Hermes, the Messenger of the Gods, is depicted with winged feet. He is also, appropriately, the God of sport and athletics, and his speed and cunning - in some myths he is a trickster who outwits other gods for the sake of mankind - assist him in moving freely between the worlds of people and Gods. The second youngest of the Gods, the son of Zeus's symbols include the tortoise, lyre, snake ... and the cockerel! So it might be natural to ask: did Hermes ever walk among us? Did he enjoy the Beautiful Game? More to the point: was he a Spur?
There was a young lad, called Gareth, who could easily have been him. Fleet of foot and possessing cunning and trickery, he entered the pantheon of the Gods when casks of gold and diamonds were dispatched to White Hart Lane in exchange for his presence in a foreign land. He had graced the hallowed turf for six winters and summers and in his last season there he finally came to be loved by all of us who swear allegiance to the cockerel. What a joyful sight he was! Tearing down the field on his winged feet, leaving mortal opponents flailing in his wake, or shooting with deadly accuracy and power to leave the enemy shredded and defeated. Of course we wanted him to grace us forever: no amount of gemstones or jewels could ever take his place. Many words were spoken, no doubt promises were made and broken, but all the beseeching from the elders of the cockerel clan fell on deaf ears, and he left us, with empty spaces in the hearts that he occupied.
Despite all the sadness and bitterness surrounding your departure, we will never forget you, Gareth. You deemed it the right time to leave us and we respect that. But we wanted one more season, just for a final time to experience the gladness of heart brought by seeing you flying down the field on winged feet and delivering your God-like coup de grace over our prostrate enemies. Also, we are afraid for you. We fear that you have fallen into the company of rogues and vain men who will hurt and corrupt you. But the memory of your grace and purity of purpose reassures us, and we know that you will eventually take the seat reserved for you among the Gods. Our wishes for you, in the words of the prophet: May your hands always be busy May your feet always be swift May you have a strong foundation When the winds of changes shift May your heart always be joyful May your song always be sung And may you stay Forever young. Take care, mate. It's been real.
