'If It's Football, It's Vital'

In The DNA?

Once again in the game against West Ham I saw what I've been seeing for all of the 30 odd years I've been a regular at White Hart Lane.

For 60 minutes we bossed the game, on the attack with West Ham reduced to long balls. And then we switched off. Suddenly we were giving the ball away, going backwards, making basic mistakes. I saw it, Allardyce saw it and West Ham took advantage as any half decent team would. If this was a recent phenomena I might call for a change of management, but it isn't. It seems to be part of the club, its like there is a flaw in the DNA.

Ferguson's United always played to the final whistle, just as the Liverpool teams of the eighties did, whatever the era, whoever the manager, we just seem incapable of doing that. I don't know the answer, I just know that as long as we play that way we can never be successful. Forget about playing with flair, just let us find a way to change the culture, to start playing for the whole game.

I think it was a combination of wearing ourselves out and West Ham getting stronger. They let us keep possession for most of the match and defended well. Once again we couldn't take advantage and put the ball in the back of the net. When we did score The Hammers stepped up a gear and we couldn't cope with the pressure. We were out muscled and caved in defensively. Yes, it is a familiar story. Who knows why?
If you don't score goals, you can't win games.
I'm not sure if that's a fair assessment of the players. At the very least i dont think that's what is at fault. We dont seem to have the ability or determination to get a second (or god forbid) a third goal. This is what causes last minute troubles. You see it week in week out. If it's David vs Goliath or Goliath vs David. If there is a 1 goal margin with 10-15 minutes to go the opposing team will throw the kitchen sink at you. Now - We have the players that can score goals (theoretically) and we do certainly have the domination for at least 60-70% of most matches we play. Under AVB we would sit back and try to see it out in an organised expression. However - on Wednesday night we say a team that was not used to the level of intensity we had used for the opening 70 mins. That coupled with long balls aimed in at our makeshift defence destroyed the precious 70 minutes. Now - a am hugely concerned about Timaaah Sherwood - I think his 442 formation is extremely naive. Did/has anyone watched much of the youth level/next gen games he was in charge of and what formation did he play? GOALS GOALS GOALS - Lennon is not the man. I'm really over the little man always wearing a Spurs shirt. His attitude of late has been the worst of any player on the pitch. He always looks grumpy and moany. Add to that he has completely stopped his tracking back to aid the defence. He has been a good servant over the years but he is not and has never been a goal scorer or creater. He has relied on excellence around him (Bale, previously Modric, previously Berbatov) to make him look decent and then and allowing him to skate by and score hi bi-annual goal. He does not suite 4-3-3. He as mentioned offers no impact. Townsend - Is not ready for the helm and responsibility left by Bale. Despite his efforts and similarities in play with the Welshman it will take time as it did the World record player to get to where he is. Lamela - ***** knows right? He has hardly had a kick for whatever reason. Chadli looks to slow to have enough impact in the PL. Looks classy at times - but i just dont think he has the requirements for a PL winger. Defoe and Soldado - much of a muchness and neither suited to a lone striker role. Oyveh. I was so hopeful but now our defence looks weak or attack looks impotent and our midfield looks fatigued. Not to mention our keepers growing bloopers. Oyveh.
Culture starts at the front door, the club from top to bottom needs to want success on the park.I have always felt Enics first priority was a successful bottom line and if success on the park came as well then great(by success I mean trophies-of any description),if not then so be it.
In the end of the day we were pretty unlucky. 10 corners to 1 told the story and double chances. We had 99 crosses and they scored with one of their few. It's football, get over it. No need to Poirot every game lads! I liked Sherwood's team and the way we played.
sandroman - If this was about Enic I'd have seen this pattern for the past 10 years not the last 30.
Mellowchaos please try and get the sand out of your vagina. Your depressing read is boring and unproductive.
willfry, We were not unlucky! Poor finishing and bad defending is not bad luck. Play at Southampton like that and we'll get another thrashing. We scored 1, Spam scored 2!
Jod ,don't I know it, but Enic are here now and have been for enough seasons to build a winning culture, if that had been at least an equal priority to their building their bottom line.Almost old enough to have forgotten most of the crap that Sugar and previous owners have put us thru previous to Enic.
sandroman - So essentially anything and everything is Enics fault? Presumably if they go then this mentality that was there long before they arrived will magically vanish ?
Jod,regarding building a culture of success at the club,YES,because they are there now and have been for 13 seasons,we are discussing building a winning culture aren't we.My point is if they had been half as successful at filling the trophy cabinet as they have been at building the clubs value we wouldn't be having this discussion, the culture would be here. But when they do move on with a large profit made and our trophy cabinet is still empty I wont begrudge them the money but I will begrudge the fact that they made it without bringing any success to the supporters who get none of the cash and phuck all else.
