'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Tottenham Hotspur vs West Bromwich Albion

Vacancy filled vs Vacancy Applied for! West Brom are still on their managerial merry go round, so whilst Keith Downing awaits his fate and tries to breathe life back into Nicolas Anelka, "Gooner" Sherwood has got his 18 month contract and resuscitated Adebayor!
And as our merry men go off to play in Sherwood Forest please remember we steal from the rich but we also don`t give to the poor, so no more home defeats please!

Harry may not be back in charge but his protégé is and so is 4-4-2!!! Yee ha! No more worrying about how the opposition is going to play and making dirty great dossiers on each and every player we have to face let`s just go out there and play some football the Spurs way.
As far as the team is concerned we look like the Christmas Turkey, a bird with no wings! Lennon abdominal injury and Townsend out for some time. Dembele should be fit as is Sandro and Rose is good. At the back Vertonghen and Kaboul are all in the treatment room. Paulinho is still suspended. However, we do have our secret weapon, our 19 year old French defender Nabil Bentaleb !!! Oh yes! Where did that particular rabbit get pulled from?

Against Saints Eriksen looked better, Lamela put in a shift and Soldado actually looks like he might have a buddy to play up front with! We were a mess in midfield in the first half against Southampton, it was like watching a game of table football for a while, but Sherwood, Freund, Ramsey and Ferdinand obviously roasted a few chestnuts by the open fire at half time! As they say in managerial circles: hold the player by the balls and their hearts and minds will soon follow!

When the boys step out at WHL on Thursday we want to see the ball and the players going full belt at the opposition. Downing has West Ham coming up next and so his squad will be camped in London for Christmas and stretched, so every player will be important to them hence the wish for Downing to get Anelka ready. Matej Vydra finally got on the score sheet against Hull and must be in contention for a start as Anichebe is probably out so Anelka maybe feeling a bit like Adebayor, isolated rather than "disrespected". West Brom talisman Zoltan Gera may be back after a long term layoff and he will bring some leadership to the West Brom team, who are flirting with the bottom 3 but whose goal difference is the same as ours!

In Sherwood we enter a different and more unpredictable era. He has 18 months, which is a season longer than any of us thought especially as he has admitted to being a Gooner before the job interview.....nice one Tim you muppet! 18 Months is about as long as you get nowadays when taking charge of Spurs! Some say Sherwood does not have the pedigree to be a Prem Manager, and the fact that Blackburn were making enquiries for him to be their next manager may not exactly be a ringing endorsement. But one thing you can say about our Tim is he has done the hard yards and he will have the respect of his players because he has played for our club and our country.

So here we go again! A win against WBA and Stoke and we are back in the hunt. Let`s hope that Sherwood does not become Deadwood for the sake of our club, we deserve better than this constant managerial merry- go- round.
Daniel, I know you read Vital Spurs! All we are asking for is a bit of consistency, some continuity and some success. Stop sacking our managers and selling our best players!

Should be an ideal game for Soldado,Chadlii,Eriksen & lamela to really cut their teeth(should all star IMO).
WBA are dreadful & i fully expect Soldado to have one of his better games,& to never look back, his work rate has been great but it just hasn`t clicked for him, hoping for it to start tommorrow, just takes that one game.
I`m going 4-1 Spurs,Soldado brace

MAN ON!
After the last two matches at the lane, I'm hoping for a clean sheet.
MAN ON!
Shut up Fanny . Lennon is one of our best players. You'll see when he has two strikers to aim for
willfry
No faffing, gaffing or fannying around please Spurs! Up the Lilywhites!
MAN ON!
We'll need about a half dozen matches to have a real feel for what Tim is about and whether he is indeed the man. My sense is that tomorrow's match is one in which a 4-4-2 is appropriate, but I'd like to see the formations mixed up a bit when we play "the big boys." Hard not to get scorched without a five-man midfield against the likes of Citeh, although AVB's team seemed to get scorched even with five players in the middle. It's nice that the team is well schooled in a high defensive line, although that's been shown to be too easily exploitable, but an astute manager could mix it in at unexpected times, such as when we are behind late and need to up the pressure to grab the ball and a goal. Anywho, let's let Timmy show his stuff for a half dozen matches before going after his scalp. The hectoring of him before he'd settled in seemed over the top to me, counterproductive. Let him breath a bit and see whether he can breath some life into the play. At least the era of anal retentive football seems to be at an end.

Happy Christmas everyone, whatever the matter, this blog's contributors bring all accounts to view. Cheers for the reads. Fanny, good team, but TS seems to think he revive GS and might stick with him.
ardone
No more anal? :[ Surely he'll keep 442 for these next two matches? Defence picks itself, really, as does attack. In the middle, I think Sandro will prove vital in this formation. Eriksen should keep his place and mix it with Dembele in the middle and off the left. Lamela on the right. Lovely to have options. Defoe, Holtby, Chadli, Capoue, Bentaleb... Noticed a few other youngsters in the provisional squad as well. Not forgetting our Barcelona-esque Carroll. Seasons greetings, everyone.
jerkinmahjurgen
A very, very winnable match tomorrow. Lloris-Walker-Daws-Chirices-Rose-Sandro-Lamela-Eriksen-Chadli-Adebayor-Soldado is my XI. I guess Tim would pick Sigurdsson rather than Chadli and maybe Capoue if Sandro is not fit.

Lennon has to play. Ade and Soldado have to be up front. Chiriches should play, but shouldn't use his head!

Great Boxing day coming up ... hit the highway for a ride on the bike, hit the beach for a swim in the Indian ocean, and then watch the lads at 11pm tonight. Doesn't get much better than that. Who said there's not a God!! COYS!
Geofspurs
3-0 Spurs! COYS
Geofspurs
We really need to start recovering our goal difference. That's one stat that AVB wouldn't have wanted to see in his legacy!

Whilst I believe we can still challenge for top-4, as the top half is very tight, I just have a horrible feeling the GD may come to bite us on the posterior. Still COYS! Rather fail trying!
Critical_Spur
Hope everyone is back from the festivities fully fit and smiling. Let the Sherwood era begin in earnest!. COYS!
Critical_Spur
Critical ... I agree. It could make all the difference in the end. I also think that we should not worry too much about what other teams are doing; we should concentrate on averaging 2 points per game, which should secure a top four place. We'd need to win the next 4 games to catch up, which is not likely to happen, but the points tally should remain our priority, obviously! It doesn't matter who we beat to get them, but, if we beat the bottom half teams and win or draw against the top half teams, it could be enough. The amazing thing is that we are still in it, so maybe AVB did not do too bad and it gives Sherwood a base to work from!!
Geofspurs
Geofspurs, The amazing thing is that we NEVER really gelled under AVB and somehow still find ourselves with a chance for a top-4 spot! Like Maurinho said, "It's an unbelievable title race". Long way to go and we can put a run together, you just never know. Feet firmly on ground, so let's start with 3 points against WBA and a positive performance in front of the home faithfuls ! COYS!
Critical_Spur
Totally agree Critical. This is going to be one interesting season no matter how it goes! Win the next two and it starts looking very good again. I thought Arsenal were going to create a decent gap for a while there, but now, it's unpredictable to say the least! COYS!
Geofspurs
Geof/Critical. Whoever puts a serious run together from now until May will win this. Sounds obvious I know, but that's the way it is. We could still get top 4, but consistency is now the key.
Cleveland ARTSPURS
its still in our hands, we are 6 points off 1st not 6 points off 4th, we never played well this season only game was 2nd half against newcastle we destroyed them. AVB had to go as something must of happened behind the scenes, and the ade issuue etc, AVB was to cautious and to negativeat times.
123spurs
if we keep playing daws im afraid it will be harder as he is shocking all heart aswell as brainless, slow, ball watching etc, any manager plays a high line with 2 slow CD should be sacked
123spurs
123Spur, With Vert and Kaboul still injured, unfortunately Daws has no competition. However, a) we are unlikely to be playing the high line under TS and b) we will see more YOUTH introduced. There may be other gems waiting for a chance like Bentelab. Those that follow the youth team may be able to shed some light on this. COYS!
Critical_Spur
Cleveland ... You're right, but it's looking like it's gonna be hard for anyone to put a run together at the moment ... which makes it even more interesting!
Geofspurs
123 ... I've got massive respect for Dawson as a person despite his limitations. Realistically, as Critical said, there's little choice at the moment so he has to play. When we're back to full strength things will change.
Geofspurs
We have still yet to see the back 4 of walker, chiriches, verts and rose once. Not a single time have the been paired together this year. If we could get those 4 consistently playing i think that would make a world of difference. If we win tomorrow and against Stoke all the other teams ahead of us have losable games the next 2 we are gonna gain on some or all of them. Critical few games here for Timmy and the boys. Bring it on. COYS.
YankeeSpur23
Been chatting with a mate & we're both hoping the Caulker deal had an exclusive buy-back option for us. We need him big time & I'm still baffled as to the ease of his transfer (only a buy-back makes any sense). Anyway, against West Brom I only expect Sandro to replace Dembele & TS goes with basically the same Team who beat Southampton.

Its a VERY valid point that Goal Difference could play the deciding factor in next seasons CL qualification. I believe in the highly talented Squad we have & I feel that this could just be a blessing in disguise, 1 thing he must surely be guaranteed of is his position until the end of the season. If not, then our Club will become a bombardment for each & every negative word in existence! Good luck TS & COYS
True Spurs Supporter
New young hungry manager. young talented hungry squad. 3 fit hungry strikers. Hope they haven't eaten too much xmas excess, for now, is the time to close the gap at the top....i.e...3 home games in 4, all winnable....if spurs are really Hungry, for success. "Come on you Spurs".
82spursdebut
To those that were questioning the wisdom of bringing in 7 new players; Just as well given the amount of injuries and suspensions. Good shout about Caulker as long as it's for a similar fee sold for. Top 4/5 team of players is what we have. I still believe our squad quality in depth is only bettered by Chelsea and City. What I am saying is I still believe our pre season objectives remain minimum top 4. TS clearly states he knows the club inside out. No reason why he'd need time to hit the ground running. Dare I say, Harry did when he took over. When Levy commented on 'getting the best out of our talented team and having a strong end to the season'. I am sure top 4 is what he had in mind. We were awful as much as City and LPool were good. If TS can inspire and motivate then I really don't see why we can't put a decent winning run together. I can see Us winning 4-2 today.

Morning all. Hope you all had a great Christmas day. Well, would like to see the defence a little tighter today, and hopefully improvement from the likes of Lamela and Eriksen if selected. They've not done loads wrong, but i'm hoping that if included they'll start to show the skills that made us want to sign them in the first instance. Going for a 3-0 win ( as always).

Apologies...The missus has arranged for us to have guests for the afternoon, so highly unlikely that it will go down well with me disappearing to watch the match online, on this note if anybody would like to write a post match article, i'm sure Ox would be happy to put up later. Obviously i am not going to be in a position to do an article, for reasons just stated. Normal service will return at the weekend when hopefully i'll be able to comment on our 3rd win in a row. For all those going to the game, have a great day and sing your hearts out. Would be good to see a post match article as i feel you don't always get a true reflection from the snippets of highlights that will be afforded me later on today.
Cider spurs
Cider ... Morning?! Good evening! So, looks like we both always have the same prediction ... which proves the heart conquers the mind! I hope the defense is a bit tighter, too, and also that Ade and Soldado show what they are capable of! COYS
Geofspurs
Considering our current POOR GOALS DIFFERENCE, I do not wish WBA score against us today!!! In fact, I will be LIVID if they have a shot on target (DAWSON ARE YOU READING THIS) - as we need to bridge the gap and catch up with the top 6 teams on goals difference. I pray this doesn't cost us come May!!! All that said, its about time we gave some team a good licking - 9 nil>>> THIS WOULD MAKE MY NEW YEAR, COYS
DaSPURS
Spurs win obviously, but I'm also hoping for a consistent performance for the bulk of the ninety minutes no more jekyl and Hyde matches!

Evening Geof!!...yep, i'm always a 3-0 man. Problem being the 1st time i started with the old prediction lark, it was against W.Ham in the league. We all know how that went down. I've had to keep at it, that one hurt. Be nice to see Soldado score 1 or 2 today. Clean sheet and a good win. Won't get to see it, and i presume if you do it'll be the early hours for yourself will it not?.
Cider spurs
Slurms....That's a fair comment REF: 90 minute performance.
Cider spurs
Cider ... The games at 11pm my time, WA is 8hrs in front of you. A clean sheet, two goals from Soldado and one from Ade will do my just fine, mate! COYS

only 7 new players to gel...good job we can add bentaleb! so much for gelling...btw he's not a defender, not even a DM he's a CM more attacking if anything....Fanny adams -I'm expecting that same line up....
shedboy2
Unless other teams around us get some heavy defeats, and we win a handful of matches by large margins, our goal difference won't improve enough to give us any real advantage. It's wins that we need. Scoring 3 away from home is great, but also conceding 2, is obviously the same as winning 1-0. Our defence needs to tighten up, as much as we need to score more. COYS!
MAN ON!
yep - win the next two games, don't buy anyone in January, finish 7th...hype up a summer move for a Manager, hype up moves for a player or two...just before season tickets are due....buy a squad player and go again....who says I'm cynical.....ba humbug!...;)

If there's an easy game in the prem..then this is it....I'm expecting us to knock the stuffing out of them like yesterday's turkey!

