Whatever team you follow, there are always areas for improvement, however small and fans are often guilty of exaggerating issues that are really not significant in the opinion of the manager or board, but whilst a side like Spurs are making major strides in their development, they are also prone to have off days, just like every other team. It is often how you recover and react that shows the true quality and certainly in the case of Tottenham, we know they have quality and seemingly are a united group of players, now we find out if they have bottle and 'bouncebackability'…
There is of course the frustration that the boys can't play again for two weeks due to the international break and only time will tell whether the distraction of international football will work for or against the players, but I hope the boys are angry with themselves and the realisation is now set in their heads that they have to play at a high tempo and with fight and urgency, instead of being lulled into a pace that suits the opposition. Were they tired following the Russian trip, was it just an off-day or were we simply beaten by the better side on the day? I suppose we will never know, but again these things happen and we have seen with all our Premiership rivals, that it is possible to slip up against perceived weaker sides.
I was surprised at AVB's selection, as I fully expected Soldado to start and also hoped to see Fryers covering for the injured Rose, as Naughton simply doesn't look right in himself and detracts from our system in making us even more narrow behind the ever cutting in, Sigurdsson, and that makes us more predictable and easier to defend against, especially when the unwell Walker, wasn't at his energetic best.
It is an impossible call for a manager to make everyone happy and to a degree, I feel he was trying to please everyone in selecting the 'inform' Defoe, but was he ignoring the movement and little flicks that Soldado brings to the party? If Roberto started in Russia, to give him confidence and as a result Jermain started yesterday, I would have felt it sensible, however the reality is that it didn't work out, even though it is unfair to pick out Defoe as a villain. Once again, we lacked enough creativity from those around the No9 and are we already in a situation where our opposition know that if they stop Eriksen, they stop Tottenham?
Perhaps AVB can use the next two weeks to look again at his system and how to be more inventive and penetrative in the attacking third and convert the possessional and territorial dominance into comprehensive victories. Does this mean we have to look at someone like Holtby to play with Eriksen? Lamela to have a greater influence or do we miss the pace of aaron Lennon more than we think? Perhaps we have to look at our midfield two? Does Sandro have to play? Does Capoue have the better all round game that Dembele or Sandro to partner Paulinho? Of course many of these questions could be considered knee-jerk, but are they issues that are still unresolved in the mind of AVB due to injuries and therefore a lack of opportunity to try them?
As things stand, I am happy to accept that we were just beaten by a side that played above their ability and worked to a system that caught us out. Would the result and performance been totally different if we had taken a first half lead? Of course, as west Ham would have had to play differently to salvage something and I believe that would have probably played into our hands. Sadly for us, it didn't, and even though I concede we didn't play well and still have a few things to work on, it was hopefully a bad day at the office and these things happen...
