It may not exactly be on the biggest stage, but tonight could see the return to favour of Emmanuel Adebayor.
Adebayor is in the squad for tonights underwhelming trip to Moldova and perhaps his potential start or cameo will be at least give us something to get excited about and for the short term at least, he could give us that Plan B that so many of us have felt was missing from our squad in terms of attacking threat. Dare I suggest that this could be the first opportunity for AVB to play two strikers, that offer contrasting strengths. Though Soldado and Defoe are not exact clones, they do share too many qualities and weaknesses to perhaps consider them as a partnership. Ade on the other hand offers something different.
This morning we read that Spurs are going all out for Villa's menacing Christian Benteke, no doubt with last weekends performance against us, strong in the minds Bet between now and that potential move, Emmanuel Adebayor has a chance to prove he is worthy of challenging for a starting spot or perhaps to put himself in the shop window for his own New Year move.
Though Ade has suffered the tragedy of a brother dying that is sure to unsettle anyone, he has also been his own worst enemy in terms of his lack of fight and apathetic attitude at times. Late last season, I actually felt he was playing well, but wasn't getting the support he needs, something that despite so many changes, seems to still be a problem. What will be interesting tonight if he gets the chance is whether Ade had the appetite to show the football world he still have the hunger to play.
On his day, Adebayor is a devastating opponent who is unplayable when he really gets amongst an opposition. Just like Didier Drogba in his prime or as we seem to be seeing with the emerging talents of Benteke and Lukaku, Ade is a player that frightens opposition with his size, speed and strength, attributes that offer so much. Problem is that without heart and a willing attitude they can be useless. Question what mindset will emmanuel Adebayor be in, if and when he gets his chance to play?..
