Am I alone in actually quite enjoying last nights game and feeling quite positive about much of what I saw?
Sure we defended terribly at times and once again wasted a whole host of chances, however, were there positives that should give us hope that all is not too bad? Lets consider that we have ONE available centre half, therefore ONE of our four main central midfielders to call upon. ONE striker who has played 30 MINUTES since last summer, should we really expect miracles from last nights game?
Lets add the fact we lost one of the major attacking threats in Andros Townsend to injury when we were winning. Sensibly had to remove Danny Rose and Emmanuel Adebayor, due to a previous lack of minutes, as well as injuries to the likes of Vertonghen, Kaboul and Sandro that drastically restricted his options from the bench, let alone from the start. Of course we could have used Soldado to replace a tiring Ade, however, how often have we moaned that Defoe and Soldardo are too similar to partner each other?
If I were selecting the starting line up, I might well have opted for Holtby over Sigurdsson in the middle and Soldado over Defoe, but in reality they are just opinions and are such tight calls that they could be argued differently. Lets also consider the number of games in the next couple of weeks. We know that Defoe and Ade at least have experience of playing together, whilst we don't know for example that Roberto might have been carrying a slight knock. What is obvious was that despite being seriously short on options, we played with a fire and intensity for much of the game that has been all too rare under AVB.
I have previously stated that I would happily swap the current dull as dishwater brand that has supposedly brought us to the brink of the top, for free flowing entertaining football with a mid table finish. Obviously I would prefer both, but if I had to choose, my enjoyment of watching us play Fulham in a mid table clash is better than my enduring a game against a Real Madrid. I may well be a small minority, but I want to be entertained and look forward to my football, as opposed to enduring it out of blind loyalty.
Last night was far from perfect in many ways, but as a Spurs fan, I am used to imperfection and more than a hint of the Kamikaze. However I feel there was enough light at the end of what I hope is a short tunnel to feel Tim Sherwood has the right attitude and football ethos to take the club forward. Add two experienced centre halves, the ability to keep Rose and Ade on for 90 minutes and have two of our best CM's in the team, and I feel we would have won with greater ease than it initially looked. Can we imagine for example, Lloris, Walker, Kaboul, Vertonghen, Rose, Paulinho, Dembele, Lennon, Townsend, Ade and Defoe losing last night?
I do see potential trouble on the horizon, whoever takes over from AVB. A squad that is full of quality, but equipped more for a lone striker. Positionally heavy in one or two areas perhaps and light in others, but how much change is really needed? In the short term, could a returning BAE and Ade to the fold offer an instant solution, whilst defensively we do need to take a serious look at Younes Kaboul and his ability to play regular football.
The remainder of the season may well end up as another one of consolidation, but lets take our time and get it right for once. It is inevitable that any new man will want to implement his own ideas and that always involves shipping in and out big money players to a squad that is already struggling to find stability. Fans and media are already scrutinising Franco Baldini as some no nothing meddler, intent on stealing the limelight from his manager, however lets remember that he is only just in the job himself and we were very much saved by Gareth Bale last season and played some terrible and predictable stuff before the Italian was given the role, so is it really his fault?..
