'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Imperfection and a hint of the Kamikaze.

Am I alone in actually quite enjoying last nights game and feeling quite positive about much of what I saw?

Sure we defended terribly at times and once again wasted a whole host of chances, however, were there positives that should give us hope that all is not too bad? Lets consider that we have ONE available centre half, therefore ONE of our four main central midfielders to call upon. ONE striker who has played 30 MINUTES since last summer, should we really expect miracles from last nights game?

Lets add the fact we lost one of the major attacking threats in Andros Townsend to injury when we were winning. Sensibly had to remove Danny Rose and Emmanuel Adebayor, due to a previous lack of minutes, as well as injuries to the likes of Vertonghen, Kaboul and Sandro that drastically restricted his options from the bench, let alone from the start. Of course we could have used Soldado to replace a tiring Ade, however, how often have we moaned that Defoe and Soldardo are too similar to partner each other?

If I were selecting the starting line up, I might well have opted for Holtby over Sigurdsson in the middle and Soldado over Defoe, but in reality they are just opinions and are such tight calls that they could be argued differently. Lets also consider the number of games in the next couple of weeks. We know that Defoe and Ade at least have experience of playing together, whilst we don't know for example that Roberto might have been carrying a slight knock. What is obvious was that despite being seriously short on options, we played with a fire and intensity for much of the game that has been all too rare under AVB.

I have previously stated that I would happily swap the current dull as dishwater brand that has supposedly brought us to the brink of the top, for free flowing entertaining football with a mid table finish. Obviously I would prefer both, but if I had to choose, my enjoyment of watching us play Fulham in a mid table clash is better than my enduring a game against a Real Madrid. I may well be a small minority, but I want to be entertained and look forward to my football, as opposed to enduring it out of blind loyalty.

Last night was far from perfect in many ways, but as a Spurs fan, I am used to imperfection and more than a hint of the Kamikaze. However I feel there was enough light at the end of what I hope is a short tunnel to feel Tim Sherwood has the right attitude and football ethos to take the club forward. Add two experienced centre halves, the ability to keep Rose and Ade on for 90 minutes and have two of our best CM's in the team, and I feel we would have won with greater ease than it initially looked. Can we imagine for example, Lloris, Walker, Kaboul, Vertonghen, Rose, Paulinho, Dembele, Lennon, Townsend, Ade and Defoe losing last night?

I do see potential trouble on the horizon, whoever takes over from AVB. A squad that is full of quality, but equipped more for a lone striker. Positionally heavy in one or two areas perhaps and light in others, but how much change is really needed? In the short term, could a returning BAE and Ade to the fold offer an instant solution, whilst defensively we do need to take a serious look at Younes Kaboul and his ability to play regular football.

The remainder of the season may well end up as another one of consolidation, but lets take our time and get it right for once. It is inevitable that any new man will want to implement his own ideas and that always involves shipping in and out big money players to a squad that is already struggling to find stability. Fans and media are already scrutinising Franco Baldini as some no nothing meddler, intent on stealing the limelight from his manager, however lets remember that he is only just in the job himself and we were very much saved by Gareth Bale last season and played some terrible and predictable stuff before the Italian was given the role, so is it really his fault?..

Sherwood is little boy lost....Spurs isn't a trainee scheme for want to be managers...we sacked Arry and should have got rid of his 'jobs for the boys' team at the same time...why is Freund in temporary charge isn't he number 2?
shedboy2
If we don't (as looks likely) have a plan in place for a permanent manager then we need an interim ASAP...we do not have a season (another year off the life off every aging Spurs fan) to waste... Hoddle knows the club, has managed at the highest level would be a good option and not cost the earth...Tim needs to be kicked out of the way and swallow his pride for the rest of the season...Levy needs to give the Interim 10m (min) plus player sales to buy in Jan then get out of the way, Baldini needs guidance on the type of player to buy...but we only need a couple of players...
shedboy2
why isn't Steffen Freund in charge?...
shedboy2
Was Freund there last night? It is weird that he is not part of the set up but it is only Sherwood, Ramsey and Ferdinand as first team coaches.
Kong
Ox - I feel you may have enjoyed what you saw yesterday evening because we have been so starved of attacking play in recent months under AVB. However, thinking rationally and more long-term, yesterday's team shape and performance was not one that will deliver any success for us going forward. We all agree that we need to be more attacking and more incisive but not at the total expense of some defensive solidity or solely by 'running around fast for as long as possible'. This is modern football we are talking about and it does need to be tactical and played by teams who understand structure and shape but we mustn't forget that games are won and lost by scoring a good number of goals and conceding less. Any extreme one way or the other won't deliver success. With AVB we seem to have had one extreme and going by last night's performance (and even back to Redknapp) we now have the other. Neither of them will work long-term. We are crying out for a manager that understands that the middle is where we need to be and can deliver it. However who this manager is and whether they can be convinced to come to Spurs and work with Levy / ENIC is another matter all together.
SpuriousLife
Yes you are!!!! Be careful what you wish for that's all I can say, ridiculous at board level, ridiculous and fickle fans, embarrassed to be a Spurs fan today..............
andyid
Dont think Levy is going to wait for anyone right now to become available. The right appointment is more important than quick appointment.
Kong
We had 4 shots on target last night even when playing well.
Kong
Sherwood had them playing 100 miles per hour football. Loads of energy, effort, hustle and bustle, like a lower division side given it their all in a big cup tie against a big club. Yes he motivated the lads, but you cant play at that level of physical intensity every game without knackering out your team. You have to let the ball do the work. Levy won't understand that of course, but will send Sherwood packing and bring in his next scapegoat coach, quite simply because Sherwood lost. But can Levy find a top level coach now after his appalling track record of hiring and firing? He will of course get someone in, most likely a journey man style coach who is happy to be treated like crap by the board in return for a couple of million. ENIC OUT!!!
Pele10
Sherwood is out of his depth....we need an interim Manager NOW...there isn't time to wait the club is a joke we don't need someone to come in and fit with that we need someone who knows what he's doing!
shedboy2
Please not glen hoddle been there done that, he is our football idol end of, give tim a chance and a few months, coys
spurs50yrs
at least people can hopefully now see Vlad's weakness for heading a ball...terrible in the air, he needs a player like Daws to be first and he can sweep up...good player but far from top4 pl ready....
shedboy2
Yes.
van der haart lane
spurs50yrs- Hoddle has matured and we now have a better squad....but if you're happy to head headlong into obscurity with YTS Tim in charge then you don't really want spurs to be successful....our club is NOT A TRAINING ACADEMY for managers, we should not be being experimented on by an incompetent Chairman! How about you have a shot at Managing it? How about me? why not give me a chance...it's madness.
shedboy2
Perhaps Levy would like to reimburse the fans...he can't even put out a full team or a qualified manager.....because he's diverting the funds....
shedboy2
some idiot on TalkSport saying he doesn't want Hoddle back because the footy was bad....so was the squad! and quite frankly the players at the time only understood 442 and not some of the continental methods Glen was trying to impart- the league has caught up!....when asked who should come in then...err don't know....
shedboy2
shedboy2, of course Sherwood is out of his depth! But more importantly, Levy is completely out of his depth! Our great football club has been run for 14 seasons by a guy who made his millions running a tacky discount high street men's wear chain called My Byrite, who later bought some shares in a company called ENIC, became mates with Sir Sugar as a rich Spurs fan and the rest is history... At least Sherwood was a football player and coach. Levy is a glorified rag trade boy running Tottenham Hotspur Football club who has failed to learn a single about football in 14 seasons. Once a rag trade boy, always a rag trade boy... ENIC OUT!!
Pele10
Agree shedboy, but daws and Younes who would have been ideal for that game with theit arial strength were not available. Even so, their second goal should and could have been defended against. Also I think I must be the only one that thought Andros had a poor game with his touch and product.
avalaugh
Fitness is obviously an issue. This is why we ran out of steam for the last 20 mins or so, and surely why we are picking up most of our injuries. Whether it's Sherwood, freund, hoddle or whoever, we need to get the fitness levels up. Great to see the lads running their hearts out and playing more attacking football, but without the levels of fitness required to play this way we will continue to lose games and leads late on as we did at the start of last season!
Dublin Hotspur
shedbot ... if Baldini needs guidance he should not be there ... the person who should be there is the one that would guide him.
Geofspurs
Anyone else bored senseless of us endlessly unable to hit the target?
oi.you.there
I would have Hoddle back, but not whilst ENIC are around! I have seen my hero back stabbed by Loser Levy once, never want to see that happen again. I would be very happy for Glenn to have another chance with a much better squad and a class owner supporting his project... But until such time keep away Glenn, your much to classy for loser Levy and the football mercenary!!!
Pele10
Just throwing this one out there, but what about Rafa? Out of favour with Napoli......
King26
Pele10 - appalling track record...? The only track record that matters is progression of our club. It is never a solid vertical progression.... It will be rocky. But ENIC have secured us 2 4th placed finishes and a number of 5th places despite us not have that sort of pedigree post 1990/91. ENIC are here to stay. It is better that they finish what they started as it would be a nightmare for them to leave stadium plans at this stage! Let them get stadium built, a new manager in, and let common sense prevail. Once stadium in place, THEN let's review where we are at. If it is true (as manner suggest) that they are out for a big pay day, then once the stadium is built, they would be off anyways. However, either way, it is still in their best interests for us to be a top 5 club. So I still expect us to be there. Have you ever thought that any new owners could be WORSE???? Could want to change our shirt colours or our name??? Remember Wimbledon getting Norwegian owners who put in that Norwegian coach who was an absolute nut job. That was the death of Wimbledon. Be grateful that we have owners that have progressed us, both financially AND on the pitch. Yes, I was at the game yesterday and equally frustrated at how the soul has been sucked out of our team. That is down to AVB, and yes his appointment. But mistakes happen, and they can be rectified.
TonyRich
King26 - .... I think that you answered your own question.... "out of favour"... WHY is he out of favour so soon? It would be another short term appointment.... Rafa has been an excellent coach, but he now has too much baggage...
TonyRich
Dublin they ran out of steam because they were told to play at a frenetic "up and at em" tempo. Run faster and longer than the opposition. Nice tactic Tim. We were so spread out it meant the central midfield 2 were absolutely fecked on 60 mins trying to cover so much ground. It was a step back to the dark ages. If u want frenetic end to end stuff there is plenty of basketball on tv. Oh well Ox you will get what u wanted with Tim in charge - a lot of frantic running around, an empty trophy cabinet and mid-table finishes with a bunch of quality young euro stars with huge potential (100 mills worth) scratching their heads saying 'what the hell happened I didnt sign for this". We are a joke. Levy is a joke.
StillRickyVilla
avalaugh- of course I realise there were mitigating circumstances last night and indeed against pool as to who we could play....but we should never have started the season without another LB. I said it at the time...you'd think these highly paid 'managers' could think one step ahead!
shedboy2
shedboy2 - agreed on Chirches / Dawson.... Although playing alongside Capoue hardly helps... So what Ox is saying is 100% correct. West Ham won, but they needn't have laboured it so much.... We had next to no defence. Plus the conditions (same for both teams of course) only compounded it. However, I don't want Hoddle. The "hero coming back" thiing NEVER works. Liverpool fans called for Kenny after Hodgson....didn't work. Even Kenny has previously done the double as manager. The game moves on. It has moved past Hoddle....who never has a good record as manager anyway - apart from as England manager. I see him as more an International / continental manager. Not EPL.
TonyRich
shedboy2 .... 'How about me? why not give me a chance...it's madnes.' ... Scary thought; the only thing thing worse than you being in charge would be me being in charge! ;-) But I get your point!
Geofspurs
TonyRich - we've already been waiting 13 years for the ENIC promised stadium and will probably have to wait at least another 6 or 7 years before it's ready (maybe I'm being a bit optimistic there). That'll be 20 years we've waited for the stadium. That in itself is not acceptable what with it being the first explicit promise made by ENIC when they took over. Using it as an excuse for us not being successful in the meantime is just another jab in the eye for us long-suffering and often misled (some may say deluded) Spurs fans.
SpuriousLife
StillRickyVilla - if we scored early doors, it would have worked. If we scored that "easier to score" chance at 1-1, it would have worked...
TonyRich
TR... I feel we have 'outgrown' ENIC. They are not the owners that will take us forward anymore.

