the new Drogba (I thought that was supposed to be Lukaka) so they must want him? Surely the special one hasn't returned just to try and rewind the clock back nine years? If chelsea want him they'll sign him and he can become the new Dumba Ba - six months at Chelseas then off to the back end of Russia. To be fair everyone was talking about Cavani and Benteke in the same breath, they were like twin brothers just from different mothers! Sympathies to Aston villa fans after our experiences with Modric - better to ship him out quick for decent money then try and hold onto him all summer and poision their pre-season. Not nice. I would have prefered to get Willy Bony for the reported 12 mllion Swansea have bid!
Slurms McKenzie
Frank, based on your post above, just some passing questions... Are you happy to have Paulinho at the Lane?, Was 17 mill not a record? Was there no other interest in him?. We got him and broke our transfer record. So IMO, your argument is NOT valid. Similarly, the club (AVB/Baldini/Levy) may have a striker(s) target and have funds earmarked. I think it premature to be so critical in this window considering it's early days (NINE to be exact)!. Sure, no one wants to be starting the season with unfinished business. But let's wait until at least end of July before spitting our venom at the trio. COYS!
Critical_Spur
Critical I think most on here worry that we haven't addressed the striker issue early doors as every team on the planet knows we are light int he striker department and every week that passes just adds a couple of million to the asking price for Spurs. Villa move to Ath. Madrid seems to show this if Spurs want your striker then he's at least fifty percent more then to most other clubs! Had we signed a striker early - Bony for 12 million (OMG) for example, we could have still gone after another striker but without the stink of desperation in our deals! Signing Paulinho means we now have the summer to prune our midfield with no pressure to get replacements in I would much rather have all our incoming deals resolved in the first three weeks of the window and spend the rest of it selling or loaning our players out. Spending early also means we know the financial target we need to meet from out going deals for setting transfer fees gets a lot easier. Just my opinion. On a side note "I think it premature to be so critical in this window considering it's early days (NINE to be exact)" gave me a giggle considering Critical_Spur posted it!

Spuds-U-Like Villa staying in Spain has nothing to do with us not playing CL. He didn't want to leave Spain and as such who can blame him. As I said in a posy days ago when this came up before, his choice is to spend the last year or two of his career at the top playing in the nice warm sun where injuries and knocks do heal quicker and playing for a world cup place, which he stands more of a chance getting if he plays in Spain. Or he can come to damp wet grey gloomy cold windy London tp play out his final years with the probability of no football in the world cup. No brainer really. IF it were, as you imply, all or mostly about CL then we would never have got Lloris, Paulhino or Verts and kept Bale. It's about the long haul now and these players can see this, that is why they are with us, because they can see a bright future awaiting them at White Hart lane.
chrishove123
Haven't read all the posts- just saw that the Napoli fee for Damiao ( yes, it's him again) is RUMOURED to be 18 M with wages of £36 500.
Durbanspur
Cider spurs I put a link up to that report so I was actually expanding on things so people could get more info if they wanted. Nothing like ignoring a link is there. LOL
chrishove123
The window has been open for 9 days, this is just a piece of meaningless maths. Clubs can, and many have been, doing deals since the last game of the season in mid May, just waiting for signatures on contracts on July 1st. Two far more important dates are 1) The start of the pre-season games, and 2) The most important date, the first PL fixture. To avoid the nonsense that has blighted previous early season results, we must, if we have any sense at all, ideally have our deals completed, done and dusted, by (1), and definitely so that any signings are ready for (2).
Frank
I share Slurms view, I cannot for the life of me understand our total lack of interest in Wilfried Bony, a striker with a goal/game stats and Ivory Coast international at a paltry £12M. Swansea have possibly done it again, Michu and Bony very tasty.
Frank
I didn't say it did chrishove, I merely put that in as ONE of the possible reasons why he wanted to stay in Spain, not the only one.

Spuds-U-Like
I am sorry, but I don't buy the idea why we haven't signed such and such and binging up the said players' statistics to convince ourselves how we missed buying him/them. Torres and Carroll come to mind as prime examples. You have to trust AVB (along with Baldini) to buy the right striker for HIS vision and style/formation, also in the context of the rest of the squad. Someone that scores regularly for one team may be an utter failure in AVB's formation. I don't think for a minute AVB doesn't realise the obvious deficiencies and I am confident he KNOWS whom he wants and working towards that goal. Just because no one is uttering a word at THFC does not mean nothing is being done about it. I am glad the media are also struggling to coax a statement from the club or the manager. The way to do it imo. COYS!
Critical_Spur
Absolutely Critical, wouldn't surprise me if the majority of media bo//ox isn't dis-information put out by clubs to disguise their real targets & it only becomes true nearer completion of any deal.

Spuds-U-Like
I don't doubt that they know who they want Critical, but if you know who you want then you will also have a fair idea of how easy /difficult its going to be to sign them and what it will take to make the deal happen. I know a little bit of horse trading has to go on but the longer we take to sign our targets the more distilled the market gets as other clubs options disappear down the oil wells of City, Chelsea, PSG, Monaco or barely put a dent in deficits of Madrid or Barca. The trasnfer window isn't an all you can eat affair the pickings are limited and if you haggle too long you're left with the bare bones to pick over. Our previous transfer windows have been littered with too many Raisk or Dempsey types and not enough Modric and Vertongen types. Look at how quickly the early signing of Verts helped him settle in, waiting for the season to be nearly six weeks old before Lloris was established probably cost us the champions league spot this season.
Slurms McKenzie
Slurm, I agree with most of what you are saying. FWIW, I have a hunch that it IS Benteke that we are after. The age, his footballing attributes all fit the bill as to what AVB would appear to want at Spurs. Now that he has handed a transfer request, my be things will begin to move?. I was always under the impression that we'd be signing two strikers, an experienced (mature) one and an up and coming hungry youngster. Not even going to guess who the experienced one may be, but thee may well be some available at a later date, e.g., Ba, Torres and even one or two of the European contingents. I am 'nervous' to say the least (the longer it goes on), but am sure at least ONE of our CHOICE will arrive. Alas, only AVB knows what/whom he wants.
Critical_Spur
Would it not make more sense to pay 25M on Doumbia? I don't believe the final figure for Benteke will be 25M and if it is, do not be surprised if some other club comes in and offers him 130k/week. We can compete for the transfer fees but the wage amounts may well be a non-starter. Still say Dzagoev, Rebic and Atsu makes more sense. Spread the risk while gaining three young potential stars. COYS

Spuds-U-Like Yeah OK but I was stating the reason I thought would have been, in my mind, the most probable reason.

Coopsie, if those two deals go through as claimed I would be very happy. I really think, under Harry, we lost sight of the future and are still trying to offload the glut and get the infusion of kids back in. Although he brought in Walker, Naughton and Sandro, Sandro was ready to step in to the PL on day one and Walker and Naughton were both a year out, though they both got stints in their first year. Better still Jedvaj and Halilovic will both be considered home grown, which is a huge plus. Precisely why I was banging on about Castaignos, Perisic and Arnautovic 2 plus years ago. COYS
