We're all buzzing with the transfers that have already happened this summer and the ones that are still rumours.
The question is why have we suddenly put our foot on the accelerator this transfer window, why now? Obviously the first factor is Gareth Bale. His sale, assuming it goes ahead, will mean a big cash injection and we basically spend what we earn. There is also the consideration that last season Bale carried the team to some extent, so if he is going then a more balanced squad becomes urgent.
Another factor may be confidence in the management. Towards the end of Harry's reign Levy, rightly in my opinion, kept him on a tight reign in the transfer market as he basically had lost confidence in him. Now not only do we have AVB, who turned down other clubs this summer, but a new Director of Football. Levy may simply have more confidence in the men now in place to get the transfers right.
It is a fundamental rule in football you don't let a manager spend money if you are thinking of firing him, so hopefully the current set up will be here for a while. Something else that may play a part in all this is the new stadium. It is inevitable that building the stadium will mean a few tight years. Wenger showed with the Emirates that if you go into the building phase with a strong squad that can get Champions League football regularly it is a big help in carrying you over the hump.
This window is essentially our last chance to put that squad together before financing the new ground becomes the priority. This transfer window seems like a one off to me, I don't expect this level of activity to recur in the next few years. But if we've got the transfers right that won't matter, we'll have the strongest squad we've had for an awful long time. The next objective will be to start bringing through a few youth players all the way to the first team.
