Sunderland vs Tottenham Hotspur.

You would be forgiven for thinking that Wednesday nights Premier League Match was actually a Cup Tie the way it was played. Really good match to watch but who wasn`t holding their breath for the last 26 minutes as the game could have swung either way? Still no goals from the striker but loads of chances!

The bottom line is we are making clear cut chances in front of goal but we are not taking them. Spurs conversion rate after the Newcastle United defeat stood at 4.4%, the worst in the Premier League. Spurs average a goal every 111 minutes. We share the same statistics as the bottom 3 clubs! Up until that Wet Spam and City result we had looked like AVB had concentrated on the back to make Spurs difficult to beat. That plan has been derailed because we can`t settle on a back four when Verts keeps having to cover the Left Back position. We need consistency. Our last 5 League results are all over the place. Sunderland at home are now a different proposition to the team at the beginning of their season with wins over Southampton and Manchester City and the goal fest on Wednesday. When Wes Brown and John O`Shea are paired together Sunderland normally keep clean sheets. Danny Rose was named Sunderland`s Young Player of the Season last season but he will not be back in time to feature in Saturday`s game.

So let`s talk combinations. I don`t think we have really settled on a side for home games or a side for away games because we have not agreed the main spine of the team. Many on here thought we should have kept the same side as drew with Manure and, true to form, we had three changes with Defoe, Capoue and Lamela playing at Fulham. I am beginning to like the Lennon and Walker combo on the right. I do like Holtby in the pocket with Paulinho and Sandro alternating the deeper positions with Paulinho going box to box. Curiously enough you would think that Sandro would have the highest tackle count but up until the City game it was Dembele.

It looks like Vert will be out which means Kaboul and Dawson could pair up and it would be interesting to see if AVB would put Chiriches in the left back position rather than Naughton? Lamela looks like he wants to play but he does keep coming in field so is he too much of a risk with a makeshift Left Back in place against Sunderland? We may be attacking Phil Bardsley at Left Back who is not the fastest so Lamela could cause him problems whilst Adam Johnson could also cause us problems with whoever we play on the left, especially Naughton.

Sunderland proved that they have plenty of belief after they fought back against a Chelsea side, whose defence it has to be said was pretty chronic. However, the Black Cats do face a Spurs teams whose away form is keeping us in the hunt.

Momentum! You remember that word? We created it at the end of last season and we nearly crossed the line, except Newcastle decided to lose at home to the Scum on the last day of the season! We have a run of games, and lot`s of them, in December, but so does everyone else, and it would be nice to say that our games are in the "we should win" category. That is why it is important for AVB to dig deep for players from the squad for the game on Thursday against Anzhi Makhachkala as its Liverpool, or should that be: Suarez FC, on Sunday. The following Wednesday its the League Cup Quarters against Wet Spam and then a tricky Southampton away!

So while all the clubs above us are about to slug it out with each other we have some lower half of the division teams to meet. Apart from Liverpool at home and Southampton away we go on a run that includes; Sunderland, Stoke and West Brom until we come to Manure on New Year`s Day at Old Trafford. We have to be honest and say that we have not quite found a balance to the side but the belief we showed against Manure and the way we came back at Fulham after they scored showed that we are developing character. The reaction of the players to AVB after the Fulham game was good to see too.

The Stadium of Light pitch is a good size and it`s a good surface, if we do play Lamela, Sandro will have to defend the left side of the pitch which means Holtby could play to provide some defensive duties like he did at Everton on Leighton Baines. Up until the midweek match Sunderland had created an average of 9 chances a game where as we are top of the possession and chances stats, which is why we are all probably so frustrated about the lack of goals upfront.

At the moment we are all settling for a result over performance just to get points and get a run going. But when you look at the Spurs side, and who we have brought in, we still play like an invitation 11. Perhaps the squad is too big! Perhaps we have too many options! Maybe we should build the team around a standard spine through the middle? But how do you get the mix right? Against Citeh our players were letting themselves get out of position which allowed Citeh to exploit the spaces left behind. At Fulham we played on a small pitch and that let Fulham close us down. Dembele has said that WHL is too small a pitch! Do we have players who like playing their football in a field rather than in a shoe box? Whatever the answer is we do not seem to be able to find that balance or combination and the more changes we make to the side for each game the more we will continue to search for that continuity.

We need to get a run going Tromso - Manure - Fulham - Sunderland? Two wins on the bounce would be more than good because we need confidence going into our next home game against Liverpool.

So who does AVB play on Saturday this time?

MAN ON!
Thanks Oyveh Maria…..I'll read it now.
MAN ON!
Obviously, without Jan, the back 4 will be different, but apart from sticking Kyle N at left back, I'd like to see the same team that played United……No doubt it'll be completely different….
MAN ON!
The biggest call for me is whether Dembele is fit to play or not. He is our lynch-pin imo, covers a lot of ground and as pointed out makes loads of tackles. Yes he can sometimes be caught in possession but who doesn't? Played with Sandro AND Paulinho he looks the business again. I like Holtby but I think the high line needs steel in MF to protect it.
Love totty
Come on Tottenham, give me 3 points for my birthday present, not asking for much am I.

Sunderland, only having won 2, are, of course, bottom of the table. But, managed to beat City and keep a clean sheet. This is a team that's conceded 28 against a team that has now scored 40! They then score 3 but loose 4 goals to Chelsea! How on earth does one predict results in the PL? We should win and I believe we will. We need to play with verve, pace and more confidence. It will probably be a tough game but we should win with ease…...
MAN ON!
Sunderland...expect Johnson and Fletcher back, they will have confidence after their goals against Chelsea so at some point during the game they'll come at us...whether that's from the off or second half I don't know but as they are at home we need to expect high pressing from the off....So keep the fullbacks closer, play Lennon to counter using his pace. Selection dilemma: Soldado or Defoe? I prefer Defoe from the bench but as he created chances he's done little to lose the starting spot but he doesn't score against Sunderland so Soldado for me...Verts is out so we need to shuffle at the back...I'd go for the right footed Naughton to counter the left footed inverted winger Johnson....Naughts is also quicker and more mobile (and better) than Fryers...Not sure what happened to Kaboul so it'll be Daws and Vlad at CB - who will need to be aware of the aerial threat of Fletcher...he's clever. Walker RB.....Central 3? Holtby adds urgency and after his goal and with Dembs struggling he comes in....I'd play him left, Pauli Right, Sandro sitting but will AVB stick him in the pocket? toss up on the left but as I expect them to come quickly at us I'd play Chadli for his power and defensive solidity.....so my team (The team that never plays) .........................Soldado.................... Chadli........Holtby........Pauli.......Lennon .........................Sandro...................... Naughton.....Vlad........Daws......Walker. .........................Lloris......................... Defoe, Lamela and Gylfi off the bench if we need Goals...Capoue can cover CM and CB in case of injury and if Kaboul is still missing AT can come on the run the ball into the corners if need that...;)
shedboy2
This will be a tough game but we have enough quality to do the business. After Sunderland scoring 3 goals the other night they will cause us problems but we should be too strong for them.
Kong
Good line up shed, I don't think it's going to far off the starting eleven. My only dilemma is Chadli or Lamela on the left, Lamela needs games but Chadli is phisycally stronger so probably the better bet for this one. COYS.

Happy Birthday Kong….King for a day!

shedboy2……Good line-up but, if fit, I would replace Holtby with Dembele.