Yesterday's game were like it was back in the days of 'arry was in charge. It was good when we won but we have seen in the past playing like this is not the answer long term.

We need a clear direction NOW.
taniban
shedboy, agreed we should have had the appropriate LB cover if Fryers was not deemed to be up to the job, especially as covering this position led to Jan getting injured, exacerbating our CB options....
avalaugh
TR- you say ENIC have secured us 4th place finishes...funny i thought that was Redknapp who performed well above his ENIC brief of saving us from relegation...a position we found ourselves in after Levy brought in his beloved DoF system...don't accept their BS if they can build the stadium on the cheap they will, by the time it's built and they've realised the value they have created...you, me and every other Spurs fan will pick up the tab it'll be too late...the best hope we have is the have the best players possible...success on the pitch....as for thinking of worse Owners...have you ever thought we could have so much BETTER?
shedboy2
TonyRich, one of the last great ENIC apologists, who tells us the only track record is the progression of the club, with an empty trophy cabinet, the worst trophy per season percentage of any THFC owners since world war 2, only 1 CL appearance in 14 seasons, (soon to be 15) and a season ticket waiting list of more than 30,000 loyal Spurs who Levy and and Lewis have failed to provide seating for a period of at least 18 seasons, and you call that progression? You ENIC apologists are a dying breed, virtually none of you left on here. Good to see you brave enough to come on here and embarrass yourself with your pro Levy Lewis stuff. Your almost as brave as Danny Boy as he sits in the directors box with the camera doing close ups on his very disturbed, confused, angry, bewildered looking face, that the Arsenal, Chelsea, and West Ham fans etc etc etc find highly entertaining... ENIC OUT!!!
Pele10
Geofspurs- ;)... I'm qualified in Management....if you've got coaching we could be the dream team...;)...
shedboy2
Pelebro must be loving this. ;)
taniban
i hear everyone say that our squad is full of potential , quotes like tottenham have a great side not playing to there strengths etc. I'm starting to ask myself the question , are these new players that much better than the ones we had/have etc , is paulinho that much better than the Hudd or jake ? is our Romanian centre half a mistake waiting to happen and not a shadow on the solid caulker, is Soldado jermain in disguise ? Capoue is a carbon copy of the beast, normally im full of optimism but these players don't fill me with much confidence to be honest ! yea i know its early days but we are half way through a season. i forgot to mention Lamela, the kid looks like a superstar but aint got the touch ! as yet ! am i alone in thinking this ?
South L/Derry Spurs
TR- perhaps you can tell me where the 70m debt on our books last year came from?....it wasn't from transfers or wages....yes we're well run...at this rate into the ground.....yes, let's appoint a man who's never done the job before and hint we'll keep him till the end of the season (cheap option)...Levy is tearing the club apart.
shedboy2
Ox your article shows what you are, a fan. A fan that wants to be entertained and you have every right to it, but fans get twitchy when relegation looms or when the team loses a couple of games in a row. I can't see you cutting as a manager either, a manager would have had an eye on the next match, when we were playing 100 miles an hour did you spare a thought on that we have a difficult game on Sunday? We spent a lot of energy last night, how are we going to cope against Southampton's pressure game? Are we going for a 4-4-2?
ItalianYiddo
Totally sick of Spurs being a laughing stock! Time for ENIC to sell up and give another company a go. Jol..sacked to soon, Redkanpp.. sacked to soon..AVB sacked to soon. We have tried young foreign managers, experienced foreign managers, experienced English managers and nothing is satisfying the board! The only constant in the last few years??? ENIC!!!!
Matthew Ramstead
Im not sure I understand the comments that Sherwood in unqualified and out of his depth. we are talking about ONE GAME and a squad without several key players and a lack of depth in other areas, as has been repeatedly mentioned.
oxfordspur
Dawson is as good as most in the air, but his time has almost come. We need someone who can command the box in the way Ledley did!
Geofspurs
Tony we will win games playing like that. And playing 100 miles per hour will keep the masses happy although why they dont just watch the san antonio spurs ill never know if its fast and frenetic what they want. But we will never keep up that tempo 2 games a week and never for a full season. Get ready for the harry days of bailing out of cups and europe as soon as we can and being knackered by march. We spent 100 mill on young euro potential specifically brought in to play more patient, effective footbal with a plan. Now we have mike bassett as manager standing up in front of them calling for "4, 4 phucking 2". We have no plan. It is a mess. Levy out.
StillRickyVilla
South L/Derry Spurs- you do have a point...I'm happy with Pauli but Vlad is our David Luiz! Soldado is similar to Defoe and bought for a system we no longer play (lennon and Bale on the flanks) good player but not great, Chadli good squad player never taking us to another level, eriksen is light but I feel will get there...lamela was bought for a manager who didn't want him so confidence shattered...he'll come good....BUT we do need a MANAGER (not just coach) who can bring it all together....otherwise we have a recipe for disaster with short order Tim in the kitchen...
shedboy2
taniban, Ill be loving it when this ENIC mob are out, and we have some class owners running the show! Until such time, I'm suffering big time... ;)
Pele10
Pele10….. I just want to say that I've not got a season ticket and never have had one, but I manage to buy tickets for every home match I can get to.
MAN ON!
Pele....Levy and Hoddle are good friends.

shedboy2 ... Your skills would be useful. I did play as a striker and got a state (Western Australia) trophy ... but at 66 I might be considered too old, for the task ... mind you, I don't think so! ;-)
Geofspurs
SRV - It is too soon to call Sherwood a 4-4-2 merchant...

Maybe he thought he would try out the 4-4-2 to 'please the fans'
taniban
Pele 10 / shedboy 2.....perhaps you should come up with a list of people prepared to buy THFC off Enic / Levy. My understanding is...that Mr.Lewis is putting appx' £150mill' of his own money into THFC / Stadium. There's a clue...for you there.
82spursdebut
The best thing about the bad times is ... it makes the good times so much more enjoyable. And they will come!
Geofspurs
Oxfordspur, I'm not at all positive about what I saw last night…. We were s**t!
MAN ON!
oxfordspur- Tim Sherwood has NEVER been a 1st team manager....can you understand why putting a person who is not qualified (doesn't have the badge ie unqualified) has no experience may be considered out of his depth?...to use an analogy....he's been thrown into the deep end to see if he sinks or swims.....Why should we, the fans be treated with such dis-respect as to be experimented on with a Trainee PL manager?...for a couple of games to cover, sure i understand (although one would have thought the first team assistant manager would step in)...any longer and Levy is sticking his fingers up at the fans....
shedboy2
I think we have to assume that there will be a striking of the balance between 100mph and a more measured and cohesive way of playing. for the first 70 mins, West Ham were quite content to sit back and sock up the pressure and with a little more player confidence and understanding. What I liked was the intent to hit the corners and get ball in, something I bet wasn't lost on Soldado, as he watched from the bench. equally Ade dropping deep and then having the intent to get in the box at every opportunity was a real positive. lets not be all so doom and gloom and though we have to accept it isn't a great time to be a spurs fan, we are equally not a million miles from being a very decent side
oxfordspur
taniban…. That's not a good tactic. Trying to please the fans.
MAN ON!
Shedboy 2......you mean "FRUEND"...LMAO....the bloke hardly gets off his backside. DOUR DOUR DOUR....lol

82spursdebut- you understand that Lewis is putting his own money into the stadium...from what source? what happened to the 50m fund in the summer?....it's hogwash if he does put money in...it will be a loan with a return expected...ie interest...who do you think pays that bill?...us the fans....At least roman sticks in money and writes it off...the dead owner of Saints puts more money into the club than our owner...

Geofspurs- you weren't listening...harry told you when the good times were here...you missed them!...;)

442 is out of favour for a reason....you normally get over run in mid...and we don't have the squad for 442 to work very often.

To play as Spurs did last night did not need much in the way of management or tactics. In all seriousness, shedboy, Geofspurs or myself could have got them running about as SRV says, "headless chickens".
MAN ON!
and for the record. I hate the 4-4-2 formation.