Hoping for a good performance and the 3 points. Will be interesting to see the line up, will bentelab jump ahead of others or has Sherwood now seen enough if the team to pick them.
Kong
Sherwood: "I’m not trying to be Harry Redknapp but it’s a simple game, isn’t it Sherwood: "If you can’t pass ball to your own team-mates, you have a serious problem because you are going to have to keep on defending." Sherwood: "I want the players to enjoy what they’re doing"' let's hope we enjoy what the players are doing as well.
Kong
Totally agree Man on!! Would love us to Spank teams 5-0 9-0. I can see us filling our boots with goals, unfortunately with our current defence and state of play, I think they'll be goals conceded. We need wins, hopefully big wins, narrow wins lucky wins hard fought wins undeserved wins I don't care. Just want us to climb the league. I am also hoping that any change in our play will bring the best out of our recent investments. If we sold now, I doubt we'd get our money back on any. I can't believe any of our newly signed forward players were happy with the tactics under AVB. Nor do I believe the Lamela rumours. I expect him to stay and get better. I am in more hope than expect TS to improve our play to bring out the best in Eriksson Soldado Paulinho Lamela and Ade
strawboy
MAN ON ... I agree. I don't think we've got any chance of competing with the goal difference of the top 5 or 6 now. We'll just have to make sure of the points!
Geofspurs
Man on said it, the goal difference is too big now to make up so there's no point worrying about it although of course we all want to see teams thrashed. Hopefully, in a way, the team realise this about the GD. It means that if we are losing, we may as we'll go gung ho as it won't make a difference losing 1-0 or 5-0 except for pride. I'd also like to see us really put teams to the sword. No more playing for a 1-0 win. I really like AVB but it irritated me when we'd settle for slim margins
BrooksySpurs
As for team, well I think Tims teams will be more surprising than AVBs an that's saying summin! But I'd go for Lloris, Walker Dawson Chiriches Rose, Lamela Eriksen Capoue Chadli, Ade Bobby Soldado. What do people think of Chiriches? Fantastic footballer, my kind of ball playing CB no doubt. Buuut, he can't win the ball in the air. And I don't care who you are, you simply can't have a CB who can't win it in the air. West Ham, a terrible side, beat us pretty much because Chiriches can't win it in the air. It really was that simple for me.
BrooksySpurs
I like Chiriches but prefer him at LB.
Geofspurs
Steve Clarke is a very experienced coach. In his first job as a head coach, with WBA, he takes them to 8th in the in the PL. In his second season the Baggies narrowly loose 4 matches on the trot and he is fired. Will they improve a great deal without him? We have in Sherwood, a new head coach with nowhere near the same experience as Clarke. I'll be pleasantly surprised if he can greatly improve Spurs. We may get more entertaining football but will the end result be a positive step forward? I bloody well hope so. Up the Spurs!
MAN ON!
I love Fanny but I love Lennon too, think he might be injured though?...Not sure Dembele is fit either..
tophobunty1882
Without using the hackneyed "must win" phrase, this is in the got to win category. we have already lost 3 home games in the league, and 1 in the Capital 1 cup by Xmas. This is simply unacceptable, there is no point whatsoever having the best away record in the PL, if you can't be relied on to win at home. This and the next game v Stoke (H) are opportunities to play Sherwood's preferred 4-4-2 gung ho system, to pressure the opposition, and hopefully get 6 points. I just hope he has a plan B or even C before we go to the cauldron that is Old Trafford, otherwise I fear another embarassing hammering on the horizon. The same goes for the upcoming FA Cup tie at the library.
Frank
I think Lennon is out of this match and for the next three weeks.
Kong
A word of warning; The Baggies beat Man U at Old Trafford and have drawn with both Arsenal and Chelsea! (That's why I made the point about Clarke).
MAN ON!
West Brom have it in them and they have as much to prove as us. May be they should hire AVB.
MAN ON!
MAN ON ... I take your point, but past results are usually meaningless, especially between two other teams. The Saints had only lost one home game until we arrived. I think it's all about who turns up on the day and who wants it more. It'll still be 3-0 to us!!
Geofspurs
tophobunty1882 You said we play better with Lennon,I am still to see evidence of that.
Lamela & Soldado will tear WBA a new one today.

I'm certain Tim will want us to be on the front foot from the off, after the week we had before the southampton game and coming away with very good result was positive. Same again and 3pts will do for me.
spu 4 life
A win to Hull would be a nice start to the games tonight (or today!).
Geofspurs
Against the Saints, at one point I saw Tim and Sir Les both waving their arms around, at the same time, directing the play. If we add Freund to the mix, the players will get as confused as they looked with AVB in the technical area. At least Ramsey has a cool head.
MAN ON!
I can't see why people are virtually writing West Brom off. They have had some very good results and will pick things up soon. The main problem I see, is that teams like that tend to build themselves up to play us as they regard us as a big club and then they do us over, use us as a springboard to save themselves. I can see this being a pretty hard fought game with only one goal being the difference between us. 3 - 2 Spurs.

NICE article on Sky:

http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11675/9088185/premier-league-tottenham-boss-tim-sherwood-pleased-with-harry-redknapp-comparisons

I like his ideas, e.g, simply put: "I am not trying to be Harry Redknapp but it is a simple game, though, isn't it?

"If you can't pass the ball to your own team-mates, then you have a serious problem because you are going to have to keep on defending.

"That's what we did in the first half at Southampton. But moving forward, we just have to try to get the players better."
Critical_Spur
Fanny, I know Lamela's cute, even a little Ronaldo-ish in looks, but there the comparison stops. "Lame", as short for "Lamela", is what he's been in every Premier League game he's appeared in. No pace, gets knocked off the ball too easily, doesn't go forward, doesn't defend, a total waste of money imo.

Fanny adams
Fanny ... Lamela worries me a bit, but, to be fair, he has not had a consistent run in the league yet so, maybe!
Geofspurs
man up and give us a strong home win.......coys
rovinella62spurs
Teams don`t do well against Spurs,we just do badly against them.

Parking the bus is translation for poor attack play more than it is great defending,& IMO a poor excuse.
Against newcastle we had bare shots but not one was really testing of Krull.Clinical finishing is the key,not give the goalkeeper constant saveable shots that he should save or in Paulinhos & Townsends case, smash it in the stands.Talking about pro footballers not Sunday league.
Fanny adams
Geofspurs I do agree, but i see what he`s trying to do in games but it`s just not coming off for him.The moment it clicks for him opposing teams will start to hate him & we`ll start to love him.Same with Soldado, both are putting in the shift,i respect that & they need to put that class into consistent performances.

IMO Soldado & Lamela are trying too hard to please,a little more composure & we have a couple of great players on our hands.
I hope both start today because this is a game for them to really make their mark,if they can`t do it at home to a very average West brom, then maybe they never will.
Sherwood just needs to tell them to relax, play to their strengths & do what they do best.
Fanny adams
If we are to loan him out or sell him, I'd say, give him a decent run in the team, allow our new coach and our new approach before we move him on. If Lamela needs to be moved on them do it as a complete last resort. As it stands he hasn't played anywhere near enough for a fair assessment to be made. If he's chronically homesick then well..... As long as we get our money back... In cash rather than cash plus cast offs.
strawboy
F-A, I think Ade will play an important role in lifting the confidence of, not only Soldado, but the whole team. We've needed a leader on the pitch AND a strong mentor on the touch line. We've had neither. IMO, Ade has already brought that leadership on the pitch. Passion and guidance from Tim can only get better.
Critical_Spur
Hiano, you described Lamela just about right.
Moscovite
I have a feeling Soldado will finally deliver today. He's been short of confidence lately. 1:1 then :-)
Moscovite
Critical_Spur I must admit i struggle to see how Dawson gets on the pitch let alone be captain.
Sherwoods first decision should have been to give the armband to a better candidate & someone who actually can lead the team.
I would`ve gone for Dembele personally,or even Lloris.Dawson should not be captain.
Fanny adams
writing lamela off? really? wow...Luka was crapola when he came in...knocked off the ball didn't track back etc...and he got a run of games...not until he went left did he start getting rhythm and pretty soon he could play anywhere...but let's knock a kid because he didn't set the world alight in his first game!...

So AVB played with two defensive midfielders at home now Timmo chose none at all. From one extreme to another.

F-A, I agree about Dawson. I am not the one for sentiments, nor for the 'spurs through and through'. I believe in selection on merit and to suit tactics and formations required to achieve the objective. Just a shame we do NOT have depth in that area. Does Velkjovic play in defence?

Moscovite, I wouldn't panic about the midfield. I think TS has set up to suit what WBA have to offer in that dept. I DO like the energy of Hotby and Chadli, We have enough on the bench to change to plan B imo. COYS!

PS>, I was getting a little bored with our 'powerful' midfield. We were NOT achieving much moving forward. So this line up makes a refreshing change.
Critical_Spur
Capoue must not be in Sherwood's plans, thought he would have played but Holtby must be playing that role. Don't know if Defoe is injured or not. Lamela us our only striker option from the bench, lamela never starts a home league game.
Kong
I guess Capoue is being saved in case we have a CD injury, may not want to risk him getting injured, i hope its that and not that he doesn't rate Capoue over Siggy and Holtby. I guess with so many injuries and if Capoue is being saved for CD then you can justify Sherwoods selection in midfield, who else is there.

Sigturdson in pitch and lamela on the bench fetch lamela must be chicken sheit. Harder game today now

So Kaboul, Vertonghen, Fryers, Sandro, Dembele, Paulinho, Lennon, Townsend, Defoe unavailable. That's gotta hurt. It's gonna be tough if we have Eriksen and Holtby in centre midfield but can see the logic of playing them together as we can pull back Chadli and Adebayor for set pieces.

Very open game. We've gone from being a very defensive team to being defensively inarticulate. I suspect it has a lot to do with not having Verts at CLB as Keereekesh best position is the CRB position. However instead of Capoue coming in to make the shape more defensive I would like to see Bentaleb come on to replace Holtby as this would be a more attacking move. The only way we win this game is to score more than them! Right now they have looked more dangerous than us in last 10 minutes.
jvd
Mmmmmm; well having taken the lead as if by magic we give a stupid goal away from nothing, top goal from Eriksen who when we signed him was mentioned as one of the best free kick takers in europe, this is going to be another one of those, we have to score one more than you games, our central defending is awful, but that said they have no protection, nothing wrong with attacking, but put one player in front of the back four.
spu 4 life
Back to the Spurs way, leaking goals, silly mistakes, poor defending but going for it. Ade needs to up his work rate, Soldado too, Chadli non existence, weak in C|M and we can now see Vlad is not ready to be first choice but will become a very good player, Dawson struggling again, Walker missing Lennon. Well the first half went quick, different to when I was watching under AVB but Sherwood hasn't got the balance right yet but in fairness so many injuries.

really not convinced by this gung-ho approach of sherwood's. Before it all goes negative and Tim out on here, a poor result for a game which again we dominated, the lack of a clinical finisher did for us today. Sloppy defending for their goal from Chiriches who has been poor at LCB, Walker and Rose looked very good, but CB's and holding midfielder have to do more as a result. Bentaleb looks so much more compose then Holtby does little wrong and always plays the smart ball. Chadli looks nowhere near a 7 million pound player, Lamela starting to show signs of settling in, although it looks like he's been getting Diving lessons from Ashley Young! Dawson solid if touch slow at times, Eriksen set pieces looking a lot more threatening, Just never happened for Ade ad Soldado today. Siggy was solid of unspectacular but needs to offer more of the left wing. m going to blame the performance on the mid-season change and payers getting used to the idea of playing football again! We have a lot of injuries and most to the first team but still two points dropped at home again. Steven Reid should have been sent off for too Bookable offenses and Their Dawson should have ben booking in the first half for a tackle from behind on Soldado. Nearly 67% possession, 20+ shots on goal and only one scored - did AVB get let back in for Christmas???

Only saw the second half. Made me think that it doesn't matter who the manager is the players we have are sub-standard. The number of misplaced passes, the poor ball control and general overall weakness of the MF players was woeful. Bentaleb looked class when he came on, Rose looked good attacking but woeful defending and Chiriches made Dawson look awesome. Overall, a very disappointing performance and result. Perhaps it's time for Shaquil to replace Nogaldo? Still Stoke to look forward to at the week-end.

I like the new tactics that make players look more relaxed, but still there have been too many average performances today. The choice for players on the wings didn't help us either.

a very frustrating game to watch. It is becoming evident that the magnificent 7 were not quite the acquisitions they first appeared to be. Erikson's free kick was world class but every other part of his game is economy class and Soldato looks to be worth a fraction of the price spurs paid for him. Similarly, Rose is not quite the missing jigsaw piece that, during his lengthy absence, he was described to be. However, i still think that there is something to Lamela and that he will be one of our best players by the end of the season. Still, the game was reasonably entertaining.

