As we head towards the final frantic week (and a bit) of transfer dealings, including an unveiling of Gareth Bale at the Bernabeu, I am feeling more positive about the season ahead than any year since Ossie and Ricky arrived at The Lane.
Much has been written over the summer about our transfer strategy. With the benefit of hindsight rather than any particular ITK, it seems that a sale of Gareth Bale to RM was considered by the Board to be a realistic possibility provided a) we got a ridiculous amount of money and b) we delivered to AVB a squad that was capable of challenging for both CL and trophies.
Given that Levy would probably have to play the long game on Bale with RM, Lewis agreed to commit funds to enable Levy to do some early work on new players. If Bale was eventually sold then we balance the books, the Levy way, if RM failed to come up with the money then Bale stays and the Lewis loan is confirmed.
The strategy has largely worked. Some fantastic additions and one player (Capoue) who no-one really knew when he signed but looks magnificent. Plus returning players from long term injury and premier league loans who have added stregth and pace to key positions.
If we land Lamela and the Romanian centre half, as seems likely, then the squad is nearly complete. With one important exception. Willian is the only set-back of the transfer window and the final dot we needed to join in terms of a creative player who will have the quick feet and brain to beat a tight defence and read the movement of Soldado, Lamela etc.
We have already seen that Siggy is not (yet) that player and Holtby has already said that he prefers to operate from deeper - a number 6 rather than a number 10. So who is the player that will complete the joining of the dots?
Maybe Baldini has another rabbit to pull out of the hat, maybe we will have to bide our time and give something for Baldini to do during the a! utumn months and time for AVB to develop the squad and way of playing. Maybe by December we will conclude there is no missing link?