So Jan Vertonghen is out. Another freak accident when landing, like Capoue and Sandro last season... The curse of ENIC strikes again! A major part of any successful team is luck on the injury front, something we get little of... Mind you it makes little difference if Vertonghen or Kaboul are fit anyway, because captain Dawson is the main man...
Pele10
MAN ON!-yep if Dembele is fit he comes in for me....well not me, holtby, I meant imo..;) Italian....it is a toss up between the two on the left, I would expect lamela to get on if he doesn't start...I just have a feeling they will come straight at us from the off to try and catch us cold...
shedboy2
KONG - Many happy returns, mate. I hope you have a wonderful day & that THFC can provide you with the present you REALLY want. Happy Birthday, my friend :-)
coopsieyid
Have a good one Kong!....
shedboy2
shedboy - I too would probably opt for Naughton against Johnson, for the very same reason you stated. It 'should' basically eliminate Johnson's 'strength', ie his left foot, and, if I remember correctly, Naughton marked him the last time we played and he coped well enough for us to get a win?
coopsieyid
Pele10, Do you blame the (evil) ENIC for the Tottenham riots?
MAN ON!
Pele - Please, for the love of God, TURN IT IN & stop chatting BOLLOX. Now injuries are ENIC's fault. Grow up FFS!!

Apologies to other members for my aggression, but that's a ******** pathetic post.
coopsieyid
Italian- I think if Dembele is fit it becomes more of dilemma...in that case Lamela could just shade it to start....demebele brings more solidity but less passing...trade off more passing from lamela with less solidity.....but Lamela would have to be told to stick left as much as possible...

Lamela.............Pauli..............Lennon

All my fault the article is later that usual! Been a v busy week… Here is your article Coops. Posted just for you ;-) So, a trip to The Stadium of Light for our beloved THFC today, though they probably travelled up yesterday, so there is no trip today at all. What a waste of time that line was. The game? Well it'll be 90 minutes long, with some injury time added to the end of each 45 minute half, probably. AVB will pick totally the wrong team, though it will also be totally the right team. And my consistency is sometimes questioned on here? Vertonghen is out, it's '"too soon for Rose", so we'll either see Fryers given a start, or we'll see KiriKesh played there, with, I'd imagine, Kaboul coming in to play alongside Dawson. Then again, maybe Naughton will be the left-back, whilst KiriKesh plays alongside Dawson again? Or maybe KiriKesh will play alongside ?Kaboul, with Naughton at left-back? Either way, it's easy to see that AVB's decision will be a piece of cake, though it'll be a bloody hard one to make. See, more consistency!! The midfield will be made up of either, 3, 4 or 5 different players, whilst upfront will have a striker, or maybe 2 strikers? Heck we may even see 3 strikers. How much fun would that be? Oh, we don't have 3 strikers. Bugger!! Of course, behind all of those players, will be the ever dependable Hugo Lloris, although he's seemingly not as dependable as some of us believe, if recent article responses are to be believed. So I guess it'll be Grandpa Friedel in goal then, or ! Archer, but most likely Lloris, if he's selected, which he should be, probably, because he's our best 'keeper, apart from when he's not, sometimes!! So, there you go. That's exactly how AVB will go about his business for this evenings match. Hope you are able to enjoy the game, I'm sure you'll think you can select a better team than the one I have, though I haven't selected one, so good luck with that. Remember, we are Tottenham Hotspur, we are the 'YID ARMY', though they're actually the 'Tottenham Ultras', so we're more like the "YID 2nd reserve batallion who have no interest in violence, and don't condone such things when it comes to football'..... COYS a win at Sunderland and we'll be right back in the mix, here's to an unbeaten December!

Pele- you can't blame ENIC for injuries, you could blame them for not buying a LB though...we were strongly linked with Coentrao so we must have known we needed one... I don't think it would have been hard to find one on Roses level or above...Same with a Striker. Still we'll see if they learn in Jan or we get another Nelson type squad player (so much for continuous improvement if that's the case)....
shedboy2
Thinking about it, I'm now not sure about who should play up top. I want Soldado to kickstart his season, but thought that Defoe played okay at Fulham, linking up well with our attacking midfielders, in and around the box. Who'd be a manager eh?
MAN ON!
Didn't even put spaces in Ox, very disappointed indeed, especially as I took the time to do just that. You're dropped, bring back Spursex lol

Cheers everyone, am enjoying the presents now until Tottenham deliver me the 3 points :). Not sure about being King for the day, still getting told what to do from the wife and kid :). I read an article that AVB mentioned that he feels Lanela is better on the left as things are not going well for him on the right. Him or chadli on the left for me.
Kong
Man on - yep tricky one Defoe hasn't done anything to be dropped...I just went on that he doesn't score against Sunderland...so perhaps he should be in as all those records have to be broken some time!...;) For AVB it comes down to managing the personalities...and that's harder than coaching or team selection imo...

With Vertonghen out tactics come into play. If I was Poyet and Johnson was facing Naughton I would tell him to forget about cutting in and go past him on the outside every time. Like Townsend Johnson can use both feet and if you have a full back playing on the wrong side trying to cut in is exactly what he wants you to do. Depending on how Johnson plays, Naughton could be taken apart or have a comfortable game. Incidentally we can moan about bad luck in the left back position, but whose idea was it to start the season with only one premier standard left back ?
jod
exactly Jod...it's not bad luck, it's bad planning.
shedboy2
one thing is for sure, Lennon on the right touchline holding the width and trying to run beyond in behind his fullback causes teams problems. Townsend would cause similar problems on the left.
spurs-stelios
.........................Soldado.................... Sigurdsson.........Lamela.............Lennon ...................Sandro.....Holtby.............. Andros..........Vlad........Daws......Walker.
spurs-stelios
I honestly think Townsend would make a great attacking LB/Wingback. would be immense on the overlap crossing 1st time with his best foot. he has played this position many times in his youth career
spurs-stelios
jod…Johnson is very inconsistent these days but can still cause problems when on form. I think Naughton is up to the job. Only thing is he has not played a lot recently, so if Kaboul plays, maybe stick Vlad on the left?
MAN ON!
A few line-ups from elsewhere...

Lloris

Walker Kaboul Chiriches Fryers

Sandro Dembele (Holtby)

Lennon Lamela Chadli

Soldado

Balance, pace on the counter and creativity. Would consider Holtby for Dembele if his hip is still a problem. Would agree that Paulinho needs a rest. Chadli provides balance and protection for Fryers. Lennon hasn't played so many games this season, so should be fresh and recent performances merit another start. Lamela has to start. I really want him to make no:10 his own while Eriksen is out and he needs game time.
coopsieyid
Would still like to see a 4-3-3, though.

Lloris

Walker, Kaboul, KiriKesh, Naughton

Sandro, Capoue, Holtby

Lamela, Soldado, Chadli.....
coopsieyid
spurs-stelios….I think there's good reason why Andros hasn't played left back for a while. He can't tackle!
MAN ON!
Coopsie you appear to have picked our best team when no one else can are you God? :-)
keefdayid
MAN ON! You ask me, "Do you blame the (evil) ENIC for the Tottenham riots?" Of course not! But I do feel that it is a total disgrace that Joe Lewis instructed Levy to waste 2 years of the stadium project whilst Levy appealed against the governments decision for THFC to contribute 16 million to the local community redevelopment funding. Levy won the appeal and saved Joe Lewis the paltry sum of 16 million! The guy pays no tax in the UK and stands to make himself 500 million plus when he sales up THFC and yet was not prepared to give 16 mil back to one of the poorest areas in London, and right now he is buying up every little bit of land he can close to the stadium, and he is transferring THFC's ownership of the land to his offshore companies in the Bahamas in preparation for the big sale. He is milking THFC and the local community... So what goes around comes and around, which is why I believe we have been so riddled with such bad luck since Sugar and Lewis have owned THFC...
Pele10
no not the last one the earlier and long rambling one (damn this system that doesn't automatically update)
keefdayid
We have 7 points on our last three meetings at Stadium of Light!