Not moaning when things are $hit does not make you a better fan,in fact it makes it look like you`re not bothered.

IMO the best fans are the ones who do boo & moan because they seem to care the most & want their team to succeed more than those who will take it or leave it.

Interesting, Sherwood says he doesn't need any players in the Jan Window, really, I'll bet that put a smile on Levy's face, no wonder "He is very well thought of at Spurs", I'll bet he is. Does Sherwood not consider it a problem that for instance we have nominally 4 CBs for the two spots, except that 1 of them is virtually permanently injured, and 1 is a championship player playing in the PL, hence we are wide open through the middle even against poor sides. We have 1 LB worthy of the name and have to play a CB there as injury cover, we have 3 strikers, one of whom is rumoured to be off to Montreal, 1 who plays if he wants, how he wants, and tries about 4-5 games/season, and 1 who whether you play 4-4-2, 4-3-3, or any bloody system you want, can't score, should have had a hat-trick last week, couldn't finish. All this but "we don't need any players", not bloody much we don't.

Ghumumville is already declaring him to be a tactical buffon which i feel is more to do with him still pining for his man-crush: AVB. It is slightly comical how the avb loyalist advanced the theory that 1 1/2 years was not enough time to judge avb but 3 games id more than enough for Tim. I would like to see what the team is doing by the end of the season before i make sweeping declarations about the ability of Tim to manage at this level.
Conan_the_Spur
Apparently, according to Matt Le Tissier on Sky, WBA were on top for at least the first half. Why oh why, can't we see off poor sides at home, first West Ham (twice) and struggling against Hull (twice), now this. If we want to do any good we have to make WHL a fortress, some hope. We need to beat Pl teams never mind the League 1 teams in the Thursday Egg Cup.
Frank
coopsieyid you said..."Fecking LOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNGG ball, stop it, please. Dawson & Rose are the main culprits."
Walker showing his intelligence, AGAIN. Fecking yellow card which was 100% unnecessary & now we lose yet another defender.
Jesus Christ, Adebayor is about 6ft 3", of fecking lady!! Never have I seen such a bloody weak sissy assed 'man'. He should be dominating the majority of defenders, but he's just too much of a sissy.

Yeah great compliments.Nothing wrong with moaning, shows fans they care. But don`t moan at posters when you`re doing the same.

People in glass houses shouldn`t throw stones.

123 Spurs, please read a post before you comment. I know the history of the 60s,70s,80s,90s as well as you do. What I said was, this is the lowest we have been since Redknapp came in. So we have gone from the heady days of a CL QF, to where we are now, being unable to beat the likes of West Ham, and WBA at HOME.
Frank
Going to watch 2 teams who know how to play football & not the joke that is being a Spurs supporter.

levy is an idiot & he`d better get it right in the summer,Sherwood won`t last beyond that. This season is a write off,yes i`m moaning,& it`s because i`m embarrassed to be a Spurs fan,our club is a laughing stock & & so are we.

Deeply disappointed as I was expecting 3 pts today. If we cannot beat WBA at home, what should we expect from United and Arsenal away ??

I may be mistaken here, but i was under the impression that under EU law all contracts can be renegotiated when half completed. This means that football clubs routinely sign contracts for double what they need if they want to keep a player or manager long term. Therefore, i doubt that Levy sees Tim as a long term solution and that Tim knows he only has till the end of the season to show that he's good enough. i would wager that Levy has next seasons manager lined already.
Conan_the_Spur
One ought not forget how weakened a squad we have at the moment. No Kaboul, no Verts, no Paulinho, no Sandro, no Dembele, no Capoue... That's the heart of the defense right there. But Chiriches and Daws were pants, and that's not the fault of missing so many players. Well, Chiriches was pants. Daws showed occasional courage, but he's three quarters of a step behind, isn't he? Soldado and Ade were disappointing. No confidence that bringing in Defoe would help. Deep mournful sigh. But to make any evaluation of Timmy at this point isn't warranted. Stoke looks ready to be taken, but the proof of the pudding will be in whether we take them.

I dread what our squad will look like at the end of the Jan Window, when a few of our star players, many of whom are coveted by others, realise that to preserve their reputations, world cup spots, or just their self respect, want away, now that a boot boy has been appointed coach for 18 months, who could blame them. This will suit Sherwood and Levy down to the ground, they can then promote all Sherwood's "wonder kids", and next season, we can enjoy an entertaining scrap with the other candidates to keep out of the bottom four and hopefully preserve our PL status.
Frank
Frank don't worry, Levy will hold anyone hostage but to be honest we might as well sell one or two. I would rather see caulker on the pitch instead of chiriches. too bad we sold him.

logos8, the problem is it been easy to see we are not great at home and easier to set up away from home wince before the start of last season, nothing has been done about it, in fact I guess its got worse, really poor management
tophobunty1882
@Topho spot on. @logos, I'd be quite happy to see one or two go from CM. Far too many players there. Actually I'd be quite happy if we entertain offers for Siggi, Holtby, Capoue, even Chadli. We may as well try to make the Livermore loan permanent as well. We could then use the money to bolster LB and CD.

I must say this pub league football run by headless chicken that Sherwood brought to the club is worse than AVB's type. And that alone says a lot! There is absolutely no confidence in any of our results anymore. We just hope we score more than opposition. Except we are not exactly Brazil!

ghulamville he was always an accident waiting to happen at his former club or playing for country. I have seen him giving away the ball time and time again, and it's not funny. He is a mistery to me because he is very talented but makes the most stupidest mistakes in the most simple moments and creates out of nothing scoring opportunities for the opposition. 4mil maybe worth it, 9 mil never, especially as he never looked like top4 quality imo.

Being a supporter of THFC carries a heavy burden. Not only does one have to listen to Gooners and Chelsea plastics, but also to other Spurs supporters. LOL. Lighten up, lads. Give the new manager a wee bit of time to settle in and for the lads to get used to him.

HT at the City ground 1-0 to Forest, BAE playing his standing on one leg football, Kranjcar using his pace in midfield, Ravel ''Jenas'' Morrison playing sideways and giving the ball away with ease, Carroll tries to play football, but get's knocked off the ball, all going to plan for Arry. Considering WBA played with 3 Centre Halfs, pushing the wing backs onto our wide men, out numbered us in midfield 3 over 2, it was another typical away side performance, it was another point nearer to safety.

Ferdinand striker coach? that`s not even funny.

Spurs are a shambles,Levy who i`ve always backed, has to either step aside or sort this shambles out.Spurs have become the laughing stock of the EPL,& Spurs deserve to be.
NO EPL side should be run like this, more about earning money off the pitch & exploiting fans than it is actually getting results. All those sponsors chucking in their millions must be well impressed with the mess that is THFC.
Spurs greed is starting to bite them in the arse, make money money, make money, more money, but they took their eye off the ball at the part that matters the most, what happens on the pitch.
The booing at Spurs is becoming a worrying trend, not the fans fault,it`s the board for putting business first & fans last. That ethos is now catching up with them.Only so long you can run a business with unhappy punters.
But no right minded Spurs fan with any care for the club should be happy,or make excuses for this.

What other club could spend £107 MILLION and make us worse, it can only be TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR
whitehartmart
I've got to say this is the most pessimistic i've been about us for years, we have no philosophy, structure or organisation to aim for or a set way of playing. We are a massive mess, it's going to take the rest of this season and most probably the majority of next season to get this right. Tim Sherwood may well become a good manager one day but not here, not now, im sure we'll appoint someone in the summer. Sherwood is Holloway esque is some of his interviews with attempted humour and funny one liners, not for me. Their are positives, Walker look's back to his best, i like the look of Rose and Eriksen is starting to tick. We need to have a set 11 and make minor changes every now and then and scrap the europa for this season. Please play Lamela how will he ever settle if he dont play, give him a solid 6 weeks and see where we are with him then, i see him as a number 10, could be outstanding there. And this argument about moaning and being negative is silly, everyone has a write to a opinion and i see a hell of a lot to moan about right now, we moan because we care and want the best for our club, we have been treated poorly by levy and co and they've got us in a massive mess, it's down to them to fix it now but until then we'll carry on having days like today. No fan is better or worse, to suggest you're a better fan because you dont moan is ridiculous, it's a shambles at the minute but i think we're rock bottom now and it will get better. Start with getting rid of Siggy, Chadli, Chriches and Dawson. We have a lot of injuries and people seem to forget that we have half a team missing. It will get better.
WizYid
To Fanny Adams, I suggested that Timmy have a bit of time for the players to get used to him, and you tell me that he should be used to them by now. You've inverted my meaning, lad. By my count, in the first half they had 6 great scoring chances. We had a free kick. Porous defence and no attention to positioning at all. It really is run around a bit football v 2.0. Awful stuff. There is no way this works to our favour. AS expected though, fans seem much happier to lose 4-3 or draw 1-1 than win a boring 1-0. Exciting stuff. I find myself who is going to make the next outrageously stupid play. Fun for the whole family. And, always exciting because the next one is just around the corner. Honestly, but for their lack of clinical ability and Lloris we would have been buried today. Anyone who doesn't see that, wasn't watching. Terrible Sunday rec league football. There is no plan. COYS

Hi all just back from WHL. mmmm flew in from Dubai to watch this. I must say I have not been to the lane for 2 years now and I was shocked that the level of us Spurs fans noise, it is the quietest i have ever heard us, you could feel the tension. Now to the game, our 2 best players on the pitch were Rose and Walker by a long distance. Our first touch was shocking, Holtby and Siggy were like headless chickens. Our final ball was just poor, from both wings. I know we have many injuries at the moment with some big players out but as everyone is saying home against WBA should be a banker. We had 60% possession but know end ball again. I thought Ade had taken over from Defoe as he was offside about 8 times. If I am honest and I had to sum up the game, the players look scared and do not know what to do with the ball, they all look apprehensive and scared of making any mistakes, for me there does not seem to be any leaders. overall very dissapointed but hope to have Pauli and Dembele and Sandro back for Sunday. I was very surprised no Capoue not in the starting Eleven. Merry Christmas all

told you the avb lovers will start posting again after hiding from that 3-2 win at s'otton. peterballb the football today was awful, I agree but if you claim that watching avb's football was better, then you probably weren't watching the matches under him, just the numbers. when avb had poor results you always defended him by naming all the injuries that prevented him for delivering. Surely you did not forget that long list of injuries for today's match have you? were you expecting siggy to deliver? or chadli on the right to deliver? or holtby who hasn't started most of the epl matches this season? yes we looked better defensively under avb, but clean sheets won't win you games. get over him, he is over-rated, even though few people rate him anyway. chelsea played the same boring football under him, bad appointment from day 1 just like sherwood perhaps. no plan you say? I agree. but right now this is all we have and we have to back tim and hope that he delivers and in the sumer hopefully we'll get it sorted out with someone else. the plan was for avb to get us forward but the board got scared after some poor results. Did he deserve to stay until the summer? yes. Am I glad he is gone? Yes but that doesn't mean it was the wise decision. Sherwood doesn't look like the right decision either but the jury should still be out. He went all in at S'otton hoping for a win just to nail the job. Levy took the bait and now we're in limbo for the rest of the season. I still think though that Sherwood can deliver and win 12 matches out of 22. that would be more than avb's 53% if you are such a big fan of numbers and stats. As I said though, harry's 49% win rate doesn't look worse than avb's 53%, considering the squad they inherited. The team already had a better winning mentality that harry built after two 4th places and the CL quarter finals, so I don't buy the "best win rate under avb stat". Sherwood on the other hand has to increase moral in a team that was hoping to challenge for the title and was sitting in 8th place when avb left. Second EPL match and you already know what Sherwood is all about? Good for you. I'll give him a chance before I give the verdict especially with Paulinho, Dembele, Sandro, Vertonghen, Townsend, Lennon, Kaboul injured. COYS
logos8
How selective stats? Against Liverpool, until the Paulinho folly, we were in the game. Shots were off target as ever, but we looked like we had a chance. I saw nothing today to suggest we had a chance. This was WBA. To give up six chances in a half against Liverpool or City is nothing. Happens almost every week. West Ham was a result completely against the run of play. Dawson pushed out of the way on the first. Fabulous save by Lloris and very fortuitous rebound for the second and the third was a result of us pressing. Did they have any other chances? WBA had 6 golden chances in the first half with absolutely no creation other than the fact we have so much room between our attackers and our defenders. Not selective at all. There is not a shred of a plan on the pitch. Bentaleb on and Capoue sitting!!!! Really? Can't see why players will now all want out. Dembele, Sandro, Lamela, Vertonghen, Lloris, Walker. Enjoy them all now. Next August might be too late if one wants to see them in a Spurs kit. COYS
peterballb
markboy, you describe the results of 18 months of taking all the creative freedome out of this team... culprit AVB. Levy's idea of changing that for the good is to emply someone with less experience when Glenn Hoddle sadi he wanted to step in....
tophobunty1882
peterballb are you kidding? we were in the game until the red card? it could have been 5-0 for liverpool at half time. what are you on about? are you avb's cousin or something?

