After the recent heroics of he who need not be named, it feels like the perfect time for a discussion about our young lads an their futures.
I have to say, as a big admirer of promoting from the ranks, this is the most talent-filled youth team I've seen us possess in my lifetime at least. We have the more seasoned youngsters in Carroll, Kane, Livermore, Smith and yes you could even say Townsend. We have the ones who are seemingly next in line, the likes of Pritchard, Hall, Fryers, Ceballos. We then have the ones who will now be looking to be loaned out perhaps to get their first tastes of competitive football, Coulthirst, Bentaleb, Archer, McEvoy, Stewart and the forgotten man Coulibaly.
All of these players have tremendous ability and potential, there's no question in that. Some are out on loan proving this, others are strutting their stuff in our youth squads. The real question is though, as our profile and expectations as a club continue to rise, are you prepared to put your faith in them? Over the summer we purchased over 100 million pounds worth of new talent, but what does this say for our younguns? Will they get the chance when it's perhaps easier to play someone you just spent £10million on? Granted, most of these players need time to develop, either here or elsewhere, but what about when they're ready if they ever are?
I use Carroll and Pritchard as perfect examples. I feel both have the quality and temperament to be superb players for us. But will they ever get the chance to prove this? Look who is playing in the same position as Carroll; Holtby, Paulinho, Dembele, Sandro, Capoue. As Pritchard; Siggurdsson, Chadli, Townsend, Lennon, Lamela, Eriksen. Surely as we aim to push for the title the manager will stick with the players he can trust and rely upon, (although some still have a lot to prove but you get my point).
At the fear of boring you to sleep, one final question. You are the gaffer. Do you gamble on potential, or play it safe with the quality acquired from other clubs and continue to acquire from? COYS!!!