Last season we played a 442 formation with Naughton at the left back, he earned a 7,5 points score after the game.
coopsieyid
Oh and Townsend played at LB a few times for QPR, so he could be an option there today. MAYBE he'd not take so many fecking shots from back there, maybe!!
coopsieyid
MAN ON! he cant shoot either but that doesn't seem to deter him from 10 attempts a game. 90% of games we are in control of the ball anyway so the fact he cant tackle that well is irrelevent at LB he would be perfect for giving us width on the left side when everything in the middle is congested and we keep going from side to side until we lose possession.
spurs-stelios
This was posted yesterday afternoon.....

"Bentaleb just tweeted that he's 'en route to Sunderland' - so he might make the squad? Unless he's just travelling or the u21s have a game or something".......
coopsieyid
Wow Pele10 do you have proof of these allegations or is this idle speculation and malicious rumours ?
keefdayid
Let's hope Avb /spurs are up for this difficult trip. A great win here, puts THFC right back on track for champions league qualification possibility.
82spursdebut
And this was the first response to that.......

"Must be going to team because no U21 match I could see, but why would he be travelling?"
coopsieyid
Pele10….With respect Pele, I don't give a damn! Why? Because I don't believe any big business' behaves in any other way. Sad but true.
MAN ON!
the only danger we have against us in most games in on the counter attack as all inferior teams park the bus and look to hit us on the break. at least Andros would be quick enough to get back as is Walker
spurs-stelios
coopsieyid, He was on the bench for one of our EL games. Could it be that Dembele and Capoue are not fit? Or Paulinho is being rested?
MAN ON!
MAN ON! You should read up the history of how the Arsenal board conducted themselves when they built the Emirates. What they gave back to the local community. Then have a look at the stadium they provided their supporters and the current League table...
Pele10
spurs-stelios….I've nothing against Andros and even suggested him at left back myself, earlier in the season. But that was as a last resort. I have no problem with Naughton there or indeed, Vlad.
MAN ON!
spurs-stelios….Also, I don't think that Sunderland will bark the bus. Poyet is more attack minded, they're at home and need 3 points.
MAN ON!
Pele10, I have no interest whatsoever in how the Gooners go about their business.
MAN ON!
either way it will never happen, think AVB will go with Naughton
spurs-stelios
…..Just a minute ago I had to turn the volume down on my TV when on Football Focus they featured the Gooners! :)
MAN ON!
spurs-stelios……..You never know with AVB!
MAN ON!
…..bark the bus?
MAN ON!
I should not have read all the posts first; you've all said everything. Play Soldado (he really needs to score). Play Dawson tonight but not against Liverpool). Play Paulinho in the hole, Play Misty for me (sorry, wrong thread). Lloris...Walker...Kaboul...Dawson...Chiriches...Sandro...Holtby...Paulinho...Lennon...Lamala...Soldado. 3-0 COYS
Geofspurs
What's that? Clint Eastwood in the hole!?
MAN ON!
MAN ON!, you say "I have no interest whatsoever in how the Gooners go about their business." Sadly for us neither does Joe Lewis , which is why our two big London rivals have totally dominated us since ENIC have owned our club. You Always need to keep an eye on your competition. After all, your competition and their success will actually have a huge impact on the success of your own business. This is the golden rule in every business! Sadly for us the owner of our club is not in the football business, but in the business of buying and selling business's, which is why he does not give a damn about AFC and CFC having dominated us on the pitch for so long. He is only concern is the great THFC tax free, offshore sale! Sad but true...
Pele10
Like your confidence Geofspurs but I think we should go with 11 players...;)
shedboy2
Townsend left back...sounds good to me..;)....perhaps the Anzhi game for trying new things and kids..it really is like having a pre-season friendly....

I'm a football fan and first and foremost a THFC supporter. I don't have enough brain space to contemplate the ins and outs of the high finance of the game. I'll leave that to you Pele…..

Pele10 - If £16m is "paltry" you must have a hell of a lot of cash, maybe you should buy the club yourself, or is money only no object when its someone elses ? It would help if you could get your accounting right. Apart from the £16m , there is £8m in transport improvements now coming from public funds but the big change was the removal of the requirement to provide social housing. What this is worth will only be known when the houses are sold but its likely to be a hell of a lot more than any of the other changes to the planning approval.

Today is a good chance for us to start putting a run together. We have to be bold, play with tempo and pace and not be scared to play with a bit of flair and freedom. We need to build some confidence in our own ability to win CONVINCINGLY. Grinding out wins keeps the points ticking over but doesn't really build confidence. I ask a quick question; who will be more confident after their midweek performance? Us or Liverpool? Winning with confidence and a swagger builds confidence faster.

Just came across a brilliant post, it truly should, in my opinion, be EXACTLY how all 'supporters' should be thinking & feeling.........

I've been tossing and turning my love/hate relationship with AVB too.

But - he does need time and players like Lamela (21), Erikson (21) Chadli (24), Capoue (25), Paulhino (25), Chirches (24) & Holtby (23) are still incredibly young and green for the Premier league. Only Soldado (28) would and should have been ready for this league in terms of experience.

If AVB has the players behind him and they believe in him and he is given the time to blend, what is, obvious talent into "his" team over the next couple of seasons (see Wenger example and the abuse he got) - then we could really be a force for the future.

I too am impatient, hate most of the football we've played this season and want us to be better now and not to got through this transitional phase - but if the board and the players and AVB stick with it and these newbies adapt to life in the Premier League and in the UK and become a real team - we could become very very good indeed.

If we don't stick with it, go with the knee jerk and start all over again from scratch…what will become of us? Is there anther manager out there that could blend so many newcomers into an effective and attractive team after 14 games? I doubt it.

If you go for the Redknapp solution again - he'll instantly bring in the tried and tested premier league players - we've done that, been there and that took us only so far…I want us to go further…one step back and all that!

COYS!

tophobunty1882
And another brilliant post, this one in response to the supposed "AVB has 7 games to save his job, after meeting with board" story....

" I sincerely hope there was no such meeting between Board and AVB.

If our Board actually thinks the best way to get AVB (anyone) to perform is to

(a) reassess his position after one bad month (cf our record points tally last season and financial backing of him in the summer)

(b) give him a ridiculously arbitrary number of games to win (as if he wouldn't want to win them anyway)

(c) expect instant results from a complete rebuilding of a squad stripped of its talisman (cf - he didn't want to sell Bale and rebuild from scratch).

(d) ignore the "net" spending position (ie focus on the 110 spent and not the player(s) sold)

(e) expect players who were surely bought for the long term (ie an actual investment, and not just a luxury toy), who are young and full of potential (nb potential) to produce instant results and never have a down period

then I am worried about their leadership

It's particularly poor judgment since AVB has a year on his contract. If he does turn this around and secure us CL football or a Cup (or even the League!) then why would he necessarily stick around if PSG or Real Madrid come knocking again - when he has seen how quickly he might be out of a job if results go against him.