Compared to where we were in 2010 we've *****ed it up, the chance for Tottenham has come and gone, back to finishing 7th looking at the fair play table.
MrSpurs
A team that was going to challenge for the title? I nearly choked on my Xmas pudding. I don't think even Levy could be that stupid. Then again....
ItalianYiddo
I am not talking about Levy, I am talking about what the players were saying in the interviews. AVB sold them the idea that they were going to come here, all these new signings and they were going to hit the ground running. Clearly the moral was awful after 4 defeats at home to west ham, newcastle, man city and liverpool. I bet Eriksen and others were already starting to wonder why they came here, even before avb got sacked.
logos8
Where did I say AVB's football had become more entertaining? I merely suggest that the results are what we need. Losing or drawing will not get us a single, solitary trophy for our cabinet. With AVB, I could see a trophy this season. Now, I cannot see anything but finishing out of Europe, regardless of what some consider as the "entertainment" value. Be entertained. Just please do not confuse that with success. They are not the same. When we lose our top players (and it is a certainty that some will go if we are not in Europe next year and looking like challenging), then the "entertainment level; will go down. No matter how hard WBA try to entertain, they just don't have the players. AVB, like it or not, was a draw. Players believed in what he is doing. I do not see any of that belief beyond Adebayor, who is just happy to play without having to earn it. Good for him. Sherwood is also upping his value without having to earn it. All good for them. But where will it leave "mighty Spurs"? That is my only worry. I will remain a supporter and fan regardless. The owners, players, scouts and managers have not been and will not be with this team as long as I have been, will be.

IMO, Harry, on paper, had the third best (perhaps a tie for second best) squad in the PL for three of his years at Spurs. AVB was never so lucky. Harry did not lose a single top player while he was manager. AVB lost 4 in three windows. COYS

ItalianYiddo I never said sherwood was a good appointment. Even Owen Coyle would have probably been better as peterballb suggested. No big name was going to come mid season so I won't be surprised if Tim get's replaced after the world cup.
logos8
I'm getting the uncomfortable feeling that some of our players have thrown in the towel. Some don't seem like they're up for the fight. They don't look hungry. They don't look like they care enough for the club, fans or shirt. They look like they feel they're entitled to play and don't have to work hard or earn their place. This had already started in AVB's last 6 months but it looks like the problem is more ingrained than I thought. It also hasn't been helped by the appointment of Sherwood who many of our 'big names' will know little or nothing about and who may think are worthy of a big name manager rather than one with 'L' plates. This is a massive problem and not one that will be easy to sort out. It explains why Sherwood is bringing in a few if the youngsters. They know him, respect him and are hungry for their chance. Is this a long-term solution? Probably not. But unless our players start working and behaving like the talented and experienced professionals they are supposed to be we don't have many other options. Something is rotten at the core of our club and until that is cured we will never maximise our potential.
SpuriousLife
I don't think avb was going to magicly turn things around anyway. The season was compromised and I don't think Sherwood will do worse than him. Continuing to keep soldado isolated upfront when we were having problems scoring was the sign of a stubborn manager that wasn't going to pull a rabbit out of the hat.
logos8
We have taken a huge gamble by going with Sherwood, nothing has changed with regards to home form, don't understand capoue not starting, bentelab should have started if he was the one chosen to come on in the last game rather then replace Holtby later. Sherwood must have been involved in the purchase of siggy as he has played all three games, he is not a winger so don't play him there, let lamela play from the start at home. Just watching the highlights, WBA has had much the better chances and it's still the first half.

spurious you have it and some are still looking at posters of AVB on their bedroom walls.....absolute nonesense
tophobunty1882
logos, regardless of AVB's worth to the Spurs cause, to sack him without a proven coach was reckless to say the least, pathetically stupid at worst. My issue isn't with Sherwood my issue is with Levy. As a fan you can say, as you have done many times, I'm glad he's gone, you can shout it from the rooftops for what i care but as Chairman of our club you have to do the right thing and gambling on an unqualified rookie is not the right thing.
ItalianYiddo
I find it ironic, but not surprising that AVB's detractors keep leaning on the injuries list. Yet injuries and new faces was all that AVB had to deal with this year. Since it could not be an excuse then , how in Hades is it acceptable now? The team that started against WBA should have destroyed them. The quality in players cannot even be debated. Our defence is a mess, unlike anything we have seen since AVB took over. High line is a problem. We were walked through like saloon doors again. We managed 3 shots on target against Southampton and three today. These are not top clubs. I don't need to defend AVB. His record will stand up to time. Cal;l it boring, call it whatever you wish. But for a few games this season, we were a solid defensive team. We are not any longer. WE were undefeated in the cups. We are no longer. If you feel that AVB was given the players he needed and wanted and that he had sufficient time, so be it. I disagree. If you feel that Sherwood is good enough, so be it. I'd suggest his lack of experience means he cannot be considered an option. If you feel there was a plan to any of the three matches we have watched, so be it. I don't see anything but a manager throwing players out there and say, go out and have fun. I do that with 6 and 7 year olds in hockey and baseball, but I also have expectations that the players execute what we did in practice. If we worked on being crap on defence, we are succeeding. Next game no Walker, who was our best player today. Still Dawson and Chiriches though. I can't even imagine what is going through the minds of Dembele and Capoue. WE are going to lose players that we need to succeed. If people do not see the danger of entrusting 300M plus in player talent to a manager with no top flight managerial experience, let alone success (the U-21's have been poor this season for those who don't follow), then who am I to point out that the light at the end of the tunnel is a train. Stand there. Be entertained. It'll all be over before you know it. Best talent in 3 or 4 decades in a Spurs squad and it is being thrown away. COYS

Perfidious Albion outplayed Spurs today, and that's extremely depressing. I know, we had 60% possession, but they had the better chances to score, and it's goals that count, not possession. I'd be completely depressed, but let's wait for the injured and suspended to come back before we give up on Timmy. Lennon, Townsend, Paulinho, Sandro, Kaboul, Verts, and who else were out? The center of defense and defensive midfield were out. That's a heavy burden to overcome. Some of the disaster rending on this thread is too much too soon. (Or, maybe not, but I'm not ready to join in just yet.) As to reinventing history to see anything other than disaster in the match against doggy poo... ? No, man, it was bad long before Paulinho lost his cool.

ItalianYiddo you don't know what happened in there between levy and avb so I don't think you are right to say it was stupid. AVB was not sacked. It was an agreement between avb and levy. Who knows what avb did or said to levy. Maybe there was no choice but to part ways.

MrSpurs, Modric, Bale, VDV, King, I think they helped a bit.

Levy always had the next appointment lined up when he sacked someone so if this is an exception, maybe he didn't want to sack him but had no choice. Think about it before you claim that you know all the details behind the scenes. It wasn't even a sack. AVB agreed to leave.

ItalianYiddo so did crouch and jenas, palacios, pav and some more deadwood. Harry overachieved at times with that squad. When he took the club who was expecting for 2 top 4 finishes and a champions league quarter final? Not many.

we dominated ac milan at san siro for the first 60 minutes and we didn't even had bale or modric on the pitch. We had crouch in there who barely looks like a professional football player. If that isn't overachieving I don't know what is.

It ain't Sherwood's fault. He's out his depth. Outwitted by a manager less west brom team. You have to look at Levy

the problem with avb started with baldini. Wenger would never had accepted 7 new players without warning from the begining that it would have a negative effect on the squad , the performances and the results. AVB took it and sad he was happy, but he did not look happy. That's when things probably started going south regarding avb and the relation with Levy and Baldini. It was not going to work and I am afraid avb didn't want to be at club as much as he did when he was hired. Otherwise why wouldn't he stand his ground and say he won't step down? He agreed to leave. He wasn't sacked. End of story. Let's move on.
logos8
Avb would've won at So'ton and got a point here as well. No difference. Other than it was like watching two half decent games of football, rather than the tripe we were having to endure. Other than we haven't had much training time to work on the new plan. Other than Looking forward to our next game for a change. A big change is responsibility. It's headed for the players. You telling me these highly-paid expensively-assembled players can't play? Without step-by-step instructions? Or a sat-nav? I bet they can. And then it will come. Once confidence returns and 'thinking for yourself' becomes the norm, we'll get better. I can see a light. Big up for Rose and Walker - played well today. Chiriches - that's how he plays, he's entertaining but will get caught out at times - and he will have the odd shocker, irrelevant to style. There's a high level of anxiety at home for the players at the moment which is what affects 'the rub of the green'. They've just got to keep battling away at it. Make the most of training time, get fitness levels up for the higher-tempo game. It'll come. At the moment, the atmosphere is tense at the Lane and the players haven't high confidence levels. All created pre-Sherwood. Our injury situation is a little worrying. Low fitness levels would equate to picking up injuries and recovery time so it's good that's being looked at. Overall, an improvement. We weren't even CREATING chances under AVB. How many we created in 3 matches, stat freaks? They will start going in. We were vulnerable after our opener, which is about concentration. That's sortable. Ade makes a massive difference. Fire not so angry today? That's the trouble with him. He also looks like he's put weight on. And needs a shave. :] Agree with Neville. He's much better than he shows. And pay attention, Tim. If a little dance on the touch-line gets them a man down, I'll be bringing my revolver.

logos, it was stupid. Levy was interfering in team matters and AVB wouldn't have it. As he didn't have anyone else in place and wasn't willing to give the job to Hoddle till the end of the season, he should have left it to the end of the season. If we finish poorly who was going to blame him for sacking AVB? As it stands he has tarnished the name of Our Club, and I speak as someone who's being paying for at least one season ticket for 15 years.
ItalianYiddo
Attack posters all you wish. Make whatever smarmy comments you can. It will always be all that you have. There is no basis, no foundation, no history in anything you suggest. Yell louder. Your point will then be correct.

New Jersey Devils, Detroit Red Wings and Colorado Avalanche were the three best teams in the NHL for about 12 years. Their success is not debatable. I doubt that any one of them was ever the most "entertaining" teams. What all three were (I am an Avalanche fan, for the record) was technically sound and supremely talented. So, although they didn't win games 8-2, they had the players who would score the necessary goals to win 3-2, because the win was the thing. 1-0 or 8-0. A loss or a win is still the same. There is no picture book that goes with a trophy or a title. You either won it, or you didn't. I have no confidence at all that this team is capable of winning anything this season. Even after the team walked off the pitch after the Liverpool game, I had belief. I do not any longer. Great free kick by Eriksen. That was about it. Technically, the rest of the game was awful. Full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. COYS

This is all about chaos theory. Seems like we gone from one to the other!
"Pascale (1999) said that if a system of management is too rigid and has too high a degree of stability, than nothing original or innovative can emerge from it. He also said that the opposite is true, as in when a system is completely chaotic, it is too formless to combine any teams together, and therefore is also unable to produce anything innovative or original."

As I said Spurs were better under Redknapp than we were under AVB. I'm sure there all kinds of reasons pro and anti Harry but the fact is we were better back then. We've gone backwards since.
MrSpurs
Mr.Spurs, if 49% is better than 55%, then yes, he was. Harry never lost his top players, AVB did Harry, IMO had, at worst, the third best squad in the PL. AVB never better than 4th, no matter how much lily-white I choose to put in front of my eyes. You can't compare the situations, like for like, because it doesn't fit. Harry had VDV, Modric, Bale, Adebayor motivated, King. When did AVB have such luxuries this season. Even last year he only had Bale. Ramos had his best players sold too. Harry didn't. Harry got us our highest league position ever while throwing away 21 points in games we dominated. AVB got us our highest points total ever in the PL with one star player. It's really hard to compare. Take VDV, Modric, Adebayor and King away from Harry. Where would he have finished? COYS
peterballb
jerkinmahjurgen, I am as tired as most of talking about AVB. I was trying to refrain from mentioning until people come up with we wouldn't have won at southampton with AVB. You can prove that? I thought our problem was not winning at home, we had our best away record with AVB. Our problem was winning at home, not quite sure Tim has sorted it out as yet, 1 loss and a draw, but let's give him time he might surprise as all.
ItalianYiddo
@Report Abuse, Perfidious Albion ? It in itself is the abuse and I am reporting it to you.
Arky
peterballb surely you know enough about football to know that there are enough football teams out there that have won trophies with attractive football. Because of that, your nhl analogy means next to nothing to me, but I might be wrong.
logos8
Peter, was that one of your posts claiming 'The Tottenham way' was losing 3-4 instead of drawing 1-1? Apologies if not but 'The Way' is not JUST about winning, it's about winning IN STYLE'. There is NO suggestion of a compromise.
jerkinmahjurgen
jerkinmahjurgen great post. The sat nav could be a good idea too for some players.
logos8
MrSpurs, if you sell your best players year in year out, it is hard to progress. Suarez was kept and pool are looking good. Had we kept Bale AND spend 40-50M we would have progressed. I am not saying Bale should have been kept as the money offered would have tempted most clubs but to bring in so many players we had to be realistic and looked beyond this season.
ItalianYiddo
Nice post Jacobslad. I think we've been looking for a manager capable of guiding us consistently into the middle ground between your two extremes for the last 30 years. AVB sure wasn't the right man. Sherwood may not be either. What is certain is that Levy has finally stitched our club up by trying to maintain his 'macho with managers' image. We will pay the price this season that looks almost certain. What we can also be sure of is if some players look like they'll be angling to move on the cheap either now or in the summer Sherwood will be sacrificed to bring in a name suitable enough to appease the over-inflated egos of some of our more valuable playing assets. Levy is definitely a problem. Maybe our managers aren't. Maybe it's the misplaced over-estimation of 'self' some of our players seem to be burdened with that we should be looking to either sort out or move on.
SpuriousLife
Peterball, i'm certainly no Redknapp lover but to say suggest where he would be without the players he had is like saying where would have Pep Guardiola been without xavi. iniesta and messi, all horses for courses and a bit of a irrelevant point as no one knows how Harry would of done with different players.