Levy has zero judgement. Time and again he makes ludicrous decisions yet the managers carry the can. He has too much ego and wants to be manager. If hed had his way we would moved to east london west ham heartland! Thats how much he cares about us. But he was even crap at that being owned by karen brady in the OS bid. Hes only interested in one thing - the eventual profit on the sale of the club. Hurry up and get the stadium built, sell up at a massive profit and phuck off.
StillRickyVilla
Enic, Levy, Baldini, Manager, Favourite Player, Least Favourite Player, your find all the answers on the link, look at the games played to goals return, take a look at the same stat over the prem games this season to date and last season Defoe has not scored in the prem this season, Lennon's last goal March this year. We have lots of players and lots of players who can't score; click on any squad player down the right side http://www.goal.com/en-gb/people/england/10623/aaron-lennon - you can also go into this one and see what's been happening season by season http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/first-team/statistics/ our problem is assists and goals, as for defending wet spam had a free kick after Defoe was given off-side, so our back line dropped to our own 18yd line, asking the keeper to drop it into the ruck of players, why the hell did we not push up 10 or 15 yds, watch walker on the second goal turn his back from the wet spam header. Hell will freeze over before this lot gel, Ade was our best player last night, working his socks off and scoring, yeah some will say he had a point to prove, what about the other players, did they not have a point to prove, they proved one or two points they are not good enough, in areas of the pitch that matter most.
spu 4 life
srv- I'd sooner they sell up deciding as such wealthy men they don't need the grief and their reputations in tatters..(which is starting to happen) every penny profit they take is money out of the club...money that can't be used for players, keeping ticket prices down etc....
shedboy2
MAN ON! I bet you could have got the team to push up, play sideways and backwards and take 40 shots per game from 55 yards without much effort also..
Guyver
Wow I’m disappointed too guys but some of the comments on here are just stupid. Just blatantly slagging off anyone and everything. ONE phucking game FFS with a decimated defence. I’m not saying Tim is the answer by any means but the expression “complaining just to be heard” rings a bell. Now we have “outgrown ENIC” have we…….yeah the Global phenomenon known as THFC has out grown a multibillion pound corporation who invest large amounts into the club every year. some of you guys just need to put your toys back in your pram and grow the phuck up. We are having a bad patch, and I didn’t hear ANYONE complaining a few months ago when £17m, £26m, £27M cheques were being written!!! And before the whole “Bale money” spiel HE WANTED TO LEAVE!!! Not every chairman / owner would have just handed upward of £100m back into the business you know, I’m not a levy fan nor am I against, but just blaming him every single post because your bottom lip is out is bollox.
hudderspur
Ade was our best player last night and that says a lot about the rest of the team, considering that was his first start, in how long?
MAN ON!
Shedboy 2....you don't know if Mr.Lewis will seek a return on that money. I'm Taking it as a Legacy he wishes to leave for London, his roots. Whether we like Enic / Levy...or Not.....better they stay and finish the Building job....unless we can find another Billionaire that loves THFC. Least we can see that Mr.Levy attends the majority of the games. This should tell...we fans....that he loves THFC / Football. Fruend vs Sherwood / Ramsey / Ferdinand......NO Contest.
82spursdebut
spu 4 life- not even looked at the figures yet...but how are you expecting Lennon to score from the physio room or bench?...he's only ever scored at about the same rate as Townsend but his strength however is assists....
shedboy2
Steffen was on the bench last night, he was reading something and writing down notes, either that or he was doing a Sudoku puzzle or ringing his takeaway order through.
spu 4 life
hudderspur- how much have ENIC put into Spurs this year?
shedboy2

The only Kamakazi I like is the PJ Harvey song. Pass and move control the ball understand the space attack the box. Win it back quickly.
spurdon
Mixed bag for Sherwood, stuck with the experienced prem players and a familiar formation, it worked to a point, his tactical nativity got exposed, the last thing you want when there lumping ball into the box is defend that deep, Fryers was at fault the 2nd goal, gave Diame way to much time to ping a cross in. But i'm with Ox made for much better watching than previous games, get the right manager in to tweak things slightly should be in for a much better season.
coys1717
82spursdebut- You hope Lewis will just give us 150m? really? do you really believe that after 13 years of not 'giving' us anything he'll just hand over 150m? and Levy loves Spurs??? he'll drop the pin from his lapel in the bin on his way out....
shedboy2
spu 4 life- i will have a look but from memory he got us 7 assists last season...your stats tend not be so good from the stands though....
shedboy2
Yes, shedboy...cos' he don't need the money where he going. Levy Loves spurs...you don't go to all those games, year after ear and not build a love for football / THFC.
82spursdebut
We have turned into a laughing stock of the prem over the last few games, it needs to change and quick you can't have favourites in football, maybe a new manager will see it for what it is a complete shambles and re-shape us into a force again, we have some excellent players, a lot better then some teams, it's getting a manager to do the job and get the best out of them, if they are not good enough get shot of them, I don't care what happens to them, they can go and play for someone else, it only takes a few games and you find yourself in free fall, we might well end up top 4, at the moment I would be happy finishing 17th, Soton, WBA and Stoke 9pts, we need all 9 nothing else will do for me.
spu 4 life
Last night was better in terms of attacking and moving the ball and getting crosses in but it was nothing more than the old spurs without the talent of Bale, or a Modric or a Berby. We have been a 'nearly' team and needed on two or three players to add to our best players make us a great team, but we sold all our best players. The core of Tottenham is lost and we have no identity. Last night was like watching us go back a few years, AVB brought a different more updated system but he wasn't given time to complete it, right or wrong. It really did seem outdated last night and no way will that take us forward.

We were without key players which may help but as I see it we are a mess, we have lost our identity, our heart our core and I just don't know how we are going to get it back. I guess hard work, a mixture of the players 'wanting' it and a manager that can sort it out and help us find ourselves again. Please don't be fooled by that performance last night and don't be fooled by Ade efforts, it will not last imo. Personally I think we need to let a couple or three players go an bring in some to make the squad more balanced. I no longer have any idea how we should play, what formation, what personnel.

I think we miss Dawson for his heading, even though I am worried he is getting passed it now. I think we have nothing up top even though Ade did well, but as I said it will not last imo. I think the best players for us are the Tottenham players, Lennon, Walker and Rose seems to be doing well. We need Sandro back, Dembele needs to go, he has never really given us much, good player but not good enough to run that midfield. Siggy, did some good stuff but come on from Modric to Siggy in the CM, same with Holtby. We haven't replaced Modric, Berby, Bale or VDV non of our new places have shown us they are equally as good.

Kaboul needs to go, unreliable, Fryers needs to go out on loan as does naughton to see if they can improve. If we are looking for top four these players are not good enough. Defoe times is up, and as for Soldado who knows. I would like to think Lamela and Eriksen might come good once they start playing but not sure Chadli will be anything more than a squad player.

Shed – This summer I think they netted about £10m Profit on transfers. AND??? Do you expect them to say “well since the we have the Bale money let’s just blow £200m”!!! and can we please remember Bale was an asset of THFC who they developed. We bought too many players as it was. Now it’s come out that AVB wanted Hulk and Moutinho…….hulk would have been upward of £35m and Moutinho £25m…..what a bloody waste of money, and I think we also forget the fact that they didn’t want to come to THFC

We are playing badly at the moment and something needed to change and it has. Im not happy by any means, but I don’t see the point in blaming the board this time. The majority were happy with AVB’s appointment and ecstatic about the summer signings……….we were just as wrong as levy. Oh, and anyone hear the comments from Dawson basically saying its our fault we got AVB the sack?? Doesn’t exactly sound sad that he’s gone does he!
hudderspur
Levy is human though...and can make mistakes...which makes him answerable to many...inc' his Boss.
82spursdebut
hudderspur, Levy appointed AVB, he wasn't first choice by many on here including me. Having appointed him, you have to support and back him to the very maximum, you have to let him manage the team and let it be known that he has absolute power on team affairs. You than give him at the very least a full season having started again with a new team and then assess the situation. Levy has done none of that, he is at best incompetent for appointing the wrong man in the first place. The fans have every right to be angry. COYS.
ItalianYiddo
I'm sorry but this is a results game, managers come and go from every club, we are not a stand out for hiring and firing. Discounting caretakers and the Santini/Jol fiasco we sit around average for the number of managers since 2001. Only the likes of Arsenal, Man Utd, Everton and Stoke have a low turn over of managers 2 of those clubs have been hugely successful and the other 2 well...... So the hiring firing comment is factually wrong AGAIN. If you have a manager not getting results you have to make a decision to improve things. All apart from one was sacked for failing to deliver and I have discussed the Harry sacking previous!
fletch77
I could have had assists last season all you had to do was pass it to Bale, he did the rest.

Redknapp clone in 4-4-2, 100mph & eventually run out of steam shocker. Never saw that one coming!! Still, at least the press have somebody to share a joke with again. Oh how I laughed when Sherwood was cracking jokes about sleeping like a baby because he woke up 4 times crying. Oddly enough, I went to bed & woke up 4 times crying, because of the obviousness that we have witnessed, and are about to witness more of what was so wrong in the Redknapp days. Can't wait!!

Well done Adebayor, got your goal, worked hard, try keeping it up, for a change.

I'm NOT INTERESTED in what AVB would've done, he's GONE, so why speak about him? It's my club, and the future of it that concerns me. Tim Sherwood, in my opinion, is NOT the future of my club.

One final thing, after reading the match thread, I'm wondering why there was not a single comment along the lines of, "Fu***ng clueless Sherwood, got a perfectly fit defender in Fryers, but plays midfielder Capoue instead".. Funny that!!

coopsieyid
All IMHO OF COURSE. Shame Sherwood couldn't conjure a win from his first game in charge but even then some would still have moaned about something. What really makes me smile is the change in attitude from some, to us playing all out attacking football at top speed, that has been mooted, as opposed to the play it around and wear the other team out, we used to with AVB. Now that failed, it appears to be wrong too! NO pleasing some fans, any of the time let alone all the time. It was said by quite a few on here, be careful what wish for, so let's wait and see what happens, when it happens. Anyway we cannot do much about it unless somebody (pelebro or shedboy?) wants to start a campaign to get ENIC to sell up. Or we all club together and try to buy them out, Even then it's very unlikely to make a difference. They won't sell until the stadium is built and we are regular CL competitors. Just seems typical that THFC fans are never satisfied with what we have, always expecting/demanding more. Hope all you have a happier life away from football. Anyway to last nights game......WHAT A Difference 2 central defenders who can win headers would have made last night. From what I saw WHU mostly played route one football and we didn't win many challenges from that. They were also much quicker to the knock downs. Lack of clinical finishing again also cost us dearly. As I say all IMHO. COYS onwards and upwards.

Obviously defense was depleted. Midfield surprised me though, Siggy isn't a 'two in the middle' midfielder. Was the team picked with Sunday in mind? It was about missed chances again but we did create clearer-cut ones. Defoes' pass for the goal was majestic. I've always thought he should play the 'Rooney' role rather than off the shoulder. Not only can he see a pass, he can execute it. And all the No. 10's we buy...lol. To play elsewhere... Worse that it was against soon to be relegated wet spam. Biggest issue was our defending in the 2nd half. Where to begin? Sherwoods' team-talks and the players perception of him are key to his position. Has he an aura? Or is he seen as a youth developer by our squad? Is it any different to having Ferdy, Freund or Friedel in charge? AVB needed outin' and Tim was possibly our only short-term answer. I'm inclined to think, as Shedboy says, that we need an experienced 'manager'. Sherwood, worth a go, I thought, in the absence of Andre, could well be in the Stuart Pearce bracket. Not confident to go into management with what they know. From Dalglish to Di Canio, arrogance and confidence are probably 'musts'. Hesitance isn't. Maybe? In Sherwoods' favour, he played two strikers who've hardly played Prem footie, leading to missed chances. The bigger issues were our 2nd half defending and central midfield pairing.
jerkinmahjurgen
DL's great plan to sack an uninspiring but at least competent manager halfway through the season without any obvious alternatives is looking better by the minute. He PERHAPS wasn't the right man but, in hindsight, we really should have kept him on until the end of the season. Sherwood isn't going to do any better.