Don't get be wrong - I think we are struggling at the moment. But hauling AVB in to tell him to "do better" is not going to change anything. We back him and we see where we end up.

Oh, and comparisons to the Scum don't bear scrutiny. (a) They spent far more than we did this Season (net) and (b) they stuck with their manager when his side was struggling"...........
coopsieyid
Coopsie, are you call me a racist? I think we might need to think seriously about things on here now.
tophobunty1882
See UTD are struggling kind of takes the shine of the MAN U result, tough game to call today, if Sunderland are pumped I can see us struggling today. Hopefully the lads will have the momentum from Fulham, I'd be happy with a scrappy 1-0 nil victory today,I cant see it being the game to play 'pretty' football.

I don't always agree with Coopsie but his last post was dead right. I was a Harry fan and disappointed when he left - we will never know what might have been if a few bob had been spent at the right time. However, we have to move on and give AVB the time to blend all the new players into a team. Sure, I am not keen on the conservative style he adopts but it is foolish to expect free-flowing elegant football from a group of players who hardly know each other (and speak various languages). Familiarity will help them to breed confidence in each others' abilities and, hopefully, begin to produce the kind of football that all Tottenham fans like to see. If it doesn't work I have no doubt that a change will be made but a dozen or so games into a season of enormous change in personnel is far to soon to be critical of the manager, the team or the board. The numerous different views on team selection on this site (all from committed supporters) only serves to illustrate how difficult it is to arrive at the right combinations.

Have you listened to the Pardew interview after the match? The most important pozitive for him from today was that he tried a different strategy and it worked, and now he is happy that they have 2 different ways of playing and the opposition won't be able to know in advance what they will play. Also I think he did some attacking subs today. Nice job sir. Points well earned.

Maybe off subject but, leading on from Pele's post, it will be interesting to see what happens if the Chancellor does make the changes to the non-residents Capital Gains Tax legislation proposed in the recent Autumn Statement. One or two foreign owners may try to sell to avoid the 28% tax.

Thanks, Coopsie. Been reading this site for ages but only just started to get involved. Love the passion for our club - we might have many different opinions but on one thing we agree - COYS!
Dennis Silverton
Of course, you may not want to watch it. So, if you don't, or if you miss it, here's a summary of how Defoe will get on.....

They'll almost certainly ask him about why he doesn't get more game time and how he feels about it and whether he wants to move and he'll almost certainly have to give the same type of response he always does i.e. "of course its frustrating, I just wanna play but I love the club and I always work hard." Then they'll centre around England and the World cup and whether he needs to be playing every week to get to the tournament, to which he'll say, "I love the club, i love the supporters, but if I'm not playing enough, I'll have to look at my options because I want to be on that plane to the World Cup"....

There you go, don't say I never do anything for you, I've just provided you with a glimpse of the future ;-). As for Townsend, hopefully he'll say nothing, because he'll be out in the yard, practicing his shooting with that 'hole in the wall thing' they use on Soccer AM ;-)

By the way, for those individuals who believe the likes of Holtby, Lamela, Soldado etc, are failures, not good enough etc.. I would like to add a few more players to our list of so called failures: until not long ago many Gooner fans couldn't wait to get rid of, amongst others, Szczesny, Mertesacker, Giroud...and Ramsey, a player even booed by certain fans..... Then there's this article,

http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/dismissing-tottenhams-erik-lamela-useless-2889332?

I'm copy & pasting the whole story, because I know that some people can't be bothered to copy & paste any provided link.....

Why dismissing Tottenham's Erik Lamela as 'useless' is quite simply ridiculous

4 Dec 2013 16:31

The Argentine youngster is a young player trying to learn a new language in a new league, he was never going to settle in overnight, writes Darren Lewis

Thierry Henry scored just two goals in his first 17 matches at Arsenal.

Luka Modric was voted one of the worst signings at Real Madrid last season.

As recently as October 28 this year, Madrid's Gareth Bale was labelled 'a mistake' and 'irrelevant' by the Spanish press.

In fact, Bale himself took around two years - including that record 24 league matches for Spurs without being on the winning side - to settle in at White Hart Lane after moving from as far away as Southampton.

There is precedent and a long history of players in football looking a bit hooky after making high-profile moves - then proving to be the business once they've got their feet under the table.

We all know it. We've seen it a gazillion times.

Which is why this dismissal of Erik Lamela as "useless" is simply ridiculous.

The Argentine is 21. He is playing in a new League in a new country. He hasn't yet learned English and he is getting to grips with the pace of our game.

How can ANYONE assess him on the basis of one Premier League start and four substitute appearances all season?

Its funny. We in this country like to dismiss other clubs in other Leagues around the world as being bonkers and impatient over the way that they conduct their business.

But we over here are just as bad. If not worse.

There was a quiet storm of indignation from more than a few Spurs fans on Sunday ahead of the 2-2 draw with Manchester United. They were angry that Lamela had not been included in the starting line-up to face United.

But just as fortress Manchester City away was not the best place to hand him his first Premier League start (Villas Boas would probably now concede that in his private moments) resurgent United would have been tough a test for him as he tries to get his feet under the table.

He'll cope soon enough. But AVB is trying to ease him into his career at Tottenham.

Every club has a player like Lamela. Talented and needing time, but harshly and prematurely judged as results go awry and reason goes out of the window.

Spurs Director of Football Franco Baldini knows from his time at Roma the calibre of player that he has on his hands.

In the meantime, Lamela should get himself some DVDs of Henry, Modric and Bale to see that their quality always rises to the top in the end....................

Sorry if someone else has previously posted that article (or the link to it). I was just AMAZED that Darren Lewis was capable of such understanding. I'm almost certain that there'll be at least 1 member who appears on here and says "more excuses" or "Excuse number 27500" etc etc.
coopsieyid
Good article you copied and pasted coopsie, many players have taken a while to settle here, lamela won't be the last, patience is the key here, I feel he will be a special player.
Kong
He REALLY is getting better. If you've got a spare 3 minutes, take a look at this little compilation that I came across, of Lamela in the Fulham game. Watch how it starts, then watch how he gets better & better (more confident?) as the game goes on. And the cherry on top of the cake = the very last bit of him in the clip, a wonderful 'take down' after a 50 yard ball from Dawson, followed by 3 defenders being bamboozled, and 5 defenders being pulled directly to him personally. See for yourselves - http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Hbyc0kX0ki0
coopsieyid
coopsieyid, It all seems so blatantly obvious to me, and there are numerous other examples of players and managers that have taken plenty of time to prove themselves. Our lot have already shown glimpses of what their capable of. It does take time for a team to bond, and only then do individuals start to shine in their own right.

Coopsie, excellent posts on the "AVB meeting with the board". I sometimes despair at the Spurs board, anyone ever seen Levy wearing a Spurs scarf or getting even mildly excited when we win. The board seem concerned only about short term returns. "Its all about Glory" should be replaced by "Its all about Money". Lets hope that the board meeting was carried out in an friendly atmosphere and not just a threat to AVB's position

I'm not sure if Ox will be able to put it on site, but hopefully the fact that I started the article with "This is NOT my article" and went on to credit the actual writer, and the paper he works for, will mean it'll be perfectly OK for Ox to put it up. KiriKesh has a knee injury, we all know about Vertonghen's ankle, whilst Kaboul, in my opinion, seems broken beyond repair. Once again, not even in the squad. Don;t really see what more AVB could've done with the back line? With so many 'key players' being injured at the same time, playing Fryers would be a MONUMENTALLY MASSIVE RISK. Even Capoue is more experienced than him in defence, so as crazy as the selection looks, I can understand it
coopsieyid
Interesting line-up. Looks like we have Kaboul, Vertonghen and Chiriches out at the same time. If Dawson gets his 5th yellow today that could turn out to be an even bigger crisis. I would still play Fryers at LB.
muttley
I am happy with capoue in defence, not the first time he has played there in his career. Is a good cover to have. Naughton will be fine, getting excited now, 30 mins left.
Kong
If i'm not mistaken Capoue played thier for his previous club. He certainly has all the attributes for that position but for obvious reasons he looked off the pace against fulham.