Watching Liverpool today only confirmed how much they have overtaken us, yes we are only 5 points behind them but their play is way superior at the moment.
spurfect one
jerkinmahjurgin, the fly in the ointment is that if the players have all checked out before the confidence sets in, you can forget it. It is back to jail, do not pass go, do not collect $200. The players did not have anything bad to say about AVB. Our players talk a lot. Far too much for my liking. Nothing but unacceptable photos from BAE and AVB. BAE who again looked Championship level today. Says it all really. I wonder what Capoue is thinking? How about Holtby? I know Dembele looked *****ed against Southampton. There is so much potential for irreconcilable damage to this squad, that I do not take this all in stride. There are moments where situations are on a knife's edge. That's where we are. Wholly unnecessary IMO. It's where we are. The season and the current Spurs squad rests on what happens. COYS
peterballb
Peter - Spurs were better in 2010 under Harry than we were ever under AVB reign. (I expect I pro AVB, anti Harry response that involves stats)
MrSpurs
ItalianYiddo I agree but then why didn't AVB lower expectations if he was expecting gel problems? It was his fault for claiming he was happy and that he can deliver. after 16 games the table does not lie and it was just not good enough, not to mention our scoring record. Even he addmitted that it was not good enough: the points, the performances were not good enough. He addmited that. And he agreed to leave. Will it ruin our season? I don't know, I hope not. I don't think it will get worse than what avb delivered this season. Sherwood already prooved he can make them score so let's see what he delivers, I really think he can win 11 games from 22.
logos8
Italian, I said AVB WOULD have won at So'ton, and he drew 1-1 with Brom in his game here. So no difference, points wise. Tim should've put my team out there - we'd've won... Lamela over Chadli anyday. Especially if we've no other winger, although Siggy played ok. Not too worried about Walker suspension as we're very strong there. Would like to see Fredericks again although Naughton deserves a chance in his rightful position as well. Is Sandro injured?
jerkinmahjurgen
spurfect one, my point was exactly that. You can't compare them apples to apples because of the factors I outlined. Liverpool are not in Europe and are running with 15 players. It is a far easier thing to do then when you have four competitions. That's a fact. Look how teams that qualify for Europe because of one good season fare the year they are in Europe. Generally a huge drop off in the league. It is a lot to ask. Liverpool are playing ok, but to suggest that their defence is good is not accurate. They have the best player in the PL. That makes up for a lot. COYS
peterballb
spurfect, we know what Redknapp would have done with different players, Portsmouth springs to mind, spent a few bob there to.
ItalianYiddo
peterballb you are right but your hero AVB brought us on the knife's edge. after 16 games he admitted that the results and the performances were not good enough. he was already out of his depth. he agred to go. it doesn't help to be solid defensively if you can't score. clean sheets won't win you games, and defensive football was the opposite of what spurs have always been
logos8
jerkinmahjurgen, yes, I did post that. All evidence over the past 4 decades would suggest I am correct. It's all well and good to revel in the past glories, but the fact is, winning with style (something to which every sports team should aspire) matters not at all if you are not "winning". I would suggest that until we are "winning" the "style" really is secondary. With AVB, I could see us winning something. I cannot see anything glorious coming out of the balance of this season. COYS
peterballb
Not so, he left because he would not accept that the board should tell him how to manage. That's fact. COYS
peterballb
Arky, if you think my comment about Albion was a perfidious abuse, then: Attaquons dans ses eaux la perfide Albion! This phrase comes to mind everytime I hear of West Bromich. Better to play them in their own park, mate. They come here looking the worst club in England and make us look like we cannot defend. Perfidious indeed.
logos, you are kidding yourself if you believe that AVB would have walked if he had being backed him on team affairs, he was interfering, and he wouldn't have it. He didn't resign, it was "by mutual agreement". And again without wishing to go back into it, how was it a failure at this stage of the season? In all competitions, within reach of top 4 with Man U behind us and with a team of strangers?
ItalianYiddo
A key difference for me is Sherwoods' acceptance that a 1-1 home draw is not good enough. As he says, he knows the league, the club, the expectations. I'd wager he knows what these players need to do to get there.
jerkinmahjurgen
And will stop at nothing to get them there. He's professional, knowledgeable and quite light-hearted.
jerkinmahjurgen
ItalianYiddo within reach of top 4 is not good enough. the performances were not good enough. he admited that. his own words "not good enough". no excuses. That's why chelsea sacked him: "not good enough". Don't know why we hired him. Nice power point presentation I hear. Also what I don't understand is why avb lovers claim that "in all competitions" in december is an achievement. Until sherwood brought adebayor we haven't had a striker score a goal since 27 october. it was "not good enough" and avb knew it and admited it. only you lot won't admit it
logos8
Peter, I don't suppose you would know, during the Southampton-Spurs game Gary Neville commented on the Spurs situation on the aftermath of AVB's "sacking". He said he found it hard to understand that AVB wasn't given more time taking into account the amount of new players that came in. He also questioned the wisdom of people demanding that our football wasn't entertaining enough. He said get the team to know each other first, style will come in time. But hey, what does he know about football?
ItalianYiddo
When did AVB say he wasn't good enough logos?
ItalianYiddo
peterballb, you point to the New Jersey Devils and Colorado Avalanch as boring NHL teams that won the Stanley Cup. OK. But what about all those teams of Les Habitants with the Rocket, Maurice Richard, who won six cups in the 1950s with the most beautiful flowing attacking hockey one could imagine. The 1961 Spurs of hockey, no? Or the Bruins of the 1970s with Bobby Orr et al., who was the most stylish player of them all. What Avalanche player or Devils player will be remembered like either Orr of Richard? You make it sound like hockey teams win when they play boring hockey, but only boring teams win without style. Stylish teams win with style, and they are the ones who give pleasure, true pride, and are remembered with love. And you root for the Colorado Avalanche?

As to winning ugly, let me quote Toronto Argonauts fan Rob Paul, "I’m going to do everything in my power, everything in my power to beat you guys.” Sometimes it's better not to win than to win ugly.

Peter - AVB 'left' (i.e. He was sacked) because of some appalling results. AVB had all the gear but no idea.

ItalianYiddo after Liverpool. I think it was the post-match interview.
logos8
within reach of top 4 isn't good enough says logos. Not sure what qualifies for you to decide what is good enough, Wenger couldn't understand the decision, Neville said it was a Rubbish decision to sack him, Allardyce said it would have taken a miracle worker to get so many players integrated in that time, but hey what do they know?
ItalianYiddo
Another quote from Rob Ford, "I haven't smoke crack in over a year." You can't make things like this up. (Sorry I typed in Rob Paul earlier. My bad. I should proof read before hitting send.) Ford has such an easy mnemonic, too: Found on the road dead, which is so fitting for this sassy Argonauts fan.

"This is a top-four squad but in our Premier League form we are not there. It's not the points tally that's the problem, it's the expression of the results. "It's the second expressive scoreline that we've suffered in the season. "We admit that in the Premier League things aren't going in any shape or form the way we want. " that's what I am talking about. basicly saying not good enough.
logos8
When my parents kidnapped me from London when I was 14, we moved to North America, where I switch playing football (they call is soccer there!) and started playing hockey. I know that playing hockey isn't worth it unless it's played with style. In that, it's like football (yes, like soccer, as they say in Toronto). Both sports are best when played with panache, not with boring managers. One can both (a) win, and (b) play with style and panache. The combination of the two is the point of the activity. Winning like the New Jersey Devils did is not the point of the sport at all.
ItalianYiddo exactly wenger wouldn't have accepted 7 new faces in and still have top4 as target
logos8
logos, of course he said the performance wasn't good enough, what did you expect him to say? He didn't say he wasn't good enough, we bounced back from the City hammering with two wins we would have bounced back again he never lost the players. As I keep saying wait till the end of the season unless you have someone that is better in place.
ItalianYiddo
We want to win with style, not by putting the other team to sleep.
italianyiddo regarding the bouncing back here is what avb had to say: ""And because of the expressive result it makes it even more difficult for us to bounce back."
logos8
logos, you don't live in the real world, top 4 was a big ask for anyone outside Manchester and Chelsea.
ItalianYiddo
italianyiddo you say we would have bounced back... even avb said in his own words that it was very difficult to bounce back after such a result... get over it. he is not the winning manager you dreamed of
logos8
ItalianYiddo I agree, top 4 was a big ask. Then you won't be disappointed with sherwood either because his results won't be worse than avb's.
logos8
italianyiddo I did not say that we should have been in top 4 for him not to be sacked. I think he deserved to be sacked because of the boring constipated football that we played under him just like chelsea did. He deserved to be sacked for keeping soldado isolated and ade exiled when we clearly had problems in front of goal.
logos8
logos we will never know, for a useless manager his record was pretty good, had he been allowed to finish the season we would have known for sure, he never lost the players, most important factor, so not to allow him to finish the season and replace him with a rookie was a stupid and reckless gamble let's hope it pays off, I just don't happen to be a gambler if I was I may see it different.
ItalianYiddo
ItalianYiddo it was a gamble from day 1. There were no signs at Chelsea that he was good enough to manage a top5 EPL club. Keeping him would have been a gamble too. There weren't decent signs of improvement. The fact that the players liked him was not enough.
logos8
If Sherwood gets 5th or 6th he will have done a great job. I refer you back to Neville comments about the boring constipated football, as a paying customer I would be the first to complain if I thought the football wasn't going to improve, maybe I am more patient than most and maybe I am one of the few that appreciates a 1-0 win more than 3-2 loss.
ItalianYiddo
logos, do you think Sherwood is an upgrade on AVB?
ItalianYiddo
If I could choose now between Sherwood and AVB I would pick Tim. He captained blackburn to the EPL title in 95. He understands the league better than AVB and as a former player at top professional level he can relate to the players better than avb. He does seem like a cowboy and an inexperienced kamikaze guy but I honestly don't think he will do worse than avb. 11 wins from 22 is 54% win rate for this season and I think Tim can manage that. Next win should be against Stoke. COYS
logos8
Playing with style doesn't necessarily mean scoring a lot of goals. And it surely doesn't mean losing 3-2. But it also doesn't mean a lot of sideways and backwards passes and off-sides traps either. It's OK to win 1-0, if it's done with style, but not when it's done like a George Graham team.
The script is already written, so I am just sitting back and watching it unfold. Today's game was as I expected with the line up. Firstly we have a lot of injuries so we cannot judge too much. Our CB pairing is weak, Dawson has got worse and that is because he has a rookie next to him who imo is NOT a CB more like a frustrated CM. I don't know of a CB that doesn't and can't head a ball, who plays so far up the field and gets caught out and who stands around in the area at set pieces. Vlad is going backwards, or should I say he is being exposed. Dawson needs wither kaboul or Vertonghen next to him.

I still cannot understand why Capoue is not playing CM. I give Sherwood benefit of the doubt that he didn't want to risk him in midfield in case he was needed in CD, but I am not sure if I am being too kind to Sherwood. Capoue should have played imo, what's happening there?.

The strike force is what I EXPECTED. Sorry but I was never going to get carried away with Ade's first two performances, he does that all the time when he has something to prove, then his effort dips and it did today, his work rate was nothing like the last two games and as for Soldado, he NEVER looks like scoring, same problems we had under AVB and same problems we had last season with our strike force. I NO LONGER like any of our strikers. Out of the three I prefer Defoe but he has lost it now days, they are just not good enough or consistent enough, fed up with them.

Eriksen has good techinique but we saw hs weakness, he needs to beef up but early days for him. Chadli, woeful, why didn't Sherwood replace him sooner? We missed Lennon so does Walker, we still haven't sorted the LW although and Lloris is nowhere near assured as he used to be. Overall ths was exactly what I expected and while the performances were more exciting to watch as it was more open it is all a bit naive and predictable. Will it change under Sherwood, i doubt, i do think he will be out of his depth long term, but he hasn't had the full squad of players available yet so we will see.