I think we may have to gamble on somebody SOON, bo idea who BUT, apparently it'll cost £9mil to get Laudrup.
coopsieyid
Oh, hold on, turn that frown upside down. Apparently those DeBoer quotes were made a while ago, when asked about becoming the Holland manager, before they started talking to Hiddink.
coopsieyid
Italian – But he HAS backed the manager, he backed him 110 Million times in fact. The whole “AVB didn’t pick the players” is complete bollox. Anyone who knows a bit on the inside of THFC has said as much. As 82 pointed out, he backed him, he just picked the wrong guy in the first place. There is no way AVB could have carried on, he had lost the respect of the fans players and the board. SPU 4 LIFE – If I had just spent over £100m on players and had to sit through a 5-0 thrashing at home I think my face would have been a tad redder than levy’s. You know what, I would love to take one training session at spurs and tell the players what I thought. The players just don’t seem to realise how deep a hole they are in. They should know who they will be up against in their position, strengths weakness etc….a bet half the team dont even know which team they are playing in 2 weeks time!!!
hudderspur
82spursdebut, if you believe that Levy supported AVB and didn't interfere you are living in your own little cloud. If you are looking for a board supporting their manager you should be looking at Manchester United, they are supporting Moyes, as they should.
ItalianYiddo
longtimespur… In all honesty, I was at the game and I didn't see any other result coming. I'm still as positive about Spurs as I always have been. That will never change. Last night was not as great a performance as some are suggesting, in my opinion. Today, I'm not happy. Tomorrow, I'll be looking forward to Southampton.

Still, look on the bright side. That's one "worthless distraction of a cup" out of the way, just the other "worthless distraction of a cup" to get out of, "the Thursday spoon", then the wishes of many of you will have come true. See, I can be positive about anything!

ANDYID - "Be careful what you wish for that's all I can say, ridiculous at board level, ridiculous and fickle fans, embarrassed to be a Spurs fan today............"....

Yep, perfect post, in my opinion.
coopsieyid
Coopsie I cannot believe the ineptitude of how a multi-million pound business on the stock-exchange is being run. If all was not well behind the scenes and if Levy didnt rate AVB (after hiring him himself AND getting to know him over a whole year) why then give him the entire 100 mill budget to get players for a continental possession game! And now be left with a COMPLETE rookie at ANY level who judging by last night is a "up and at em" 4 4 2 merchant. It beggars belief. You are right we need a manager NOW. Or this whole thing will go pear-shaped very quickly. Get Laudrup in NOW. Can continue the continental possession more effective style and perhaps get more cutting edge out of them. Do it now even if it costs us 9 mill.
StillRickyVilla
Another thing – I’m not saying that ADE & BAE are blameless, in fact they’ve acted like petulant dicks, but our main problems have been lack of goals and no left back……yet ADE who looks perfectly fit to me wasn’t allowed to train with the first team and our best left back is on loan in the championship. I think its little things like that that rubbed levy up the wrong way.
hudderspur
hudderspur, you are 100% on AVB wanting the players we bought? You are the only one if so, and even if he did you must give him to the end of the season to work with a new team most of which had no PL experience. He was still in all competitions and within reach of top 4, I don't believe that he lost the players I imagine most are gutted. Mad, stupid decision.
ItalianYiddo
StillRickyVilla, brilliant post, but let's hope for a sale before the stadium build. Why? Because being ENIC the are bound to phuck up! Delays on the building works (if they ever start?) running over budget, Levy gets into fights with the architects, stadium planners and construction firm who pull out because they cant stand working with the control freak Levy. Then big Joe takes them to court and we find ourselves in a legal battle for another half decade or so, you know the normal Daniel Levy traumatic king of stuff. Much better Joe Lewis sales up now with the planning permission finally secured (or so we are told?) the land bought around the stadium and with still a reasonably good squad of players, because after the world cup there could be a lot more player departures. So much better that Big Joe puts the club on the market now before Danny Boy can do anymore damage!
Pele10
Levy needs to come out with a statement. Say what is going to happen from now till the end of the season. Either say we are actively looking for new manager or we will stick with Sherwood till the end of the season. Give us spmething Levy ffs. COYS!

One thing Sherwood said in his post match interview for the BBC was, we need a manager that's "compatible." He stressed it clearly. Compatible with what and who. Not an easy task, being right for the board, the players and the supporters. You never know until the man in charge is already doing the job. Always a risk. Always a gamble.
MAN ON!
82spurs .... that explains why he hasn't laughed or smiled for a while then!
Geofspurs
I think I must have missed something here, I really don’t understand why Levy is shouldering the whole blame for this. He is not without fault but he is way down the pecking order. The players first and foremost, then the manager. What if we pay the £9m to get Laudrup and he doesn’t do so well. Will that be another DL cock up?? There are so many people on here that write one thing and completely contradict themselves the next day. Some of you guys supporting AVB today need to scroll back to their comments after the city game, after the narrow wins against two relegation battling clubs, and then to the thumping at WHL. Jekyll and phuckin Hyde I tell ya..

Coopsie, Walker's is all about pace, very little else.
ItalianYiddo
Coopsieyid.....Tony Dorigo ..mentioned Walkers poor positional play. Bryan Robson mentioned Chiriches as not being dominant enough in the air, for a centreback.

Coopsie ... to take your -bright side- even further ... if we get knocked out of the FA cup and Europa, and then slump in the league ... it will be brilliant, not just shining, because we'll have absolutely no distractions. Couldn't resist that, mate. ;-) Hope you all good!
Geofspurs
Italian – I have no inside info mate so im just going off what has been said by ex spurs players etc when quizzed about it. They all reckon (or at least interviews I’ve heard / read) that there’s no chance that AVB didn’t have a massive say in who comes in….but not so much on who leaves

James1 – I think a statement from DL would go a long way. He needs to say something. Remember how long we were in the dark over AVB though?? Its clear that the departure of AVB was a hasty one and that no plan B or replacement was in place. THAT, is inexcusable from Levy, he can’t run away from that. If I were running THFC I would have at very least a shortlist of attainable replacements should the worst happen.
hudderspur
82spursdebut… What manager or caretaker doesn't say that. ;-)
MAN ON!
Pele - re delays on the building work. Are you local to Tottenham? If so, may I suggest you get your arse down to Archway Steel & point your finger in the REAL DIRECTION of who is to blame for the delay in building work. It's that Greek family who are demanding £5mil for their property, despite having a CPO to consider. They are the ONLY people holding anything up now, and them's the facts.
coopsieyid
Getting Laudrup doesn't fill me with confidence either but at least he has PL experience, seems like we are being heavily linked with De Boer as the agent of Frank De Boer has apparently confirmed Tottenham have made contact with him but not yet contacted Ajax, not sure how true that is.
Kong
He said more....but that was the main relevant point, out of what was quoted, for me.
82spursdebut
Coops - The reason there isn’t a lot about walkers positioning etc is because it’s just the norm now. Its every other week. He’s a player with a lot of potential but has gone backward in the last 2-3 seasons. Chiriches isn’t good in the air, I don’t think he pretends to be, that why when you have a defender like chiriches it is essential that you play him alongside a ball winner. Unfortunately, because of injuries etc we are struggling but I don’t understand why Fryers didn’t start next to him. Capoue is a midfielder FFS.
hudderspur
Hudderspur and Guvyer great posts!!
Ossie
You can't let a manager continue for another six months if he's lost the squad. Our signings were good. Paulinho scored three in his first six or seven matches. Shame he needed so much time to settle or he could've scored eight... Eriksen hit the ground running. Chiriches looks very classy. Capoue is ample competition for Sandro. Even service-less Soldado, a better fox than Defoe, but still only a Spanish Defoe, kept his nerve not once, twice, but three times early on from the spot. Sure signs of bottle, nerve and ability. But they've not been molded into a team, and their ok starts haven't been progressed. Sadly no continuation or momentum. Lloris is looking very shakey at present, but is clearly a very good 'keeper. Our confidence is shot.
jerkinmahjurgen
Regarding the game being "enjoyable", I didn't seeit, i didn't have to, the result is sufficient. we have just lost for the second time at home to one of the worst teams in the PL, who have won once away in the PL (at WHL) and they can't buy a goal, yet have scored 5 in 2 against us, this is of course a disgrace never mind enjoyable. What will be enjoyable is when we finally start looking like a Spurs team again, and can once again beat the dross comfortably at home, once more.
Frank
82spursdebut… I just hope we can get the right man in asap. Who knows who that will be?

hudderspur, writes, "I really don’t understand why Levy is shouldering the whole blame for this." Hudderspur, each and everyone of Levy's personally hand picked, personally chosen coaches have been used by Levy as his scapegoats throughout the past 14 seasons. Levy got away with it for 8 coaches, 3 DOF's, a new technical director (same thing) and well over 100 players purchased. But after this latest Daniel Levy, AVB fiasco Levy has finally been sussed by the vast majority. He got away with passing the blame onto the very people he personally choose to employ, the very people he then obstructed, undermined and thwarted as they attempted to make us successful for 14 seasons... But time has finally caught up with him, as it does with all dictators and bullies...
Pele10
Geof - EXACTLY, yet you & I both know that we are in for weeks (months?) of AVB & Redknapp related posts. What's the point? I can understand Redknapp popping into the conversation topic, because we currently have a Redknapp clone in charge of 1st team affairs, why else are both Redknapp's so vocal in their "Give Tim the job" shouts to the press? Redknapp just wants to see 'his way' be successful, because it gives him an "I was right" seat, to preach from. But he wasn't right, just as, if we continue to see 4-4-2 under the current guy, he won't be right either. It's not the 70s or 80s anymore, so stop trying things that were 'OK' back then.

People say "Man City play 4-4-2", no they don't. They with 1 winger (Navas) and use a creator on the other side. It's basically a seriously fluid 4-3-3, something I feel we have the players to replicate. That's just my opinion, though, and I'm never right about anything. COYS (please).

In gymnastics they often name particular moves after the competitor that invents them. i think that the conceding of a headed goal from a cross or corner, should be named "a spurs" it is the one aspect of the game in which we are comfortably the most prolific in the league, as the classic last night demonstrated once again.

It does not matter who the manager is or what system we play.Football is about scoring goals. The fact is we have spent over £100million and are still inadequate up front. The urgent need was for two prolific strikers and a playmaker. We had the money to get them.AVB wanted Soldado yet he does not fit the 4-2-3-1 system .Ferguson would have apoplexy with these "strikers". Yet I still hear no call or demand for competent goalscorers from anybody

shedboy2… Sorry to say, but I thought the same as you…. (Not sorry it's you that I agree with).
MAN ON!
Pele – I respect your posts and opinions but I think sometimes you try to pass off your opinion as fact. Yes, it’s essentially down to DL to select the manager, back him, support him, but it’s a 2 way street. You say it’s a hire and fire culture but what else can you do when the manager is making a complete balls of it. He can only go on what he thinks is right for the club, and considering he does spend the money (whether you like to believe it or not) it is always a gamble. Apparently in the discussions after the Liverpool game it was suggested to AVB that he could play with two strikers etc as we aren’t scoring and he basically said NO the formation etc is right. If I were DL I would have found it hard not to put him through a wall with that attitude. If you or anyone else could suggest a new owner or chairman etc who could do any better then I’m all ears. I think it was peter who mentioned it the other day but it’s all a moot point anyway. The chairman / owner will leave when they are good and ready, not a second before.
hudderspur
How long should Levy give managers? It wasn't just the 'Pool game. Levy see's what we see - it's been borderline poor since AVB arrived. The City game was the wake-up call. Three wins later, including two totally crap-to-watch struggles against teams even worse off than ours and we went behind in both, then 0-5 at the Lane? Even then Levy was seeking answers rather than p45's. He had no choice. Granted it's a tall order delivering 4th, but that's the target. Our results and performances have been rubbish and we've been lucky to maintain our coat-tail position. Everton, Newcastle and even Swansea are getting close to us. We're going the wrong way, despite a better squad than those teams. We've all the ingredients, but no cook.