Geofspurs
When you have a makeshift defence, you'd expect a player like Sandro to start.. he is the best defensive shield in the squad after all!
Guyver
Might've been that 120 mins he played in the cup, Kaboul... Maybe he felt the strain after that and they're being careful with his recovery. Still hopeful he'll be back to his usual self, eventually.
ledders77
I presume sandro is also not risked for a good reason, with chiriches, kaboul and verts out you would expect sandro in there to cover. lennon and defoe can combine well, but I hope soldado gets some minutes today. with this back line this is a big ask though
Guernman
You have to love the PL! Unpredictable results every week….
MAN ON!

From now on, whenever I read through the ranting & raving, howling and frothing, that follows every team selection, I'm going to think about the one match this season where virtually everyone here, before kick-off, was thrilled with AVB's selected line-up:

Manchester City 6 Tottenham 0

:-)
coopsieyid
Sunderland going 2/4/4/2. Chiriches injured, rose injured, verts injured. I'm worried about the back line but at least Sunderland don't look like attacking. Be set plats for them. They are not just parking a bus, but a plane!! 9 behind the ball!!! I hope we can get through. Other results( bar the pool) did us a lot of favours!
Dublin Hotspur
If you play Sandro from the start u risk injuring him. Would be his 3rd game this week and he's still not 100%
ledders77
And didn't Paulinho and Dembélé start as the two holding midfielders against Norwich? That game was probably one of our best performances of the season.

Anyway, at first, I thought not playing Sandro to protect this makeshift defence is suicidal. BUT, Sunderland are playing 2 up front, so AVB must be thinking we're going to win the midfield battle pretty comfortably and so wants three more attacking CMs to carve them open. Feeling better about the lineup now!
coopsieyid
The team selection is fine, I am not loving it tho based on coopsie's post about the man city game :). Rather question the selection and get the 3 points, AVB is consistent, likes rotation.

Dublin Hotspur
May the Gel be with you, where ever you are guys!. Enjoy! COYS!br>
ps., hold the negativity back 'til the 95 mins. We will win!!!
Critical_Spur
To be fair, look at the class our team / bench holds over the sunderland team / bench!! we have to go destroy them!!
Dublin Hotspur
Vlad, Verts, Rose, Kaboul all injured, Is Dawson going into this game one yellow away from a one match ban? The only defender on the bench is Fryers, still keeping positive and attack will see us through this one, one of the joys of supporting THFC, you never know from one game to the next, anything can happen.
spu 4 life
To be fair, Holtby has linked up with, and found Defoe extremely well in a few of our Europa matches. Maybe that's his thinking today?
coopsieyid
these guys pointing out that we are the team with the least amount of goals scored from the box (5)... in the whole league. top 4 teams have at least 20 of those. interesting
logos8
at least if we lose today we wont be hearing from that numpty chav HGH MAGIC lol
spurs-stelios
hopefully that his dispels the myth of our strong squad...Levy get your cheque book out!...Verts turned his ankle flying down the wing as a LB!
shedboy2
snappp coops
spurs-stelios
May the gel be with us! COYS
logos8
We only have Liverpool and Suarez next week so if Dawson gets his 5th yellow card, we need our cb's to recover by next week.
Kong
Come on Spurs!!!! Let's dooo this!!!
ledders77
Dublin - Thanks fella. You KNOW that I actually take pleasure out of, hopefully, providing something that benefits the site. I'll continue to do just that, until Ox informs me that I must stop.

