First things first, getting an opening game win is rare, but also vital. Regardless of any performance issues, that is what really counts.
We can nit pick over one or two sloppy passes, missed chances or whatever problems we see or just imagine, but lets all remember that is is still the middle of August and we shouldn't expect a perfect display so soon in the season, especially when we saw four league debuts and the returns of two centre halves, where both missed most of pre season, whilst one has been out for the best part of a year.
To be honest, whilst accepting a few frustrations, I was quietly (ish) impressed with all the players on show and feel confident that all of the new buys will be major successes. Saldado looked sharp and just the fox in the box that we need, Paulinho has looked excellent and a real driving force on the middle, with of course an eye for goal that we have missed. Capoue looked outstanding in his brief time on the pitch, whilst Chadli, looked to gain confidence with every minute on the pitch.
Others may divide opinion, such as Dawson being in the 'best' starting XI over a fully fit Kaboul and Vertonghen, Lennon being a first choice if Bale returns or whether Townsend or another player should get the nod. Whilst despite his all too regular lapses, I feel that Kyle Walker has impressed, Danny Rose looks to be getting better and better with every game, Mousa Dembele looks more able to influence games, whilst the same applies to Gylfi Sigurdsson, away from the shackles of the left wing, though having a greater attacking threat at full back is also sure to make a left midfielders life easier to an extent.
If we consider that we had no Sandro, Bale, Adebayor, BAE, Parker or Holtby, and the whole squad are still not 100% match sharp and are still developing understandings and confidence, I felt we did ourselves proud. The fact I assume we have greater depth in quality, is likely to bring greater game upon game rotation. That may keep players fresh and also focussed on keeping their place in the side, such is the competition. That also means that players get moved around and take longer to gain that understanding and instinct is more of a gamble with players around them, it will get there, but just take time.
Of course many of those last group of players will be gone before we play our September games, and we will also see others come in to replace them. That will again make for another transition, but despite the team display not being perfect, I saw enough to feel we are heading in the right direction and that it wont be long before we are firing on all cylinders and pushing the CL places and perhaps more...