Hmm, maybe one or two of you would be wise to read this

http://www.whoscored.com/Articles/c8-iteclvkemlnbost07qg/Show/Team-Focus-Explaining-Ajaxs-Style-Under-De-Boer

For those who can't read or are lazy, the summary is that his style is incredibly similar to AVB's. So similar that if you wanted AVB out for style reasons, championing Frank de Boer as his replacement goes a long way to showing how foolish you and I are. Hopefully it's a crap bit of writing, lol.
coopsieyid
Tim is part of the problem not the solution but I don't blame him...why would we appoint a man given a job by his mates dad to 1st team manager when he has no experience or qualification for the job? This is not some little fiefdom mickey mouse club is it? Levy needs to make it clear it's for a couple of games and then appoint a manager or more realistically get in a real interim Manager whilst we wait for the best to become available. Otherwise we're talking peter principle on steroids ("Employees tend to rise to their level of incompetence.")...
shedboy2
Just a thought, but was Levy scoring all our goals last season or playing in our central defence in the last two games?
MAN ON!
coops-Walker is not great at defending high balls into the area, never has been, this is why he is a good player and not a great player. People don't see the mistakes he makes as they are too focused on his pace and runs.
WorldPeace
part 2

People also say Dawson is rubbish, Dawson imo is the most important defender we have at the club. He is the one that does the dirty work when those balls come in but people only focus on his weaknesses, his lack of pace and his ability to get caught out and turned easily.
WorldPeace
part 3.

However, at the moment we do not have anyone that can head the ball away like Dawson, not even Vertonghen and certainly not Vlad or Rose, Naughton, Fryers so for me until we get better Dawson is number one CB. Now Kaboul may have been his replacement but Kaboul is so so unreliable with injuries, we need another commanding CB to take push Dawson and eventually take his role. Just as Chelsea need the same when Terry finishes. We all thought Caulker would be that guy and tbh the selling of him was a mistake imo although it may have been out of our hands. Still I would have played Caulker in the cups and Europa and rested Dawson just for PL games and see how caulker came along in the cups but its all academic now. I see Vlad and Vertonghen similar players and no way can they play together at CB neither of them are strong enough in the air imo.

I think our defense has been hindered by two factors. Firstly Kaboul, two players for each position Dawson and Kaboul, Vlad and vertonghen looks pretty good, but problem is that Kaboul had been injured all last season and is injury prone so it was a gamble and we are paying for it because we haven't a like for like replacement or cover for Dawson.
WorldPeace
part4.

We should have not gambled with Kaboul and Vlad is not a Caulker, they are different type of players. I have no problem with Vlad being similar to vertonghen, two players for that position but selling Caulker and not replacing him with similar, someone who has ability to head a ball out of defence who will put their body on the line like Dawson was a mistake, but I think we relied on that being Kaboul. Second mistake, LB. We already knew Naughton was not good enough as LB and so not only do we rely on him again, but rely on a youngster with little experience in Fryers, but even worse we bring back Rose who we also didn't know if he would be good enough, a loan spell at Sunderland doesn't make him a first choice top four player, huge gamble imo even if Rose has actually done well when not injured, but back ups relying on Naughton who isn't a LB and a young inexperienced Fryers, stupid, no other word.
WorldPeace
part5

Who made these decisions we don't know.

I can accept naughton as cover for walker even though he is not similar type of player, but one would accept that with his PL experience he would have done a good enough job if called upon in his natural position although I wouldn't say he is good enough for a team wanting to be top four, but we cannot have two top four players in each position, so fair enough, but mistakes that have and are costing us is the LB and injury prone kaboul. Did the club learn from King's injuries, we cannot afford to have injury prone defenders or inexperience ones if we want top four, simple really.

The next mistake that was made is attacking personnel. Last season we saw Defoe and Ade unable to make an impact, hardly scored in second half of the season and we know that Ade seems to be a difficult human being to handle. So after a woeful season we ought to be saying 'we can't rely on these two again' we need to sort out the front line. Now common sense says to me, if we can't rely on Defoe and Ade, then we need to make sure our striker can score IN the PL. So what do we do, we buy an unproven PL goal scorer instead of a proven PL goal scorer and to make thinks even more silly we rely upon Defoe and Ade as back up if Soldado gets injured, the very two strikers that showed us last season that they couldn't be relied upon, daft no other word for it.

Now some will say yes but we were playing loan striker so Defoe and Ade should be ok as back up and we bring in a replacement for Bale to play behind the striker. Bale scored how many goals last season often saving us. So once again common senses says we need to bring in a player that we know will score in the PL who can play behind the loan striker, so what doe we do. We bring in Eriksen, another player unknown to the PL, what a gamble, selling Bale who scored so many goals for someone who hasn't played in the PL.

I am not saying Eriksen is not a good player but to progress to me means we have to build UPON what we had, IMPROVE on what we already had, no dissemble it and bring in players that have no PL experience and hope they adjust quick enough to not only sustain what we already had but actually go beyond that and improve us. Absolutely stupid idea. These players would struggle to sustain what we had never mind improve us, especially their first season.

The the next mistake was the wing play. Last season it was obvious we needed a LW and someone to cover Lennon. Lennon is a out and out winger with pace, so we needed a similar player, who do we buy, that can do a similar job if Lennon gets injured, no one. So we play Townsend on the RW and play as an inverted winger, did it work No. By doing that we had no out and out winger on the LW, still same problem as last season. In the games Lennon was injured Townsend should have been given his chance and played LW imo not RW. Then we would have at least still had some pace in the team, he has shown he can play as an out and out winger on the LW in recent games, however, is he good enough yet for that LW as first choice, I am not sure but he would have been a good back up. So did we bring in a good enough LW and a good cover for RW. No, we didn't bring in a LW player that is naturally left footed and able to beat his player, so we play Chadli there, which again meant we played as an inverted winger. So the lack of pace on the LW from last season is still there. What we needed was a natural LW with Townsend as back up and a natural RW to cover Lennon, we got none.

however, we brought Lamela, what position does he play? RW, behind striker, LW who knows. It seems he likes to go central but starts on the RW. Truth is he hasn't settled because he didn't fit into out team. In the PL you need pace and wide players, this is why for all Lennons weakenesses we still miss him when he doesn't play. His pace and movement along with his defensive duties worry the opposition, so imo Lamela on the wing hasn't really worked, I think eventually he will play behind the striker, but will we play that way, a lone striker?
WorldPeace
part7

Then he competes with eriksen, can we keep two players of their ability happy?

So as I see it, the players we needed were not actually brought again, it seems we brought in players that are quality, but not the players we needed. However, AVB was trying to bring in a new system and may be he thought these players would do the jon, or may be these players were brought more for the potential sell on value, who knows.

Finally, the biggest problem we have is a board and fans wanting top four in a league that is difficult. Yet they sell our best players. I still say it why do we sell Bale yet Liverpool and Utd manage to keep Saurez and Rooney, simple because money talks to levy and in some ways I can understand that, he is trying to build a new stadium and compete at the top without the same investment, but on the other side, is he being too unrealistic expecting a manger to come in and take us to top four when he sells our best players. Its a difficult balance, a difficult job and now we are paying for it.

All we needed to do this season was buy a CB (if Kaboul wasn't fit), LB if BAE wasn't staying, LW, RW cover and a proven striker and most importantly KEEP Bale. I say here we upgraded in midfield. We were close when HR was here, we were close last season although the cracks where there, we could have done it this season, we did not need a overhaul, we needed to keep our best player, we need tweeking, we messed up.

WorldPeace the three weaknesses you've pointed out are the 3 things you don't want in a CB. Trust me, I've played in that position and after my legs started to go all I could rely on was my reading of the game and passing from the back. I had to revert to DM because of the pace. The youngsters left me for dead, even giving them 5 yards :( That was the time to pack up lol. Seriously though, you don't want a partner with those weaknesses. You have enough in your plate ;) COYS!

Then again, re the DeBoer article I linked, Surely how closely his tactics mirror AVB's is a positive?

What we need is someone to build on the restructuring AVB did and begin to use the really talented members of our squad in their best positions and crucially just get us moving the ball better. The indications from his time at Ajax are that De Boer may just be able to do that, which is great.

Still seeking out those positives lol

I like this post. It is well balanced with a sense of optimism and realism, without getting over emotional. Our Champions League aspirations are out of the window again for this year, but let's hope we'll see a return to entertaining attacking football and that we see some quality returning back from injury to shore up our cobbled together defence. "Anyway, the Dutch newspapers finally picked up the rumours about de Boer to us. It was mentioned on some very dodgy/unreliable blogs before though. But now, de Telegraaf, a big Dutch newspaper has published an article about it. Below I'll give a short summary of what the wrote.

According to them Franco Baldini had a meeting with Daniel Levy discussing Frank de Boer. They write we already had contact with Frank. We are looking at him as the ideal manager 'for the future' after his impressive displays in the CL. But we are knocking at his door at the wrong time as de Boer has some very clear agreements with the Ajax board. De Boer told the Ajax board he won't leave the ArenA mid-season.

Frank de Boers personal manager Guido Albers told the press he had no comment regarding interest from overseas/England.".......

FDBs agent speaks:

19 Dec 2013 12:19:00

Guido Albers has revealed Spurs have indicated their interest in securing his client as Andre Villas-Boas' replacement, but insists the Dutchman is focused on Ajax

The agent of Ajax coach Frank de Boer insists that Tottenham are interested in hiring the former Netherlands international as Andre Villas-Boas' replacement.

Tim Sherwood took charge of Spurs for Wednesday's 2-1 loss to West Ham in the Capital One Cup, and Goal understands he will get the job permanently if he impresses.

But Guido Albers told Voetbal International that despite there being no official approach, he is aware of Spurs' interest in the De Boer.

"Through several channels it became clear to me that Spurs would have an interest," he revealed.

"But the club did not come to Ajax. So from our point of view there's not much to say about it. Frank isn't even thinking about it. He's fully focusing on Ajax."

De Boer is regarded as one of Europe's brightest young coaches, having led Ajax to three consecutive Eredivisie titles and a series of impressive displays in the Champions League.

Any move to White Hart Lane would see the Dutchman reunited with former Ajax stars Jan Vertonghen and Christian Eriksen.

