If everyone is fit, you assume that we now have five players that are competing for two wide(r) roles in the Tottenham first team. a very nice dilemma for Andre Villas-Boas to have and in a long season that is sure to see injuries and drops in form, having such depth is very nice, however keeping everyone happy and motivated, is perhaps going to be his biggest challenge.
Two new signings of Nacer Chadli and Erik Lamela are perhaps yet to fully establish themselves as players that are fully deserving of starts in a 'best' Spurs XI at this time, but you assume that their own best is yet to come, as they adjust to their new club and country. The return of Andros Townsend has perhaps given AVB his most pleasant surprise, whilst the improvement in form, goal threat and developing chemistry between Sigurdsson, Eriksen and Soldado, makes Gylfi a player that might now be considered a player that is fully deserving of a starting place. with that in mind, where does that leave Aaron Lennon?
Despite being a relative Spurs veteran, he is still only twenty-six, so should we be writing him off because he hasn't quite matched our inflated expectations or because we have others that are now 'more exciting and more expensive' to entertain us. The facts are obvious that we are not scoring enough and based on that and the as yet unfulfilled talents of Lamela and Chadli, does this give Aaron a foot back into the team and into a straight fight between himself and Gylfi and Andros for those two spots?
I have suggested in a few comments that we might not be playing to the strengths of Roberto Soldado and it isn't him that is the problem but the way we are supplying him. Both his goals in open play, were arriving from wide positions, either cutting the ball back slightly or straight across. Both Townsend and Sigurdsson all too often cut inside and that narrows the supply for our striker. Is that an area where Aaron can solve our supply and therefore scoring problems?
Perhaps we have also missed the two pronged pace attack of Bale and Lennon, therefore could pairing Townsend and Lennon offer a frightening proposition to an opposition defence. Does it also give us the ability to constantly swap wings, meaning that the full backs have to face differing threats, as one or the other bombard them with runs, inside or out? Townsend has been excellent this season, but especially when we have been without Danny Rose in recent weeks, would the prospect of having that left footer in either Townsend or Lamela have been a way to rebalance the team and not keep us so narrow and predictable.
As a player, Lennon does have his own deficiencies, but so too do all the others competing for those two places. Question is, do Aaron's qualities outweigh those of others and does his hard work, team ethic and right footed, wing play and therefore natural width, offer more or less that his rivals for his first team place?..