I think today showed we are kind of lost imo. Still we were 12 points ahead of Arsenal one season and they clawed it back so who knows we could still claw points back and make a challenge for top four but I doubt it. Didn't hear much of Sherwoods post match interview, just couple of words but didn't seem to know what to say, wasn't his cocky confident self. If our season falls apart we are going to be the laughing stock again. Lets hope we get players back and we get three points next match.
WorldPeace
saying that though, I don't think it was the right decision to appoint Sherwood considering there could have been other options on the table for an interim until summer. It is a huge gamble.
logos8
The fact or not that AVB was a gamble is not here or there now, we are talking about replacing him with a rookie mid season that is a gamble that can end up in tears. Enough said on the matter I am quite sick of it. Let's hope that Tim is the next Fergie. COYS.

Sod winning in style, the Spurs way etc, much rather a dour 1-0 win than an exciting 4-3 defeat. I don’t want to see any excitement for the neutral in our own penalty area, I don’t want to see any shots on goal by the opposition, I actually liked AVB’s method of controlling the game OK lacking in creativity but that would have come. Redknapp had 3 + world class players in his squad, this year AVB had none. And where’s Baldini, he is keeping quiet, what was his role in the current fiasco

Report Abuse, ridiculoius. What you clearly don't understand is that sport is changed. It's no longer good to practice a couple of times a week, be drunk after every game and largely out of shape but still win because you are better. That no longer flies. All teams work hard and talent is limited by design. It's called systems and the only way to beat systems is to works as hard (if not harder) and have that extra level of quality that allows you the moment of brilliance. Don't compare hockey in the 60's and 70's top hockey now. You can't even compare the 80's and Wayne Gretzky to now. It's not the same. There is no going back. Work harder, execute better and have more skill or you will not win. Same goes for football. COYS

I am not a defender of AVB. I am a defender of the "project". Decisions have been made in this project. You don't sell Bale and bring in 100M of talent to replace him without a plan. That plan has been all left to someone with no elite level experience as a manager. That is a joke, but for the fact it is really happening. My beef was never Harry, per se. It was bringing in a manager that hadn't a clue how to use a full squad. That compromised our chances of winning. Contrary to what many on here espouse, top four is not winning anything unless you were 1st. There is only one winner in that. All the rest lost. Are we building a winning team or is the best we can hope is to be as good as that other north London team that we mock for not being able to win anything? I am a proponent of the project. I fully support this young squad filled with talent and I am fully willing to give the project time. Sherwood is not qualified remotely to carry this forth. Not because I say so. His CV says so. Or rather doesn't say so. If Bentaleb, Feredericks et al are going to be deployed ahead of squad members, we are in big trouble. This is about the plan going down the toilet. Not about AVB. I am on record as saying that I care not about stability in manager. It's about the right manager for the players. Inter, AC Milan, RM change managers like underwear. They still win. The consistency is in the players and the plan. The plan evolves, managers don't get heard by the players anymore. All fine. Bring in a new manager that suits the players. What we have done is the exact opposite. We now have a manager and the players are going to be expected to fit. Problem is, when that does not occur, the players will walk en masse for the door. Project done. That's the unnecessary risk. May I be proven wrong (as the consequences, if I am correct, will be dire). The odds are not in our favour. COYS
peterballb
Peter here's a statistic for you. 29th August 2009 to 27th Dec 2009 15 games under Redknapp and 22 points, pro rata for the season would have been 56 points that would get you maybe 7th if your lucky. What was the factor influencing this low points ratio, Modric was out with a broken leg. He still had King and Bale.Modric was sold when AVB arrived and 72 points that season, ludicrous sacking.
matt hoten
So we do have some idea what Redknapp would have done without Modric let alone King and Bale

I don't know what the Mayor of Toronto has anything to do with this discussion. He is Harry Redknapp. A soundbite. He was elected on soundbites. His "reforms" have done nothing to better the life of Torontonians. He has made them the laughing stock and yes, he did crack, is constantly intoxicated, grabs women's bums at functions, has staff bribe people for get a video that doesn't exist showing him taking crack cocaine that he never did hanging out with people he didn't know, one of whom was murdered in a gang affiliated hit. Other than that, it's all good. If you like soundbites. He is a buffoon. Only difference between Ford and Chris Farley (with whom he bears a certain resemblance) was that Chris Farley recognized what he was and was good at what he did. The other is delusional and an embarrassment. COYS

Its been such a topsy turvy season at Spurs and elsewhere. I think AVB going was wrong. He should have stayed at least until the Arse game. I have no problems with TS taking over because there was no one else. Hodd was not an option given the bad blood between him and TS from way back. That would have created more chaos and troubled waters at the club. On the basis that i think AVB should have been given more time, I certainly am not going to be running down TS. It is a quite incredible ask of him in terms of timing, injuries and now the new players having to re-connect and re-tune to a new manager. God knows what they must think of their decisions to join us. Spurs is like a man dying a slow death in the desert, the vultures will be circling for our superstars, is there an oasis in sight? Well, this season, with all the signings, was going to be a transitional phase in our project. Alas the project ended abruptly and we embark on another INTERIM project?...another transitional phase? Almost sick of what’s happening at our club. The common denominator over the past decade has been one Mr Levy. Too much control, too much interference, without any knowledge of the game. Only losers out of this shambles are the fans, who have virtually no say in the matter.

After today’s game, I am with WordPeace as per his last post. Echoes my sentiments exactly.

Today, I didn’t see a plan A, more a case of try the same as we did against Southampton and see how it goes!. Southampton are in a similar position (table wise) as us and both teams attacked to try and win. WBA are threatened with relegation and with a solid backline of FIVE with THREE Centre backs, it would’ve been difficult even if we had three strikers on the pitch. We had no plan B or C. The substitutions made absolutely no difference to the pattern of play.

Peeps say we have so many injuries. Well Pauli returns, but Walker out. My fear is that once these players begin to return, Tim will start tinkering with team and we will go through the same chapter as with AVB, unsure of our starting eleven. By the time the season will almost have ended.

Pity really, we ALL had high hopes and excitement for this season. The euphoria of all those signings and the anticipated AVB’s hand selected squad to make a serious challenge for (or at least consolidate) the top-4 status. Instead, I can see (performance/achievement wise) this to have been a non-event season. As they say, with money, it is easy come, easy go!. Couldn’t say NO to the ludicrous offer for Bale, AND couldn’t help but splash the lot to BUY a NEW team!. I believe the debacle of this season has set THFC back so far that it may take quite a while to dream of CL days again. There were so many things going in our favour to make the cut for top4, with the USUAL top4 teams struggling. We could really have applied the pressure. Instead, the likes of Liverpool, Everton (and sadly) Newcastle look more likely to take advantage!

Can you imagine West Ham in Championship and having the Olympic Stadium. Funny that we may be nearing our own new 60K stadium, but hope we won’t be a mid-table team still dreaming of that Elite status.
Critical_Spur
Not sure what the talk about Harry and AVB is all about. It's Tim now. Surely we can only comment on a match by match basis. Against WBA we were crap, but didn't loose. WBA should have been 3 up before we scored. Walker, Rose and Eriksen were good. Lloris made a couple of very good saves that kept us in it. They defended well. Considering the amount of times we gave them back the ball we still had most of the possession. It, as usual, counted for nothing. Most of the team looked tired and out of it. Why? (This seems to be the case in every other game). Ade tried a bit and then rested in-between trying a little bit more and then had some more rest. Holtby looked nervous, tired and week. Chadli looked bored. Dawson was good in the air and rubbish on the ground. Vlad overplayed it and took too many risks. But, in the second half, he did the opposite. (Even when he had time, he hacked it). Though he's still getting slagged off, Siggy was the best of our attacking players. Sodado wasn't great but he wasn't bad. Can't say I agree with you peter. Style is style. One can win with boring hockey or with style. That was true 40 years ago and it's still true. I watched the Stanley Cup finals the last two years ago and in both the two teams played interesting hockey, not that Devils rot of 10 years ago. Up and down the ice. Triple overtime games between Bruins and Chicago with both teams skating all out. I think your analysis of changes in sports over the years is not right. Sorry mate, but you've got this one wrong. Same in football. Brazil won the Confederations Cup this year playing interesting football, and even the Italy-Japan match was wide open and spectacular. Your view is far too depressing and wrong, I think.

Peter, you don't see what the mayor of Toronto has to do with this discussion, but then you write a long paragraph about him. LOL. I mentioned him just for fun. This site is supposed to allow fun, isn't it, and Rob Ford sure provides lots of it. And, he's an avowed great supporter of the Argonauts and the CFL. I wonder what he thinks about boring hockey vs. fun hockey. I'd bet he likes fun hockey, even if it doesn't fit your argument about what it takes these days to win the Stanley Cup (and the last to final series in the Stanley Cup did not present hockey like that of the Avalanche or Devils when they won; it was exciting hockey). Hockey, but the way, bears similarities to football, with goals in a net, offsides rules, etc. Both great sports, by the way, and both meant to be played in style, not to win to bore the opponent to death.

Italy/Japan. Great example of two teams that play their system and hope to use their clutch players to get the job done at the other end. And I presume that your NHL comments were to suggest that the best defensive teams made the finals and that the semi-finals were 3 of the four best defensive teams. Yeah, the offence helps but no team is successful without settling the back end first. We are becoming a complete disaster at the back. COYS
peterballb
There are two separate points being discussed here. One is whether boring teams like Devils are the ones winning Stanley Cups, and the other is whether good teams need to play defense. The old Montreal teams in the 50s knew how to play defense, as did the Bruins of the Orr era. But neither of them played boring hockey. And the last to Stanley Cup finals included defensively solid teams, and neither had boring teams. Bruins and Black Hawks both played exciting hockey, not like those deadly Devils teams. Spurs need to tighten up their defense which has been horrible recently, but they don't need to play the boring type of football they were under AVB. They need to be defensively solid and play with style and panache. We have been a disaster at the back, but that's a separate question from whether we should play with style. You argued that sports have changed in some fundamental way from 50 years ago. The only changes I've seen are (a) there's a lot more money involved, and (b) there is more emphasis on training. But the great teams of yore that won played solid defense and with style. But the teams in hockey you mention played with no style at all in comparison. Don't want that at WHL. Leave it out.

As to the match in Arena Pernambuco between Italy and Japan, it was exciting (a great surprise with an Italian team involved), open, fast paced, and the crowd of Brazilians were on their feet cheering, especially for the Japanese. One does not have to sacrifice style to place well. Absurd to think so.

One can make similar points about basketball and baseball. Solid pitching and defense win World Series, but an exiting offense is needed to keep the game entertaining. Look at the Red Sox winning this year. Exciting. And good defense to boot.

I don't want my Spurs to play like Stoke. I want them to play like Spurs, but of course we need to sort out the central defense. No reason not to demand both.

Peter, you wrote that times have changed since Montreal won 6 Cups in the 1950s, but those teams not only had Maurice Richard, Henri Richard, Bernie Geoffrion, Jean Beliveau, but also Doug Harvey in defense and Jacque Plante in goal. They were a solid defensive team and wonderfully attacking. Not only did they score goals, but they did so in a flow, fast way, and passed the puck marvelously. There is no need to play Devils boring hockey today. Chicago doesn't (the won this year) and Boston doesn't (they won last year and were in the final this year. Both play defense and both attack relentlessly. Come on you Spurs, play flowing attacking football and keep the ball out of the net on the other end. Can have cake and eat it too. In this, nothing has changed in 60 years. I'm not sure why you think it has.

You cannot succeed with the latter without drilling and executing the former. That means all players on the team committing to a defensive system that provides them with the knowledge that even if they go down a goal they will still pull it out. AVB was doing that. The clean sheets since Lloris became our keeper were not a fluke. It was a system that the players believed in. We seemed to believe, despite the lack of excitement, that we would get that goal in the end and the three points. We have been handcuffed by new players and injuries all season and it continues. Sherwood has nowhere near the experience to draw on that any other PL manager does. WE have entrusted the 300M and the project to a manager with no experience. I do not have any confidence that this will work. It is what we are now riding. May I be wrong. This is a right proper mess and it is self-inflicted. COYS

Comparing a 6 team league where all of the French Canadian players would only play for one team is a bit much. Yes, the Canadians had the best team of the era. They were also the best defensive team. So were the Islanders, Avalanche (who were only boring over the past 7 or 8 years when they were terrible), Devils, Red Wings. You don't make it to the Stanley Cup Finals, the Super Bowl, World Series, CL finals, or win the EPL without great defence. Yes, it is the flair team that normally wins, but managers like Mourinho, Capello and others don't exactly play great flair football. We have no plan. Therein lies the problem. COYS

Lets hope we get some players back by NYD I feel we are another 4-5 goal thrashing waiting to happen again. The midfield was so poor yesterday, causing a very slow central defence to be playing most of the game making last ditch tackles to save the very fortunate point we got. The home form is not showing any improvement what so ever. Every team seems very comfortable to be able to defend against us and then create very decent chances. WBA if were not so wasteful were well worth 3 points yesterday. COY

Report Abuse, we know you are not a young man so one would think that you would appreciate that winning football, and by winning football I mean titles, can only happen by building from the back. If you are happy with winning 4-3 and losing 5-1 another the next match that's fine, lots of spills and thrills, might even win the odd cup every ten years or so but is that enough or is it a waste when with the right leadership you can achieve more?