spurs-stelios, Seems great AND deluded minds think alike ;-) lol
coopsieyid
COYS! Let's make this the Stadium of Lilywhite!
MAN ON!
once again just goes to show that you can take nothing for granted this season. every week 3 or 4 of the top 4 candidates drop points even when they seem nailed on to win. fair play to Arsenal, so far they are doing there job against the lower teams well.
spurs-stelios
Started the season one striker and one central defender short. Will be a great result, if we win.
82spursdebut
Enjoy the game everyone, well try to enjoy it anyway. COYS
Kong
Gotta go soon :-(. I won't start watching the match until 6pm, so I'll obviously need to avoid here until I've watched it.
coopsieyid
No defenders on the bench (apart from Fryers)... That's odd, isn't it??
alee
Enjoy all…….Up the Spurs!
MAN ON!
Remember boys & Girls, 12-0 and we go 5th :-) COYS. And as Kong said, enjoy the game, or at least try to enjoy it..... COYS
coopsieyid
alee - It'd only be odd if those who are missing from the bench weren't injured. They are, so NO mate, it's not at all odd :-)
coopsieyid
Just quickly, I wouldn't be surprised if AVB puts Sandro on for Paulinho at HT and gives them both 45 minutes, both must be very tired.
coopsieyid
Kaboul and Chireches are BOTH injured!? News to me. Coops :/
alee
Having chiriches and verts out is really a massive setback. But the lads coming in for them is solid enough so not that worried. Maybe capoue can use this game to cement a starting spot in the team. C0YSSSS!!!!
neymar
Any good links, Front row is a bit rough at the moment? Too cheap to subscribe to sky
Slurms McKenzie
I cannot work out what AVB's trying to do with this team. Tedious in the extreme. It's like a relegAtion 6 pointer
jonathan01
Jono01 Spurs are very much lacking in confidence, hence the tentative approach, Sunderland have had a real boost with their performance against the chavs so I expect we will have to weather an early Sunderland storm before we squeeze them out of the game in the last half hour. Still recovering from the City hiding so not loosing is the first aim, three points and suddenly we have seven points from our last three games and we're back in the hunt. I guess we have to be patient and let the rebuilding continue?
Slurms McKenzie
@slurms http://nutjob.eu/njtvx26.html lots of pop-ups tho
Conan_the_Spur
Thanks Conan, but I'll pass on the pop-ups, I must be the only dude on the internet who's actually happy with the length of his knob and gets enough "action" at home!
Slurms McKenzie
Coopsie - lol about the 12 nil! That 9-1 seems so long ago, even the. Manager of that team has gone on to better things while ours got the sack. Funny ol game aint it?
neymar
i support AVB and what he is trying to do ..except... why does he change the team every game (injuries apart)......a team cant "gel" together when they never play two games together?...... we need 3 points today, so play two up top surely, its sunderland after all...............
micky58
Right feck me Chadli off. Switch Lennon to left and get Townsend on. Let's get at them for feckssake. Then they can switch throughout the match!!
Jocka101
You have got all goal opened in front of you and you shoot straight into a static defender. Great.
Moscovite
That left back position has really cost us this season - Naughton has no left foot and his passes often puts the receiver under pressure...oops!
Durbanspur
Lloris is at his usual. And Naughton is a better defender than Fryers. Of course.
Moscovite
Well there's only one person to blame for that goal.
muttley
Oh dear Loris
Big Ron
hugo just catch the feckin ball , to feckin slow pick up the pace spurs
ledleygomez
Apart from the City game I can't remember a clean goal scored against us. ALL came as a result of our own silly defensive errors.
Moscovite
we looked like the better team, bossing things around, creating chances. Unfortunate to concede. Hopefully we can turn it around. Let's win it, the Spurs way. COYS
logos8
Too slow again, sideways. We all knew it was coming
mattspurs1982
sheesh, here we go again.............. if we had a left back verts would,nt be injured and would have been in the middle to clear that. and a left back would have stopped the cross, NAUGHTON IS NOT A LEFT BACK AVB, wake up
micky58
Get Gomes back would not no the diff coys
bazdog
WTF was that I am afraid Loris is becoming a liability after his head injury. We clearly and not in the same class as the top 4 at the moment I am afraid. This is poor
markyboy40
Ouch...here we go again... Bummer
neymar
Mistake from Lloris :-(
Madaboutspurs
And this is crappy Sland. Rock bottom of the league. Says it all how mediocre Tottenham have become. The game is being played at a walking pace. Embarrassing really.
Moscovite
Our dribbling is rather poor
mattspurs1982
yeeeeees
ledleygomez
Pauli come on,
markyboy40
Nice anticipation from Paulinho.
muttley
The midweek game repeats itself. Have to come from behind again.
neymar
PAULIIIIIII! NOW 4 MORE!!
Dublin Hotspur
Get in! Set pieces but I don't care. The Brazilian does the job beautifully. Let's get the 3 points! COYS
logos8
What's up with Lloris? Celebrating lucky draw for France at WC?
Moscovite
left defence is so weak!!
Dublin Hotspur
Paulinhooooooooo!!!!!!!
neymar
A bit of resilience creeping into our game heads don't drop and we just get back to bossing the game, poor mistake from hugo but after is heroics this season he's earned a bit of slack...
Slurms McKenzie
LLoris made a mistake, $hit happens and every GK makes a few each season, the more worrying thing is our snail-like pace when we have the ball.
spurfect one
remember the good old days when we kept clean sheets, one by the odd goal and no-one ways happy? Is this better now? we can't keep clean sheets but at least we've started scoring - well everyone but our strikers. Guess I'll have to settle for 1-3 Spurs
Slurms McKenzie
Still think Andros on for Naughton would do the trick. team would be more Balanced and help us break quicker
spurs-stelios
Henestly this is so depressing. Having a makeshift defence shouldn't matter a jot against this lot. Finger out time.
Love totty
Chadli's been better tonight, can credit him with the assist and nearly scored with two other headers too, he looks a real threat in the air!
stu_u2k
Spurs-stel you want Townsend at LB??
Slurms McKenzie
spurs-stelios you want Andros at Left Back! Really?!
stu_u2k
It started 0-0 we had a point, first half has ended 1-1 we have a point. When we move the ball forward quicker, we look dangerous, that's what we must continue to do, getting in front at the stadium of shi7e has to happen in the first 20mins, then we can press on and win this 3 or 4 one.
spu 4 life
Love this lot put three past chav-ski mid week!
Slurms McKenzie
It's my fault! I spent yesterday bigging up Lloris. I must stop praising our players! One decent set piece from many, and we score!
MAN ON!
Yes Spu we could be three points off second by the clos of business today - mental! Snap stu
Slurms McKenzie
The gel is starting to work. We should be flying in the second half... of the season. I am confident we can get the 3 points today too... COYS

Man-on set-pieces have been shocking. Corners from the right not beating first man happens to many times not to be the plan????
Slurms McKenzie
Naughton is doing alright…….
MAN ON!
Slurms McKenzie I think all those 3 goals were from set pieces

Man on, i wrote an article yesterday declaring my man love for LLoris, never again lol.
spurfect one
I'd have Sandro on for Holtby now, at 45 mins'.
82spursdebut
I'm confident for the next 45+…….Lamela anyone?
MAN ON!
Sir Alex would often use Antonio Valencia at RB. similar players in my opinion. he started out as a LB i personally think he could do us a job there.
spurs-stelios
It aint gonna happen, spurs-stelios…………Come on Spurs!
MAN ON!
is dawson really that stupid
ledleygomez
ledleyg - do we really need to answer that?

Great play by Dembele.

spurs-stelios
Well played Dembele!
MAN ON!
You would never know we scored. This was probably the most silent goal in football history.

Every team needs a bit of luck - sorry Gus!
Durbanspur
We're back. Mighty spurs are back. The mighty gelled spurs. Europa League watch out! lol
logos8
That's better. Nicely done dembele
neymar
Lucky goal but nothing wrong, that's what happens when you push and don't follow a predictable formula - nice one - more of the same please - less predictability - VIVA expression
Cape Town Spurs
I like Defoe but he just doesn't score goals - what is with that - it's like he wants it too much
Cape Town Spurs
You'd think pensioners are playing. You can literally walk in to the S-land box. Their legs are gone. What a *****ty team.
Moscovite
Very unlucky not to be 3, Chadli's is making a massive argumaent for MOTM so far today!
stu_u2k
Looking dangerous in the final third... repeatedly..... everyone looks like they are reading from the same script.... Our best game of the season!!!! COYS!!!
alee
Is this PL or a charity match? The pace is slower than in the training.
Moscovite
Pleeeaase sign that left back in Jan. Not another game with Naughton there.
Durbanspur
You know that all this wastefulness and inability to capitalise means only one thing: we'll be put under the cosh in the last 10 minutes.
Moscovite
Oh jermaine..
Moscovite
*****, how can you miss that?
Durbanspur
we gonna concede standardly whilst not takin any of these chances...unlucky defoe
TaxiforMaicon
WTF Defoe is terrible why oh why is he playing, today Saldado would of got a few. Defoe is simply not good enough. I give up with AVB
markyboy40
C'mon Avb , get some fresh legs on!
Durbanspur
That was a stonewall pen! It must be our lucky day!
Durbanspur
finally we create a few genuine chances foe the striker and its bloody defoe not soldado who would have buried them
Guernman
Just like I said Spurs are already sitting deep and inviting pressure. Saw that coming from a mile away. Would anyone be surprised by late equaliser?
Moscovite
Give initiative away and this is what you get. You only get what you deserve.
Moscovite
The Holtby sub makes sense. The guy has run himself into the ground. We can now use Chadli's height inside and have Lennon and Townsend wide.
muttley
townsend makes a chance already from the left. 10 seconds in
spurs-stelios
What game are you watching Moscow?
Durbanspur
We've been wasteful in front of goal again today.
muttley
We are so wasteful it is gping to end 2:2. Is defoe now the future and avb hasx given up on soldado. This is a game that would have bosted his confidence.
iwear#10
Ref is trying to make up for them for the pen decision. Blatant foul on Walker.
Moscovite
Good game. Good win.
MAN ON!
Wasted far too many chances. For me, Soldado before Defoe every day of the week!
Durbanspur
What a performance by Capoue at centre half though. Considering it's not his natural position and Dawson is notoriously bad to partner with, I thought he was imperious today.
muttley
It's party time, best present ever, COYS
Kong
We got the same number of points at the stadium of shi7e as the chavs all THREE, will done guys SUPER YIDS.

