When you cost in the region of £30m, it might be considered reasonable that you hit the ground, not only running, but that you do so faster than a Jamaican sprinter named Bolt…
However, as Spurs have found out, just because you spend big, doesn't guarantee instant results and performances that make the fans and media drool. Of course the same could be said about Gareth Bale and many other big money buys, but is it simply unreasonable and unrealistic to expect a player to instantly look great, when he is not only at a new club, but new country, that speak a different language and even drive on the 'wrong' side of the road?
In a World Cup year, players and international managers also heap greater pressure to perform, which can in itself make it harder to play to the best of your ability. Certainly in the cases of Soldado and Lamela, we have two players of unquestioned quality, but ones that need time to adjust to the surroundings on and off the pitch and that takes far longer than a few games.
A players personal life and family can also make integration easier or harder, and we often forget how difficult it could be if the family are stuck in a hotel for weeks or even in rented accommodation, and for those of us who are married or in a long relationship, we know only too well that an unsettled partner can make our lives even more difficult. Being single on the other hand can create its own problems as boredom can get the better of a young man and lead to mischief. Just ask Giovani dos Santos
You assume that Lamela knows the score, as he has moved from Argentina to Italy already, but that doesn't mean that this move is therefore easy and at twenty-one, he is still very young, despite already achieving a lot professionally. Soldado is I believe, Married with two children, but with that comes its own problems, such as schooling, a greater urgency to find a permanent house, plus the Soldado family have never lived outside of Spain, and though it appears like he has embraced the club and country, has his wife?
Sometimes, you just know when a player is going to struggle and many have laughed at Ian Rush telling the world that living in Italy, was like living in a foreign country. Amusing, but somehow we know what he meant. I remember dismissing Fernando Llorente, as a viable strike option for Spurs, because I had heard so many stories that he was homesick, even when he was in his own country. Sure he might have changed and maturity and family stability opens minds, but the fact he has so far struggled to settle in Italy, may prove my initial thinking to be correct.
Whatever happens, it is fair to suggest that although some players settle down straight away, it certainly isn't a given. Different personalities and situations will make a transition easier or harder. Perhaps if Soldado had scored for fun or Lamela was playing well in every game, we would he talking about them in the way we have done about Eriksen and Paulinho, but so far it is yet to happen. From a clubs perspective, when you are paying players several million a year, you need and expect them to integrate very quickly and they will do everything in their power to help a player settle. Question is, that whatever you do, it can take time on and off the pitch and often without one, you don't get the other….