Pretty much dominated the 2nd half. Eriksen showing he can become a Very good central midielder. Majority of his corners are a real threat. Rose is becoming a sound left back. The way i see it is we have gone from having a winning plan (a plan where we were winning more games than we ever have done) that everyone bought into and we just spent 100 million on players to fit the plan. To a complete train-wreck with no plan. Joy of joys "run about a bit" football is back! Get ready for the summer exodus of names that joined to be part of the "project" but are now probably scratching their heads thinking "what the hell happenned im playing sunday league football". All we can do is hope and pray. The only saving grace is sherwood might prove to be so far out of his depth we sack him in the summer when the world cup managers + others become available. In the meantime im just going to batten down the hatches and wait til then.

klinsmann ... IMO Walker and Lennon both play better when they are together and give us, at least, one strong attacking option.

why is it doom and gloom??? No player will force Levy's hand in order for them to leave. (Not many clubs would want them anyway). We lost the manager and the season is compromised but in the summer we get back on track with a new manager (van gaal or any other big name) and a squad that doesn't need gelling anymore, most would have adjusted to the EPL by then. We'll hit the ground running finish top4 and win a trophy while we're at it. Simple. COYS

To Italian Yiddo, One needs to keep the ball out of one's own net, no doubt about it, but that needn't be done at the expense of being boring. As to AVB's project, I kept hoping that he was trying to build a solid defense first and then would add some attack style once the defense had been established. Never saw that happen and we'll never know whether that was part of his plans to accomplish (although I came to have doubts, serious doubts, that he'd ever get around to that). But I think my point is correct: One can have a good defense and play with style. Now, the Spurs of the Hoddle era, for example, had the style but not the defense, thus the 4-3 losses piling on. That's Tom foolery. Will we fall into an era of Tim foolery now? Let's hope not. But I'm in agreement with Danny Blanchflower, and that's what brought me to the Spurs in the first place, that one wants to play with grace and style first and foremost, and not win by boring the opponent to death. I'm not advocating, never have, ignoring the need to seek a clean sheet. One must keep the opponent off the score sheet as much as possible to gain points, but one also needs to play with style if one is to enjoy the game and if the punters are to enjoy the game. That's the Spurs way since at least the 1950s and we should not become the New Jersey Devils of English football. Heaven forbid we win by boring the opponent to death, and that was the path we were on for a while here. COYS, play like Spurs!. And come on you Spurs supporters, demand that we are Spurs when we are on the pitch. Sweep down the pitch with the ball like a Mongol horde. Don't creep down the pitch like you're pulling an oxen led wagon. Charge into battle like Harry "Hotspur" Percy, maintain the name and the fame to the game we play. Don't pretend we are glorious like some Falstaff. Be glorious.
If someone thinks I'm calling for ignoring defensive responsibilities, show me where I did so. I don't think I ever did. Words put in my mouth by others if such an accusation is made. But maintaining a good defense does not require wearing concrete boots and passing only backwards. Sweep down the flanks while someone else doubles back in coverage, lads. Think forward, and not like some Tory going backwards. Glory not Tory. Ha ha. Ho ho. Away we go.
Just run about a bit is not playing with style. It's chaos. Who other than Harry-not-Hotspur would advocate that? Not Harry Percy. A cavalry that just runs about a bit would be slaughtered. But having a plan to be organized is not the same as being boring, and AVB never got to the stylish part of being organized. Would his project has gotten there? We'll never know. Timmy boy needs to bring some organization as well as the idea of going forward. don't need to run into the breach. Even Disney's lemmings dashed forward, and went directly over a cliff. We need to have organized style, not organized boredom. Timmy boy's been manager for only a week. Too early to know what he has in mind, and too early for him to have imposed any organized plan to lead to glory yet. I don't know yet what he'll bring to the team. If it's "just run about a bit," they like the keystone kops he'll give us a laugh, but not much more than that. Style that takes time and discipline. It requires coordination, but it is focused on going forward, not in stumbling about in place. The Devils never had it, and they won in shame, from my perspective. (To peter: better to play like Bobby Orr than to use the offside trap as one's major tactic. Now there's a mixed metaphor no one could have foreseen.)

Having to play those 2 cbs together is never going to be a build from the back policy, I really have my worries if we are going to the Mancs and goons with that pairing.............The midfield we should really be thinking of of-loading either of Holtby or Siggi if we are going to keep Chadli those 3 are bringing nothing to the table in PL games. At the moment the team we put out is working at 60% max. The rest are just passengers, that some decent players are carrying week in week out.

Before we start passing judgement on Sherwood we need to be sensible. AVB had 18 months including a third of this season with the current squad. Things weren't progressing, if anything we were going backwards (backwards and sideways a lot during games and backwards down the table). Sherwood has had three games and all of those with a squad depleted by significant injuries. Yes he's played 4-4-2 in all 3 games but we need to see if he changes formation in the next few games and how he goes with some if not all of the senior players back so he can choose from them. Once that happens if he continues to play 4-4-2 and we continue to struggle then we can pass judgement (and it won't be pretty). Until then we have no choice but to sit tight and keep everything crossed. Being realistic it wouldn't have been any better under AVB. It would probably have been worse. AVB was an intelligent man but a naive footballing man. Sherwood may not be Einstein but his knowledge of the PL and the players at all levels of our club is a significant improvement on AVB. Let's see if he can put it to good use. If not he'll be looking for a new job in the summer.

Tottenham ''Disruptive'' Hotspur FC. What ever way you look at this, under AVB the football may have been boring, working with the players to buy into a system of play, heavy defeats, winning 1-0 (pen) trashing the europa conference teams in our group, all of this was under his way of working. So Levy out's him, pushed or walked makes no odds his gone. Now the players have to buy into a new way of playing under Tim Sherwood, mid-season all change, reminds me of mind the gap, a massive gap between manager A to Manager B as he mentioned games are coming thick and fast, little time to work on the training ground, one game ends and we are into the next, silly season of fixtures, playing Stoke Sunday, monday off, tuesday off, wednesday away to Man U, by the time the 5th of January arrives we will be out of the FA Cup, still sitting higher end of the prem and just the europa to play for, this is turning into another ''always next season'' the vultures will circle for our players in january and he summer another season of disruption's.

I was looking at the players we have and it came to me that if we are going to play 4 4 2 then I think we have some players that just do not fit that system. These being Siggy, Holtby and Eriksen. Non of these players imo are CM's, they are at the moment not strong enough. Will then become stronger, possibly, Modric did but how long will they hang around if they are not getting played. We have seen them play so far under Sherwood but in all honesty as any of them given us confidence that they will be ahead of Sandro, Paulinho, Dembele or Capoue in a CM pairing in a 4 4 2 formation?.

In a 4 4 2 we want wingers to have some pace and can cross a ball in. Well I would say Lennon and Townsend for that, so where does that leave Chadli, Lamela? Now of course Sherwood may not stick to a 4 4 2 but if he does then I cannot see all of these players fitting into that system, they are more suited to a 4 3 3 or a 4 2 3 1 so we will have to see.

My other concern is this 4 4 2 with our strikers, Soldado doesn't look like scoring and Ade will be trouble again, his contribution will not last and Defoe looks lost and shot, his heart has gone imo. I said it yesterday, Ade work rate yesterday was not like the previous two matches, he has imo massaged his ego by proving his point and now he looks as though he is going back to Ade, performance dipping already. So unless Sherwood can manage him and get him playing with a good work ethic then Ade is not our answer and as it looks neither is Soldado. There is something about him that I just cannot sit easy with, just a inner gut feeling that is uncomfortable.

On the other hand we cannot judge Sherwood yet as he has had awful injuries. Can we claw back the points, yes of course we can, we were 12 points ahead of Arsenal one season and they clawed themselves back into the top four, it's not over yet imo but unless we start winning asap then I doubt we will claw it back, we are not Arsenal.

Finally, we have huge defensive problems, Vlad is not good enough and Dawson needs a better player by his side. We need Vertonghen back asap and we need to sort Kaboul out asap. If he is not going to be fit then we need to find a replacement, a bloody good one.

The doom and gloom from me is that under AVB we had a plan and a winning team structure. Ok some didnt like the style of play. Fine. Ok it was taking a bit of time for the new signings to settle. Fine. But we always had a winning structure to fall back on. People talk about the bale factor but we STILL had a 50 per cent win record in the PL THIS season (still better than Redknapp) and we had a 100 per cent record in europe and the cups this season (miles better than Redknapp). We spent the Bale money on players to compliment this winning formula. But for a couple of freak results we had the best defence in the league. We were in it to win it in 4 competitions. We were rotating across 25 players and further were playing a style that wouldnt knacker the players by march. All gone because Levy kept interfering and the brand of football wasnt to people's liking. As gary neville said - the style can come later - you need to create a winning team FIRST. Still some fans got what they wanted. Back to no proper plan. Apart from run as far and as fast as you can. A manager who at best we hope and pray we have struck lucky with. He interviews like a moron completely out of his depth. All we can do is batten down the hatches til the summer and hope a proper manager will come available then. It wouldnt surprise me if we are already talking to candidates.

Who on here thinks we will get top four? We could put up a poll to vote, but it gets hit by the trolls, for me it's a NO. First objective enough points to make us safe, another 4 wins should do it, getting Verts back i.e all injured players, but then others get injured, TS needs a full fit squad to work with, find his best X1 and every win is a bonus. What plans does Levy hold, he wants Van Gaal but can't do that until after the world cup, if his going for him, that could mean Sherwood walks away from our club, Steffen, Les, Chris, what happens to them if it ends up with Van Gaal, complete change in staff, new way of playing again, you could not make this up or perhaps i just did?
spu 4 life
Of course we have to give Sherwood time, nobody knows much about him, apart from the fact he was a magazine editor with Jamie Redknapp before he took on the Saturday morning Spurs schoolboys. Has he still got that Arsenal tattoo on his arm. As for a depleted squad WBA left 5 first teamers on the bench, saving them for the next game presumably prepared to chuck the game. Also why is Baldini keeping quiet, is it for financial reasons, does he really think leaving the footballing decisions to Levy is such a good idea

WSE - I think part of the problem was a lack of trust in ENIC / Levy to make the funds available now if they weren't spent in the summer. Once the money was absorbed into the 'business' then it seems to disappear from the transfer budget (Modric sale etc.). I think that may have been the reason for the rush of signings (not all of whom have been convincing) last summer. I've got a horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach that one of the reasons that Sherwood got the job is because he has promised Levy that he doesn't need to bring any new players in during this January and, even worse, I think he may sell one or two so that ENIC can claw back some of the previously spent Bale fee. If that happens this site and many others will go into meltdown!

I have to agree with a few others on here. Top 4 is looking extremely unlikely. In fact. I would say impossible. Even IF we do improve - we then have to hope that one of Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea or City have a serious wobble. The first 2 being the only ones close to a possible wobble IF they experience a few injuries to key players. Then we have to hope that Man Utd do not improve as well. No - as much as i wish, hope and pray. This season at absolute best will see us finish in 5th place. But more likely we will be between 6th-(God forbid) 8th place. We are seriously not of a level we need to be at. Players such as Holtby and Chirches in all honesty need a loan spell somewhere for the rest of the season. Players like Dawson, Lennon and Defoe are just not good enough. And players like Siggurdson, Chadli, and Capoue do not suit a 442. Then players like Rose, Kaboul, Dembele and Sandro are bordering to injury prone. I must be honest. If we are not going to make top 4 then we should just stay the ***** away from EL places. Cursed cup. I really don't see to much hope. Nor can i say Spurs have had any positives this season. We've seen our supposed world class keeper lose form and become Gomes-ish. We've not seen a single player we've signed show any merit. Previously i had felt Chiriches to be the best along with Capoue. But both have been awful of late. Capoue not suiting our new system. Eriksen appears to be the only real hope - those who say he cant play CM - didnt they say that about a certain Croat. Soldado and Chadli seem way to slow. And Paulinho IMO is a marmite man. Defoe has lost it. Lennon had only ever feigned that he had it. Townsend needs another season at least before he's what we need. Rose is a Left-wing who couldnt cut it there. Adebayor has clearly worked off all his frustration and motivation against AVB in 150 minutes of football and it's as you were with his game. Call me negative. But - Walker, Sandro, Dembele, Vertonghen and Eriksen are the only players i care to keep as of this point. The rest can be on their merry way for all i care. But we'll see a few of the names i mentioned gone within 6 months if we do not finish 5th. Turgid Tottenham. Sad Spurs. But at least we have the English Pep Guardiola in Timmmah, right? Incredibly disillusioned. Watching Arsenal and Liverpool do what we should be doing. Incredibly disappointed and embarrassed. And the worst part is - it'll get worse. A whole lot worse before it gets better. We have to rebuild and start from scratch and hope that within 5 years we will be back challenging for CL spots.