Kong go and CELEBRATE, HAPPY BIRTHDAY.
spu 4 life
Well, I'm well chuffed. We won, we played our best football of the season, we were attractive to watch! Little bit disappointed with Defoe but at the end of the day he did no worse than what Soldado would have likely done and we didn't pay for his misses. Team look like they are reading from the same page. COYS!
alee
Walker and Lennon were great…... Celebrate everyone, 3 good points! I'm happy, are you?
MAN ON!
Kong…..Enjoy yourself!
MAN ON!
Great second half performance, top marks to all our defence, got the job done. Great result.
Kong
I am very happy with the win, but why oh why do we keep play Defoe. I am pretty sure if Saldado had been on the score line would be different. We had 24 shots today, I thought Paulinho was our MOTM.
markyboy40
It feels like the good old days. Winning ways, plenty of chances, entertaining stuff and what's even better is that we are improving game by game.
logos8
much better from Townsend when he came on....more like it!
shedboy2
Hey, Defoe played well!
MAN ON!
My MOTM is CAPOUE, did everything asked of him, with no fuss and looked calm under pressure, solid performance.
spu 4 life
Much better from the team, some faster football. what a pass by Holtby, Defoe should have scored a hatrick today. Imagine what will happen when we really click. I do get nervous with Dawson at the back, however he made one vital clearance. Good result, 22 attempts only 5 on target says it all really.. shooting practice boys.
philbill
Great result, should not have set back tho, made me bite all my nails lol.......... would like to see verts and capouee in back four, and give daws a rest,...he has the heart, but lacks vital bit of pace to get himself out of trouble
micky58
defoe needs to be dropped, should have had as easy a hatrick as he ever scored. soldado would have had a bag full. In any case we actually created real chances today not just statistical ones. We looked much better. Lennon was great on the right and townsend looked so dangerous on the left, creating two perfect chances that needed to be converted. the worrying thing is it has been obvious to most of us that townsend on the left and lennon on the right would be an obvious combination and yet this is the first time we see it, briefly, and with the wrong striker on the pitch. frustrating. again we were lucky today though, great that it buys AVB more time, I hope he doesn't become complacent though because there are a lot of things that are not quite right yet.
Guernman
I guess we should accept all these missed chances, surely ineviteble given how out of practive most of them are at shooting. ;)

Anyway great performance, back to something more like expected, on another day it would have been 5-0 but one step at a time. :)

COYS!
stu_u2k
Full marks to AVB for producing a much better attacking performance. Some great inter-play and should have scored more. Paulinho was brilliant and Dembele and Holtby also played well. DeFoe was unlucky but also showed in the last minutes why he is not a top striker by not anticipating the defender missing paulinho's great cross. We played some great stuff but difficult assess as after all it was Sunderland but very promising nevertheless. Well done lads and AVB.
Harry-Kari
In the post match interview on sky was Daws taking the mick out of Wenger with all his err err errs?
chrishove123
You make me laugh shedboy 2 ....he been supplying excellent crosses / chances ....for everyone, for every team he has played for at least 18 months.
82spursdebut
Man on, You're 100% Correct. Since lennon has been back Walker has looked much better. My motm was walker followed closely by Lennon.
spurfect one
I know they do play silly games during interviews and he did have a smirk on his face.
chrishove123
No one played badly……….Please remember the other team also, they worked hard Sunderland… We could have scored 5! There's better to come, of that I'm sure……Up the Spurs! Please don't give it the "bottom of the table" crap!
MAN ON!
Up to 6th. Just wish we could have boosted our goal difference a bit. Ah well atleast we got max points. Beggars can't be choosers. We are building up a little unbeaten run even though ravaged by injuries. Have to say our strikers are awful. Defoe is a big liability. The quicker we can get rid the better. One thing is certain, he can forget the world cup.
neymar
Townsend did very well when he come on, happy AVB tried him on the left. We have created great chances last two games, that is more like it. We could afford to leave £50m of talent on the bench, great squad. Have to go now as my football time has come to an end, time to make the family happy :). Feeling great. Enjoy your night. COYS

Apart from the missed chances which could have proved costly, I thought Defoe played really well today. Overall it was a really enjoyable 80 mins. I hope we can keep up this kind of performance in future games. Must do better in front of goal though, won't be too many games where we create so many high quality chances.

stu_u2k
Oh yeah, I just thought, as I said before, so much for inverted wingers. like I mentioned they cut in far too much and don't cross because they are on the wrong foo. Today, natural foot out on the wings and look at the amount of chances we had that came from crosses. Imagine if Soldado had that sort of service that he would have got had AVB played with natural footed wingers from the start. To me it was all pretty simple, you can't expect people to supply pinpoint crosses good enough and consistently enough for any forward to be able to feed off.
chrishove123
Can a ropey Spurs or Toffees supporting chef please feed Suarez a dodgy Lasagna next weekend? I hear he has an unhealthy taste for Human flesh. He might fancy a little nibble on some minced Gerrard!

With GB gone, it's important that azza gets lots of game time. He is going to be absolutely crucial if we want to achieve top 4 thisb season.

Spot on Spurfect, Walker MOTM with Lennon a close second! Though Capoue ran them close!
Durbanspur
neymar, i think BIG C just looks at goal scoring stats without actually thinking about the balance Lennon gives us.
spurfect one
Some stats/questions?....

1) We have score 2 goals in 4 consecutive matches. A record? 2) There have been 8 different goal scorers. A record? 3) In fact the top scorer in last 4 matches was a Mr O. Goal...!!!! COYS!!
Critical_Spur
Which lennon? The left winger, or the left wing back. Always two for the price of one with Aaron...
MAN ON!
Oh, and none of the last 8 goals were scored by our strikers!
Critical_Spur
So so pleased with the result. So pleased with the performance. More and more gelling is evident. Really, it should have been a 4-1 scoreline..but never mind.

Many players performed well and hard to single out anyone. Only Lloris and Dawson had average games. Capoue..great at CB. Walker plays well when Lennon is in front of him. Naughton did enough to keep Verts out of LB ;-) Dembele made a lot of surging runs and together with Paulinho and Chadli bossed the midfield.br>Defoe could easily have scored 3, no kidding. But guess what, Soldado had been misfiring too. I thought Defoe linked up as good as I have seen him. The flick and header that both hit the posts could have been in the highlight reel. I know Defoe is not the best striker in the world but I think he cops a bit too much flak from us fans.

7 points from the last 3 games, including 2 away wins coming from behind and a draw with Utd. That's how AVB is going to silence his critics. Good one. Come On You Spurs and we did WIN :-)
Madaboutspurs
As for today's game, Gel was showing! Considering there was YET another different look team out thee, the boys did well. Seems the WHOLE squad is starting to read from the same page. I am sure things will improve. I just picked up on some minor issues, 1) Still not clinical enough, despite making CLEAR CUT chances. 2) Couldn't put the game to bed after going 2-1 and 3) Unwarranted nail biting end!