There is a world of difference between dealing with a load of ambitious, naive, keen young lads, looking to react to advice and instructions from a former pro, to dealing with a group of mostly experienced, high profile, highly paid, full international players. The sooner that both Tim Sherwood, and more importantly Daniel Levy realise this the better. To continue on the current course, is fraught with likely disaster. The sooner we get to 40 points the sooner we can relax.

SRV, it's obvious that you are an advocate of AVB and his style of football and I respect that view but disagree. To me you are confusing high-tempo with outmoded tactics. Liverpool on Sunday "ran about a lot" and played with a winger and played high-tempo. They looked like the hugely successful Liverpool team of the 70's and ripped us apart, partly due to the fact that our players were not fit enough to compete with them physically and partly because of AVB's inept tactics and team selection. When teams set out to defend deep a high tempo approach is essential if you are to break them down. AVB's style was to wear them out by retaining possession, but in reality this just made it easier for them to defend. Last night we played good football for most of the game with possession stats in excess of those returned by AVB's teams but with a positive attacking style. Adebayour showed how to link play and score, Dembele was getting much further forward and Lennon and Walker both carried threats. The real problem is that if you look at any combination of our attacking players, there isn't a single one that has "goalscorer" in their current CV's. Of all the players AVB is alleged not to have wanted, Soldado has not appeared in that list so either AVB's judgement of the player's capabilities was flawed or he did not know how to use him.....lone striker he is not. Whatever "system" the new manager wishes to deploy it will need to incorporate lots of running about with tempo and some goalscorers.

This is one paragraph from a long article about De Boer at Ajax, to follow on from what coopsieyid has been posting………………….It was back to basics: 4-3-3, one-touch combination football. Ajax's defence, midfield and attacking lines play much closer to each other – increased mobility, fluidity and synergy in midfield has allowed their passing game to flourish, as well as enhancing their creativity and control. There was also a return to orthodox wingers, slightly changed today, preferring wide forwards, on occasions using a deep-lying forward (or 'false nine'). "We used to play with a No10," De Boer told Champions Matchday. "But now we play with two attacking midfielders and one holding player. But the philosophy is the same: create triangles on the pitch, engineer a numerical advantage in midfield, and create danger from that." The brand of football being showcased in Amsterdam is one purists have come to enjoy
MAN ON!
…………. Sorry, some more on De Boer………………………….. To some keeping the ball is looked down upon, but for De Boer it's everything, not just because it's the only way he knows how to play. He knows without it his side isn't very good, in that sense a passing fetishist, like Van Gaal. If you can "pass at speed" there's a strong chance of selection. However, playing in this manner has an advantage, keeping possession conserves energy. His team seldom passes more than ten metres during a build-up phase; let the ball do the running, but even a pass needs to be the right one: must be a metre ahead, never into feet, this way circulation is kept flowing.
MAN ON!
Coopsie - I'm pretty sure that De Boer is the man we want but I'm pretty sure it will be very difficult to prise him away from Ajax mid-season. He is, by his own admission, an 'Ajax man' and he won't leave them in the lurch. Maybe we can line him up for the summer when he can give Ajax a chance to replace him without too much disruption. In the meantime....we have a problem! I've heard today that MAYBE we could look at bringing in Jupp Heynckes (currently 'retired' but did it all at Bayern) to work alongside Stefan Freund until the summer. I wouldn't be too unhappy with that.

Spurious and MAN ON - Cheers fellas, I'd happily take DeBoer. Logically speaking, there was nothing wrong with AVB's approach, or what he was looking to make happen on the pitch. It was just his inability to transfer his ideas into performances, not knowing exactly how to implement things, if that makes sense? DeBoer has a very similar approach but, as appears awkward for AVB, DeBoer knows how to turn the thought into an actual process that works.
coopsieyid

2. THFC don't pay their manager much.
3. Sam Allardyce is the 13th highest paid manager in world football!!!!!!! 13th!!!!! The dildo brothers must be ******** mental.

Was all energy at the start, but then reverted to kind for large parts and when Townsend and Lennon swapped we were exactly where we have been for months. Ade proved he has been fit for weeks and is our best forward by far. Defoe proved he really struggles however we play in many ways. When Townsend got injured Sherwood should have put Holtby in there for his energy and chasing down ability. SIggy can't play central midfield at this level. Main thing I saw last night goes like this.....if you put a collection of mice in a confined space for 18 months you can pretty much teach them to do the same thing over and over. Now, after that period trying to get the mice to break their habits will be difficult and time consuming.

coopsieyid
Just looked up a bit of info on De Boer and seems just as inexperienced as AVB. Alarm bells rang when he hasn’t managed outside of Holland. I think he would be a massive gamble and certainly not who we need at this moment. Heynckes has an outstanding CV, truly amazing, but at 68yrs old he isn’t going to put up with any of the crap Levy pulls so he is pretty much ruled out. If Rijkaard has got the passion back for football id take him in a heartbeat, but the last I heard he doesn’t really seem to want the stress of it. Maybe we will get some unheard of low level manager who will be the next Diego Simeone or Klopp?? Doubt it but one can dream.

Ferdinand believes that Villas-Boas was informed by the board that UEFA Champions League qualification was a requirement, with Spurs currently five points adrift of fourth place.

"We lost Gareth Bale and spent over £100m pounds. When you spend that kind of money you forget the fact that they need to settle in.

"Most players that come into the Premier League need about six months to a year for them to settle in - six months if they hit the ground running.

"But in all honesty, the management and the people above were all saying that qualifying for the Champions League was a minimum."

Yet we still sacked the manager!!.....

ManOn – That’s my point, to go for a manger who is still in his managerial infancy would be crazy, more than crazy! MAN ON!
Managing in the PL is also not the same as in Spain, Italy or Germany.
MAN ON!
Realistically, we are not going to be able to prize any top candidate out of their current jobs at this time of year. Laudrup has lots to play for. So does DeBoer. So do Capello, Martinez and most of the other people who should be being looked at. Hiddink and Rijkaard could probably both be had. Do they want it? Hiddink doesn't stay anywhere long and he is 67. Rijkaard, while I like him, does not strike me as the man to succeed on less. I still believe we need a task master who will get the players playing for him and executing fundamentals. My man remains Coyle for the balance of the season. WE cannot afford to have the players run the team and we cannot afford to dilly-dally on this. It needs to be done now. The next two weeks could be season over. WE need Europe next season. Were it not for the 8 Europa games, there would be a lot of players griping about playing time. Players will not stay if they are not going to play. Further, players like BAE, Kaboul, Gomes who are out of contract at year's end should not be leaned on. WE need to look forward, not back. There has been no desire to sign these guys on extensions, so either do it, or they are part of history. Kaboul is a tough one. His injuries seem to be career limiting. I also cannot see Adebayor being there when his wages fall to the pittance that is 90k/week. WE are building a team, not a collection of individuals. If they are not part of the team going forward, they should be moved on ASAP. COYS
peterballb
AVB has played all of the players that were brought in. They may not have been his plum choice but they are all useful players. They just have not all found their way at Spurs yet. No surprising. I don't think we'll ever hear from AVB that he didn't want this player or that. IMO, it was about being told who to play and how to play that made the situation unworkable. COYS
peterballb
We do need someone experienced and solid for the rest of the season ASAP. Summer is the time for someone permanent, unless that same man is ready for the job right now. I can't see who that might be.
MAN ON!
Very True ManOn. That’s why it’s better if any manager from outside the PL has managed in more than one country. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with brining in a manager from any league BUT just like players they will take longer to settle. That’s why I think we need to go for an experienced manager who wouldn’t be shaken by the task. I just don’t know who that manager is!! Ideally….and don’t shoot me down right away…….Id happily take Mancini.

IF we go to Southampton on Sunday & play the exact same, out of date 4-4-2 crappy formation as we played last night against the mighty & unbeatable West Ham, we WILL get smashed. Also, assuming Lamela's brother was correct on twitter, Erik will be playing on Sunday. So, one would assume that he would replace Townsend, on the wing. I'll tell you this for nothing, Lamela is NOT A WINGER. Use him in a 4-4-2 & you may as well just tell the kid that we've got no interest in utilising his talents.
coopsieyid
Could see him implode and disappear ... which would probably please some people!!
Geofspurs
Agreed Coops - Lamela is not, nor ever has been a winger. 4-3-3 please, Ade Soldado and Lamela up front.
hudderspur
Seems to me Benitez would be a good call, still like to check out Martinez love of Merseyside, Hoddle as interim if one is required, Sherwood no thanks. I wonder how Alladyce would do with a good set of players from all over the world? At the moment he finds WHL a wide pitch. De Doer, Ajax culture is good, Dutch league weak 50/50. Laudrup should be in the frame. We can spit all over the oppo with Rijkard. I guess all those people who love Suarez so much (if you know what i mean harry) will like Frank the spitter. Standards, make mine a double.
tophobunty1882
Laudrup? Not sure he'd 'fit' st THFC, or with Levy...

1) Swansea chairman was reportedly upset that their record signing hasn't played much whereas Laudrup insisted that he's from a different league and will need time to settle (LAMELA)

2) He was upset with the chairman that the money wasn't invested in the type of players he wanted and had innumerable disagreements regarding the transfer budget

3) Swansea have struggled with handling both European and league games(We dropped most points after a Europa fixture)

4) He had a fairly successful 1st season but this season the results have been up and down

5) Their new striker hasn't been in form so far(SOLDADO)

6) His team hasn't exactly lived up to the possession fluency based football they are famous for this season (THFC STYLE)

I am not against him but we all are familiar by now as to how it would surely end. He also has a rather large history of falling out with his superiors, not something that sounds like a match with Mr Levy, lol.
coopsieyid
hudderspur - That is 'trouser tightening' to think about, lol.

Geof, sadly you're probably not far wrong.

Jus want to quickly point out that the post about Laudrup was not to anyone in particular, or anyone at all. He wan't even being spoken about this afternoon, I was just randomly posting my personal musings.
coopsieyid
13/30 and he has played much more than Lamela and scored what 6-8? Laudrup has got his team peforming above expectations since he has been at swansea, they are performing about on par at the moment in spite of playing in this pathetic round the world in 80 days thurdsday spoon. He would not be my first choice but balance is always better than control
tophobunty1882
coopsieyid I guess I am clueless because I am Romanian and I have seen Vlad making mistakes time and time again. Just because he is the best Romanian player doesn't mean he is top 4 EPL quality.
logos8
The answer to all our woes is simple. Levy should be the new manager of THFC! I'm sure he get's on very well with himself.
MAN ON!
Coopsie ... actually, I read your response to me again and realised you were acknowledging I was correct ... but it was too late to take back my post ... it's 1am and I think I'm past it now. catch ya later, mate. ;-) Night all.