WSE - I fear you may be right. As for a CB we may see one promoted from the youth team (with whom Sherwood is familiar) but I really don't think we'll be signing a single new player in January. Not a CB, not a LB and not a striker. Sherwood has already said as much. In fact he's said we have too many players. Music to Levy's ears! If we cash in on some players and don't invest in the critical areas that need it then we have no choice but to call for Levy's / ENIC heads on a platter. I fear that's where we're heading. Out of interest, did Levy ever make the requested statement to the Supporters Trust? Of course he didn't. The man views us fans with complete disdain.

Gofspurs , Unfortanately it is all too easy to predict what is going to happen to Spurs in the next two seasons. Our capacity to self- destruct knows no bounds. spurious .. Sherwood has already said that he did not think we need to bring any new players in ... which Levy must have liked to hear.

Why is there such a rush to get into the CL? We really would be a laughing stock if we got there and then got bundled out early. We need to be ready (competitive) for the CL before we get in the top four ... and we are not ready yet!

Geofspurs - Absolutely (re. Levy). I'm sure it's one of the main reasons Sherwood got the job. Notably he didn't say that we weren't going to sell any players in January though. Even more to the liking of Levy I'm sure. Let's not spend any money at all in January and maybe sell 2 or 3 players and claw back some of the Bale money! Levy must be doing somersaults of joy! I wouldn't be surprised if we finish this season with a net PROFIT on the 2 transfer windows of somewhere between £20m-£30m. Fecking ridiculous for a club with serious ambitions. Perhaps it's the fact that we thought we had serious ambitions that's fecking ridiculous.

ItalianYiddo it is hard to contradict what you are saying but that would make avb delusional too, because he accepted the top4 challenge for this season and thought he can deliver. Maybe he would have even pulled it through, who knows...
logos8
I find it worrying that neither avb nor baldini did not warn that breaking the spending record 3 times won't guarantee immediate success... wenger said it. others said it. newcastle proved it last season. but we were all still believing in "the project". so what was the plan?
logos8
weststand, I don't see the signings as crap regardless of who bought them in. IMO most of those players will come good if not with Spurs somewhere else. Our problem is selling our best players and bringing in young players with no PL experience and expecting quick results. Keep Modric, keep VDV, keep Bale bring in some young talent to ease in and we have a different scenario. Ok, our club isn't run in such a way to make this possible and I can understand it but don't keep selling your best players and expect success in the short term, it ain't gonna happen. COYS.
ItalianYiddo
ItalianYiddo so what you are saying is that 5th place this season would have been a good result from avb? I can agree with that. Hopefully tim doesn't finish worse than 6th. I honestly believe we would have won the game if dembele, townsend, and lennon would have played yesterday...
logos8
ItalianYiddo its my opinion they all look crap, Until all there performances improve 110% Im sticking to that line....
WestStandEnclosure
logos, AVB was never my first choice, I liked the work that Rodgers was doing at Swansea. When AVB was appointed I for one wasn't unhappy as I thought Levy was looking at the long term and thought AVB could deliver, we won't go over the same thing over and over again but to give him all those players and not the full season to me is madness. AVB may well have finished the season poorly and I would have been the first to call for his head, then again with players coming back from injury and players getting to know each other we may even had a top 4 surge and the following season we would have been a stronger unit, we will never know.
ItalianYiddo
Really tough time for your club. I think you can all accept that Wenger got it right when he said that you ad maybe signed too many players. And while AVB was unlikely to ever really live up to the expectations it really was a stupid decision to get rid of him without anyone lined up. If Sherwood is considered the answer then the Lord alone knows what the questions is!

You now have an inexperienced manager who will be dealing with a lot of unhappy players and who wont really know how to deal with them. Despite being rich financially these players and also humans and (money aside) have the same needs as the rest of us in order to perform at the top of our ability. Tim, despite his obvious strength (ie a lifelong Gooner) is hopelessly ill-equipped to deal with this situation and will unfortunately be a disaster.

Clark, of WBA would have been a much more practical appointment, even if only until the summer. I think top 4 is gone for you lot and now its all about securing some level of European football and convincing the bigger players that they should stick with the program. You need a big name manager to do this or there could be an exodus of talent from the club in the summer.

In other news, we are top of the league!

;-)

Galway Gooner
Italianyiddo, fair enough, I can agree with that too. :) see? I am not so delusional after all. Just a little bit from time to time.
logos8
Galway Gooner no exodus in the summer unless Levy aproves it, and I don't think he will.

Some insist we are only 5 points off 4th, so what, I was only 3 numbers off winning the Lotto last week, and there is a similarity between the two, in terms of the likelihood of success. Looking at the PL table, there are some alarming facts hidden in there. We have actually lost as many home games (3) as we have won, we have scored exactly the same number of goals (19) as Fulham who are in the bottom 3. I am not really interested in the banter regarding the comparative merits of Redknapp, and Villas Boaz, I consider, given the start points of their respective tenure, and where they ended up, and I think the comparatives are obvious. I am only interested in where this great club is heading, with a totally football ignorant chairman making totally irrational decisions, that can only result in this club regressing further and further. He sacked the two most successful coaches of his tenure, Jol, and Redknapp, at the first hint of crisis. He has also appointed disasters like Santini, Ramos, and to a lesser extent AVB, he has consistently sold our top players as soon as the profit margin is considered acceptable, and he now lumbers us with a back-room boy, installing him into the coaches post for 18 months, ample time to put us back where we were when Redknapp's rescue mission began. If, as now seems highly unlikely, Levy sees the error of his ways, and seeks out, and appoints a properly experienced, knowledgeable, and reasonably successful coach in the summer, then nothing will change, because the underlying problem is Mr. Levy. His presence, and interference behind the scenes, and his influence on the activities of THFC is cancerous, and will always effect the performance of the club. It is his decisions on player sales, and recruitment, and the frequency of his sacking of manager/coaches, and the quality of those he recruits, that will continue to have an adverse effect on results and the progress of the club. He has now surpassed even himself, by sacking a coach mid season, without previously securing a successor, as he had always done before, and in panic has now installed a totally inexperienced, untried at senior level, rookie on an 18 months contract. The moral of the story of course is that bean counters should stick to counting beans, and football matters should be left to football savvy people, never the twain should meet. Unfortunately I don't think Levy will ever realise and understand this, so nothing will change as long as ENIC and Joe Lewis own the organisation. The only thing that may persuade him, is, if the club continues to slide down the league, that fans protest vocally in numbers at home games, so that he may see from his box, that the natives are unhappy.
Frank
That's an optimistic view Logos. Player contracts only really work to help bring up the value of the player, its rare that players who really don't want to leave are forced to stay. You have some big name players who will be facing into yet another season of transition, they may look at the club (and their own age) and think "screw this, I'm not hanging around to see if things improve." We lost RVP for this reason and we were in a better position than you lot.

Take JanV as an example, 26-27 year old (I'm guessing his age), coming into his peak and knows that if he went on the market tomorrow he would pretty easily find a club that will pay him more, give him CL football and a chance to compete in the league. Spurs are at least 2 seasons away from CL football (assuming that this year is a write off). Is JanV likely to stay around over his love of Spurs? Remember he said he turned down Arsenal as they wouldn't give him a certain starting position in the CB position.

Sandro is another one even if he seems a bit more loyal.

Just look back at last summer and Bale, all leading up to it the club and manager were insisting he wasn't for sale and then Bale effectively goes on strike and is sold. It's not a nice part of the game but it's a business reality.

Galway Gooner
Good post Frank. Levy has also blatantly refused to make the statement very calmly and politely requested by the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Trust. He doesn't give two hoots for the fans of our club. The only thing that will make a difference is if he and his ENIC cronies get hit in the pocket. Perhaps some anti Levy protests should take place before the next couple of home games. Unfortunately I don't suppose it would make a great deal of difference to Levy or ENIC. The only thing that would work is if our season ticket waiting list significantly dropped for the current 40,000. If the size of the future cash-cow shrunk significantly I'm sure ENIC would suddenly take action. It's pathetic and sad. Of all the circus currently surrounding our club, Levy's point-blank refusal to speak to the Supporters Trust (the official body representing Spurs fans let's not forget) is the biggest slap in the face. It is disrespectful beyond words or understanding.
SpuriousLife
You sold it to me Frank

Galway keep counting those chickens, City and Chelsea first and second, third and fourth between Liverpool, Man U and you. I think you will will end up 5th if you do well in the CL as you don't have depth and pool no european football.
ItalianYiddo
Frank ... No matter who owns the club, the reality is that the football and business side of any club are equally important and will both conflict, in varying degrees. That's the way it is and it's not going to change. Progress?!!
Geofspurs
Frank - well said. Apart from the new training ground the club has not improved since 2010.
MrSpurs
Galway.....I didn,t need vinegar chops to tell me 7 new signings were going to be hard to integrate. As for Sherwoods strength.....you're right, it takes some guts to support that shower of sheit from Woolich. Exodus?....Nah!,,, they already play for the best club in the country. All this turmoil and we,re how far behind the steady ship gooner. Says it all really, all these problems and still within touching distance of le arse, now that to me points to a team that is struggling, ours is problematic, yours, well that's just dog rough. Smiley face WOOLICH BOY.
Cider spurs
Italian - I'm not counting any chickens. Currently we are top of the league (which means we are the top side as things currently stand. In 2013 calendar year we have amassed more points than any other side. Over the last 12 months we have amassed more points than any other side. So I'm not making this up or making predictions based on bias or hatred, just pure facts, form and trend.

Arsenal will not finish 5th and you just come across as bitter and a bit ignorant when you make such comments.

And as for squad dept - its far stronger than yours. We've been without or top and 2nd top scorer last season for the pas t 3 months and we have done pretty well haven't we? They are back now so it looks a little more positive.

Galway Gooner
Cider - you are not within touching distance of Arsenal, we are well ahead of you. 8 point is a huge gap for an out of form team to make up. How big does the gap have to be before it is no longer touching distance???

I could make some Mind The Gap comment here but that's usually comes from the White part of London ;-)

Galway Gooner
Galway, calm it matey, did I accidentily touch a raw nerve? I have been called a few things, bitter and ignorant I don't recall. My prediction is based on possibilities and I never said our squad is stronger than yours which in itself is irrelevant as we are out of this specific discussion. Are you saying Liverpool are out of the running for top four or Man U? Are you going to finish above Chelsea? Didn't look it the other night. Are you going to finish above City? As I said your best bet is getting knocked out of the CL. Back to the chickens....
ItalianYiddo
Come to think of it Everton played you off your own park the other week so I should bring them into the equation too. It could be you 6th and us 7th who knows?
ItalianYiddo
No one seems to be discussing yesterdays match on here. I'd be happy to see some opinions on it. Opinions on the rest of the season, after all, are pure speculation.
MAN ON!
Italian - my first was about Spurs and the current position of your club, I don't think I mentioned Arsenal so when you brought it up I figured it was open discussion on anything mentioned or otherwise??

To answer your questions: above Liverpool - yes, above Chelsea - possibly yes. Above City - alas no. But I do think we will run them close.

And I'd be careful using a single game as a basis to predict where a team will finish, you think we wont finish above Chelsea based on the 0-0 draw the other night. Fine, but by that logic is it safe to assume that you will finish below West Ham?? Or does it not apply in Spurs case?

Galway Gooner
Not basing it on one game Galway, I am basing it on the fact that if you want to finish above Chelsea you have to be looking to beating them at home and as it happened the bar got in the way of you losing. No bias on this if I was a betting man I would bet on Chelsky finishing above you and as for Liverpool, unlucky to lose against City, you were as unlucky against them as we were.
ItalianYiddo
Italian -

"Are you going to finish above Chelsea? Didn't look it the other night." - these are your words and when you said it didn't look like it the other night I though you meant that it didn't look like it based on the performance the other night. Again I may have totally misunderstood your comment but I don't believe I have. Maybe you just got it wrong and are looking for a way out of a silly comment by using the good old "taken out of context" argument???

You don't need to beat Chelsea to finish above them, they beat City but City are above them so there goes that logic. It of course helps if you beat your rivals but it is not a necessity. Where Arsenal have been excellent this season is that they are very stable - they win the games that they are expected to win and lose the games that they are expected to lose. Its called consistency. We will beat or maybe draw against Newcastle at the weekend because that, based on form and ability is pretty much what is expected of us. Will it be enough to win the league? Not if City can bring some consistency to their game which it looks like that they may have.

Against City as dreadful as we were we still scored 3 goals, had a further 2 ruled out wrongly for offside and had a pretty clear penalty denied. I would say, while poor, we were unlucky against City.

Is the Arsenal site closed for the Xmas holidays.

Sure everyone knows by now but < P > starts a new paragraph, with < BR > putting in a blank line.

Without the spaces either side of the letters. COYS