Shame Townsend only got a brief cameo as he did brill when brought on. Could easily have had a couple of assists.......poor finishing by someone else will be used against his stats. We need Vert, Chiriches and Rose back against the 'pool. COYS!
Critical_Spur
I'm off out to celebrate……Have a good night all.
MAN ON!
Oops , forgot abt Holtby. Played very well and what a killer pass to Defoe. Defoe thought he was off side (he often is) and just casually swipes at it:-( Holtby...little gem of a player. Hard working, strong, passionate, team player, looks to score and you can see he enjoys playing for us. Yay!!
Madaboutspurs
Defoe could have had a hat trick today, Critical!
Durbanspur
Durbanspur, I agree. But that's defoe!. many have often said that he scores easily against lowly teams. Well, Sunderland are bottom! I think Pauly Lampard was well overdue for a goal. Next to Townsend, he's had more shots at goal imo.....!
Critical_Spur
Funny how the media have mood swings, from slagging us off to now, as per Sky Sports: "Super Spurs win again on road"

And some very positive comments from Jamie Redknapp and Hoddle: http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11675/9063033/tottenham-jamie-redknapp-says-sunderland-win-was-best-of-season
Critical_Spur
Thought Townsend looked very good on the left side even though he only had a few minutes.
Durbanspur
What a difference a win makes, no trolls (esp. Chavs) since they licking their wounds from the stoke mauling. The special freak must be fuming, while our avb can afford a wry smile and a deserved pat on the back. Not to mention a bit of breathing space from the vultures calling for his head. We are nicely setup for the visit of the bindippers next week. To win that game will be just the sweetest thing... EVER! Can't wait.
neymar
Sneaky ckeeky lucky win with loads of possession but nothing up front. Defoe is a headless chicken by himself chasing lost causes and missing the occasional sitter. Lennon still will not shoot or if he does its a painful trickle towards goal.Chadli not much cop. Pleased with the win but we still need a STRIKER (5 seasos now!!!!)
wentworth
Great 2nd half from the lads. Walker, Lennon and Dawson were fantastic and Holtby was superb. He worked his socks off and that ball to Defoe was top class. Dembele showed again why he needs to be further up the pitch. He is like Jonah Lomu, swatting defenders like flies and how refreshing was it to see Townsend on the left. He looked superb for the time he had there. COYS!

Wentworth - wouldn't. It be something to be 5 season's without a top notch striker and then we fill the void with the same one who created the vacancy. I here he is available in jan. Now it's night all

Not vintage, but a sneaky cheeky lucky win? Could easily have been 4 or 5. Not a Defoe fan, thought he played well. Was pleased with Townsend he done well. We need to put those chances away. COYS.
ItalianYiddo
We're getting better!!!
SpuriousLife
I good win even though we are still not playing brilliant, however imo I saw glimpses of very good play, second half we had a period where we moved the ball faster and forwards and we looked good. Wee got a og but we reverted back to slow build up again, took our foot of the peddle, why? Still we had a CM playing CD and a RB playing LB again and I think we did ok at the back. Dug deep and I thought we have looked better with Defoe in the side compared to Soldado. I think it is more about Defoe pace which Soldado doesn't seem to have so much but also his ability to look threatneing as he can make a goal chance out of nothing, something Soldado hasn't shown us yet. However, his finishing is still hit and miss and again it was 'miss' but he worked hard and I genuinely think the players around him play better when he is in the side at the moment but with his inconsistency we still have a problem with our strikers not scoring.

I think this season is like last season, the strikers not scoring again, Ade and Deoe woeful last season, it's happening again, this time Soldado and Defoe not scoring, don't know about Ade he hasn't played enough. So why have we got this problem. Seems to me Defoe gets chances but misses them and Soldado don't get many chances, this to me shows Defoe is getting involved more and the players are finding him but with Soldado may be there is something he is lacking in his game, we will see.

Lennon played well again and I thought Townsend on the left did well when he came on, that is what we need, our wingers getting crosses in and for me if Townsend wants to play this is what he needs to do, try and make the left his position and get the ball into the area, forget the RW inverted play, the RW imo is Lennons for now, he is far better than Townsend.

Thought Holtby worked really hard and show promise and Paulinho work rate is very good and Dembele is picking his game up but as Hoddle said pre match, he hasn't done enough in terms of scoring and assisting. Still we got three points, the manager and players were together and happy and there were some glimpse of improvement. Happy with the way we have twice come back from going behind shows character and Lloris, what is happening with you this last month? Still he will be fine.
WorldPeace
Once again we show that we have the vastly superior players but fail to win convincingly. No issues with bus parking today so no excuses there. Defoe did well enough linking up and was both unlucky and culpable. Dire first half from both teams but better when the pace and tempo picked up. Relieved rather than euphoric again.
Love totty
a good win, well done lads..........Lennon V good and same goes for Paulinho and Dembele and what do you know Capoue slots in so well at CB, would love to see him play there against a top team. Defoe offered more than Soldado, shuld have nailed the game earlier...Cahdli's best game by far...............come along you jolly old tottingham..............................
tophobunty1882
Dembele motm for me. Capoue will be immense for us again. Lennon, Paulinho looking good. Holtby and Dawson great attitude. Liking this 4.1.4.1 that we're playing at times, with Dembele and Paulinho attacking more... Another good forward aside, (and a left-back) this squad's got legs. We'll do better than most second half of the season. Well done AVB.
ledders77
quick enough to slate AVB, but so chuffed he is fighting his way through this turmoil, these back t back wins are huge and great on the back of defeat against Man City well done AVB ... he chooses team yet the ******** press say players get him out of it! he cant win

Great response again if we can now get some momentum at home which seems the real problems for the way AvB sets up the team for matches. COYS

That wasnt a good performance. We were awful in the first half. Improved in the second. I question the wisdom of playing Chadli and Defoe - i felt the first was a passenger before his header across goal - and then a passenger afterwards. I also feel had Soldado played he would have put 1 or 2 of those must score chances away that defoe had. Anyway, 2 wins coming from behind might just be enough to trick the players into thinking they are back. But i must admit im very nervous for next Sunday against Liverpool. I feel Suarez will tear Dawson a new one. We need to start with Chiriches and Vertonghen if we hope to muzzle him a bit... With regards to yesterdays match. I was impressed with Walker, Lennon, Dembele, and Holtby (most surprisingly). Townsend looked the more dangerous on the left. We should start him in that position as he is forced to cross not shoot. The way he bursts down in those last few minutes reminded me of a Welshman we once knew. Lets hope we have confidence. A win against Liverpool and we are right back in it. The Anfield lot seem incredibly confident about getting a Citi-esc result against us. Suarez vs Dawson. makes me feel sick.

I'm sticking to my post City prediction. AvB to be December Manager of the Month! Football is a funny old game, and this years PL is certainly demonstrating that. Seriously if you were told that after the Spurs/Utd game that one of those teams would lose their next 2 matches and one would win their next 2 matches which camp would you have put them in? Well done Spurs and well done AvB, he has bought himself valuable time from the media hyenas, who will now smell the blood at OT. Van persie also rumoured to want out. What we need is a nice juicy rumour this week that Suarez also wants out, that might upset the Liverpool apple cart.

critical ... re that Jamie Redknapp thread, I thought we drew 2-2 with manu not 1-1. He's nearly as bad as his dad. lol

Sorry Mix dont understand your question try again. If Soldado had played he likely would have been hidng behind a defender, at least Defoe created very good space for himself, tow of his chances where very sharp chances and a little unlucky to hit the woodwork. We still need a forward better than both....
tophobunty1882
i am not sure Soldado is a better penalty taker than Berba so i think we should buy back the ever so slightly more talented Berba and try to get 2000 (two thousand) of our 26 million back on Soldado.
tophobunty1882
Nah, what we "should have done" is spend more than the £26m we spent on Soldado, on a player that is doing worse than him, yet is used to the league, the country, his teammates etc etc etc. That makes sense, LMFAO.. Oh but wait, that other striker was never going to repeat last seasons form whilst playing in the same struggling team. Really? and it's everyone else that comes up with convenient excuses. Dream stuff right here, pure comedy gold!!