there would not be a THFC if Alan Sugar had not put his money in. He saved the club ffs
Also Jod,when they do go yes this mentality will still be here,WHY? because they will not have changed anything to achieve a winning culture(on the park) during their tenure.I'm sure their business plan gets reviewed regularly.
topspur53, that's very true….
sandroman - Do you realise what you've just said, that if Enic left the inability to play the full game that has been there for at least the last thirty odd years would magically dissapear ?
More comments on ENIC I see. If they were to go, as some wish and pray for, who would we get. The likes of Vincent tan? Or get lucky with free spending Arabs alas city. It's pot luck out there lads. I'll stick with what we have for now and see where it takes us.
Dublin Hotspur
The game turned on the introduction of Miaga. Our makeshift centre pairing could not handle him in the air. the game should have been over long before with more confidence in front of goal. I watched the extended highlights knowing the result and really enjoyed those 80 minutes or so of flair and purpose. With a more solid defence and rotation through the midfield to maintain intensity, this will come good. Please stay fit Manu - your goal was sublime.
Love totty
apparently we are interested in a guy called
Jod our inability to put the ball in the net makes the rest of our activity a waste of time. If you have an Aguero or a Suarez to aim for the others are probobly more motivated.
jod.... just on the "playing for 90 minutes" point. I thought that AVB managed to get rid of the "last minute" goals conceded and in fact got us scoring them instead. We were harder to beat when playing our woeful pass-walk-pass game but it bored everybody to death. I think that, apart from the City mauling, which was more errors than anything, we were harder to beat but just couldn't score. How many times did our shots amount to over 20 in a game. How many times were the large majority of those off target or their GK played a blinder. We just couldn't score enough and that hasn't changed with the less defensive approach of the last 3/4 games under AVB. As for the gung-ho Sherwood set-up against Spammers, who knows, with 2 aerial dominating CBs like Kaboul and Dawson we might even have won that. Neither Capoue or Chiriches are dominant in the air and that's what lost us that cup match. Plus, as usual, not scoring enough goals! All IMHO COYS
michael dawsons recent performances are being affected by chopp[ing and changing personnel, imo he is still our best centre back
cant make head or tail of the betting on next Tottenham manager, everyones going out in the betting
Dublin responsible fiscal management of a club does not always go hand in hadn with the FIFA 14 wizkids desire for instant gratification. The fact we have been established as one of the top clubs in England, have invested money and are looking to progress means nothing because ENIC haven't gambled the family home on winning a title. I am firmly in the "better the devil you know" camp. Isn't the last five years of the premiership and now championship littered with enough fly-by-night sugardaddy disasters for the ENIC-OUT brigade to know they shoudl be careful what they wish for?
Slurms McKenzie
Ghulamvile, Verts is our best CB we just haven't played him there as often as Dawson, a fit Kaboul put s dawson in the Ha'penny place, a more experienced Chiriches playing with a reliable CB partner is probably more versitile then Dawson. I have always maintained he is a great squad player but is no where near our best CB!
Slurms McKenzie
Exactly slurms. Very careful.
Dublin Hotspur
I rate verts, but not as highly as some of you guys on the forum
Ghulamville the Verts from last season was miles better then the verts of this season when he was continually played out of position and was clearly disillusioned with the role he was asked ot play.
Slurms McKenzie
longtimespur - Good point, but worrying. If the only way we have to maintain focus is the AVB way we are basically screwed.
All I know is that Spurs must be in all our DNA. Otherwise why are we all so concerned, whatever our views?
jod... real worrying, hope Sherwood/new manager can get them doing both. COYS
JOD, it's due to lack of balance. Back in the 80's 90's, we had mostly good forward lines backed up by crap defences, coupled with non tackling CM's. There are years which were exceptions to the rule, such as 86-87 when we challenged for all the domestic comps. Recently the reverse is true. Whilst we are normally more solid at the back, we don't have the quality front. Since the Berba Keane partnership was dismantled in the same TF window, we have had either average, short-term, makeshift or just crap up front. Result, we can't regularly score goals. We are then always vulnerable to a sucker punch.
Cleveland ARTSPURS
Jod,just for you.Read my last post again,i didn't say our lack of winning culture will magically disappear.WHY ? Enic has never attempted to build a winning culture, not previous, not now, wont in the future,so they will have just perpetuated our lack of culture over the last 30years (your time frame for this discussion).I appreciate what Enic have done stabilizing our club but when they do sell they will leave the building with their pockets well lined , and you and I and all the other diehard supporters will be left grasping at more shattered dreams . What the future holds I know not but until someone comes in that treasures football success as much as financial success we as supporters will continue to wander when ?
Sorry ,wonder when ?