Hey Shed, Townsend hamstring hey, happy days are here again? Hughton not interested she, wants to get sacked at Norwich first. Damn he was number 546 on my list.

tophobunty1882
Coopsie, the lack of players playing and together is due to settling and injuries. AS I have repeatedly said, if Kaboul, Sandro, Lennon, Rose, Adebayor had all been available all season long, players would have been introduced earlier. If Lamela had shown up and worked his socks off, he'd have played more. If Eriksen, Capoue, Chadli, Chiriches had not been injured we'd have seen more of them. This has all forced players to be introduced too quickly (IMO) and many playing out of position. None of this has been ideal and yet, when AVB left, we were in all four competitions and there surely was optimism. What really annoys me is that there is no plan. There is no way in Hades that Sherwood was the man to succeed AVB. In essence, by my appreciation of things, AVB has pulled Levy's pants down and given him a kick with a frozen mukluk. Since that seems to be what Levy has been doing to AVB all along, who's to begrudge him that? There were three choices, sack him, let him do things his way, allow him to walk after a golden handshake. They agreed to do the latter. I suspect the first would have cost Levy more and the second was unacceptable to the board. Just guessing, but we are certainly in unexpected territory. COYS
peterballb
Get Ossie back! 5 attackers and a striker, but instead of Kevin Scott and Jason Cundy, we would have Verts and Dawson. Kind of like when you shag the ugly girl at school because she is willing to do anything. Its wrong, it will end in heartache but boy will it be fun while it lasts.
vicspur
Coops, wow, there's a name from the past. Barca legend Bakero, what a player he was.

Who: The Goat
When: 17th December

The Goat said: "This is coming from a new source, The Goat is hearing that Defoe is done and signed for 13 million dollars and he will be earning 110,000 dollars a week. Only thing yet to be decided is January or summer.

Also, the only hold up with the stadium is a Greek family owning a house where the centre circle of the new pitch will be. They want 5 million, we have raised our original offer of £1.5mil to £2mil".........
coopsieyid
Mancini isn't a bad call. That would wipe Ade's big grin away, lol. He seemed to get a bit mental towards the players in the end, though. You know things are dire when Rafa starts getting a mention. Another mentalist, actually even more so. But they're both strong characters and that's what we need. Both experienced winners who promote attacking football. Would prefer Mancini - he's just a typical Italian. Benitez is with a missing screw, even other Spaniards are left scratching their heads.
jerkinmahjurgen
Coopsie, what I have been hearing here in Toronto is that Defoe is done and dusted. Drake was involved in the recruitment. He will be well paid. Deal will be announced in January and he will remain on loan until the MLS season starts. THat's what I keep hearing. Still cannot fathom why or who is going to get him the ball but it's a great deal for a 31 year old. He'll love Toronto and the fans here will love him. He really seems a very down to earth and affable young man. COYS
peterballb
Why would Benitez leave Napoli? They are third and in a CL spot and three points out of second. Why would Napoli let him go? COYS
peterballb
Benitez? If the players didn't think AVB's tactics were confusing enough!!!
vicspur
Vic great post errrrrrrr berry berry welll errrr berry berry wellll and a name change to Tottingham............... Pierre no idea why he would leave Napoli, i would think he would be a good manager for us, better than the bloke we just had. Statistically speaking and all of that jazzz.
tophobunty1882
Vic thats a good point Benitez is a bot tactics heavy, but has succeeded with them in the Prem and recently and with a similar set of players to the one AVB failed with. He would not be my first choice, but might possibly have the edge on Sherwood in terms of experience. Peter I guess with what you think about Defoe being totaly sheit he will have found his home in a totally sheit team and league, kinda like a rest home for the partially retired.
tophobunty1882
Peter if those players you have listed who were already spurs players had been fit and playing all season how would that have made it easier for new players to get playing more? i dont understand that. surely they have a better chance of playing with those established players injured. ps I think Chadli is still injured.
tophobunty1882
lol. I forgot he was back in a job but he was mentioned earlier in the thread. Thing is we need to keep the long out of the shot if we can. We need a strong character. Experience would be preferable. And if it's gonna be here at Tottenham, he needs to bring good football with him. Someone available, affordable and up for it. Better if these boxes are ticked. These two also tick the winners box, which is a plus. I've mentioned they're both nuts, 'cos I, like anyone else, can be judgmental. But personal criteria such as is no barometer for success. I've never supported a call for Rafa to Spurs 'cos he's a fruitcake. Recently thought the same about Mancini. But because they cracked before doesn't make it a constant, and the person one DOESN'T like could be perfect. That's why the change from me. Or maybe it's our current status... The best manager we ever had is out there, but what criteria to pick him? Strong, promote good footie, affordable, available, up for it - all musts. Experience is pretty much a must. A winner would be a plus.
jerkinmahjurgen
logos8 - May I ask why you posted to me about KiriKesh & you being clueless, and him making mistakes? I'm genuinely baffled.
coopsieyid
Geof, rest well, young Sir :-)

Peter - Really good post, re AVB and 3 choices etc.

Jerkin - Have to agree about Benitez, don't understand the attraction at all. Inherited a very good CL winning Liverpoo squad, then proceeded to dismantle it until it was left with the $hit that Dalglish & Rodgers had to try to weed out. That said, thanks to fecking Comolli, Dalglish had a fair amount of crap himself. Benitez, the guy who wanted to get rid of Alonso so that he could sign Gareth Barry, I'll pass.

Peter - Thank you for the Defoe info.
coopsieyid
I thought for some reason that Defoe was going to sign in Jan but be loaned straight back to us until their season starts....
shedboy2
If those players had been playing, the others could have been brought in at a more measured pace, as we did with the players last season. Players had to jump in immediately and AVB had to use players as they were needed as opposed to as how things best suited them. Paulinho, Townsend, Sigurdsson, Holtby, Capoue, Naughton and others have all had to put in a shift for the shirt in less than ideal conditions. At no point this season has AVB or Sherwood been able to field a best XI let alone determine who that XI might be. It's going to take time and that will apply to whomever is manager going forward. COYS
peterballb
shedboy2, that is what I am hearing here in Toronto from multiple sources. Sign in January, loaned back to us until the MLS season starts. COYS
peterballb
Just a quick pointer. 2 of the more respected 'ITK' people (ryantegan & Gards) are having a discussion on twitter about De Boer, apparently he's deciding tonight. I'll keep you informed as quickly as possible.
coopsieyid
I asked ryantegan if he thinks there's anything in it, he simply said, "I said on twitter that I expect we will know more tonight. Ajax have a cup match tonight so he will have to face the press"...

So, nothing earth shattering there.
coopsieyid
Peter, what about all the gusto by the guys in your camp when Baldrick was out there buying them claiming how great they were and were ready to hit the ground running? you know all those press releases and stuff coopsie posted all through the window backing up your camps opinions. Remember them? There were about 200 of them should be easy to recall. AVB would never have known that if there is such a thing because he isnt very good.

I'm not sure we have to write this season off. I've seen some suggest that a half-decent interim manager could get us through 'till the summer 'cos the seasons' ****ed but I don't think that's the case. I do think Sherwood is too green. Time is one thing we haven't got. Our defending in the 2nd half... Was that 'cos Dawson wasn't there? Jeez... Or because Sherwood didn't hit the nail on the head at half-time? What caused our capitulation? If it was something spot-able and correctable... we haven't the time for those types of learning-curves. In the topsy-turveyness of the Premier league we're still very much in the top4 mix. We shouldn't let go of that or give up on the season. But we need to act now. If Mancini is available he could be the best bet. Sherwood could still surprise us. Was he saving a few for Southampton? What's he gonna DO against Southampton? So far it's Tim 0 Fail 1.
jerkinmahjurgen
De Boer or Rijkaard for me. Coops.....Frostbite and no fingers. Never mind not being able to post on VS....What about the cans of Strongbow?. Before you answer straws, you ever tried opening a can with a straw.

I don't recall people suggesting that the signings would be ready to hit the ground running. I won't speak for anyone else but I said, from the off, it would take until the New Year for AVB and the fans to really see what we have. Paulinho, as an example, has played a lot of football and done a lot of traveling prior to the season. He got thrown in as a main cog. Capoue too. Dawson had to play way more because Kaboul had hit some setbacks. Lennon goes down, Chadli goes down and now we have Sigurdsson and Townsend on the wings, with no other options. Naughton at LB because Rose is down. And on and on it goes. Had we had a healthy, established XI to work all the new guys in to, things would have gone better. You deal with the cards we dealt. The early speed bumps really didn't materialize and now the sky is falling. COYS

Frank De Boer: "If there is interest from Spurs, I am very honored. But i have my full attention at Ajax." #THFC

One thing that most certainly isn't, is a "no"... If anything, it says to me, "Let's see what you have to offer, I could be persuaded to not give my full attention to Ajax". Or even a "not now but in the summer". Either way, there's absolutely no "I'm not interested" etc.
coopsieyid
We missed a trick in NOT playing Soldado when Lenny and Townsend played as wide wingers and provided good service into the box. He proved he can score when this is the case. Now Townsend out for a while will not be possible as effectively. Maybe time for Lamela to feature. Chiriches and Dawson for Soton at least gets us stable CB's. At least the defeat saves us from having games of ManUre A, Arsenal A, Citeh A as our first 3 of 2014. Could have been a disaster. Still might be with the first 2. We were so open last night and played like we used too.... winning FA.

rumors say that cardiff owner has given an ultimatum to Malky Mackay that he either resigns or he gets the sack. Would he be good enough as an interim until the summer? I would rather take him than keep Sherwood
logos8
Great buy does not equate to "hit the ground running". Those are two different things. Many of us suggested that they were all coming from other leagues and countries and that it would take time. I will only speak for myself. I suggested we would not really see the fruition until the New Year, at earliest. Holtby looks to just be getting his feet and he speaks English and has an English parent. It is not easy. They are all coming in to the most competitive league in the world. It takes time. Our owners do not grant that. That is the issue. Sadly, many fans are equally impatient and have expectations above the reality of our resources and situation. COYS

