As a long time reader/occasional poster, I thought I might submit an article (my first) about my general perceptions on the comments to other articles and some of the threads in the forum in terms of our progress and predictions for the upcoming season.
I think generally, people fall into one of the three categories - optimist, pessimist and realist. Before I start, I want to say that there are a lot of great posters, posting a lot of good opinion and knowledge and I am not pigeon-holing anyone in particular. You may be one, two or all three of the below at different points depending on what is going on - I think I fall into that category!
The Optimist - while I think optimism is a positive thing and with some of our signings there is every reason to be, I feel it can also lead to disappointment. I have read a lot of people say that that 'we will win the league this year', so what happens if we do not challenge for the title and say finish 4th? Is that a disappointing season? Will people start having a go at the manager, players and for not reaching 'their' expectations by challenging for the title?
The Pessimist - in my opinion, the pessimism comes from the fact that it can be very frustrating to be a Spurs fan. I have been through years of thinking we had the players to do really well in the league and yet I constantly find myself at the end of the season handing over ?50 to the Scum supporting mate with whom I have an annual bet on who will finish higher in the league. So I can understand comments like 'we will just bottle it again' or other history repeats itself type comments. And I have a feeling that the general response from the pessimist if we do really well and finish in the top 3 will be 'about time, we should have been in the top 3 for the past 5 years'.
The Realist - everyone likes to think they are being realistic, but I think the true realists are generally seen as not being as passionate about the club as others. It's as if not believing we are the best team in the league or being angry as to the reason why we are not means you don't really care either way. But the thing is, the realist has something the others do not and that is the fact that whether you win, lose or draw, the expectations are more balanced and based on the current situation, not some fantasy or what has happened in the past. And I do not believe being realistic means you care any less about the club - celebrations due to any success will be just as raucous!
Optimist, Pessimist or Realist, we all have one thing in common - we are Spurs! So regardless of your expectations, let's get behind the team, manager and chairman - all of which seem to be falling in place nicely. Just make sure we finish above the scum - as well as the ?50 bet, he said he would wear a Spurs shirt on a night of my choosing. Hoping I can pick the night we win the league!