didn't Newcastle go through a same thing after bringing in a lot of new faces? they barely avoided relegation after finishing top7 and now they are challenging for top7 again. The gel theory does have a point, but again... my personal opinion is that if Chelsea saved their season by sacking avb, then he wasn't the right man for the job. If only we would have lost some decent 2-0, 3-2, 1-0 to man city, liverpool and west ham, then maybe avb wouldn't have been sacked, but the atmosphere of disappointment was slowly building at whl from the hull poor performance, to west ham and culminating with the historic 5-0 which left Levy seeing for the first time a lot of spurs fans leaving the stadium with 15 minutes to go. Maybe he got scared and tried to avoid a complete train wreck by sacking avb. Even that to some would be justifiable, but I honestly believe there was much more to the story behind the scenes. I hope avb proves us wrong and goes on to win titles and trophies at another club, as I wish him well even though i don't like him, but I doubt that he will prove to be the smart manager that some thought he was.
logos8
Peter, they were saying HOT THE GROUND RUNNING and saying it countless times most notable about Soldado....do you understand what I am saying now? you dont have to agree of course, but its all down in writing. Bottom line it was utter stupidity and god damn awful management to spend over 100 million on 7 players and all 7 were untried and not tested in the prem...utter crass ***** poor management and the fool who resided over that as a manager deserves to be sacked. The chairman who put up the cash and stodd by and trusted it was being wisely spent must learn from this experience NOW and if he ever lets this happen again his boss should consider replacing him.....and I am a supporter of Levy in many ways.....commercial very good, football issues average....
tophobunty1882
Expectations, Peter, that's exactly the problem. We dismantle every season, we start again and expect. Bale was on the verge of being loaned out as he played 16 games was it? without a win and was considered a bad omen. Modric took at least six months before he showed his worth yet we bring seven young players and expect to compete with City, United, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Arsenal.
ItalianYiddo
no we dont Italian, but we dont expect the sheit we got/have and the rank ***** poor management by a clueless clown, the guy is pants yet you still have his posters in your bedroom...
tophobunty1882
That £100m spent might be money well spent, we don't know yet. We could have purchased other players and AVB would still have been sacked as fans were moaning about his style.
Kong
logos, he should have been given the season with full support and if at the end of the season we finished poorly and didn't win anything, sack him, he has failed. As it stands we have no manager, out of a cup, tough game coming up with a team that spent a lot of energy and still lost the game. Levy has done again and will do it again, I pity the next manager.
ItalianYiddo
Most of our new signings will come good, some might not make it but the £100m spent us not a waste.
Kong
Kong, AVB's style is nothing new, we knew what we were getting. We want gang ho football, bring back Harry or cheaper option his mate Sherwood but Levy wanted a new direction, 16 games into the season with all to play for he wants to change direction.
ItalianYiddo
kong AVB was sacked because he wasnt very good. it would be great is that 100 million was well spent at the moent it looks anything but. how do you know most of them will come good Kong? based on what evidence? Italian he had the whole of last season and it got worse this season. how many of his posters do you have in your bedroom?
tophobunty1882
Kong, whether they were AVB's choices or not I think overall they are all good players and will come good. Allardyce said it would have been a miracle to get so many players clicking all at once, but what does he know?
ItalianYiddo
Italian, yes we knew AVB's style so whoever we brought wouldn't have mattered as levy would have sacked him anyway. We could have spent the money on pl experience players and I don't think it would have made a difference. We had Dempsey and siggy last year with pl experience and fans still moaned.
Kong
AVB's win percentage in this "terrible" season was 50%. He also went 10-0 in the cups. Wenger said it would be very disruptive to make more than a couple of changes. Another manager who knows nothing. Moyes believes it is way too early to make such moves. Self-serving or might his experience tell him it is so. Wonder where Fergie would be but for the time he was given? It takes time. Time was not given. COYS
peterballb
My first choice would have been Ancelotti, as that was never going to happen my first realistic choice would have been Brendan Rodgers, second choice Martinez but Levy gave us AVB and taking into account that we have sold our best players in every season he started he done as well as expected, I won't go into the statistcs but his record, points and wins is better than most. So to sack him at this stage of the season is mindless stupidity. COYS,
ItalianYiddo
Topho, they are good players, vlad is a good defender, capoue is solid in midfield, paulinho has shown glimpses of his class, Eriksen needs more games but you can see his class, lamela has hardly played and soldado needs a better style of play, he would have suited last nights game, chadli I am not sure yet. We just had a manager sacked and you have called him clueless which means he didn't play these players to their strengths with the rest of the team. Are you against all these signings or just soldado and lamela?
Kong
Peter, the big worry now is who's going to take the job knowing the disgraceful way we conduct ourselves? Someone mentioned Mancini, not in a million years he would consider coming to us, I am afraid we are looking at the likes of Hoddle who's desperate to get back into management.
ItalianYiddo
As it happens I was against Hoddle's sacking too, way to premature, the poor guy has to work with the likes of Gary Doherty he is then given some money to spend on his players only to be sacked before he has a chance to work with those players. Nothing changes.
ItalianYiddo
Interesting to see the experts on here who thought that what they saw last night was 442 up and at'em are now discussing the relative merits of yet more foreign superstar managers.....hmmmm.
Harry-Kari
I think it will be another foreign manager, rumours of de boer or Benitez.
Kong
peter 10-0 in the cups....lordy me, we can beat 4th raters now and claim greatness...you got his posters on your bedroom wall too? ............................. Kong, the only 3 i would feel were decent punts all round were Vlad, Capoue and Eriksen...Paulinho being possibly a good punt also, the other 3 look like big risks at this moment........Italian if we are a disgrace would you not think it time to consider supporting another side? i seem to remember you were one of those who would not sign Suarez because he was a disgrace. Do you have any nude ones of him?
tophobunty1882
Karry Kari...i agree mate this little gang does have its own very, bit like a cult. I was at the game last night and yes we made a fast start, but why the feck shouldnt we at home instead of that limp dick stuff from AVB....442 it might have been on paper but the way Ade played it was more like something other than 442 and he came deep and was all over the shop really, do his credit in a positive way.
tophobunty1882
AVB can't manage his players. He's clearly got good attributes or Moaninho wouldn't've had him. But he couldn't get Chelsea going and we shouldn't've signed him. He done better than I thought he'd do but it's been dire to follow at times. And got a lot worse towards the end, when the players stopped pressing as high and hard. Did that coincide with Ade coming back? Along with the recent hammerings? Would it have been different if Ade stayed out of it? I remember Ade saying he didn't hit AVB. Heard no more about it. Anyone know? Maybe something that affected BAE as well? I wonder if Ade has come back and rocked the boat? The offensiveness of that photo obscuring another possibility, perhaps, that they even knew? Sacked 12 hours later? Anyway we were awful to watch so makes no difference really. Should never have hired him. Bring on Mancini.
jerkinmahjurgen
At home against Wet Spam they're only gonna sit back, not like when they used to play a bit. That's the time to play 442 if any. Ade was like an anchor-man at times as well, taking the ball from Capoues' feet. I wondered if he'd forgot Dawson wasn't playing... Andre had to move on and I support Sherwood holding the forte but he's being judged by every second. The spammers defeat was a massive fail. After being one up. We'll learn more against Southampton but if that's his current level we need someone asap. Foreign of not.
jerkinmahjurgen
jerkinmahjurgen, fair point on that we should not have hired him, but would you have sacked him at this stage with the West ham and Southampton games coming up?
ItalianYiddo
Mancini would never come to us, too much of his own man he knows the score.
ItalianYiddo
night night Italian, well done you will get browny points from coopsie in the morning for being able to ignore me again, well done.
tophobunty1882
Harry-Kari…. Who would you like to see as our next manager?
MAN ON!
Under Harry we had a good 14/15 players and we ALL could name our starting 11. We were all moaning about lack of rotation and when he did try it in the EL NOBODY knew wehat they were doing. Corluka, Kranjcar etc etc. Now we are stronger as we have a good 25to be able to rotate and AVB was doing that. NOBODY again though knows what our best 11 is now. That to me didn't matter as we were proving hard to beat and winning with many clean sheets early on. WE had the best defensive record in the first 10 games. Then the press and some fans latched onto we had scored fewer goals than some in the bottom 6. AVB tried to play a bit more expansive, we stopped the pressing game, kept the high line and got hit for 6, literally. As soon as he changed our approach he was doomed. The Press NOW VERY HAPPY. Who's next on their list. WE STILL HAVE A VERY GOOD 25 though so keep the faith.
CoysRus
Tony Gale said last night that we never have been able to defend crosses. Well my point above shoots that one down. Oh and why is it we always have an opposition analyst in the studio or at games. V Liverpool - Carragher,Gerrard and Souness FFS, V Wet Spam - Tony Gale, V Sunderland - Alan Smith as expert summariser. When are we ever going to get a PRO THFC biased chap.
CoysRus
The way I understand it is that avb was a great coach. He could see he only had one exceptional player and turned him into world class. The short side of that stick was that once he became world class we became surplus to his requirements and he went to bigger and better. Avb wanted suitable replacements but did not get what he asked for. That was the beginning of the rift with levy. Levy starts pressurising avb to play players which he did not want in the first place and some others which avb has lost his patience with. Now we have an explosive situation. Avb begins to feel shackled, undermined and sub-ordinated. He loses his desire for spurs. I think he secretly welcomed the heavy defeats because he was pizzed of with levy and wanted to pin levy's back to the wall and also prove a point at the same time: mess with me and I will show you my 'don't give a s h I t' side. We had a world class manager but he needed support from his chairman and didn't get it. Now we are at a crossroads and facing freefall and midtable or even worse. Levy's next move is possibly his most important since enic took up ownership at spurs. My choice would be for him to swallow his pride and go on his knees to martin jol. If that fails then go on bended knees to
neymar
What I saw was exactly what I expected and feared. A return to a dated system with players ill prepared to play that way. Contrary to consensus there is nothing wrong with the system employed by AVB. Most teams play variations of it throughout the league and Europe. Football has evolved can't people open their eyes and see the way most teams set up playing 442 is pointless.
judge
Manon, I now nothing about the foreign names in the frame except Capello who I would not want given his lack of man management skills and boring style of football. As for the rest Laudrup seems to have run out of steam after 1good season and isn't available anyway, Pochitinho? who knows, another gamble and the rest of the foreign contingent have no experience in the EPL so are all gambles. I would prefer a British manager, maybe Hoddle or even Malky McKay who will be available shortly (waits to be vilified!). Point is, especially with foreign managers, past performance is no guarantee of future success as the finance industry points out. The problem with Baldini is that he knows little about English/Scottish managers so we will probably finish up with another foreign experiment.
Harry-Kari
Topho, at last someone who looked beyond the fact that we played 2wingers and 2strtikers and assumed 442. In fact we played a fluid 433 with Adebayor complementing Siggi and Dembele, linking play and then breaking forward. Front wide players defended as needed and the ball was moved quickly. Finishing as usual was the reason we didn't score more, and as previously noted, ongoing defensive frailties let us down at the back. Anyway, just as AVB's tactics have been defended/excused for the last 18 months I am sure any manager that tries to play progressive, attacking football will be subject to abuse on here.
Harry-Kari
Harry-Kari, I would prefer a British manager myself but I can't think of one that is free and that I'd like to see at Spurs. I would like to see Hoddle take over for the rest of the season and go from there. It's a tough call.
MAN ON!
Man On, agree that's probably the best solution at the moment, but I can't see Levy doing that after he has fired him once. Then again, I didn'think Levy would fire AVB either so I guess anything can happen. It's a difficult balance in that gambling on a manager with a perceived "name" like DeBoer or Laudrup can attract players to a club more easily than say a Sean Dyke that someone mentioned the other day, but really at the moment you have to ask who would want to come who is an established manager and which players would want to come whoever the manager is with the shenanigans created by Levy over sackings and transfer activity? That's why I think Levy will leave Sherwood to run with it at the moment because it is a step up for someone who is a club insider and therefore to a certain extent a known risk.

Having read this I wondered why nobody else has mentioned him. I like the way AM play just wonder if he could cope with the PL on a week in week out basis. Hiddink yes, but that's a no-go from the off. http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/blogs/jan-molby/simeone-hiddink-ideal-christmas-presents-spurs-140932660.html
